Abstract Turbidity current hydrodynamic properties are evaluated experimentally to understand the formation of turbidity current depositional lobes and the relationship with flow properties, in particular, flow rates. This study focused on the depositional behavior of unconfined turbidity currents through the analysis of three-dimensional experiments performed in a large-scale channel-basin tank without slope break. Three flow rates were simulated when flow velocities, both in longitudinal and transversal directions, were measured and resulting depositional features were evaluated. The three-dimensional physical experiments carried out in this work allowed the identification of two flow rate models with different hydrodynamic characteristics and two distinct lobes. Lower flow rates produced elongated lobate deposits, with characteristic lower flow regime plane bed on the surfaces, characteristic downstream sediment fining that resulted from lower flow velocities, and visibly less turbulent flows from less competent and waning turbidity currents. Higher flow rates showed a more characteristic radial and downstream fining sediment with lobe surfaces displaying ripples and dunes, generated by the higher flow velocities, presumably more turbulent, and more competent turbidity currents.

Abstract Bedforms are sedimentary features that can be generated on the seafloor by the interaction between density currents and mobile beds. Developing knowledge about the hydraulic and sedimentary processes involved during these events is in the interest of research groups and oil companies. Because of the magnitude of the density currents in its natural environment and the challenge in collecting data, studies in laboratory are of great value. We present results of 29 experiments focusing in the bedform development generated by saline currents, testing two different sediment types and three grain sizes: melamine (245 µm-plastic) and sands (206 and 485 µm). We analyzed the current velocity and fractional density profiles as well as pictures taken during and after each run. Results have showed classical velocity and concentration profiles, for 8 subcritical and 21 supercritical currents, with densimetric Froude numbers (Frd) between 0.5 and 2.2. Some correlations were identified, such as the decrease of the velocity peak height and increase in the mean velocity (with consequent reduction of the current thickness), due to an increase of the concentration and/or flume slope. The occurrence of bedforms was more likely for high discharge and concentration rates of current density, which directly influence the Frd. Bedforms were classified according to the shear stresses values applied by the current to the bed, resulting in the generation of lower plane bed, ripples and dunes. Dunes and ripples were observed in supercritical flow conditions, which is a hydraulic scenario of bedforms generation not predicted by fluvial models. Thus, this study demonstrated the existence of differences in generation and, consequently, the classification approach for density current bedforms, compared to those generated by river flows. To this fact is attributed the hydrodynamic (velocity and concentration profiles) and sediment transport differences between fluvial flows and density currents. Further studies may be carried out in order to constructing new concepts of bedforms generation by density currents.

RESUMO As correntes de densidade, cujo movimento ocorre pela diferença de massa específica entre o escoamento e o fluido ambiente ao seu redor, podem interagir com o substrato gerando formas de fundo, similares às encontradas em ambientes fluviais. Entretanto não existem diagramas de previsão específicos correspondentes para esse tipo de fenômeno. Assim, este trabalho visa comparar a ocorrência das formas de fundo fluviais previstas nos diagramas de previsão com aquelas geradas por correntes de densidade salinas obtidas experimentalmente. As formas de fundo foram geradas em um canal bidimensional de declividade variável, preenchido por água, com três composições de leito móvel e diferentes valores de vazão, massa especifica e inclinação. Três formas de fundo foram identificadas (leito plano inferior, ondulações e dunas), as quais, juntamente com o cálculo de parâmetros hidrodinâmicos permitiram a utilização dos diagramas fluviais. Verificou-se que os diagramas fluviais não apresentaram boas previsões das formas de fundo geradas por correntes de densidade. A esse fato são atribuídas as diferenças hidrodinâmicas dos escoamentos (perfis de velocidade e concentração) e, também, à limitação dos parâmetros dimensionais na extrapolação dos resultados. Dessa forma, indica-se a necessidade de se elaborar um diagrama de previsão próprio adaptado a estas correntes.

ABSTRACT Density currents, whose movement takes place by the density difference between the flow and the ambient fluid around it, can interact with the substract generating bedforms similar to the fluvial environments. However, there are no specific bedform phase diagrams capable to predict this type of phenomenon. This study aims to compare the prediction of fluvial bedforms phase diagram with those generated by experimental saline currents. Bedforms were generated in two-dimensional tilting plexiglass flume submerged in a larger tank filled with water with three different mobile beds and varied values of discharge and salt concentration. It was observed three types of bedform (lower plane bed, ripples and dunes), which, with the concomitant calculation of hydrodynamic parameters (mean velocity, energy and mobility) allowed the use of the phase diagram. It was observed that the fluvial phase diagrams did not present good predictions for bedforms generated by density currents. This fact is associated to the hydrodynamics differences (velocity and concentration profiles) and the limitation of the dimensional parameters in the extrapolation of results. Therefore, it is indicated the need to draw up a proper phase diagram to density currents.

Este artículo examina los derechos de participación y protagonismo de los niños, las niñas y los adolescentes, con base en la experiencia de la Conferencia sobre Derechos de los Niños y los Adolescentes en Brasil, a la luz de la sociología de la infancia. Los documentos de la conferencias fueron consultados en los sitios de Internet del gobierno brasileño. Los hallazgos de este estudio revelan que la participación de los jóvenes se ha incrementado en las últimas conferencias. Sin embargo, es necesario promover una participación sistemática y genuina a través de la construcción de relaciones democráticas en todos los contextos del desarrollo donde los niños, las niñas y los adolescentes viven, con el fin de modificar su vida y sus prácticas participativas en la sociedad.

This paper examines the children and young people’s participation and protagonism rights based on the Conferences on Children and Adolescents Rights’ experience in Brazil, based on childhood sociology. Conferences’ documents were consulted on the Brazilian government websites. These study findings revealed that young people’s participation has increased in the last conferences. However, it is necessary to promote a systematic and genuine participation through democratic relations construction in all development contexts where children and adolescent live in order to modify their life and society participative practices.

Este artigo analisa os direitos de participação e protagonismo infanto-juvenis a partir das Conferências dos Direitos da Criança e do Adolescente no Brasil, amparando-se em elementos da Sociologia da Infância. Foram consultados e analisados documentos das conferências nos sites do governo brasileiro. Constatou-se que a participação de adolescentes ampliou-se significativamente nas últimas conferências. Entretanto, é necessário promover uma participação legítima e sistemática a partir da construção de relações democráticas em todos os contextos em que crianças e adolescentes se desenvolvem, de modo a transformar suas vidas e as práticas democráticas na sociedade.

This study investigated the stressful life events, psychosocial variables and the predictors of depressive symptoms in 127 participants who were living in shelters. The age range varied from 7 to 16 years old. The CDI and IEEIA were twice administrated. Taking into account the CDI score, the frequency of stressful life events, longitudinal differences were not observed. The multiple linear regression allowed to consider a model of predictors that explain together 56.7% of the differences on the CDI scores. The prevention of events related mainly to conflicts in the school and within families should be emphasized, as well as the promotion of interventions directed to families in situation of biggest vulnerability.

Este estudo investigou eventos de vida estressantes, variáveis psicossociais e preditores de sintomas depressivos em crianças e adolescentes institucionalizados. Participaram 127 crianças e adolescentes de 7 a 16 anos que viviam em abrigos de proteção. Foram realizadas duas aplicações longitudinais do IEEIA e do CDI. Não houve diferença significativa no escore do CDI, e na frequência de eventos estressores, ao longo do tempo. A análise de regressão linear múltipla permitiu propor um modelo de variáveis preditoras, que, juntas, explicaram 56.7% da variação nos escores do CDI. A prevenção da ocorrência de eventos relacionados principalmente a conflitos na escola e familiares deve ser enfatizada, bem como a promoção de intervenções junto às familias em situação de maior vulnerabilidade

O presente artigo descreve a presença de sintomas ou do diagnóstico do Transtorno do Estresse Pós-Traumático (TEPT) em meninas vítimas de abuso sexual. Além disso, buscou-se comparar o uso de dois instrumentos de avaliação diagnóstica do TEPT infantil em duas amostras clínicas. No Estudo I (n=40 meninas), os sintomas foram avaliados através de uma entrevista clínica, baseada no DSM-IV/SCID/TEPT. E no Estudo II (n=15 meninas), através da versão brasileira da K-SADS-PL/TEPT. Os resultados apontaram semelhanças na presença do diagnóstico de TEPT nas duas amostras, próxima a 70%, apesar de os instrumentos indicarem diferenças específicas quanto à manifestação dos critérios C (evitação e entorpecimento) e critério D (excitabilidade aumentada). Pequenas diferenças na estrutura e na forma de aplicação dos instrumentos foram observadas. Conclui-se que ambos se aplicam à pesquisa e à avaliação clínica do TEPT infantil.

The present paper describes the presence of symptoms or diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in girls victims of sexual abuse, through two clinical interviews. Moreover, the use of two instruments of assessment of child PTSD diagnosis in two clinical samples has been compared. In Study I (n=40 girls) symptoms were assessed through clinical interview, based on DSM-IV/SCID/TEPT, and in Study II (n=15 girls) through the Brazilian version of K-SADS-PL/TEPT. The results pointed out similarities concerning the presence of PTSD diagnosis in both samples, around 70%, although instruments showed specific differences concerning the manifestation of criteria C (avoidance and numbing) and criteria D (excessive arousal). Small differences in the instruments' structure and application were observed. It has been concluded that both instruments can be applicable to research and to clinical assessment of child PTSD.

O presente artigo investigou a ocorrência e o impacto de eventos estressores para 297 crianças/adolescentes em situação de vulnerabilidade social de Porto Alegre (ambos os sexos; 7-16 anos, M = 11,22; SD = 2,13). O grupo 1 (G1) consistiu em 142 participantes, que viviam com suas famílias e o grupo 2 (G2), em 155 institucionalizados. Todos foram entrevistados e responderam individualmente ao Inventário de Eventos Estressores na Infância/Adolescência. Os eventos estressores mais freqüentes para amostra total foram: cumprir ordens dos pais (85,2%); discussão com amigos (72,9%); morte de familiares (71,8%); reprovação escolar (69,2%); e brigas com irmãos (68%). Um teste t de Student revelou diferença significativa entre G1 e G2 (p< 0,001) na variável ocorrência de eventos estressores, sendo que G2 apresentou médias mais altas (M = 26,79; SD = 8,67) que G1 (M = 19,16; SD = 9,37). Os eventos que tiveram maior impacto na amostra estudada foram: morte dos pais e amigos, estupro, rejeição de familiares e sofrer violência. Não houve diferença significativa entre meninos e meninas (p>0,05). A alta ocorrência e impacto de eventos estressores expõem a situação de vulnerabilidade social e familiar, presença de violência e privação de recursos em ambos os grupos.

The most frequent stressing events for the sample were: follow orders given by the parents (85.2%); quarrels with friends (72.9%); death of relatives (71.8%); failure at school (69.2%); and rivalry of siblings (68%). Student's t-test revealed significant difference between groups (p <0,001) regarding the occurrence of stressing events, G2 presented higher scores (M = 26.79; SD = 8.67) than G1 (M = 19.16; SD = 9.37). The events that caused the greatest impact upon the studied group were: death of parents and friends, rape, rejection by relatives and violence. There was no significant difference between sexes (p>0.05). The high frequency and strong impact of stressing events reveal the situation of social and familiar vulnerability, presence of violence and lack of resources in the whole group.

Este artigo trata de um estudo com pré-teste (T1) e pós-teste (T2) que avaliou o impacto de um projeto esportivo no desenvolvimento infantil. Participaram 39 estudantes de 6 a 11 anos, matriculados da 1a a 4a séries do Ensino Fundamental de escola pública. Eles foram distribuídos em dois grupos: G1 (24 integrantes do projeto esportivo) e G2 (15 crianças do grupo comparativo) e os professores dos estudantes também participaram. O impacto foi avaliado pelas diferenças em desempenho escolar, stress, qualidade de vida e avaliação de atitudes acadêmicas e sociais do aluno pelo professor. De T1 para T2, houve aumento significativo no desempenho escolar em G1 e G2. O stress diminuiu para todas as crianças, de T1 para T2, embora seja significativo apenas para G1. A percepção da qualidade de vida diminuiu, entre T1 e T2, para G1 e G2, sendo significativo apenas para G2. Não houve diferença significativa na avaliação dos alunos de G1 e G2, em T1 e T2, pelos professores.

This article presents a study based on a pretest (T1) and post test (T2) that aims to evaluate the impact of an educational/sporting project in children's psychological development. Thirty nine pupils with 6 to 11 years old, from first to fourth grades of a public school have participated in the study. They were separated in 2 groups: G1 (24 project participants); and G2 (n=15, comparison group). The teachers have also participated. The impact was evaluated considering the differences in school performance, stress, and life style scores. The teachers graded academic and social attitudes. G1 and G2 had a statistically significant increase in school performance from T1 to T2. The average stress was lower in T2 compared to T1 for all groups, although this decrease was only statistically significant for G1. Life style perception decreased between T1 and T2 for G1 and G2, but only significantly for G2. There was no difference in the way teachers evaluated either G1 and G2 or T1 or T2.

Este artículo trata de un estudio con pré-test (T1) y pós-test (T2) y evaluó el impacto de un proyecto deportivo en el desarrollo infantil. Participaron 39 estudiantes de 6 a 11 años, inscriptos del 1º al 4º grado de la enseñanza primaria de escuela pública. Ellos fueron distribuidos en dos grupos: G1 (24 integrantes del proyecto deportivo) y G2 (15 niños del grupo comparativo) y los profesores de los estudiantes también participaron. El impacto fue evaluado por las diferencias en el desempeño escolar, stress, calidad de vida y evaluación de actitudes académicas y sociales del alumno por el profesor. Del T1 para el T2 hubo un aumento significativo en el desempeño escolar en el G1 y el G2. el stress disminuyó para todos los niños de T1 para T2, pese a ser significativo apenas para el G1. La percepción de la calidad de vida disminuyó entre T1 e T2 para el G1 y el G2, siendo significativo apenas para el G2. No hubo diferencia significativa en la evaluación de los alumnos del G1 y del G2 en el T1 y el T2 por los profesores.
