ABSTRACT Purposes: to characterize the family and school contexts of children enrolled in nursery schools, preschools, or kindergartens in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and verify the effects of deprivation of school physical space on their development, in the perception of families regarding cognitive-linguistic, socioemotional, and motor aspects. Methods: the sample comprised 139 families of children aged 1 year to 5 years and 11 months, living in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, who answered an online questionnaire on the characterization of the family and school contexts and the impacts on cognitive-linguistic, socioemotional, and motor aspects. The study used the chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney statistical tests, with the significance set at p-values ≤ 5%. Results: older children were associated with being transferred to other schools (p = 0.0192) and greater socioemotional impairment (p = 0.0011). Smaller children felt fewer positive effects on the cognitive-linguistic aspect (p = 0.0137). The absence from the school environment and the overall effects of the pandemic negatively influenced them (p = 0.0404; p = 0.0134). Conclusion: the mean age of the parents/guardians was 36 years, with a Bachelor’s degree, and working from home. The children enrolled in public or private schools had online activities. All children were exposed to screens, most of them for 4 or more hours per day. The socioemotional aspect was the most impaired one, followed by the cognitive-linguistic aspect. The negative effects outweighed the positive ones.

RESUMO Objetivos: caracterizar o contexto familiar e escolar de crianças matriculadas em pré-escolas durante a pandemia de COVID-19 em 2020 e verificar os efeitos da privação do ambiente físico escolar no desenvolvimento infantil, na percepção dos familiares, em relação aos aspectos cognitivo-linguísticos, socioemocionais e motores. Métodos: participaram 139 familiares de crianças com idade entre um e cinco anos e 11 meses, residentes no estado de São Paulo, que responderam um questionário online sobre a caracterização do contexto familiar e escolar e impacto nos aspectos cognitivo-linguístico, socioemocional e motor. Utilizaram-se os testes estatísticos Qui-quadrado, Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney, com valores significantes para p≤5%. Resultados: para as crianças maiores, houve associação entre aumento de mudança de escola (p=0,0192) e maior prejuízo no aspecto socioemocional (p=0,0011). No aspecto cognitivo-linguístico, as crianças menores sentiram menos efeitos positivos (p=0,0137). A ausência do ambiente escolar e os efeitos gerais da pandemia influenciaram negativamente (p=0,0404; p=0,0134). Conclusão: os familiares apresentavam em média 36 anos, nível superior de instrução e atividades laborais remotas. As crianças, matriculadas em escolas públicas ou privadas, recebiam atividades online. Todas as crianças foram expostas a telas e a maioria por quatro horas ou mais. O aspecto socioemocional foi mais prejudicado, seguido do cognitivo-linguístico. Os efeitos negativos superaram os positivos.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to develop and validate an informative handbook on the role of speech-language-hearing therapy in primary health care. Methods: handbook development was preceded by a bibliographical survey for the theoretical framework. Validation consisted of two stages, with respectively 10 and eight speech-language-hearing judges in the first and second ones. An online questionnaire with 14 statements on content, language, illustrations, layout, and motivation assessed the material, scoring it with a 5-point Likert scale of agreement. It also had room for suggestions. The quantitative analysis was performed with two measures: Content Validity Index and Content Validity Coefficient. Values below 80% indicated the need for revision. The qualitative analysis was based on the judges' comments. Results: in the first stage, despite obtaining satisfactory indices, the qualitative analysis revealed aspects to be improved. The handbook’s “Content” and “Language” were adjusted, and it was resent to the judges for further review. In the second stage, the quantitative analysis revealed increased agreement rates for most of the investigated items. Conclusion: the validation stages had high approval rates, indicating that the handbook may be used as a guide for speech-language-hearing practice in primary health care.

RESUMO Objetivo: elaborar e validar um manual informativo sobre o papel da Fonoaudiologia na Atenção Primária à Saúde. Métodos: a elaboração do manual foi precedida de um levantamento bibliográfico para embasamento teórico. A validação foi constituída por duas etapas, tendo 10 juízes fonoaudiólogos na primeira e oito na segunda. Utilizou-se um questionário online com 14 afirmativas sobre conteúdo, linguagem, ilustrações, layout e motivação, para serem avaliadas por uma escala Likert de concordância de 5 pontos. Foi oferecido um espaço para sugestões. A análise quantitativa ocorreu a partir de duas medidas: Índice de Validade de Conteúdo e Coeficiente de Validade de Conteúdo. Valores inferiores a 80% indicaram necessidade de revisão. A análise qualitativa foi feita a partir dos comentários dos juízes. Resultados: na primeira etapa, apesar da obtenção de índices satisfatórios, a análise qualitativa revelou aspectos a serem melhorados. O manual foi modificado quanto às categorias ‘conteúdo’ e ‘linguagem’ e encaminhado para nova apreciação dos juízes. Na segunda etapa, a análise quantitativa revelou aumento dos índices de concordância para a maioria dos itens investigados. Conclusão: foram alcançados altos índices de aprovação nas etapas de validação, o que indica que o manual pode ser utilizado como norteador para a prática fonoaudiológica na Atenção Primária à Saúde.

RESUMO Objetivo Desenvolver e validar histórias infantis voltadas para a educação em saúde na Fonoaudiologia. Método Estudo transversal, descritivo, quali-quantitativo de duas etapas. 1ª) elaboração de 10 histórias infantis, questões norteadoras, notas explicativas e ilustrações. 2ª) validação por juízes (fonoaudiólogos, educadores e familiares) em duas fases. Na primeira, a amostra foi composta por 42 juízes e na segunda por 28. Para acessar os materiais e o questionário de validação, foi disponibilizado um website. O questionário investigava os dados pessoais dos juízes e a percepção dos juízes em relação ao conteúdo, ao vocabulário, às ilustrações, à estrutura e à motivação dos materiais. Utilizou-se escala Likert de concordância de cinco pontos, com espaços para sugestões em cada questão. A análise quantitativa ocorreu por meio do Índice de Validade do Conteúdo e do Coeficiente de Validade de Conteúdo. A análise qualitativa ocorreu a partir dos comentários feitos pelos juízes. O índice mínimo de concordância entre os juízes sobre a decisão de alterar ou não os materiais foi de 80%. Resultados A primeira fase apontou necessidade de modificar três títulos e dois vocabulários (bullying e dique), e de aumentar a idade mínima sugerida para acesso aos materiais para cinco anos de idade. A segunda fase revelou boa aceitabilidade em todas as mudanças realizadas. Conclusão Os materiais elaborados foram validados e podem ser usados como ferramentas de educação em saúde por fonoaudiólogos e educadores, e também pelos familiares.

ABSTRACT Purpose Developing and validating children’s stories focused on health education in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. Methods Cross-sectional, descriptive, quali-quantitative two-step study. 1st) elaboration of 10 children’s stories, guiding questions, explanatory notes, and illustrations. 2nd) validation by judges (speech therapists, educators, and familiar) in two phases. In the first, the sample consisted of 42 judges and in the second, 28. To access the materials and the validation questionnaire, a website was made available. The questionnaire investigated the judges’ personal data and the judges’ perceptions regarding the contents, vocabulary, illustrations, structure, and motivation of the materials. A five-point Likert scale of the agreement was used, with spaces for suggestions in each question. The quantitative analysis was done using the Content Validity Index and the Content Validity Coefficient. The qualitative analysis was based on the comments of the judges. The minimum rate of agreement among the judges on the decision to change or not change the materials was 80%. Results The first phase pointed out the need for modifications in three titles and two vocabularies (bullying and dyke), and the need for increasing to five years of age the minimum age for access to the materials. The second phase revealed good acceptability in all changes made. Conclusion The materials developed were validated and can be used as health education tools by speech therapists and educators, as well as parents.

Resumo: Introdução: O período de isolamento social imposto no Brasil em resposta à pandemia tem alterado o modo de aprender de muitos estudantes universitários do Brasil, em especial o dos que tiveram suas atividades acadêmicas, que antes eram presenciais, transferidas para o modo remoto. Tais mudanças podem ser benéficas se considerarmos que este pode ser um momento favorável para o aprimoramento de habilidades não cognitivas, como autoconhecimento, resiliência, coletividade, versatilidade, adaptabilidade e liderança. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar como os universitários da área da saúde, das regiões Sudeste e Sul do país, têm percebido o aprimoramento de competências não cognitivas durante as rápidas mudanças impostas pela pandemia. Método: O estudo contou com a participação de 954 estudantes da área da saúde matriculados em instituições de ensino superior brasileiras. Um questionário on-line composto por 25 questões foi utilizado para coletar dados demográficos e acadêmicos, sentimentos e habilidades não cognitivas percebidas durante a continuidade “a distância” do curso de graduação. A percepção dos universitários foi aferida a partir de escalas Likert de intensidade, de 10 pontos (de 1 a 10), variando de “muito pouco” a “muito”. Previamente à aplicação desse questionário, foi feita sua validação por um grupo de juízes, composto por 20 estudantes de graduação de uma instituição de ensino superior do interior do estado de São Paulo, de diferentes cursos da saúde. Resultado: A análise de correspondências demonstrou que as habilidades não cognitivas, bem como as sensações investigadas, foram percebidas em variadas intensidades pelos estudantes universitários, sendo possível notar impactos positivos e negativos decorrentes das mudanças vivenciadas. Os alunos do primeiro e segundo semestres da graduação tenderam a ser menos colaborativos do que os discentes do terceiro e quarto semestres; em contrapartida, os alunos ingressantes tenderam a ser mais abertos ao novo quando comparados àqueles dos demais semestres. Conclusão: Vencer a procrastinação, assumir o protagonismo nos estudos, colaborar com os colegas e estar aberto ao novo foram habilidades não cognitivas fortemente percebidas durante a pandemia. Além disso, frustração, falta de motivação e desestabilidade emocional foram fortemente sentidas pelos estudantes, que consideraram que a pandemia afetou negativamente os estudos.

Abstract: Introduction: The social isolation in Brazil imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way in which many undergraduate students have been learning, especially those involved in academic activities, as they now have remote rather than in-person classes. These changes may be beneficial if one considers this time favorable for improving non-cognitive skills, such as self-knowledge, resilience, collectivity, versatility, adaptability and leadership. Objective: This study was aimed at investigating how undergraduate health students in Southeastern and Southern Brazil perceived improvement in non-cognitive competencies during the rapid changes imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: This study evaluated 954 undergraduate health students at Brazilian higher education institutions. An online questionnaire consisting of 25 items was used to collect demographic and academic data as well as the subjects’ perception of non-cognitive feelings and skills during the remote continuation of the undergraduate course. The undergraduate health students’ perceptions were measured using a 10-point Likert intensity scale ranging from “very little” to “very much”. This questionnaire was previously validated in a group of 20 undergraduate students attending different health courses at a higher education institution in the State of São Paulo. Result: Correspondence analysis demonstrated that non-cognitive skills, including feelings, were perceived with varying intensities by the undergraduate students, thus making it possible to observe positive and negative impacts resulting from the changes they experienced. Students in the first and second semesters of their first year of studies tended to show lower collaboration scores than students in the third and fourth semesters; on the other hand, students in the first semester tended to show higher scores of openness to new experiences than students in the subsequent semesters. Conclusion: Overcoming procrastination, taking the lead in their studies, collaborating with peers, and being open to the new were the non-cognitive skills that were strongly perceived during the pandemic. In addition, frustration, lack of motivation, and emotional instability were strongly felt by the students, who considered that the COVID-19 pandemic had negatively affected their performance.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar os pacientes com gagueira persistente em idade escolar, quanto às experiências de violência no contexto escolar, autorrelatadas pelos mesmos. Métodos: a amostra foi constituída por 10 pacientes com gagueira persistente em atendimento em um ambulatório de fluência do município de Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brasil, entre 10 e 17 anos, independentemente do sexo e das características da gagueira. O instrumento de coleta foi um questionário autoaplicável contendo 11 questões de múltipla escolha. Os dados foram analisados descritivamente, por apresentação da frequência de respostas. Resultados: quase metade dos pacientes com gagueira afirmaram sofrer bullying, por meio do recebimento de apelidos, culpabilização por tudo o que acontece, difamações, ataques físicos e zombarias. A sala de aula foi o local mais mencionado para a ocorrência do bullying. Como reações à violência sofrida, foram mencionados: ‘falar com os amigos, professores/diretores e familiares’, além de ‘tristeza’ e ‘vontade de mudar de escola’. Conclusão: apesar do reduzido número amostral, foi possível notar dados alarmantes e a importância de ações educativo-preventivas no ambiente escolar, tanto para a temática do “bullying”, como da “gagueira”.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize school-aged patients with persistent stuttering regarding their self-reported experiences of violence at school. Methods: the sample comprised 10 patients with persistent stuttering, 10 to 17 years old, regardless of their sex and stuttering characteristics, who received care at a fluency outpatient center in the heart of São Paulo State, Brazil. The collection instrument was an 11-question, multiple-choice, self-administered questionnaire. The data were descriptively analyzed based on the frequency of the answers. Results: almost half of the stuttering patients reported suffering bullying, in which they were given nicknames, defamed, blamed for everything that happened, physically attacked, and mocked. The classroom was the most mentioned environment where bullying took place. The following reactions to violence were mentioned: “talking to friends, teachers/principals, and relatives”, “sadness”, and “desire to change schools”. Conclusion: despite the small sample size, it was possible to note alarming data and the importance of educative/preventive actions in the school environment, approaching both bullying and stuttering.

RESUMO Objetivos: levantar a prevalência de fatores de risco para alteração na comunicação e de queixas comunicativas em pré-escolares que participaram do Programa Saúde na Escola (PSE) e comparar tais achados com idade e sexo. Métodos: a amostra foi composta por 190 pré-escolares que haviam sido alvo de uma ação do PSE. O procedimento de coleta envolveu a exploração dos dados dos questionários preenchidos previamente pelos familiares. Os fatores de risco e as queixas de comunicação foram apresentados por frequência de ocorrência. A verificação da evidência de associação entre variáveis ocorreu pelos testes Mann-Whitney e Qui Quadrado. Para todas as comparações adotou-se nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: o uso de mamadeira foi o fator de risco mais prevalente e associou-se com a idade, sendo mais frequente em crianças menores. As meninas apresentaram mais complicações durante gravidez ou parto e maior presença de hábitos de sucção não nutritiva, enquanto os meninos apresentaram mais internações. Conclusão: em relação aos fatores de risco investigados, o uso de mamadeira foi o mais citado, seguido das infecções de ouvido ou outros problemas no ouvido. Queixas relacionadas ao falar e ao ouvir foram pouco citadas, sendo que as de fala ocorreram em maior frequência.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to survey the prevalence of risk factors for communication disorders and complaints in preschoolers that participated in the School Health Program (SHP) and compare the findings with age and sex. Methods: the sample comprised 190 preschoolers reached by the SHP. The collection procedure involved the exploration of data in questionnaires previously filled out by their relatives. The risk factors and communication complaints were presented in the occurrence frequency. The evidence of associations between variables was verified with the Mann-Whitney and chi-square tests, and the 5% significance level was used for all comparisons. Results: baby bottle use was the most prevalent risk factor associated with age, being more frequent in younger children. The girls underwent more complications during pregnancy or birth and showed more nonnutritive sucking habits, whereas the boys had more hospital stays. Conclusion: regarding the investigated risk factors, the baby bottle use was the most reported one, followed by ear infections or other ear problems. Complaints related to speaking and hearing were seldom mentioned, although those related to speaking occurred more frequently.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar a percepção e a conduta autodeclarada de fonoaudiólogos sobre aspectos éticos e legais relacionados ao uso de imagens de pacientes em redes sociais, comparando tais achados com dados sociodemográficos. Método Para a coleta de dados, utilizou-se um questionário online disponibilizado na plataforma do GoogleDrive, que continha 13 questões abrangendo dados sociodemográficos e questões voltadas para a percepção de fonoaudiólogos quanto ao assunto estudado. A amostra da pesquisa foi composta por 765 participantes. Resultados A maior parte dos respondentes concordou, em algum grau, que o Código de Ética da Fonoaudiologia esclarece sobre o uso de imagens em redes, assim como a publicação de fotos e/ou vídeos de pacientes em redes sociais sem autorização por escrito, constitui infração ética e o direito de imagem está garantido pela Constituição Brasileira. Apenas 18,6% dos fonoaudiólogos afirmaram nunca terem recorrido ao Código de Ética em Fonoaudiologia. Quanto à exibição de fotografias ou vídeos em redes sociais, 5,1% afirmaram ter publicado, em alguma frequência, sem autorização e 21,18% o fizeram apenas com autorização verbal. Praticamente todos os participantes mencionaram já ter visto fotografias ou vídeos de pacientes em redes sociais virtuais postados por fonoaudiólogos. Conclusão Foi possível notar a relevância do estudo para impulsionar debates sobre o assunto e a essencialidade de novos estudos no tema abordado.

ABSTRACT Purpose Investigating the perception and self-reported behavior of speech-language therapist about ethical and legal aspects related to the use of images of patients in social networks, comparing such findings with sociodemographic data. Methods An online questionnaire with 13 questions was the instrument used to collect data related to the demographic data of the participants and to the perception of speech-language therapists. The questionnaire was available on the Google Forms platform e was answered by 765 participants. Results Most participants agreed that the Code of Ethics of Speech-Language Pathology gives information about the use of images in social networks (67.98%), that the publication of photos and / or videos of patients in social networks without authorization by written is an ethical infraction (93.33%) and that the image´s rights is guaranteed by the Brazilian Constitution (89.94%). 18.56% of speech-language pathologists stated that they had never used the Code of Ethics in Speech-Language Pathology. Concerning the exhibition of images in social networks, 5.1% stated that they had shown on their social networks photographs and / or videos without authorization, and 21.18% did so with only verbal authorization. Almost all participants (95.16%) mentioned having seen photographs or videos of patients on virtual social networks posted by speech-language therapist. Conclusion It was possible to verify the relevance of the results obtained and the impact of the research to encourage reflection on the subject.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the knowledge of users of primary healthcare services living in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, about dengue and its vector. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 605 people was conducted following a major dengue outbreak in 2013. RESULTS: Participants with higher levels of education were more likely to identify correctly the vector of the disease. CONCLUSIONS: The results emphasize the relevance of health education programs, the continuous promotion of educational campaigns in the media, the role of the television as a source of information, and the importance of motivating the population to control the vector.

A religiosidade é uma variável importante para a pesquisa em saúde, considerando suas conhecidas associações com o processo saúde-doença e questões importantes sobre o bem-estar, atitudes, práticas e satisfação em relação a cuidados e serviços. No entanto, na pesquisa em Saúde Coletiva, é frequentemente usada a afiliação religiosa como única dimensão da religiosidade. O presente estudo objetivou investigar a adequação do uso do instrumento Duke Religious Index (DUREL) no âmbito da pesquisa em Saúde Coletiva, ao avaliar as capacidades psicométricas do instrumento quando aplicado a uma população representativa de usuários dos serviços de atenção primária à saúde de um município de porte médio do interior do Estado de São Paulo. Foi encontrada uma adequada consistência interna para o instrumento e validade convergente-discriminante. Os resultados sugerem que o uso do DUREL não é restrito à pesquisa em saúde mental e que sua utilização pode trazer novas perspectivas para o entendimento de eventos de interesse na área da Saúde Coletiva.

Religiosity is an important variable in health research, given its known association with the health-disease process and important questions about the well-being, attitudes, practices and satisfaction with care and services. However, in the research in Public Health, it is often used religious affiliation as the only dimension of religiosity. This study aims to investigate the appropriateness of using the Duke Religious Index scale (DUREL) in the context of the Public Health research, evaluating the psychometric capabilities of the instrument when applied to a representative sample of users of primary care services to health in a medium-sized city of the interior of São Paulo State, Southeast Brazil. It was found an adequate internal consistency for the instrument and satisfactory convergent-discriminant validity. The results suggest that the use of DUREL is not restricted to research in mental health, and that its use can bring new perspectives for the understanding of events of interest in the field of Public Health.

A model of skin infection with Leishmania amazonensiswith low doses of parasites is compared to infection with high doses of L. amazonensis and low and high doses of Leishmania major. C57BL/6 mice were infected with 10³ or 10(6) parasites in the ear and the outcome of infection was assessed. The appearance of lesions in mice infected with 10³ parasites was delayed compared to mice infected with 10(6) Leishmania and parasites were detectable at the infection site before lesions became apparent. Mice infected with L. amazonensisdisplayed persistent lesions, whereas infection with L. major spontaneously healed in all groups, although lymphocytes persisted at the site of infection after healing. Macrophages persisted only in L. amazonensis-infected mice. High-dose L. amazonensis-infected mice produced lower levels of IFN-γ and TNF than mice infected with L. major. No correlation between the persistence of parasites and IL-10 levels and the production of nitric oxide or urea by macrophages was found. We conclude that infection with low doses of L. amazonensisin the dermis changes the course of infection by delaying the appearance of lesions. However, low-dose infection does not change the outcomes of susceptibility and cytokine production described for subcutaneous infection with high numbers of parasites.

O ruído ocupacional é considerado um risco físico bastante freqüente em quase todos os segmentos industriais e, desse modo, merece atenção especial por parte dos profissionais da saúde e segurança do trabalho. O presente estudo investigou a presença de queixas e alterações audiométricas em trabalhadores de indústrias madeireiras do interior de Rondônia. Participaram do estudo 16 trabalhadores de três indústrias, os quais foram submetidos a uma entrevista sobre a audição, bem como ao exame audiológico por meio da audiometria tonal liminar e da imitanciometria. Todos os participantes eram do gênero masculino, sendo que a maioria apresentava idade inferior a 25 anos e referiu não haver concluído o Ensino Fundamental. Queixas auditivas e uso de protetor auricular foram referidos pela metade da amostra. Os traçados audiométricos revelaram alteração na metade da amostra.

Occupational noise is considered a physical risk that is frequent in almost all industrial segments. That is why occupational safety and health professionals give it special attention. The present study investigated the presence of audiometric alterations in wood industry workers from the countryside of Rondônia, Brazil. Sixteen workers of three industries took part in the study. They were interviewed on their hearing capacities and went through audiologic examination by means of preliminary tonal audiometry and acustic impedance tests. All the participants were male, most of them under 25 years old. They reported not having finished elementary school. Half of the sample presented auditory complaints and mentioned use of hearing protectors. Audiometric tracings disclosed alterations in half of the sample.

OBJETIVO: investigar se as perdas dentárias em indivíduos adultos apresentam relação com as queixas de fala, mastigação e deglutição. MÉTODOS: participaram deste estudo 50 indivíduos adultos, trabalhadores de uma Avícola, do município de Bariri (SP), com faixa etária entre 18 e 52 anos. Os participantes selecionados foram submetidos à avaliação odontológica por um cirurgião-dentista e à entrevista fonoaudiológica, por duas fonoaudiólogas, em um consultório do município que mantém contrato de prestação de serviço com a Avícola. Para análise dos resultados, foram comparados os indivíduos com e sem perda dos elementos dentários, denominados de grupo experimental (GE) e grupo controle (GC), respectivamente, a partir da aplicação do teste Qui-Quadrado. RESULTADOS: os resultados revelaram maior ocorrência de mastigação unilateral no GE. Queixas quanto à dificuldade e dor na mastigação estiveram presentes apenas no GE, com diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos (p<0,05). O tempo de deglutição mostrou-se inadequado para a maioria dos indivíduos em ambos os grupos. A maioria dos indivíduos do GC mencionou utilizar algum tipo de líquido para facilitar a deglutição. Nenhum indivíduo mencionou queixas de fala. CONCLUSÃO: os achados revelaram que a ausência de elementos dentários em indivíduos adultos apresentou relação apenas entre dificuldade e dor durante a mastigação.

PURPOSE: to investigate if tooth absence in adults shows any relationship with chewing, swallowing and speech complaints. METHODS: 50 adults, who were poultry farm workers from Bariri municipality, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, between the ages of 18 and 52, took part in this study. The selected participants were evaluated by a dentist and interview were carried out by two speech and language pathologist, in one of the municipality's office which has a contract of service rendering with the poultry farm. For analyzing the results, individuals with and without tooth loss, referred to as, respectively, the experimental group (EG) and the control group (CG), and were compared based on the performance of the Chi-Square test. RESULTS: the results revealed a higher occurrence of unilateral chewing in the EG (61.54%) and the chewing time showed itself inadequate for the most of the individuals in both groups. Claims of difficulties and pain in chewing were present only in the EG, which showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Most of the individuals of the CG also mentioned the use of some drinking liquids to facilitate swallowing, without a statistically significant difference. There was no report of complaints related to speech in both groups. CONCLUSION: the findings revealed that the absence of teeth in adults showed relation only with the complaints with difficulty and pain during chewing.

OBJETIVOS: o presente estudo pretendeu investigar se o padrão facial acarreta implicações no desempenho das funções de respiração, mastigação, deglutição e fala em indivíduos com má oclusão Classe III esquelética. METODOLOGIA: analisaram-se os dados da avaliação de 40 pacientes adultos com má oclusão Classe III, sendo 25 dolicocefálicos e 15 mesocefálicos. Consideraram-se aspectos relacionados à postura habitual de lábios e língua, modo respiratório, tipo mastigatório, padrão de deglutição e fala. RESULTADOS: a postura alterada de lábios foi significantemente maior para o grupo de dolicocefálicos, enquanto a postura de língua no assoalho da boca foi predominante em ambos os grupos. Quanto ao modo respiratório, verificou-se que o modo oral ou oro-nasal foi significantemente maior para o grupo de dolicocefálicos. A mastigação mostrou-se alterada para ambos os grupos, enquanto a interposição de língua durante a deglutição predominou no grupo mesocefálico e a anteriorização de língua na fala no dolicocefálico. A interposição de língua na deglutição mostrou-se relacionada com a ocorrência de anteriorização de língua na fala. CONCLUSÕES: o tipo dolicocefálico contribui para a ocorrência de alterações na postura habitual dos lábios, bem como nas funções de respiração e fala, enquanto o tipo mesocefálico influenciou as características de deglutição de indivíduos com má oclusão Classe III esquelética.

AIM: the present study aims at investigating whether the facial pattern may cause any alterations in the performance of breathing, mastication, deglutition and speaking functions in individuals with Class III skeletal malocclusion. METHOD: data from evaluation of 50 adult patients with Class III malocclusion were analyzed, of which 25 were dolicocephalic and 15 mesocephalic. Aspects related with the habitual posture of the lips and tongue, breathing manner, masticatory type, deglutition and speaking pattern were also considered. RESULTS: the altered posture of the lips was significantly higher for the dolicocephalic group, whereas the tongue posture on the floor of the mouth was predominant in both groups considered. As for the breathing manner, it could be observed that the oral or oro-nasal manner was significantly higher for the dolicocephalic group. The presence of tongue interposition in deglutition showed itself related with the occurrence of fronting of the tongue in speech. CONCLUSIONS: the dolicocephalic type contributes towards the occurrence of alterations in the habitual lip posture as well as in the breathing and speaking functions, while the mesocephalic type has influenced the deglutition characteristics in individuals with class III skeletal malocclusion.
