ABSTRACT: For honey production, beekeepers add one or more supers to the hives to allow honeybees to store their products. However, the increase in hive space can affect the social and health organization in the colony, promoting stress. This study assessed the management of honey production, physicochemical honey properties, population development, and forages immune system gene expression patterns to be used as biomarker for monitoring beekeeping welfare. The treatments comprised 40 beehives divided in four treatments. Treatment 1 - control, supers added according to storage necessity. Treatments 2, 3, and 4 presented two, three, and four supers at the beginning of the experiment, respectively. T1 presented greater honey production (39.4 % increased). No difference in open brood area in the colonies was observed and honey properties and only T2 showed closed brood area higher than the other treatments. Foragers from T4 showed higher catalase and defensin gene expression at the middle-end experiment. Thus, the increasing internal space at the beginning of honey season can affect honey production and immune system of foragers. Catalase and defensin can be used as biomarkers for monitoring honey production welfare.

The feasibility of converting sawmill residues in electricity through gasification was evaluated in two ejido sawmills, Rocheachi and Tatahuichi, in the Guachochi municipality of Chihuahua State. The area has a semi cold climate, with temperature and precipitation annual means of 10,6 ºC and 800 mm, respectively; the tree cover is dominated by pine and pine-oak communities with Pinus arizonica and P. duranguensis being the main species used for logging. The residues flow was estimated and its chemical composition and heating value characterized. The selected technology was the fixed bed downdraft gasifier; the costs and specifications data were provided by a Chinese supplier. The main assumptions were: 1,3 kgDM/kwh, 80% plant factor, electricity output sold for street lighting at 80% of commercial price. The financial viability was evaluated through the configuration of (100, 200, 400 and 800) kw systems and three scenarios: base, optimistic and pessimistic. The effect of additional revenues from carbon credits sold at the voluntary market at 4, 5 and 6 US$/tCO2 was assessed. The internal rate of return (IRR) increased consistently with increasing the systems' capacity with the 800kw being the most economically attractive. Without carbon credits, the 100 kw system showed no positive values at any scenario whereas the 800 kw system was the only one with positive IRR in all the scenarios with a range of 3% to 13%; the additional revenues from carbon credits added 2,3 and 2,9% to the low and high scenarios, respectively. In the context of the study, the systems evaluated would satisfy the additionality criteria required by the carbon market.

Se evaluó la factibilidad de generar energía eléctrica a partir del uso de residuos del aserrío mediante la tecnología de gasificación en dos aserraderos ejidales, Rocheachi (RO) y Tatahuichi (TA), en el municipio de Guachochi, Chihuahua. El área se ubica en un clima semifrío, con medias anuales de temperatura y precipitación de 10,6 °C y 800 mm, respectivamente; la vegetación está constituida por bosque de pino y pino-encino; las especies maderables son principalmente Pinus arizonica y P. durangensis. Se caracterizó el flujo de residuos, su composición química y su valor energético. Se seleccionó la tecnología de gasificación de cama fija con flujo hacia abajo con costos y especificaciones de un proveedor chino. Se asumió una conversión bioenergética de 1,3 kgMS/kWh y un factor de planta de 80%; el uso total de la electricidad sería alumbrado público municipal al 80% del costo de la tarifa normal. Se evaluó la viabilidad financiera de sistemas con capacidades a (100, 200, 400 y 800) kW bajo tres escenarios: base, optimista y pesimista. Se valoró el efecto de ingresos adicionales por venta de bonos de carbono en el mercado voluntario a (4, 5 y 6) US$/tCO2. La tasa interna de retorno (TIR) se incrementó consistentemente con la capacidad del sistema; el sistema a 800kW tuvo la mejor perspectiva económica. Los resultados fueron negativos y positivos en todos los escenarios para las capacidades de 100 kW y 800 kW, respectivamente. Sin bonos de carbono, la rentabilidad privada solo resulta aceptable (13%) en el sistema a 800kW en un escenario optimista. El impacto de los bonos se reflejó en incrementos en la TIR de 1,1 a 1,6% en el sistema de 400 kW y de 2,3 a 2,9% en el de 800 kW. Bajo estas condiciones, los sistemas evaluados reunirían los requisitos de adicionalidad que demanda el mercado del carbono.

Espécies de Cucurbitáceas são cultivadas mundialmente e são dependentes de abelhas para polinizacão e estabelecimento de fruto. Experimentos de campo e laboratório foram conduzidos na Universidade de Cornell, na cidade de Ithaca, em Nova York, durante os anos de 1996 e 1997 para determinar a remoção e deposição de pólen por abelhas em abóbora (Cucurbita pepo L.) variedade Howden e fatores relacionados com atratividade da flor masculina. Vários parâmetros foram avaliados depois da antese da flor: (1) remoção de pólen das anteras por abelhas, (2) deposição de pólen no estigma por abelhas, (3) quantidade de pólen no corpo das abelhas, (4) estabelecimento de frutos depois da polinização por abelha, e (5) atratividade da flor masculina via poros nectaríferos. Com uma visita as abelhas removeram 13.765 grãos de pólen, ficando no corpo entre 1.050 a 3.990 grãos. A quantidade de pólen depositada no estigma pelas abelhas variou de acordo com o número de visitas, de 53 grãos com uma visita, para 1.253 grãos com 12 visitas, e o número médio de grãos em cada visita variou de 53 a 230 grãos. A porcentage de frutos estabelecidos foi máxima (100%) quando as flores receberam 12 visitas de Apis mellifera, correspondendo a uma carga de 1.253 grãos de pólen. A atração da flor masculina por pólen e néctar foi aumentada pelo grau de abertura do poro do néctario da flor.

Species of Cucurbitaceae are cultivated worldwide and are depend on bee pollination for fruit set. Field and lab experiments were conducted at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, during 1996 and 1997 to determine "Howden" pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) pollen removal and deposition by honeybees and factors relating to male flower attractiveness. Several parameters were evaluated in flowers at anthesis: (1) removal of pollen from anthers by honey bees, (2) pollen deposition on the stigma by honey bees, (3) amount of pollen on the body of honey bees, (4) fruit set after bee pollination, and (5) male flower nectary's pores and flower attractiveness. Honey bees carried between 1,050 to 3,990 pollen grains and 13,765 were removed from an anther after one visit. The amount of pollen deposited on the stigma by the honey bees varied according to the number of visits, from 53 grains with one visit, to 1,253 grains with 12 visits, and the mean number of grains in each visit varied from 53 to 230 grains. The percentage of established fruits was higher (100%) when the flowers received 12 visits of Apis mellifera, corresponding to a load 1,253 pollen grains. The attractiveness of the male flower for pollen and nectar collection was increased by the degree of opening of the access pore to the nectary in the flower.

A produção de frutos e sementes de várias culturas é favorecida quando abelhas visitam suas flores, efetuando a polinização. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a polinização em moranga (Cucurbita maxima Duch. var. Exposição), no que se refere à identificação dos insetos que visitam mais freqüentemente suas flores, o tempo e tipo de recurso floral coletado e o resultado das visitas destes insetos na frutificação, tamanho, peso e número de sementes dos frutos. Apis mellifera L. foi responsável por 73.4% das visitas realizadas por abelhas, coletando pólen em 34.5 s e néctar em 43.9 s e 29.3 s, respectivamente para as flores femininas e masculinas. Trigona spinipes (Fabr.) coletou apenas néctar, em tempo médio de 60.5 s, representando 26.6% das visitas realizadas por abelhas. Diabrotica speciosa (Germ.) somente se alimentou das pétalas da flor. Não houve produção de frutos quando não ocorreu visita de insetos. Nas flores com livre visitação de insetos a frutificação foi de 40%. Quanto maior o número, até 16, de visitas de A. mellifera nas flores femininas, maior a frutificação, tamanho, peso e número de sementes. A frutificação foi de 35% no tratamento em que as flores permaneceram disponíveis à visitação desde o início da antese até às 9h00. A partir deste horário não houve frutificação, evidenciando o importante papel da A. mellifera como agente polinizador da moranga, já que foi o único inseto visitante até às 9h00.

The production of fruits and seeds of many crops is increased when bees visit their flowers pollinating them. The aim of this research was to study the pollination of pumpkins (Cucurbita maxima Duch. var. Exposição), to determine the diversity of insects visiting its flowers, the time and type of provision obtained and the effect of the visits on fruit set, fruit size and weight, and number of seeds. Apis mellifera L. accounted for 73.4% of the visits made by bees, collecting pollen during 34.5 s per flower and nectar in 43.9 s and 29.3 s from female and male flowers, respectively. Trigona spinipes (Fabr.) collected only nectar, during a mean time of 60.5 s per flower, and represented 26.6% of the visits by bees. Diabrotica speciosa (Germ.) only fed on the petals of the flower. When no insect visits occurred, there was no production of fruits. In the flowers with free visitation by insects, fruit set was 40%. The higher the number of visits, up to 16, by A. mellifera to female flowers, the greater was the fruit set, fruit size and weight, and number of seeds. In flowers visited by insects from the onset of anthesis until 9 a.m., fruit set was 35%. After 9 a.m., there was no fruit set, demonstrating the important role of A. mellifera as a pollinating agent of pumpkin, since it was the only insect visiting up to 9 a.m.

Com o objetivo de se estudar a biologia floral em moranga (Cucurbita maxima), variedade Exposição, realizaram-se dois ensaios, utilizando-se 128 plantas, numa área de 2.000 m². A abertura e o murchamento das flores ocorreu, em média, às 6p5 e 13h52, respectivamente. Havia, em média, 2,26 flores masculinas para cada flor feminina. As flores femininas produziram, em média, 138,9% mais néctar que as masculinas. A produção de néctar foi menor no segundo ensaio devido à menor precipitação e menor umidade relativa do ar. A concentração total de açúcares do néctar foi 0,3 e 3,8% maior nas flores femininas em relação às masculinas, respectivamente, para o primeiro e segundo ensaios. As flores masculinas produziram, em média, 129.021 grãos de pólen por flor, com 91,2% viáveis às 9h00. O estigma das flores femininas foi receptivo aos grãos de pólen, em média, até às 13p0. As flores femininas foram mais atrativas que as masculinas.

In order to study pumpkin floral biology (Cucurbita maxima) var. "Exposição", were conduced two tests, using 128 plants, in 2,000 m². The opening and the withering of the flowers happened, on average, 6p5 and 13h52, respectively. There were, on average, 2.26 male flowers for each female flower. The female flowers produced, on average 138.9% more nectar than the male ones. The nectar production was smaller in the second test because of a lesser due precipitation and smaller relative humidity of the air. The sugar concentration in the nectar was 0.3 and 3.8% larger in the female flowers in relation to the male ones, respectively for the 1st and 2nd tests. The male flowers produced 129,021 pollen grains for flower, with 91.2% viable at 9h00. The stigma of the female flowers was receptive to the pollen grains, on average, to the 13p0. The female flowers were more attractive than the male ones.

As espécies das cucurbitáceas dependem da polinização por abelhas para produzir frutos. O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial da C. Pepo para produzir pólen e néctar, no sentido de ajudar a manter colônias no campo visando a polinização. Plantas de abóbora foram cultivadas no campo, em 1996 e 1997. Antes da antese, flores masculinas foram cobertas para prevenir visitas de abelhas e outros insetos. Depois da antese as flores foram desprotegidas e os seguintes parâmetros foram avaliados: 1) produção de néctar; 2) concentração total de açúcar no néctar; 3) reposição de néctar e 4) produção de pólen e flores durante o ciclo da cultura. A produção de néctar variou de 18 a 79 µL flor-1 e aumentou progressivamente de 7h00 para 13h00. A concentração de açúcares, avaliada às 7h00, 9h00 e 11h00, não variou, apresentando uma média de 50,5% ± 0,5% em 1996 e 40,5% ± 0,6% em 1997. Às 13h00 a concentração decresceu para 42% em 1996 e para 35% em 1997. A produção diária de néctar não foi influenciada pela remoção do néctar em diferentes horas do dia, indicando que a produção de néctar não é estimulada ou inibida pela freqüente remoção. O número de grãos de pólen não variou nos dois anos, com uma média de 43.669 ± 1.382 grãos por flor. O pico de produção de flores masculinas e femininas ocorreu 60 a 66 dias após o plantio (DAP), com 34,6 flores masculinas e 2,2 flores femininas por planta, respecivamente. C. pepo tem um potencial para produção de mel e pólen de 105 e 160 kg por hectare, respectivamente, que é suficiente para alimentar, pelo menos, cinco colônias de abelhas.

Cucurbitaceae species depend on pollination by honey bees for fruit production. The overall objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of C. pepo for pollen and nectar production, that could help maintain colonies placed in the field. Plants of pumpkin were cultivated in field, in 1996 and 1997. Before anthesis, male flowers were covered to prevent visits by bees and other insects. After anthesis the flowers were uncovered and the following parameters were evaluated: 1) nectar production; 2) total sugar concentration in the nectar; 3) nectar replacement; and 4) production of pollen and flowers during the crop cycle. Nectar production varied from 18 to 79 µL flower-1 and increased progressively from 7h to 13h. The sugar concentration, measured at 7h, 9h and 11h, did not vary, averaging 50.5% ± 0.5% in 1996 and 40.5% ± 0.6% in 1997. At 13h the concentration decreased to 42% in 1996 and to 35% in 1997. Total daily nectar production was not influenced by removing nectar several times per day, indicating that nectar secretion is not stimulated or inhibited by frequent removal. The number of pollen grains did not differ in the two years, with an average of 43,669 ± 1,382 grains per flower. The peak rate of male and female flowers occurred from 60 to 66 days after planting (DAP) with 34.6 male flowers and 2.2 female flowers per plant, respectively. Cucurbita pepo has a potential for honey and pollen production of about 105 and 160 kg per hectare per season, respectively, which is enough to sustain, at least, five honeybee colonies.

Abelhas africanizadas são mais tolerantes à infestação com o ácaro Varroa jacobsoni do que abelhas de origem européia. A capacidade destas abelhas de detectar e reagir à cria infestada com este ácaro pode ser um dos fatores chaves que determina esta tolerância. Células de cria de operária foram infestadas artificialmente, abrindo o opérculo, inserindo ácaros fêmeas adultas vivas e selando as células. A habilidade das abelhas africanizadas de reconhecer e remover esta cria infestada artificialmente foi comparada com a de abelhas híbridas italianas/africanizadas e com dois grupos de abelhas italianas "puras", em três experimentos distintos. Rainhas italianas já fecundadas foram importadas dos EUA ou foram obtidas da ilha de Fernando de Noronha, Brasil, onde abelhas italianas são mantidas desde 1984. Colmeias africanizadas removeram em media 51% da cria infestada, enquanto colmeias híbridas italianas/africanizadas removeram 25%. Colmeias africanizadas também removeram uma proporção significativamente maior de cria infestada do que colmeias "puras" italianas com rainhas dos EUA (59 vs. 31%, respectivamente). Da mesma maneira, quando colmeias africanizadas foram comparadas com colmeias de abelhas italianas da ilha de Fernando de Noronha, as africanizadas foram significativamente mais eficientes na remoção de cria infestada (61 vs. 35%, respectivamente), apesar de que a população de abelhas italianas desta ilha foi exposta a varroa e elas sobreviveram sem tratamento durante mais de 12 anos. Somente as abelhas africanizadas removeram uma proporção significante da cria infestada com V. jacobsoni, quando os dados foram corrigidos pela taxa de remoção da cria das células controles.

Africanized honey bees are more tolerant of infestations with the mite Varroa jacobsoni than are honey bees of European origin. The capacity of these bees to detect and react to brood infested with this mite could be one of the factors determining this tolerance. We tested colonies of Africanized bees headed by queens from swarms collected in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo State. The Italian colonies had queens imported directly from the USA, or from the Brazilian Island of Fernando de Noronha, where varroa-infested Italian colonies have been maintained, untreated, since 1984. Recently sealed worker brood cells were artificially infested by opening the cell capping, inserting live adult female mites and resealing the cells. Control cells were treated in the same way, but without introducing mites. The ability of the Africanized honey bees to recognize and remove this artificially infested brood was compared with that of first generation Italian/Africanized hybrid bees, and with the two groups of "pure" Italian bees, in three separate experiments. Africanized colonies removed a mean of 51% of the infested brood, while Italian/Africanized hybrid colonies removed 25%. Africanized colonies also removed a significantly greater proportion of infested brood than did Italian colonies, headed by queens from the USA (59 vs. 31%, respectively). Similarly, when Africanized colonies were compared with colonies of Italian bees from Fernando de Noronha, the former were found to be significantly more efficient at removing infested brood (61 vs. 35%, respectively), even though the population of Italian bees on this island has been exposed to and survived varroa infestations (without treatment) for more than 12 years. Only the Africanized honey bees removed a significant proportion of varroa-infested brood, when the data was corrected for brood removal from control cells.
