Abstract Diachasmimorpha longicaudata is the most used braconid in biological control programs for Tephritidae fruit flies worldwide. The aim of this work was to assess the functional response and preference of this parasitoid to larvae of Ceratitis capitata and Anastrepha fraterculus, in different densities of hosts. The functional response of females of D. longicaudata was assessed, independently, in two hosts (third instar larvae of C. capitata or A. fraterculus), in seven densities 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 35 or 55 larvae of fruit flies per one female of parasitoid exposed in unit of artificial parasitism, for three hours, in at least 20 repetitions. The species showed a Type III functional response regardless of the density of host larvae, in both species, indicating that they are feasible hosts for multiplication of the parasitoid, under the conditions tested. The number of individuals parasitized and the percentage of female emergence were superior in A. fraterculus, when compared to C. capitata. Parasitism in field and progeny of female parasitoids can be incremented using larvae of A. fraterculus in the rearing of D. longicaudata.

RESUMO Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead, 1905) é um parasitoide coinobionte de larvas de Tephritidae sendo que o terceiro ínstar larval é tido como o preferencial, mas pode parasitar outros estágios larvais e competir com os parasitoides nativos. Este estudo investigou a preferência e capacidade de parasitismo de D. longicaudata em larvas de diferentes ínstares de Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (AF) e Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824) (CC). Os experimentos foram realizados em condições laboratoriais, sendo oferecido um ínstar por vez em unidades de parasitismo, havendo escolha entre os hospedeiros: 25 larvas de AF e 25 larvas de CC (foram avaliadas larvas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstar). O outro teste foi de múltipla escolha em relação ao ínstar, para larvas da mesma espécie hospedeira, sendo oferecidas três unidades de parasitismo, com 15 larvas de cada ínstar. Avaliou-se o número médio de pupários formados, parasitoides emergidos, pupários parasitados, pupas inviáveis e razão sexual. No primeiro bioensaio o número médio de parasitoides emergidos e pupários parasitados no hospedeiro AF foram significativamente superiores nos tratamentos com larvas de primeiro e segundo ínstar. Para CC não houve diferença entre os ínstares testados. No segundo bioensaio, o valor médio de parasitoides emergidos e de pupas parasitadas foi maior nas larvas de segundo e terceiro ínstar para CC, e para AF nas larvas de segundo ínstar. A razão sexual foi desviada para machos em todos os tratamentos, nos dois bioensaios. Os resultados demostram que D. longicaudata pode parasitar e ter sucesso em qualquer ínstar larval disponível, podendo competir com parasitoides de qualquer ínstar.

ABSTRACT Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead, 1905) is a koinobiont parasitoid of Tephritidae larvae, the third instar larvae of which is considered preferential, but it is able to parasitize other larval stages and compete with native parasitoids. This study investigated the preference and parasitism capacity of D. longicaudata in larvae of different instar of Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (AF) and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824) (CC). The experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions, one instar being offered at a time in parasitism units, with the following choices among the hosts: 25 AF larvae and 25 CC larvae (first, second and third instar were evaluated). The other test was a multiple-choice in relation to the instar, for larvae of the same host species, with three parasitism units being offered, with 15 larvae of each instar. The mean number of formed pupae, emerged parasitoids, parasitized pupae, unviable pupae and sex ratio were evaluated. In the first bioassay, the mean number of emerged parasitoids and parasitized pupae in the AF host were significantly higher in treatments with first and second instar larvae. For CC there was no difference between the instars tested. In the second bioassay, the mean value of emerged parasitoids and parasitized pupae, was higher in second and third instar larvae for CC, and for AF was in second instar larvae. The sex ratio was biased for males in all treatments in both bioassays. The results show that D. longicaudata can parasitize and be successful in all available larval instars, being able to compete with parasitoids of any instar.

O parasitoide de ovos Telenomus podisi Ashmead, 1893 é um importante agente de controle natural de percevejos e seu sucesso de parasitismo está associado à habilidade para a localização do hospedeiro, sendo a aprendizagem e a memória um dos fatores que podem influenciar esta interação. O trabalho avaliou a capacidade de aprendizagem e tempo de retenção da memória de T. podisi ao extrato de capim-limão [Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf. (Poales, Poaceae)], em diferentes estágios do desenvolvimento da fase imatura. Ovos de Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae) parasitados por T. podisi foram individualizados em tubos de vidro contendo papel filtro com extrato de capim-limão ou solvente acetona (controle) e mantidos em diferentes estágios do desenvolvimento jovem dos parasitoides. Após a emergência, fêmeas de T. podisi foram testadas em olfatômetro tipo "Y" aos odores de ambos tratamentos. Fêmeas inexperientes foram submetidas aos mesmos odores das experientes. Para avaliar a memória, fêmeas oriundas de ovos que permaneceram em contato com o extrato de capim-limão por todo o desenvolvimento do estágio imaturo, foram testadas, após 24, 48, 72 e 96 horas de idade ao odor de capim-limão e acetona. Fêmeas que permaneceram em contato com o capim-limão por toda a fase jovem, direcionaram-se preferencialmente para este extrato, diferente das inexperientes ou das expostas à acetona, as quais preferiram o solvente. A presença do capim-limão, durante todo o estágio do desenvolvimento imaturo, alterou a orientação quimiotáxica de T. podisi, desencadeando aprendizagem nestes organismos, a qual se manteve por até 72 horas.

The egg parasitoid Telenomus podisi Ashmead, 1893 is an important natural control agent of stink bugs. Its success as a parasitoid depends on its host-locating ability, which may be influenced by learning and memory. This study used lemongrass [Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf. (Poales, Poaceae)] extract to assess the capacity for learning and memory retention time of T. podisi at different developmental stages of the immature phase. Eggs of Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae) parasitized by T. podisi and at different parasitoid juvenile developmental stages were isolated in glass tubes containing filter paper with lemongrass extract or acetone solvent (control). After emergence, T. podisi females were tested in a Y-tube olfactometer containing both scents. Inexperienced females were subjected to the same scents as experienced. To assess memory, females that emerged from eggs that were in contact with lemongrass extract throughout the immature developmental stage were given a choice between lemongrass extract and acetone when they were 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours old. Females that had contact with the lemongrass during the juvenile phase preferred lemongrass, while inexperienced females or those exposed to acetone chose the solvent. The presence of lemongrass all through the immature developmental stage altered the chemotaxic orientation of T. podisi and prompted learning in these organisms that lasted for up to 72 hours.

A biologia de Cirrospilus neotropicus Diez & Fidalgo, tendo como hospedeiro lagartas de terceiro ínstar de Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton criadas em folhas de limoeiro ‘Cravo’ (Citrus limonia Osbeck), foi avaliada em estufa climatizada (25 ± 1ºC; fotofase de 12h), registrando-se a duração e a sobrevivência das fases imaturas, a longevidade, a razão sexual, as taxas de oviposição e a atividade de predação. Dois grupos de fêmeas foram acompanhados, um proveniente de câmaras pupais de P. citrella coletadas em pomares de citros, e, outro de uma criação de laboratório. As fêmeas foram mantidas em caixas gerbox, recebendo, a cada 48h, 12 lagartas de P. citrella, mel e pólen. A duração média do período de ovo a adulto para os indivíduos gerados por fêmeas de campo e de laboratório foi, respectivamente, de 11,8 e 11,6 dias para fêmeas e 11,6 e 10,9 dias para machos. A menor sobrevivência foi registrada para a fase larval na prole de ambos os grupos de fêmeas, 57,3% - campo e 57,4% - laboratório. A longevidade média de fêmeas do campo acasaladas (21,8 dias) foi significativamente superior a das de laboratório acasaladas (16,8 dias). A taxa média de oviposição para as fêmeas de campo (2,8 ovos/dia) foi significativamente superior às das de laboratório (1,6 ovos/dia). O mesmo foi observado para o número médio diário de picadas alimentícias (1,7 lagarta/dia para fêmeas de campo e 0,87 lagarta/dia para as de laboratório). Os dados indicam que C. neotropicus tem potencial como agente de controle biológico de P. citrella.

The biology of Cirrospilus neotropicus Diez & Fidalgo reared on third instar Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton larvae having Citrus limonia Osbeck as host plant, was evaluated under controlled conditions (25 ± 1ºC; 12h photophase). The survival, immatures development, longevity, sex ratio, host feeding and oviposition ratio of C. neotropicus, were registered. Two groups of parasitoid females were evaluated: one, with parasitoids obtained from P. citrella pupae collected in citrus orchards and the other group came from laboratory rearing. These females, after mating, were maintained individually on gerbox containers with honey and pollen as food source. At each 48h, 12 P. citrella larvae were changed. The average biological cycle of the female progenies from orchard and laboratory generation groups were 11.8 and 11.6 days, respectively. The males progenies had biological cycles of 11.6 and 10.9 days, as well. The shortest immature survival period, for both studied groups was the larval (57.3% - orchard group and 57.4% - lab group). The mated females average longevity (21.8 days) was superior than the non mated ones (9.1 days) for the orchard group. The average daily oviposition rate for this last group was also significantly superior (2.8 eggs /day) than the lab group (1.6 eggs / day). The same trend was observed for the average daily host feeding rate (1.7 larvae /day for the orchard group and 0.9 larvae/ day for the lab group). These data suggest that C. neotropicus have potencial as a biological control agent of P. citrella.

A estrutura e a composição da assembléia de parasitóides que emergiam na fase de pupa de Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, o minador-dos-citros, foram estudadas em dois pomares de citros (Citrus deliciosa Tenore cv. Montenegrina e Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck x Citrus reticulata Blanco híbrido Murcott), no Município de Montenegro (29° 68’S, 51° 46’O), RS. Em 49 ocasiões de amostragem de jul/2001 a jun/2003, todos os brotos de 24 árvores escolhidas aleatoriamente foram inspecionados. Foram registradas cinco espécies de parasitóides nativos no pomar de Murcott e seis em Montenegrina. Em Murcott, a presença de Ageniaspis citricola Logvinovskaya (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), espécie exótica, foi detectada no primeiro ano de amostragem, provavelmente migrando de áreas adjacentes ao pomar onde foi liberada para o controle do minador. Em Montenegrina, sua presença foi registrada somente no segundo ano. A. citricola foi a espécie dominante em ambas as áreas e provocou mudanças na estrutura do complexo de parasitóides de P. citrella nos dois pomares.

The structure and composition of the assemblage of pupal parasitoids of Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, the citrus leafminer, were studied in two citrus orchards (Citrus deliciosa Tenore cv. Montenegrina and Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck x Citrus reticulata Blanco hybrid Murcott), in Montenegro County (29° 68’S and 51° 46’W), southern Brazil. At fortnightly samplings, from July 2001 to June 2003, all the new shoots from 24 randomly selected trees were inspected. The species richness reached five native species in the Murcott orchard, and six in Montenegrina. In Murcott, the presence of Ageniaspis citricola (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), an exotic species, was detected in the first year of sampling, probably migrating from the nearby areas where it had been released for the miner control. In Montenegrina, its presence was only registered in the second year. A. citricola in both areas was dominant and changed the community structure of parasitoid complex of P. citrella in both orchards.

Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, o minador-das-folhas-dos-citros, é uma importante praga na cultura dos citros no mundo. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se o parasitismo em dois pomares, um de tangerineira 'Montenegrina' (Citrus deliciosa Ten.) e outro do híbrido 'Murcott' (C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck x C. reticulata Blanco), em Montenegro, RS. Em amostragens quinzenais de junho/ 2001 a junho/ 2003, todas as folhas de plantas sorteadas aleatoriamente com pupas de P. citrella foram coletadas. Em laboratório foram acondicionadas individualmente até a emergência dos parasitóides ou do minador. O índice de parasitismo total em cada estação foi calculado a partir da proporção de parasitóides emergidos em relação ao número total de indivíduos emergidos. Foram realizados testes de correlação e regressão linear simples para avaliar a relação e a influência de fatores bióticos e abióticos no índice de parasitismo. Em ambas as áreas e nos dois anos de coleta, o maior percentual de parasitismo foi registrado no outono. O percentual total foi de 36,2% para a 'Murcott' e 26,4% para 'Montenegrina' no primeiro ano e 30,2% e 37,6% respectivamente, no segundo ano. Em 'Murcott', esse índice não diferiu de um ano para outro (chi2 = 2,06; gl = 1; P > 0,05), em 'Montenegrina' o parasitismo foi significativamente maior no segundo ano (chi2 = 7,36; gl = 1; P < 0,05). Os testes de correlação e regressão linear apontaram forte influência da densidade populacional do hospedeiro registrada entre 45 e 135 dias anteriores sobre a percentagem de parasitismo.

Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, the citrus-leafminer, is an important pest of citrus worldwide. Knowledge of natural parasitism levels is fundamental to the establishment of tactics of management and control of this species. This work aimed to evaluate the parasitism in two citrus orchards, one of 'Montenegrina' (Citrus deliciosa Ten.) and the other of 'Murcott' (C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck x C. reticulata Blanco), located in Montenegro, RS. In fortnightly samplings, from July/2001 to June/2003, all leaves containing P. citrella pupae from randomly selected plants were collected and maintained individually until emergence of the parasitoids or the citrus-leafminer. Parasitism was calculated considering the number of emerged parasitoids relative to the total number of emerged individuals. Correlation and linear regression tests were done to evaluate the relationship and the influence of biotic and abiotic factors upon the parasitism index. In both orchards the greatest parasitism percentage was registered on autumn in both years. The total percentage was 36.2% in 'Murcott' and 26.4% in 'Montenegrina' in the first year, and 30.2% and 37.6%, respectively, in the second year. In 'Murcott', this index did not differed between the years (chi2 = 2.06; df = 1; P > 0.05), in 'Montenegrina' the parasitism was significantly higher in the second year (chi2 = 7.36; df = 1; P < 0.05). The correlation and linear regression tests indicated a strong influence, in the parasitism index, of the host populational density registered in the previous 45 and 135 days.

Diversas vespas parasitóides, especialmente Eulophidae e Chalcididae, têm sido registrados atuando sobre populações de Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, 1856 (larva-minadora-dos-citros), uma das principais pragas da citricultura mundial. O presente trabalho objetivou identificar o complexo de parasitóides de P. citrella em dois pomares de citros situados em Montenegro, RS, um de tangerineira variedade Montenegrina e outro do híbrido tangor Murcott. Em amostragens quinzenais de julho de 2001 a junho de 2003, todos os brotos de plantas sorteadas aleatoriamente eram inspecionados. Todas as folhas com pupas de P. citrella foram coletadas e acondicionadas individualmente em placas de Petri até a emergência dos parasitóides ou dos adultos de P. citrella. No primeiro ano foram obtidos 101 parasitóides, dos gêneros Elasmus Westwood, 1833, Cirrospilus Westwood, 1832, Sympiesis Förster, 1856 e Galeopsomyia fausta LaSalle, 1997 (Eulophidae). Ageniaspis citricola Logvinovskaya, 1983 (Encyrtidae) foi registrada somente na área de 'Murcott'. Esta espécie foi intencionalmente introduzida em pomares próximos para o controle do minador. No segundo ano foi amostrado um total de 609 parasitóides e A. citricola foi também registrada na área de 'Montenegrina'. Com a introdução e o estabelecimento da espécie exótica nos pomares, houve uma grande mudança na freqüência relativa das espécies. Ageniaspis citricola representou mais de 75% dos indivíduos presentes em ambos pomares no segundo ano, diminuindo a freqüência relativa das espécies nativas. Estudos sobre a comunidade de inimigos naturais associados ao minador-dos-citros, e o efetivo impacto que a espécie exótica causa sobre as nativas, são necessários antes de tomarem-se quaisquer medidas de controle.

Several parasitoid wasps, mainly from Eulophidae and Chalcididae families, have been registered acting upon the citrus leafminer Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, 1856 populations, one of the most important citrus pest worldwide. The present work aimed to identify the parasitoid complex of P. citrella in two citrus orchards, located in Montenegro, RS: one of the Montenegrina cultivar and the other of the hybrid tangor Murcott. In fortnightly samplings from July 2001 to June 2003, all the buds of randomly rafted plants were inspected. All the leaves, with pupae of P. citrella, were collected and individually maintained in Petri dishes until the emergence of parasitoids or adults of P. citrella. In the first year, 101 parasitoid individuals of the genus Elasmus Westwood, 1833, Cirrospilus Westwood, 1832, Sympiesis Förster, 1856 and Galeopsomyia fausta LaSalle, 1997 (Eulophidae) were obtained. Ageniaspis citricola Logvinovskaya, 1983 (Encyrtidae) was registered only in the 'Murcott' orchard. This species was intentionally introduced in nearby orchards for the leafminer control. In the second year, a total of 609 parasitoid individuals were sampled, and A. citricola was also registered in the 'Montenegrina' area. With the introduction and establishment of the exotic species in the orchards, occurred a great change in the species relative frequency. Ageniaspis citricola represented more than 75% of the individuals occurring in both orchards in the second year, and the relative frequency of the native species decreasing. Studies on the community of natural enemies associated to the citrus leafminer, and on the actual impact that the exotic species cause on the native ones are necessary before taking any measure of control.

A seleção de locais adequados à oviposição, garantindo boas condições de desenvolvimento da prole, ocorre em muitas espécies de insetos. Para predadores a estratégia de realizar posturas em vários locais da cultura é esperada, pois possibilita a colonização mais abrangente da área, diminuindo também a competição intra-específica. O conhecimento dessa estratégia é importante para a determinação do papel do predador como agente de controle de populações fitófagas. Este trabalho objetivou caracterizar posturas de Cosmoclopius nigroannulatus Stål no campo e identificar seus padrões de distribuição espacial. De agosto de 1999 a abril de 2000, em um cultivo experimental de fumo (Nicotiana tabacum), em Porto Alegre, RS, foram monitoradas 270 plantas de fumo do tipo Virgínia, variedade K326, identificadas por coordenadas alfa-numéricas. A posição das posturas era registrada na cultura e na planta em relação ao estrato (inferior, mediano e apical) e à estrutura (haste e folha). Após a eclosão das ninfas recolhiam-se os córions para contagem do número de ovos. Encontraram-se 176 posturas no campo, em 34 ocasiões de amostragem. O padrão de distribuição das posturas na quase totalidade das amostras ajustou-se à distribuição aleatória, tanto pelo índice de dispersão I (97,1%) como pela Lei da Potência de Taylor (b = 0,9633). A maioria das posturas foi encontrada no terço apical (68,4%) e na face adaxial das folhas. Constatou-se o número médio de 13,1 ± 4,98 ovos/postura. A disposição das posturas no cultivo experimental aponta para um bom aproveitamento de recursos existentes.

The search for oviposition sites with good conditions for offspring development is common in many insect species. Predators usually lay eggs in various places in a culture to allow a more complete colonization and to reduce intraspecific competition. This knowledge is important to determine the role of predators in the control of phytophagous populations. The present work aimed at characterizing Cosmoclopius nigroannulatus Stål egg masses in tobacco field, and at identifying their spatial distribution pattern. A field with 270 tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum, Virginia type, var. k326), was surveyed from August 1999 to April 2000. The experimental field was located in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Each egg mass found had its position recorded in relation to the culture (coordinates), the plant vertical stratum (inferior, middle and apical) and plant structure (steam and leaf). After nymphal emergence, the corions were collected and brought to the laboratory to record the egg number/mass. A total of 176 egg masses were found in 34 sampling occasions. The egg masses dispersion pattern followed a random distribution in almost all occasions, considering both the Dispersion Index I (97%) and the Taylor Power Law Index (b = 0.9633). Most of the eggs (68.4%) were found on the plant apical third. The adaxial leaf side was also preferred for oviposition. The mean number of eggs/mass was 13.1 ± 4.98, ranging from two to 22. The egg masses distribution pattern in the experimental plot suggests an adequate usage of the available resources.
