Abstract Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is usually asymptomatic, and its diagnosis depends on laboratory tests, with emphasis on serum creatinine and proteinuria. Objective: To assess knowledge on the role of serum creatinine as a biomarker of kidney function in a sample of the Brazilian population. Method: Cross-sectional observational study conducted in São Paulo (SP, Brazil), in which a random adult population was interviewed. Results: A total of 1138 subjects were interviewed, with a median age of 36 years old (27–52); 55.1% were female. Regarding the “creatinine” biomarker, 40.6% stated they had never performed such a test. When asked about their knowledge on the usefulness of this exam, only 19.6% knew its function. The other responses were “I don’t know” (71.6%), evaluating heart function (0.9%) and liver function (7.8%). Of those who reported they had already taken a creatinine test, only 29.4% correctly identified the role of creatinine. When dividing the groups into “knows” and “does not know” the function of creatinine, a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed regarding level of education, female sex, being a healthcare student/worker, having ever measured creatinine, knowing someone with kidney disease and older age. In the multivariate analysis, the main variable related to knowing the creatinine role was having previously taken the test (OR 5.16; 95% CI 3.16–8.43, p < 0.001). Conclusion: There is a significant lack of knowledge about creatinine and its use in checkups. The results indicate that greater efforts are needed from healthcare professionals to raise awareness on the role of serum creatinine.

Resumo Introdução: A doença renal crônica costuma ser assintomática e seu diagnóstico depende da realização de exames laboratoriais, com destaque para a creatinina sérica e pesquisa de proteinúria. Objetivo: Avaliar em uma amostra da população brasileira o conhecimento sobre o papel da creatinina sérica como marcador de função renal. Método: Estudo observacional transversal realizado na cidade de São Paulo (SP, Brasil), em que foi entrevistada uma população adulta aleatória. Resultados: Foram entrevistados 1138 indivíduos, com idade mediana de 36 anos (27–52); 55,1% do sexo feminino. Com relação ao marcador “creatinina”, 40,6% afirmaram que nunca realizaram tal dosagem. Quando questionados quanto ao conhecimento sobre a utilidade desse exame, somente 19,6% sabiam a sua função. As outras respostas foram “não sei” (71,6%), avaliar o funcionamento do coração (0,9%) e fígado (7,8%). Dos que afirmaram já terem realizado o exame de creatinina, somente 29,4% acertaram a função da creatinina. Ao dividir os grupos em “sabe” e “não sabe” a função da creatinina, percebeu-se diferença estatisticamente significante (p < 0,05) em relação ao grau de escolaridade, sexo feminino, ser aluno/trabalhador da saúde, ter dosado creatinina alguma vez, conhecer alguém com doença renal e maior idade. Na análise multivariada, a principal variável relacionada com conhecer a função da creatinina foi ter realizado o exame anteriormente (OR 5,16; IC 95% 3,16–8,43, p < 0,001). Conclusão: Há grande desconhecimento sobre a creatinina e seu uso em check-ups. Os resultados indicam que é necessário maior esforço por parte dos profissionais de saúde para divulgar o papel da creatinina sérica.

ABSTRACT School is the main environment for the formal promotion of literacy and it is the first step to the world of reading. However, with the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic, pedagogical activities had to be suspended or adapted to the remote model, causing harm to all students, and notably to those who already had school difficulties, especially those related to reading. Proficiency and the habit of reading are important conditions for academic development. Studies have shown that the application of strategies in the family context and the use of digital platforms, with the purpose of sharing readings, are practices that promote the reading habit. Therefore, the present study aimed to report the experiences of applying an online procedure to encourage reading in children with school difficulties and their respective guardians (six dyads), using a specific digital platform for sharing readings. The results obtained include a behavioral change in the children towards solid reading habits, a change in mothers' daily attitudes in the family environment towards encouraging reading, and mothers’ encouraging behaviors when sharing their children’s reading. The experiences reported were promising and, to further consolidate the findings, new studies are suggested with a sample size that allows statistical analyses, longitudinal studies and also with a possible face-to-face or hybrid application of the procedure.

RESUMO A escola é o principal ambiente para a promoção formal da alfabetização e do letramento, os quais são portas para o mundo da leitura. Porém, com a ocorrência da pandemia do COVID-19, as atividades pedagógicas tiveram que ser suspensas ou adaptadas ao modelo remoto, acarretando prejuízos a todos os alunos, e principalmente àqueles que já apresentavam dificuldades escolares, especialmente as relacionadas à leitura. Sabe-se que a proficiência e o hábito de leitura são condições importantes para o desenvolvimento acadêmico geral. Estudos têm demonstrado que a aplicação de estratégias no contexto familiar e a utilização de plataformas digitais, com a finalidade de compartilhamento de leituras, são práticas favorecedoras do hábito leitor. Dessa forma, o presente estudo objetivou relatar as experiências da aplicação online de um procedimento de incentivo à leitura, em crianças com dificuldades escolares e seus respectivos responsáveis (seis díades), com a utilização de uma plataforma digital específica para compartilhamentos de leituras. Dentre os resultados obtidos estão: a mudança de comportamentos das crianças envolvidas para maior propensão a hábitos leitores, a mudança de atitudes diárias das mães no ambiente familiar para o incentivo à leitura, e a presença de comportamentos incentivadores por parte das mães, frente ao compartilhamento de leituras de seus filhos. As experiências relatadas mostraram-se promissoras e para maior consolidação dos achados, sugerem-se novos estudos com número amostral que permita análises estatísticas, estudos longitudinais e também com uma possível aplicação presencial ou híbrida do procedimento.

Resumen El suero bovino fetal (FBS por sus siglas en inglés) es el suplemento más utilizado para el cultivo celular, ya que su compleja composición aporta los nutrientes necesarios para el crecimiento de la mayoría de las células. Es un subproducto de la industria cárnica, y su disponibilidad y producción dependen principalmente de dos factores externos incontrolables: las condiciones climáticas y los cambios en el consumo de carne vacuna. Se hizo una caracterización de un FBS que se obtuvo de la industria cárnica para su uso en el cultivo celular. Se realizaron pruebas de proteínas totales, osmolaridad, presencia o ausencia de agentes biológicos patógenos, pH, concentración de ADN, contaminantes biológicos, resultados negativos y viabilidad celular, siguiendo los estrictos lineamientos de calidad de la International Serum Industry Association (ISIA). Se compararon el FBS y el plasma derivados de la sangre de la industria cárnica con un FBS comercial. Se observaron diferencias entre los FBS en cuanto a las concentraciones de ADN y de proteína total, pero no para la osmolaridad y el pH. A pesar de las diferencias, la prueba de viabilidad no arrojó complicación para el crecimiento celular con cualquier de los sueros y el plasma. El suero obtenido de la industria cárnica podría mantener cultivos celulares y permitir la proliferación celular de manera indistinta del suero comercial. Además, si no se dispone de FBS, el plasma puede funcionar como sustituto para el mantenimiento de los cultivos celulares.

Abstract The present work aims to characterize a fetal bovine serum (FBS) obtained from the meat industry for use in cell culture. FBS is the most widely used supplement for cell culture since its complex composition provides the necessary nutrients for the growth of most cells. It is a by-product of the meat industry, and its availability and production depend mainly on two uncontrollable external factors, climatic conditions and changes in beef consumption. According to the strict quality features of the International Serum Industry Association (ISIA), tests for total proteins, osmolarity, presence or absence of pathogenic biological agents, pH, DNA concentration, biological contaminants, negative results, and cell viability were performed. The characterization of the serum in the DNA and total protein concentration tests showed significant differences. Additionally, osmolarity and pH did not present significant differences between groups. Regarding the viability test, no complication for cell growth was observed despite the differences found in the characterization. The results showed that the serum obtained from the meat industry could maintain cell cultures and allow cell proliferation compared to commercial serum. Furthermore, if FBS is not available, some kinds of plasma can be used as a surrogate to maintain cell cultures.

Abstract Introduction The associations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) with reduced saliva flow rates have not been previously reported. Objective The present study aimed to assess the association of cholesterolemia with reduced saliva flow rates in community-dwelling elderly subjects. Methods The present study analyzed 342 participants (170 males and 172 females aged between 78 and 79 years old). Unstimulated salivary flow rate (USFR) was assessed using a cotton roll method. Low-USFR was defined as 0.10 g/30 seconds. Stimulated salivary flow rate (SSFR) was assessed by having the participants chew tasteless gum for 3minutes. Low-SSFR was defined as 1.0 mL/minute. Blood samples were collected for the measurement of LDL-C, HDL-C, rheumatoid factor, hemoglobin A1c, and creatinine. To assess depression, the General Health Questionnaire 30 was used. A standardized questionnaire was completed, covering the current and previous medications of the participants and smoking status. We stratified the serum LDL-C levels of the participants as normal, moderate or severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia and serum HDL-C levels as normal or hypo-HDL cholesterolemia. Multivariate logistic regression models were established and low-USFR or low-SSFR were set as dependent variables in the aforementioned models. Results After controlling for the effects of the other variables, the odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for low-USFR were 2.25 (1.10–4.61) for moderate and 5.69 (1.55–20.8) for severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia, while that of hypo-HDL cholesterolemia was 3.40 (1.33–8.69). Severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia was also associated with low-SSFR with an OR of 3.89 (1.39–10.88). Conclusion Elderly patients with cholesterolemia have a risk of reduced salivary flow rate.

Resumen El Consejo Mexicano de Ginecología y Obstetricia certifica a los especialistas para ejercer su especialidad y brindar una atención de alta calidad a las pacientes. En la actualidad, el Consejo está rediseñando el examen de Certificación en Ginecología y Obstetricia orientado a la evaluación de competencias profesionales a partir de las actividades profesionales confiables que permitan identificar los dominios de la competencia médica en un especialista. La competencia es una variedad de habilidades ejercidas a través de múltiples dominios o aspectos del desempeño profesional; sus descriptores requieren que contengan habilidades relevantes, contexto y la etapa o nivel de evaluación. Por su parte, los dominios son un conjunto de competencias clave. Este informe incluye los resultados de la primera validación en México de dominios y competencias para la evaluación de los ginecoobstetras a partir de una metodología cualitativa que comprende una revisión de la bibliografía, grupos focales, análisis de trabajos colegiados y validación por juicio de expertos. Los resultados se presentan divididos por los ocho dominios en los que se trabajó, se mencionan los comentarios más relevantes a discutir por los cuatro grupos focales. Éstos y la validación por expertos permitió reunir comentarios valiosos, coherentes y funcionales para el sistema de evaluación que quiere llevar a cabo el Consejo. Este ejercicio permitirá el posterior desarrollo de la tabla de especificaciones, reactivos o nuevos instrumentos de evaluación coherentes con un sistema de dominios, competencias y actividades profesionales confiables.

Abstract The Mexican Council of Gynecology and Obstetrics certifies specialists to practice their specialty and provide high-quality healthcare to patients. Currently, the Council is redesigning the Gynecology and Obstetrics Certification exam, oriented to the evaluation of professional competencies based on reliable professional activities that allow the identification of domains of a specialist’s medical competencies. Competency can be defined as a variety of skills across multiple domains or aspects of professional performance. Its descriptors require to contain relevant skills, context, and the stage or level of assessment. Domains can be described as a set of competencies that are considered essential. This report includes the results of the first validation done in Mexico. The validation of domains and competencies for the evaluation of physicians in the area of Obstetrics and Gynecology is based on a qualitative methodology that includes a literature review, focus groups, analysis of collegiate works, and validation through expert judgment. The obtained results are divided into eight domains that mention the most relevant observations that were discussed by the four focus groups. The focus groups and the validation through expert judgment made it possible to gather valuable, coherent, and functional feedback for the evaluation system that the Council wants to carry out. This method will allow the subsequent development of the table of specifications, items, or new evaluation instruments congruent with a system of domains, competencies, and reliable professional activities.

■ ABSTRACT Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that preferentially affects the intertriginous skin and is associated with numerous systemic comorbidities. The perineal area is the second most commonly affected area after the armpit. Wide excision is the treatment most likely to achieve better results with a lower risk of recurrence. With extensive surgical excision, flap closure offers a greater likelihood of definitive treatment. Some flaps have been described to reconstruct defects in the perineal region after cancer, but few have been studied in treating HS. Case Report: A 43-year-old woman with perineal HS underwent resection of the lesions and reconstruction with a bilateral V-Y medial thigh fasciocutaneous flap to treat the disease. The flap allowed complete closure of the total perineum without serious complications. Conclusion: This case shows that it is useful and practical to use the V-Y medial thigh fasciocutaneous flap for perineal reconstruction after wide resections of skin, apocrine glands, and hair follicles in the treatment of HS, offering good skin coverage and subcutaneous cellular tissue with supply reliable vascular flap, which avoids sequelae associated with muscle sacrifice and reaches larger dimensions than other flaps, and can be considered in selected cases as an alternative in the surgical treatment of perineal HS.

■ RESUMO Introdução: A hidradenite supurativa (HS) é uma doença inflamatória crônica que afeta preferencialmente a pele intertriginosa e está associada a numerosas comorbidades sistêmicas. A área perineal é a segunda área mais comumente afetada depois da axila. A excisão ampla é o tratamento que tem maior probabilidade de atingir melhores resultados com menor risco de recorrência. Com a excisão cirúrgica extensa, o fechamento com retalho oferece maior probabilidade de tratamento definitivo. Alguns retalhos são descritos para reconstruir defeitos da região perineal após câncer, porém poucos deles são estudados no tratamento da HS. Relato de Caso: Mulher de 43 anos, com HS perineal, submetida a ressecção das lesões e reconstrução com retalho fasciocutâneo medial da coxa em V-Y bilateral como tratamento da doença. O retalho permitiu o fechamento completo do períneo total sem complicações graves. Conclusão: Este caso mostra que é útil e prático utilizar o retalho fasciocutâneo medial da coxa em V-Y para reconstrução perineal após ressecções amplas de pele, glândulas apócrinas e folículos pilosos no tratamento da HS, oferecendo boa cobertura de pele, e tecido celular subcutâneo com suprimento vascular confiável, que evita sequelas associadas a sacrifício de músculos e alcança dimensões maiores do que outros retalhos, podendo ser considerado em casos selecionados como uma alternativa no tratamento cirúrgico da HS perineal.

Abstract Bioavailability of nutrients, the scarcity of synthetic fertilisers, and the rising cost of fuel have all contributed to an increase in production costs, which has in turn reduced crop productivity and led scientists to seek out new methods to ensure high-quality output. In this context, various cytokinins dosages were tested in Peru to see whether they affected the quality of caigua, in an effort to address these issues. To mitigate these problems, a pot experiment was carried out to check the effects of various doses of cytokinin in the quality of caigua in Peru. The experiment consisted of 5 treatments including (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mL of cytokinin) by using (Anthesis Plus per 200 L of water) as a source, each with three replicates and placed following a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Treatment with 100 mL of cytokinins foliar analysis resulted in a caigua length of 18.9 cm, an increase in diameter of 5.65 cm, and an improvement in pulp thickness of 7.60 millimeters. Physiological parameters of caigua plants taken after 45 days of sowing were considerably improved with the same treatment. Similarly, N, K and Zn concentration in leaf was higher in case of 100 mL of cytokinins foliar analysis. Therefore, policymakers must advise using the recommended quantity of cytokinins to bring about regime transition, and formers can gain by injecting 100 mL of cytokinins to boost production and the economy. It was concluded that the adequate dose of cytokinins is in treatment T3, which raised value of potassium concentration in leaves, this influenced optimal development, strengthening against environmental stress and therefore quality. For this reason, research was carried out on the comparative study of cytokinin doses in the quality of caigua in Peru; the objective was to determine the appropriate dose to obtain higher quality fruit. Likewise, it was underlined that the objective was to employ an ecological alternative of plant origin such as the usage of phytohormone that stimulates the growth of the plant and consequently the quality of the fruit. The obtained the results were served as a recommendation for farmers in the area.

Resumo A biodisponibilidade de nutrientes, a escassez de fertilizantes sintéticos e o aumento do custo dos combustíveis contribuíram para um aumento nos custos de produção, o que, por sua vez, reduziu a produtividade das culturas e levou os cientistas a procurar novos métodos para garantir resultados de alta qualidade. Neste contexto, várias dosagens de citocininas foram testadas no Peru para examinar se afetavam a qualidade do caigua, num esforço para resolver estes problemas. Para mitigar esses problemas, foi realizado um experimento em vaso para verificar os efeitos de diversas doses de citocinina na qualidade do caigua no Peru. O experimento consistiu de cinco tratamentos, incluindo 0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 mL de citocinina utilizando Anthesis Plus por 200 L de água como fonte, cada um com três repetições e dispostos seguindo um delineamento em blocos completos casualizados (RCBD). O tratamento com 100 mL de análise foliar de citocininas resultou em comprimento de caigua de 18,9 cm, aumento de diâmetro de 5,65 cm e melhora na espessura da polpa de 7,60 mm. Os parâmetros fisiológicos das plantas de caigua colhidas após 45 dias da semeadura melhoraram consideravelmente com o mesmo tratamento. Da mesma forma, a concentração de N, K e Zn nas folhas foi maior no caso da análise foliar de 100 mL de citocininas. Portanto, os decisores políticos devem aconselhar a utilização da quantidade recomendada de citocininas para provocar a transição de regime, e os primeiros podem ganhar injetando 100 mL de citocininas para impulsionar a produção e a economia. Concluiu-se que a dose adequada de citocininas está no tratamento T3, que elevou o valor da concentração de potássio nas folhas, isso influenciou no desenvolvimento ideal, no fortalecimento contra o estresse ambiental e consequentemente na qualidade. Por esse motivo, foram realizadas pesquisas sobre o estudo comparativo de doses de citocinina na qualidade do caigua no Peru; o objetivo foi determinar a dose adequada para obter frutos de maior qualidade. Da mesma forma, foi sublinhado que o objetivo era empregar uma alternativa ecológica de origem vegetal, como a utilização de fito-hormona que estimulasse o crescimento da planta e, consequentemente, a qualidade do fruto. Os resultados obtidos serviram de recomendação para os agricultores da região.

Abstract A new small-sized species of Leporinus is described from rio Braço Norte, a tributary of rio Teles Pires, in the Tapajós drainage in the Brazilian Amazon, and its phylogenetic position is proposed based on molecular data. The new species is diagnosed among Anostomidae by having three unicuspid teeth on the premaxilla and four on the dentary, 12 scale rows around the caudal peduncle, dark blotches on the trunk, and large non-midlateral dark blotches over the body, with one or two large blotches in region ventral to the lateral line between the pectoral and pelvic fins. DNA Barcode sequences suggest that the new species is closely related to Leporinus octomaculatus. In addition, samples of intermediate forms in altered areas are herein identified as putative hybrids between the new species and L. octomaculatus. The new species is popular in the international aquarium market, and its area of occurrence has been affected by anthropogenic changes in the last years.

Resumo Uma nova espécie de pequeno porte de Leporinus é descrita do rio Braço Norte, um tributário do rio Teles Pires, bacia do rio Tapajós, na região Amazônica brasileira, e sua posição filogenética é proposta com base em dados moleculares. A espécie nova é diagnosticada entre os Anostomidae por possuir três dentes uniscuspidados no pré-maxilar e quatro no dentário, 12 fileiras de escamas ao redor do pedúnculo caudal, manchas escuras no tronco, e grandes manchas escuras não mediolaterias no corpo, possuindo uma ou duas grandes manchas entre as nadadeiras peitoral e pélvica, entre a região ventral e a linha lateral. Sequências de DNA Barcode sugerem que a nova espécie é próxima de Leporinus octomaculatus.Além disso, amostras de indivíduos intermediários, coletados em áreas alteradas, são aqui identificados como híbridos putativos entre a nova espécie e L. octomaculatus. A nova espécie é popular no mercado do aquarismo internacional, e a sua área de ocorrência foi afetada por alterações antrópicas nos últimos anos.

Abstract Studies that focus on the microbiological composition of water treatment plants (WTP) sludge, as well as its pathogenicity, are extremely necessary, especially with regard to environmental regulations, where the microbiological characterization of WTP waste can encourage new policies related to its management. In Brazil, few studies address WTP sludge, which, in general, is classified as non-hazardous and non-inert waste, with the microbiological characterization of this material being little explored. This case study performed the microbiological characterization of sludge samples from two WTPs located in the state of São Paulo, before and after the centrifugation process. The determination of microbial density and morphology, Gram staining, and the identification of the presence of total and thermotolerant coliforms were performed with samples produced in two different years, in WTPs that used different coagulants (liquid aluminum sulfate or polyaluminum chloride and ferric chloride). Results were evaluated along with the physicochemical analysis of the composition of this waste. The presence of microalgae and protozoa in non-centrifuged WTP sludge and the presence of total and thermotolerant coliforms in WTP sludge before and after centrifugation are among the main results of this study.

Resumo Estudos que tenham como foco a composição microbiológica do lodo de Estação de Tratamento de Água (ETA), bem como sua patogenicidade, são extremamente necessários, principalmente em relação às regulamentações ambientais, onde a caracterização microbiológica dos resíduos de ETAs podem incentivar novas políticas relacionadas ao seu gerenciamento. No Brasil, poucos estudos abordam o lodo de ETA, que, em geral, é classificado como resíduo não perigoso e não inerte, sendo pouco explorada a caracterização microbiológica desse material. Nesse sentido, este estudo teve como objetivo, realizar a caracterização microbiológica de amostras de lodo de duas ETAs localizadas no estado de São Paulo, antes e após o processo de centrifugação. A determinação da densidade e morfologia microbiana, coloração de Gram e a identificação da presença de coliformes totais e termotolerantes foram realizadas com amostras produzidas em dois anos distintos, em ETAs que utilizaram diferentes coagulantes (cloreto férrico e sulfato e alumínio). Os resultados foram avaliados juntamente com a análise físico-química da composição deste resíduo. A presença de microalgas e protozoários no lodo não centrifugado da ETA e a presença de coliformes totais e termotolerantes no lodo da ETA antes e após a centrifugação estão entre os principais resultados deste estudo.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize teleconsultations in neurology executed by Regula+Brasil project in Recife, a capital city in northeastern Brazil. METHODS: A descriptive study carried out by four private hospitals, in a partnership with the Ministry of Health in Brazil. Teleconsultation was performed preferably in the video modality. Conditions eligible for teleconsultation were headache, epilepsy, and cerebrovascular disorders. Period of analysis was May to September 2020. RESULTS: A total of 243 teleconsultations were analyzed, of which 76.95% was a first appointment. In 48.97% of cases, the teleconsultation represented the first opportunity for the patient to be consulted with the specialist. Among cases of first appointment, 20.16% were further referred to a face-to-face consultation and 21.81% could be redirected to primary health care. Headache disorders were the most predominant clinical conditions. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation and development of telemedicine by Regula+Brasil during the COVID-19 pandemic represented an opportunity to assess the value of having teleconsultations added along the line of care from primary care to a medical specialty, promoting the coordination of care across different levels of complexity of care in the health system and improving access to specialized care.

Resumo A mucocele oral (MO) é a lesão mais comum das glândulas salivares menores. O presente estudo teve como objetivo relatar as características clínicas e demográficas de uma grande série de MOs e identificar possíveis variáveis preditivas associadas à taxa de recorrência dessas lesões. Foi realizado um estudo transversal descritivo retrospectivo. Foram analisados 43.754 registros de biópsias de quatro serviços de patologia no Brasil. Todos os casos diagnosticados como MOs foram revisados e dados clínicos e demográficos foram coletados. Participaram do estudo 1.002 mulheres (56,2%) e 782 homens (43,8%), com média de idade de 19,8 ± 16,4 anos (variação: 01-87 anos) e proporção de mulheres para homens de 1,3:1. O lábio inferior (n=1.160; 67,4%) e assoalho da boca (n=172; 10,0%), foram os locais mais acometidos, apresentando-se clinicamente como nódulos (n=978; 79,4%) de superfície lisa (n =428; 77,5%) e coloração normal (n=768, 46,7%). A biópsia excisional foi o tratamento na maioria dos casos (n=1.392; 78,0%). As MOs recorrentes representaram 6,2% de todos os casos diagnosticados (n = 117). As recorrências recorreram mais comumente em pacientes mais jovens (idade < 20 anos) (p < 0,0001), em lesões maiores que 2 cm de diâmetro (p < 0,0001) e naquelas localizadas na superfície ventral da língua (p = 0,0351). Além disso, as taxas de recorrência foram significativamente maiores nos casos tratados com cirurgia a laser do que aqueles com cirurgia convencional utilizando bisturi (p = 0,0005). Pacientes com mucoceles devem ser informados sobre uma possível recorrência, principalmente quando encontrados no lábio ou assoalho bucal de pacientes jovens.

Abstract Oral mucocele (OM) is the most common lesion of minor salivary glands. The present study aimed to report the clinical and demographic features of a large series of OMs and identify possible predictive variables associated with the recurrence rate of these lesions. A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. A total of 43,754 biopsy records from four pathology services in Brazil were analyzed. All cases of OMs were reviewed, and clinical and demographic data were collected. The study comprised 1,002 females (56.2%) and 782 males (43.8%), with a mean age of 19.8±16.4 years (range: 01-87 years) and a 1.3:1 female-to-male ratio. The lower lip (n=1,160; 67.4%), and floor of the mouth (n=172; 10.0%), were the most common affected sites, presenting clinically as nodules (n=978; 79.4%) of smooth surface (n=428; 77.5%) and normal color (n=768, 46.7%). Excisional biopsy was the treatment in most cases (n=1,392; 78.0%). Recurrent OMs represented 6.2% of all diagnosed cases (n=117). OMs recurred more commonly in younger patients (aged<20 years) (p<0.0001), in lesions larger than 2 cm in diameter (p<0.0001), and in those located in the ventral tongue (p=0.0351). Also, recurrence rates were higher significantly in cases treated with laser surgery than in those with conventional surgery (p=0.0005). Patients with OMs should be carefully informed of its possible recurrence, especially when found on the ventral tongue of young patients.

Abstract Objective: The clinical cases of patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) were analyzed via a systematic review and meta-analysis of the clinical findings, treatments, and possible outcomes of articles retrieved via database searches. Sources: The authors searched the PubMed, Scielo, Web of Science, Science Direct, EMBASA, EBSCO, and Scopus databases for articles containing the keywords “multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children” or “MIS-C” or “PIMS-TS” or “SIMP” and “COVID-19” or “SARS-CoV-2” published between December 1st, 2019 and July 10th, 2021. Patient characteristics, tissue and organ comorbidities, the incidence of symptoms after COVID-19 infection, treatment, and patient evolution in the articles found were evaluated. The data were abstracted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Findings: In total, 98 articles (2275 patients) were selected for demographics, clinical treatment, and outcomes of patients diagnosed with MIS-C. The average age of children with MIS-C, 56.8% of whom were male, was of nine years. Fever (100%), gastrointestinal (GI) (82%), and abdominal pain (68%) were the decisive symptoms for the diagnosis of MIS-C. Shock and/or hypotension were common in patients with MIS-C. Cardiac symptoms (66%) predominated over respiratory (39%) and neurological (28%) symptoms. MIS-C treatment followed the common guidelines for treating children with septic shock and Kawasaki disease (KD) and proved to be effective. Conclusions: This meta-analysis highlights the main clinical symptoms used for the diagnosis of MIS-C, the differences between MIS-C and KD, and the severity of the inflammatory process and urgency for hospital care.

RESUMO Antecedentes: A telemedicina se desenvolve a partir da tecnologia que permite a transferência de conhecimento e o compartilhamento de informações, possibilitando a prestação de serviços de saúde à distância. Objetivo: Avaliar o número de publicações sobre teleneurologia nas últimas duas décadas no PubMed e as evidências disponíveis sobre o uso desta tecnologia em diferentes quadros clínicos neurológicos. Métodos: Avaliação quantitativa das publicações relacionadas à telemedicina e neurologia nas últimas duas décadas. O levantamento dos artigos ocorreu a partir de busca no PubMed com os descritores (“Telemedicine”[Mesh]) AND “Neurology” [Mesh]). Foi realizada uma revisão dos artigos relacionados ao tema para avaliar os processos de inovação utilizados e aplicações em diversas condições clínicas envolvendo a teleneurologia. Resultados: A busca realizada no PubMed em 14 de março de 2022 resultou em 229 publicações envolvendo o tema telemedicina e neurologia entre 1999 e 2022. Desde 2000, houve um aumento de publicações relacionadas a esse tema, com um pico de 71 artigos publicados em 2020, ano em que a Organização Mundial da Saúde definiu o status de pandemia da COVID-19. Conclusão: Nas últimas duas décadas, a teleneurologia vem se desenvolvendo com a expansão dos recursos tecnológicos e a pandemia de COVID-19 intensificou esse processo. São estudadas diferentes modalidades de telemedicina em diversas áreas da neurologia, incluindo teleconsulta e teleconsultoria, telereabilitação, telemonitorização e teleducação. Os avanços alcançados pela teleneurologia nesse período estimularam inovações tecnológicas e processos de saúde que criaram oportunidades para melhorar a assistência prestada em um mecanismo de constante evolução.

ABSTRACT Background: Telemedicine develops from technology that offers opportunities for knowledge transfer and information sharing and allows the provision of health services at a distance. Objective: To evaluate the number of publications on teleneurology in the last two decades in PubMed and the available evidence on the use of this technology in neurological clinical conditions. Methods: A quantitative assessment of publications related to telemedicine and neurology in the last two decades. A search was performed on the PubMed database for the descriptors ("Telemedicine"[Mesh]) AND "Neurology"[Mesh]). A review of the articles retrieved on the topic was carried out to evaluate the innovation processes used and applications in various clinical conditions involving teleneurology. Results: The search performed on March 14th 2022 resulted in 229 publications involving the topic of telemedicine and neurology between 1999 and 2022. Since 2000, there has been an increase in publications related to this topic, with a peak of 71 articles published in 2020, the year in which the World Health Organization defined the COVID-19 pandemic status. Conclusion: In the last two decades, teleneurology has been developing through the expansion of technological resources and the COVID-19 pandemic intensified this process. Different modalities of teleneurology are studied in several neurology subfields and include teleconsultation (between healthcare professionals or between healthcare professionals and patients), telerehabilitation, telemonitoring and tele-education. The advances achieved by teleneurology in this period encouraged technological innovations and health processes that developed opportunities to improve the care provided in a mechanism of constant evolution.

Resumo Introdução O consumo de suplementos alimentares vem aumentando e se popularizando, especialmente em conjunto com a prática de atividade física. Objetivo Investigar o uso de suplementos alimentares combinado com a prática de atividades físicas em universitários do extremo sul do Brasil. Método Estudo de delineamento transversal realizado em uma universidade pública de Rio Grande/RS, com uma amostra de 1.401 universitários. Resultados 29,7% (IC95%: 27,3-32,1) dos universitários relataram o uso de algum tipo de suplemento alimentar ao praticar atividades físicas. Os suplementos que predominaram foram: Whey Protein (79%), Maltodextrina (48%) e isotônicos (45%). As principais fontes de orientação para o uso de suplementos foram amigos e outros praticantes de academias. A análise multivariável apontou que atuais participantes de academias têm uma probabilidade 158% maior de usar suplementos em comparação a não participantes de atividades físicas em academias. Outros grupos associados ao uso de suplementos foram: universitários do sexo masculino, jovens entre 20 e 29 anos, com maior renda familiar e consumidores de álcool. Conclusão Um em cada três estudantes universitários já consumiu suplementos alimentares, e tal conduta pode estar disseminada nos espaços das academias, sem maior detalhamento dos cuidados e das necessidades para individuais para o uso.

Background Background The consumption of dietary supplements has been increasing and becoming popular, especially combined with the practice of physical activity. Objective The aim of the study was to investigate the use of dietary supplements combined with the practice of physical activities in university students in the extreme south of Brazil. Method A cross-sectional study conducted at a public university in Rio Grande/Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), with a sample of 1,401 university students. Results A total of 29.7% (95% CI: 27.3-32.1) of university students reported having used some kind of dietary supplement when practicing physical activities. The predominant supplements were: Whey Protein (79%), Maltodextrin (48%) and isotonic (45%). The main sources of guidance for using supplements were friends and other practitioners of fitness centers. The multivariate analysis showed that current gym center users are 158% more likely to use supplements compared to non-participants in physical activities at such centers. Other groups associated with the use of supplements were: male college students, young people from 20 to 29 years of age, with higher family income and alcohol users. Conclusion One in three college students have already used dietary supplements and such behavior may be widespread in gyms, without further details on the care and needs for using them.

Resumo Neste trabalho descrevemos duas espécies novas de Diapoma, uma do rio Negro, afluente do rio Uruguai, Brasil e Uruguai, e a segunda do rio Iguaçu, Brasil e Argentina. A espécie nova do rio Negro é diagnosticada de suas congêneres pela combinação das seguintes características: uma linha preta, estreita e conspícua restrita ao septo horizontal do corpo, linha lateral incompleta, dentes da série interna da pré-maxila tricuspidados, e baixa altura do corpo na vertical que passa pela origem da nadadeira dorsal (29,3–32,8% SL em machos e 27,7–33,3% SL em fêmeas). A espécie nova do rio Iguaçu é diagnosticada de suas congêneres pela combinação das seguintes características: linha lateral descontínua, nadadeira adiposa não pigmentada de preto, base da nadadeira anal longa (26,5–32,4% SL) e raios médios da nadadeira caudal com uma linha preta longitudinal. Adicionalmente, atualizamos a filogenia molecular do gênero, incluindo novas sequências destas duas espécies novas e de Diapoma thauma. Uma chave de identificação para as espécies de Diapoma é apresentada, modificada de estudo anterior.

Abstract Herein we describe two new species of Diapoma, one from the Negro River, a tributary of the Uruguay River in Brazil and Uruguay, and one from the Iguaçu River, in Brazil and Argentina. The new species from the Negro River basin is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: a black narrow and conspicuous line restricted to the body horizontal septum, incomplete lateral line, tricuspid teeth in the inner series of the premaxilla, and a lower body depth at vertical through the dorsal-fin origin (29.3–32.8% SL in males and 27.7–33.3% SL in females). The new species from the Iguaçu River basin is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: a discontinuous lateral line, adipose fin hyaline, longer anal-fin base (26.5–32.4% SL), and a longitudinal black stripe along the median region of caudal-fin rays. Additionally, we updated the molecular phylogeny of the genus, including new sequences from these two new species and Diapoma thauma. An identification key for species of Diapoma is presented, modified from previous study.
