This study evaluated the efficiency as a tool for ant survey of a sampling protocol composed of six methods, and examined the role of environmental features on the efficiency of methods complementarity . We applied them in three environments (pine, eucalyptus and native forest) in the National Forest of Chapecó and the effect of the characteristics of these environments on methods complementarity. The sampling methods were pitfall traps, two types of bait (sardines and glucose), sweep net, entomological umbrella and Malaise trap. The protocol efficiency of the protocol in the ant inventory was evaluated based on rarefaction curves, richness estimators and records of occurrence of ants. The protocol captured the greatest richness on native forest environment (S = 95), followed by the eucalyptus plantation (S = 81) and pine forest (S=78). Pitfall trap, sardine baits, Malaise trap and sweep net contributed with unique records in the three environments, while the glucose baits contributed with unique records in the eucalyptus plantation and native forest, and entomological umbrella only in eucalyptus environment. The results highlighted the importance of using complementary techniques for the ant fauna inventory irrespective of the environment complexity. Contrary to our prediction, the greater environmental complexity of the native forest with respect to the other environments was not associated to lower efficiency of using single technique.

Evaluación de un protocolo de muestreo de hormigas (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) en tres ambientes modificados en la área austral del Bosque Atlántico de Brasil: Evaluamos el uso de seis técnicas de muestreo para hormigas en tres ambientes (pino, eucalipto y bosque nativo) en el Bosque Nacional de Chapecó y el efecto de estos ambientes sobre la complementariedad del muestreo. Las técnicas de muestreo fueron las trampas de caída, dos cebos (sardina y glucosa), la red entomológica, agitación de follaje y trampa Malaise. La eficacia del conjunto de técnicas para lograr un inventario de las hormigas de estos ambientes se evaluó empleando curvas de rarefacción, estimadores de riqueza y registros de ocurrencia. El conjunto de técnicas capturó la mayor riqueza en el bosque nativo (S = 95), seguida de la plantación de eucalipto (S = 81) y bosque de pino (S = 78). La trampa de caída, el cebo de sardina, la trampa Malaise y la red entomológica mostraron registros únicos en los tres ambientes, los cebos de glucosa mostraron registros únicos en los ambientes de eucalipto y bosque nativo, y la agitación de follaje sólo en el bosque de eucalipto. Los resultados mostraron que la utilización de técnicas complementarias para el inventario de la fauna de hormigas resultó más eficiente que las técnicas por separado en todos los ambientes. Contrariamente a lo esperado, la mayor complejidad del ambiente del bosque nativo con respecto a los otros ambientes no se asoció a una menor eficiencia de la utilización de una determinada técnica.

Reportamos o primeiro registro de Crossodactylus schmidti (Anura: Hylodidae) e Proceratophrys avelinoi (Anura: Cycloramphidae) para o Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, com base em indivíduos coletados em área de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, Parque Estadual do Turvo, região noroeste do estado. Estes registros ampliam a área de distribuição das duas espécies em aproximadamente 60 km a partir da localidade mais próxima conhecida, o Município de San Vicente, Misiones, Argentina. Fornecemos, ainda, uma caracterização do sítio de vocalização de C. schmidti e determinamos a amplitude de nicho de P. avelinoi quanto ao uso de corpos d'água.

We record for the first time Crossodactylus schmidti (Anura: Hylodidae) and Proceratophrys avelinoi (Anura: Cycloramphidae) from Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, based on individuals captured in an area of Mesophytic Semideciduous Forest, the Parque Estadual do Turvo, located in the northwest region of the state. These records extend the geographical range for both species in about 60 km from the nearest known locality, the Municipality of San Vicente, Misiones, Argentina. We provide a characterization of the calling site used by males of Crossodactylus schmidti, and we also determined the niche breadth of P. avelinoi regarding to the use of water bodies.

A mirmecofauna da Floresta Nacional de Chapecó, Gleba I, foi estudada por coletas semanais realizadas de dezembro de 2003 a dezembro de 2004. Foram utilizadas armadilhas do tipo malaise, pit-fall, iscas com sardinha, iscas com glicose, rede de varredura, guarda-chuva entomológico e funil de Berlese. Três constituições vegetais foram amostradas, sendo pinus, eucalipto e Floresta Ombrófila Mista e Floresta Estacional Decidual. Foram capturadas 137.019 espécimes de nove subfamílias, 18 tribos, 36 gêneros e 121 espécies. Os índices de diversidade de Margalef obtidos foram 9,9; 9,7 e 12,6; de Shannon e Wiener 3,0; 3,2 e 3,4 e de equitabilidade de 0,69; 0,73 e 0,74, para as áreas com pinus, eucalipto e mata nativa, respectivamente. Estes resultados indicam uma distribuição mais uniforme na comunidade da mata nativa, caracterizando-se como um importante reservatório espécies de formigas no Oeste catarinense.

Mirmecofauna of the Floresta Nacional de Chapecó, Field I, was studied by weekly collections from December of 2003 to December of 2004. Malaise, pit-fall, sardine baits, glucose baits, sweeping net, entomological umbrella and Berlese funnel had been used. Three vegetal constitutions where showed, like pinus, eucalyptus Ombrófila Mista and Estacional Decidual native forests. 137.019 specimens of nine subfamilies, 18 tribes, 36 generas and 121 species were captured. The indices of diversity of Margalef were 9.9; 9.7 and 12.6; of Shannon and Wiener 3.0; 3.2 and 3.4 and of equitability of 0.69; 0.73 and 0.74, for the areas with pinus, eucalyptus and native forest, respectively. These results indicate a more uniform distribution in the community of the native forest, characterizing itself as an important reservoir species of ants in the West region of the Santa Catarina State, Brazil.
