Abstract As native tree species are often used for densification, enrichment and degraded areas recovery, a better understanding of the behavior of their seedlings in response to light exposure is needed. This study evaluates the growth and morphological behavior of five native forest species of the Brazilian Mixed Ombrophilous Forest under shading levels of 90%, 50%, and 0%. The species were measured for height to root collar diameter (RCD) ratio (H:D), leaf area (LA), Dickson’s quality index (DQI), and stem, leaf, and root biomass. The LA did not differ among the treatments for three species and did not differ among species in full sun. The results for H:D ratio, DQI, and biomass indicate better growth in treatments with greater light availability. The species are recommended to be used as follows: Cedro-vermelha in full sun; Tarumã-azeitona, Ingá-doce, and Ocotea-guaicá in varying environmental conditions; and Branquilho-bravo in 50% shade and full sun conditions.

O espaçamento ideal das árvores de Pinus taeda L., com o qual se obtém maior produção de madeira; é uma das questões a serem consideradas nas pesquisas de manejo florestal. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o desenvolvimento das árvores em diferentes espaços vitais de crescimento (entre 1,0 m² e 16,0 m² por árvore) de um experimento com nove tratamentos de espaçamento inicial implantado na região de Irati-PR. O trabalho baseou-se nas medidas de altura e DAP (diâmetro à altura do peito) em 25 árvores internas da parcela, aos sete anos após plantio das mudas oriundas de pomar de sementes clonal. Análises da variância e regressões foram usadas para interpretação dos resultados. Volumes médios entre 74,75 e 274,89 m³/ha foram comprovados. Se o objetivo for a produção volumétrica mesmo com diâmetros pequenos, deve-se optar por espaçamentos menores. Quando se desejam maiores diâmetros, a opção é por espaços maiores. Um melhor desempenho na relação entre volume e diâmetro pode ser obtido com o uso de espaços vitais entre 5,0 m² e 8,0 m² para cada árvore.

The ideal spacing of a tree species is the one that maximizes wood production. Spacing is an important matter to be considered in forest management researches. The present study aimed to evaluate the development of Pinus taeda L. in the region of Irati, southern Brazil, grown at different vital spaces (ranging from 1.0 m² to 16.0 m² per tree), provided by nine different spacing measures between plants of a field experiment carried out in randomized block design with five replications. This study was based on measures of height and diameter at breast height (DBH) on 25 trees within the plot, seven years after the planting of seedlings from a clonal seed orchard. Analyses of variance and regressions were used to interpret the results. Average volumes between 74.75 and 274.89 m³ per hectare have been verified. Considering production volume even with small diameters, one should opt for smaller spaces; when larger diameters are desired, the option should be for larger spaces. A better performance in the relationship between volume and diameter can be obtained using vital spaces between 5.0 m² and 8.0 m² for each tree.

Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, realizar uma avaliação das posturas adotadas pelos trabalhadores, nas atividades de plantio e adubação, em florestas plantadas, na região do Norte Pioneiro, Estado do Paraná. A avaliação das posturas foi realizada por meio de fotografias, filmagens e análise das cargas manuseadas pelos trabalhadores, sendo os dados, submetidos à análise no programa "Winowas" de análises de posturas. A população estudada foi composta por 13 trabalhadores, sendo seis no plantio e sete na adubação. Os resultados da atividade geral de plantio indicaram que as posturas adotadas foram prejudiciais à saúde dos trabalhadores e classificadas na Categoria 3, necessitando-se da adoção de melhorias com relação à ergonomia. Na atividade de adubação, as posturas foram classificadas na Categoria 1 e 3, sendo necessária a adoção de melhorias, com relação à ergonomia, em curto prazo. Em ambas as atividades, os trabalhadores permaneceram, a maior parte da jornada de trabalho, com as costas curvadas e manuseando cargas acima do limite estabelecido, situação prejudicial à saúde.

The objective this research was to evaluate the occupational posture of workers in planting and fertilizing activities in forest plantations in the Norte Pioneiro Region, Paraná State. The workers were photographed and filmed during the performance of their activities and data were subjected to the WinOwas software of posture analysis. The studied population consisted of 13 forest workers, with six workers at manual planting and seven at manual fertilization. The results of posture analysis in the general planting activity indicated that some postures were considered harmful to workers' health and classified as category 3, requiring ergonomic actions as soon possible. The results for the fertilizing activity indicated postures classified as category 1 and 3, requiring ergonomic solutions in both the short and long term. In both activities, the workers remained most of the workday with their backs bent and handling loads above the recommended limit, which impairs health.

Ochroma pyramidale, Bombacaceae, conhecida popularmente como pau-de-balsa, é utilizada para construção de jangadas, balsas, salva-vidas, bóias, brinquedos e na fabricação de papel e celulose. O objetivo deste estudo foi definir um método de acondicionamento de sementes de O. pyramidale, visando a conservação da viabilidade e vigor destas para sua utilização e comercialização em épocas de baixa produção. Sementes de O. pyramidale foram embaladas em sacos de papel tipo kraft e sacos de plástico (0,10 mm) e armazenadas em ambiente de laboratório (22ºC e 65% U.R.), câmara úmida (5ºC e 86% U.R.) e câmara seca (15ºC e 40% U.R.). A percentagem de germinação, teor de água e vigor das sementes foram avaliados no início e após períodos de armazenamento. Todos os tratamentos testados foram favoráveis para manutenção do vigor das sementes por 120 dias de armazenamento. As melhores condições de armazenamento para manter a viabilidade por até 400 dias foram: sacos de papel (76,5% de germinação) e sacos plásticos (65,5% de germinação) em câmara seca, e sacos plásticos em condições de laboratório (63,5% de germinação).

Balsawood (Ochroma pyramidale, Bombacaceae) is used for construction of rafts, floats, life-savers, buoys, toys and for paper and cellulose production. The objective of this study was to determine a seed storage method for O. pyramidale to conserve seed viability and vigour for use and commercialization during seasonal shortages. Seeds were put in paper (Kraft) and plastic bags (0.10 mm), and stored in three environmental conditions: laboratory (22ºC and 65% relative humidity), humid chamber (5ºC and 86% RH) and dry chamber (15ºC and 40% RH). Germination percentage, moisture content and vigour of seeds were evaluated at the beginning of the experiment and after the storage periods. All treatments maintained seed vigour for 120 days of storage. The best storage conditions to maintain seed viability for a 400-day period were: 1) paper bags in the dry chamber (76.5% germination), 2) plastic bags in the dry chamber (65.5% germination) and 3) in laboratory conditions (63.5% germination).
