Abstract Recent controversies surrounding the sociological canon have foregrounded the need to think about the process of erasing and silencing ‘non-Western’ and female contributions to the discipline. By emphasizing the androcentrism of the sociological canon, our goal is to contribute to the construction of a less biased and limited sociology through the inclusion of female voices previously excluded from its official history. We start by briefly describing the conditions that enabled this exclusion, taking the Chicago women sociologists as an example, along with the emergence of a particular conception of theory and research associated with the formation of the classical canon. Next, by questioning the use of terms such as ‘founders,’ ‘classics’ and ‘canon,’ we maintain that the existence of a canon, classical or otherwise, plays a central role in the identity of the discipline and of social theory itself. Finally, in order to productively include the contributions of sociology’s women pioneers, we propose substituting the literary metaphor of the canon with a musical one: a type of polyphony that emphasizes the contrast between different voices and simultaneously establishes how they can be combined in a common tradition that makes dialogue possible.

Resumo Controvérsias recentes em torno do cânone sociológico têm pontuado a necessidade de se pensar o processo de apagamento e silenciamento de contribuições “não-ocidentais” e femininas à disciplina. Ao enfatizar a dimensão androcêntrica do cânone sociológico, nosso objetivo é contribuir para a construção de uma sociologia menos viesada e limitada a partir da inclusão de vozes femininas excluídas da história oficial da disciplina. Inicialmente, efetuamos uma breve descrição das condições que possibilitaram a exclusão daquelas vozes, tomando como exemplo as sociólogas de Chicago, e a emergência de uma concepção particular de teoria e de pesquisa associada à formação do cânone clássico. Em seguida, ao tensionarmos o uso de termos como “fundadores”, “clássicos” e “cânone”, defendemos que a existência de um cânone, clássico ou não, desempenha papel central para a identidade da disciplina e da própria teoria social. Por fim, de forma a incluir de maneira produtiva as contribuições das pioneiras da sociologia, propomos substituir a metáfora literária do cânone por uma metáfora musical: um tipo de polifonia que enfatiza o contraste entre diferentes vozes e, ao mesmo tempo, estabelece como elas podem ser combinadas numa tradição comum que torna o diálogo possível.

Resumo O discurso sobre “ideologia de gênero” como “arma de guerra cultural” vem sendo analisado em uma série de estudos genealógicos relativos aos processos históricos recentes que possibilitaram sua emergência. Como esses estudos mostram, trata-se de um projeto alternativo de produção do que conta como conhecimento e como verdade. Contudo, pouca ou nenhuma atenção vem sendo dada aos sentidos que a expressão assume nas teorias feministas e de gênero. Ao negar que a ideologia de gênero pode ser reduzida a um mero espantalho produzido pela agenda conservadora, proponho uma espécie de história das ideias associadas à expressão, com ênfase no trabalho da socióloga Viola Klein, cujas reflexões em sociologia do conhecimento constituem uma das primeiras explorações teóricas do tema. Ao ilustrar a pluralidade de sentidos dos estudos acadêmicos sobre ideologia de gênero, argumento que, embora por vias distintas, eles convergem numa negação radical do discurso antigênero da direita global.

Abstract In the last few years, a number of genealogical studies have been published about recent historical processes that enabled the emergence of the discourse on “gender ideology” as a “weapon in the culture war.” As some of these studies suggest, what is at stake is an alternative project of knowledge and truth production. Little or no attention, however, has been given to the meanings of gender ideology internal to feminist and gender theories. Rejecting the idea that gender ideology can be reduced to a straw man produced by a conservative agenda, I propose a brief history of ideas associated with the concept, foregrounding the work of sociologist Viola Klein, whose reflections on the sociology of knowledge represent one of the first academic investigations of gender ideology. In illustrating the plethora of meanings associated with the concept, I argue that they converge towards a radical negation of the anti-gender discourse of the global right.

Nos últimos quinze ou vinte anos, tem-se estabelecido uma espécie de afinidade eletiva entre a epistemologia feminista e diversos tipos de desconstrutivismo pós-moderno, na medida em que ambos questionam a possibilidade de um conhecimento neutro, universal e relativo a sujeitos cujas identidades são concebidas como totalizantes, homogêneas e fechadas. No entanto, ao alertarem para os perigos da supergeneralização e do essencialismo, muitos dos conceitos e das categorias centrais à teoria feminista têm sido colocados sob suspeição, gerando um ceticismo crescente em relação à possibilidade de emancipação via conhecimento. Meu propósito neste artigo é demonstrar que um deslocamento de questões epistemológicas para questões ontológicas, por meio de uma tradição filosófica conhecida como realismo crítico e, em especial, pelo método das explicações constrastivas, pode contribuir para a produção de um conhecimento crítico e emancipatório, sem incorrer em práticas de universalização a priori, supergeneralização e essencialização.

Over the last 15 or 20 years, some sort of elective affinity has been established between feminist epistemology and various kinds of post-modern constructivism. This has been done to the extent that both postures question the possibility of a neutral and universal knowledge relative to subjects that are conceived in terms of totalizing, homogeneous, and closed identities. However, in spelling out the dangers of essentialism and overgeneralizing, many concepts and categories which are central to the feminist theory have been questioned, generating an increasing skepticism about the possibility of emancipatory knowledge. My aim in this paper is to demonstrate that critical realism's replacement of epistemological questions for ontological ones and its method of contrastive explanations may contribute to the construction of a type of knowledge that is both critical and emancipatory. Simultaneously, this is a type of knowledge that avoids practices such as a priori universalization, overgeneralizing, and essentialism.

Depuis 15 ou 20 ans, on a vu se mettre en place une espèce d'affinité élective entre l'épistémologie féministe et les divers genres de déconstruction postmoderne qui questionnent la possibilité d'une connaissance neutre, universelle et relative par rapport à des sujets dont les identités sont conçues comme totalisantes, homogènes et fermées. Néanmoins, en nous alertant sur les dangers de la surgénéralisation et de l'essentialisme, plusieurs des concepts et des catégories centrales à la théorie féministe ont été mis en question, générant un scepticisme croissant par rapport à la possibilité d'émancipation par le savoir. Le but de cet article est de démontrer que le déplacement des questions épistémologiques vers des questions ontologiques, au moyen d'une tradition philosophique connue comme réalisme critique et, en particulier, par la méthode d'explication par contraste, peut contribuer à la production d'un savoir critique et émancipateur tout en évitant le piège de pratiques d'universalisation a priori, de surgénéralisation et d'essentialisme.

The article describes critical realism as a philosophical approach that stresses some themes central to all sociological thought: the relation between philosophy and sociology; the notion of cause; the problem of naturalism; the relation between concepts, models, and reality; the relation between agency and structure, and so on. It is further argued that in positing the non-dissolution of the ontological and epistemological dimensions of knowledge, critical realism may represent a viable alternative to the dead-ends of conventionalism and skepticism found in the positivist and pragmatist approaches.

Cet article cherche à montrer le réalisme critique comme une démarche philosophique qui souligne quelques thèmes importants pour la réflexion sociologique: la relation entre philosophie et sociologie; la notion de cause; le problème du naturalisme; la relation entre concepts, modèles et réalité; la relation entre agence et structure etc. En outre, il cherche à établir que le réalisme critique, une fois posée la non dissolution entre les dimensions ontologique et épistémologique de la connaissance, peut représenter une alternative possible aux impasses du conventionalisme et du scepticisme présentes dans les approches positivistes et pragmatistes.

A obra do sociólogo francês Raymond Boudon é analisada sob a perspectiva da relação agência e estrutura. Argumenta-se que a possibilidade de síntese entre agência e estrutura está ligada à combinação de uma causalidade relativa aos atores e outra relativa às estruturas sociais. Sustenta-se ainda que essa combinação é efetuada de maneira implícita em diversas partes da obra de Boudon, contrariando suas prescrições metodológicas.

The work of the French sociologist Raymond Boudon is analysed from the standpoint of the relationship between agency and structure. It is argued that the possibility of a synthesis between agency and structure is linked with the combination of two kinds of causality: one related to the actor and the other related to social structures. It is further argued that this combination is implicitly made in Boudon 's works, in spite of his methodological prescriptions.
