ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic has been shown to be a probable aggravator of psychological responses such as anxiety and depression. This study aimed to assess the correlation between symptoms of anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic and the existence of symptoms associated with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) in a Brazilian university population. METHODS: This epidemiological, cross-sectional clinical study evaluated its variables of interest using the COVID-19 Fear Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A and HADS-D), Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Dysfunction (DC/TMD) and Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC) questionnaires. RESULTS: A total of 373 participants (females = 273) with a mean age of 23.8±5.45 years were included in this study. In addition, 78.2% of participants with anxiety symptoms and 54.5% of participants with depression symptoms reported a high level of TMD-related parafunction (p<0.01). The presence of anxiety symptoms increased the odds of developing intense fear of COVID-19 by 14.9 times (p<0.001) and the odds of developing moderate fear of COVID-19 by 3.5 times (p<0.001). The presence of an intense fear of COVID-19 increased the chances of developing anxiety symptoms by 17.15 times (p<0.001), while the presence of a moderate fear increased these chances by 3.12 times (p<0.001). In addition, the presence of intense (p=0.01) or moderate (p=0.018) COVID-19 fears increased the odds of developing TMD-related pain symptoms by 2.47 and 1.84 times, respectively, in this population. CONCLUSION: The presence of painful TMD symptoms was possibly influenced by fear of COVID-19. This, in turn, was related to the presence of anxiety and depression symptoms reported by the target population of this study.

RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: A pandemia de COVID-19 mostrou-se um provável agravante de respostas psicológicas como ansiedade e depressão. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a correlação entre sintomas de ansiedade e depressão durante o período da pandemia de COVID-19 e a existência de sintomas associados à disfunção temporomandibular (DTM) em uma população universitária brasileira. MÉTODOS: Este estudo clínico epidemiológico e transversal avaliou as suas variáveis de interesse por meio dos questionários Escala de Medo do COVID-19, Escala Hospitalar de Ansiedade e Depressão (HADS-A e HADS-D), Critérios Diagnósticos para Disfunção Temporomandibular (DC/DTM) e Checklist de Comportamentos Orais (OBC). RESULTADOS: Ao todo, 373 participantes (sexo feminino = 273), com média de idade de 23,8±5,45 anos foram incluídos neste estudo. Ademais, 78,2% dos participantes com sintomas de ansiedade e 54,5% dos participantes com sintomas de depressão reportaram alto nível de parafunção relacionada à DTM (p<0,01). A presença de sintomas de ansiedade aumentou em 14,9 vezes as chances de desenvolvimento de um quadro de medo intenso do COVID-19 (p<0,001) e de um quadro de 3,5 vezes nas chances de desenvolvimento de medo moderado do COVID-19 (p<0,001). A presença de um medo intenso do COVID-19 aumentou em 17,15 vezes as chances de desenvolvimento de sintomas de ansiedade (p<0,001), enquanto a presença de um medo moderado aumentou essas chances em 3,12 vezes (p<0,001). Ademais, a presença de medos intensos (p=0,01) ou moderados (p=0,018) do COVID-19 aumentou 2,47 e 1,84 vezes, respectivamente, as chances de desenvolvimento de sintomatologias dolorosas relacionadas à DTM nessa população. CONCLUSÃO: A presença dos sintomas dolorosos da DTM foi possivelmente influenciada pelo medo do COVID-19. Isso, por sua vez, esteve relacionado à presença de sintomas de ansiedade e de depressão, reportados pela população-alvo deste estudo.

ABSTRACT Objective To compare serum amyloid A concentrations between overweight and eutrophic children and adolescents and to relate it to lipid profiles, glucose tolerance, and carotid intima-media thickness. Methods One hundred children and adolescents (mean age: 10.8±3.16 years) were included and divided into two groups: overweight and non-overweight. The following were evaluated: Z-score body mass index, carotid intima-media thickness, lipid metabolism biomarkers (lipid profile and apolipoproteins A1 and B), inflammatory biomarkers (ultra-sensitive C-reactive protein and serum amyloid A), and glucose homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance. Results The groups were homogeneous in age, sex, and pubertal stage. Higher levels of triglycerides, apolipoprotein B, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, ultrasensitive C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, and carotid intima-media thickness were observed in the overweight group. In the multivariate analysis, age (OR=1.73; 95%CI: 1.16-2.60, p=0.007), Z-score body mass index (OR=3.76; 95%CI: 1.64-8.59, p=0.002), apolipoprotein-B (OR=1.1; 95%CI: 1.01-1.2, p=0.030), and carotid intima-media thickness (OR=5.00; 95%CI: 1.38-18.04, p=0.014) were independently associated with serum amyloid A levels above the fourth quartile of the studied sample (>9.4mg/dL). Conclusion Overweight children and adolescents had higher serum amyloid A concentrations than eutrophic children. There was an independent association between higher concentrations of serum amyloid A and Z-score, body mass index, apolipoprotein B, and carotid intima-media thickness, indicating the importance of this inflammatory biomarker in identifying the early risk of atherosclerosis.

Resumen Introducción: Los snacks se han convertido en una parte importante de la dieta diaria, sin embargo, su perfil nutricional podría mejorarse añadiendo ingredientes con beneficios para la salud. El objetivo de este trabajo fue desarrollar un snack dietético funcional utilizando harina de algarroba negra y arándanos de descarte y evaluar su composición química y funcional. Metodología: Se prepararon tres formulaciones utilizando diferentes proporciones de harina de trigo y harina de algarroba negra: 60:40; 50:50; y 40:60, respectivamente. Se determinó la composición química proximal mediante los procedimientos metodológicos de la AOAC, así como también se analizaron las propiedades funcionales. Resultados: Se obtuvieron tres snacks dietéticos, éstos mostraron una reducción calórica del 20 - 23%. En todos los snacks se logró un aumento del contenido proteico de más del 60% y se observó un contenido mayor de fibra dietética total (DS2) en comparación con los snacks comerciales. Todas las formulaciones mostraron una reducción en el contenido de compuestos bioactivos durante el procesamiento. Conclusiones: Los snacks mostraron propiedades funcionales, mayor contenido en proteínas y un valor calórico total fue reducido en comparación con los productos comerciales disponibles. El DS2 fue el snack con mayor actividad antioxidante y, según los valores de fibra, es un producto con “alto contenido en fibra”. A pesar de las pérdidas causadas por el proceso de cocción en el contenido de compuestos bioactivos, la actividad antioxidante fue superior al 50% en todos los snacks elaborados.

Abstract Introduction: Snacks have become an important part of the daily diet, however, their nutritional profile could be improved by adding ingredients with health benefits. The aim of this work was to develop a functional dietetic snack using black carob flour and discarded blueberries, and to evaluate its chemical and functional composition. Methodology: Three formulations were prepared using different proportions of wheat flour and black carob flour: 60:40; 50:50; and 40:60, respectively. Proximal chemical composition was determined by the procedures of AOAC methods and functional properties were also analyzed. Results: Three dietary snacks were obtained, which showed a caloric reduction of 20 - 23%. In all snacks, an increase in protein content of more than 60% was achieved and a higher total dietary fiber content (DS2) was observed compared to commercial snacks. All formulations showed a reduction in bioactive compound content during processing. Conclusions: The snacks showed functional properties, higher protein content and a reduced total caloric value compared to commercially available products. DS2 was the snack with the highest antioxidant activity and, according to fiber values, is a product with “high fiber content”. Despite the losses caused by the cooking process in the content of bioactive compounds, the antioxidant activity was greater than 50% in all the snacks produced.

Resumo Fundamento O diagnóstico de síndrome coronária aguda (SCA) e a estratificação de risco contemporâneos são fundamentais para o manejo apropriado e redução da mortalidade e eventos isquêmicos recorrentes, tanto na fase aguda quanto após hospitalização. A Definição Universal de Infarto do Miocárdio recomenda a detecção de curva de troponina acima do limite superior do percentil 99. Objetivos Avaliar a ocorrência de óbito e infarto agudo do miocárdio (IAM) na fase precoce em pacientes sem elevação de troponina (<0,034 ng/mL), pacientes com mínima elevação [acima do percentil 99 (>0,034 ng/mL e <0,12 ng/mL)], e pacientes com maiores elevações [acima do ponto de corte para IAM pelo kit utilizado (≥0,12 ng/mL)]; e avaliar o impacto dos níveis de troponina na indicação de estratégia invasiva e revascularização miocárdica. Métodos Estudo de corte transversal de pacientes com SCA com avaliação do pico da troponina I, escores de risco, análise prospectiva de desfechos clínicos até 30 dias e testes bilaterais de significância, com nível de significância adotado sendo < 0,05. Resultados Foram avaliados 494 pacientes com SCA. Troponina > percentil 99 e abaixo do ponto de corte, assim como valores maiores (acima do ponto de corte), foram associados à maior incidência do desfecho composto (p<0,01) e de revascularização percutânea ou cirúrgica (p<0,01), sem diferença significante em mortalidade até 30 dias. Conclusões Valores de troponina elevados acima do percentil 99 pela Definição Universal de IAM apresentam papel prognóstico e agregam informação útil ao diagnóstico clínico e escores de risco na identificação de pacientes com maior probabilidade de benefício com estratificação invasiva e procedimentos de revascularização coronária.

Abstract Background Contemporary diagnosis of ACS and risk stratification are essential for appropriate management and reduction of mortality and recurrent ischemic events, in the acute phase of disease and after hospitalization. The Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction recommends the detection of troponin levels above the 99th percentile. Objectives To evaluate the occurrence of early death and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients without elevation of troponin (<0.034 ng/mL), patients with mild elevation (above the 99th percentile [>0.034 ng/mL and <0.12 ng/mL)], and patients with significant elevation of troponin (above the diagnostic cutoff for AMI defined by the troponin kit (≥0.12 ng/mL)]; and to analyze the impact of troponin on the indication for invasive strategy and myocardial revascularization. Methods Cross-sectional cohort study of patients with ACS with assessment of peak troponin I, risk score, prospective analysis of 30-day clinical outcomes and two-sided statistical tests, with statistical significance set at p<0.05. Results A total of 494 patients with ACS were evaluated. Troponin > 99th percentile and below the cutoff point, as well as values above the cutoff, were associated with higher incidence of composite endpoint (p<0.01) and higher rates of percutaneous or surgical revascularization procedures (p<0.01), without significative difference in 30-day mortality. Conclusions Troponin levels above the 99th percentile defined by the universal definition of AMI play a prognostic role and add useful information to the clinical diagnosis and risk scores by identifying those patients who would most benefit from invasive risk stratification and coronary revascularization procedures.

SUMMARY We present the unique case of an adult Brazilian woman with severe short stature due to growth hormone deficiency with a heterozygous G to T substitution in the donor splice site of intron 3 of the growth hormone 1 (GH1) gene (c.291+1G>T). In this autosomal dominant form of growth hormone deficiency (type II), exon 3 skipping results in expression of the 17.5 kDa isoform of growth hormone, which has a dominant negative effect over the bioactive isoform, is retained in the endoplasmic reticulum, disrupts the Golgi apparatus, and impairs the secretion of other pituitary hormones in addition to growth hormone deficiency. This mechanism led to the progression of central hypothyroidism in the same patient. After 5 years of growth and thyroid hormone replacement, at the age of 33, laboratory evaluation for increased weight gain revealed high serum and urine cortisol concentrations, which could not be suppressed with dexamethasone. Magnetic resonance imaging of the sella turcica detected a pituitary macroadenoma, which was surgically removed. Histological examination confirmed an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary macroadenoma. A ubiquitin-specific peptidase 8 (USP8) somatic pathogenic variant (c.2159C>G/p.Pro720Arg) was found in the tumor. In conclusion, we report progression of isolated growth hormone deficiency due to a germline GH1 variant to combined pituitary hormone deficiency followed by hypercortisolism due to an ACTH-secreting macroadenoma with a somatic variant in USP8 in the same patient. Genetic studies allowed etiologic diagnosis and prognosis of this unique case.

Resumo No presente estudo apresentamos exemplos de avanços significativos nas pesquisas com anfíbios financiadas pela Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP), focando em descobertas recentes nos campos de ecologia de comunidades, modificação do habitat, doenças infecciosas e o sequenciamento de DNA com múltiplos propósitos. Demonstramos que a FAPESP tem sido fundamental não somente pelo financiamento direto de projetos de pesquisa e bolsas de estudo, mas também através de sua política de formação científica, fomentando colaborações internacionais com instituições de pesquisa de excelência mundial, melhorando e consolidando novas linhas de pesquisa que frequentemente dependem da combinação sinérgica entre diferentes linhas de conhecimento e ferramentas complexas. Enfatizamos que futuros estudos continuem com foco em questões básicas, como a descrição de novas espécies, bem como correções taxonômicas e sistemáticas. Além disso, esperamos uma forte integração entre diferentes disciplinas usando novas ferramentas de bioinformática e abordagens de modelagem, como o aprendizado de máquina. Essas novas abordagens serão críticas para desenvolver ainda mais nossa compreensão a respeito de questões fundamentais sobre as características da história de vida dos anfíbios, transmissão de doenças, estrutura de comunidades, biogeografia e previsões populacionais em diferentes cenários de mudanças globais, como a expansão da agricultura, uso de agrotóxicos, perda de habitat e mudanças climáticas.

Abstract Here, we summarize examples of significant advances in amphibian research supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), focusing on recent discoveries in the fields of community ecology, habitat change, infection diseases, and multipurpose DNA sequencing. We demonstrated that FAPESP has been fundamental not only by directly funding research projects and scholarships, but also through its science training policy, fostering international collaborations with world-class research institutions, improving and consolidating new lines of research that often depended on a synergetic combination of different knowledge and complex tools. We emphasized that future studies will continue to focus on basic questions, such as description of new species, as well as taxonomic and systematic corrections. Furthermore, we also expect that there will be a strong integration among different disciplines using novel bioinformatics tools and modeling approaches, such as machine learning. These new approaches will be critical to further develop our understanding of foundational questions of amphibian life-history trait variation, disease transmission, community assembly, biogeography, and population forecasts under different global change scenarios such as agricultural expansion, agrochemical use, habitat loss, and climate change.

Abstract Background: Elderly patients may present with visual function impairment after surgery, which may increase the incidence of postoperative delirium and falls and decrease their quality of life. The aim of this study was to assess visual function in elderly patients after long-duration nonocular surgery to determine the incidence and risk factors for visual function impairment after surgery. Methods: This prospective and observational study included patients aged between 60 and 80 years who had been scheduled for elective non-ocular surgery expected to last longer than 120 minutes under general anaesthesia. Ocular examinations were performed before surgery, on post-operative day 3 and on post-operative day 21 and consisted of a LogMAR-Snellen chart test, a Jager chart test, biomicroscopy, optical tonometry, ocular motility assessment and fundoscopy. Baseline characteristics of all patients as well as intraoperative and postoperative data were collected. Results: A total of 107 patients were included in the final analysis. Visual function impairment was diagnosed in 21 patients (19.6%) at POD 3. Of those, 7 patients (6.5%) still presented with visual changes at POD 21. On POD 3, compared with that at baseline, visual acuity assessed by the Snellen chart test had decreased in these patients. Significant differences regarding refraction tests and intraocular pressure measures were also found. Multivariable analysis identified diabetes mellitus, duration of surgery, hypotension during anaesthesia induction, lower peripheral oxygen saturation at the end of the procedure and body mass index as independent risk factors for postoperative visual impairment. Conclusion: In elderly patients undergoing long-duration non-ocular procedures under general anaesthesia, the incidence of visual function impairment was considerably high. Most patients recovered to baseline visual function, but clinically significant visual changes may still be present 3 weeks after surgery. Obesity, diabetes mellitus, and the duration of surgical and anaesthetic techniques appear to increase the risk of visual impairment after surgery.

RESUMEN Este artículo analiza las diferencias regionales en el impacto económico de las medidas de aislamiento ordenadas para evitar la propagación del COVID-19 en Colombia. Por medio de un modelo insumo-producto, se estiman las pérdidas económicas que resultan de extraer un grupo de empleados formales e informales de los distintos sectores de la economía. Los resultados señalan diferencias regionales en el impacto del confinamiento sobre el mercado laboral, las economías locales y sus sectores productivos. Se encuentra que las regiones periféricas concentran un mayor número de informales en aislamiento que las regiones centrales. Las pérdidas económicas oscilan desde 5,4 % del PIB (Amazonia) hasta 6,3 % (Eje Cafetero y Antioquia). JEL: R12, R15, R58.

ASTRACT This paper analyses the regional economic differences in the impact of lockdown measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 ordered by Colombia's national government. Using an input-output model, we estimate regional economic losses by extracting a group of formal and informal workers from different sectors of the economy. Results show regional differences in the impact of lockdown measures on their labour markets, local economies, and productive sectors. We also find that peripheral regions consolidate a higher number of informal workers in isolation than the interior regions. Regarding the economic impact, regional losses range between 5,4% of the GDP (Amazonia) and 6,3% (the Coffee Area and Antioquia). JEL: R12, R15, R58.

Resumo Introdução Há uma falta de estudos científicos sobre a avaliação de pacientes com distúrbios vestibulares relacionados a distúrbios da qualidade do sono e seu impacto sobre o equilíbrio e a qualidade de vida em geral. Objetivos Avaliar o impacto da qualidade do sono sobre o equilíbrio e a qualidade de vida de indivíduos com vestibulopatias periféricas. Método Foram submetidos 52 indivíduos com vestibulopatias periféricas à avaliação da qualidade do sono por meio do índice de qualidade do sono de Pittsburgh, ao exame neurotológico por meio do dizziness handicap inventory e posturografia Tetrax (Sunlight Medical Ltd.) em oito condições sensoriais. O grupo controle incluiu (G3) 32 indivíduos saudáveis. Resultados Dos indivíduos, 14 com vestibulopatia apresentaram boa qualidade de sono (G1) e 38 apresentaram má qualidade de sono (G2), conforme evidenciado pelos escores globais de índice de qualidade do sono de Pittsburgh (p = 0,001). O dizziness handicap inventory apresentou pior impacto da tontura sobre a qualidade de vida no G2 em comparação ao G1 (p = 0,045). O G2 apresentou risco mais elevado de quedas na posturografia em comparação ao G3 (p = 0,012) e índice mais alto de instabilidade postural em cinco condições sensoriais em comparação ao G3. Nos grupos com vestibulopatia, quanto pior a qualidade do sono, mais alto foi o risco de quedas (r = 0,352) e pior a qualidade de vida (r = 0,327). Conclusão Indivíduos com vestibulopatias periféricas e má qualidade de sono demonstram pior equilíbrio, comprovado pelo aumento da instabilidade postural, risco mais elevado de quedas e pior qualidade de vida percebida. A qualidade do sono é um fator preditivo de qualidade de vida percebida e risco mais elevado de quedas em indivíduos com vestibulopatias periféricas.

Abstract Introduction There is a lack of scientific studies on the assessment of patients with vestibular disorders associated with sleep quality disorders and its impact on the balance and overall quality of life. Objectives to assess the impact of the sleep quality on the balance and quality of life of individuals with peripheral vestibulopathies. Methods 52 individuals with peripheral vestibulopathies underwent sleep quality assessment through the Pittsburgh sleep quality index, neurotological examination through dizziness handicap inventory and Tetrax posturography (Sunlight Medical Ltd.) in eight sensory conditions. Thirty-two healthy individuals (G3) participated as the control group. Results Fourteen individuals with vestibulopathy had good quality of sleep (G1) and 38 showed poor quality of sleep (G2) as demonstrated by the Pittsburgh sleep quality index global scores (p = 0.001). The dizziness handicap inventory showed worse impact of the dizziness on the quality of life in G2 when compared to G1 (p = 0.045). The G2 showed higher risk of falling in posturography when compared to G3 (p = 0.012) and higher index of postural instability in five sensory conditions in comparison with G3. In the vestibulopathy groups, the worse the sleep quality, the higher the risk of falling (r = 0.352) and the worse the quality of life (r = 0.327). Conclusion Individuals with peripheral vestibulopathies and poor quality of sleep demonstrate worse balance evidenced by increased postural instability, higher risk of falls and worse perceived quality of life. The quality of sleep is a predictive factor for worse perceived quality of life and for higher risk of falls in individuals with peripheral vestibulopathies.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Thyroid ectopy is described as the presence of thyroid tissue in a location that is different from that of its usual in the lower anterior neck. It has very low prevalence and it finds its origin in disruptions in the descent from the base of the tongue to its final position during gland embriogenesis. The diagnosis is based on imaging tests and histologic studies, the treatment varies according to its location, symptoms and hormonal functionality. Double thyroid ectopy is a very rare finding, with approximately 40 cases described in the literature. Case presentation: We present a 39 year old female patient who was under follow up because of a double thyroid ectopic tissue: in the tongue base and left submandibular locations. She was derived to our Department after a growth of the submandibular subunit in the last year was detected in the computed tomography scan (CT). She was asymptomatic and thyroid functionality tests were normal. Surgical treatment of the submandibular thyroid tissue was consensuated, with a modified Risdon like approach, and monitoring of the nodule at the base of the tongue. Discussion: Thyroid ectopic tissue is a very infrequent finding and even rarer is a double ectopy. We present a patient in which a surgical approach was decided after observing a growth in one of the ectopia nodules even though she was in a euthyroidism hormonal state.

RESUMEN Introducción: Se denomina tiroides ectópico a la presencia de tejido tiroideo en una localización distinta de su habitual. Es de prevalencia muy baja y tiene su origen en alteraciones del trayecto de descenso de la glándula desde la base de la lengua hasta su posición final cervical anterior durante el desarrollo. El diagnóstico se basa en pruebas de imagen y el estudio histológico. El tratamiento varía según su localización, síntomas y funcionalidad hormonal. La ectopia doble es una situación muy infrecuente, con alrededor de 40 casos descritos en la literatura. Caso clínico: Presentamos una mujer de 39 años en seguimiento por tejido tiroideo ectópico doble en la base de la lengua y submandibular izquierda derivada a nuestras consultas por crecimiento en el último año del nódulo submandibular objetivado en la tomografía computarizada (TC) cervicofacial de control. La paciente se encontraba asintomática y las pruebas de función tiroidea eran normales. Se decidió tratamiento quirúrgico del tejido de localización submandibular con un abordaje tipo Risdon modificado y vigilancia periódica del nódulo situado en la base lingual. Discusión: El tejido tiroideo ectópico es un hallazgo muy infrecuente y la ectopia doble es aún más infrecuente. Presentamos el caso de una paciente en la que se decidió manejo quirúrgico por crecimiento de uno de los nódulos a pesar de encontrarse en un estado de eutiroidismo.

Abstract Taxonomic and cytogenetic aspects of Proceratophrys have not been thoroughly clarified in the literature; thus, the objective of the present study was to provide unprecedent karyotype data regarding P. schirchi, P. laticeps and P. melanopogon. Additionally, the karyotype of P. boiei (2n = 22) and its ZZ / ZW sex chromosome system was analyzed for different populations of southeastern and southern Brazil. All Proceratophrys species have a diploid number of 2n = 22 chromosomes. In P. schirchi, a strong C-band was found in the long arm in one of the homologues of the pair 8 in female metaphasic cells, denoting that this chromosome pair could represent the heteromorphic sex chromosome in a ZZ / ZW sex system. Despite the conserved number of chromosomes, there are considerable chromosomal differences in P. melanopogon and P. boiei (southern Brazil), strongly differentiating them cytogenetically from other species of the genus. Moreover, with the confirmation of chromosomal heteromorphism related to sexual differentiation in P. boiei and the possible description of this system in P. schirchi, the Proceratophrys genus can be regarded as an interesting group for evolutionary studies and sex chromosome differentiation in anurans.

RESUMO O termo “síndrome disfuncional do cristalino” tem sido mais aceito na área e engloba mudanças naturais devido ao envelhecimento do cristalino. A evolução dos dispositivos diagnósticos tem sido fator fundamental para melhor estadiamento, compreensão e caracterização dessas alterações. Mesmo com esses avanços tecnológicos e o uso de classificações subjetivas, como o Lens Opacities Classification System , um estadiamento objetivo da síndrome disfuncional do cristalino precoce ainda não foi estabelecido. A aberrometria ocular total e o índice de superfície ocular, associado à densitometria de Scheimpflug, mostraram-se instrumentais na detecção da síndrome disfuncional do cristalino precoce. Embora estadiamentos precoces de síndrome disfuncional do cristalino tenham sido propostos na literatura, nenhum foi reconhecido mundialmente até o momento. O objetivo desta revisão de literatura é avaliar o estado atual da síndrome disfuncional do cristalino a partir de uma perspectiva tecnológica, e propor um novo sistema de estadiamento para auxiliar os cirurgiões na tomada de decisões cirúrgicas.

ABSTRACT The term dysfunctional lens syndrome has gained acceptance in the field and encompasses natural changes due to aging of crystalline lens. The evolution of diagnostic devices has been a key factor in better staging, understanding and characterizing of these degenerative changes. Even with these technological advances and the use of subjective classifications, such as the classic Lens Opacities Classification System, an objective staging of early dysfunctional lens syndrome has yet to be established. Ocular wavefront aberrometry and objective scatter index, associated with Scheimpflug backscatter densitometry, have proven instrumental in detecting early dysfunctional lens syndrome. Staging of early dysfunctional lens syndrome has been proposed in the literature, but no classification has been recognized worldwide. The purpose of this literature review is to assess the current state of dysfunctional lens syndrome from a technological perspective and propose a new staging system to assist surgeons in making surgical decisions.

RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: A etiologia das disfunções temporomandibulares engloba fatores locais e sistêmicos, destacando-se a condição oclusal, trauma, atividades parafuncionais e estresse emocional, derivando-se os sinais de ansiedade e de depressão. Esses, por sua vez, apresentam maior propensão em se desenvolver na população universitária devido às mudanças exigidas ao ingressar na universidade e a cobrança por um bom desempenho. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a correlação de sintomas de ansiedade e de depressão e a existência de sintomas associados às disfunções temporomandibulares em estudantes universitários. MÉTODOS: Realizou-se um estudo clínico epidemiológico, aleatório e transversal, cuja amostra foi constituída por 100 estudantes universitários, aos quais foram aplicados os questionários Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders: Eixo II e o Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Para a análise estatística foram utilizados os testes Qui-quadrado e o Modelo de regressão logística. RESULTADOS: Os resultados do presente estudo foram constituídos pelas respostas de 79 mulheres e 21 homens, com média de idade de 19 anos. Foram observadas as seguintes associações: estado de saúde geral e depressão, ansiedade e dor na face/estalos, hábito de ranger/apertar os dentes ao dormir, e resposta “sim” para ansiedade, desconforto com seus dentes e depressão; estado de angustiado/preocupado com todas as questões de ansiedade; depressão e pensamentos sobre morte, dificuldade em respirar e sentir-se desanimado sobre o futuro. CONCLUSÃO: A partir dos dados obtidos foi possível concluir que a presença de sintomas relativos à ansiedade e depressão interferem nos sintomas dolorosos das disfunções temporomandibulares da população abordada.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The etiology of temporomandibular disorders includes local and systemic factors, with an emphasis on the occlusal condition, trauma, parafunctional activities, and emotional stress, deriving signs of anxiety and depression. These, in turn, are more likely to develop in the university population, due to the changes required when entering university and the demand for good performance. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between anxiety and depression symptoms and the existence of symptoms associated with temporomandibular disorders in university students. METHODS: An epidemiological, randomized, and cross-sectional clinical study conducted with 100 university students. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders: Axis II and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale questionnaires were applied. For the statistical analysis, the Chi-square tests and the Logistic regression model were used. RESULTS: The results of the present study consisted of responses from 79 women and 21 men, with a mean age of 19 years. The following associations were observed: general health status and depression; anxiety and pain in the face/ clicking; habit of grinding/clenching teeth when sleeping, and a “yes” answer to anxiety; discomfort with your teeth and depression; state of anguished/worried about all anxiety issues; depression and thoughts about death, difficulty in breathing and feeling discouraged about the future. CONCLUSION: From the data obtained, it was possible to conclude that the presence of symptoms related to anxiety and depression interfere with the painful symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in the addressed population.

Resumo A Sigatoka-negra, causada pelo fungo Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelat, é uma doença que afeta as folhas da bananeira, reduzindo a fotossíntese e ocasionando queda na produtividade. O controle baseia-se no uso de fungicidas; no entanto, essa prática eleva o custo de produção e pode causar impactos ambientais e na saúde. O plantio de cultivares resistentes mostra-se mais viável economicamente. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar a fenotipagem de diploides, visando à identificação de genótipos resistentes. Foram fenotipados 31 acessos (30 com genoma AA e um com genoma AB), a partir da expressão dos sintomas da doença, por meio de escala de notas. Estimaramse a área abaixo da curva do progresso da doença (AACPD), o índice de severidade da doença (ID) e o índice de aumento da severidade da doença (AID). A variável AID mostrou-se eficiente na identificação de acessos de bananeira com resistência à Sigatoka-negra. O índice de seleção para o ranqueamento de acessos, com moderada resistência à Sigatoka-negra, permitiu identificar os genótipos com maior resistência quantitativa. Cinco acessos diploides foram resistentes (Krasan Saichon, Zebrina, Birmanie, Nº 118 e Tuu Gia), e oito moderadamente resistentes (PA Rayong, Pisang Cici, Malaccensis 1, 028003-01, Microcarpa, Pisang Lidi, Lilin e Malbut).

Abstract Black Sigatoka (black leaf streak disease) is caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensisMorelet. This phytopathogen colonizes banana leaves, resulting in reduced photosynthesis and decreased productivity. Fungicide applications are useful to control black Sigatoka; however, they increase production costs and can have adverse environmental and health impacts. The cultivation of resistant cultivars is regarded as a more economically viable option. The objective of this study was to perform diploid phenotyping in a set of wild banana accessions to identify resistant genotypes. A total of 31 accessions (30 with AA genome and one with AB genome) were phenotyped based on the presence of disease symptoms using a scoring scale. The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), the disease severity index (DI), and the disease severity increase index (DII) were estimated. The DII variable proved to be efficient in identifying banana accessions with black Sigatoka resistance. Likewise, the selection index for ranking accessions with moderate black Sigatoka resistance allowed us to identify those genotypes with the highest quantitative resistance. Five diploid accessions (Krasan Saichon, Zebrina, Birmanie, Nº 118, and Tuu Gia) were found to be resistant to this fungal disease; eight accessions (PA Rayong, Pisang Cici, Malaccensis 1, 028003- 01, Microcarpa, Pisang Lidi, Lilin, and Malbut) were moderately resistant.
