Pituitary adenomas account for 10–15% of primary intracranial tumors. Growth hormone (GH)-secreting adenomas account for 13% of all pituitary adenomas and cause acromegaly. These tumors can be aggressive, invade surrounding structures and are highly recurrent. The objective of this study was to evaluate E-cadherin, Slug and neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) expression in GH-secreting pituitary adenomas and its relationship to tumor invasiveness. A cross–sectional study of patients who underwent hypophysectomy due to GH-secreting pituitary adenoma from April 2007 to December 2014 was carried out. The medical records were reviewed to collect clinical data. Immediately after surgery, tumor samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored in a biofreezer at –80°C for assessment of E-cadherin 1 (CDH1), SLUG (SNAI2), and NCAM (NCAM1) by real-time PCR. The samples were fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin for immunohistochemical analysis of E-cadherin and NCAM. Thirty-five patients with acromegaly were included in the study. Of these, 65.7% had invasive tumors. Immunohistochemically, E-cadherin was expressed in 96.7% of patients, and NCAM in 80% of patients. There was no statistically significant relationship between tumor grade or invasiveness and immunohistochemical expression of these markers. Regarding gene expression, 50% of cases expressed CDH1, none expressed SNAI2, and 53.3% expressed NCAM1. There was no statistically significant relationship between tumor grade or invasiveness and gene expression of CDH1, SNAI2, and NCAM1. The absence of Slug overexpression and of E-cadherin and NCAM suppression suggests that expression of these markers is not associated with tumor invasiveness in GH-secreting pituitary adenomas.

Meningiomas are common, usually benign tumors of the central nervous system that have a high rate of post-surgical recurrence or regrowth. We determined expression of the proteins merlin, NDRG2, ERBB2, and c-MYC in meningiomas using immunohistochemistry and assessed relationships between protein expression and gender, age, tumor grade, and recurrence or regrowth. The study sample comprised 60 patients, (44 women and 16 men) with a mean age of 53.2±12.7 years. Tumors were classified as grade I (n=48) or grades II and III (n=12). Expression of merlin, NDRG2, ERBB2, and c-MYC was not significantly different statistically with relation to gender, age, or meningioma recurrence or regrowth. Merlin was expressed in 100% of the cases. No statistically significant difference between tumor grade and recurrence or regrowth was identified. Statistically significant differences were identified between the mean age of patients with grade I (54.83±11.60) and grades II and III (46.58±15.08) meningiomas (P=0.043), between strong c-MYC expression and grades II and III (P<0.001), and between partial surgical resection and tumor recurrence or regrowth (P<0.001). These findings reveal the lower mean age among grades II and III meningioma patients than grade I patients, the influence of the protein merlin on tumorigenesis, the association of c-MYC with aggressive meningiomas, and that partial surgical resection is associated with tumor recurrence or regrowth.

De uma plantação de citros, com os cultivares T. Cravo (Citrus reticulata Blanco), L.Hamlin (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), T. Murcott (Citrus reticulata Blanco x Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), L. Natal (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, L. Valencia (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) e L. Pera (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), situada na "Fazenda Sete Lagoas", no município de Mogi-Guaçu (22° 22% 46° 56'W.Gr.), em Latossolo Vermelho amarelo, fase arenosa, foram coletados frutos 30 dias após florescimento, até a idade da coleta comercial. No material coletado, foram determinadas a variação da matéria seca, a concentração dos macro e micronutrientes nas folhas adjacentes ao fruto, a extração de macro e micronutríentes pelos frutos, a produção de suco (ml) por fruto e a concentração de ácido ascórbico (mg/100 ml de suco). Concluiu-se que: 1. O aumento da matéria seca, intensifica-se a partir do segundo mês apos o florescimento; 2. Com exceção da T. Cravo, ocorre uma diminuição na produção de matéria seca no final do ciclo; 3. A concentração dos macro e micronutrientes nas folhas apresenta oscilações durante o desenvolvimento do fruto; 4. A ordem decrescente de extração de nutrientes é: K, N, Ca, Mg, P = S, Fe, B, Zn, Mn, Cu; 5. A capacidade de exportação de nutrientes pelos cultivares é, em ordem decrescente: L. Pera, L. Hamlin = T. Cravo, T. Murcott, L. Valencia, L. Natal; 6. A quantidade de suco produzido por fruto, oscila entre 43 a 95 ml; 7. A concentração de ácido ascórbico (mg/100 ml de suco), varia entre 30 a 95.

The experiment was carried out in a commercial citrus orchard located in Mogi-Guaçu (22° 22'S., 46° 56'WGr.), State of São Paulo, Brazil. Five orange types were studied: Cravo (Citrus reticulata Blanco); Hamlin (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck); Natal (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck); Valencia (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) and Pera (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) and a tangerine Murcott (Citrus reticulata Blanco x Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck). Fruits were picked from 30 days after flowering to the peak of commercial harvest. Leaves nearest the fruits were collected at the same time as the fruits. Sampled material was used to determine: fruit dry weight, macronutrient and micronutrient concentration in the leaves, nutrient extraction by the fruits, juice production per fruit and ascorbic acid concentration in the juice. Fruit dry weight increased following the second month after flowering. Except for Cravo orange fruit dry weight decreased at the end of the cycle. Macronutrient and micronutrient concentrations in the leaves showed variations during fruit development. Rate of nutrient extraction in decreasing order was: K, N, Ca, Mg, P = S, Fe, B, Zn, Mn and Cu. The cultivar that exported the largest amount of nutrients was Pera followed by Hamlin = Cravo, Murcott, Valencia and Natal. Juice per fruit ranged between 43 and 95 mililiters whereas ascorbic acid concentration ranged between 30 and 95 miligrams per 100 mililiters of juice.

Com o objetivo de determinar: - a curva de crescimento do melão (Cucumis melo L.), através da acumulação de matéria seca; - os teores e consequentes acúmulos de nutrientes nos órgãos aéreos da planta, em diferentes estádios de crescimento; - a exportação de nutrientes na colheita de frutos, no ponto de consumo. Foi conduzido um ensaio em condições de campo o qual consistiu da amostragem em cinco estádios de crescimento - 15, 30, 45, 60 e 75 dias após a emergência - de plantas competitivas, as quais eram cortadas rente ao solo, divididas em caule e ramos, folhas, flores e frutos, para determinação de quantidade de matéria seca e análise química para macronutrientes minerais. Os tratamentos, então representados por épocas de amostragem, constaram de um delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Concluiu-se que: - o crescimento das plantas é inicialmente lento, intensificando-se posteriormente, com maiores incrementos entre 30 e 45 dias; - no final do ciclo, a planta acumulou 905,88 g de matéria seca, assim distribuída; caule e ramos 19,38%, folhas 30,32% e flores e frutos 50,30%; - a concentração dos nutrientes na parte aérea variou com a idade e o órgão considerado; - verifica-se nos frutos uma tendência de redução nos teores dos macronutrientes (com exceção do enxofre); - a parte aérea acumulou, aos 75 dias, em miligramas por planta: 23,08 de N; 3,46 de P; 28,90 de K; 12,74 de Ca; 5,55 de Mg; 1,59 de S. - são exportados numa colheita de uma tonelada de frutos, cerca de 1,78 kg de N; 0,33 kg de P; 2,65 kg de K; 0,14 kg de Ca; 0,21 kg de Mg; 0,09 kg de S.

An experiment was carried out under field conditions to determine: - the growth of muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) throght accumulation of dry matter; - concentration and consequent accumulation of nutrients in the aereal parts of the plant at different growth stages; - exportation of nutrients at fruit harvesting, at the time of consumption. The experiment consisted of sampling at five growth stages - 15, 30, 45, 60 and 70 days after emergence - of competitive plants, which were cut at ground level, divided into stem and branches, leaves, flowers and fruits, to determine the quantity of dry matter and for chemical analysis of mineral macronutrients. The treatments, represented by sampling time, consisted of randomized block design with four replications. It was concluded that: - the growth was slow at the deginning, increasing later, especially between 30 and 45 days; - at the end of the cycle, the plant accumulated 905,88 g dry matter as follow: stem and branches - 18,38%, leaves - 30.32%, and flowers and fruits - 50.30%; - the concentration of nutrients in the aereal parts varied according to the age and part considered; - there was a tendency for reduction in the concentration of macronutrients, except for sulphur; - at 75 days, the aereal part accumulated, in milligrams per plant: 23.08 N, 3.46 P, 28.90 K, 12.74 Ca, 5.55 Mg, 1.595 S; - in a one-ton harvest the fruits exported about 1.78 kg N, 0.33 kg P, 2.64 kg K, 0.14 kg Ca, 0.21 kg Mg, 0.09 kg S.

A pesquisa constou de um ensaio de campo e de um teste de incubação, em laboratório, com os seguintes objetivos: a. estudar efeitos de doses crescentes e métodos de aplicação de cloreto de potássio, na produção e na composição foliar de soja; b. observar alterações químicas no solo incubado com doses crescentes de cloreto de potássio; c. correlacionar efeitos de campo, com alterações químicas observadas no teste de incubação. O ensaio de campo foi instalado em um Latos solo Roxo, uti1izando-se de cultivar de soja UFV-l. O cloreto de potássio foi aplicado de duas maneiras: em sulco 5 cm abaixo e 5 cm ao lado da linha de semeadura e emiárea total, à lanço e incorporado na profundidade de aração. As doses testadas foram: 0, 50, 100 e 200 kg/ha de K2O. No florescimento, foi feito a amostragem foliar, O teste de incubação constou da incubaçao de amostras de 2 kg de TFSA proveniente da camada arável do ensaio de campo, com as se guintes doses: 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 e 12.800 kg/ha de K2O, utilizando-se como fonte o cloreto de potássio p.a, Conclusões: a. não houve resposta na produção da soja, às doses de cloreto de potássio, tanto aplicadas em sulco ou em lanço; b. a análise foliar não acusou nenhuma influência dos tratamentos nos teores foliares em nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio, cálcio, magnésio e cloro; c. não foi observado efeito salino causado pelo cloreto de potássio nas doses e nos métodos de distribuição testados.

The present work deal t wi th an experiment under field conditions and a laboratory test of soil incubation the objectives were as follows: a. to study effects on soybean grain product ion and leaf composition of increasing doses of potassium chloride applied into the soil through two methods of distribution; b. to observe chemical modifications in the soils incubated with increasing doses of potassium chloride; and, c. to correlate field effects with chemical alterations observed in the incubation test, The field experiment was carried out in a Red Latosol (Haplustox) with soybean cultivar UFV - 1. Potassium chloride was distributed through two methods: banded (5 cm below and 5 cm aside of the seed line) and broadcasted and plowed-down. Doses used were: 0; 50; 100 and 200 kg/ha of K2O. Foliar samples were taken at flowering stage. Incubation test were made in plastic bags with 2 kg of air dried fine soil, taken from the arable layer of the field experiment, with the following doses of KC1 p,a. : 0; 50; 100; 200; 400; 800; 1,600; 3.200; 6,400 and 12,800 kg/ha of K(2)0. In the conditions observed during the present work, results allowed the following conclusions: A response by soybean grain production for doses of potassium chloride, applied in both ways, banded or broadcasted, was not observed. Leaf analysis did not show treatment influence over the leaf contents for N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and CI, Potassium chloride salinity effects in both methods of distribution for all the tested closes were not observed.

Plantas de cebola (Alium cepa L.var. Baia Piriforme Precoce de Piracicaba) foram cultivadas em vasos contendo silica e irrigadas com solução nutritiva completa. Cada 15 dias a partir dos 70 dias da germinação foram coletadas plantas e separadas em folhas e bulbo. Até aos 85 dias o crescimento da cebola é lento intensificando-se apôs esta idade ate o fim do ciclo. A absorção dos nutrientes acompanha o crescimento. Uma produção de 36.700 kg de bulbo, correspondentes a um ha extrai as seguintes quantidades de nutrientes em kg: nitrogênio - 132,3, fosforo - 21,9, potássio - 177,0, cálcio - 15,9, magnesio - 17,3, enxofre - 33,8.

Onion plants (Allium cepa L. var. Baia Piriforme Precoce Piracicaba), 70 days, old were grown in pots containing 7 kg of quartz sand. Twice a day they were irrigated by percolation with complete solution. Every 15 days from the 70 th day plants were harvested divided into aerial part and bulb. The parts were weighed and analysed for N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S. Data obtained allowed for the following main conclusion: a) The initial rate of growth of the onion during the first 85 days is rather slow b) The uptake of nutrients is small until the 85 days, increasing at the 145 days. c) The following amounts of nutrients in kg/ha were absorved by a population of 166,666 plants with a production of 36,700 kg of onion: N 132.8 P 21.9 K 177.0 Ca 15.9 Mg 17.8 S 33.8

Plantas de cebola Allium cepa L. var. Baia Piriforme precoce de Piracicaba, foram cultivadas em vasos contendo silica. Foram irrigadas diversas vêzes ao dia com solução nutritiva completa e deficiente nos macronutrientes. Às plantas exibiram sintomas de carência na seguinte ordem de aparecimento: nitrogênio, cálcio, fósforo, potássio, magnésio e enxôfre. Os nutrientes foram extraídos em mg pela cebola na seguinte ordem: potássio-992, nitrogênio-658, enxôfre-168, cálcio-103, fósforo-84, magnésio-73.

Onion plants (Allium cepa L. var. Baia Piriforme Precoce de Piracicaba) were grown in pots containing 1 kg of pure quartz. Twice a day they were irrigated by percolation with nutrient solution. The treatments were: complete solution, -N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg and -S. The plants showed deficiencies symptoms in the following order: N, Ca, P, K, Mg and S. The deficiencies were comproved by chemical analysis of the different parts of the plant. The percentage of macronutrients in dry matter are expressed on the Table 3 in Portuguese text. "Levels" found in percentage of dry matter were: The amount of nutrients exported per plant, in mag, were: N-657.7; P-84.1; K-992.4; Ca-102.2; Mg-72.9; S-167.7.

The rate of nitrification of several nitrogenous fertilizers (ammonium sulfate, nitre-chalk, ureia, and cottonseed meal) was studied in three soils, namely, "terra roxa legítima", a red soil derived from basalt, "terra roxa misturada", a soil also derived from basalt but with a higher proportion of sand, and "areito Corumbataí", a sandy soil. The effects of the following treatments on nitrification were considered: addition of limestone of micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Mo), and inoculation with a suspension of spores of Aspergillus wentii, a heterotrophic nitrifier. The results showed that: in "terra roxa legítima" limestone had no influence on the nitrification rate, whereas the micronutrients estimulated the oxidation of nitre-chalk, cottonseed meal and urea; inoculation with A. wentii helped only the nitrification of ammonium sulfate and of the cottonseed meal; the latter, in all the treatments employed gave use to a smaller amount of nitrates; in "terra roxa misturada", all the fertilizers depending upon the treatments they were subjected to, presented maximum values for nitrification; limestone estimulated the oxidation of ammonium sulfate as well as the mineralization of the cottonseed meal; the addition of micronutrients helped the nitrification of all the fertilizers, except that of urea; inoculation showed a benefical influence on the nitrification of ammonium sulfate and cottonseed meal; in "arenito de Corumbatai", the amounts of nitrates produced was roughly the same for all the fertilizers investigated; limestone estimulated the nitrification of nitro-chalk, ammonium sulfate and cottonseed meal whilst the addition of micronutrients benefited only the latter two; the inoculation with A. wentii helped the oxidation of all the fertilizers. In order to study the availability of the various fertilizers above discussed, two plant growing experiments were carried cut, one in pots, using the three soil types and another one in the field, with "terra roxa misturada". In "arenito de Corumbatai" there was no significant difference in the yield both of straw and rice grains for none of the fertilizers: Chilean nitrate of soda was used as a control; ho marked agreement could be detected between the data concerning nitrification and the yield results. In "terra roxa legítima", ammonium sulfate won the competition and there was a good parallelism between nitrification and yield. In "terra roxa misturada", there was no statistical difference among the various fertilizers; the agreement between nitrification and yields was reasonable. In the field (corn), Chilean nitrate, ammonium sulfate and nitro-chalk were clearly beter than urea and cottonseed meal which did not differ from the minus nitrogen plots.
