Abstract Homonota taragui is an endemic gecko of the northeast of Argentina. We estimate demographic parameters: number of individuals by populations, sex and ontogenetic stage; sexual dimorphism; survival of this species; and describe the use of microhabitat and movement patterns. We measured 11 morphological variables, determined the sex and marked individually. We found bigger head width in males. Some factors contribute to the vulnerability of this species such as its constrained geographical distribution, use of the specific microhabitat and the isolation of their populations. We highlight demography studies as an essential data source for management and conservation of critically endangered species.

Abstract There are few data regarding the repercussion in the pulmonary function of patients who had severe or critical COVID-19 pneumonia. The objective was to describe these patients´ pulmonary function and establish an association with the severity of the disease (patients with severe or critical pneumonia), the presence of comorbidities, the tomographic involvement and the persistence of dyspnoea. Fifty-five patients were included, 40 (73%) male, media of age 54.9 (11.6) years old and body mass index (BMI) 33.1 (6.09) kg/m2. Fifty (90%) had 1 comorbidity, obesity 67%, arterial hypertension 36%, and diabetes mellitus 35%. Twenty-five (45%) had critical pneumonia. Fifteen (27%) had a spirometric alteration that suggested restriction and 32 (58%) had gas exchange defect. The latter had forced volume capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (DLCO) values significantly lower. Ninety percent presented some degree of involvement in the chest CT scan, ground glass-opacities the most frequent finding. A moderate negative correlation was found between the severity of the tomographic involvement and the DLCO levels. Thirty patients (55%) referred some degree of dyspnoea. Patients with this symptom had DLCO and KCO values below those who did not have dyspnoea: 70.5 vs. 85.1 p = 0.02 and 88 vs. 104 p = 0.02. The presence of abnormal gas exchange is the main characteristic of patients with pulmonary sequelae due to COVID-19. Our study does not show either predictor of evolution towards pulmonary sequelae or an association with the severity of the disease.

Resumen Se conocen pocos datos acerca de la repercusión en la función pulmonar de pacientes que cursaron una neumonía grave o crítica por COVID-19. El objetivo fue describir la función pulmonar de estos pacientes y establecer si existe asociación con la gravedad (neumonía grave o crítica), comorbilidades, compromiso tomográfico y persistencia de disnea. Se incluyeron 55 pacientes, 40 (73%) varones, media de edad 54.9 (11.6) años e índice de masa corporal (IMC) 33.1 (6.09) kg/m2. Cincuenta (90%) tenían una comorbilidad, obesidad 67%, hipertensión arterial 36% y diabetes mellitus 35%. Veinticinco (45%) presentaron neumonía crítica. Se hallaron 15 (27%) con una alteración que sugiere restricción y 32 (58%) presentaron trastorno del intercambio gaseoso. Aquellos con trastorno del intercambio gaseoso, tenían valores de capacidad vital forzada (FVC), volumen espiratorio forzado en el primer segundo (FEV1) y difusión de monóxido de carbono (DLCO) significativamente menores. El 90% tenía algún grado de compromiso en TAC de tórax siendo vidrio esmerilado el hallazgo más frecuente. Se encontró moderada correlación negativa entre gravedad del compromiso tomográfico y nivel de DLCO. A la consulta, 30 (55%) referían algún grado de disnea. Los pacientes con disnea presentaban valores de DLCO y KCO inferiores respecto a los que no referían disnea 70.5 vs. 85.1 p = 0.02 y 88 vs. 104 p = 0.02. La presencia de intercambio anormal de gases es la característica principal de los pacientes con secuelas pulmonares por COVID-19. De nuestro trabajo no surgen predictores para evolución hacia secuela pulmonar ni pudimos asociarlo a la gravedad de la enfermedad.

Resumen Contexto: Evaluar la eficiencia de un polielectrolito catiónico comercial como coagulante en el tratamiento de las aguas residuales de una industria láctea. Metodología: Para realizar el montaje de las pruebas de jarras con 1 l de muestra de aguas residuales de una industria láctea, se utilizó un polielectrolito catiónico como coagulante. Cada una de las pruebas se realizó bajo condiciones de mezclado rápido a 150 r. p. m. (duración 1 min), mezclado lento a 30 r. p. m. (25 min) y reposo (30 min). Resultados: Se realizaron pruebas de jarras, empleando dosis de coagulante de 100, 140, 180, 220 y 260 mg/l, obteniendo eficiencias de remoción para aceites y grasas, solidos suspendidos totales, demanda química de oxígeno (DQO), y turbidez con el uso del coagulante, entre el 27 %-62 %, 57 %-89 %, 8 %-58 % y 26 %-88 %, respectivamente. La mejor concentración resulto ser la de 140 mg/l. Conclusiones: Se concluyó que el polielectrolito catiónico comercial empleado como pretratamiento de coagulación constituye una opción para facilitar la remoción de aceites y grasas en la unidad de flotación por aire disuelto, del sistema de tratamiento de aguas residuales de la industria láctea.

Abstract Context: To evaluate the efficiency of a commercial cationic polyelectrolyte as a coagulant in the treatment of ARILs. Methodology: To make the assembly of the jar tests of 1L of sample of ARI, it was used a cationic polyelectrolyte as coagulant. Each of the test was made under conditions of fast mixture at 150 rpm (during 1 minute), slow mixture of 30 rpm (25 minutes) and resting time (30 minutes). Results: there were made jar tests, using dose of coagulant of 100, 140, 180, and 260 mg/L, getting removal efficiency of Oils and Fats (O and F), OSH, COD and Turbidity with the use of the coagulant, between 27% - 62%, 57%-89%, 8%-58%,and 26%-88% respectively. The Best concentration was the one of 140mg/L. Conclusions: It was conclude that the commercial cationic polyelectrolyte used as a pretreatment of coagulation constitute an alternative to improve the removal of O and F in the dissolved air flotation unit (DAF) from the wastewater treatment system of the dairy industry.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The region of the Americas is considered as the most unequal in the world. Human resources in health are essential for overcoming these differences, by means of addressing social determinants. Objective: To review the processes of teaching and learning about social determinants in health science programs in the region of the Americas. Methods: A literature review was carried out by searching for official documents and articles in the databases ofWeb of Science, Clinicalkey, PubMed, Science Direct and Lilacs databases. Sixty-eight documents were selected for the analysis. Results: The region of the Americas has made significant progress in terms of including public policies influencing on determinants and helping human resources in health to be trained under a primary care approach. However, it is important thathealth sciences schools in the region deepen their knowledge of pedagogical and research strategies, as well as they facilitate teaching and learning of the determinants. At the same time, progress has been observed regarding the inclusion of interprofessional education in the region. Conclusions: Health sciences programs should deepen the application of pedagogical and research strategies that facilitate teaching and learning of the determinants, which foster reflection about the role of professionals in reducing social inequalities and improving population health.

RESUMEN Introducción: La región de las Américas es considerada como la más desigual del mundo. Los recursos humanos en salud resultan fundamentales para superar estas diferencias mediante el abordaje de los Determinantes Sociales. Objetivo: Revisar los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje de los Determinantes Sociales en programas de ciencias de la salud en la región de las Américas. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión de la literatura mediante la búsqueda de documentos oficiales y artículos en las bases de datos Web of Science, Clinicalkey, PubMed, Science Direct y Lilacs. Se seleccionaron 68 documentos para su análisis. Resultados: La región de las Américas ha tenido un avance significativo en cuanto a la inclusión de las políticas públicas que actúan sobre los Determinantes y que ayudan a que los recursos humanos en salud se formen con enfoque de atención primaria. Sin embargo, es importante que las facultades de ciencias de la salud de la región profundicen en el conocimiento de estrategias pedagógicas y de investigación, y que faciliten la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de los Determinantes. A su vez, se observan avances en la inclusión de la Educación Interprofesional en la región. Conclusiones: Los programas de ciencias de la salud deben profundizar en la aplicación de estrategias pedagógicas y de investigación, que faciliten la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de los Determinantes, los cuales promueven la reflexión del papel de profesional en la disminución de las inequidades sociales y el mejoramiento en la salud de la población.

Abstract Isolated rocky outcrops represent biodiversity centers, refuges for endangered species, and favorable scenarios for endemism. Most studies in these ecosystems have been focused mainly on their flora and secondarily on different groups of animals. To highlight the value of rocky outcrops as ecosystems for biodiversity conservation, in the present study, we describe the diversity of herptiles of three isolated rocky outcrops of northeastern Argentina and compare it with that of other natural areas of the region. We conducted fieldwork from September 2010 to March 2017. We calculated the alpha diversity and the number of rare, threatened and endemic species. For comparative diversity analysis, we calculated the importance of each area for amphibians and reptiles and the beta diversity. Were recorded a total of 56 species (23 amphibians and 33 reptiles), representing 35% of the herptiles recorded for Corrientes province. These species included 19 rare species, seven threatened species, and two endemic species. The overall beta diversity showed considerably differences in species composition between the compared areas. The rocky outcrops showed higher importance for amphibians and reptiles than the other areas studied. Our study contributes to the knowledge of rocky outcrops and highlights their importance in biodiversity conservation.

Summary Natural History (NH) is a relevant discipline of the Natural Sciences that describes organisms in their environment from accurate observation. As the mother of Western sciences, its origin dates back to Aristotle’s writings. Since then it crossed human history providing essential knowledge for humanity development. After flourishing between the 17th and 19th centuries due to the exploratory travels of European naturalists to the new continents, NH has lost appreciation in its contribution to scientific knowledge. The debate about its role in sciences has swung like a pendulum between estimation and dismissal. In this contribution, we present the main themes of this debate. We expose our point of view from our experience that revalues the history of NH under the influence of Alexander von Humboldt and Amado Bonpland´ works. The specialization of sciences, technological advances, the loss of the naturalistic sense, and the connection with romanticism have been among, the main causes that have discredited NH. However, we conclude that history shows us that NH has been and is fundamental for the growth and development of humanity.

Resumen La Historia Natural (HN) es una disciplina relevante de las Ciencias Naturales que se encarga de describir a los seres vivos y su ambiente a partir de la observación precisa. Como madre de las ciencias occidentales, sus orígenes se remontan a los escritos de Aristóteles, para atravesar desde entonces la historia de la humanidad brindando conocimientos esenciales para su desarrollo. Luego de su auge entre los siglos XVII y XIX con los viajes exploratorios de los naturalistas europeos a los nuevos continentes, la HN ha perdido valoración en el aporte a la construcción del conocimiento científico. Desde entonces el debate sobre el rol de la HN en las ciencias ha oscilado como un péndulo entre su estimación y desestimación. En esta contribución, presentamos los principales temas de este debate aportando nuestro punto de vista a partir de nuestra experiencia en la revaloración de la historia de la HN, resignificada con la influencia de la obra de Alexander von Humboldt y Amado Bonpland. La especialización de las ciencias, los avances tecnológicos, la pérdida del sentido naturalista y la vinculación con el romanticismo han sido, entre otras, las principales causas que han desacreditado a la HN. Sin embargo, concluimos que la historia nos muestra que la HN ha sido y es fundamental para el crecimiento y desarrollo de la humanidad.

Abstract The diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is, after spirometry the standard and noninvasive pulmonary function test of greater clinical use. However, there are substantial errors in the interpretation of the physiological significance of the DLCO, its derived measures and, therefore the clinical significance of its alterations. In addition to the use of different nomenclatures, other sources of confusion have contributed to some negative view of the test. The technical aspects of the DLCO test have the advantage of being well standardized. But unlike what happens with other pulmonary function tests where we have reference values which allow us to determine their “normality or abnormality”, it is difficult to apply this route of analysis in the case of DLCO. The central fact in the analysis of DLCO, transference factor for CO (KCO), and alveolar volume (VA) is that for a correct interpretation it is necessary to think about the mechanism by which the pathology induces change. A KCO of 100% can be considered normal in some circumstances or pathological in others and, for the moment, the automated study report cannot discriminate. This article will address the principles of the DLCO test; present different models of analysis submit concrete examples and provide guidelines for their correct interpretation. It is considered essential to carry out an integrated analysis of the DLCO test in relation to other functional tests and clinical data.

Resumen La capacidad de difusión de monóxido de carbono (DLCO) es, después de la espirometría, la prueba de función pulmonar rutinaria y no invasiva de mayor utilidad clínica. No obstante, hay sustanciales errores de interpretación del significado fisiológico de la DLCO, de sus medidas derivadas y por consiguiente del significado clínico de sus alteraciones. Además de la utilización de diferentes nomenclaturas, otras fuentes de confusión han contribuido a cierta visión negativa de la prueba. Los aspectos técnicos de la prueba de DLCO tienen la ventaja de estar estandarizados. Pero a diferencia de lo que ocurre con otras pruebas de función pulmonar donde disponemos de valores de referencia que permiten determinar la “normalidad o anormalidad” de las mismas, es difícil aplicar esta vía de análisis en el caso de la DLCO. El hecho central en el análisis de la DLCO, el factor de transferencia para el CO (KCO), y el volumen alveolar (VA) es que para una correcta interpretación es necesario tener en cuenta el mecanismo por el cual la patología induce el cambio. Un KCO del 100% puede ser considerado normal en unas circunstancias o patológico bajo otras y, por el momento, el informe automatizado del estudio no puede discriminar. Este artículo describirá los principios de la prueba de DLCO, presentará diferentes modelos de análisis, expondrá ejemplos concretos y ofrecerá pautas para su correcta interpretación. Se considera indispensable efectuar un análisis integrado de la prueba de DLCO en relación con otras pruebas funcionales y con los datos clínicos.

Resumen Introducción. El trauma de tórax tiene alta incidencia y el neumotórax es el hallazgo más frecuente. La literatura es escasa sobre qué hacer con los pacientes asintomáticos y con neumotórax por trauma de tórax penetrante. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar cuáles son los hallazgos de la radiografía de control de los pacientes con trauma de tórax penetrante que no son llevados inicialmente a cirugía, y su utilidad para determinar la necesidad de un tratamiento adicional. Métodos. Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo de cohorte, incluyendo pacientes mayores de 15 años que ingresaron por trauma de tórax penetrante entre enero de 2015 y diciembre de 2017 y que no requirieron manejo quirúrgico inicial. Se analizaron los resultados de la radiografía de tórax, el tiempo de su toma y la conducta decidida según los hallazgos en los pacientes dejados inicialmente bajo observación. Resultados. Se incluyeron 1.554 pacientes, cuya edad promedio fue de 30 años, 92,5 % del sexo masculino y 97% con herida por arma cortopunzante. Se dejaron 361 pacientes bajo observación con radiografía de control, de los cuales 186 (51,5 %) no presentaban alteraciones en su radiografía inicial, 142 tenían neumotórax menor del 30 % y 33 tenían neumotórax mayor del 30 %, hemoneumotórax o hemotórax. Se requirió toracostomía cerrada como conducta final en 78 casos, esternotomía o toracotomía en 2 casos y 281 se dieron de alta. Conclusión. En pacientes asintomáticos con neumotórax pequeño o moderado y sin otras lesiones significativas, podrían ser innecesarios los largos tiempos de observación, las radiografías y la toracostomía cerrada.

Abstract Introduction: Chest trauma has a high incidence, and pneumothorax is the most frequent finding. The literature is limited about what to do with asymptomatic patients with pneumothorax due to penetrating chest trauma. The objective of this study was to evaluate the findings of control follow-up chest x-ray in patients with penetrating chest trauma who are not initially taken to surgery and its usefulness in determining the need for additional management. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including patients older than 15 years who were admitted for penetrating chest trauma between January 2015 and December 2017 and who did not require initial surgical management. The results of the chest x-ray, the timing of it and the management according to the findings in the patients initially left under observation were analyzed. Results: 1,554 patients were included; whose average age was 30 years, 92.5% were males and 97% sustained a gunshot wound; 361 patients were left under observation with control x-ray, of which 186 (51,5%) had no findings on their initial radiograph, 142 had pneumothorax less than 30% and 33 had pneumothorax greater than 30%, hemoneumotorax or hemothorax. Closed thoracostomy was required as final management in 78 cases, sternotomy or thoracotomy in 2 cases and discharge in 281. Conclusion: In asymptomatic patients with small or moderate pneumothorax and without other significant injuries, longer observation times, x-rays and closed thoracostomy may be unnecessary.

ABSTRACT In Paraguay the incidence of cervical cancer (CC) is higher than those observed in other countries of the region. The etiological agent associated with CC is human papilloma virus (HPV), essentially oncogenic high-risk types. The objective was to describe epidemiological aspects of genital infection by high-risk human papilloma virus (HR-HPV) in women aged 25 to 64 years who consulted in services of Cervical Pathology of the MSPyBS, from May to December 2013. We used the Cobas 4800 HPV Test (Roche) that allows the individual detection of HPV-16 and HPV-18 and a pool of other HR-HPV including 12 high-risk genotypes. Other HR-HPV were typed by reverse line hybridization (RLB). Among the 495 women included in the study, 72 positive cases (14.5%) of HR-HPV were detected. We identified 19 viral types; the most frequent was HPV-16 (2.1%), followed by HPV-31, 33, 58 and 66; HPV-18 appears in sixth place. This work provides the first data on the implementation of molecular techniques for the detection and typing of HPV as part of the public health system in Paraguay. The predominance of HPV-16 confirms its wide circulation worldwide and, given its greater oncogenic potential, represents an alert to be considered, especially in women over 30 years of age who carry a persistent infection. These data support the importance of the sensible implementation and the appropriate use of the molecular tests currently available for the prevention and control of the CC.

RESUMEN En Paraguay la incidencia de cáncer de cuello uterino (CCU) es superior a las observadas en otros países de la región. El agente etiológico asociado al CCU es el virus papiloma humano (VPH), esencialmente tipos de alto riesgo oncogénicos. El objetivo es describir aspectos epidemiológicos de la infección genital por el virus papiloma humano de alto riesgo (VPH-AR) en mujeres de 25 a 64 años que consultaron en servicios de Patología Cervical del MSPyBS, de mayo a diciembre de 2013. Se utilizó el Cobas 4800 HPV Test (Roche) que permite la detección individual de VPH-16 y VPH-18 y un pool de otros VPH-AR que incluye 12 genotipos de alto riesgo. Los otros VPH-AR fueron tipificados por hibridación reversa en línea (RLB). Entre las 495 mujeres incluidas, se detectaron 72 casos positivos (14,5%) de VPH-AR. Se identificaron 19 tipos virales; siendo el más frecuente VPH-16 (2,1%), seguido del VPH-31, 33, 58 y 66; el VPH-18 aparece en sexto lugar. Este trabajo aporta los primeros datos sobre la implementación de técnicas moleculares para detección y tipificación de VPH como parte del sistema de salud pública de Paraguay. El predominio de VPH-16, confirma su amplia circulación a nivel mundial y dado su mayor potencial oncogénico, representa una alerta a considerar, en especial en las mujeres mayores de 30 años portadoras de una infección persistente. Estos resultados apoyan la importancia de la implementación criteriosa y la utilización apropiada de las pruebas moleculares actualmente disponibles para la prevención y control del CCU.

The floristic diversity of the riparian forest of the Chili River along the riverbed that crosses the city of Arequipa (province and department of Arequipa) in the districts of Alto Selva Alegre, Cayma, Yanahuara, Cercado, Sachaca, Tiabaya and Uchumayo was studied. Forty-five sampling areas were selected where 245 species of flora (Magnoliophyta and Pteridophyta), divided into 177 genera and 66 families, were identified. An alliance and two associations are described as new syntaxonomic units according to the Braun-Blanquet phytosociological school and classified using the TWINSPAN software. The diversity of endemic species occurs in areas of rocky outcrops where the valley is narrower or encased, while the diversity of native species occurs along the entire riverbed. However, the presence of introduced species is higher in the middle part of the portion of the river that crosses the city. The correlation between environmental variables and floristic species with respect to the sampling locations was evaluated using the Canoco 5.0 software. Likewise, a trend assessment in case of flood due to increase in river flow has been carried and how it could affect the riparian forest, as happened in 1989, 1999 and 2012. In reference to conservation, it is suggested to preserve the fluvial and terrestrial ecosystems coexisting in the urban section and to lead to a sustainable development to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants. The different planning and management processes within the Chili river basin require an autonomous authority that could indicate the lines of action, continuous evaluation, monitoring and that include in the programs the active participation of citizens, and conduct and enhance the management and conservation plans of the riparian forest in the medium and long term period

Se estudió la diversidad florística del monte ribereño del río Chili a lo largo del cauce que atraviesa la ciudad de Arequipa (provincia y departamento de Arequipa) en los distritos de Alto Selva Alegre, Cayma, Yanahuara, Cercado, Sachaca, Tiabaya y Uchumayo. Se seleccionaron 45 áreas de muestreo donde se identificaron 245 especies de flora (Magnoliophyta y Pteridophyta) divididas en 177 géneros y 66 familias. Se describe una alianza y dos asociaciones como nuevas unidades sintaxonómicas según la escuela fitosociológica de Braun-Blanquet y clasificadas mediante el software TWINSPAN. La diversidad de especies endémicas se da en zonas de afloramientos rocosos donde el valle es más estrecho o encañonado, mientras que la diversidad de especies nativas se da a lo largo de todo el cauce; sin embargo, la presencia de especies introducidas es más elevada en la parte media del tramo del río que cruza la ciudad. La correlación entre variables ambientales y especies florísticas con respecto a las localidades de muestreo se evaluó mediante el software Canoco 5,0. Asimismo, se ha realizado una evaluación de tendencia en caso de inundación por aumento de caudal del río y cuán afectado podría verse el monte ribereño, como lo ocurrido en los años 1989, 1999 y 2012. En referencia a conservación, se sugiere la preservación de los ecosistemas fluviales y terrestres coexistentes en el tramo urbano y conllevar a un desarrollo sostenible para mejorar la calidad de vida de los habitantes. Los diferentes procesos de planificación y gestión dentro de la cuenca del río Chili requieren de una autoridad autónoma que pueda señalar las líneas de acción, evaluación continua, seguimiento y que incluya en los programas la participación activa de los ciudadanos, y conduzca y perfeccione los planes de gestión y de conservación del monte ribereño a mediano y largo plazo

ABSTRACT We described the karyotypes of five snake taxa from Argentina: Erythrolamprus almadensis, E. ceii, E. poecilogyrus caesius, E. p. schotti and E. p. sublineatus, and also intergrading individuals between the last two subspecies by conventional staining, chromosome bandings and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with 28S ribosomal DNA probes. Erythrolamprus ceii and E. almadensis share a diploid chromosome number of 2n= 28, whereas in E. poecilogyrus intraspecific variations were observed: E. p. caesius has 2n= 28, E. p. schotti and E. p. sublineatus as well as in the intergrading individuals have 2n= 32. In E. almadensis and E. p. caesius, the 2nd and 6th chromosome pairs respectively are heteromorphic by size, morphology and C-banding pattern. These results allow us to suggest that these chromosome pairs might be considered as the ZW sex chromosomes in these species. The present comparative cytogenetic analyzes contributes to the already remarkable karyotypic variability in Erythrolamprus genus and propose a hypothesis about potential mechanisms involved in the chromosome evolution among taxa analyzed. Furthermore, the karyotypic differences observed between E. p. caesius (2n= 28) and E. p. schotti and E. p. sublineatus (2n= 32) might play a causal role in speciation.

ResumenLos afloramientos rocosos aislados se describen como paisajes destacados en biodiversidad debido a la gran variedad de microhabitats, presencia de taxones restringidos y al alto recambio de especies con la matriz circundante. Particularmente los afloramientos rocosos aislados del Paraje Tres Cerros (ARPTC), Corrientes, Argentina, representan un paisaje único en la región, biológicamente fueron poco explorados. Se estudió la comunidad de aves de bosques y pastizales de los ARPTC mediante 136 listas de Mackinnon de diez especies durante la temporada reproductiva y no reproductiva. Se evaluó la diversidad, riqueza estimada y completitud de inventarios, abundancia de gremios tróficos y fenología de las especies. Se comparó estos atributos entre los bosques y pastizales. Se registraron 107 especies donde el bosque es 1.3 veces más diverso que el pastizal. La completitud de inventarios varió de 83 a 90 % en el pastizal y de 88 a 99 % en el bosque. Los hábitats se complementaron en un 62 % indicando una elevada ocurrencia de especies exclusivas. Las aves insectívoras fueron abundantes en ambos ambientes, mientras que las frugívoras en bosques y las granívoras en pastizales. Ambos hábitats son significativamente más ricos en especies en la estación reproductiva por la llegada de los migrantes estivales. Los resultados concuerdan con los patrones generales conocidos para las comunidades de aves y con otros específicos para las comunidades de aves de afloramientos rocosos. El presente estudio resalta la importancia de los afloramientos rocosos aislados de Paraje Tres Cerros para la protección de la biodiversidad de aves a nivel local y regional y representa una herramienta de manejo para la conservación de estos ecosistemas.

AbstractIsolated rocky outcrops can act as patch habitats that host great biodiversity through the diversity of microhabitats, presence of restricted taxa and the high turnover of species in the patch matrix. The isolated rocky outcrops of Paraje Tres Cerros (ARPTC), Corrientes, Argentina, are a unique landscape in the region and biologically little explored. We conducted a study to describe for the first time the bird community of the forest and grassland of the ARPTC, using 136 lists following the ten species Mackinnon method from the breeding and non-breeding seasons. We evaluated the diversity, trophic guilds and phenology of the species, and compared attributes of grassland and forest communities. The total species richness was 107, with the forest being 1.3 times more diverse than the grassland. Completeness of inventories ranged from 83-90 % in the grassland and 88 to 99 % in the forest. The habitat complementarity was 62 %, indicating the presence of several species exclusive of forest and grassland habitats. The trophic structure of communities showed a good representation of insectivorous birds in both habitats. Frugivorous birds were more frequent in the forest and granivorous birds were more frequent in the grasslands. Due to the arrival of migrant species, both habitats had significantly higher richness in the breeding season than in the non-breeding season. Our results showed similar general aspects and patterns for bird communities and with specific studies for bird communities of rocky outcrops. The present study highlights the importance of the isolated rocky outcrops of Paraje Tres Cerros for the protection of local and regional bird biodiversity and represents a benchmark for the management and the protection of these ecosystems.

The purpose of this study is to inquire into the ethical principles that should be applied to the scientific code for research. To this end a qualitative analysis was conducted, through an interpretive action model, of the perception of six Spanish university professors from varying specializations within the social sciences field. A discussion group was conducted as an instrument for further investigation into this focus of study. Results indicate how professors with less experience and lower academic rank perceive more difficulties when adapting to the demands of evaluating agencies. Professors with higher academic rank recognize the impossibility of publishing varied, high-quality scientific material in the short term. The articles ends by proposing the need to review professor accreditation models, considering both contributions made by researchers and their multidisciplinary projection.

Esta investigación tiene el propósito de indagar acerca de los principios éticos que deben regir en el código científico de las investigaciones. Para lograrlo se lleva a cabo un análisis cualitativo, mediante el modelo de actuación interpretativo, sobre la percepción de seis profesores universitarios españoles pertenecientes al campo de las ciencias sociales (CCSS) de diferentes ámbitos de especialidad. Se llevó a cabo un grupo de discusión como instrumento para profundizar en el eje de estudio. Los resultados muestran cómo los docentes de menor experiencia y rango académico perciben más dificultades a la hora adecuarse a las exigencias de las agencias evaluadoras. Por su parte, los docentes de mayor rango académico reconocen la imposibilidad de publicar material científico variado y de calidad a corto plazo. Se concluye con la necesidad de revisar los modelos de acreditación docente, y se valoran tanto las contribuciones realizadas como la proyección multidisciplinar del investigador.

Resumen Antecedentes: durante el desarrollo de cualquier organismo, tienen lugar una serie de eventos en un contexto espacial y temporal preciso. Comúnmente, ciertos procesos ontogenéticos son congruentes con la adecuada culminación de eventos previos. Objetivo: identificar posibles eventos heterocrónicos que pueden relacionarse con los patrones de desarrollo altriciales y precoces. Métodos: se analizó la ontogenia de tres especies de aves con dos modelos de desarrollo diferentes: Columba livia (semialtricial 2), Coturnix coturnix y Gallus gallus domesticus (precocial 2). Se comparó el inicio y la finalización de trece eventos morfogenéticos, desde las 16 h de incubación hasta el momento de la eclosión. Resultados: si bien no se observaron diferencias en la secuencia de eventos del desarrollo, en la especie altricial los eventos de maduración se iniciaron antes que en las especies precoces. La aceleración de eventos ontogenéticos en C. livia y C. coturnix explicaría cómo estas especies alcanzan un grado de desarrollo morfológico semejante al de G. gallus domesticus pero en un periodo de incubación menor. Conclusión: los resultados de este trabajo aportan información sobre eventos heterocrónicos en las etapas temprana del desarrollo de las aves, no consideradas en la literatura de la especialidad.

Summary Background: a series of events take place in a precise spatial and temporal context during the development of any organism. Typically, certain ontogenetic processes are consistent with the proper completion of previous events. Objective: to identify possible heterochronic events that may relate to altricial and precocious development patterns. Methods: we analyzed the ontogeny of three species of birds with two different development models: Columba livia (semialtricial 2), Coturnix coturnix, and Gallus gallus domesticus (precocial 2). The starts and endings of thirteen morphological events were compared, from hour 16 of incubation to the time of hatching. Results: while no differences in the sequence of developmental events were found, the events of the maturation stage in the altricial kind started earlier compared to the precocial species. Ontogenetic acceleration events in C. livia and C. coturnix explain how these species reach a level of morphological development similar to that of G. gallus domesticus, but with shorter incubation period. Conclusion: the results provide information not considered in the literature of the specialty about heterochronic events in early developmental stages of poultry.

Resumo Antecedentes: durante o desenvolvimento de qualquer organismo ocorrem uma série de eventos num contexto espacial e temporal preciso. Comumente, certos processos ontogênicos são consistentes com a conclusão correta de eventos anteriores. Objetivo: identificar possíveis eventos heterocrônicos que podem estar relacionados a padrões de desenvolvimento altriciais e precoces. Métodos: Foi analisada a ontogenia de três espécies de aves com dois modelos diferentes de desenvolvimento: Columba livia (semialtricial 2), Coturnix coturnix e Gallus gallus domesticus (precoce 2). Foram comparados o início e o fim de treze eventos morfogenéticos, a partir das 16 h de incubação até a eclosão. Resultados: embora não foram observadas diferenças na sequência de eventos do desenvolvimento, na espécie altricial os eventos de maturação iniciaram-se mais cedo do que nas espécies precoces. A aceleração de eventos ontogênicos em C. coturnix C. livia pode explicar como essas espécies atingem um grau de desenvolvimento morfológico semelhante ao G. gallus domesticus em um período de incubação mais curto. Conclusão: os resultados deste estudo fornecem informação sobre eventos heterocrônicos nas fases iniciais do desenvolvimento das aves, não são considerados na literatura da especialidade.
