ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: There is a lack of studies evaluating the oral health of traditional indigenous communities in Brazil. OBJECTIVES: Thus, the objective of this study was to describe the oral health characteristics of the indigenous Fulni-ô ethnic group in Northeast Brazil. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional observational investigation was conducted within the Project on Atherosclerosis among Indigenous Populations. METHODS: This study included participants of both sexes from the Fulni-ô ethnic group. The participants included in this investigation underwent a comprehensive oral health evaluation by a registered and experienced dentist to assess oral health and identify potentially malignant oral lesions. Participants with suspicious lesions were referred for biopsy. Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney, and Student’s t-tests were used, and measures of central tendency and dispersion were described. Statistical significance was 5%. RESULTS: A total of 104 individuals were included in this study. The prevalence of the use of tobacco derivatives was 94.0%, with similarities between sexes. The prevalence of oral changes in this study population was 84.4%. Fifty-one individuals who underwent oral reassessment were referred for oral lesion biopsy. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of oral alterations in the Fulni-ô population. Histopathological analyses indicated the presence of mild oral epithelial dysplasia in five cases.

Abstract Objectives: To review and provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of otosclerosis. Methods: Task force members were educated on knowledge synthesis methods, including electronic database search, review and selection of relevant citations, and critical appraisal of selected studies. Articles written in English or Portuguese on otosclerosis were eligible for inclusion. The American College of Physicians’ guideline grading system and the American Thyroid Association’s guideline criteria were used for critical appraisal of evidence and recommendations for therapeutic interventions. Results: The topics were divided into 2 parts: 1) Diagnosis – audiologic and radiologic; 2) Treatment – hearing AIDS, pharmacological therapy, stapes surgery, and implantable devices - bone-anchored devices, active middle ear implants, and Cochlear Implants (CI). Conclusions: The pathophysiology of otosclerosis has not yet been fully elucidated, but environmental factors and unidentified genes are likely to play a significant role in it. Women with otosclerosis are not at increased risk of worsening clinical condition due to the use of contraceptives or during pregnancy. Drug treatment has shown little benefit. If the patient does not want to undergo stapedotomy, the use of hearing aids is well indicated. Implantable systems should be indicated only in rare cases, and the CI should be indicated in cases of profound deafness.

RESUMO Analisaram-se, na percepção de profissionais da Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS), as dificuldades no cuidado em Saúde Mental relacionadas ao uso de Substâncias Psicoativas (SPA), à luz de reflexões sobre os tensionamentos presentes na saúde pública no que se refere ao seu uso. Foi conduzido estudo exploratório qualitativo em 11 municípios da Macrorregião de Saúde Oeste do estado de Minas Gerais, com entrevistas semiestruturadas e Grupos Focais com 145 profissionais da APS. O material foi analisado a partir do referencial de Análise de Conteúdo. As principais dificuldades identificadas estavam relacionadas à organização e à gestão do trabalho em saúde, ao estigma sobre usuários com demandas relacionadas ao uso de SPA, à falta de reflexões e práticas em saúde que considerem a realidade dos usuários em uso de SPA, à ‘cultura da medicação’ e à desarticulação da Rede de Atenção Psicossocial. É fundamental o desenvolvimento de políticas e práticas que permitam aos trabalhadores e às estruturas de saúde uma maior reflexão acerca da relação entre o uso de SPA e as possibilidades de lidar com o sofrimento, expresso de diferentes formas pelos usuários dos serviços de saúde.

The most relevant difficulties were related to health work organization and management, the stigma against users with demands related do the use of PS, the lack of reflections health practices which consider the user’s reality, the ‘medicine culture’ and a disjointed Psychosocial Attention Network. It is fundamental to develop policies and practices that allow workers and health structures to reflect more on the relationship between PS use and possibilities to cope with suffering, expressed in different ways by healthcare users.

Abstract Objectives: The aim of this study is to develop and validate a novel clinical report form in the format of a structured interview to enable the characterization of the Portuguese population of the Baixo Vouga region with different subtypes of nodular thyroid pathologies (NTyPs). Materials and methods: A structured interview was developed and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first structured interview built and validated for that purpose in Portugal. Results: This structured interview enables the identification of possible correlations between each subtype of nodular lesions and sociodemographic data, consumption habits and lifestyle, endocrine history, and family predisposition. Conclusion: The novel structured interview will simultaneously, enable a detailed characterization of the group of patients with nodular thyroid lesions and will support future metabolomic studies.

Abstract The current scenario of neoliberal political maneuvers in Brazil brought several legislative changes regarding health care policies which alter many services’ organizational forms and funding. These changes also come through as precarious work and threaten advances and accomplishments related to the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform and mental health care. This study aimed to identify and analyse difficulties regarding the construction of a mental health (MH) policy in Primary Health Care (PHC) according to professionals working at 11 teams of the Family Health Support Center (NASF). We developed a qualitative study through 11 semi-structured interviews conducted with 11 MH workers in PHC and explored the results using content analysis. The identified difficulties were precarious forms of employment; high professional turnover; insufficient working hours; low wages; working hours concentrated in care activities; lack of integration and communication among services and workers and disarticulation of the psychosocial attention network (RAPS). Matrix support was not present and there were no Permanent Health Education policies in the municipalities studied. Nevertheless, the NASF contributed to improve mental healthcare. The conclusion is that ongoing changes impose challenges to sustain mental health accomplishments and consolidation of mental healthcare policies at PHC at the studied municipalities.Resumo: No atual cenário de manobras neoliberais no país, mudanças nas Políticas de Atenção em Saúde alteram formas de organização e financiamento dos serviços, desdobram-se em formas precarizadas de trabalho e ameaçam conquistas da Reforma Psiquiátrica e Atenção Psicossocial. Realizou-se estudo qualitativo, a partir de entrevistas com 11 profissionais de SM dos NASF, e estas foram analisadas considerando-se o referencial da Análise de Conteúdo. As dificuldades identificadas foram: formas precárias de contratação; alta rotatividade; carga horária insuficiente; baixa remuneração; concentração da carga horária em atividades de assistência; falta de compartilhamento e integração de serviços e profissionais; desarticulação da Rede de Atenção Psicossocial (RAPS). O Apoio Matricial não estava incorporado e não havia políticas de Educação Permanente em Saúde (EPS) no conjunto dos municípios estudados. No entanto, os NASF contribuíam para melhorar o cuidado em SM. Conclui-se que as mudanças em curso impõem desafios para a sustentação de conquistas em SM e consolidação da política de SM na ABS dos municípios estudados.

ABSTRACT The present study related to boxing athletes' mental toughness and physical fitness performances with Big Five Factors. For this, the sample was composed of eleven recreational boxers who competed at the state level and were regularly training (technical and tactical) 4 times a week during the evaluation period. The 44-item Big Five Inventory (BFI) measures the Big Five dimensions of Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Openness, and Extraversion and the 14-item Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ) were applied with Strength, Power, and Endurance Tests, Pearson and Spearman's correlations were used to verify the association between BFI, physical and mental tests, respectively, p≤.05. Our results demonstrated that significant and strong correlation between agreeableness factor and sit-ups test, with 40.85±12.36 freq./min (r=.72, p=.02) and, in SMTQ, a strong correlation between Neuroticism and Control [10(9;12) score, r=.76, p≤0.01], Constancy [10(9;12) score, r=.84, p≤0.01] and Total SMQT [37(34;37) score, r=.84, p≤0.01]. In conclusion, these results suggest that Neuroticism factors are associated with mental toughness, while the agreeableness factor is related to muscular endurance capability. Mental toughness and endurance results are associated with boxers' personalities whose drive motivates them relentlessly towards success and promotes thriving in boxing training environments or during championships.

RESUMO O presente estudo relacionou a resistência mental e o desempenho da aptidão física de atletas de boxe com os cinco grandes fatores. Para isso, compuseram o presente estudo onze boxeadores recreativos que competiram em nível estadual e estavam treinando regularmente (técnico e tático) 4 vezes por semana durante o período de avaliação. O Big Five Inventory (BFI) de 44 itens mede as dimensões de Conscienciosidade, Amabilidade, Neuroticismo, Abertura e Extroversão e o Questionário de Resistência Mental Esportiva (SMTQ) de 14 itens foram aplicados com Testes de Força, Potência e Resistência, Pearson e as correlações de Spearman foram utilizadas para verificar a associação entre IMC, testes físicos e mentais, respectivamente, p≤0.05. Nossos resultados demonstraram correlação significativa e forte entre o fator de amabilidade e o teste de abdominais, com 40,9±12,4 freq./min (r=0,72, p=0,02) e, no SMTQ, uma forte correlação entre Neuroticismo e Controle [10 (9;12) pontuação, r=0.76, p≤0,01], Constância [10(9;12) pontuação, r=0.84, p≤0,001] e total SMQT [37(34;37) pontuação, r= 0.84, p≤0,001]. Em conclusão, esses resultados sugerem que os fatores de neuroticismo estão associados à resistência mental, enquanto o fator de amabilidade está associado à capacidade de resistência muscular. Os resultados de resistência mental e resistência estão associados à personalidade dos boxeadores, cuja motivação os impulsiona implacavelmente para o sucesso e promove o sucesso em ambientes de treinamento de boxe ou durante campeonatos.

ABSTRACT Background: The World Health Organization recommends a market-ready, urine-based point-of-care diagnostic test for circulating cathodic antigens (CCA) to determine the prevalence of S. mansoni. This study evaluated the performance of the URINE CCA (SCHISTO) ECO TESTE® (POC-ECO), which is currently available in Brazil. Methods: Residents from eight sites with different prevalence estimates provided one urine sample for POC-ECO and one stool sample for Kato-Katz (KK) and Helmintex® (HTX) testing as an egg-detecting reference for infection status. Results: None of the study sites had significantly higher POC-ECO accuracy than KK. Conclusions: POC-ECO is not currently recommended in Brazilian schistosomiasis elimination programs.

Abstract The demands for dental materials continue to grow, driven by the desire to reach a better performance than currently achieved by the available materials. In the dental restorative ceramic field, the structures evolved from the metal-ceramic systems to highly translucent multilayered zirconia, aiming not only for tailored mechanical properties but also for the aesthetics to mimic natural teeth. Ceramics are widely used in prosthetic dentistry due to their attractive clinical properties, including high strength, biocompatibility, chemical stability, and a good combination of optical properties. Metal-ceramics type has always been the golden standard of dental reconstruction. However, this system lacks aesthetic aspects. For this reason, efforts are made to develop materials that met both the mechanical features necessary for the safe performance of the restoration as well as the aesthetic aspects, aiming for a beautiful smile. In this field, glass and high-strength core ceramics have been highly investigated for applications in dental restoration due to their excellent combination of mechanical properties and translucency. However, since these are recent materials when compared with the metal-ceramic system, many studies are still required to guarantee the quality and longevity of these systems. Therefore, a background on available dental materials properties is a starting point to provoke a discussion on the development of potential alternatives to rehabilitate lost hard and soft tissue structures with ceramic-based tooth and implant-supported reconstructions. This review aims to bring the most recent materials research of the two major categories of ceramic restorations: ceramic-metal system and all-ceramic restorations. The practical aspects are herein presented regarding the evolution and development of materials, technologies applications, strength, color, and aesthetics. A trend was observed to use high-strength core ceramics type due to their ability to be manufactured by CAD/CAM technology. In addition, the impacts of COVID-19 on the market of dental restorative ceramics are presented.

ABSTRACT Sweet corn is susceptible to the attack of various pathogens that affect its metabolism and compromise its quality and production. This study aimed to identify the causal agent of stem rot in sweet corn plants under greenhouse conditions. The identity of the pathogenic isolate was confirmed by sequencing of internal transcribed spacer (ITS1/ITS4), beta-tubulin (BT2A/BT2B), calmodulin (CL1/CL2) and translation elongation factor 1α (TEF1). The morphological and sequencing characteristics showed that Fusarium sacchari, which belongs to the Fusarium fujikuroi complex, is directly associated with the symptoms observed in the field. This fungal isolate has never been associated with diseases in Zea mays (saccharata group) in Brazil; therefore, this is the first report of the fungus infecting sweet corn in a cultivated area.

RESUMO O milho doce está sujeito ao ataque de vários patógenos que afetam o seu metabolismo e comprometem a sua qualidade e produção. Objetivou-se identificar o agente causal da podridão do colmo em plantas de milho doce, em casa-de-vegetação. A identidade do isolado patogênico foi confirmada pelo sequenciamento do espaço interno transcrito (ITS1/ITS4), beta-tubulina (BT2A/BT2B), calmodulina (CL1/CL2) e fator de elongação da tradução 1α (TEF1). As características morfológicas e de sequenciamento revelaram que Fusarium sacchari, pertencente ao complexo Fusarium fujikuroi, está diretamente associado aos sintomas observados em campo. Esse isolado fúngico nunca foi associado a doenças em Zea mays (grupo saccharata) no Brasil; portanto, este é o primeiro relato do fungo infectando milho doce em área de cultivo.

Abstract Scientific evidence about genetic and molecular changes in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) among smokers and non-smokers is inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the effects of tobacco on the DNA of individuals with OSCC based on protein mutations. Electronic searches were conducted on PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, and Scopus to identify observational studies published up to January/2022. The Joanna Briggs Institute tool was used for the critical appraisal of studies. The certainty of the evidence was evaluated. Twenty-three studies assessing 4,060 individuals (2,967 smokers vs. 1,093 non-smokers) were included in this review. Fifteen groups of proteins/genes were investigated. Analysis of the quality of articles revealed low risk of bias in most studies. The certainty of the evidence was very low. The meta-analysis confirmed no significant difference between smokers and non-smokers with respect to damage to GSTM1 (OR: 0.60; 95%CI: 0.30–1.18), GSTT1 (OR: 1.18; 95%CI:0.49–2.83), hydrolase proteins (Ku70 and Ku80) (OR: 0.74; 95%CI: 0.18–3.05), and transferase proteins (GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTM3) (OR: 0.74; 95%CI: 0.47–1.18). Most of the studies included showed that smokers are more likely to exhibit genetic instability. However, the meta-analysis revealed that smokers do not necessarily have more genetic alterations in the DNA than non-smokers.

Abstract: Participation in cities’ sociocultural life encompasses the practices related to the museum-leisure-tourism triad. This article addresses the spontaneous public that visits science museums in Rio de Janeiro and analyzes aspects of female attendance in these places. This research stems from visitors’ studies carried out in science museums and seeks to deepen the discussions from the perspective of leisure. Data analyzed here were obtained in the 2017 edition of the Profile-Opinion questionnaire of the Observatory of Science and Technology Museums and Centers Ten science museums participated, and a probabilistic sampling was performed. The data from 4,606 respondents were systematized and treated statistically. The results express the potential for attractiveness of science museums, in which the prevalence of the “citizen tourist”, who lives and enjoys the city, compared to the “standard tourist” was observed. The results revealed the predominance of female visitors in the science museums investigated, accompanied mainly by friends. However, it was not possible to affirm their protagonism in defining the family’s cultural agenda. It was noted the expansion of the role of science museums as places for leisure and learning and the persistence of gaps in public policies dedicated to make these institutions more inclusive and to consolidate the habit of visiting museums.

Resumem: La participación en la vida sociocultural de las ciudades la tríada museo-ocio-turismo. Este artículo se dirige al público espontáneo que visita los museos de ciencia de Río de Janeiro e analiza aspectos de la participación femenina en esos lugares. La investigación se ancla en estudios de público realizados en espacios museísticos, además de buscar profundizar las discusiones desde la perspectiva del ocio. Los datos se obtuvieron a través del cuestionario Perfil-Opinión del Observatorio de Museos y Centros de Ciencia y Tecnología, en la última edición celebrada en 2017. Participaron diez museos de ciencias, e se realizó un muestreo probabilístico. Los datos relativos a los 4.606 encuestados fueron sistematizados y tratados estadísticamente. Los análisis expresan el potencial de atractivo de los espacios museísticos, en los que se observó el predominio del “turista ciudadano” que vive y disfruta de la ciudad, frente al “turista estándar”. El predominio de la presencia femenina en los museos de ciencia investigados, acompañada principalmente de amiga/os, fue encontrado. Sin embargo, no es posible afirmar su protagonismo en la definición de la agenda cultural. Se nota la ampliación del papel de estas instituciones como espacios de ocio y aprendizaje y la persistencia de vacíos en las políticas públicas para hacer estos espacios más inclusivos y consolidar el hábito de visitar museos.

Resumo: A participação na vida sociocultural nas cidades abrange as práticas da tríade museus-lazer-turismo. Esse artigo aborda o público espontâneo que visita museus de ciência no Rio de Janeiro e analisa aspectos da participação das mulheres nesses locais. A pesquisa está ancorada nos estudos de públicos realizados nos espaços museológicos, bem como procura adensar as discussões a partir da perspectiva do lazer. Os dados foram obtidos por meio do questionário de Perfil-Opinião do Observatório de Museus e Centros de Ciência e Tecnologia, na última edição realizada em 2017. Participaram dez museus de ciência, e foi realizada uma amostragem probabilística. Os dados relativos aos 4.606 respondentes foram sistematizados e tratados estatisticamente. Os resultados expressam o potencial de atratividade dos espaços museais, nos quais foi observada a prevalência do “turista cidadão”, que mora e usufrui da cidade, frente ao “turista padrão”. A predominância da presença de mulheres nos museus de ciência investigados, acompanhada principalmente por amigos/as, foi constatada. No entanto, não é possível afirmar o seu protagonismo na definição da agenda cultural. Nota-se a ampliação do papel dessas instituições como espaços de lazer e aprendizado e a permanência de lacunas de políticas públicas para tornar esses espaços mais inclusivos e consolidar o hábito de visita a museus.

Abstract: Introduction: Traditional communities are groups of socially organized individuals with common economic, socio-environmental, and cultural behaviors. Brazil’s indigenous communities are a prime example of these groups, suffering the impact of urbanization, the growth of chronic diseases, epidemics, and increased food insecurity. Experience report: To describe the health team’s experiences in the use of a data management tool for care in an indigenous community in northeastern Brazil. Methodology: This is an experience report on the use of a digital tool to assist actions in a traditional community. The health team was divided into community health agents and medical students. Discussion: The description of the experiences and analysis of the narratives resulted in identifying 258 citations, classified into 12 categories related to the study scope. Of these, issues related to benefits of the tool were the most commonly mentioned (43.41%), where the subgroups addressed different reflections. The second most cited category referred to the tool’s limitations (15.11%), with the need for an internet connection being the critical point. This research, therefore, shows the tool’s advantages in health care but also explains weaknesses inherent to its use, raising important issues of this experience and stimulating similar practices. Conclusion: This experience report, as a scientific method, addresses essential experienced issues related to the practical applicability of a digital tool in an indigenous community. Although it is undeniable that there are obvious points of weakness, these did not compromise the positive result of the experience, and care was improved.

Resumo: Introdução: As comunidades tradicionais são grupos de indivíduos socialmente organizados que partilham comportamentos econômicos, socioambientais e culturais comuns. Entre elas, destacam-se as comunidades indígenas no Brasil, que vêm sofrendo o impacto da urbanização, do crescimento de doenças crônicas e epidemias e do aumento da insegurança alimentar. Relato de experiência: Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever as experiências da equipe de saúde, quanto ao uso de uma ferramenta de gestão de dados na assistência, em uma comunidade indígena no Nordeste brasileiro. Trata-se de um relato de experiência do uso de uma ferramenta digital nas ações assistenciais em uma comunidade tradicional. A equipe de saúde foi dividida em dois grupos: agentes comunitários de saúde e estudantes de Medicina. Discussão: A descrição das experiências e a análise das narrativas resultaram na identificação de 258 citações, que foram classificadas em 12 categorias, relacionadas ao objeto de estudo. Dentre estas, as questões ligadas aos benefícios da ferramenta foram as mais mencionadas (43,41%), em que os subgrupos abordaram diferentes reflexões. A segunda categoria mais citada se referia às limitações da ferramenta (15,11%), sendo a necessidade do sinal de internet o ponto crítico. Ou seja, esta pesquisa mostra vantagens da ferramenta na atenção à saúde, mas também explicita fragilidades inerentes ao seu uso, de modo a trazer questões importantes dessa vivência e estimular práticas semelhantes. Conclusão: Esse relato de experiência, como método científico, traz importantes questões vivenciadas, relacionadas à aplicabilidade prática de uma ferramenta digital em uma comunidade indígena. Apesar de ser inegável que há pontos de fragilidade evidentes, eles não comprometeram o resultado afirmativo da vivência, melhorando a assistência.
