ABSTRACT The Northeast region of Brazil is the primary producer of yellow passion fruit. In recent years, water scarcity has led passion fruit growers to use highly saline water for cultivation. Therefore, implementing technologies that alleviate the negative effects of salt stress on plants is a promising approach, particularly in semi-arid conditions. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of organomineral fertilizers in mitigating salt stress effects on chlorophyll-a fluorescence and gas exchange in ‘Guinezinho’ yellow passion fruit seedlings. The treatments were arranged in randomized blocks with four replicates and four seedlings per plot, following a 2 × 3 factorial design. The factors considered were irrigation using water with low (0.18 dS m-1) and high (4.0 dS m-1) electrical conductivity and three liquid organomineral attenuators (Codasal™, Aminoagro Raiz™, and a mixture of Codasal™ + Aminoagro Raiz™ at a 1:1 v/v ratio), applied through fertigation. Irrigation with water containing 4.0 dS m-1 electrical conductivity, combined with liquid fertilizers, resulted in increased substrate salinity, and reduced stomatal conductance in yellow passion fruit seedlings, particularly when Codasal™ was applied. Application of Codasal™ alone or in combination with Aminoagro Raiz™ significantly enhanced variable fluorescence, quantum efficiency of PSII, CO2 assimilation rate, and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency in ‘Guinezinho’ yellow passion fruit seedlings.

RESUMO O Nordeste é a principal região produtora de frutos de maracujazeiro-amarelo no Brasil, que devido à escassez hídrica ocorrida nos últimos anos, os passifloricultores utilizam água de elevada concentração de sais para exploração da cultura. Dessa forma, o emprego de tecnologias que possibilite a atenuação do estresse salino às plantas é uma estratégia promissora nas condições de semiárido. Objetivou-se com o trabalho avaliar a ação de fertilizantes organominerais como atenuador do estresse salino sobre a fluorescência da clorofila a e trocas gasosas de mudas maracujazeiro-amarelo acesso ‘Guinezinho’. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e quatro mudas por parcela, empregando o esquema fatorial 2 × 3, referente às irrigação com água de baixa (0,18 dS m-1) e alta (4,00 dS m-1) condutividade elétrica e três atenuadores organomineral líquidos (Codasal®, Aminoagro Raiz® e mistura de Codasal® + Aminoagro Raiz® - proporção de 1/1 v/v), via fertirrigação. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 associado com fertilizantes líquidos aumentam a salinidade do substrato e reduz a condutância estomática das mudas de maracujazeiro-amarelo, principalmente, com aplicação de Codasal®. A aplicação individual ou associado de Codasal® com Aminoagro Raiz® promove aumentos na fluorescência variável, eficiência quântica do PSII, taxa de assimilação de CO2 e eficiência instantânea de carboxilação em mudas de maracujazeiro-amarelo, acesso “Guinezinho”.

Investigating specialized plant metabolites, traditionally referred to as ‘secondary metabolites’ present in leaf extracts of cashew trees (Anacardium occidentale) resistant and susceptible to anthracnose disease was carried out using metabolomics combined with chemometric tools. We used clones of dwarf-cashew with the following variations of characteristics: resistant and healthy (CCP 76, BRS 226, BRS 189), susceptible and healthy (BRS 265), and another clone also susceptible but affected by the disease (BRS 265). The UPLC-QTOF-MSE (ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry) analysis of the leaves of Anacardium clones allowed us to annotate a total of 39 metabolites. The multiple orthogonal partial discriminant analysis of the least-squares (OPLS-DA) allowed twelve metabolites to be potential biomarkers of differentiation among the clones studied. Namely, the triene-(17:3)-anacardic acid found on CCP 76 and BRS 189 clones, respectively, is the main candidate for biomarker of resistance. While catechin, B-type procyanidin isomers, and procyanidin dimer monogallate identified in BRS 265 are significant potential biomarkers of susceptibility.

ABSTRACT: Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is one of the most challenging respiratory pathogens involved with swine pneumonia worldwide, responsible for a chronic infection with high morbidity, which predisposes secondary bacterial infections in growing and finishing pigs. Advances in diagnostic techniques allowed identification of genetic characteristics associated with high antigenic and proteomic variability among bacterial strains. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity of M. hyopneumoniae strains in lungs with pneumonic lesions obtained from 52 pig farms located in Minas Gerais, one of the largest swine production states in Brazil. Genotyping was performed using multilocus variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA), targeting two loci encoding P97 and P146 adhesins VNTR. The results showed that this agent is widely disseminated in pig farms and there is a high polymorphism of M. hyopneumoniae variants circulating in the state of Minas Gerais. Different M. hyopneumoniae genotypes are randomly distributed in several regions of the state, with no specific geographic population structure pattern. M. hyopneumoniae association with viral agents was sporadic (3.17% with Influenza A and 1.9% with PCV2).

RESUMO: Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae é um dos patógenos respiratórios mais desafiadores envolvidos com pneumonia suína em todo o mundo. É responsável por uma infecção crônica de alta morbidade, que predispõe a infecções bacterianas secundárias nas fases de crescimento e terminação. Avanços nas técnicas diagnósticas permitiram a identificação de características genéticas do agente, associadas à alta variabilidade antigênica e proteômica entre cepas. Este estudo teve como objetivo examinar a ocorrência e diversidade genética de cepas de M. hyopneumoniae em pulmões com lesões pneumônicas em 52 granjas de suínos no estado de Minas Gerais, um dos maiores estados produtores de suínos do Brasil. A genotipagem foi realizada utilizando a técnica de “multilocus variable number of tandem repeat analysis” (VTNR/MLVA), usando dois loci que codificam VNTR das adesinas P97 e P146. Os resultados mostraram que esse agente está amplamente disseminado em granjas de suínos e que existe alto polimorfismo das variantes de M. hyopneumoniae circulando no estado de Minas Gerais. Diferentes genótipos de M. hyopneumoniae estão distribuídos aleatoriamente em várias regiões do estado, sem um padrão de estrutura populacional e geográfica específico. Associação de M. hyopneumoniae e agentes virais foi esporádica (3,17% com Influenza A e 1,9% com PCV2).

Abstract Several studies have been conducted evaluating the management of fertilizers as strategies to mitigate the deleterious effects of salt stress, so the objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of ‘Crioula’ guava seedlings under irrigation with water of different salinity levels and fertilized with combinations of nitrogen and potassium. The experiment was performed in a protected (screened) environment using a randomized block design and analyzed in a 5 × 4 factorial scheme, with four replicates, with the plot formed by two plants. The treatments were formed from the combination of the factor electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw 0.3, 1.1, 1.9, 2.7 and 3.5 dS m-1), with the factor combinations (C) of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K2O) doses, being C1 = 70% N + 50% K2O, C2 = 100% N + 75% K2O, C3= 130% N + 100% K2O and C4= 160% N + 125% K2O. The recommended dose of 100% N and K, respectively, was 541.1 mg N dm-3 soil and 798.6 mg K dm-3 soil. The combinations of N and K fertilization corresponding to 70% N + 50% K2O and 100% N + 75% K2O of the recommended doses promoted greater growth of ‘Crioula’ guava seedlings. Water with ECw of 2.1 dS m-1 promotes the formation of quality ‘Crioula’ guava seedlings.

Resumo Diversos estudos vêm sendo desenvolvido avaliando o manejo de adubos como estratégias para mitigar os efeitos deletérios do estresse salino, neste sentido, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a qualidade de mudas de goiabeira Crioula sob irrigação com águas de diferentes níveis salinos e adubadas com combinações de nitrogênio e potássio. O experimento foi conduzido em ambiente protegido (telado) utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados e analisados em esquema fatorial 5 × 4, com quatro repetições, com a parcela formada por duas plantas. Os tratamentos foram formados pela combinação do fator condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (CEa), com valores de 0,3; 1,1; 1,9; 2,7 e 3,5 dS m-1; e o fator combinações (C) de doses de nitrogênio (N) e potássio (K2O), sendo C1 = 70% N + 50% K2O; C2 = 100% N + 75% K2O; C3= 130% N + 100% K2O e C4= 160% N + 125% K2O. A dose recomendada de 100% de N e K, respectivamente, foi de 541,1 e 798,6 mg de K dm-3 de solo. As combinações de adubação nitrogenada e potássica de 70% N + 50% K2O e 100% N + 75% K2O, em relação às doses recomendadas, resultaram em um maior crescimento de mudas de goiabeira Crioula. Água com CEa média de 2,1 dS m-1 foi capaz de promove a formação de mudas de qualidade de goiabeira Crioula.

Abstract Foodborne diseases are common illnesses caused by the consumption of food contaminated with microorganisms, such as viruses, fungi, bacteria, and protozoa. Every year, 600 million people become ill and 420,000 people die as a result of consuming contaminated food. Therefore, food safety is an important issue. In this study, samples of homemade spiced mayonnaise and self-serve acai sold in the city of Araguaína, Tocantins, Brazil were analyzed for microbiological contaminants. Acai was collected from 10 stores, one sample from each store, and tested for mold, yeast, and coliforms, as well as coliform identification and total and thermotolerant coliform counts. Mayonnaise was collected from 20 snack bars, one sample from each. These samples were inoculated on MacConkey and Salmonella Shigella agar plates, and the plates were analyzed for growth. Salmonella spp. were detected in some Mayonnaise samples, and coliforms were detected in all acai samples; 60% of samples had thermotolerant coliforms, and only 40% were within the limits established by ANVISA. The collected samples of mayonnaise and acai were contaminated with molds and yeasts above the established limit of 103 CFU/g. Thus, the analyzed mayonnaise and acai samples were contaminated and unfit for consumption, demonstrating the importance of hygienic-sanitary measures in food handling.

Resumo As doenças transmitidas por alimentos são doenças comuns causadas pelo consumo de alimentos contaminados com microrganismos, como vírus, fungos, bactérias e protozoários. Todos os anos, 600 milhões de pessoas ficam doentes e 420.000 pessoas morrem como resultado do consumo de alimentos contaminados. Portanto, a segurança alimentar é uma questão importante. Neste estudo, amostras de maionese temperada caseira e açaí self-service vendidas na cidade de Araguaína, Tocantins, Brasil foram analisadas quanto a contaminantes microbiológicos. O açaí foi coletado em 10 lojas, uma amostra de cada loja, e testado para mofo, levedura e coliformes, bem como identificação de coliformes e contagem de coliformes totais e termotolerantes. A maionese foi coletada de 20 lanchonetes, sendo uma amostra de cada. Essas amostras foram inoculadas em placas de ágar MacConkey e Salmonella Shigella, e as placas foram analisadas quanto ao crescimento. Salmonela spp. foram detectados em algumas amostras de maionese e coliformes foram detectados em todas as amostras de açaí; 60% das amostras apresentaram coliformes termotolerantes, e apenas 40% estavam dentro dos limites estabelecidos pela ANVISA. As amostras coletadas de maionese e açaí estavam contaminadas com bolores e leveduras acima do limite estabelecido de 103 UFC/g. Assim, as amostras de maionese e açaí analisadas estavam contaminadas e impróprias para o consumo, demonstrando a importância das medidas higiênico-sanitárias na manipulação de alimentos.

Crotalaria ochroleuca (Fabaceae) is rich in bioactive compounds used for nematode control. Transformed root culture allows the production of a large amount of hairy root biomass, conditioned by auxin biosynthesis-related genes integrated via the process of Agrobacterium rhizogenes infection, which is known to cause a hairy root phenotype. We transformed A. rhizogenes to increase the biomass of hairy roots and optimized the process of production of bioactive compounds. The transformed nature of hairy roots was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction, which confers kanamycin resistance. The transformed roots were cultured in full-strength in liquid media to realize the growth of hairy roots and the production of bioactive compounds. The transformed roots were grown in a culture medium supplemented with elicitors to produce total phenols, and flavonoids. Chromatographic analysis of transformed roots revealed the presence of flavonoids apigenin-6,8-C-diglucoside and luteolin-6-C-glucoside. The results were obtained by conducting physiological and biochemical studies with the Flavonoids and studying the pathways that led to the production of large amounts of bioactive compounds from the hairy roots of C. ochroleuca. It was observed that the extraction of the compounds significantly affected nematodes and insect larvae, resulting in significantly high levels of economic damage to crops.

Shape memory alloys (SMA) are now widely studied in academia and have increasing usage in industry, as they allow efficient performance compared to mechanic actuators with reduced dimensions and the possibility of sensing temperature through the material itself. A subclass of the SMAs are the alloys with magnetic shape memory, still little explored as intelligent materials in Brazil. They combine the best properties of SMAs and common magnetostrictive materials. The magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA) can be activated not only by the presence of a thermal stimulus, but also by the presence of an applied magnetic field. In this research, the polycrystalline magnetic shape memory alloys Ni51.3Mn24Ga24.7 and Ni54Mn21Ga25 were manufactured and characterized. Differential scanning calorimetry, X-Ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy analyzes were performed to thermoanalytically and crystallographically characterize the alloys. Magnetic characterizations were also performed using Magnetic force microscopy. The results of the characterizations showed that the production process and the heat treatment were satisfactory for the fabrication of the ferromagnetic polycrystalline alloys. Besides that, the compositions Ni51.3Mn24Ga24.7 and Ni54Mn21Ga25, presented austenitic and martensitic 5M structures, respectively, at room temperature and it was possible to observe the alignment of the magnetic domains after magnetization.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the salicylic acid applications in attenuating the harmful effects of saline nutrient solution on the physiology and growth of 'Gaúcho' melon cultivated in the NFT hydroponic system. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in Pombal-PB, Brazil. The cultivation system used was the Nutrient Film Technique - NFT hydroponics. A completely randomized split-plot design was used, with the plot referring to four levels of salinity in the nutrient solution - ECns (2.1 control, 3.2, 4.3, and 5.4 dS m-1) and the sub-plot four concentrations of salicylic acid (SA) (0, 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 mM), applied via foliar spray, with six replications. Nutrient solution of 4.3 and 5.4 dS m-1 electrical conductivity promotes higher maximum and variable fluorescence, respectively. The stomatal conductance, transpiration, stem diameter, main branch length, leaf dry mass, and stem dry mass of ‘Gaúcho’ melon plants decrease with the increase in salinity of the nutrient solution. Salicylic acid increases the initial fluorescence and the main branch length of ‘Gaúcho’ melon plants in hydroponic cultivation. Salicylic acid at a concentration of 1.5 to 4.5 mM did not attenuate the effects of salt stress on the internal CO2 concentration, CO2 assimilation rate, and root dry mass of 'Gaúcho' melon plants.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as aplicações do ácido salicílico como atenuador dos efeitos deletérios da solução nutritiva salina sobre a fisiologia e o crescimento do melão 'Gaúcho' cultivado em sistema hidropônico NFT. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em Pombal - PB, Brasil. O sistema de cultivo utilizado foi a técnica do fluxo laminar de nutrientes - NFT. Foi utilizado um delineamento inteiramente casualizado em parcelas subdivididas, sendo a parcela referente a quatro níveis de salinidade de solução nutritiva - CEsn (2,1 controle, 3,2, 4,3 e 5,4 dS m-1) e a subparcelas quatro concentrações de ácido salicílico - AS (0, 1,5, 3,0 e 4,5 mM), aplicado via pulverização foliar, com seis repetições. A solução nutritiva de 4,3 e 5,4 dS m-1 condutividade elétrica promove maior fluorescência máxima e variável, respectivamente. A condutância estomática, a transpiração, o diâmetro do caule, o comprimento do ramo principal, a massa seca da folha e a massa seca do caule do meloeiro ‘Gaúcho’ diminuiu com o aumento da salinidade da solução nutritiva. O ácido salicílico aumenta a fluorescência inicial e o comprimento do ramo principal do meloeiro ‘Gaúcho’ em cultivo hidropônico. O ácido salicílico na concentração de 1,5 a 4,5 mM não atenuou os efeitos do estresse salino sobre a concentração interna de CO2, taxa de assimilação de CO2 e massa seca da raiz do meloeiro 'Gaúcho'.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the water status, photosynthetic pigments, and photochemical efficiency of mini watermelon plants under salt stress and phosphate fertilization. The experiment was conducted in pots under greenhouse conditions in Pombal, PB, Brazil. The experimental design used was randomized blocks in a 5 × 4 factorial scheme, with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.3, 1.3, 2.3, 3.3, and 4.3 dS m-1) and four doses of phosphorus (60, 80, 100, and 120% of the recommendation), with three replicates. The relative water content in the tissues decreased with the increase in ECw levels in all phosphorus doses, with decreases of 7.05, 7.81 and 8.83% per unit increase in ECw, in plants fertilized with 80, 100 and 120% P2O5. On the other hand, ECw levels increased electrolyte leakage, regardless of phosphorus doses of the recommendation. The synthesis of photosynthetic pigments and the quantum efficiency of photosystem II were inhibited by increasing water salinity from 0.3 dS m-1 in plants grown under phosphorus doses above 60% of the recommendation. Water salinity from 0.3 dS m-1 reduced chlorophyll b contents, initial, maximum, and variable fluorescence of mini watermelon plants, with a decrease of 11.86, 4.51, 4.53, and 4.54% per unit increment of ECw, respectively.

Resumo Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o status hídrico, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e a eficiência fotoquímica em plantas de mini melancia sob estresse salino e adubação fosfatada. O experimento foi conduzido em vasos sob condições de casa de vegetação em Pombal - PB. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 5 × 4, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3 e 4,3 dS m-1), quatro doses de fósforo (60; 80; 100 e 120% da recomendação), com três repetições. O conteúdo relativo de água nos tecidos diminuiu com o aumento dos níveis de CEa em todas as doses de fósforo, sendo os decréscimos de 7,05, 7,81 e 8,83% por aumento unitário da CEa, nas plantas adubadas com 80, 100 e 120% de P2O5. Por outro lado, os níveis crescentes de CEa aumentaram o extravasamento de eletrólitos, independente das doses de fósforo. A síntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos e a eficiência quântica do fotossistema II foi inibida pelo aumento da salinidade da água a partir de 0,3 dS m-1 nas plantas cultivadas sob doses de fosforo acima de 60% da recomendação. A salinidade da água a partir de 0,3 dS m-1 reduziu os teores de clorofila b, a flourescência inicial, a máxima e a variável das plantas de mini melancia, sendo a diminuição de 11,86; 4,51; 4,53 e 4,54% por incremento unitário da CEa, respectivamente.

Abstract Snakebite envenoming is a major global health problem that kills or disables half a million people in the world’s poorest countries. Identifying the biting snake and its habitat use is key to understanding snakebite eco-epidemiology and optimizing its clinical management. To prevent and combat the neglected snakebite disease, we characterize the morphology, geographic distribution, habitat use, and snakebites of medically important venomous snakes in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Despite Philodryas spp. not being considered of medical importance by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, we also explore their data once the bites may require medical intervention, may cause death, and their consequences are underestimated. Methods: We assessed taxonomy and geographic data from specimens housed in scientific collections, the literature, and the Notifiable Diseases Information System. Our data revealed fragility in the morphological characters recommended to distinguish Bothrops jararaca from B. jararacussu, identify the subspecies of Crotalus durissus and distinguish the species of Philodryas. To help identify these species, we present an identification key to the venomous snake species from Rio de Janeiro based on the morphological data collected. We record the genera Bothrops and Micrurus in all mesoregions of the state. Here, we provide the first record of C. durissus in the Serrana region, supporting the hypothesis of geographic expansion of the species in the state. The crotalic antivenom must not be missing in Médio Paraíba, Centro-Sul Fluminense, and Serrana, where the rattlesnake C. durissus occurs. Bothrops bilineatus and Lachesis muta have historical records presented for the first time herein. However, these species are likely endangered or extinct in the state. There were 7,483 snakebites reported between 2001 and 2019, with an annual average of 393.8 cases. The Bothrops genus is responsible for the majority of accidents. The highest number of cases occurred in the Serrana region, the largest pole of family agriculture in Rio de Janeiro. We improve the identification of venomous snake species, better delimit their distribution, and update the number of cases of snakebites, thus providing greater precision in the attention to this problem in Rio de Janeiro. We emphasize the importance of clinical studies to test using bothropic-crotalic antivenom and heparin in all mesoregions to treat B. jararacussu envenomation; and mechanical ventilation, atropine, and anticholinesterases in the emergency health centers in the Metropolitana and Norte Fluminense regions due to the occurrence of the coral M. lemniscatus in these areas.

Resumo O envenenamento com serpentes de importância médica é um grande problema de saúde global que mata ou incapacita meio milhão de pessoas nos países mais pobres do mundo. A identificação de serpentes de importância médica e aspectos de sua história de vida é fundamental para compreender a eco-epidemiologia dos acidentes ofídicos e otimizar seu manejo clínico. Para prevenir e combater a doença negligenciada do ofidismo, caracterizamos os dados de morfologia, distribuição, uso de habitat e acidentes ofídicos das serpentes peçonhentas de importância médica no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Apesar de Philodryas spp. não serem consideradas de importância médica pelo Ministério da Saúde do Brasil, também apresentamos seus dados porque suas picadas podem exigir intervenção médica, causar morte e suas consequências são subestimadas. Foram avaliados dados morfológicos e de habitat de espécimes pertencentes a coleções cientificas, literatura e dados do Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação. Nossos dados revelaram caracteres morfológicos frágeis recomendados para distinguir Bothrops jararaca e B. jararacussu, para identificar as subespécies de cascavel Crotalus durissus e para distinguir as serpentes cipó Philodryas spp. Para auxiliar na identificação dessas espécies apresentamos uma chave de identificação para as mesmas com base nos dados morfológicos coletados. Registramos os gêneros Bothrops e Micrurus em todas as mesorregiões do estado. Já o soro anticrotálico não pode faltar no Médio Paraíba, Centro-Sul Fluminense e Serrana, onde encontramos a cascavel Crotalus durissus. Aqui estendemos o registro da cascavel pela primeira vez para a região Serrana, corroborando a hipótese da expansão da espécie no estado. Bothrops bilineatus e Lachesis muta possuem registros históricos aqui apresentados pela primeira vez. Essas espécies provavelmente estão ameaçadas ou extintas no estado. Foram 7,483 acidentes entre 2001-2019, com média anual de 393.8. O gênero Bothrops é responsável pela maioria dos acidentes. O maior número de casos ocorreu na região Serrana, maior polo da agricultura familiar do Rio de Janeiro. Aperfeiçoamos a identificação das espécies de serpentes de importância médica, delimitamos melhor sua distribuição e atualizamos os acidentes ofídicos, proporcionando maior precisão na atenção ao ofidismo no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Ressaltamos a importância de estudos clínicos para testar o uso de soro antibotrópico-crotálico e heparina em todas as mesorregiões para o tratamento do ofidismo B. jararacussu e ventilação mecânica, atropina e anticolinesterásicos nos prontos-socorros das regiões Metropolitana e Norte Fluminense pela ocorrência do coral M. lemniscatus.

Neste trabalho apresentamos uma experiência simples que procura mostrar a influência da temperatura do ar atmosférico sobre a velocidade de propagação do som. A experiência consiste na observação simultânea da temperatura do ar e da velocidade de propagação do som, usando as próprias variações diurnas de temperatura. Objectives: Past suicide attempt (SA) is one of the most important risk factors for suicide death. An ideation-to-action framework posits that impulsivity, potentially traumatic events, and mental disorders also play a role in increasing suicide risk. This study aimed to assess the association between trait impulsivity, lifetime exposure to trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with SA in a sample of Brazilian college students. Methods: A total of 2,137 participants filled self-reported questionnaires consisting of a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, Trauma History Questionnaire, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist – Civilian version, and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Results: Our findings suggest that trait impulsivity may be interpreted as exerting a distal effect on SA, even in the presence of other variables – such as trauma history, psychological neglect, and PTSD – which also increase the odds of SA. High and medium levels of impulsivity, history of trauma, and PTSD increased the likelihood of SA. Conclusions: Intervention strategies to prevent SA may target trait impulsivity and exposure to traumatic experiences.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com esse estudo automatizar a aquisição da variável tempo bem como o cálculo da condutividade hidráulica do solo saturado pelo método da carga decrescente usando sensores de água e a plataforma Arduino. Para automatizar a medição da variável tempo, foi utilizado a placa Arduino Uno e instalados dois sensores de nível de água analógico nas alturas inicial (h0) e final (h1). Quando a água flui pelo solo e o nível da água passa pela parte inferior do sensor inicial (h0), o registro do tempo começa; termina quando a água está ausente da altura final do segundo sensor (h1). A equação para cálculo da condutividade hidráulica foi inserida no algoritmo para se ter o cálculo automaticamente. Amostras de solo indeformadas foram coletadas em uma área de plantio direto de longo prazo. Os valores médios do tempo e da condutividade hidráulica não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os permeâmetros. O índice coeficiente de massa residual (CRM) mostrou superestimação da variável tempo, indicando que o permeâmetro automático melhora a precisão da medição do tempo e da condutividade hidráulica do solo saturado estimada pelo método da carga decrescente.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to automate the acquisition of water travel time, as well as the computation of hydraulic conductivity of saturated soil by the falling head method, using water sensors and the Arduino platform. To automate the measurement of travel time, the Arduino Uno board was used, and two water sensors were installed at the initial (h0) and final (h1) heights of the water inside the core. When the water flows across the soil and the water level passes the bottom part of the initial sensor (h0), the time recording starts; it ends when the water is absent from the final height of the second sensor (h1). The equation for calculating the hydraulic conductivity was inserted into the algorithm so the calculation was automatic. Undisturbed soil samples were taken in a long-term no-tillage area. There were no significant differences for the time and hydraulic conductivity means between the permeameters. The coefficient of the residual mass index showed an overestimation of the time variable; thus, the automated permeameter improves the precision of time recording and saturated hydraulic conductivity estimated by the falling head method.

Abstract In August 2019, the Northeast coast of Brazil was impacted by an extensive oil spill, with immediate effects on marine and coastal ecosystems and significant impacts on tourism and food security. The human dimension of those impacts also includes the loss of cultural ecosystem services (CES); the non-material benefits stemming from strongly rooted cultural practices and relationships with nature. CES are of great importance for local residents and visitors that flock to Brazilian iconic beaches, however, they are difficult to measure using traditional assessment methods due to their subjective and non-tangible nature. Here, we use a big data approach to assess and map the loss of CES in the Northeast coast of Brazil caused by the recent oil spill. We analysed 2,880 digital images (published on the image sharing platform Flickr) taken before and during the disaster in affected locations, using a combination of automated techniques. Results showed a sharp decline in the number of users posting photos of locations affected by oil spill, and a decline in photos representing landscape and cultural appreciation. Our big data approach provides a fast and automated way to assess CES at large spatial scales that can be used to monitor the social impacts of environmental disasters.

Abstract Social media data is a rich source of information to assess human activities in catastrophic events. Here, we use social media data to understand how the 2019 Brazilian oil spill influenced social attitudes. Data were collected from the globally popular Instagram platform between August 1, 2019 and March 1, 2020. First, we manually identified the 5 most popular (portuguese language) hashtags related to the oil spill #oleonononordeste; #desastreambiental; #marsemoleo; #sosnordeste; #marsempetroleo. In the sequence, we collected information on captions, post metadata and users associated with posts retrieved using the selected hashtags. We identified a total of 7,413 posts. These posts were grouped in topics: government (47.76%), protest (24.37%), volunteers (24.45%), biodiversity (0.003%), origin (0.006%), tourism (0.008%) and others (0.016%). All topics had the peak of posts in October and November 2019. Nevertheless, interest in the oil spill was temporary, with most posts appearing in the 2-4 months after the beginning of the disaster. Our findings illustrate the enormous potential of using social media data for understanding and monitoring human engagement with environmental disasters, but also suggest that conservationists and environmental groups may only have a limited ‘window of opportunity’ to engage and mobilize public support for remediation and restoration efforts.
