ABSTRACT The efficiency of recurrent selection depends, among other factors, on the estimation of parameters that guide the breeder to obtain genetic gains for multiple traits. The aim of this research was to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters of maize populations during the third cycle of recurrent selection for traits of interest. The populations CRE-01 and CRE-02, potential for resistance to corn stunt, were described using genetic and phenotypic parameters of variance components, heritability, variation indices and correlation between 16 agronomic traits. Direct and indirect selection gains were estimated for each trait and considering the Smith and Hazel, Mulamba and Mock and Z index. Both populations have genetic variability for the traits. High heritability estimates were obtained for most of the traits, which associated with the genetic variability, indicate that these populations may show continuous gains with recurrent selection. All selection indexes provided satisfactory genetic gains, but the Z index was the most promising considering the results of both populations.

Abstract Topcrosses are routinely used in maize-hybrid programs. This study aimed to evaluate heterosis components and combining ability to predict hybrid means between synthetics from two groups of S1 maize lines using the intergroup topcrosses model that includes S2 lines. Two groups, each with 30 S1 maize lines, were crossed using an intergroup topcross system, with a mixture of lines from one group as a tester for the contrasting group. Simultaneously, 30 S2 lines from each group were generated via self-pollination. Lines and topcrosses were experimentally evaluated and the data were analyzed using a model adapted to the study design. The results showed the suitability of the proposed model for studying heterosis components and general combining ability, detailing additive and dominance effects. Prediction of hybrid means between synthetics showed the potential of the lines to generate base populations for an interpopulation breeding program.

Abstract Brazilian potato production is based on cultivars originating from the USA and Europe; however, these cultivars were developed under different environmental conditions than those found in Brazil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adaptability and stability of 18 potato clones (MLG), developed by the Universidade Federal de Lavras, and four cultivars in six environments in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The following traits were evaluated: marketable tuber yield (MTY), specific gravity (SG), and tuber appearance (TA). Clones, environments, and the genotype × environment interaction had significant effects on all traits. The GGE-biplot explained 71.78, 98.13, and 62.86 % of the sum of squares from the G+G×E for MTY, SG, and TA, respectively. Three MLG clones had higher adaptability and stability, as well as better performance, than the cultivars, making them good candidates for release as cultivars.

Abstract Genetic resistance to Potato Leafroll Virus (PLRV) is polygenic, which hinders the obtainment of resistant cultivars. However, works carried out at the International Potato Center have identified an andigena accession, LOP-868, with high resistance level and low accumulation of PLRV due to the gene of major effect Rladg. We verify the transfer of the Rladg allele to clones of the cross between LOP-868 and UFLA clones, by using the SCAR RGASC850 molecular marker; to evaluate the reaction of these clones to PLRV by inoculating the virus using aphids; and to analyze their agronomic performance of clones. Among the clones inoculated with viruliferous aphids, 49.3% were negative to the serological test, indicating possible resistance. Clones containing the Rladg allele were identified by the RGASC850 molecular marker, which demonstrates the possibility of transferring the Rladg allele of resistance to PLRV from LOP-868 to Solanum tuberosum. Some clones that presented the Rladg allele are also promising for agronomic performance.

RESUMO Os objetivos deste trabalho foram caracterizar morfologicamente os frutos de babaçu e estimar a sua produtividade (Attalea vitrivir) no Norte de Minas Gerais. Foram coletados 20 frutos maduros de 10 plantas em três áreas, no Município de Januária, MG Mensuraram-se 18 parâmetros biométricos dos frutos, determinou-se o teor de óleo das sementes e avaliaram-se a aderência à distribuição normal, a distribuição de frequência e a correlação entre as variáveis e o efeito do indivíduo e da área. Quantificou-se a produção de cachos por planta e de frutos por cacho em 10 plantas, nas três áreas, e estimou-se a produtividade potencial em condição de extrativismo e de cultivo. Em todas as variáveis biométricas estudadas, houve diferença significativa entre os indivíduos e áreas, evidenciando-se grande variabilidade na morfologia dos frutos. O teor médio de óleo foi de 45, 7%, com diferença significativa entre os indivíduos. A grande variabilidade encontradafavorece, em programas de melhoramento, a seleção de indivíduos mais produtivos. A produtividade potencial de endocarpo e óleo em densidade de 400 plantas/ha é de 6,4 e 1,2 t/ha, respectivamente, o que amplia a possibilidade de uso de A. vitrivir na produção de carvão, na indústria de biocombustíveis e na fixação de carbono.

ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to morphologically characterize fruits of the babassu palm tree (Attalea vitrivir) and to estimate their productivity in the north of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Twenty mature fruits were collected from 10 plants in three different areas in Januária, Minas Gerais. Eighteen biometric parameters of the fruits were measured, the oil contents of the seeds was determined, the adherence to normal distribution was evaluated, distribution frequencies were evaluated and the effects of individuals and areas on the variables and the correlations between them were analyzed. The production of fruit bunches per plant and the number of fruits per bunch from 10 plants were quantified in three areas and the potential production under both natural harvesting and cultivation conditions were estimated. Significant differences were found among all of the biometric parameters examined between the different individuals and the different areas, which shows wide morphological variability in the fruits. The average oil content was 45.7%, but with significant differences among individuals. The observed variability favors the selection of productive individuals in genetic improvement programs. The potential productivity of endocarps and oil based on a density of 400/plants per hectare would be respectively 6.4 and 1.2 tons/ha, which indicates the possibility of using A. vitrivir for producing charcoal, bio fuels, and for carbon fixation.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a relação do tempo para o início da tuberização e da duração do ciclo vegetativo com a tolerância ao calor em batata. Grupos de clones com diferentes tempos para o início de tuberização e durações do ciclo vegetativo foram definidos e avaliados em dois ambientes, e seus índices morfofisiológicos foram estimados em condições de estresse de calor. A amplitude para o início da tuberização foi de 31,8 dias e para a duração do ciclo vegetativo de 30,3 dias. Os grupos de clones formados apresentaram os seguintes parâmetros: tuberização precoce e ciclo vegetativo curto, tuberização precoce e ciclo longo (PL), tuberização tardia e ciclo curto e tuberização tardia e ciclo longo. Em condições de estresse de calor, a produção de tubérculos graúdos do grupo PL apresentou média superior à dos demais grupos. Seis clones (IRF 10-24, IRF 7-61, IRF 2-71, IRF 2-14, IRF 6-104 e IRF 10-44) e três testemunhas ('Markies', CBM 16-16 e CBM 9-10) foram considerados tolerantes ao estresse de calor (média diária de 21,2ºC) e responderam favoravelmente ao ambiente com temperaturas amenas (média diária de 19,0ºC). A partição de matéria seca para os tubérculos foi mais rápida nos clones do grupo PL. Os clones de tuberização precoce e ciclo vegetativo longo apresentaram maior tolerância ao calor, com maior produção de tubérculos do que os demais grupos.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the relationship of the time for tuber initiation and of the duration of the vegetative cycle with heat tolerance in potato. Clone groups with different tuber initiation times and duration of the vegetative cycle were defined and evaluated in two environments, and their morphophysiological indices were determined under heat stress conditions. The amplitude for the beginning of tuberization was 31.8 days, and for the duration of vegetative cycle was 30.3 days. The formed groups of clones showed the following parameters: early tuberization and short cycle, early tuberization and long cycle (PL), late tuberization and short cycle, and late tuberization and long cycle. Under heat stress conditions, the production of large tubers of the PL group was higher than that of the other groups. Six clones (IRF 10-24, IRF 7-61, IRF 2-71, IRF 2-14, IRF 6-104, and IRF 10-44) and three checks ('Markies', CBM 16-16, and CBM 9-10) were considered tolerant to heat stress (21.2ºC daily average), and responded favorably to environment at mild temperatures (19.0ºC daily average). Dry matter partitioning to the tubers was faster in the PL clone group. Clones of early tuberization and long vegetative cycle showed higher tolerance to heat stress, with higher tuber production than the other groups.

O carcinoma de células escamosas oral (CCEO) exibe prognóstico desfavorável em decorrência da capacidade de invasão aos tecidos vizinhos e elevada incidência de metástases. OBJETIVO: O presente trabalho objetiva analisar a expressão imunohistoquímica da proteína nm23 em CCEs de língua metastáticos e não-metastáticos. METODOLOGIA: A técnica da imunohistoquímica para a proteína nm23-h1 foi realizada em 35 casos de CCE de língua com metástase em 15 casos. Atribuiu-se escore 0, para ausência de marcação; 1, marcação focal e 2 para marcação difusa. RESULTADOS: Observou-se marcação focal para a proteína nm23 em 9 casos, difusa em 15, e ausência de marcação em 11 espécimes. O teste exato de Fischer foi aplicado, não havendo diferença estatisticamente significativa para positividade desta proteína nos casos metastáticos e não-metastáticos (p=0.365), apesar de que em 66.7% dos casos com metástase não houve marcação. CONCLUSÕES: A presença da proteína nm23 não esteve relacionada de forma positiva aos casos de CCE de língua sem metástase. Dessa forma, vários outros fatores inerentes à célula neoplásica e ao hospedeiro podem estar relacionados aos mecanismos supressores do processo metastático nesta entidade.

Oral squamous cells carcinoma (OSCC) shows unfavorable prognosis due to its invasion potential around the neighboring tissues and the elevated incidence of metastasis. AIM: the present paper aims at analyzing the immunohistochemical expression of the nm23 protein in metastatic and non-metastatic SCCs of tongue. METHODS: the immuno-expression to the nm23-hl protein was diagnosed in 35 tongue SCC (15 of which exhibiting metastasis). Nm23-hl immuno-scores were assigned as follow: score 0 = absent, 1 = focal and 2 = diffuse expression. RESULTS: The Fisher's exact test was performed and there was no statistical difference between the nm23-hl immuno-scores and the tongue SCCs studied cases (p=0.365), although 66.7% of metastatic cases presented negative nm23-hl expression. CONCLUSIONS: Protein nm23 was not associated with a positiveness for tongue SCC without metastasis. Thus, several others factors inherent to host and malignancy can be associated with the mechanisms that suppress the metastatic process in this disease.
