ABSTRACT The association of adjuvants with phytosanitary products has been tested for several years but is commonly recommended without considering technical and scientific criteria. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the association of insecticides with different adjuvants on surface tension, contact angle, coverage, hydrogen ionic potential (pH), and the formation of deposits exposed to rain. The insecticides thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, and lambda-cyhalothrin were tested at doses of 75 g ha−1, 150 g ha−1, and 150 g ha−1, respectively, with a spray volume of 200 L ha−1. Break-Thru 240®, Break-Thru 233®, Break-Thru Union®, Oleo FC Agraröl®, and Naturo'il® were added to each of these spray solutions. The results showed that the addition of adjuvants reduced the surface tension and contact angle, and consequently, increased droplet coverage. No deposit pattern was found in the thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, and lambda-cyhalothrin insecticides associated with the adjuvants and a higher amount of residue was observed on wheat leaves than on maize leaves. The use of adjuvants can be an alternative to improve the efficiency of insecticides, allowing the product to achieve its full control potential.

Abstract In this work the bioherbicide production from Phoma sp. by solid-state fermentation was optimized. Agroindustrial residues such as bagasse, soybean bran and corn steep liquor were used as substrate. The bioherbicide was extracted from the fermented solid and the supernatant was applied for the control of the target plant. The evaluated responses in the bioassay were plant height, root length, fresh and dry weight, number of flowers and phytotoxicity. The results in the bioassays demonstrated that the bioherbicide presented activity towards the target plant and the intensity of the effect was influenced by the formulation of the fermentation medium. The optimized condition for bioherbicide production was (wt%): moisture content 70.0, soybean bran content 30.0 and corn steep liquor (CSL) 20.0, it being possible to obtain an injury phytotoxicity level of 40. The bioherbicide showed a mode of action based on the inhibition of carotenoid biosynthesis.

Abstract Production of a bioherbicide for biological control of weeds requires a series of steps, from selection of a suitable microbial strain to final formulation. Thus, this study aimed to select fungi for production of secondary metabolites with herbicidal activity using biological resources of the Brazilian Pampa biome. Phytopathogenic fungi were isolated from infected tissues of weeds in the Pampa biome. A liquid synthetic culture medium was used for production of metabolites. The phytotoxicity of fungal metabolites was assessed via biological tests using the plant Cucumis sativus L., and the most promising strain was identified by molecular analysis. Thirty-nine fungi were isolated, and 28 presented some phytotoxic symptoms against the target plant. Fungus VP51 belonging to the genus Diaporthe showed the most pronounced herbicidal activity. The Brazilian Pampa biome is a potential resource for the development of new and sustainable chemical compounds for modern agriculture.

ABSTRACT Sampling is one of the basis for decision-making to control pests in soybean crops. Thus, to determine the most appropriate sampling plan is to define the sampling unit, the sampling method and sample size for the quantification of insect population. The objective of the study was to estimate the sample size to measure caterpillar species population density, with varying methods of collection, of altitude and of soybean cultivars. Samples were taken from 100 soybean fields, located in nine districts in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, during three growing seasons (2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013). In each field, 30 points separated by 20 meters each were marked off. At each point caterpillars of the species Chrysodeixis includens, Anticarsia gemmatalis and Rachiplusia nu were collected through the wide-beating cloth-methods and entomological network, totaling 6,000 units. The sample size (number of points) to determine the density of tracks varies with the method of collection and population density. Using the wide-beating cloth method for soybean caterpillars collection for an estimation error (confidence interval amplitude) equal to two caterpillars and population density in the class> 2 caterpillars. m-2, the sample size is 47, 78 and 18, respectively, for the C. includens, A. gemmatalis and Rachiplusia nu species, as for the entomological network method, sample sizes are 19 and 43 for the C. includens e A. gemmatalis species. The study shows that sample size (number of points) to determine caterpillars population density varies according to, collection method, altitude, soybean cultivars and population density.

RESUMO A amostragem de pragas é uma das bases para a toma de decisão no manejo de pragas em lavouras de soja. Assim, determinar o plano amostral mais adequado consiste em definir a unidade amostral, o método de amostragem e o tamanho de amostra para a quantificação da entomofauna. O objetivo foi estimar o tamanho de amostra para medir a densidade populacional de espécies de lagartas, variando métodos de coleta, altitude e cultivares de soja. Foram amostradas 100 lavouras de soja, distribuídas em nove municípios da região central do Rio Grande do Sul, em três safras agrícolas (2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013). Em cada lavoura foram demarcados 30 pontos distanciados 20 metros entre si. Em cada ponto foram coletadas lagartas das espécies Chrysodeixis includens, Anticarsia gemmatalis e Rachiplusia nu, por meio dos métodos pano-de-batida largo e rede entomológica, totalizando 6.000 coletas. Para cada lavoura, método de coleta e espécie de lagarta foi estimado a média da densidade populacional e o tamanho de amostra por meio de reamostragem. Usando o pano-de-batida largo para a coleta de lagartas em soja, para um erro de estimação (amplitude do intervalo de confiança) igual a dois lagartas e densidade populacional na classe > 2 lagartas. m-2, o tamanho de amostra é 47, 78 e 18, respectivamente, para as espécies C. includens, A. gemmatalis e R. nu e para rede o tamanho de amostra é 19 e 43, respectivamente, para as espécies C. includens e A. gemmatalis. Os resultados indicam que o tamanho de amostra (número de pontos) para determinar a densidade populacional de lagartas varia com o método de coleta, altitude, cultivar e a densidade populacional.

Larvas de Cyclocephala flavipennis Arrow, 1914, são comumente encontradas em cereais de inverno (trigo, cevada, aveia e triticale), milho e soja, no Rio Grande do Sul. Em março de 2012, larvas desta espécie foram detectadas em plantas de mirtileiro (Vaccinium ashei Reade), cultivar 'O´Neal', no município de Pelotas, RS. Os insetos alimentaram-se de raízes em áreas restritas do pomar. Este é o primeiro relato da ocorrência do coró-pequeno, C. flavipennis, em plantas de mirtileiro

Cyclocephala flavipennis Arrow, 1914 are usually found in winter cereals (wheat, barley, oat and triticale), corn and soybean in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Larvae of the species were detected in blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade) cultivar 'O´Neal', in March 2012 in the city of Pelotas, RS, Brazil. The white grub fed up with roots in restricted areas from the orchard. This is the first record of C. flavipennis in blueberry plants

White grubs (Coleoptera, Melolonthidae) in the "Planalto Region", Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil: Key for identification, species richness and distribution. The objective of this study was to survey the occurrence and geographic distribution of white grub species (Coleoptera, Melolonthidae) in cultivated and non-cultivated fields of the "Planalto Region", Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil and develop a key at genus-level. Twenty-eight species from 15 genera and three subfamilies were recorded: Dynastinae, Melolonthinae and Rutelinae. The species or genera recorded for the first time in the state are: Cyclocephala metrica, C. tucumana, Isonychus albicinctus, Liogenys bidenticeps, L. fusca, L. obesa and L. sinuaticeps, Paranomala violacea, as well as unidentified species of Amononyx, Dicrania, Leucothyreus, Macrodactylus, Plectris and Rhizogeniates. Among the species recorded, 23 were associated with winter crops. Only Cyclocephala metrica, Dyscinetus rugifrons, two species of Leucothyreus and one species of the tribe Sericini were not present in cultivated crop fields. Cyclocephala flavipennis and Diloboderus abderus occurred in most of the municipalities sampled, often associated with Plectris sp., C. modesta and C. putrida. The highest richness of melolonthids was concentrated in the northeast of the Planalto region.

Normalmente, a aplicação de inseticidas para o controle de Anticarsia gemmatalis na cultura da soja é realizada com bicos hidráulicos. Dentre outras possibilidades se destacam a assistência de ar junto à barra de pulverização e a aplicação de baixo volume oleoso por atomizadores rotativos de discos. Em um experimento realizado na cultura da soja, na safra 2009/10, avaliou-se a eficiência de controle de A. gemmatalis utilizando-se sistemas de aplicação e inseticidas. O delineamento utilizado foi bifatorial com o fator A constituído por sistemas de aplicação, sendo: A1 - pulverização com atomizadores rotativos de discos; A2 - pulverização com bicos hidráulicos; A3 - pulverização com assistência de ar e o fator D, constituído por inseticidas, sendo: D1 - Cipermetrina e D2 - Lufenurom + profenofós. Não houve interação do inseticida com o sistema de aplicação; além disso, a mistura de inseticidas Lufenurom + Profenofós apresentou efeito residual superior a Cipermetrina. O sistema de aplicação baixo volume oleoso com atomizadores rotativos de discos e o sistema de bicos hidráulicos com assistência de ar junto à barra de pulverização são mais eficientes que a pulverização com bicos hidráulicos no controle de Anticarsia gemmatalis na cultura da soja.

The application of insecticides to control Anticarsia gemmatalis in soybean is through hydraulic nozzles. Among the innovations stands out the air-assisted boom sprayer and the application of low oil volume by a rotary discs atomizer. In an experiment conducted with soybean during the 2009/2010 growing season, the control efficiency of A. gemmatalis using application systems and insecticides was assessed. The experimental design was a two-factor, with the factor A being the application systems, as follows: A1 - spraying with rotary discs atomizer; A2 - spraying with hydraulic nozzles and A3 - spraying with air-assistance; and factor D was composed of insecticides, as follows: D1 - Cypermethrin and D2 - Lufenuron + Profenofos. There was no interaction between insecticide and application systems and the insecticide Lufenuron + Profenofos presented a superior residual effect than Cypermethrin. The low oil volume spray system with rotary discs atomizer and system hydraulic nozzles with air-assisted boom sprayer are more efficient than hydraulic nozzles to control Anticarsia gemmatalis in soybean.

Primeiro registro de ocorrência de espécies de Liogenys (Coleoptera, Melolonthidae) associadas a culturas de inverno no Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil). As espécies de Liogenys Guerín-Meneville, 1831 são conhecidas no "Cerrado" brasileiro por causar danos em culturas de verão como soja e milho. O trabalho teve por objetivo identificar as larvas de melolontídeos que ocorrem nas culturas de grãos de inverno no Rio Grande do Sul. Larvas e adultos de Liogenys foram coletados nos municípios de Ijuí, Cruz Alta, Manoel Viana, São Luiz Gonzaga e São Francisco de Assis. As espécies foram identificadas como Liogenys bidenticeps Moser, 1919, L. fusca Blanchard, 1851, L. obesa Burmeister, 1855 and L. sinuaticeps Moser, 1918. Trata-se do primeiro registro de ocorrência destas espécies associadas a culturas de grãos de inverno, no Estado de Rio Grande do Sul. São necessários estudos de biologia e comportamento para confirmar sua associação com plantas hospedeiras.

First record of species of Liogenys (Coleoptera, Melolonthidae) associated with winter crops in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). Some species of Liogenys Guerín-Meneville, 1831 are known to cause damage to soybean, corn and other summer crops in the Brazilian "Cerrado" region. This work aimed to identify melolontid larvae associated with winter crops in Rio Grande do Sul state. Larvae and adults of Liogenys species were collected from the municipalities of Ijuí, Cruz Alta, Manoel Viana, São Luiz Gonzaga and São Francisco de Assis. The specimens were identified as L. bidenticeps Moser, 1919; L. fusca Blanchard, 1851, L. obesa Burmeister, 1855, and L. sinuaticeps Moser, 1918. This is the first record of these species associated with winter grain crops, for Rio Grande do Sul State. Biological and behavioral studies are necessary to confirm their association with host plants.

Nas últimas safras agrícolas, foram observadas severas infestações de ácaros fitófagos em diversos municípios do Rio Grande do Sul, demandando a utilização de pesticidas para seu controle. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar as espécies de ácaros fitófagos e predadores associados à soja em dez municípios daquele estado, nas safras de 2002/03 e 2003/04, em cinco cultivares de soja (A 6001 RG, A 7001 RG, A 8000 RG, A 8100 RG, Anta 82), todas geneticamente modificadas. Em amostras de folhas foram encontradas quatro espécies de ácaros fitófagos (Mononychellus planki (McGregor), Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), Tetranychus desertorum Banks e Tetranychus gigas Pritchard & Baker) e duas espécies de ácaros predadores (Phytoseiulus fragariae Denmark & Schicha e Typhlodromalus aripo De Leon). Tetranychus desertorum foi registrada pela primeira vez, associada à soja, no país. P. fragariae e T. aripo foram registradas pela primeira vez em soja. O potencial dos ácaros fitoseídeos como agentes de controle biológico na cultura da soja foi discutido. Dentre as hipóteses para o crescimento das infestações de culturas de soja com ácaros fitófagos estão a expansão progressiva da área cultivada, os veranicos observados nos últimos anos durante a estação de plantio, as modificações no sistema de cultivo da soja que levaram ao aumento no uso de pesticidas e a utilização de novas cultivares com características morfológicas ou bioquímicas que favorecem o desenvolvimento de populações desses ácaros.

During the last growing seasons, high infestations of phytophagous mites were observed in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, becoming necessary to apply pesticides for their control. The objective of this study was to identify phytophagous and predatory mite species associated with soybean in ten counties of that state, during the 2002/03 and 2003/04 growing seasons, in five soybean cultivars (A 6001 RG, A 7001 RG, A 8000 RG, A 8100 RG, Anta 82), all genetically modified. In samples of soybean leaves four phytophagous mite species (Mononychellus planki (McGregor), Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), Tetranychus desertorum Banks and Tetranychus gigas Pritchard & Baker) and two predatory mite species (Phytoseiulus fragariae Denmark & Schicha and Typhlodromalus aripo De Leon) were found. T. desertorum was found for the first time associated with soybean in the country. Phytoseiulus fragariae and T. aripo are reported for the first time on soybean. The potential of phytoseid mites as biological control agents in soybean crop was discussed. Among the hypotheses to explain the increasing infestation of soybean fields with phytophagous mites area are the progressively larger cultivated area, the dry spells observed in the last few years in the growing season, changes in soybean cropping system that led to increased use of pesticides and utilization of new soybean cultivars with morphological or biochemicals characteristics that favour the development of these mite populations.

RESUMO É registrada pela primeira vez a ocorrência de Cryptophlebia carpophagoides Clarke, 1951 (Lepidoptera: Olethreutidae) em frutos de timbaúva, Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong, no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Os frutos atacados foram coletados no campus da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Santa Maria, nos meses de maio e junho de 2003 e 2004. Foi constatado que as lagartas possivelmente causam danos aos frutos da espécie em consequência da liberação de serragem que pode ameaçar a sanidade, vigor e a germinação das sementes.

ABSTRACT The occurrence of Cryptophlebia carpophagoides Clarke, 1951, (Lepidoptera: Olethreutidae), in fruit of Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong, has bun first registered in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The damaged fruit was collected in the campus of National University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, from May to June of 2003 and 2004. It was evidenced that the caterpillars damage the fruit of that specie affecting the integrity, the vigor and the germination of the seeds.

Estufas plásticas representam uma alternativa para o cultivo de olerícolas sob condições climáticas desfavoráveis. O pepino (Cucumis sativus L.) está entre as hortícolas mais cultivadas nesses ambientes protegidos. Dentre os seus principais insetos-praga, destacam-se os crisomelídeos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar os inimigos naturais de adultos desses insetos em cultivo de pepino em ambiente protegido. O pepino foi plantado na primeira semana de março de 2003, em estufa plástica situada em área experimental da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, em Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Os crisomelídeos foram coletados a cada dois ou três dias por semana durante todo o período de cultivo, totalizando 28 datas de coleta. Nas primeiras 22 amostragens, foram coletadas 50 vaquinhas/data e, nas demais, 30/data. As espécies de crisomelídeos identificadas foram: Diabrotica speciosa (Germar), Cerotoma arcuata Olivier e Acalymma bivittula (Kirsch). Celatoria bosqi Blanchard (Diptera: Tachinidae) foi a única espécie de parasitóide identificada, parasitando D. speciosa com maior freqüência. Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. infectou adultos de D. speciosa e de A. bivittula, sendo que a primeira espécie se mostrou mais suscetível. Este é o primeiro registro da ocorrência de C. bosqi e B. bassiana em crisomelídeos em ambiente protegido.

Greenhouses represent an alternative for horticultural crops when the climatic conditions are unfavorable. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is one of the most cultivated horticultural crops in these protected environments. Among its main insect pests are the chrysomelid beetles. The objective of the present research was to determine the natural enemies of chrysomelids in cucumber grown in protected environment. The cucumber was seeded on the first week of March, 2003, in plastic greenhouse located in the experimental area of the Federal University of Santa Maria, in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Chrysomelids were collected every two or three days/week during the whole cultivation period, totalizing 28 collection dates. In the first 22 samplings, 50 chrysomelids/date were collected and, in the others, 30/date. The species of chrysomelids identified were: Diabrotica speciosa (Germar), Cerotoma arcuata Olivier and Acalymma bivittula (Kirsch). Celatoria bosqi Blanchard (Diptera: Tachinidae) was the only parasitoid specie identified parasitizing most frequently D. speciosa. Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. infected adults of D. speciosa and A. bivittula, and the first specie was more susceptible. This is the first record of the occurrence of C. bosqi and B. bassiana on chrysomelids in crops cultivated in protected environment.

RESUMO A cultura da erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil.) apresenta grande importância social, cultural e econômica no sul do Brasil. Com a formação de povoamentos puros e o aumento da área de plantio, observou-se um aumento populacional de muitas espécies de insetos. Dentre os insetos-praga, a broca- da-erva-mate, Hedypathes betulinus (Klug, 1825) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), é a de maior importância econômica, em razão dos danos que causa e seu difícil controle. A fase larval ocorre no interior dos galhos e troncos das plantas, dificultando sua detecção e manejo. O manejo cultural e o mecânico são os mais indicados, como a coleta de adultos, poda e queima de partes atacadas da planta, nutrição equilibrada, densidade adequada de plantas e manutenção de áreas com vegetação nativa ou ainda a introdução do policultivo. Com essas técnicas, espera-se um maior equilibrio do agroecossistema e, com isso, a diminuição dos insetos-praga a um nível aceitável. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho é reunir e discutir as informações da bioecologia e manejo da broca-da-erva-mate.

ABSTRACT The erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil.) has a social, cultural and economic importance in the southern states of Brazil. The pure stands of this culture was responsible for the increase of many species of insects. Hedypathes betulinus (Klug, 1825) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is considered the main pest from an economic viewpoint because of its difficult control and potential for damage. The larval phase occurs inside the twings and trunks, what makes more difficult to deal with its detention and management. Cultural and mechanical management are the most indicated, such as collection of adults, prunning and burning of plant parts damaged by the insect, balanced nutrition, adequate plant density and maintenance of areas with native vegetation or also the introduction of policulture. These strategies may increase the agroecossystem balance and thus a reduction of the insect-pest to an aceptable level. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assemble and the discuss the information on the bioecology and management of erva-mate borer.

É registrada a ocorrência de adultos de Naupactus curtus Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) alimentando-se de folhas de cafeeiro (Coffea arabica L.), aceroleira (Malpighia glabra L.) e amoreira (Morus alba L.) no Brasil, de outubro de 2001 a janeiro de 2002, período de chuva, em Piracicaba, SP.

Adults of Naupactus curtus Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) eating leaves of coffee (Coffea arabica L.), Barbados cherry (Malpighia glabra L.) and mulberry (Morus alba L.) are recorded in Brazil. The record was made during the rainy period, from October 2001 to January 2002, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo.

Neodiplogrammus quadrivittatus (Olivier) é um inseto originário da América do Sul, considerado benéfico. No Brasil é registrado para o estado de Rio Grande do Sul em plantas de Sesbania punicea (Cav.) Benth. e Cassia corymbosa Lamk. Em julho de 2002 foram encontrados adultos e larvas desta espécie em plantas de Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. no município de Piracicaba, São Paulo.

Neodiplogrammus quadrivittatus (Olivier) is a beneficial insect native of South America. In Brazil it is cited for the State of Rio Grande do Sul on plants of Sesbania punicea (Cav.) Benth. and Cassia corymbosa Lamk. Larvae and adults of this insect were found in July 2002 on plants of Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. in the municipality of Piracicaba, State of São Paulo.

São registradas dez espécies de Entiminae, Naupactini que ocorrem em Citrus no estado de São Paulo, Brasil. A maioria das espécies pertence ao gênero Naupactus Dejean, sendo: N. rivulosus (Olivier), N. tarsalis Boheman, N. curtus Boheman, N. navicularis Boheman, N. versatilis Hustache, N. ambiguus Boheman, e N. cervinus Boheman; uma espécie do gênero Teratopactus, T. nodicollis (Boheman); uma do gênero Parapantomorus, P. fluctuosus (Boheman); e uma de Symmathetes (gênero revalidado), Symmathetes kollari Schoenherr. As larvas vivem no solo alimentando-se das raízes dos citros, causando danos mais importantes que os adultos que consomem as folhas das plantas. O objetivo deste trabalho é fornecer uma chave, com o diagnóstico e fotografias dos adultos, para sua identificação. Também são apresentadas informações sobre a distribuição geográfica das espécies, associação com outras plantas e discutidos aspectos relevantes da sua biologia, com ênfase à oviposição.

Ten species of broad nosed weevils belonging to Entiminae, Naupactini, are recorded as harmful for roots of citrus in São Paulo state, Brazil. Most species belong to Naupactus Dejean, N. rivulosus (Olivier), N. tarsalis Boheman, N. curtus Boheman, N. navicularis Boheman, N. versatilis Hustache, N. ambiguus Boheman, and N. cervinus Boheman; one species was assigned to Teratopactus Heller, T. nodicollis (Boheman); one to Parapantomorus, P. fluctuosus Schoenherr (Boheman) and one to Symmathetes Schoenherr (a genus herein reinstated), S. kollari Schoenherr. Larvae live in soil and bore on roots of the trees, causing more damages than adults, that feed on leaves. The main goal of this paper is to provide a key, diagnosis and habitus photographs of the species, in order to facilitate their identification. We also provide information on their geographic range in Brazil and previous plant associations, and we discuss some relevant biological features, especially those related to oviposition habits.
