OBJETIVO: comparar medidas de tamanhos dentários, suas reprodutibilidades e a aplicação da equação de regressão de Tanaka e Johnston na predição do tamanho dos caninos e pré-molares em modelos de gesso e digital. MÉTODOS: trinta modelos de gesso foram escaneados para obtenção dos modelos digitais. As medidas do comprimento mesiodistal dos dentes foram obtidas com paquímetro digital nos modelos de gesso e nos modelos digitais utilizando o software O3d (Widialabs). A somatória do tamanho dos incisivos inferiores foi utilizada para obter os valores de predição do tamanho dos pré-molares e caninos utilizando equação de regressão, e esses valores foram comparados ao tamanho real dos dentes. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente, aplicando-se aos resultados o teste de correlação de Pearson, a fórmula de Dahlberg, o teste t pareado e a análise de variância (p < 0,05). RESULTADOS: excelente concordância intraexaminador foi observada nas medidas realizadas em ambos os modelos. O erro aleatório não esteve presente nas medidas obtidas com paquímetro, e o erro sistemático foi mais frequente no modelo digital. A previsão de espaço obtida pela aplicação da equação de regressão foi maior que a somatória dos pré-molares e caninos presentes nos modelos de gesso e nos modelos digitais. CONCLUSÃO: apesar da boa reprodutibilidade das medidas realizadas em ambos os modelos, a maioria das medidas dos modelos digitais foram superiores às do modelos de gesso. O espaço previsto foi superestimado em ambos os modelos e significativamente maior nos modelos digitais.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare dental size measurements, their reproducibility and the application of Tanaka and Johnston regression equation in predicting the size of canines and premolars on plaster and digital dental casts. METHODS: Thirty plaster casts were scanned and digitized. Mesiodistal measurements of the teeth were then performed with a digital caliper on the plaster and digital casts using O3d software system (Widialabs©).The sum of the sizes of the lower incisors was used to obtain predictive values of the sizes of the premolars and canines using the regression equation, and these values were compared with the actual sizes of the teeth. The data were statistically analyzed by applying to the results Pearson's correlation test, Dahlberg's formula, paired t-test and analysis of variance (p<0.05). RESULTS: Excellent intraexaminer agreement was observed in the measurements performed on both dental casts. No random error was present in the measurements obtained with the caliper and systematic error (bias) was more frequent in the digital casts. Space prediction obtained by applying the regression equation was greater than the sum of the canines and premolars on the plaster and digital casts. CONCLUSIONS: Despite an adequate reproducibility of the measurements performed on both casts, most measurements on the digital casts were higher than those on the plaster casts. The predicted space was overestimated in both models and significantly higher in the digital casts.

INTRODUÇÃO: a presença de um incisivo central superior solitário é um evento bastante incomum na população. A prevalência da chamada Síndrome do Incisivo Central Superior Solitário (SICSS) é verificada em 1:50.000 nascimentos, sendo registrado um maior acometimento no sexo feminino. Essa alteração no desenvolvimento da oclusão dentária é caracterizada por más formações estruturais, sobretudo na região de linha média do paciente. O diagnóstico precoce e o tratamento adequado dessa síndrome são de grande importância, pois essa condição talvez seja um indicativo de que o paciente pode apresentar outras más formações congênitas severas, não devendo ser a SICSS considerada uma simples anomalia dentária. Os procedimentos ortodônticos, nesses casos, variam dependendo do grau de comprometimento das estruturas ósseas da maxila, da oclusão em si, e principalmente da sutura palatina mediana. OBJETIVO: discutir, baseado em evidências científicas, aspectos importantes relacionados à SICSS, bem como apresentar um caso clínico de paciente do sexo feminino com SICSS, que foi submetida a tratamento ortodôntico na Clínica Odontológica Integrada Infantil da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria / RS. CONCLUSÃO: pela análise crítica da literatura, verifica-se ser muito importante o diagnóstico correto e precoce acerca dessa síndrome, visto que há possibilidade da mesma estar associada a outros problemas de desenvolvimento. Além disso, o paciente acometido pela SICSS deve ser assistido por uma equipe multidisciplinar de saúde, de forma a otimizar os resultados clínicos e devolver-lhe qualidade de vida.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of a single median maxillary central incisor is an uncommon event in the population. The prevalence of the Solitary Median Maxillary Central Incisor (SMMCI) syndrome is about 1:50,000 live births, occurring more in women. This alteration in the development of the dental occlusion is characterized by structural malformations, over all in midline region of the patient. The early diagnosis and the adequate treatment of this syndrome are of great importance, therefore this condition can be an indication that the patient can present other severe congenital malformations, not having to consider the SMMCI a simple dental anomaly. The orthodontic procedures, in these cases, vary depending on the degree of involvement of bone structures of the maxilla, the occlusion in itself, and mainly of the midpalatal suture. OBJECTIVES: To discuss, based on scientific evidence, important aspects related to the SMMCI and present a clinical case of female patient with SMMCI, which was submitted to orthodontic treatment in the Children's Dental Integrated Clinic of the Federal University of Santa Maria - RS/Brazil. CONCLUSION: According to the critical analysis of literature, it is very important to correctly early diagnose this condition, since there is the possibility of this syndrome to be associated with other problems of development. Moreover, the patients affected by SMMCI should be attended by a multidisciplinary health team in order to optimize the clinical results and recover the quality of life of these patients.

OBJETIVOS: o objetivo deste estudo foi investigar se alterações na posição vestibulolingual dos incisivos inferiores em adolescentes podem predispor ao desenvolvimento de recessões gengivais. MÉTODOS: documentações de 189 adolescentes leucodermas (107 meninos e 81 meninas) pré e pós-tratamento ortodôntico foram selecionadas. Os pacientes apresentavam uma idade média de 11,2 ± 1,9 anos nos exames iniciais e 14,7 ± 1,8 anos nos exames finais. A presença de recessão gengival foi avaliada em modelos de estudo e em fotografias. A inclinação dos incisivos inferiores, em relação ao plano mandibular (IMPA) foi medida nos cefalogramas laterais pré e pós-tratamento e os casos foram divididos em proclinados, retroinclinados e inalterados. RESULTADOS: não foi observada associação significativa entre a alteração da inclinação dentária e a presença de recessões gengivais, utilizando o teste do qui-quadrado (p = 0,277). Foi observado que 107 pacientes (56,6%) apresentaram os incisivos proclinados; 64 pacientes (33,9%) com incisivos retroinclinados; e 18 pacientes (9,5%) não apresentaram alteração na inclinação. Nos casos em que novas recessões gengivais ocorreram, 64,9% foram vestibularizados, 26,3% foram lingualizados e 8,8% não apresentaram alteração na inclinação. No grupo de pacientes que apresentou migração coronal da margem gengival, 60% foram movimentados para lingual, 30% foram vestibularizados e 10% não alteraram de posição. CONCLUSÕES: apesar de a porcentagem de casos que foram vestibularizados apresentar um maior número de novas recessões, esse não foi estatisticamente significativo.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether altering the labial-lingual position of lower incisors in adolescents might predispose to the development of gingival recession. METHODS: Records from 189 Caucasian adolescents (107 female and 81 male) pre and post orthodontic treatment were selected. Patients yielded mean ± SD values of initial records age 11.2 ± 1.9 years and final records age 14.7 ± 1.8 years. The presence of gingival recession was evaluated in models and photographs. The inclination of lower incisors to the mandibular plane angle (IMPA) was measured on lateral cephalograms, pre and post treatment. RESULTS: No significant association was observed between changes in tooth inclination and the presence of gingival recessions, based on chi-square analysis (p = 0.277). Data demonstrated that in 107 patients (56.6%) incisors were proclined, in 64 patients (33.9%) incisors were retroinclined and 18 patients (9.5%) did not show any changes in tooth inclination. In the cases where new gingival recessions occurred, 64.9% had been moved buccally, 26.3% had been moved lingually and 8.8% did not change inclination. In the group of patients that displayed coronal migration of the gingival margin, 60% were moved lingually, 30% were moved buccally and 10% did not change inclination. CONCLUSIONS: Even though the percentage of cases where teeth were proclined showed a larger number of new gingival recessions, it was not statistically significant.
