Abstract The anatomy of wood and charcoal was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy in three radial positions of E. urophylla and E. Grandis in different diameter classes at six years. The carbonization process was given in the muffle with an average rate of 0.5 °C increment per minute, using initial temperature of 150 °C and maximum of 450 °C. It was observed that the pore diameter presented higher values in the samples obtained in the internal position. The diameter classes of the trees almost did not influence the characteristics of the fibers. In the external position (close to the shell) fibers with higher values of cell wall thickness and smaller values of lumen diameter and width were identified. The fiber lumen diameter was not affected by the wood carbonization process, whereas the cell wall thickness and fiber width were reduced.

ABSTRACT The wood of different species may present macroscopic similarities, which hinders a reliable differentiation between the specie. This can be a problem, especially in the tropics, given the high species diversity in this region. To overcome this problem of wood identification, colorimetric criteria can be applied, aiming at a better and more objective classification, as opposed to the traditional anatomic criteria. Therefore, the aim of this research was to analyze the variability of the wood color considering the cutting planes (tangential and radial) and to determine its correlation with the wood basic density of ten Amazonian tree species. The following species were studied: Apuleia leiocarpa (amarelão), Hymenolobium modestum (angelim-pedra), Anadenanthera columbrina (angico), Dipteryx odorata (cumaru), Pouteria pachycarpa (goiabão), Mezilaurus itauba (itaubá), Hymenaea courbaril (jatobá), Simarouba amara (marupá), Astronium leicontei (muiracatiara) and, Bowdichia nitida (sucupira). The CIEL*a*b* system was used to determine the colorimetric parameters (L*, a*, b*, C*, and h*), which were obtained through a portable colorimeter. The species were classified in six color specific groups: light yellow, olive brown, yellowish olive, olive light, grayish white and reddish brown. We observed statistical effect of the cut planes only for luminosity, with higher mean for radial face. The correlation analyses between color and basic density showed that the denser woods are darker and have more red pigment (a*). There is negative correlation between luminosity (L*) and wood basic density (-0.78). The colorimetric parameter a* presented positive correlation with the basic density (r = 0.80).

Abstract: Aim of the study was to estimate the influence of the fiber length and basic density on microfibril angle of Eucalyptus microcorys wood. The study area was in an experimental planting at the Universidade Federal de Lavras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Three 37 year-old Eucalyptus microcorys trees were used, from whose stems six centimeter-thick discs were removed, cut at a high of three meters. The disks were sanded and planed to highlight the growth rings. Specimens were taken every 1,5 cm across the radius from pith to bark for determining microfibril angle, fiber length and wood basic density. The microfibril angles were determined by use of polarized light microscopy, while the fiber morphology and basic density were determined by usual methods. The averages found for microfibril angle (12,6°), fiber length (968 µm) and basic density (480 kg.m-3) are, in general, within the range of values reported for these characteristics of wood. The microfibril angle showed accentuated reduction of the average values in the pith-bark direction. The fiber length and basic density showed the opposite behavior. We observed that the density and fiber length may be used as a microfibril angle predictor, accounting for 96% and 79% of its variation, respectively.

RESUMO O trabalho teve como objetivo verificar o efeito de diferentes doses de nitrogênio na produção de matéria seca e na qualidade da madeira e carvão vegetal de um clone híbrido de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla, aos 6 anos de idade. Foram analisadas 40 árvores, sendo estudados 5 tratamentos em 4 blocos e amostradas 2 árvores por tratamento dentro de cada bloco. Os tratamentos consistiram da aplicação de 0 kg, 60 kg, 120 kg e 240 kg.ha-1 de nitrogênio (N), como sulfato de amônio, com o objetivo de avaliar se a resposta ao sulfato de amônio era exclusivamente devida ao N. Foi aplicado ainda um tratamento adicional, com aplicação de 120 kg.ha-1 de N como nitrato de amônio, totalizando 5 tratamentos. Foram avaliadas as características de crescimento da árvore, densidade básica, estimativa de massa seca, composição química e energética da madeira e as características físicas, químicas e energéticas do carvão. Observou-se que a produção de massa seca tendeu a aumentar com a aplicação da dosagem de nitrogênio. O efeito da dosagem de nitrogênio não influenciou a densidade básica e as características energéticas do carvão vegetal, porém os teores de nitrogênio elementar, extrativos totais e lignina na madeira apresentaram aumento com a nutrição aplicada. A nutrição utilizada não influenciou as características químicas e energéticas da madeira e do carvão vegetal.

ABSTRACT The present work aimed to verify the effect of different dosages of nitrogen on the production of dry material, and wood and charcoal quality made from a six years old hybrid clone of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla. Overall 40 trees were analyzed and five treatments in four blocks were studied, with two trees sampled per treatment within each block. Treatments consisted in the application of 0, 60, 120 and 240 kg.ha-1 of nitrogen (N) as ammonium sulfate in order to evaluate if the response to such compound was exclusively due to N. An additional treatment was applied with 120 kg.ha-1 of N as ammonium nitrate, totalizing five treatments. The tree growth, basic density, dry mass estimate, chemical and energetic composition of wood were evaluated, as well as physical, chemical and energetic characteristics of charcoal. The production of dry mass tended to increase with the nitrogen dosage applied. The effect of nitrogen dosage did not influence the basic density and energetic characteristics of charcoal, however the content of elemental nitrogen, total extractives and lignin of wood increased with nutrition. Such application did not influence the chemical and energetic characteristics of wood and charcoal.

Objetivou-se analisar o lenho de raiz, tronco e galho de barbatimão, Stryphnodendron adstringens em área de cerrado, no município de Lavras, MG. Amostras de lenho do tronco e do galho foram retiradas a 0, 25, 50, 75 e 100% da altura total do tronco e comprimento total do galho. Amostras de lenho das raízes foram retiradas a 40 cm de profundidade do solo. Qualitativamente o lenho do barbatimão possui camadas de crescimento distintas para o tronco e galho; na raiz, encontram-se pouco definidas. Porosidade difusa. Placas de perfuração simples. Pontoações intervasculares e raio-vasculares, areoladas, alternas e com guarnições. Parênquima paratraqueal vasicêntrico. Raios predominantemente unisseriados, apresentando raios multisseriados. Os raios são heterocelulares, onde o corpo do raio é formado por células procumbentes e margens com células quadradas e eretas. Observaram-se, raios homogêneos formados apenas por células procumbentes. Presença de cristais nas células dos parênquimas axiais, radiais e nas fibras. Quantitativamente, as características relevantes para o lenho foram: maior frequência de vasos para o galho; paredes das fibras mais espessas no lenho de raiz e raio mais largo no tronco.

This study aimed to analyze the wood of root, trunk and branch from barbatimão (Stryphnodendron adstringens) in the cerrado area, in Lavras (Minas Gerais State, Southeastern Brazil). Trunk and branch wood samples were removed at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the trunk and branch total height. Root wood samples were removed at 40 cm depth soil. Qualitatively the barbatimão wood has distinct growth layers for the trunk and branch; at the root they are poorly defined. Diffuse porosity. Simple perforation plates. Inter-vascular and vessel-ray. Bordered, alternate and with garnishes. Vasicentric paratracheal parenchyma. Uniseriate rays predominant, presenting multiseriate rays. The rays are heterocellular, where the ray body is formed by procumbent cells and margins with square and upright cells. It was observed that homogeneous rays are formed only by procumbent cells. Crystals are present at the axial and radial parenchyma cells, and in the fibers. Quantitatively the relevant features to the wood were: higher vessel frequency in branch wood; thicker wall fibers in the root wood and larger rays in the trunk

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do material genético, clones e espécies, e da classe de diâmetro nas características de crescimento, composição química, densidade básica e a estimativa de massa seca de madeira. Foram avaliados quatro clones e cinco espécies, aos quatro anos de idade, de Eucalyptus procedentes da empresa RIMA Industrial S.A. Foram avaliadas cinco árvores por clone e espécie em três e quatro classes diamétricas, respectivamente. Avaliaram-se as características individuais de crescimento da árvore, a densidade básica, a estimativa de massa seca, o teor de lignina, extrativos totais, holocelulose e cinzas. O volume, com e sem casca, e a estimativa de massa seca apresentaram efeito significativo de material genético (clone e espécie) e classe diamétrica. O teor de lignina não foi influenciado significativamente pelo material genético e classe diamétrica. A densidade básica apresentou efeito significativo de classe diamétrica para os clones e de material genético para as espécies. O teste de identidade de modelos somente foi não significativo para a estimativa de massa seca para as espécies, possibilitando usar a equação comum independente da espécie. Os clones apresentaram madeira mais homogênea, com menor densidade básica, extrativos totais e lignina total e maior teor de holocelulose, características mais adequadas à produção de polpa celulósica. As espécies apresentaram madeira mais heterogênea, com maior densidade básica, estimativa de massa seca, extrativos totais e lignina total e menor teor de cinzas e holocelulose, características desejáveis à produção de bioenergia

This research aimed to determine the basic density, the estimate of dry mass and the chemical composition of clones and Eucalyptus species. Four clones and five species of Eucalyptus were appraised, with four years old, coming from the RIMA Industrial Company S.A. Five trees were sampled for clone and species in three and four diametric classes, respectively. Wood characteristics as the basic density, the insoluble and soluble lignin in acid sulfuric, extractive total and ash content in the wood were available. The results showed that the volume, with or without bark, and estimated dry mass showed significant effects of genetic material (clone and species) and diameter class. The lignin content was not significantly influenced by both genetic material and diameter class. Wood basic density had a significant effect of diameter class for clones and genetic material for the species. The identity test for linear models was only not significant for estimated dry mass of the species, indicating to be possible to use the common equation independent of the species. The clones showed a more homogeneous wood with lower average basic density, extractives and total lignin content and higher holocellulose content, characteristics which are suitable for pulp production. The wood species showed more heterogeneous with highest average basic density, estimated dry weight, total lignin and extractives content and lower ash and holocellulose content, characteristics desirable for bioenergy production

O trabalho vem contribuir com informações sobre a anatomia estrutural da madeira de raiz e caule de Aegiphila sellowiana Cham. (Verbenaceae). O estudo foi conduzido em área de cerrado, no município de Pratânia, estado de São Paulo. Três espécimes de A. sellowiana foram coletados. Amostras do caule foram coletadas à altura do peito (AP), a 1,30 m do solo, amostras de raízes foram coletadas de 30 a 40 cm da base do tronco. Houve variação qualitativa e quantitativa entre o lenho de caule e raiz. Camadas de crescimento distintas foram observadas no lenho de caule e raiz. Foram observados placas de perfuração simples nos elementos de vaso no lenho de caule e raiz. Fibras bifurcadas, com cavidades e interrupções da parede, e fibras septadas no lenho dos dois órgãos. Raios uni e multisseriados foram observados em caule e raiz, com uma a três células de largura em caules, com uma a quatro células de largura em raiz. As características quantitativas relevantes entre o lenho da raiz e caule em A. sellowiana foram comprimento, diâmetro e freqüência de vaso; diâmetro e espessura da parede da fibra; largura, altura e frequência de raio; diâmetro da pontoação intervascular.

This study compared the structural anatomy o stem and root wood of Aegiphila sellowiana Cham. (Verbenaceae). The study was conducted on a cerrado area in the town of Pratânia, São Paulo state. Three specimens of A. sellowiana were collected for the study. Stem samples were collected at a breast height (1.30 m from the soil), root samples were collected 30 to 40 cm from the stem base. There were both qualitative and quantitative variation between root and stem wood. Distinct growth rings demarcated were observed in stem and root wood. Simple perforation plates were found in the vessel elements in root and stem wood. Forked fibers, fibers with cavities and interruptions in their wall, and septate fibers were observed in the wood of both organs. Uni-and multiseriate rays were found in the wood of the two organs, one to three cells wide in the stem and one to four cells wide in the root. The relevant quantitative characteristics between root and stem wood in A. sellowiana were: length, diameter and frequency of vessel; fiber wall diameter and thickness; ray width, height and frequency; and intervascular pit diameter.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was toevaluate the shear strength of plywood panels produced with tannin adhesives obtained from the leaves and bark of the species Stryphnodendron adstringens (barbatiman). To this end, panels were produced with veneers of Araucaria angustifólia and tannin adhesive from the leave sand bark of barbatiman, tannin from the bark of black acacia (Acacia mearnsii), commercial phenol-formaldehyde adhesive, and mixtures of different types of tannins. For each treatment, six panels with five plies and adhesives in 320 g/m2 ratio in double glue line were produced. The adhesive from the bark of barbatiman showed the same shear strengthofthe comercial adhesive from the tannin bark of black acacia, but with less strength than the panels produced with phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. The tannin adhesive from the leaves of barbatiman is feasible of application only in combination with others types of tannins.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a resistência ao cisalhamento de painéis compensados produzidos com adesivos à base de taninos obtidos das folhas e das cascas da espécie Stryphnodendron adstringens (barbatimão). Para tanto, foram produzidos painéis compensados com lâminas de Araucaria angustifolia e com os adesivos à base de tanino de casca e folha de barbatimão, tanino de casca de acácia negra (Acacia mearnsii), adesivo fenol-formaldeído comercial e com misturas dos diferentes tipos de taninos. Para cada tratamento, foram produzidos seis painéis de cinco lâminas e com os adesivos na gramatura de 320 g/m2 em linha dupla de cola. O adesivo de casca de barbatimão apresentou a mesma resistência ao cisalhamento que o adesivo comercial de tanino de casca de acácia negra, mostrando-se, contudo, com menor resistência do que os painéis produzidos com o adesivo fenol-formaldeído comercial. O adesivo à base de tanino da folha de barbatimão apresentou possibilidade de aplicação apenas em associação com outros tipos de taninos.

A região do cerrado tem se mostrado como importante provedora na crescente demanda por bens de consumo de origem vegetal, animal ou agroindustrial. No entanto, ainda são insuficientes os estudos relativos à vegetação desse bioma. Tal fato tem causado dificuldades na utilização dessas espécies, seja como opção de uso econômico, ou como forma de recomposição e recuperação de áreas devastadas. Em razão da carência de informações referentes às espécies do cerrado, este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de coletar informações sobre a constituição química e a densidade básica da madeira de raiz, fuste e galho de Stryphnodendron adstringens (barbatimão). Para tanto, utilizaram-se materiais coletados na raiz e ao longo do fuste e galho de três espécimes de barbatimão. Verificaram-se tendências de incremento dos teores de holocelulose no sentido da raiz para o fuste e galho. O contrário aconteceu com o teor de lignina e extrativos. O teor de cinzas teve seu menor valor na posição referente ao fuste. As densidades básicas entre raiz, fuste e galho não se diferenciaram estatisticamente.

The Cerrado region has been a major provider to meet the growing demand of vegetal, animal or agribusiness consumer goods. However, studies on the vegetation of this biome are still incipient and that has been preventing use of Cerrado species, whether for economic purposes or as a way of restoring and recovering devastated areas. Due to lack of information concerning species of the Cerrado biome, this study was conducted in an attempt to gather information about the chemical constitution and basic wood density of the root, stem and branch portions of Stryphnodendron adstringens, also known as 'barbatimão'. To that end, material was collected from the root and along stem and branch portions of three specimens of barbatimão. An increasing tendency was observed in holocellulose contents in the root-to-stem and root-to-branch direction. The opposite occurred with lignin and extractive contents. The lowest ash content was found in the stem portion. Values of basic density did not differ statistically between the root, stem and branch portions.

O presente trabalho vem contribuir com informações sobre a anatomia estrutural da madeira de raiz e caule de L. salviifolia Cham. (Verbenaceae). O estudo foi conduzido em área de cerrado, no Município de Pratânia, Estado de São Paulo (23º02'55,5" S e 48º31'26,1" W). Três espécimes de Lippia salviifolia foram coletados. Amostras do caule foram coletadas à altura do peito (AP), isto é, a 1,30 m do solo e as amostras de raiz foram coletadas de 30 a 40 cm da base do tronco. Houve variação qualitativa e quantitativa entre o lenho de raiz e de caule. As características quantitativas mais relevantes que diferenciam o lenho da raiz do de caule em L. salviifolia foram comprimento e freqüência de vasos, comprimento, diâmetro e espessura da parede das fibras e largura e altura de raios. Camadas de crescimento bem definidas foram observadas no lenho de caule e raiz. Placas de perfuração simples e múltiplas foram observadas nos elementos de vaso tanto no lenho de caule quanto no de raiz, entretanto placas radiadas foram encontradas apenas no lenho de raiz. Foram observadas fibras septadas e raios mais largos no lenho de raiz.

Wood from stem and root of L. salviifolia Cham. (Verbenaceae) was studied. Three plants were sampled in a "cerrado" area in Pratânia municipality, São Paulo state (23º02'55,5" S e 48º31'26,1" W). Stem samples were collected at breast height (1.30 m from soil), and root samples were collected 30 to 40 cm from the stem base. There were qualitative and quantitative variations between root and stem wood. The most relevant quantitative characteristics diferentiating root wood from stem wood were: vessel elements length and frequency; fibre length, diameter and wall thickness; and ray width and height. Well defined growth increments were observed in root and stem wood. Simple and multiple perforation plates were observed in vessel elements in root and stem wood, however radiate plates were observed only in root wood. Septate fibres and wider rays were observed in root wood.
