Aceria guerreronis Keifer é importante praga do coqueiro no mundo. Dada a falta de métodos padronizados para a quantificação dos danos causados por esse eriofiídeo, uma escala diagramática com níveis de 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 48 e 70% de danos foi elaborada e testada para precisão e reprodutibilidade das estimativas. Para validar a escala, frutos com diferentes níveis de dano foram previamente avaliados com o programa Assess® e submetidos à avaliação por 10 avaliadores inexperientes com e sem a escala (1ª avaliação) e sete dias após (2ª avaliação) com os mesmos avaliadores, empregando-se as fotos digitalizadas dos mesmos frutos com seqüência diferente. A acurácia e a precisão de cada avaliador foram determinadas por regressão linear simples entre o dano observado e estimado. Sem a utilização da escala, sete de 10 avaliadores superestimaram o nível de dano, sendo pouco precisos. No entanto, avaliadores utilizando a escala obtiveram melhores níveis de acurácia e precisão. Os avaliadores apresentaram níveis mais elevados de reprodutibilidade das estimativas com a utilização da escala comparada às avaliações sem a escala. A escala foi utilizada para determinar a relação entre a infestação e o dano causado por A. guerreronis. A relação entre infestação e níveis de dano apresentou elevada precisão (R² = 99,87%, P < 0,0001) pela equação lny = 4,948 - 0,121 x + 1,789 lnx. Portanto, os resultados comprovam que é possível estimar a população de A. guerreronis nos frutos de coco infestados com a utilização da escala diagramática.

Aceria guerreronis Keifer is an important pest of coconut worldwide. Due to the lack of standardized methods to quantify damage of this eryophyid, a diagrammatic scale with indices of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 48 and 70% of damage caused by A. guerreronis was elaborated and tested to accuracy, precision and reproduction of the estimations. To validate the scale, fruits with different levels of damage were previously measured with the program Assess® and submitted to 10 inexperienced evaluators with or without the scale (1ª evaluation) and seven days after (2ª evaluation) with the same evaluators, using digitized pictures of the same fruits in a different sequence. The accuracy and precision of each evaluator was determined through linear regression between observed and estimated damage. Without using the scale, evaluators were less precise as seven out of 10 overestimated the damage, while evaluators provided with the scale were much more accurate. Also, evaluations with the aid of the scale were much more reproducible than without the scale. The scale was used to determine the relationship between infestation and damage levels caused by A. guerrerronis. The relationship between infestation and damage fitted by the equation lny = 4.948 - 0.121x + 1.789 lnx (R² = 99.87%, P < 0.0001). Therefore, these findings show that it is possible to estimate A. guerreronis population density on infested coconut fruits by using the diagrammatic scale.

Aceria guerreronis Keifer pode causar danos severos em coqueiro em vários países ao redor do mundo. Raros estudos têm sido conduzidos para determinar os ácaros predadores associados com A. guerreronis no Brasil. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a prevalência de A. guerreronis e dos predadores associados nas brácteas e na superfície dos frutos abaixo delas, durante 12 meses, em frutos de coqueiro adulto ao longo da costa de Alagoas, Paraíba e Pernambuco, no Nordeste do Brasil. Ácaros de 10 famílias foram encontrados, contudo a espécie mais abundante foi A. guerreronis, correspondendo a 99,5% dos ácaros coletados. Dentre as espécies predadoras prevaleceram os ácaros Phytoseiidae Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) e Neoseiulus paspalivorus (De Leon). Estes são achatados e possuem pernas curtas, características que lhes permitem invadir o habitat ocupado por A. guerreronis. Outros predadores foram encontrados, mas em número bem menor, provavelmente pela dificuldade que têm em penetrar nas áreas comumente habitadas por A. guerreronis. Contudo, essas espécies têm potencial de predação sobre o ácaro quando este sai de seu habitat preferido para se dispersar. Não se observaram correlações significativas entre os níveis de fatores abióticos e os níveis populacionais de A. guerreronis ou dos fitoseídeos associados a essa espécie. Isso provavelmente se deu devido aos efeitos simultâneo e conflitante daqueles fatores sobre os ácaros no campo, ou a diferenças significativas entre os fatores climáticos medidos no ambiente e aqueles prevalentes no habitat ocupado por A. guerreronis.

Aceria guerreronis Keifer can cause severe damage to coconuts in several countries around the world. Rare studies have been conducted to determine the predatory mites associated with A. guerreronis in Brazil. The study evaluated the prevalence of A. guerreronis and associated predators on the bracts and on the surface of the fruits underneath the bracts, for 12 months, on coconut palms grown along the coast of the States of Alagoas, Paraíba and Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. Mites of 10 families were found, but by far the most abundant species was A. guerreronis, corresponding to 99.5% of the mites collected. The prevailing species amongst the predators were the Phytoseiidae mites Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) and Neoseiulus paspalivorus (De Leon). These are flat mites that have short limbs, characteristics that allow them to invade the main habitat occupied by A. guerreronis. Other predators were found, but in low numbers, due mainly to their difficulty in reaching the fruit areas most inhabited by A. guerreronis. However, these mites could prey on that pest when it leaves its preferred habitat to disperse. No significant correlations were observed between the levels of abiotic factors and the population levels of A. guerreronis or of the phytoseiids associated with it. This probably occurred due to the simultaneous and conflicting effects of those factors on the mites in the field, or to significant differences between the climatic factors measured in the environment and those prevailing in the habitat occupied by A. guerreronis.

Aceria guerreronis Keifer é considerada uma das principais pragas do coqueiro no mundo. Dentre os Phytoseiidae relatados nessa cultura, Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) tem sido encontrado associado a A. guerreronis. Com o intuito de verificar se A. largoensis se alimenta de A. guerreronis, foi estudada a biologia desse predador com diferentes fontes de alimento, incluindo A. guerreronis. Foram avaliadas três dietas [Tetranychus urticae Koch + pólen de mamona (Ricinus communis L.) + mel a 10%, A. guerreronis + pólen + mel e A. guerreronis isoladamente], avaliando-se o desenvolvimento, sobrevivência, oviposição, razão sexual e longevidade de A. largoensis a 27ºC, 60 ± 5% de umidade relativa e fotofase de 12h. Tabelas de vida de fertilidade foram construídas. A duração da fase imatura foi menor na dieta constituída apenas por A. guerreronis, enquanto que a fecundidade foi maior nas dietas à base de presa + pólen + mel. Não houve diferença entre os valores de sobrevivência das formas imaturas submetidas a diferentes dietas alimentares. Os parâmetros da tabela de vida de fertilidade foram superiores quando a alimentação foi constituída por A. guerreronis ou T. urticae + pólen + mel, embora o predador tenha sido capaz de completar seu ciclo biológico e se reproduzir quando alimentado exclusivamente com A. guerreronis. Os resultados sugerem que A. largoensis seja um predador de A. guerreronis em condições naturais e que possa estar desempenhando algum papel no controle dessa praga.

Aceria guerreronis Keifer is considered one of the main pests of coconuts around the world. Amongst the Phytoseiidae recorded on this crop, Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) has been reported in association with A. guerreronis. In order to verify whether A. largoensis feeds on A. guerreronis, the biology of this predator was evaluated on different food sources, including A. guerreronis. Three types of diet were tested [Tetranychus urticae Koch + castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) pollen + honey at 10%, A. guerreronis + pollen + honey, and only A. guerreronis], determining its development, survivorship, oviposition, sex ratio and longevity at 27ºC, 60 ± 5% RH 12 h photophase. Fertility life tables were constructed. The duration of the immature phase was lower when feeding only on A. guerreronis, while fecundity was higher when feeding on a prey + pollen + honey. There was no difference in relation to survivorship of the immature stages between the three diets. Parameters of fertility life tables were higher when the diet included A. guerreronis or T. urticae + pollen + honey, although the predator was able to complete its life cycle and reproduce when feeding exclusively on A. guerreronis. The results suggest that A. largoensis preys upon A. guerreronis under natural condition and that it might play some role in the control of the latter.

O sucesso no uso de Trichogramma como agente de controle biológico depende de sua produção em laboratório que é etapa fundamental, entre outras, em qualquer programa de controle biológico. Este trabalho investigou a capacidade de parasitismo de Trichogramma pratissolii Querino & Zuchi, uma nova espécie encontrada, parasitando ovos de Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) e Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) submetidos a 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 e 33ºC. Ovos desses hospedeiros foram oferecidos para fêmeas recém-emergidas por 24h. Esse procedimento foi repetido para cada fêmea e temperatura até a morte das fêmeas do parasitóide, para estimar o parasitismo diário, acumulado e a longevidade das fêmeas. Em ambos hospedeiros, o parasitismo diário decresceu em função da idade da fêmea. Em todas as temperaturas estudadas e ambos hospedeiros, o maior parasitismo ocorreu durante as primeiras 24h e, atingiu 80% do total no quarto e terceiro dias quando parasitou A. kuehniella e C. cephalonica, respectivamente. Para ambos os hospedeiros os maiores índices de parasitismo foram observados entre 21ºC e 27ºC. A longevidade média de fêmeas de T. pratissolii sem alimento e provenientes de ovos de A. kuehniella e C. cephalonica sobreviveram de 1,0 a 8,9 dias, quando criadas a 15ºC e 33ºC, respectivamente. Os resultados encontrados indicam que ovos de A. kuehniella e C. cephalonica e temperaturas de 21ºC a 27ºC foram apropriados para criação de T. pratissolii.

The successful use of Trichogramma as biocontrol agent depends on its mass production in laboratory, a fundamental step for any biological control program among other factors. This work investigated the parasitism capacity of Trichogramma pratissolii Querino & Zuchi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), a new recorded Trichogramma species, parasitizing eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) and Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) under the temperatures of 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33ºC. Eggs of these hosts were offered to newly emerged females during 24h. This procedure was repeated daily for each female and each temperature up to female death, in order to estimate daily and accumulated parasitism, and female longevity. On both hosts, the daily parasitism decreased as function of the female age. Under all temperatures studied and both hosts the highest rate of parasitism was observed during the first 24h of host exposure, and reached 80% of total parasitism in the 4th and 3rd days when parasitizing A. kuehniella and C. cephalonica, respectively. On both hosts, the highest parasitism rate was observed under temperatures from 21ºC to 27ºC. Average longevities of T. pratissolii females deprived of food emerging from A. kuehniella and C. cephalonica lived for 1.0 and 8.9 days when reared at 15ºC e 33ºC, respectively. The results indicate that eggs of A. kuehniella and C. cephalonica and temperatures from 21ºC to 27ºC were appropriate to rear T. pratissolii.

A toxicidade de formulações comerciais de nim a Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) e a dois ácaros predadores, Euseius alatus De Leon e Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) foi estudada. A toxicidade tópica foi avaliada com três formulações comerciais (Natuneem, Neemseto e Callneem) e com o extrato de sementes de nim, todos na concentração de 1%, em comparação ao acaricida padrão, abamectina na concentração de 0,3ml/L e ao tratamento controle com água destilada. Com base no melhor efeito tópico sobre T. urticae, a formulação Neemseto foi selecionada para avaliar diferentes concentrações sobre ovos, e o efeito residual e repelente sobre adultos desses ácaros. O tratamento dos ovos consistiu na imersão em diluições de Neemseto por cinco segundos; e o efeito residual e repelente sobre adultos foi avaliado pela imersão de discos de folha nas diluições também por cinco segundos. A toxicidade de Neemseto a ovos e adultos foi maior para T. urticae comparada à toxicidade observada para os ácaros predadores. Neemseto foi repelente para T. urticae e E. alatus, quando testados nas concentrações 0,25; 0,50 e 1,00%, mas não afetou P. macropilis. A fecundidade de T. urticae foi reduzida significativamente por Neemseto em todas as concentrações, enquanto para os ácaros predadores, redução significante na fecundidade foi observada apenas nas maiores concentrações. Assim, nas formulações testadas, Neemseto foi o mais eficiente para o ácaro-rajado e provocou, relativamente, menor impacto aos ácaros predadores estudados.

The toxicity of selected commercial formulations of neem on Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) and two predatory mites Euseius alatus De Leon and Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) was studied. Topical toxicity was tested with the commercial formulations (Natuneem, Neemseto and Callneem) and extract of neem's seeds at concentration 1%, compared to the standard acaricide abamectin at concentration of 0.3 ml/L and the control treatment (distilled water). Based on the best performance against T. urticae through topical contact, the formulation Neemseto was selected to be evaluated using different concentrations against eggs, and residual and repellent effects on adults of the mites. Egg treatment consisted of dipping eggs into Neemseto dilutions and control treatment for five seconds. In addition, residual and repellent effects of Neemseto for adult mites consisted of using leaf discs dipped into the dilutions for five seconds. The toxicity of Neemseto on eggs and adults was greater for T. urticae compared to the toxicity observed for the predatory mites. Neemseto was repellent for T. urticae and E. alatus when tested at the concentrations of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0%, and did not affect P. macropilis. Neemseto using all concentrations, while for the predatory mites significant reduction of mite fecundity was only observed at the largest concentrations reduced the fecundity of T. urticae significantly. So Neemseto, among tested neem formulations, performed better against the twospotted spider mite and exhibited relatively low impact against the predatory mites studied.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a biologia e as exigências térmicas de Trichogramma pratissolii Querino & Zucchi em Anagasta kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) e Corcyra cephalonica Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), nas temperaturas de 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 e 33ºC. A porcentagem de emergência de T. pratissolii em A. kuehniella foi maior a 27ºC, e em C. cephalonica, foi maior às temperaturas de 24ºC a 30ºC. O limite térmico inferior de desenvolvimento (Tb) e a constante térmica (K) de T. pratissolii foram 12,59ºC (Tb) e 122,85 graus-dias (K) em A. kuehniella e 11,73ºC (Tb) e 139,80 graus-dias (K) em C. cephalonica. Os resultados indicam que ambos hospedeiros A. kuehniella e C. cephalonica podem ser utilizados para criação massal de T. pratissolii. A melhor temperatura para desenvolvimento da forma imatura e para a emergência de T. pratissolii em A. kuehniella foi 27ºC e, em C. cephalonica, na faixa de 24ºC a 30ºC.

The objective of this work was to study the biology and determine the thermal requirements of Trichogramma pratissolii Querino & Zucchi reared on Anagasta kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Corcyra cephalonica Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) at 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33ºC. The highest percentage of emergence of T. pratissolii was obtained at 27ºC on A. kuehniella and from 24ºC to 30ºC on C. cephalonica. The lower threshold temperature (Tb) and the thermal requirement (K) of T. pratissolii were 12.59ºC (Tb) and 122.85 degree-days (K) when reared on A. kuehniella and 11.73ºC (Tb) and 139.80 degree-days (K) on C. cephalonica. These results indicate that both A. kuehniella and C. cephalonica are suitable hosts for T. pratissolii mass rearing. The optimal temperature for the immature development and emergence of T. pratissolii on A. kuehniella was 27ºC and 24ºC to 30ºC on C. cephalonica.

Inseticidas químicos são amplamente usados para o controle da traça-das-crucíferas, Plutella xylostella (L.). Esta é considerada a principal praga das crucíferas em todo o mundo e o surgimento de resistência de P. xylostella tem sido freqüentemente relatado. Este trabalho investigou as diferentes interações dos fungos Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. e Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. com o parasitóide de larva-pupa Oomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) sobre larvas de P. xylostella. O experimento foi conduzido à temperatura de 26 ± 1°C, UR de 75 ± 5% e fotofase de 12h, empregando-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado, constando de oito tratamentos com seis repetições cada. Foram utilizados os isolados E9 de M. anisopliae e ESALQ 447 de B. bassiana, na concentração de 10(7) conídios ml-1. Os resultados mostram que M. anisopliae e B. bassiana reduziram o parasitismo de P. xylostella por O. sokolowskii . Por outro lado, efeitos aditivos no controle de P. xylostella foram evidenciados nas diferentes combinações dos fungos com o parasitóide, exceto para B. bassiana quando pulverizado 24h antes da exposição a O. sokolowskii. Os fungos M. anisopliae e B. bassiana foram mais eficientes quando aplicados após a exposição das larvas ao parasitóide, e a eficiência de O. sokolowskii foi influenciada negativamente pela presença dos fungos independente da combinação. A associação dos fungos com o parasitóide apresentam potencial para serem testados em campo, objetivando o controle de P. xylostella bem como favorecer economicamente o sistema produtivo das brássicas.

Chemical insecticides are broadly applied to control diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). Diamondback moth is a major pest of cruciferous worldwide, and resistance of this pest to insecticide has been often reported. Thus, this research investigated the interactions among the fungi Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok., Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., and the larval-pupal parasitoid Oomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) before and after application of the fungi on DBM larvae offered to the parasitoid. The experiment was carried out at 26 ± 1ºC, 75 ± 5% RH and 12h photophase using a completely randomized design, with eight treatments with six replications each. The isolates E9 of M. anisopliae and ESALQ 447 of B. bassiana, were used at the concentration of 10(7) conidia ml-1. The results showed that M. anisopliae and B. bassiana reduced the parasitism of P. xylostella by O. sokolowskii. Additive effects were found on the mortality of P. xylostella with the different combinations among the fungi and parasitoid, except for the treatment B. bassiana inoculated 24h before exposition of the larvae to O. sokolowskii. The isolates were more efficacious when applied after exposition of the larvae to the parasitoid. The efficiency of O. sokolowskii was negatively influenced by the presence of the fungi, mainly when the fungi were applied 24h before diamondback's larvae were exposed to the parasitoid. The association of the fungi with the parasitoid presents potential to be tested in field. The use of these natural enemies in the integrated management of P. xylostella may economically improve the cabbage productive system, especially for organic farming.

Avaliou-se a ocorrência do ácaro vermelho do tomateiro (Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard) e de ácaros predadores em quatro das espécies mais abundantes de solanáceas nativas do litoral de Pernambuco. Foram feitas coletas mensais de amostras de plantas de meados de setembro de 2002 a fins de maio de 2003, nos municípios de Aliança, Carpina, Camaragibe, Goiana, Igarassu e Recife. Foram encontrados 5.485 ácaros pertencentes a mais de 27 espécies, das quais as mais numerosas foram as espécies fitófagas T. evansi e Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Tenuipalpidae), e as espécies predadoras Asca sp. (Ascidae), Phytoseius guianensis De Leon e Paraphytoseius orientalis (Narayanan, Kaur & Ghai) (ambos Phytoseiidae). Índices de associação negativos foram determinados entre T. evansi e quatro espécies de fitoseídeos predadores [as três mais numerosas encontradas neste estudo assim como Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks)]. Foram também realizados testes em laboratório para se avaliar a aceitação de Tetranychus urticae Koch e T. evansi como presas àqueles predadores. Apenas P. macropilis sobreviveu e ovipositou adequadamente quando alimentado com T. urticae. Embora conseguissem se manter vivos por alguns dias quando alimentados com T. evansi, os níveis de reprodução dos quatro predadores foram muito baixos. Esses resultados indicam que embora encontrados comumente sobre solanáceas no campo, aqueles predadores alimentam-se muito pouco ou não se alimentam de T. evansi na natureza.

The occurrence of the tomato red spider mite (Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard) and predatory mites on four of the most abundant native solanaceous plants in coastal Pernambuco, Brazil, was evaluated. Monthly samples were collected from mid September 2002 to late May 2003 in Aliança, Carpina, Camaragibe, Goiana, Igarassu and Recife. A total of 5,485 mites of more than 27 species were found, of which the most common were the phytophagous species T. evansi and Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Tenuipalpidae), and the predaceous species Asca sp. (Ascidae), Phytoseius guianensis De Leon and Paraphytoseius orientalis (Narayanan, Kaur & Ghai) (both Phytoseiidae). Negative indexes of association were determined between T. evansi and each of four species of predaceous phytoseiids [i.e., the three most numerous species found in this study as well as Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks)]. Laboratory tests were also conducted to evaluate the acceptability of Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. evansi as prey by the four predatory species. Only P. macropilis survived and oviposited well when fed T. urticae. Although they were able to remain alive for some days when fed T. evansi, the reproduction levels of the four predator species were very low. These results suggest that despite being commonly found on solanaceous plants in the field, these predators feed very little or do not feed at all on T. evansi in nature.

Estudaram-se as exigências térmicas de Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) alimentado com Tetranychus urticae Koch em cinco temperaturas constantes (18, 20, 23, 26 e 30°C), e determinou-se o efeito de três temperaturas constantes (20, 23 e 26°C) sobre os parâmetros biológicos da fase adulta do ácaro. Os dados foram utilizados para construir tabelas de vida de fertilidade. Os estágios de ovo, larva, protoninfa, deutoninfa e período de ovo-adulto apresentaram temperaturas base de 12,6; 13,1; 11,6; 13,4 e 12,7°C, respectivamente, e constantes térmicas de 26,65; 10,27; 16,04; 13,31 e 66,04 GD, respectivamente. A duração média da geração (T) variou de 24,3 a 18,5 dias entre as temperaturas de 20°C e 26°C. A maior taxa líquida de reprodução (R0 = 35,3) e a maior capacidade intrínseca de aumento populacional (r m = 0,19) foram obtidas a 23ºC. A maior fecundidade foi verificada a 26ºC.

Thermal requirements of Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) fed with Tetranychus urticae Koch at five constant temperatures (18, 20, 23, 26 and 30°C), and the effect of three constant temperatures (20, 23 and 26°C) on the adult stage were studied. The data were used to produce the fertility life tables. The stages of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph and adult egg corresponded to the temperature thresholds of 12.6, 13.1, 11.6, 13.4 and 12.7°C, respectively, and thermal constants of 26.65, 10.27, 16.04, 13.31 and 66.04 DD, respectively. The average duration of a generation (T) varied from 24.3 to 18.5 days at the temperatures from 20°C to 26°C. The highest net reproduction (R0 = 35,3) and the intrinsic rate of increase (r m = 0,19) were obtained at 23ºC. The highest fecundity rate was registered at 26ºC.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a acarofauna em grãos de feijão, milho e ração em supermercados e feiras livres da cidade do Recife, PE. Em cada estabelecimento foi coletada uma amostra de 500 g de cada grão e ração, em intervalos bimensais, no período de agosto/2002 a junho/2003. Cada amostra foi dividida em duas sub-amostras de 250 g. Uma delas foi submetida à extração de ácaros logo após a coleta e a outra foi incubada a 26ºC e umidade relativa de 78% por 30 dias. Ao final desse período a segunda sub-amostra foi processada da mesma forma que a primeira. Os ácaros foram montados em lâminas para microscopia em meio de Hoyer e identificados pelo menos até o nível de gênero. Foram coletados 11.956 ácaros pertencentes às famílias Acaridae, Ebertiidae, Glycyphagidae, Cheyletidae, Stigmaeidae, Pyemotidae, Tarsonemidae, Tydeidae, Cunaxidae, Ameroseiidae, Ascidae e Phytoseiidae. Dentre os ácaros primários, a espécie Suidasia medanensis Oudemans foi a predominante no levantamento (3.035 indivíduos), seguida de Caloglyphus hughesi (Samsinak) (436 indivíduos). Metapronematus sp. foi predominante (3.417 indivíduos), dentre os ácaros secundários, seguido de Tarsonemus granarius Lindquist (3.003). O número de ácaros coletados nas amostras incubadas foi sempre superior em relação às amostras não incubadas, assim como nas amostras de feira livre em relação às de supermercado.

The mite fauna was assessed in bean, maize and pet food in supermarkets and markets in Recife, PE, Brazil. A 500 g sample of each grain and food was collected in each establishment at two weekly intervals, from August 2002 to June 2003. The sample was divided into two 250 g sub-samples. One of them was submitted to spider mite evaluation shortly after collection and the other was incubated at 26ºC and 78% humidity for 30 days. At the end of this period the second sub-sample was processed in the same way as the first. The spider mites were mounted on slides for microscopy in Hoyer medium and identified at least at genus level. Eleven thousand nine hundred and fifty-six spider mites were collected belonging to the Acaridae, Ebertiidae, Glycyphagidae, Cheyletidae, Stigmaeidae, Pyemotidae, Tarsonemidae, Tydeidae, Cunaxidae, Ameroseiidae, Ascidae e Phytoseiidae families. Among the primary spider mites the Suidasia medanensis Oudemans species was predominant in the survey (3,035 individuals) followed by Caloglyphus hughesi (Samsinak) (436 individuals). Metapronematus sp. was predominant (3,417 individuals) among the secondary spider mites followed by Tarsonemus granarius Lindquist (3,003). The number of mites collected in the incubated samples was always greater compared to the non-incubated samples in both the market and supermarket samples.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial de desenvolvimento e reprodução de Eutetranychus banksi (McGregor) em algumas espécies de fruteiras tropicais economicamente importantes. Os ácaros foram coletados em folhas de mamoeiro (Carica papaya L.), no campus da UFRPE e criados no laboratório, em arenas constituídas por discos de folha dessa fruteira. O experimento foi instalado com quatro tratamentos, representados pelos cultivares 011-BPA e 014-CPA de acerola (Malpighia emarginata A.DC.), mamão "Sunrise Solo" e laranja lima (Citrus sp.). Fêmeas adultas da criação foram confinadas durante 12h em arenas para oviposição. Avaliou-se a duração e a sobrevivência dos estágios imaturos em intervalos de 12h. Após a emergência, os adultos foram acasalados, sendo cada casal confinado em uma arena constituída por discos de folha. A longevidade e a fecundidade foram avaliadas a cada 24h. Com os resultados obtidos foi construída uma tabela de vida de fertilidade. O tempo de desenvolvimento de E. banksi foi menor no mamoeiro. Não houve diferença na longevidade de fêmeas nas diferentes fruteiras estudadas. A fecundidade de E. banksi foi maior no mamoeiro, diferindo das duas cultivares de acerola e laranja lima. A taxa líquida de reprodução, capacidade de aumento e razão finita de aumento foram maiores no mamoeiro. O menor tempo de desenvolvimento e maior fecundidade de E. banksi nessa fruteira podem ter ocorrido pelo fato de a população de ácaros ter sido coletada originalmente na mesma espécie vegetal.

The objective of this research was to determine the potential development and reproduction of Eutetranchus banski (McGregor) in some economically important species of tropical fruit tree. The mites were collected from papaya tree (Carica papaya L.), in the UFRPE Campus and reared in the laboratory, in arenas consisted of leaf discs of papaya tree. Four host species were tryied: cultivars 011-BPA and 014-CPA of Barbado's cherry (Malpighia emarginata A.DC.), papaya tree "Sunrise Solo" and orange lime (Citrus sp.). Adult females were confined during 12h in arenas for oviposition and the duration and survival of the immature stages were evaluated at 12h intervals. After the emergence, the adults were mated and each couple was confined in one leaf disc's arena. Longevity and fecundity were evaluated at each 24h. The results originated a fertility life table. The development time of E. banski was shorter in papaya tree. There was no difference in the females longevity in the different fruit trees studied. The fecundity of E. banski was higher in papaya tree, different from Barbado's cherry and lime orange. The net reproduction rates (Ro), the finite ratio of increase (l) and the increase capacity were higher in papaya tree. The lowest development period and higher fecundity of E. banski in papaya tree were possibly due to the fact that the mite population was originated from the same plant species.

Este trabalho investigou o efeito de seis plantas daninhas [Ageratum conyzoides L., Amaranthus hybridus L., Bidens pilosa L., Desmodium tortuosum (Sw.), Euphorbia heterophylla L., Ricinus communis L.] e do algodoeiro Gossypium hirsutum L cv. CNPA Precoce 1, na biologia de Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas). Ovosdo predador foram fixados às plantas e, posteriormente, os insetos foram alimentados com pupas de Tenebrio molitor (L.) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) até a morte. Para avaliar a preferência para oviposição, fêmeas acasaladas foram confinadas em gaiolas contendo plantas daninhas e algodoeiro, observando-se a seleção da planta para oviposição através do número de posturas e ovos. D. tortuosum propiciou o mais rápido desenvolvimento ninfal de P. nigrispinus. A viabilidade da fase ninfal não foi afetada em relação à espécie de planta e fêmeas produzidas em R. communis foram mais leves em relação às produzidas em G. hirsutum. Fêmeas mantidas em A. conyzoides tiveram maior fecundidade, enquanto aquelas mantidas em D. tortuosum, E. heterophylla e R. communis apresentaram a menor fecundidade. A taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro) e o tempo médio da geração (T) de P. nigrispinus foram maiores em A. conyzoides e menores em R. communis. A taxa intrínseca de crescimento populacional (r m) e a razão finita de crescimento (lambda) foram maiores em B. pilosa e menores em G. hirsutum. Dentre as plantas estudadas P. nigrispinus preferiu ovipositar em A. hybridus e B. pilosa. Os resultados sugerem que plantas daninhas como A. conyzoides, B. pilosa e A. hybridus podem beneficiar a colonização e manutenção de P. nigrispinus no agroecossistema algodoeiro por fitofagia.

This study investigated the effects of six weeds [Amaranthus hybridus L., Desmodium tortuosum (Sw.), Euphorbia heterophylla L., Ageratum conyzoides L., Bidens pilosa L., Ricinus communis L.] and the cotton plant Gossypium hirsutum L. CNPA Precocious 1 on Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) life history characteristics and oviposition behavior. The study begun with P. nigrispinus eggs placed on plants and caged throughout up to female death. Egg production and selected plant for oviposition by P. nigrispinus were investigated caging mated females on weeds and cotton plants simultaneously. Nymphal development of P. nigrispinus was shorter on D. tortuosum and longer on A. hybridus. Nymphal viability was not affected by any species of plant studied. Nymphs reared on R. communis produced females weighting less compared to the other plant species. The weed A. conyzoides promoted higher female fecundity compared to those females reared on D. tortuosum, E. heterophylla and R. communis. The demographic parameters net reproductive rate (Ro) and mean generation time (T) of P. nigrispinus were higher for females reared on A. conyzoides, while the intrinsic rate of population increase (r m) and finite rate of increase (lambda) suggest that better performance of the predator will be yielded on B. pilosa. The weed plants A. hybridus and B. pilosa were significantly preferred by P. nigrispinus females to lay eggs. These results suggest that the weeds A. conyzoides, B. pilosa and A. hybridus can benefit the colonization and maintenance of P. nigrispinus in the cotton ecosystem by phytophagy.

A diversidade de ácaros na cultura da aceroleira foi avaliada na Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco em Recife, PE. As coletas foram realizadas no banco de germoplasma da aceroleira entre maio de 2001 e março de 2002. Em cada coleta foram amostradas 12 plantas, tomando-se aleatoriamente oito ramos por planta. Em cada ramo coletou-se o broto apical e oito folhas medianas e basais. Em seguida, as amostras foram levadas ao laboratório e os ácaros coletados, e montados em lâmina para microscopia e identificados. Foram coletados 2.233 ácaros de 32 espécies pertencentes a 29 gêneros e 11 famílias. Do total de ácaros coletados 4,5% pertenceram à ordem Acaridida, 79,4% à ordem Actinedida, 6,7% à ordem Gamasida e 9,4% à ordem Oribatida. A maioria dos espécimes coletados é fitófaga. A família Eriophyidae representou 59,2% dos ácaros coletados, todos pertencentes ao gênero Floracarus. A famíliaTenuipalpidae representou 12,5% dos ácaros. As espécies identificadas foram Brevipalpus californicus (Banks), com 4,7% e Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes), com 7,8%. Dentre os ácaros predadores, os fitoseídeos foram os mais freqüentes, representando 6,4% dos ácaros coletados, dos quais 2,8% foram identificados como Amblyseius aerialis (Muma), 2,1% como Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma e 1,2% como Euseius alatus DeLeon. Dentre as 32 espécies de ácaros coletadas 12 são predadoras, seis são provavelmente micófagas e apenas quatro são fitófagas. Destas últimas nenhuma aparentemente causa dano econômico o que indica que provavelmente os ácaros que ocorrem nessa Malpighiaceae estão em equilíbrio.

The mite diversity in the Barbados Cherry was evaluated at the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, in Recife, Pernambuco State. The samples were done in the germ plasm bank of the plant between May 2001 and March 2002. In each sample eight aleatory branches from each individual of twelve plants were surveyed. From each branch the apical bud and eight leaves from median and basal positions were collected. In the laboratory the mites were collected, mounted in histological laminas for microscopy, and identified. We founded 2.233 mites from 32 species owing to 29 genus and 11 families. From all species 4.5% belonged to the Acaridida, 79.4% to the Actinedida, 6.7% to the Gamasida and 9.4% to the Oribatida Orders. The majority of the collected specimens are phytophagous. The Eriophyidae family represented 59.2% from all mites collected. All sampled specimens owed to genus Floracarus. The Tenuipalpidae family represented 12.5% from all ácaros. The determined species were Brevipalpus californicus (Banks), with 4.7% and Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) with 7.8%. Among the predaceous mites the phytoseids were more frequent, representing 6.4% from the collected mites, from which 2.8% were identified as Amblyseius aerialis (Muma), 2.1% as Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma and 1.2% as Euseius alatus DeLeon. Among the 32 collected species, 12 are predator mites, six probably are micophagous and only four are phytophagous. These last ones, seemingly do not provoke economic damage indicating that the mites that occur in the Malpighiaceae family may be in equilibrium.

Os ácaros Eriophyoidea estão comumente associados a palmeiras, entretanto poucas espécies têm sido relatadas causando danos econômicos nessas plantas. Uma exceção é Retracrus johnstoni Keifer, praga de Bactris gasipaes Kunth, planta utilizada na produção de palmito. R. johnstoni tem sido encontrado em grande número de arecáceas no Sudeste do Brasil. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a biologia deste ácaro em laboratório. Seções de folhas da palmeira Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman com cerca de 15 folíolos foram conservadas mantendo suas bases em água destilada. Aproximadamente 20 adultos de R. johnstoni foram transferidos para cada folíolo para oviposição. Após 24h, os ácaros foram removidos, deixando-se apenas um ovo por folíolo. Diariamente os ovos e os estágios subseqüentes foram examinados para determinação do ciclo de vida, taxa de oviposição e sobrevivência. Cada estágio imaturo de R. johnstoni teve duração de aproximadamente sete dias, totalizando aproximadamente 20,5 dias para o desenvolvimento de ovo a adulto. A razão sexual foi de aproximadamente duas fêmeas para cada macho. A fecundidade total foi de cinco ovos por fêmea. Formas imaturas e adultos eram cobertos por uma camada de material branco secretado por eles. O espermatóforo de R. johnstoni é semelhante ao de outras espécies da superfamília, e consiste em uma cabeça de aproximadamente 6 x 6 µm e uma base de aproximadamente 6 µm de comprimento. Os danos apresentam-se como manchas escuras na superfície inferior e manchas amareladas nas regiões correspondentes da superfície. As manchas foliares aumentam progressivamente, coalescem e a folha morre e cai prematuramente.

Eriophyoid mites are commonly associated to palm trees, although few of them have been reported causing economic damage to those plants. One exception is Retracrus johnstoni Keifer, a pest of Bactris gasipaes Kunth, plant used for palm heart production. R. jonhstoni is frequently found in large numbers on Arecaceae in southeast Brazil. The biology of this mite was studied under laboratory condition. Sections of leaves of the palm tree Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman, with ca. 15 leaflets, were kept alive by maintaining their bases in distilled water. Ca. 20 field collected adults of R. johnstoni were transferred onto each leaflet for oviposition. After 24h, mites were removed, leaving only one egg laid. Once a day, the eggs and the subsequent stages were examined to determine the life cycle, oviposition rate and survivorship. Each immature stage of R. johnstoni lasted ca. seven days, corresponding to ca. 20.5 days for immature development. The sex ratio was ca. two females per male. Total fecundity was slightly over five eggs per female. Immature and adult mites secreted a layer of white material, which covered their bodies. Spermatophores of R. johnstoni resemble those of other species in the same superfamily, and consist of a head of ca. 6 x 6 µm onto a base ca. 6 µm long. Leaflets show dark spots on the lower surface and yellowish spots on the corresponding regions of the upper surface. Leaf spots become progressively larger and coalescent, and the leaf dies and falls prematurely.

O presente trabalho consistiu na avaliação da compatibilidade reprodutiva entre duas populações de ácaros predadores preliminarmente identificadas como Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma, obtidas de uma plantação comercial de Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck. (Rutaceae) e de plantas de Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman (Arecaceae) encontradas em uma área de floresta. Os resultados deste estudo poderiam indicar a possibilidade de que estas últimas plantas pudessem servir de reservatório de I. zuluagai às primeiras. As colônias de I. zuluagai foram mantidas em laboratório através do método descrito por Reis et al. (1988), a 25±1ºC, 85±5% de U.R. e 12h de fotofase. A compatibilidade reprodutiva foi avaliada através de cruzamentos e retrocruzamentos entre ácaros de cada colônia e observações da fecundidade dos ácaros durante 10 dias. Cruzamentos heterogâmicos e retrocruzamentos produziram descendentes férteis em proporções comparáveis aos cruzamentos homogâmicos. Os resultados indicam que as populações testadas pertencem à mesma espécie, o que sugere um possível papel positivo de S. romanzoffiana como reservatório de I. zuluagai, a partir da qual o predador eventualmente poderia recolonizar áreas de plantas cultivadas.

The present work consisted of an evaluation of the reproductive compatibility between two populations of a predatory mite preliminarily identified as Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma, obtained from a commercial plantation of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck. (Rutaceae) and from Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman (Arecaceae) found in a forest area. The results of this study could indicate the possibility that the latter system could serve as a reservoir of I. zuluagai to the former. The colonies of I. zuluagai were maintained in a laboratory using the method described by Reis et al. (1988), at 25±1ºC, 85±5% of R.H. and 12h light: 12h dark. The reproductive compatibility was evaluated through crosses and back-crosses between mites of each colony and observations on their fecundity during 10 days. The heterogamic crosses and the back-crosses resulted in fertile progeny in proportions comparable to homogamic crosses. These results indicate that both tested populations belong to the same species, which suggest a possible positive role of S. romanzoffiana as reservoir of I. zuluagai, from which the predator could eventually re-colonize patches of cultivated plants.
