ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing 50% of the true protein from soybean meal with extruded urea on the performance and carcass characteristics of lambs finished on pasture. Twenty lambs with initial weight of 29.9±6.2kg and 5 months of age, distributed in two treatments in blocks at random, were kept in pastures of Urochloa spp. Supplemented with 2% of body weight (BW). The treatments consisted of supplements containing soybean meal as the only true protein source (control), or extruded urea replacing 50% of soybean meal (NPN treatment). There was no effect of treatment on total supplement intake. There were differences in average daily gain (242.1 vs. 264.6g/day), slaughter weight (41.9 vs. 45.0kg) and carcass weight (18.9 vs. 20.1kg). There was no effect of the treatment on the final body condition score, hot carcass yield, carcass length, breast depth, subcutaneous fat thickness or rib eye area. The group of animals that received extruded urea showed superior carcass finishing characteristics (99.0% vs. 66.0%), maturity (22.0% vs. 0.0%), marbling (55.0% vs. 33.0%), meat texture (44.0% vs. 33.0%) and fat (66.0% vs. 22.0%). There were no significant effects on tenderness (7.5kg/f) or flesh color (L* = 33.2; a* = 16.2; b* = 8.3). There were no significant changes in the biochemical profile of the animals' blood during the experiment for both treatments. The replacement of 50% of protein from soybean meal by the extruded urea as NPN source in the supplement for lambs finished in Urochloa spp pastures provides better animal performance and qualitative characteristics of meat, without altering quantitative carcass characteristics.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos da substituição de 50% da proteína verdadeira do farelo de soja por ureia extrusada sobre o desempenho e as características de carcaça de cordeiros terminados em pasto. Vinte cordeiros de 29,9±6,2kg de peso inicial e com cinco meses de idade, distribuídos em dois tratamentos em blocos ao acaso, foram mantidos em pastagens de Urochloa spp. suplementado com 2% do peso vivo (PV). Os tratamentos consistiram em suplementos contendo farelo de soja como única fonte de proteína verdadeira (controle), ou ureia extrusada em substituição a 50% do farelo de soja (tratamento NPN). Não houve efeito do tratamento na ingestão total de suplemento. Houve diferenças no ganho médio diário (242,1 vs. 264,6 g/dia), no peso ao abate (41,9 vs. 45,0kg) e no peso da carcaça (18,9 vs. 20,1kg). Não houve efeito do tratamento sobre escore de condição corporal final, rendimento de carcaça quente, comprimento de carcaça, profundidade do peito, espessura de gordura subcutânea ou área de olho de lombo. O grupo de animais que recebeu ureia extrusada apresentou características superiores de acabamento de carcaça (99,0% vs. 66,0%), maturidade (22,0% vs. 0,0%), marmoreio (55,0% vs. 33,0%), textura da carne (44,0% vs. 33,0 %) e gordura (66,0% vs. 22,0%). Não houve efeitos significativos na maciez (7,5 kg/f) nem na cor da carne (L * = 33,2; a * = 16,2; b * = 8,3). Não houve mudanças significativas no perfil bioquímico do sangue dos animais durante o experimento para ambos os tratamentos. A substituição de 50% da proteína do farelo de soja pela ureia extrusada como fonte de NPN no suplemento para cordeiros terminados em pastagem de Urochloa spp. Proporciona melhor desempenho animal e características qualitativas da carne, sem alterar as características quantitativas da carcaça.

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of vitamin E and selenium on performance, viability, productive efficiency, and yields of carcass, major cuts, and organs of broilers from 22 to 42 days submitted to cyclic-heat stress. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement with two levels of selenium (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg) and three levels of vitamin E (300, 400, and 500 mg/kg), plus a control treatment. Animals were submitted to a natural condition of high cyclic temperature. Organic selenium levels of 0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg associated with 300, 400, and 500 mg/kg of vitamin E were tested. The level of vitamin E did not affect the performance or production efficiency of broilers in the period from 22 to 33 days and 22 to 42 days. However, the selenium inclusion level of 0.3 mg/kg improved the viability in both phases. The yields of carcass, major cuts, intestine, and heart were not influenced by the levels of selenium and vitamin E, whereas abdominal fat for the selenium level 0.1 mg/kg decreased linearly with the inclusion in vitamin E.

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between leptin gene polymorphism (LEP), specifically exon 2, and microsatellite of the growth hormone receptor (GHR-SSR) with the growth characteristics of Anglo-Nubian and Boer goats to identify useful markers for selecting animals with high genetic merit. The Toolkit program was used for obtaining the allele frequencies and heterozygosity. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test was performed with GENEPOP software. Markers were in desequilibrium in all populations studied. Observed heterozygosity values for LEP were greater than expected heterozygosity. All animals showed the same electrophoretic pattern with two alleles (150 and 152 bp). On GHR locus was detected five alleles ranging from 90 to 125 bp. Birth weight (BW) and weaning weight (PD) were used to evaluate the influence of polymorphic fragments on the animal growth. They were analyzed by GLM procedure of SAS software. The genotypes showed a significant effect on birth (BW) and weaning weight (PD). It is necessary to increase the number of samples to confirm the relationship among GHR and leptina polymorphic fragments GHR and growth characteristics.

Objetivou-se estudar a relação entre o polimorfismo no gene da leptina (LEP), especificamente o éxon 2, e o microssatélite do receptor do hormônio do crescimento (SSR-GHR) com as características de crescimento em animais das raças Anglo-Nubiana e Boer, a fim de identificar marcadores que possam ser úteis na seleção desses animais da espécie caprina de elevado mérito genético. Foram obtidas as frequências alélicas e heterozigosidade com auxílio do programa Toolkit. O teste para o equilíbrio de Hardy-Weinberg foi feito com auxílio do GENEPOP, no qual os marcadores se mostraram em desequilíbrio para as populações. Para a LEP os valores de heterozigosidade observada foram bem maiores do que os esperados e todos os animais apresentaram o mesmo padrão eletroforétrico com dois alelos (150 e 152 pb). No loco do GHR observou-se cinco alelos com tamanho variando de 90 a 125 pb. Para verificar a influência dos genótipos dos fragmentos polimórficos do GHR e da leptina sobre o desenvolvimento dos animais foram utilizados os pesos ao nascer (PN) e ao desmame (PD), para os quais foi feito análise de variância e teste de médias com auxílio do procedimento GLM do programa SAS. Observouse efeito significativo dos genótipos sobre os pesos ao nascer (PN) e à desmame (PD). Sugerese, o estudo destes polimorfismos em maior número de animais para confirmação do efeito sobre características de crescimento.

Descreveu-se a influência do relevo, da precipitação, da temperatura e da sazonalidade na distribuição espacial da raiva bovina. Para a realização dessa análise, foi construído um banco geográfico de dados que possibilitou a geração de uma função kernel, com base no somatório anual dos diagnósticos de raiva laboratorialmente positivos entre 1992 e 2003, bem como a verificação da sua relação com as demais variáveis. Constatou-se que a região com relevo montanhoso, maiores índices pluviométricos e temperatura mais amena do planalto atlântico e da província costeira correspondeu às áreas com maior densidade da função, contrapondo-se à região do planalto ocidental com menores índices pluviométricos e áreas mais quentes. Não se observou, no estado, relação entre sazonalidade e raiva bovina no período estudado. A região plana da depressão periférica e o eixo de conurbação São Paulo-Campinas são óbices que dividem, respectivamente, a enfermidade entre as regiões leste-oeste e leste-sul do estado.

The influences of relief, precipitation, temperature, and seasonally was evaluated on the cattle rabies spatial distribution in the State of São Paulo. In that way, a Geographic Data Bank was developed in order to create a kernel function with the cases of cattle rabies from 1992 to 2003 and its relation with other variables. Results showed that the rainy hilly areas with low temperature in the "Planalto Atlântico" and "Província Costeira" were linked to areas with the higher density of the function in opposite to the plane areas of the "Planalto Ocidental" with low rainy index and high temperatures. There were no relations between seasonality and cattle rabies in the State of São Paulo. The flat region of the "Depressão Periférica" and urban area between São Paulo and Campinas are barriers that determine the disease occurrence in East-West and East-South regions of the State.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever a influência dos mosaicos de uso e de cobertura da terra na distribuição espacial da raiva bovina na região de maior incidência do Estado de São Paulo, entre 1992 e 2003. Geotecnologias foram utilizadas para gerar três camadas sobrepostas: a enfermidade caracterizada por uma função kernel, os tipos de uso e classes de cobertura da terra obtidos por classificação de imagens de satélites e a altitude. A enfermidade esteve fortemente moldada pelas áreas de vegetação rasteira (pastagens). O relevo pareceu formar os mosaicos de uso e cobertura da terra, os quais acabaram determinando os locais de grassamento ou não da enfermidade. Grandes áreas contínuas do mesmo tipo de uso e classe de cobertura da terra tenderam a ser protetoras da raiva bovina, ou favorecedoras em áreas vizinhas.

The influence of the mosaics of land use and land cover in the spatial distribution of cattle rabies was described in the major incidence region of the State of Sao Paulo, from 1992 to 2003. Geotechnologies were used to build three layers: the disease established by a kernel function, the land use and land cover obtained by satellite images classification, and the altitude. The disease was hardly shaped by grasslands. The relief seems to form the land use and land cover, which determine the regions for the occurrence or not of the disease. Large continuous areas of the same land use and land cover tend to be a protection to cattle rabies or to favor it in the neighborhood areas.
