Resumo: Objetivo O objetivo desse estudo foi determinar a diversidade de Trichoptera em riachos e o efeito das variáveis ambientais e posição geográfica na diversidade alfa e beta em riachos naturais e rurais. Métodos Coletamos larvas de Trichoptera com um amostrador Surber em 12 riachos subtropicais de pequena ordem (seis riachos com ausência aparente de distúrbios antrópicos e seis riachos com atividades rurais na área de drenagem) e quantificamos as variáveis limnológicas. Avaliamos os efeitos da variabilidade ambiental na dissimilaridade das assembleias e calculamos a contribuição da diversidade alfa e beta nos riachos. Resultados Coletamos um total de 1264 larvas de Trichoptera distribuidas em 17 gêneros e 11 famílias. Os gêneros Phylloicus e Smicridea foram encontramos em praticamente todos os riachos. Observamos um efeito positivo da variabilidade ambiental na variabilidade biológica, mas não da posição geográfica. A variabilidade ambiental foi gerada basicamente pela influência de maiores concentrações de carbono orgânico dissolvido e nutrientes. Observamos maior contribuição da diversidade alfa nas assembleias de Trichoptera nos riachos naturais, e da diversidade beta nos riachos rurais. Conclusões Nossos resultados demonstram que a variabilidade de Trichoptera é afetada por características ambientais, e não pela posição geográfica.

Abstract: Aim The aim of this study was to determine the diversity of Trichoptera in subtropical streams and the effects of environmental variables and geographical position on alpha and beta diversity in natural and rural streams. Methods We collected Trichoptera with a Surber sampler in 12 small order subtropical streams (six streams with apparent absence of anthropic disturbance and six streams with rural activity in their drainage areas) and measured limnological variables. We evaluated the effects of environmental variability and geographical distance on the dissimilarity of the assemblage and calculated the contribution of alpha and beta diversity for each stream. Results We collected a total of 1,264 Trichoptera larvae distributed in 17 genera and 11 families. The genera Phylloicus and Smicridea were found in almost all streams. We observed a positive effect of environmental variability on biological variability but not of geographical distance. The environmental variability was basically generated by the influence of higher concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and nutrients. We observed the greatest contribution of the alpha diversity of the Trichoptera assemblages in natural streams and of beta diversity in the rural streams. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that the variability of Trichoptera is affected by environmental characteristics, but not by geographical position.

Resumo As formigas compreendem um táxon muito diverso de insetos, apresentam elevada riqueza e são ecologicamente importantes nos diferentes ecossistemas terrestres. A riqueza e diversidade de formigas tendem a aumentar de acordo com a complexidade dos ambientes no que se refere à vegetação e ao estágio de conservação da biodiversidade. Este estudo visou caracterizar as assembleias de formigas que ocorrem em duas áreas de preservação permanente, descritas como fragmentos de vegetação nativa circundados por lavouras e, dois plantios de eucalipto, cercados por lavouras e pastagens. O estudo foi realizado no município de Frederico Westphalen (27°21′27″; 53°23′ 40″O), noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul. Foram utilizadas 10 armadilhas de queda (pitfall) e 20 iscas, 10 de sardinha e 10 de glicose em cada área. A riqueza foi definida como o número de espécies que ocorreram em cada uma das amostras e foi comparada por meio de análise de rarefação baseadas no número de ocorrências. A relação entre as espécies de formigas e os diferentes ambientes foi verificada através da Análise de Componentes Principais (PCA). A riqueza de formigas amostrada foi de 71 espécies, pertencentes a 19 gêneros, cinco subfamílias e, sete espécies ocorreram nos quatro ambientes amostrados. A subfamília Myrmicinae e os gêneros Pheidole e Camponotus foram os mais ricos no estudo. Observou-se diferença significativa quanto à riqueza, abundância e a composição das assembleias de formigas entre os ambientes amostrados. Os resultados apontam diferenças entre as assembleias de formigas dos fragmentos florestais e das plantações de eucalipto, e acrescentam informações acerca da biodiversidade da região do estudo.

Abstract The ants comprise a very diverse taxon of insects, present high richness and are ecologically important in the different terrestrial ecosystems. The richness and diversity of ants tend to increase according to the complexity of the environments in terms of vegetation and the stage of biodiversity conservation. This study aimed at inventorying and characterizing ant assemblages that occur in two permanent preservation areas, characterized as fragments of native vegetation surrounded by crops, and two eucalyptus plantations, surrounded by crops and pastures. The study was carried out in the municipality of Frederico Westphalen (27 ° 21 ‘27 “, 53 ° 23’ 40” W), located in the northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul state. Ten pitfall traps and 20 baits, 10 sardines and 10 glucose ones were used in each area. The richness was defined as the number of species that occurred in each sample and was compared by means of rarefaction analysis based on the number of occurrences. The relationship between the ant species and the different environments was verified through a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The richness of ants was 71 species, belonging to 19 genera and five subfamilies. Seven species occurred in four sampled environments. The subfamily Myrmicinae and the genera Pheidole and Camponotus were the richest ones in the study. A significant difference was observed regarding the richness, abundance and composition of ant assemblages among the sampled environments. A total of 76.4% of the variation in the occurrence of ants, according to the environments sampled, was explained by the first two components of the PCA. The results point out differences between ant assemblages from forest fragments and those from eucalyptus plantations. They add information about the biodiversity of the study region.

Para inferir sobre el conocimiento acumulado de la diversidad de mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea, Hesperioidea) de Rio Grande do Sul, fueron consultados los estudios relacionados con bionomía, taxonomía e inventarios forestales; se encontraron un total de 832 especies y subespecies de mariposas. Después de 1970, los artículos publicados que tratan de mariposas aumentaron casi exponencialmente, y los inventarios de mariposas desde 1990, simultáneamente, también muestran un crecimiento. La familia más rica fue Hesperiidae con 357 (42,90%) especies y subespecies, seguido por Nymphalidae con 227 (27,28%), Lycaenidae con 94 (1l,30%), Riodinidae con 80 (9,62%), Pieridae con 43 (5,17%) y Papilionidae con 31 (3,73%). Entre las regiones fisiográficas, la Depressao Central presentó 495 (59,50%) especies e subespécies registradas (mayor riqueza) y la Ladera Superior del Nordeste presentó 17 (2,04%) especies y subespecies (menor riqueza). La distribución de inventarios muestra que en Río Grande do Sul aún existen áreas que carecen de información sobre mariposas.

To infer on the accumulated knowledge of butterfly diversity of (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea, Hesperioidea) from Rio Grande do Sul, we consulted studies related to bionomics, taxonomy and forest inventories; a total of 832 species and subspecies of butterflies have been recorded. After of 1970 butterflies studies increased almost exponentially, and the inventory the butterflies from 1990, the same time also showed an increase. Hesperiidae was the richest family, with 357 (42.90%) species and subspecies, followed by Nymphalidae with 227 (27.28%), Lycaenidae with 94 (11.30%), Riodinidae with 80 (9.62%), Pieridae with 43 (5.17%) and Papilionidae with 31 (3.73%). Amongst the physiographic regions, the Depressao Central presented 495 (59.50%) species and subspecies (larger richness) and the Encosta Superior do Nordeste 17 (2.04%) species and subspecies (lower richness). The distribution of inventories shows that there are still areas lacking butterfly data in Rio Grande do Sul.

Foram realizados levantamentos mensais em duas localidades no Município, fragmento da Vila Faguense e do Santuário de Schoenstatt, os quais distam entre si em 1.500 m, entre março de 2005 e abril de 2006. Em 140 horas de amostragem foram registrados 3.123 indivíduos distribuídos em 169 espécies. Nymphalidae foi a família mais amostrada com aproximadamente 53% das espécies registradas. Nove espécies ainda não haviam sido registradas para o Estado. O índice de Diversidade de Shannon-Wiener foi maior no fragmento da Vila Faguense, local menos perturbado. Os índices de dominância de Simpson e Berger-Parker foram mais representativos no Santuário de Schoenstatt, com maior número de espécies abundantes. Foram registradas em Frederico Westphalen 126 (74,55%) espécies acidentais, 25 acessórias (14,80%) e 18 constantes (10,65%).

A systematic survey was carried out in two localities of the Municipal District of Frederico Westphalen, fragment of Villa Faguense and Schoenstatt's Sanctuary, situated 1,500 m apart, from March 2005 to April 2006. In 140 hours of sampling, 3123 individuals, distributed in 169 species, were registered. Nymphalidae was the most sampled with approximately 53% of the recorded species. Nine species sampled were still no registered for the State. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index was higher in fragment of Villa Faguense, place less disturbed. The Simpson and Berger-Parker dominance indexes had been more representative in fragment of Schoenstatt Sanctuary, with higher number of abundant species. Among the species captured 126 (74,55%) are accidental, 25 (14,80%) are accessory and 18 (10,65%) are constant.
