RESUMO: A restauração ecológica tornou-se uma importante atividade complementar para proteger os recursos naturais e conservar a biodiversidade. No entanto, as espécies nativas podem estar a ser utilizadas em programas de restauração de formas que não otimizam as suas características. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a sobrevivência e modelar o desenvolvimento inicial de 15 espécies arbóreas nativas plantadas em linhas de “preenchimento” e “diversidade” na fase de pós-plantio numa experiência de restauração nos subtrópicos da Mata Atlântica Brasileira. Avaliou-se a taxa de sobrevivência (%) um ano após o plantio e o diâmetro do colo (mm), a altura total (m), a área de projeção de copa (m²) e o volume de copa (m³) nos primeiros 48 meses após o plantio. A modelagem de crescimento para cada variável e espécie foi baseada nos modelos matemáticos não lineares: Logístico, Gompertz e Chapman-Richards. A seleção do modelo para cada variável/espécie teve como base o Critério de Informação de Akaike, erro padrão da estimativa e coeficiente de determinação. Os percentuais de sobrevivência mais altos foram para Cordia americana, Gochnatia polymorpha, Inga uruguensis, Peltophorum dubium, Prunus sellowii e Zanthoxylum rhoifolium (91,7%) e para Solanum mauritianum (90,3%). As espécies de crescimento mais rápido, por ordem crescente, foram: Mimosa scabrella, Trema micrantha, Solanum mauritianum e Croton urucurana. Com o conhecimento do potencial de desenvolvimento inicial das espécies, é possível aumentar a diversidade de espécies e funcional do grupo de preenchimento. Não houve um modelo único capaz de descrever todas as variáveis de desenvolvimento analisadas. Foram necessários diferentes modelos para descrever as diferentes características e as diferentes espécies.

ABSTRACT: Ecological restoration has become an important complementary practice to protect natural resources and preserve biodiversity. However, native species may be used in restoration programs in ways that do not optimize their performance. This research evaluated the survival and to model the initial growth of 15 native tree species planted in “filling” and “diversity” lines in the post-planting phase of a restoration experiment in the subtropics of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We measured survival rate (%) one year after planting and collar diameter (mm), total height (m), crown projection area (m²) and crown volume (m³) in the first 48 months after planting. Growth modeling for each variable and species was based on the non-linear mathematical Logistic, Gompertz, and Chapman-Richards models. Model selection for each variable/species was supported by the Akaike Information Criterion, standard error of the estimate, and coefficient of determination. The highest survival rates were reported for Cordia americana, Gochnatia polymorpha, Inga uruguensis, Peltophorum dubium, Prunus sellowii e Zanthoxylum rhoifolium (91.7%) and for Solanum mauritianum (90.3%). The species with faster growth were, by increasing order, Mimosa scabrella, Trema micrantha, Solanum mauritianum and Croton urucurana. With a better understanding of the initial developmental potential of tree species, it is possible to increase the species and functional diversity of the filling group. There was no single model capable of describing the variables analyzed and different models were needed to describe different characteristics and species.

RESUMO A Araucaria angustifolia Bertol. é uma espécie nativa do Brasil que, devido a ação antrópica ao longo de vários anos, a colocou sob ameaça de extinção. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a variabilidade genética de Araucaria angustifolia com base em variáveis qualitativas e quantitativas de crescimento inicial em teste de procedências e progênies, selecionando-se aquelas com maior presença de superioridade como subsídio para a formação de pomares de sementes. Um teste de procedência e progênies foi instalado em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se as árvores matrizes de Guarapuava-PR e Palmeira-SC, de acordo com suas características biométricas e morfométricas. Cada matriz recebeu código de controle. As árvores matrizes foram avaliadas de acordo com as características dendrométricas e sanitárias, bem como as pinhas colhidas, quanto ao peso, volume e sanidade. Foram selecionadas 14 matrizes de Palmeira-SC e 10 matrizes de Guarapuava-PR. As pinhas de cada matriz selecionada foram avaliadas utilizando variáveis quantitativas. As sementes dessas pinhas, de acordo com a árvore matricial, foram separadas e utilizadas no experimento para avaliar a emergência das sementes e o crescimento inicial entre os genótipos. Todas as análises estatísticas foram realizadas pelos softwares GENES® e R Studio. Verificou-se que existe variabilidade genética entre as procedências e progênies para a maioria dos caracteres quantitativos estudados para a espécie e, portanto, a possibilidade de obter ganhos através da seleção entre e dentro das procedências. A seleção entre e dentro das procedências sugere a possibilidade de alcançar ganhos genéticos significativos, especialmente para caracteres de peso e diâmetro de pinhas, peso e número de sementes por pinha e crescimento das árvores.

ABSTRACT The species Araucaria angustifolia Bertol. is native from Brazil, and it is now an endangered species due to the anthropic actions for several years. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic variability of Araucaria angustifolia based on initial growth qualitative and quantitative variables in a provenance and progeny test. Based on this performance, the genotypes with higher presence of superior characteristics were selected, to subsidize the formation of seed orchards. The matrices from Guarapuava-PR and Palmeira-SC were chosen according to their biometric and morphometric characteristics. Each matrix received a control code card. The matrices trees were assessed according to dendrometric and sanitary characteristics, and the harvested pine cones were evaluated for their weight, volume, and sanity. A total of 14 matrices from Palmeira-SC and 10 matrices from Guarapuava-PR were selected. The pinecones from each selected matrix were evaluated by quantitative characters. The seeds of these pineconeswere separated according to matrix tree, and they were used in the experiment to evaluatethe emergency and initial growth among genotypes.All the statistical analyses were conducted in a computational application about genetics -GENES® and on the software R Studio. It was verified that there is genetic variability among the provenances and progenies for most of the quantitative characters studied for A. angustifolia, and thus, there is also the possibility of obtaining gains through selection among and within the provenances. The selection among and within the provenances suggests that it is possible to reach significant genetic gains, especially for weight and diameter of pine cones, weight, and number of seeds per pinecone, and tree growth.

Resumen Introducción: Las restingas son ecosistemas llanos costeros ubicados a lo largo del este de Brasil, que corresponden a unos 5 000 km de la costa atlántica brasileña. La vegetación de restinga está asociada con el bioma de la selva tropical atlántica y comprende cuatro zonas de formación principales: praderas costeras, matorrales, bosques abiertos y zonas pantanosas. Especialmente debido a la urbanización costera, este es un ecosistema amenazado, que, a través de sus formaciones arbustivas, exhibe un mosaico único, como resultado de la distribución de la vegetación en núcleos de diferentes coberturas, fisonomía y composición florística. Objetivo: Caracterizar la composición florística superficial y subterránea de una formación conservada, no inundada, de núcleos de matorral abierto de restinga en Linhares, ES, costa del sureste de Brasil. Métodos: La vegetación se muestreó utilizando el método de la línea de intercepción. El diámetro y la altura de los primeros seis núcleos se midieron en cinco transectos instalados cada 50 m, con un total de 30 núcleos distantes hasta 350 m de la línea de costa. Se muestreó la comunidad de vegetación y se calculó su fitosociología e índice de Shannon. En los mismos 30 núcleos, se recogió la hojarasca más la capa superior del suelo (15 x 15 x 10 cm) para examinar el banco de semillas viable, que luego se colocó en un invernadero para germinar e identificar las plántulas. El índice de similitud de Sørensen se usó para comparar la composición florística entre la hojarasca y el banco de semillas de la capa superficial del suelo y también se calculó la regresión entre el volumen del núcleo y el número de especies. Resultados: En la vegetación superficial se identificaron 54 especies de plantas pertenecientes a 32 familias, con un total de 1 098 plantas. Los núcleos registraron una diversidad (H’) de 3.08 nats, y un diámetro promedio de 11.5 m (s = 9.1), área de 526.4 m² (s = 1 081.7) y altura de 2.9 m (s = 1.1). Davilla flexuosa, seguida de Smilax rufescens, presentó el VI (Valor de Importancia) más alto. Se identificaron un total de 1 839 plántulas de 32 especies y 19 familias en el banco de semillas. Enydra sessilis (Asteraceae) tuvo la mayor densidad de semillas viables (544), pero la familia con mayor riqueza de especies fue Cyperaceae. Se encontró una baja similitud entre la vegetación y la composición del banco de semillas (solo 5 especies en común, índice de Sørensen = 0.10). Conclusiones: Los resultados indican que una comunidad recién establecida después de una alteración podría tener una composición de especies sustancialmente diferente, pero con otras especies potenciales para restaurar la vegetación a largo plazo.

Abstract Introduction: Restingas are coastal plain ecosystems located along Eastern Brazil, corresponding to about 5 000 km.The restinga vegetation is associated with the Atlantic rainforest biome and comprises four distinct main formation zones: coastal grasslands, shrublands, open-forests and marsh zones. Especially due to coastal urbanization, this is a threatened ecosystem that, through its different shrub formations, exhibits a unique mosaic as a result of the vegetation distribution in nuclei of different covering, physiognomy and floristic composition. Objective: We aimed to characterize the above and belowground composition of a conserved, non-flooded, open-scrub, nuclei (patches of bushes) formation of restinga in Linhares, ES, southeastern Brazil. Methods: The vegetation survey was conducted using the line intercept method. Diameter and height of the first six nuclei were measured in five transects separated by 50 m, totaling 30 nuclei up to 350 m away from the shore line. The phytosociology and Shannon Index of the aboveground vegetation community were calculated. In the same 30 nuclei, leaf litter and topsoil layer (15 x 15 x 10 cm) samples were collected to survey the viable seed bank, which was later placed in a greenhouse for germination and seedling identification. The Sørensen Similarity index (SSi) was used to compare the floristic composition between the leaf litter and topsoil layer seed banks. Nuclei volume and number of species were calculated as well. Results: In the aboveground vegetation, 54 plant species belonging to 32 families were identified, totaling 1 098 individuals. The nuclei showed a diversity (H’) of 3.08 nats, and an average diameter of 11.5 m (s = 9.1), area of 526.4 m2 (s = 1 081.7), and height of 2.9 m (s = 1.1). Davilla flexuosa, followed by Smilax rufescens, presented the highest IVI (Importance Value Index). A total of 1 839 seedlings from 32 species and 19 families were identified in the seed bank. Enydra sessilis (Asteraceae) had the highest seed density (544), while the family with highest species richness was Cyperaceae. A low similarity between the vegetation surveyed and the seed bank composition was found (only 5 species in common, SSi = 0.10). Conclusions: The results indicate that a post-disturbance early community, established from the seed bank, would have a substantially different species composition, but with other potential species to restore vegetation over the long-term succession.

RESUMO Foi avaliado o crescimento inicial de três espécies madeireiras nativas do Brasil - Araucaria angustifolia, Balfourodendron riedelianum e Parapiptadenia rigida - em Dois Vizinhos - PR, Brasil, usando quatro modelos matemáticos não lineares (Gompertz, Logistic, Logistic 4P e Chapman-Richards). Ao longo dos quatro anos iniciais após plantio, informações sobre diâmetro do colo (mm), altura total (m), altura de copa (m) e diâmetro de copa (m) foram obtidas semestralmente em doze indivíduos de cada espécie. Foi calculada a área de copa (m²) e volume de copa (m³) desses indivíduos. O crescimento em termos de diâmetro de colo, altura total, área de copa e volume de copa foi projetado usando os modelos, e o ajuste dos mesmos foi avaliado em termos de Critério de Informação Akaike e Critério de Informação Bayesiano, Erro padrão da estimativa e Coeficiente de determinação. Os modelos geraram excelentes estatísticas para todos os parâmetros em todas as variáveis, com melhores estatísticas para diâmetro de colo e altura total. Considerando as três espécies, Parapiptadenia rigida apresentou o crescimento mais rápido em todas as variáveis (mediana de 70,97 mm para o diâmetro do colo, mediana de 4,475 m para altura total, mediana de 10,35 m² para área de copa e mediana de 15,30 m³ para volume de copa, aos 48 meses). Um monitoramento mais longo e outros experimentos são recomendados para caracterizar o crescimento dessas três espécies madeireiras nativas brasileiras para descrever seu desempenho para produção de madeira e também para projetos de restauração florestal.

ABSTRACT The initial growth of three Brazilian native timber species in the city of Dois Vizinhos-PR, Brazil, was described - Araucaria angustifolia, Balfourodendron riedelianum, and Parapiptadenia rigida, using four non-linear mathematical models (Gompertz, Logistic, Logistic 4P, and Chapman-Richards). In the first 4 years after planting, information about collar diameter (mm), total height (m), crown height (m), and crown diameter (m) was obtained twice a year for 12 individuals per species. Crown area (m²) and crown volume (m³) were estimated. The growth in these four variables (collar diameter, total height, crown area, and crown volume) was projected using the models, and their fitting was assessed based on the values of the Akaike Information Criterion, the Bayesian Information Criterion, the standard error of estimate, and the coefficient of determination. The models generated excellent statistics for all parameters in all variables, with better statistics for collar diameter (coefficient of determination higher than 0.65 and standard error lower than 30%) and total height (coefficients of determination higher than 0.72 and standard error lower than 37%). Considering the three species, Parapiptadenia rigida showed the fastest growth in all variables (median of 70.97 mm for collar diameter, median of 4.475 m for total height, median of 10.35 m² for crown area, and median of 15.30 m³ for crown volume at 48 months). Longer monitoring periods in this and other experiments are recommended to characterize the growth of these three Brazilian native timber species to adequately describe their performance in timber and forest restoration projects.

ABSTRACT There is a huge lack of researches that evaluate the nutritional limits in tree species used in urban forestry, especially in terms of micronutrients. This study aimed to establish limits and range of micronutrients levels for the proper development of tree species utilized in urban forestry. The study was conducted in the city of Santa Maria-RS-Brazil. Through forest inventory, 23 forest species present in urban forest were selected, and 05 vegetative branches of each tree were collected, in which the contents of B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were analyzed. Ranges of micronutrients’ contents were developed for class limits criteria. Nutritional problems were detected for B, Cu and Zn in G. robusta and S. cumini, indicating a need of fertilization and management of these trees. The levels of Mn were within an adequate range only for the species C. illinoensis and H. chrysotrichus. The contents of B were higher than the level considered adequate for H. chrysotrichusand M. nigra. The rates of Fe showed high levels for E. japonica, H. chrysotrichusand S. babylonica. The estimated nutritional limits enable a greater control in the classification of the results for each tree species utilized in urban forestry.
