Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

OBJECTIVE: In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a work and stress overload to healthcare workers, increasing their vulnerability to mental health impairments. In response, the authors created the COMVC-19 program. The program offered preventive actions and mental health treatment for the 22,000 workers of The Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (HCFMUSP). This paper aims to describe its implementation and share what we have learned from this experience. METHODS: Workers were able to easily access the program through a 24/7 hotline. Additionally, a mobile phone app that screened for signs and symptoms of emotional distress and offered psychoeducation and/or referral to treatment was made available. Data from both these sources as well as any subsequent psychiatric evaluations were collected. RESULTS: The first 20 weeks of our project revealed that most participants were female, and part of the nursing staff working directly with COVID-19 patients. The most frequently reported symptoms were: anxiety, depression and sleep disturbances. The most common diagnoses were Adjustment, Anxiety, and Mood disorders. CONCLUSIONS: Implementing a mental health program in a multimodal intervention was feasible in a major quaternary public hospital. Our data also suggests that preventive actions should primarily be aimed at anxiety and depression symptoms, with a particular focus on the nursing staff.

Abstract TiO2-CeO2 multilayer thin films were deposited by the spin coating method and calcined at 500 and 700 °C. Thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Photocatalytic properties were estimated by varying the concentration of the methylene blue dye (MB) when illuminated by UV radiation. The XRD patterns showed that the temperatures of 500 and 700 °C were effective to obtain TiO2 and CeO2 phases. The difference in the homogeneity of TiO2 and CeO2 films was evident in the AFM images, where the films showed an average roughness of 2.0 and 5.3 nm, respectively. The CeO2-TiO2 thin film obtained at 700 °C showed the best photocatalytic activity, reducing the concentration of MB by approximately 80%, while the CeO2 and TiO2 films obtained at 700 °C reduced only 20% and 29%, respectively. The reuse test showed that the thin films maintained their photocatalytic activity after 4 cycles, and there was no need for thermal treatment, indicating that it is an immobilized photocatalyst with high efficiency in the degradation of organic dyes.

Abstract In this study, thin films of Eu3+, Tb3+ and Tm3+ doped CeO2 in the proportions of 2 and 4 mol% were obtained by spin coating and calcined at 700 °C. The films were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM and UV-vis techniques. The photocatalytic activity of the thin films was measured by the degradation of the methylene blue (MB) dye. The thin films were submitted to 4 photocatalytic cycles to analyze the capacity to be reused. XRD patterns showed no secondary phase formation, where all characteristic peaks were related to CeO2. SEM micrographs indicated that doping at 4 mol% promoted the reduction in the thickness and surface porosity of the thin films. AFM images indicated the increase in surface roughness with rare earths doping. Doping with Eu3+, Tb3+ and Tm3+ increased the degradation of the methylene blue dye by at least 15% for thin films doped at 4 mol%. The reuse tests indicated that the photocatalytic activity remained practically constant even with the application of four consecutive cycles.

ABSTRACT Although the tuberculin test represents the main in vivo diagnostic method used in the control and eradication of bovine tuberculosis, few studies have focused on the identification of mycobacteria in the milk from cows positive to the tuberculin test. The aim of this study was to identify Mycobacterium species in milk samples from cows positive to the comparative intradermal test. Milk samples from 142 cows positive to the comparative intradermal test carried out in 4,766 animals were aseptically collected, cultivated on Lowenstein-Jensen and Stonebrink media and incubated for up to 90 days. Colonies compatible with mycobacteria were stained by Ziehl-Neelsen to detect acid-fast bacilli, while to confirm the Mycobacterium genus, conventional PCR was performed. Fourteen mycobacterial strains were isolated from 12 cows (8.4%). The hsp65 gene sequencing identified M. engbaekii (n=5), M. arupense (n=4), M. nonchromogenicum (n=3), and M. heraklionense (n=2) species belong to the Mycobacterium terrae complex. Despite the absence of M. tuberculosis complex species in the milk samples, identification of these mycobacteria highlights the risk of pathogen transmission from bovines to humans throughout milk or dairy products, since many of mycobacterial species described here have been reported in pulmonary and extrapulmonary diseases both in immunocompetent and immunocompromised people.

ABSTRACT: Sowing occurs in agricultural areas with irregular relief, influencing the quality of seed and fertilizer distribution. The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of different fertilizer metering mechanisms of planters as a function of longitudinal inclination. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with five treatments and six replications. Treatments consisted of five longitudinal inclinations to the metering mechanism (−10, −5, 0, 5, and 10 degrees). The mass of fertilizer collected per minute was considered as a replication. We worked with two types of fertilizers: a mixture of granules and powder. Metering mechanisms used were a horizontal toothed rotor, helical without flow restrictor, helical with lateral overflow, and helical with longitudinal overflow. The longitudinal inclination of ±10° in relation to the leveling altered the metered amount of both fertilizers used in all metering mechanisms. The helical with lateral overflow was the metering mechanism that obtained the smallest amount variation of fertilizer distributed in the different longitudinal inclinations, followed by the helical with longitudinal overflow, horizontal toothed rotor, and helical without flow restrictor.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of space between the base and intermediate base on quality of seed distribution with a horizontal seed plate. The experiment was carried out in 2012 at the Laboratory of Agricultural Mechanization of the State University of Ponta Grossa - PR, Brazil, using a sowing simulation device. The experimental design was completely randomized design with four treatments and seven replications. Treatments consisted of spaces (0, 1, 2, and 3 mm) between the base and intermediate base. Replications were defined by 250 spacing between seeds. Corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill), and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench) seeds were tested. The analyzed variables were faulty, multiple and acceptable spacing. By increasing the space between base and intermediate base, quality of seed distribution was reduced for all species.

ABSTRACT Heat limits the production of broilers. This study evaluated the interactions between early thermal conditioning (ETC) and the electrolyte balance (EB) on performance and characteristics of birds' carcass. Thus, the electrolyte balance (BE = Na+ + K+ - Cl-), was set to 350mEq/kg and electrolyte ratio (K+ + Cl-)/ Na+ in 3:1 by the PPFR program. The experiment was carried out at the Animal Science department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Araçatuba / UNESP. 240 1 day old Cobb-500(r) male chicks were used, lodged in metal batteries with 24 divisions and automatic electric heating. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x2 factorial arrangement, totaling 4 treatments with 6 replicates and 10 birds per experimental plot. ETC occurred on the 5th day of age for 24 hours at 36.5°C in half of the batch. Subsequently, these birds were transferred to an environmentally controlled shed and were grown in boxes, in the same way as the other half that had not received ETC treatment. The effects of chronic heat stress (6 hours at 32°C) applied from the 35th through the 39th day of age were evaluated. Temperature and air humidity, as well black-globe temperature were monitored electronically. Food and water were provided ad libitum. The growth performance data and the mortality rate of birds were measured. The results were subjected to analysis of variance and comparison of means was done by Tukey test. There were no interaction effects between ETC and EB on performance and characteristics of birds' carcass. The ETC and EB strategies proved to be ineffective to mitigate the effects of chronic heat stress in broilers.

ABSTRACT GPS navigation systems have been increasingly found in farming activities, promising lower farmer operational costs. Therefore, this research focused to evaluate the maneuvering time during soybean sowing. The experiment was set in an entirely randomized design with two treatments and twelve replications. The treatments consisted of recording maneuver time spent in conventional sowing and with a GPS navigation system coupled to an autopilot. We evaluated the operation time and the economic return. The maneuvers performed with the aid of navigation system were, on average, 49% faster than those carried by conventional system. We observed a cost saving of R$ 4.15 per hectare in areas with 800-m long lines. Moreover, areas with shorter lines (50 meters), such saving reached a value of R$ 19.90 per hectare. Thus, the use of satellite navigation system combined with an autopilot device can generate significant saving in time and operational costs in soybean cropping.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The phototrophic bacterium Rubrivivax gelatinosushas been used experimentally for the depollution of industrial effluents from broiler and fish slaughterhouses, resulting in a biomass containing oxycarotenoids, substances that impart color and protection against to oxidative reactions. This work aimed to check the effect of R. gelatinosus biomass added into broiler chickens' feed on animal performance and meat/skin color. Two hundred Cobb 500 male chicks were randomly divided into 20 boxes to receive, from the 36th to the 45th day of rearing, 4 treatments with different amounts of biomass in the diets (T1 [control] - 0g/kg; T2 - 1g/kg; T3 - 2g/kg; T4 - 3g/kg), in 5 replicates. Chickens and rations were weighted at the beginning of the rearing time and at the end of each growth phase to assess animal performance. At the end of the experiment (45 days), 20 birds from each repetition were slaughtered for the evaluation of the objective color (L - lightness, C - chroma, h - hue) on skin and meat of breast and thigh. Statistical analyses comprised ANOVA, t test for means comparison and regression analysis, at 5% significance level. Weight gain and feed consumption did not differ statistically (P>0.05), while feed conversion was better for T1. Lightness of meat and skin increased significantly in the treatments with the biomass supplementation. Hue angle of meat and skin increased towards yellow until 2g biomass/kg and towards red at 3g/kg. Chroma was only influenced by the presence of the biomass in thigh meat. It was concluded that the addition of the biomass up to 3g/kg was not harmful to birds' performance and was efficient to cause changes in the color of broiler skin and meat.

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the arboreal component effect on the allocation of litter and nutrients in two Agrosilvopastoral Systems, being System 1: maize (Zea mays) + eucalypt (Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla hybrid) + acacia (Acacia mangium) + brachiaria grass (Brachiaria decumbens); System 2: maize + eucalypt + brachiaria grass; that were compared with pasture monoculture, in Viçosa, MG, Brazil. The litter of the arboreal component and of the forage was collected monthly, at 34 months after establishment, in the period from October 2010 to September 2011, and performed the analysis and quantification of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S. Litter deposition from the forage was higher in the pasture monoculture when compared with the associated systems. Nevertheless, the greater deposition of total litter (forage + arboreal component) was observed in the Agrosilvopastoril Systems, proving the positive influence of the arboreal component on the vegetal material increment laid on the soil. The planting line distance of the trees also influenced the litter deposition which was greater at 1 m, compared with the distances of 3 m, which was higher than 6 m. Except for P, the Agrosilvopastoral Systems deposited a greater amount of nutrients from the system with from the litter, notably from the system with acacia that promoted a greater amount of nitrogen. The arboreal component, the leguminosae specie and the planting line distance influenced the litter and nutrient deposition on the soil in the Agrosilvopastoral Systems, indicating the potentiality of these systems to the recovery and maintenance of degraded pastures.

Erythrina velutina Willd., Fabaceae, is a medicinal plant that can be found in the tropics and subtropics, including in the semi-arid northeastern Brazil. It is commonly used in folk medicine to treat anxiety, agitation and insomnia. E. velutina has been known to present analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities, however, it is unknown if this plant present a protective effect on DNA. We assessed the antigenotoxic effect of E. velutina against the genotoxic effects induced by MMS in the root meristem cells of Allium cepa. Three concentrations of the aqueous extract (100, 200 and 400 mg/L) of this medicinal plant were used in three different types of treatment (pre-, post- and simultaneous). The effects of the extracts on the root meristem cells of A. cepa were analyzed at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. Protective effects were observed at higher concentrations in pre-treatment and in simultaneous treatment. The results suggest that E. velutina may present antigenotoxic properties and demonstrate its chemopreventive potential.

Morphological analysis of the ostrich eggshell is important because several factors can be related to morphological hatchability of eggs of this species in Brazil. Therefore, 60 samples of apparently normal eggs were analyzed (eggs hatched and with embryonic death). The observations were allowed to establish that: the average thickness of the eggshell, the porosity of the shell of the eggs, and correlate these variables with hatchability. The results were statistically analyzed by Duncan's test, which showed that eggs with less porosity also have a lower hatchability. The average porosity of hatched eggs is 19.87 pores/cm², and of eggs with embryonic death is pores/cm2 16.78. There was no statistical difference between the thickness of the shell in the regions studied, no interaction between viability and the regions studied.
