Resumen El objetivo fue determinar si una solución salina ozonizada (SSO3) incrementa los neutrófilos polimorfonucleares (NPMN) endometriales (Exp 1) y desafiar el efecto preventivo de SSO3 sobre la endometritis subclínica (ESC) (Exp 2). En el Exp 1 se utilizaron 38 vacas Holstein primíparas. Se incluyeron vacas con (CAM) y sin antecedentes de metritis postparto (SAM); posteriormente se repartieron en subgrupos control (CTRL, solución salina) o SSO3 (6.7 ± 0.3 ppm). A los 55 días postparto se aplicó 50 ml de CTRL o SSO3 intrauterinamente y a las 48 h se registró la cantidad de NPMN por citología endometrial. En el Exp 2 se utilizaron 26 vacas Holstein primíparas SAM. Las vacas se repartieron aleatoriamente en CTRL o SSO3. Se administraron dos dosis de 50 ml con intervalo de 7 días (primera aplicación 11.3 ± 0.4 días postparto). Al día 30 postparto se diagnosticó ESC (≥6% NPMN). Las vacas CAM tuvieron mayor número de NPMN endometriales comparado con vacas SAM (13.9 ± 6.2 vs 1.0±0.46, P<0.05). El grupo CAM-CTRL presentó mayor número de NPMN que el SAM-CTRL (17.0 ± 9.6 vs 0.1 ± 0.1, P<0.05) mientras que los grupos CAM-SSO3 y SAM-SSO3 (10.4 ± 8.1 vs 1.8±4.8, P>0.05) y SAM-CTRL y SAM-SSO3 (0.1 ± 0.1 y 1.8 ± 4.8, P>0.05) no fueron diferentes. Se observó una tendencia estadística (P=0.09) de menor porcentaje de ESC en grupo CTRL comparado con SSO3 (15.4 y 46.2 %, respectivamente). En conclusión, la SSO3 por vía transcervical no incrementa el número de NPMN endometriales y el tratamiento preventivo con SSO3 aplicado a vacas SAM no disminuyó la ESC. Los resultados sugieren un posible efecto antiinflamatorio del tratamiento solución salina ionizada.

Abstract The objective was to determine whether an ozonized saline solution (O3SS) increases endometrial polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNN) (Exp 1) and to challenge the preventive effect of O3SS on subclinical endometritis (SCE) (Exp 2). In Exp 1, 38 primiparous Holstein cows were used. Cows with (WHM) and no history of postpartum metritis (NHM) were included; they were then divided into control (CTRL, saline solution) or O3SS (6.7 ± 0.3 ppm) subgroups. At 55 d postpartum, 50 ml of CTRL or O3SS was applied intrauterinely and at 48 h, the quantity of PMNN was recorded by endometrial cytology. In Exp 2, 26 primiparous NHM Holstein cows were used. The cows were randomly distributed in CTRL or O3SS. Two doses of 50 ml were administered with an interval of 7 d (first application 11.3 ± 0.4 d postpartum). At d 30 postpartum, SCE (≥6 % PMNN) was diagnosed. WHM cows had higher numbers of endometrial PMNN compared to NHM cows (13.9 ± 6.2 vs 1.0 ± 0.46, P<0.05). The WHM-CTRL group had a higher number of PMNN than NHM-CTRL (17.0 ± 9.6 vs 0.1 ± 0.1, P<0.05), while the WHM-O3SS and NHM-O3SS groups (10.4 ± 8.1 vs 1.8 ± 4.8, P>0.05) and the NHM-CTRL and NHM-O3SS groups (0.1 ± 0.1 and 1.8 ± 4.8, P>0.05) were not different. A statistical trend (P=0.09) of lower percentage of SCE was observed in the CTRL group compared to O3SS (15.4 and 46.2 %, respectively). In conclusion, transcervical O3SS does not increase the number of endometrial PMNN and preventive treatment with O3SS applied to NHM cows did not decrease SCE. The results suggest a possible anti-inflammatory effect of the ionized saline solution treatment.

ABSTRACT This research aims to evaluate the effect of molasses as a source of organic carbon on the growth and lipid profile of Dunaliella salina cultivated under different light regimes to determine its strategy and potential use to produce biodiesel. Two sources of nutrients (F/2 medium, F/2; molasses, M) and two light conditions (12 h light: 12 h darkness, 12L:12D) conformed four treatments (F/2 12L:12D, F/2 D, M 12L:12D, and MD) that were investigated with three replicates each. The concentration of microalgae produced by the groups under light conditions was more than double that of those grown in darkness. The highest biomass produced (46.91 ± 6.47 g L-1) was obtained in the F/2 medium with 12L:12D treatment, while the lowest (18.99 ± 0.78 g L-1) was in the M 12L:12D group. Regardless of the culture conditions, the lipids were mainly composed of the C16:0 and C18 fatty acids. The use of molasses as a culture medium produced the highest amount of C18:1, regardless of the light regime. Molasses promoted the highest production of fatty acids methyl esters. Depending on the culture medium, D. salina cells showed different percentages of saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MFA), and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids. The highest amount of saturated fatty acids was obtained in F/2 12L:12D. The highest amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids was presented in the mixotrophic culture (molasses and light). The cultures grown with molasses were rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. An inexpensive industrial by-product, Cane molasses could be a low-cost feedstock for biodiesel in cultivating D. salina.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of estradiol cypionate (ECP) and estradiol benzoate (EB) as ovulation inducers in a fixed-time artificial insemination pro- grame (FTAI) using sexed semen in Senepol x Brahman red heifers. All animals received on day 0 an intravaginal device of progesterone (P4) of 0.5 g for eight days + 2 mg BE. Heifersingroup1(n=177) received150 µg PGF2α + 150 IU eCG + 1 mg ECP and heifers in group 2 (n=177) 150 IU eCG + 150 µg PGF2α and 24 h later received 1 mg BE. Heifers were inseminated with sexed semen 60 h after removal of the P4 device. The diameter of the preovulatory follicle and the gestation rates were determined by type of ovulation inducer. The diameter of the preovulatory follicle in heifers treated with ECP (11.48 ± 2.88 mm) was statistically similar to those treated with BE (10.81 ± 2.08 mm). A higher gestation rate (p=0.0069) was found in the ECP group (51.4%) than in the BE group (38.4%). It is concluded that ECP in comparison with BE as an ovulation inducer in IATF protocols favours pre-ovulatory follicle growth and gestation rates.

RESUMEN El objetivo del estudio fue comparar la eficiencia del cipionato de estradiol (ECP) y del benzoato de estradiol (BE) como inductores de la ovulación en un programa de inseminación artificial a tiempo fijo (IATF) utilizando semen sexado en novillas Senepol x Brahman rojo. Todos los animales recibieron en el día 0 un dispositivo intravaginal de progesterona (P4) de 0.5 g por ocho días + 2 mg BE. A las novillas del grupo 1 (n=177) se les aplicó 150 µg PGF2α + 150 UI eCG + 1 mg ECP y a las novillas del grupo 2 (n=177) 150 UI eCG + 150 µg PGF2α y 24 h más tarde recibieron 1 mg BE. Las novillas fueron inseminadas con semen sexado 60 h pos-retiro del dispositivo de P4. Se determinó el diámetro del folículo preovulatorio y las tasas de gestación por tipo de inductor de ovulación. El diámetro del folículo preovulatorio en las novillas tratadas con ECP (11.48 ± 2.88 mm) fue estadísticamente similar al de las tratadas con BE (10.81 ± 2.08 mm). Se encontró una mayor tasa de gestación (p=0.0069) en el grupo ECP (51.4 %) que en el grupo con BE (38.4%). Se concluye que el CEP en comparación con el BE como inductor de la ovulación en protocolos de IATF favorece el crecimiento del folículo preovulatorio y las tasas de gestación.

SUMMARY: The Viperidae venoms are composed of a mixture of constituents with enzymatic and non-enzymatic actions, which act on ultrastructural components of cells and tissues. Here, the number of mitochondria, mitochondrial area and the number of mitochondrial cristae from adrenal glands cortex treated with snake venoms were tested after 3, 6 and 24 hours of venom injections. The mitochondria quantitative changes showed a statistically significant decrease, in the number of mitochondria past 3, 6 and 24 h. There was an increase in the mitochondrial area after 6 h, where Crotalus vegrandis venom did not present significant differences with Crotalus pifanorum or Bothrops venezuelensis venoms. After 24 h, there was an escalation of mitochondrial area in all tested venoms. The number of mitochondrial cristae after 3 h did not present important differences with the control treatment. After 6 h, the number of mitochondrial cristae initiated to decrease under the activities of the 3 venoms action, until 24 h of observation. In the qualitative observations it was possible to witness an intense damage of the mitochondria, with loss and swelling of membranes, disappearance of cristae and the appearance of myelin figures, which started at 3 h after the Crotalus and Bothrops venoms injections. These damages probably were due to cytotoxic effects of phospholipases, metalloproteases and/or other proteolytic activities present in Viperidae snake venoms, being more evident in Crotalus venoms. As far as we know, these results define a novel finding that suggest that Viperidae snake venoms are extremely toxic to mammalian mitochondria.

RESUMEN: Los venenos de Viperidae tienen acciones enzimáticas y no enzimáticas, que actúan sobre la estructura celular. Aquí se probaron, a las 3, 6 y 24 horas de la inyección del veneno, el número de mitocondrias, el área mitocondrial y el número de crestas mitocondriales de la corteza de las glándulas adrenales. Los cambios cuantitativos de las mitocondrias mostraron una disminución en el número de mitocondrias a las 3, 6 y 24 h. Hubo un aumento en el área mitocondrial a las 6 h, donde el veneno de la serpiente Crotalus vegrandis no presentó diferencias significativas con los venenos de Crotalus pifanorum o Bothrops venezuelensis. Después de 24 h, hubo un aumento del área mitocondrial en todos los venenos. El número de crestas mitocondriales a las 3 h no presentó alteraciones o diferencias importantes con el tratamiento de control. Después de 6 h, el número de crestas mitocondriales comenzó a disminuir bajo la acción de los 3 venenos, hasta las 24 h de observación. En las observaciones cualitativas se observó un daño intenso de las mitocondrias, con pérdida y edema de las membranas, desaparición de las cristae y aparición de figuras mielínicas, que comenzó a las 3 h después de las inyecciones de veneno de Crotalus y Bothrops. Estos daños se debieron factiblemente a los efectos citotóxicos de componentes proteolíticos de los venenos. Creemos que estos resultados definen un nuevo y original hallazgo, que sugiere que los venenos de serpiente Viperidae son extremadamente tóxicos para las mitocondrias de mamíferos.

SUMMARY: Extensive periods of hypoxic cause adaptive changes that make it possible to respond to the demands imposed by the environment. However, there are cases where this exposure is intermittent, as is the case of workers in andean areas. The objective of this communication was to verify the morphological and mechanical effects on diaphragm and lungs of rats subjected to intermittent hypoxic. Four 6-monthold Sprague Dawley rats were used. Two rats were subjected to 10 cycles of intermittent hypobaric hypoxic (IHH) of 96 h (~428 torr, PO2 90 mm Hg), followed by 96 h of normobaric normoxia, for 80 days. Uniaxial traction and staining tests were performed with Hematoxylin-Eosin and Picrosirius red de Junqueira. When comparing the curves of the diaphragms, those subjected to hypoxic slightly reduce their effort with respect to the condition of normoxia, in the lung tissue the hypoxic negatively affects its resistance, these show a lower slope with respect to the normoxics. In the histological analysis, the pulmonary parenchyma had a lower number of blood vessels and cellularity, such as a greater area fraction of alveolar spaces and amount of total collagen in IHH group. In the diaphragm, IHH group had a lower number of irregularly distributed myocytes and a lower amount of total collagen. In conclusion, the main findings indicate that the diaphragm and lung tissue subjected to IHH undergo structural changes, which result in a decrease in tensile strength.

RESUMEN: Periodos extensos de hipoxia provocan cambios adaptativos que permiten responder a las demandas impuestas por el ambiente. Sin embargo, existen casos donde esta exposición es intermitente, como es el caso de los trabajadores en zonas andinas. El objetivo de esta comunicación fue comprobar los efectos morfológicos y mecánicos en diafragma y pulmones de ratas sometidas a la hipoxia intermitente. Se utilizaron 4 ratas Sprague Dawley de 6 meses de edad. Dos ratas fueron sometidas a 10 ciclos de hipoxia hipobárica intermitente (HHI) de 96 h (~428 torr; PO2 90 mm Hg), seguidos de 96 h de normoxia normobárica, durante 80 días. Se realizaron pruebas tracción uniaxial y de tinción con HematoxilinaEosina y Picrosirius red de Junqueira. Al comparar las curvas de los diafragmas, los sometidos a hipoxia reducen levemente su esfuerzo respecto a la condición de normoxia, en el tejido pulmonar la hipoxia afecta negativamente su resistencia, estas muestran una pendiente menor respecto a las normóxicas. En el análisis histológico, el parénquima pulmonar presentó menor cantidad de vasos sanguíneos y celularidad, como una mayor fracción de área de los espacios alveolares y cantidad de colágeno total en el grupo HHI. En el diafragma, el grupo HHI presentó menor cantidad de miocitos distribuidos irregularmente y de colágeno total. En conclusión, los principales hallazgos indican que el diafragma y el tejido pulmonar sometido a HHI sufren cambios estructurales, que se traducen en una disminución en su capacidad de resistencia tensil.

Abstract In this work the effect of solar radiation on greenhouse environmental conditions and effect on the substrate placed in containers vertically and horizontally for chile ancho pepper cultivation was analyzed. It was found that during the months of August 26 to October 17, there is a solar radiation between 246.91 (9:00 h) to 642 (12:00 h) W m-2. The above, induced inside the greenhouse a differential CO2 content at 9:00 h (853 ppm). In growth and yield of the chili plant, the plants cultivated in horizontal containers stood out the height (98.88 cm) and in dry weight (34.08 g) per plant. Horizontal containers showed a greater correlation between root and volume fresh weight variables of 99%, while the lowest was between leaf area and yield. Therefore, we conclude that in greenhouse chili cultivation it is recommended to use horizontal containers facing south to make efficient their yield by at least 25%.

Resumen En este trabajo se analizó el efecto de la radiación solar sobre condiciones medio ambientales de invernadero y efecto sobre el sustrato colocado en contenedores de manera vertical y horizontal para cultivo de chile ancho. Se encontró qué durante los meses del 26 de agosto al 17 de octubre, hay una radiación solar entre 246.91 (9:00 h) a 642 (12:00 h) W m-2. Lo anterior, indujo al interior del invernadero un contenido diferencial de CO2 a las 9:00 h (853 ppm). En crecimiento y rendimiento de la planta de chile, las plantas cultivadas en contendores horizontales sobresalieron la altura (98.88 cm) y en pesos seco (34.08 g) por planta. Los contenedores horizontales mostraron una mayor correlación entre las variables de peso fresco de raíz y volumen de 99%, mientras que la menor fue entre área foliar y rendimiento. Por lo anterior, concluimos que en cultivo de chile en invernadero se recomienda utilizar contenedores horizontales cara orientación hacia el sur para hacer eficiente su rendimiento en al menos 25 % adicional.

Abstract This study presents the first results of Ni-rich coating growth by the Pechini method on 304 stainless steels fractures, in order to healing fracture surfaces of metallic parts. A series of tests were performed to establish the calcination temperature by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at 1300°C using a heating rate of 10°C/min in mixtures of (CH3COO)2Ni•4H2O (Nickel Acetate Tetrahydrate) with HOC(COOH)(CH2COOH)2•H2O (Citric Acid Monohydrate) and precursors: HOCH2CHOHCH2OH (Glycerol) and HOCH2CH2OH (Ethyleneglycol). Results indicate that the Ethyleneglycol precursor is better than the Glycol because it shows a thermal stability at lower temperature of calcination. Subsequently, 304 stainless steel cylindrical fractures (0.6 cm in diameter, 1 cm height) were immersed in a solution of Ethyleneglycol and these samples were gelated at 110°C for 24 h in a muffle furnace. Additionally, these samples were calcined at 660°C for 60 min under an Ar flow of 200 ml/min, using a heating/cooling rate of 5°C/min in order to synthesize the nickel nanoparticles on the fractures. Coating growth on the fractures was carried out at an Ar flow of 220 ml/min at 1100°C for 60 min at a heating/cooling rate of 10°C/ min. By optical and scanning microscopy MEB), it was observed that the coating has a thickness of ~700 μm with a series of cuboidal precipitates larger than 1 μm, as well as laminar phases rich in Ni, Fe and Cr.

Resumen En este estudio se llevó a cabo el crecimiento de recubrimientos ricos en Ni por el método Pechini sobre fracturas de acero inoxidable 304, para sanar superficies de fractura de piezas metálicas. Una serie de pruebas se llevaron a cabo para establecer la temperatura de calcinación por calorimetría de barrido diferencial (DSC) a 1300°C por 10°C/min en mezclas de (CH3COO)2Ni•4H2O (acetato de níquel tetrahidratado) con HOC(COOH)(CH2COOH)2•H2O (ácido cítrico monohidratado) y precursores: HOCH2CHOHCH2OH (glicerol) y HOCH2CH2OH (etilenglicol). Los resultados mostraron que el uso de Etilenglicol es mejor que el Glicerol debido a que muestra una estabilidad térmica a menor temperatura para la calcinación. Posteriormente, fracturas cilíndricas de 0.6 x 1 cm de acero inoxidable 304 se sumergieron en una solución con Etilenglicol y, se gelaron en una mufla a 110°C por 24 h. Adicionalmente, las muestras se calcinaron a 660°C por 60 min bajo un flujo de 200 ml/ min de Ar, a velocidad de calentamiento/enfriamiento de 5°C/min para sintetizar las nanopartículas de Ni sobre las fracturas. El crecimiento del recubrimiento sobre las fracturas se llevó a cabo en un flujo de Ar de 220 ml/min a 1100°C por 60 min a una velocidad de calentamiento/enfriamiento de 10°C/min. Mediante microscopía óptica y de barrido, se observó que el recubrimiento presenta un espesor de hasta 700 μm con una serie de precipitados cuboidales mayores a 1 μm, así como fases laminares ricos en Ni, Fe y Cr.

Neurocysticercosis is a nervous system infection caused by the larvae (cysticercus) of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). Neurocysticercosis is the primary cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide and, therefore, a global public health problem. On the other hand, T. solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is one of very few infectious diseases considered to be potentially eradicable. Recently, a large-scale elimination program in Tumbes, Peru, demonstrated the feasibility of interrupting transmission. Based on these advances, a series of initial guidelines are proposed aimed at setting out the foundations for regional and national taeniasis/cysticercosis control programs, with simple and feasible local interventions as a starting point.

La neurocisticercosis es la infección del sistema nervioso por la larva (cisticerco) de la tenia del cerdo (Taenia solium). La neurocisticercosis es la mayor causa de epilepsia adquirida a nivel mundial y por ende un problema de salud pública global. De otro lado, la teniasis/cisticercosis por T. solium es una de las pocas infecciones consideradas potencialmente erradicables. Recientemente, un programa de eliminación de transmisión a gran escala en Tumbes, Perú, demostró la factibilidad de interrumpir la transmisión. Sobre la base de estos avances, se proponen una serie de lineamientos iniciales para poner las bases de programas de control regionales y nacionales de la teniasis/cisticercosis, partiendo de intervenciones simples y factibles a nivel local.

Objetivo: Conocer los costos directos (CD) e indirectos (CI) de la atención de pacientes con lesiones por accidentes de tránsito (AT) en el mundo. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática en PubMed, Embase, Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, Journal Storage y Scielo de estudios de costos de atención de víctimas de AT mayores de 16 años, entre 2008 y 2013. La calidad de los estudios se evaluó con criterios extraídos de Drummond y col, y del " Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards statement (CHEERS)" y otros definidos por los autores. Se evaluaron los CD, los CI. La carga de la enfermedad (CE), se hizo con los Años de Vida Ajustados por Discapacidad (AVAD), y Años de Vida ajustados por Calidad (AVAC). Se analizaron los costos generados por discapacidad/rehabilitación y Trauma craneoencefálico (TEC). Los costos monetarios en dólares americanos (USD) de 2010 ajustados por inflación. Resultados: Se analizaron 14 estudios, seis de buena calidad. Se encontraron estudios con 567.000 pacientes y 10 años de duración, costos directos de 48.082 e indirectos de 29.706 USD por paciente; los costos indirectos superaron los directos. La carga de la enfermedad mostró amplia variabilidad; en un estudio el 60% de los pacientes con TEC grave y 20% moderado quedaron con discapacidad corto plazo y en otro el 4,6% quedó con discapacidad a largo plazo. Conclusiones: Existe gran heterogeneidad en los estudios, no hay consenso para evaluar la calidad de estos estudios. Los costos indirectos de accidentes de tránsito superan los directos. Los costos derivados de discapacidad y rehabilitación son poco evaluados.

Objective: to know the direct (DC) and indirect costs (IC) generated by the treatment of patients with moderate or severe injuries caused by traffic accidents (TA) in the world. Methodology: a systematic review of studies assessing the costs of treating victims of traffic accidents older than 16 between 2008 and 2013 was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, Journal Storage and Scielo databases. The quality of the studies was assessed using criteria from Drummond and col, as well as the "Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards statement (CHEERS)" and other mechanisms defined by the authors. DCs and ICs were assessed. The burden of disease (BD) was obtained with the disability-adjusted life year (DALY), and the quality-adjusted life-year (QALY). The costs generated by disability /rehabilitation and traumatic brain injury (TBI) were analyzed. The monetary costs were expressed in 2010 US dollars (USD) adjusted for inflation. Results: 14 studies were analyzed, 6 of which had a good quality. We found studies with up to 567.000 patients and a duration of 10 years. Direct costs were up to USD 48.082 and indirect costs up to USD 29.706 per patient; the direct costs were exceeded by the indirect costs. The burden of disease showed high variability. In one study, 60% of the patients with severe TBI and 20% with moderate TBI had short term disability; in another study 4.6% of the patients sustained long-term disability. Conclusions: there is great heterogeneity in the cost studies. There is no consensus for assessing the quality of these studies. The indirect costs incurred in traffic accidents are greater than direct costs. The costs of disability and rehabilitation are poorly assessed.

Objetivo: conhecer os custos diretos (cd) e indiretos (ci) do atendimento de pacientes com ferimentos por acidentes de trânsito (at) no mundo. Metodologia: realizou-se uma revisão sistemática em PubMed, Embase, Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, Journal Storage e Storage de estudos de custos de atendimento de cítimas de at com mais de 16 anos, entre 2 e 2013. A qualidade dos estudos foi avaliada com critérios extraídos de Drummond y col e do "Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards statement (cheers)" e com outros definidos pelos autores. Avaliaram-se os DC, os CI. A carga da doença (cd) realizou-se com os Anos de Vida Ajustados por Deficiência (avad), e com Anos de Vida ajustados por Qualidade (avaq). Analisaram-se os custos gerados por Deficiência/reabilitação e Traumatismos cranioencefálicos (tce). Os custos monetários em dólares americanos (usd) de 2010 ajustados por inflação. Resultados : analisaram-se 14 estudos, seis de boa qualidade. Encontraram-se estudos com 567.000 pacientes e 10 anos de duração, custos diretos de 48.082 e indiretos de 29.706 usd por paciente. Os custos indiretos foram superiores aos diretos. A carga da doença mostrou gandre variabilidade. Em um estudo, 60% dos pacientes com tce sério e 20% moderado ficaram com deficiência de curto prazo e em outro, 4,6% ficou com Deficiência de longo prazo. Conclusão: existe grande heterogeneidade nos estudos, não há consenso para avaliar a qualidade destes estudos. Os custos indiretos de acidentes de trânsito são superiores os indiretos. Os custos derivados de Deficiência e de reabilitação são pouco avaliados.

Vibrio cholerae represents a significant threat to human health in developing countries. This pathogen forms biofilms which favors its attachment to surfaces and its survival and transmission by water or food. This work evaluated the in vitro biofilm formation of V. cholerae isolated from clinical and environmental sources on stainless steel of the type used in food processing by using the environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). Results showed no cell adhesion at 4 h and scarce surface colonization at 24 h. Biofilms from the environmental strain were observed at 48 h with high cellular aggregations embedded in Vibrio exopolysaccharide (VPS), while less confluence and VPS production with microcolonies of elongated cells were observed in biofilms produced by the clinical strain. At 96 h the biofilms of the environmental strain were released from the surface leaving coccoid cells and residual structures, whereas biofilms of the clinical strain formed highly organized structures such as channels, mushroom-like and pillars. This is the first study that has shown the in vitro ability of V. cholerae to colonize and form biofilms on stainless steel used in food processing.

Enterolobium cyclocarpum is used in the recovery of deforested areas of subtropical dry forests. However, seeds are hard-coated and impermeable to water, so that germination is slow and uneven. Therefore, before starting the production of seedlings of this species for reforestation and plantations, appropriate pre-germination treatments to encourage germination should be determined. In this study, seed weight, moisture content and viability were estimated, and pre-germination treatments applied, including: controls, sanding the seeds, and soaking the seeds in water at room temperature (20 °C) for 96 h, in hot water (75 °C) for 4 h, and in concentrated sulfuric acid for 30 minutes. The seeds were sown in Styrofoam trays, using as substrate mixture of 75 % sand and 25 % forest soil. A completely randomized design was used with four replications of 100 seeds for treatment. The germination capacity, mean daily germination, peak and germination value, height and basal diameter of seedlings at six months of age were evaluated. There were significant differences (P < 0.0001) among treatments for all germination and growth parameters. The best pre-germination treatments for prompt seeds germination of E. cyclocarpum were soaking in sulfuric acid and sanding the seed, while sanding and soaking in water at room temperature during 96 h proved best for basal diameter growth and seedling height.

Enterolobium cyclocarpum es utilizada en la recuperación de zonas deforestadas del bosque seco subtropical. Sin embargo, sus semillas tienen una testa dura e impermeable al agua, lo que ocasiona una germinación lenta y dispareja. Por tal motivo, antes de iniciar la producción de planta de esta especie para reforestaciones y plantaciones, se deben conocer los tratamientos pregerminativos que favorezcan su germinación. Se determinó el peso, el contenido de humedad y la viabilidad de las semillas. Los tratamientos aplicados fueron: testigo, lijado de la semilla, remojo en agua a temperatura ambiente (20 °C) por 96 h, remojo en agua caliente (75 °C) durante 4 h y remojo en ácido sulfúrico concentrado durante 30 min. Las semillas se sembraron en charolas de unicel; como sustrato una mezcla de 75 % de arena y 25 % de tierra de monte; el diseño experimental fue completamente al azar con cuatro repeticiones de 100 semillas por tratamiento. Se evaluó la capacidad germinativa, germinación media diaria, valor pico y germinativo, altura y diámetro basal de las plántulas a los seis meses de edad. Existieron diferencias significativas (P < 0.0001) entre los tratamientos evaluados en los parámetros germinativos y de crecimiento. Los mejores tratamientos pre-germinativos para la semilla de E. cyclocarpum fueron el remojo en ácido sulfúrico y el lijado de la semilla; sin embargo para el crecimiento en diámetro basal y altura de la plántula fueron el lijado y el remojo en agua a temperatura ambiente por 96 h.

RESUMEN La calidad de vida (CV) relacionada con la salud es el componente de esta que se refiere a la percepción que tienen las personas sobre su capacidad para tener una vida útil y desarrollar sus potencialidades y en especial sobre su salud global y el impacto de las enfermedades y tratamientos sobre ella. Para evaluarla se han creado diversas escalas, una de las más usadas es el SF-36, con la cual se han estimado valores de referencia poblacionales útiles en investigaciones clínicas y poblacionales, para monitorear la CV en el tiempo, entre otros. En Colombia no se han calculado aún estos valores. OBJETIVOS: obtener valores aproximados de CV con el Cuestionario de Salud SF-36 en Medellín y su área metropolitana. METODOLOGIA: estudio integrativo cuantitativo con datos de 18 investigaciones que usaron la versión colombiana del SF-36. RESULTADOS :el 54,4% eran hombres quienes presentaron puntuaciones más altas que las mujeres en todas las dimensiones de la CV. Las puntuaciones variaron entre 64,1 (DE: 22,5) en salud mental y 40,8 (DE: 35,5) en desempeño físico. Al aumentar la edad la puntuación disminuye en la mayoría de los dominios, excepto en cuanto a función social y a salud mental. DISCUSION:los valores de referencia estimados en estas poblaciones son menores en todas las dimensiones de la CV a los de México (excepto en salud general), Estados Unidos y Canadá, y están disponibles para ser usados en la evaluación de intervenciones colectivas, seguimiento de tratamientos a pacientes y para comparaciones nacionales e internacionales.

Health-related quality of life (QOL) is the component which refers to the perception people have of their ability to lead a useful life and to develop their potential and, especially, of their overall health and the impact of disease and treatments on it. In order to evaluate the QOL diverse scales were created. One of the most used of these is the SF-36, with which useful population-based reference values have been estimated in clinical and population-based research, in order to monitor the QOL over time, among other uses. In Colombia these values are yet to be calculated. OBJECTIVE:to obtain approximate QOL values using the SF-36 Health Questionnaire in Medellín and its metropolitan area. METHODOLOGY integrative quantitative study using data taken from 18 different pieces of research which used the Colombian version of the SF-36. RESULTS:54.4% of the respondents were male, who scored higher than women in all dimensions of QOL. Scores ranged between 64.1 (SD: 22.5) in Mental Health and 40.8 (SD: 35.5) in Physical Performance. As age increases the score falls in the majority of categories, except in Social Function and Mental Health. CONCLUSION: the estimated values in these populations are less in all dimensions of QOL than those from Mexico (except General Health), the United States and Canada, and are available for use in the evaluation of collective interventions, the follow-up for treatments given to patients and for national and international comparisons.

Abstract The parent group from the rainfed wheat program in Mexico was characterized based on their high (HMW-G) and low (LMW-G) molecular weight glutenin variants. The HMW-G and LMW-G were identified by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Frequencies were calculated for the Glu-A1, Glu-B1, Glu-D1, Glu-A3, Glu-B3 and Glu-D3 loci as well as for their HMW-G and LMW-G combinations. Greater polymorphism was observed in the Glu-B1 and Glu-B3 loci with 6 and 8 individual variants respectively. HMW-G alleles with higher frequency were 2 in Glu-A1, 17+18 in Glu-B1 and 5+10 in Glu-D1, and for LMW-G were the c variants in Glu-A3, h in Glu-B3 and b in Glu-D3. In the Glu-B1 and Glu-D1 loci two new alleles 7+15 and 2+T2/1.5+T2 were identified. Furthermore the HMW-G combination with higher proportion were 2, 17+18, 5+10 and for LMW-G c, h, b. Based on the above, there are alleles and HMW-G and LMW-G combinations in the parent group of rainfed bread wheat in Mexico, favoring progeny generation with suitable quality for the bakery, biscuit and pastry products preparation.

Resumen Se utilizó el grupo de progenitores del programa de trigo de temporal de México, con el objetivo de caracterizarlos con base en sus variantes de gluteninas de alto peso molecular (GAPM) y bajo peso molecular (GBPM). Las GAPM y GBPM Se identificaron mediante electroforesis en geles de poliacrilamida. Las frecuencias se calcularon para los loci Glu-A1, Glu-B1, Glu-D1, Glu-A3, Glu-B3 y Glu-D3 así como para sus combinaciones de GAPM y GBPM. Se observó mayor polimorfismo en los loci Glu-B1 y Glu-B3 con 6 y 8 variantes individuales, respectivamente. Los alelos de GAPM de mayor frecuencia fueron 2 en Glu-A1, 17+18 en Glu-B1 y 5+10 en Glu-D1, y para el caso de GBPM lo fueron las variantes c en Glu-A3, h en Glu-B3 y b en Glu-D3. En los loci Glu-B1 y Glu-D1 se identificaron dos nuevos alelos 7+15 y 2+T2/1.5+T2. Por otro lado la combinación de GAPM de mayor proporción fueron 2, 17+18, 5+10 y de GBPM c, h, b. Con base en lo anterior, en el grupo de progenitores de trigo harinero de temporal de México, existen alelos y combinaciones de GAPM y GBPM que favorecen la generación de progenies con calidad apta para la elaboración de productos de panificación, galletería y repostería.

The dough strength and extensibility of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) depends partly on the alleles of high molecular weight glutenins (HMWG) and low molecular weight glutenins (LMWG) in flour. The objective of this research was to identify the effect of eleven allelic variants on dough quality of recombinant Fg lines, derived from Rebeca F2000XBacanora T88, Verano S92XSalamanca S75 and Gálvez M87XVerano S92. Genotypes were sown at the Experimental Field Bajio of the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agricolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP), Mexico in the summer-winter cycle 2008-2009. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with two replications per treatment. The variables were kneading time, stability to kneading, tolerance to over-kneading, dough strength and tenacity/extensibility relationship. The alleles of HMWG 1 and 2* of locus Glu-A1 as well as 7+9 and 17+18 of Glu-B1, of the cross Rebeca F2000XBacanora T88, were associated with characteristics favoring the dough strength and its extensibility. In the cross Verano S92XSalamanca S75, the LMWG, c and e of Glu-A3 were classified as variants of medium-strong gluten with good extensibility and similar behavior in alleles g and h of Glu-B3. The alleles 2* of Glu-A1 and b of Glu-B3, of the cross Gálvez M87XVerano S92, exceeded the gluten strength of its counterpart 1 and e, respectively, and the c variant of locus Glu-D3 was classified as medium-strong gluten and b as weak gluten. The six alleles evaluated in this cross showed good extensibility. By recombination of allelic variants of LMWG and HMWG is possible to derive combinations of specific glutenins to favor the quality of cookie, bread and tortilla-making products and for baking pastries.

La fuerza y extensibilidad de la masa del trigo harinero (Triticum aestivum L.) depende parcialmente de los alelos de gluteninas de peso molecular alto (GAPM) y gluteninas de peso molecular bajo (GBPM) en la harina. El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar el efecto de once variantes alélicas en la calidad de la masa de líneas recombinantes F6, derivadas de Rebeca F2000XBacanora T88, Verano S92XSalamanca S75 y Gálvez M87XVerano S92. Los genotipos se sembraron en el ciclo otoño-invierno de 2008-2009 en el Campo Experimental Bajío del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP), México. El diseño experimental fue bloques completos al azar con dos repeticiones por tratamiento. Las variables fueron el tiempo de amasado, la estabilidad al amasado, la tolerancia al sobre amasado, la fuerza de la masa y la relación tenacidad/extensibilidad. Los alelos de GAPM 1 y 2* del locus Glu-A1 así como 7+9 y 17+18 del Glu-B1, de la cruza Rebeca F2000XBacanora T88, se asociaron con características que favorecieron la fuerza de la masa y su extensibilidad. En la cruza Verano S92XSalamanca S75, las GBPM, c y e de Glu-A3 se clasificaron como variantes de gluten medio fuerte con buena extensibilidad y comportamiento similar en los alelos g y h de Glu-B3. Los alelos 2* de Glu-A1 y b de Glu-B3, de la cruza Gálvez M87XVerano S92, superaron la fuerza del gluten de su contraparte 1 y e, respectivamente, y la variante c del locus Glu-D3 se clasificó como de gluten medio fuerte y la b como de gluten débil. Los seis alelos evaluados en esta cruza mostraron buena extensibilidad. Mediante la recombinación de las variantes alélicas de GAPM y GBPM es posible derivar combinaciones de gluteninas específicas para favorecer la calidad de los productos de panadería, galletería, tortillería y repostería.

In this work, ordered mesoporous silica MCM-41 was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using industrial-grade sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) as silica source, hexadecyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) as template agent and ethyl acetate as pH regulator. The influence of CTAB/SiO2 molar ratio, reaction time, aging temperature, and co-surfactant type on the structural and morphological properties of the obtained silica was studied. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. Ordered mesoporous MCM-41 silica was obtained at 80 °C by using a range of CTAB/SiO2 molar ratio from 0.35 to 0.71 and reaction times up to 72 h and isopropanol (i-PrOH) as co-surfactant.

En este trabajo se preparó sílice mesoporosa MCM-41 hidrotermalmente usando silicato de sodio (Na2SiO3) grado industrial como fuente de sílice, bromuro de hexadeciltrimetilamonio (CTAB) como surfactante y acetato de etilo como regulador de pH. Se estudió la influencia de la relación molar CTAB/SiO2, tiempo de reacción, temperatura y tipo de co-surfactante sobre las propiedades estructurales y morfológicas de la sílice mesoporosa. Los productos fueron caracterizados mediante difracción de rayos X, microscopía electrónica de barrido, microscopia electrónica de transmisión y adsorción-desorción de nitrógeno. Sílice MCM-41 ordenada estructuralmente fue obtenida a 80 °C usando una relación molar CTAB/SiO2 en un rango de 0.35 a 0.71 y tiempos de reacción mayores a 72 h con isopropanol (i-PrOH) como co-surfactante.
