ABSTRACT Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can ensure the sustainability of agricultural growth. The objectives of this study were to characterize and determine the effects of Bacillus subtilis, isolate IMA Bs/170005, applied as co-inoculant in the soybean planting furrow. In all treatments, the seeds had been pre-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum. The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse, and in the field. Different doses of formulated (8.108 spores mL-1) product with B. subtilis (0; 0.2; 0.4; 0.8; 1.2; 1.6 and 2.0 L ha-1) were tested. The isolate proved efficient for in vitro auxin production. Under greenhouse conditions, the response to B. subtilis co-inoculation consisted of an increase of up to 26% in length of the root system. In the field, co-inoculation in the furrow proved beneficial for crop growth and yield and can be recommended. The best response rate was 0.4 L ha-1. At this dose, averaged over 20 and 40 days after sowing and compared to the control with Bradyrhizobium inoculation alone, increases of 5.3% were observed for plant height, 14.8% for shoot fresh weight, 14.1% for shoot dry weight, 8.5% for root dry weight and 6.5% for soybean yield, demonstrating the efficiency of this B. subtilis isolate as a PGPR.

Abstract IMA 5801B2RF is a medium to short season cultivar with high fiber yield potential. The genes Bt cry1Ac and cry2Ab confer resistance to Lepidoptera and cp4-epsps confers tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate. The key feature of this new cultivar is resistance to ramularia leaf spot and root-knot nematode.

A mancha de ramulária causada por Ramularia areola é uma das mais importantes doenças para a cultura do algodoeiro no Brasil. Para o controle efetivo da doença, são necessárias 5-9 aplicações de fungicidas em cultivares suscetíveis. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar, in vitro e in vivo, o potencial de esporulação de isolados de R. areola, originários de diferentes regiões do Brasil, sob diferentes regimes de temperaturas. A produção de esporos foi avaliada em laboratório e em folhas de plantas de oito cultivares de algodoeiro em condições de casa-de-vegetação. Os resultados obtidos in vitro indicaram que o potencial de produção de esporos foi dependente da temperatura. A máxima esporulação do fungo ocorreu com 17ºC para isolados originários do Estado de São Paulo e 23ºC para isolados de Goiás e Mato Grosso. No estudo in vivo, houve variação na esporulação em função da cultivar e do isolado. A maioria dos isolados apresentou alta agressividade na cultivar FM 966 LL e DELTAOPAL. Com os resultados obtidos, é possível indicar uso mais racional de fungicidas, cultivares que apresentaram menor esporulação do fungo, além de formar base para novos estudos com relação à variabilidade desse fungo em algodoeiro no Brasil. Esse é o primeiro relato sobre o potencial de esporulação de isolados brasileiros de R. areola.

Ramularia blight, caused by Ramularia areola, is one of the most important diseases affecting cotton crop in Brazil. For its effective control, 5-9 fungicide applications on susceptible cultivars are necessary. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, in vitro and in vivo, the sporulation potential of R. areolaisolates from different Brazilian regions at distinct temperatures. Spore production was assessed in the laboratory and under green house conditions by using leaves from plants of eight cotton cultivars. The in vitro results indicated that the potential of spore production was dependent on temperature. Maximum sporulation of the fungus occurred at 17°C for isolates from São Paulo State and 23°C for isolates from Goiás and Mato Grosso States. In the in vivo study, there was a variation in spore production according to the cultivar and the isolate. Most isolates showed to be highly aggressive on cultivars FM966 LL and DELTAOPAL. The obtained results suggest a more rational use of fungicides and cultivars with decreased fungal sporulation and can form the basis for further studies of the pathogenic variability of this fungus in cotton crops in Brazil. This is the first report on the sporulation potential of Brazilian R. areola isolates.

Genótipos de algodoeiro, compreendendo cultivares e linhagens avançadas, foram avaliados quanto à reação à mancha de Ramularia (Ramularia areola), em experimentos de campo e sob infestação natural, aos 60; 90 e 110 dias após a emergência das plantas em Ituverava-SP, e aos 75; 100 e 120 dias em Primavera do Leste-MT. Nos dois locais a avaliação mais tardia foi fundamental para discriminar adequadamente os genótipos e determinar seu grau efetivo de resistência ao patógeno. As avaliações realizadas mais cedo ou foram ineficazes para isso ou subestimaram a suscetibilidade de alguns genótipos. Interação genótipo x ambiente altamente significativa e correlação muito baixa, não significativa, entre as notas médias dos genótipos nos dois experimentos, expressaram desempenho contraditório de alguns genótipos, conforme o local, indicando possível existência de variabilidade genética desse patógeno no Brasil.

Cotton genotypes, comprising cultivars and advanced lineages, were evaluated for their reaction to areolate mildew (Ramularia areola) in field experiments under natural infestation, at 60, 90 and 110 days after plant emergence in Ituverava-SP, and at 75, 100 and 120 days in Primavera do Leste-MT. In both localities, the latest evaluation was fundamental to adequately discriminate the genotypes and determine their effective degree of resistance to the pathogen. The earliest evaluations were inefficacious for this or underestimated the susceptibility of some genotypes. Highly significant genotype x environment interaction and extremely low, non-significant correlation between the mean scores of genotypes in the two experiments expressed contradictory performance of some genotypes, according to the locality, indicating possible existence of genetic variability of this pathogen in Brazil.

There is a lack of information about the level of resistance of cotton genotypes to a wider range of Ramularia areola isolates occurring across the cotton growing areas of Brazil. For this purpose, firstly it is necessary to know the existence or not of genotypic and phenotypic variability among the R. areola isolates from different geographical origins. The objective of the present investigation was to verify the existence of phenotypic variability among 23 R. areola isolates collected from six cotton growing states of Brazil. Two resistant genotypes, FMT 02102996 and CNPA BA 2003-2059, and the susceptible genotype FMT 701 were individually inoculated with 23 R. areola isolates under glasshouse conditions and the severity of infection was evaluated 30 days after inoculation. Genotypes CNPA BA 2003-2059 and FMT 02102996 were susceptible to three isolates and resistant to the rest of the isolates. Genotype FMT 701 was susceptible to all the isolates except the isolates 22.3 and 42.7. Results indicate the existence of variability among R. areola isolates and that the three genotypes are useful in distinguishing phenotypic variability within isolates of this pathogen.

Em área naturalmente infestada com Meloidogyneincognita raça 3, localizada em Primavera do Leste-MT, foi estudado o desempenho de 21 genótipos de algodoeiro com níveis diversos de tolerância ao nematoide, com a adoção ou não de rotação de cultura com Crotalaria spectabilis. De modo geral a rotação diminuiu a severidade dos sintomas exibidos pelas plantas, devidos ao ataque do parasita, e promoveu aumento na produtividade de algodão. Entretanto, seu efeito não foi suficiente para tornar eficaz o desempenho de genótipos de baixa tolerância ao nematoide, os quais, mesmo na presença da leguminosa, tiveram notas para sintomas 142% maiores e produtividades de algodão 57% menores do que as cultivares mais tolerantes. Alta correlação entre as médias de produção dos genótipos na seqüência ou não da leguminosa e ausência de interação genótipo x rotação, indicaram que, embora em patamar mais elevado de produção, a tendência de desempenho dos genótipos foi a mesma na presença e na ausência da crotalária. De tal modo que, na média, a produção dos três genótipos mais tolerantes, na ausência de rotação, foi, ainda assim, 48% superior à dos genótipos mais intolerantes, na presença da crotalária. As perdas mínimas possíveis na produção, atribuíveis ao uso de genótipos intolerantes, foram estimadas em 37% na ausência da rotação e em 29% com rotação.

In an area naturally infested with Meloidogyne incognita race 3, located in Primavera do Leste, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, the performance of 21 cotton genotypes having different levels of tolerance to this parasitic nematode was studied, in the presence or absence of crop rotation with Crotalaria spectabilis. A general trend was observed for crop rotation to reduce the severity of symptoms exibited by plant sowing to nematode incidence, and lead to increased cotton yield. However, its effect was not sufficient to increase the performance of genotypes with low tolerance to the parasite, which, even under the crop rotation schem, had disease sympton rates that were 142% higher and cotton yields that were 57% lower than those obtained for more tolerant genotypes. High correlation between average yield in the presence or absence of crop rotation, and absence of interaction between genotype and crop rotation, indicated that, although at higher yield level being achieved, the tendency of genotype performance remained the same in both systems. The yield of the three more tolerant genotypes in the absence of crop rotation was 48% superior to that of the three least tolerant genotypes under crop rotation. The minimum possible losses, attributable to the use of susceptible genotypes, were estimated at 37% and 29%, respectively, without crop rotation being used or under conditions of crop rotation.

Experimentos conduzidos em casa de vegetação, mediante condições controladas, e em campo, sob infestação natural, foram realizados com o objetivo de testar a transmissibilidade e a reação de genótipos de algodoeiro ao que se presume ser uma nova virose, afetando algodoais, notadamente, no Estado de Mato Grosso. Os testes demonstraram que a doença - denominada provisoriamente neste trabalho, "mosaico das nervuras atípico" - tem como vetor o pulgão do algodoeiro (Aphis gossypii Glover). Genótipos de algodoeiro, compreendendo cultivares e linhagens avançadas disponíveis no Brasil, diferiram notavelmente quanto à reação ao patógeno, enquadrando-se em grupos graduais de resistência/suscetibilidade. A inexistência de correlação positiva entre a resposta dos genótipos à virose em questão e ao mosaico das nervuras f. Ribeirão Bonito ("doença azul"), corrente na região, indica que patógenos diferentes podem ser responsáveis pelas duas doenças.

Greenhouse controlled experiments and field trials, under natural infestation, were carried out in order to verify the transmissibility and the reaction of cotton genotypes to a presumed new virus disease affecting cotton crops, mainly in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The tests revealed that the disease, which is being tentatively named "atypical vein mosaic", has as a vector the cotton aphid (Aphys gossypii Glover). Cotton genotypes, comprising cultivars and advanced lineages available in Brazil, differed considerably with respect to reaction to the pathogen; they were put in graded groups of resistance/susceptibility. The lack of positive correlation between the genotypes' response to this disease, and to the vein mosaic viruses ("blue disease") currently present in this region, indicated that different pathogens could be responsible for these two diseases.

As atuais preocupações quanto à escassez das reservas de petróleo e o agravamento do efeito estufa, pela emissão de CO2, levam a cultura da mamona a ser uma das fontes para energia renovável. Sabe-se que ao longo do ciclo da mamona são produzidos racemos de várias ordens, que se desenvolvem sob diferentes condições ambientais, podendo provocar variações na qualidade das sementes. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar a interferência da colheita e de cinco períodos de armazenamento na qualidade sanitária das sementes de mamona, cultivar IAC-2028. Para tanto, foram instalados os testes de germinação e sanidade, logo após a colheita e aos 3; 6; 9 e 12 meses de armazenamento em condições não controladas de temperatura e umidade relativa do ar. As avaliações foram feitas em esquema de parcela subdividida no tempo, onde as parcelas foram constituídas por cinco épocas trimestrais de avaliação e as sub-parcelas por 11 tratamentos. Os resultados sugerem que todos os racemos podem ser colhidos em uma única etapa, sem que ocorram perdas de qualidade das sementes.

The current concerns with the scarcity of oil reserves and the aggravation of the stove effect due to CO2 emission makes the castor bean oil one viable sources for renewable energy. During the crop growth racemes are produced in several orders that develop under different environment conditions, which can cause variations in quality of the seeds on the field and storage. The purpose of this work was to evaluate effect of harvest and five periods of storage on sanitary quality of seeds of castor bean cultivar IAC-2028. The evaluation of the quality of the seeds consisted of germination and sanitary test immediately after harvest, and at 3; 6; 9 and 12 months of storage under uncontrolled conditions of air temperature and relative humidity. The results suggest that all the racemes can be harvested in a single harvesting time, without losses quality of the castor bean seeds.

Genótipos de algodoeiro, compreendendo cultivares e linhagens avançadas, foram avaliados no Estado de Mato Grosso quanto à reação a Meloidogyne incognita. Em dois experimentos de campo, foi avaliada a tolerância a esse nematóide mediante atribuição de notas, de acordo com sintomas externos exibidos pelas plantas. Um ensaio avaliou também a resistência ao parasita, mediante determinação do número de espécimes nas raízes de plantas amostradas nas parcelas. A resistência foi avaliada também em casa de vegetação, por meio da determinação do número de massas de ovos nas raízes e do fator de reprodução. Foram constatadas diferenças notáveis na reação dos 22 genótipos estudados, verificando-se a formação de grupos graduais de desempenho, tanto com respeito à resistência quanto à tolerância. Nas duas características, destacaram-se positivamente as cultivares IAC 25 RMD, IPR 140 e IPR JATAÍ, e negativamente, dentre outras, FIBERMAX 966, LDCV FREGO e FMT 703. A produção de algodão em caroço variou de 482 a 3087 g/parcela no experimento de Campo Verde, e de 1153 a 3151 g/parcela no de Primavera do Leste. As perdas na produção, nos genótipos mais afetados, foram de até 65% no primeiro experimento e de até 40% no segundo. Os dados de avaliação da resistência e da tolerância mostraram-se correlacionados, porém, os da tolerância, a julgar pelos coeficientes de variação e de correlação intra-classe, na análise da variância, mostraram-se mais precisos e de maior repetibilidade.

Cotton genotypes, comprising cultivars and advanced lineages, were evaluated for tolerance and resistance to Meloidogyne incognita in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. Tolerance was evaluated in two field experiments, attributing scores according to external symptoms exhibited by plants, while resistance was studied in greenhouse and in one field trial, counting the number of egg masses or specimens on the roots, and the reproduction factor. Significant differences were observed among the 22 studied genotypes, concerning both resistance and tolerance, and graduated performance groups were established. The cultivars IAC 25 RMD, IPR 140 and IPR JATAI formed the most resistant/tolerant group, while FIBERMAX 966, LDCV FREGO, and FMT 703, among others, were situated in the most susceptible/intolerant ones. Cotton seed yield ranged from 482 to 3087 g/plot at Campo Verde and from 1153 to 3151 g/plot at Primavera do Leste. Yield losses, attributable to incidence of this nematode, were estimated at 65% and 40%, respectively, in these trials. Data related to resistance and to tolerance were correlated, however, and by taking into account coefficient of variation and intra-class correlation, from the analysis of variance, it could be seen that data relating to tolerance presented greater precision and repeatability.

A cultura da mamona pode ser usada como matéria-prima para energia renovável, no entanto, torna-se necessário o uso de máquinas agrícolas adaptadas a sua colheita. Ao longo do ciclo são produzidos racemos de várias ordens, que se desenvolvem sob diferentes condições ambientais, que podem provocar variações na produtividade total da cultura. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar características agronômicas importantes à colheita mecânica bem como a interferência das épocas de colheita na produtividade da mamoneira. Para tanto, foi instalado um experimento de campo, em blocos casualizados com 11 tratamentos x 5 repetições utilizando-se a cultivar indeiscente IAC 2028 , no ano agrícola de 2005/06 no Centro Experimental Central, Instituto Agronômico (IAC), Campinas (SP). Avaliaram-se a produtividade, o número de frutos e de sementes por racemo bem como a massa de mil sementes. Na avaliação das características agronômicas foi constatada uma grande desuniformidade de medidas entre as plantas, o que pode dificultar a colheita mecânica. Os demais resultados mostraram que o racemo secundário foi o que mais influenciou na produtividade total obtida e a colheita dos racemos, frutos e sementes, nas condições deste experimento, pode ser realizada em uma única etapa, sem que ocorram perdas de produtividade.

The crop of castor bean can be used like raw material for renewable energy, however, becomes necessary the use of agricultural machines adapted to its harvest. During the crop growth racemes are produced under different environmental conditions which can cause variations in productivity of the crop. The purpose of this work was to evaluate important agronomic characteristics to mechanical harvest as well as the effect of time of harvest in productivity of castor bean. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with eleven treatments and five replications, with cultivar IAC 2028 , during the agricultural year of 2005/06 at the Centro Experimental Central, Instituto Agronômico (IAC), Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. Seed yield, number of fruits and seeds per raceme and mass of a thousand seeds were evaluated. In the evaluation of the agronomic characteristics was observed a great variability among the plants, what can complicate mechanical harvest. The results showed that the secondary raceme was the most influence to total productivity and the harvest of the racemes, fruits and seeds, in the conditions of this experiment, can be performed at only time with no decrease in yield.

Genótipos de algodoeiro, compreendendo as principais cultivares em uso no Brasil e linhagens provenientes de diversas entidades, foram avaliadas, em condições de casa de vegetação, quanto à resistência genética à murcha de Verticillium. Com o objetivo de proporcionar condições adequadas para a expressão da resistência, foram desenvolvidos, inicialmente, experimentos para verificar a patogenicidade de diferentes isolados e a concentração mais apropriada do inóculo. A partir desses dados, 25 genótipos foram inoculados, na concentração de 10(6) esporos/mL, pelo método "dipping", com quatro isolados de V. dahliae. Houve diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os genótipos com relação à resistência a esse patógeno. Deltaopal, IAC 04/236, IAC 04/259, PR 0136 e Fibermax 966 destacaram-se como mais resistentes e Coodetec 410, Destak, Coodetec 401 e EPAMIG 0316 como mais suscetíveis. A avaliação da doença mostrou-se eficiente tanto considerando sintomas internos quanto externos na planta, verificando-se correlação r = + 0,85** entre os dois métodos de avaliação.

Cotton genotypes, comprising the main cultivars and some breeding lines available in Brazil, were evaluated under greenhouse conditions for the resistance to Verticillium wilt. In order to establish adequate conditions for resistance expression, experiments examining isolate pathogenicity and the most appropriate inoculum concentration were carried out first. Based on the obtained data, 25 genotypes were then inoculated by the "dipping" method at 10(6) spores/mL inoculum concentration and the plants were evaluated by considering both internal and external disease symptoms. Significant differences in resistance level were observed among the genotypes. Deltaopal, IAC 04/236, IAC 04/259, PR 0136 and Fibermax 966 were more resistant and Coodetec 401, Distak, Coodetec 410 and EPAMIG 0316 more susceptible. Evaluation method was efficient by observing both internal and external symptoms, and the correlation between them was r = + 0,85**.

Foram realizados 16 experimentos em campo, no ano agrícola de 2001/02, nas principais regiões produtoras de algodão do Estado de São Paulo, objetivando avaliar o comportamento de 12 genótipos de algodoeiro em relação à produtividade, à qualidade da fibra e à resistência a seis doenças da cultura. Foi utilizado o delineamento de blocos completos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, cada uma delas representada por duas linhas de 5 metros de comprimento. Diferenças substanciais foram observadas entre os genótipos com respeito à produtividade, quer de algodão em caroço, quer de fibra. Apesar de se mostrar destacada em alguns genótipos, a porcentagem de fibra não constituiu fator predominante na produção de fibra por área. Entre as 12 cultivares estudadas, somente "CNPA ITA 90" e "BRS IPÊ" apresentaram bom índice de resistência à ramularia. Por outro lado, a "IAC 24" apresentou bom índice para murcha de Fusarium, nematóides e ramulose, as três doenças mais destrutíveis. A maioria das cultivares e linhagens estudadas revelou suscetibilidade a uma ou mais das doenças estudadas, não apresentando genótipo com resistência múltipla a todas as doenças consideradas.

In the 2001/02 growing season 16 field experiments were conducted in the main cotton producing regions of the state of São Paulo to evaluate the performance of 12 cotton genotypes for yield, fiber quality and resistance to six diseases of the crop. A randomized complete block design with four replications, which were represented by two five-meter-long rows now used. Substantial differences between genotypes were observed for both cotton seed and fiber. Although outstanding in some genotypes, the fiber percentage was not a determining factor of fiber yield per area. Among the 12 genotypes studied, only 'CNPA ITA 90' and 'BRS IPÊ' presented good index of resistance to the ramularia. On the other hand, 'IAC 24' presented good index for Fusarium, nematodes and ramulose, the three more destructible diseases.Most of the evalueted cultivars and lines were susceptible to one or more diseases; none of them showed multiple resistance to all diseases.

A brusone, causada por Pyricularia grisea (teleomorfa Magnaphorthe grisea), possui uma ampla gama de hospedeiros. No Brasil, arroz, trigo, triticale e cevada são as culturas que sofrem quedas significativas de produtividade devido ao ataque desse patógeno. Além desses cereais, outras gramíneas também têm apresentado sintomas dessa doença. Os objetivos dessa pesquisa foram: a) caracterizar sexualmente isolados de P. grisea desses hospedeiros baseado na determinação do "mating type", fertilidade, sexualidade, compatibilidade sexual, b) analisar o grau de compatibilidade sexual entre isolados de brusone de trigo e de outras gramíneas, c) estudar a ocorrência da reprodução sexual em isolados de trigo. Os resultados obtidos através de ensaios "in vitro" constataram: 1) compatibilidade sexual de P. grisea do trigo com Bromus catharticus, Phalaris canariensis e X. triticosecal; 2) desbalanço entre porcentagem de MAT1-1 e MAT1-2, com predominância de MAT1-1 na população de P. grisea do trigo; 3) existência de um campo de isolados de trigo com baixa habilidade de cruzamento; 4) baixa possibilidade de ocorrência de reprodução sexual de P. grisea em campos de trigo, mesmo com existência de ambos "mating type" num mesmo campo.

The blast disease caused by Pyricularia grisea (teleomorph Magnaporthe grisea) has a wide host range. In Brazil, significant yield loss has been reported in rice, wheat, triticale and barley crops. Besides those cereals, several other gramineous plants have been shown to develop symptoms of this disease. The objectives of this research were: a) sexually characterize isolates of P. grisea from these hosts based on the mating type, fertility, sexuality, sexual compatibility, b) to analyze the degree of sexual compatibility among isolates from wheat and other grasses, c) to verify the occurrence of sexual reproduction in isolates from wheat. Results of "in vitro" assay showed: 1) sexual compatibility of P. grisea of wheat with isolates of the fungus obtained from Bromus catharticus, Phalaris canariensis e X. triticosecale, 2) a skewed distribution of mating type, with predominance of MAT1-1,0020in blast population from wheat, 3) the existence of isolates of low crossing ability in a wheat field, 4) a low possibility of sexual recombination in wheat isolates despite the existence of both mating type in the same field.

Pyricularia grisea (teleomorfa Magnaporthe grisea) é um patógeno que infecta mais de 80 gramíneas. No Brasil ataca importantes culturas como arroz e trigo, causando a brusone. Mais recentemente foi reportada na triticale, cultura alternativa para os produtores de trigo no sul do estado de São Paulo. Um dos principais meios de disseminação da doença é a dispersão aérea embora pouca informação esteja disponível sobre a distância que esses esporos podem atingir a partir de uma determinada fonte de inóculo. O presente trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar a capacidade de disseminação de P. grisea a partir de um foco inicial, empregando ferramentas moleculares. A presença de clones do patógeno em campos distantes 4, 30 e 1000 metros a partir de um campo infectado sugere que esporos de um determinado foco podem atingir pelo menos essas distâncias.

Pyricularia grisea (teleomorph Magnaporthe grisea) infects more than 80 gramineous plants. In Brazil, it attacks important crops like rice and wheat causing blast disease. Recently the disease was reported in triticale, an alternative crop to wheat producers in Southern São Paulo state. Airborne conidia are one of the most important way of dissemination, although little reliable information is available on the distance traveled by spores from an inoculum source. The present work aimed to determine by molecular tools the efficiency of aerial dissemination of P. grisea from a known inoculum source. The presence of pathogen clones in fields distant 4, 30 and 1000 meters from an infected field suggested that spores can travel at least these distances.
