ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Casos humanos de leishmaniose tegumentar americana (LTA) têm sido registrados na Serra da Cantareira, região da Grande São Paulo, onde se situam o Parque Estadual da Cantareira e o Parque Estadual Alberto Löfgren. O estudo teve como objetivo identificar a fauna flebotomínea e alguns de seus aspectos ecológicos nos dois parques e área adjacente, para investigar vetores de Leishmania sp. As capturas ocorreram de janeiro a dezembro de 2009, das 18 às 06 horas, com armadilhas automáticas luminosas instaladas em matas e peridomicílios, e com armadilhas de Shannon modificadas, nas cores branca e preta, em peridomicílio. Foram capturadas 12 espécies e 5.436 flebotomíneos por armadilhas automáticas luminosas (141), armadilhas de Shannon (5.219) e tentando picar os pesquisadores enquanto coletavam na armadilha de Shannon (76). Pintomyia fischeri e Migonemyia migonei foram as mais abundantes. Pi. fischeri predominou nos três métodos de coleta com 49,0%, 88,8% e 65,8%, respectivamente, e Mg. migonei foi a segunda mais prevalente na Shannon (10,0%) e tentando picar os pesquisadores (22,4%). Fêmeas de Pi. fischeri foram significativamente mais atraídas à Shannon preta e Mg. migonei à branca. Houve correlação positiva e significante entre o número de Pi. fischeri e a média das mínimas da umidade relativa nos 15 dias anteriores ao dia da coleta, e negativa e significante para as duas espécies mais abundantes em relação a umidade relativa no dia da coleta. Altas frequências e antropofilia de Pi. fischeri e de Mg. migonei sugerem que ambas podem estar atuando na transmissão da LTA na área.

The anthropophilia and high frequencies of Pi. fischeri and Mg. migonei suggest that both species may be transmitting ACL agents in this region.

Casos humanos de leishmaniose tegumentar americana (LTA) têm sido registrados na Serra da Cantareira, região da Grande São Paulo, onde se situam o Parque Estadual da Cantareira e o Parque Estadual Alberto Löfgren. O estudo teve como objetivo identificar a fauna flebotomínea e alguns de seus aspectos ecológicos nos dois parques e área adjacente, para investigar vetores de Leishmania sp. Devido à crescente expansão da leishmaniose visceral americana (LVA) no Brasil, o presente estudo teve como objetivo identificar as espécies de flebotomíneos em áreas vulneráveis à transmissão dessa parasitose, bem como em outras sem qualquer informação sobre a presença desses dípteros no Paraná. As coletas de flebotomíneos foram realizadas em 46 localidades distribuídas em 37 municípios do Paraná, no período de março de 2004 a novembro de 2005. Em cada uma das localidades foram instaladas armadilhas de Falcão, durante três noites consecutivas, em vegetação natural e ambientes antrópicos (intra e peridomicílio). Ocasionalmente, foram instalas armadilhas de Shannon e feitas inspeções de paredes e aspiração em domicílio, peridomicílio e extradomicílio. O tratamento dos dados baseou-se na estimativa das freqüências e abundância das espécies, segundo cinco regiões de distintas paisagens originais. Coletaram-se 38.662 flebotomíneos de 23 espécies. Predominaram Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto) (75.6%), Ny. whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho) (10.1%), Migonemyia migonei (França) (7.8%), Expapillata firmatoi (Barreto et al.) (2.1%) and Pintomyia fischeri (Pinto) (1,6%); representando juntas 97,2% dos flebotomíneos coletados. Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) o principal vetor da LVA não foi encontrado. No entanto, capturou-se Lu. gaminarai (Cordero et al.), cujas fêmeas são morfologicamente semelhantes às de Lu. longipalpis. As espécies mais freqüentes e abundantes têm sido apontadas como vetores da leishmaniose tegumentar no Paraná e em outras áreas das Regiões Sudeste e Sul do Brasil. A presença de Lu. gaminarai no Paraná suscita a necessidade de estudos do seu comportamento, inclusive em relação à sua competência vetorial do agente da leishmaniose visceral.
Due to the spread of the Visceral leishmaniasis in Brazilian territory, this research was undertaken with the objective to identify the sandfly fauna and aspects of the species’ behavior in forest and anthropic environments in Paraná State, Brazil. The sandfly captures were sporadically carried out in 37 municipalities of the Paraná state, during the period from March 2004 to November 2005. Each municipality was once visited, when Falcão traps were installed during three consecutive nights in forested fragments and anthropic environments; captures with Shannon traps installed in forests and edge of forests, inspection of walls and electric aspiration in domiciles and forested areas were sporadically undertaken. The data analysis was based on estimates of frequency and abundance of the species, by five native landscapes. A total of 38,662 specimens belonging to 23 species were captured. Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto) (75.6%), Ny. whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho) (10.1%), Migonemyia migonei (França) (7.8%), Expapillata firmatoi (Barreto et al.) (2.1%) and Pintomyia fischeri (Pinto) (1.6%) together constituted 97.2% of the phlebotomine colletcted. High frequencies of sand flies were found in forests, henhouses, pigpens and domiciles. The three most frequent species have been implicated in transmission of tegumentary leishmaniasis in Paraná and in the Brazilian Southeastern and Southern Regions. Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva), the visceral leishmaniasis vector was no found, however Lutzomyia gaminariai (Cordero et al.), female of which is similar to that of Lu. longipalpis was captured, raising the need to investigate its behavior, including as regard to the vectorial competence.

Leishmânias podem ser produzidas em meio de crescimento condicionado, após o cultivo de células McCoy (MCC). Promastigotas crescidas em meio semi-sólido NNN foram inoculadas em MCC, inicialmente, 100 parasitos por poço com 2,5 mL de McCoyMCC, em placas com 24 poços, sua multiplicação foi observada por uma cinética de 120 horas. Após este tempo, o meio estava saturado de promastigotas. A reprodução das leishmânias foi acompanhada a cada 24 horas, com contagem do número de parasitos por campo fotomicrografado. Como vantagem da técnica do crescimento da leishmânia em MCC tem-se o seu baixo custo, com pequena quantidade de parasitos pode-se obter o aumento da densidade de promastigotas em tempo reduzido. Com o emprego dessa técnica pode-se estudar o comportamento e a multiplicação das leishmânias nos vertebrados e invertebrados, assim como, obter antígenos, tanto brutos (leishmânia) como solúveis, produzidos pelos parasitos, que poderão ser úteis para se desenvolver kits de diagnósticos.
Leishmanias can be produced by inoculation in conditioned McCoy cell culture growth medium (CGM). Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi (100 parasites) grown in NNN medium was inoculated in 2.5 mL CGM, kept in plates (24 wells) and its multiplication was observed for five days (120 hours). After day 5, the medium was saturated with the flagellate forms of the parasite (promastigotes). The reproduction of the leishmanias was observed every 24 hours and the number of parasites was calculated by counting the parasites in a drop of 10 µ L and photomicrographied. So the number of Leishmanias was adjusted to 1 mL volume. The advantage of the technique by isolation of Leishmania in CGM demonstrated in this study is its low cost and high efficacy even with a small quantity of parasites (10² promastigotes) used as inoculum. Additionally, isolation of the leishmania can be obtained together with an increase in their density (180 times) as observed by growth kinetics, within a shorter time. These results justify the use of this low-cost technique for the isolation and investigation of the behavior and multiplication of Leishmania both in vertebrates and invertebrates, besides offering means of obtaining antigens, whether whole antigens (leishmanias) or the soluble antigens produced by the parasites which may be useful for the production of new diagnostic kits.

Descreve-se, pela primeira vez, a fêmea de Evandromyia (Aldamyia) aldafalcaoae (Santos, Andrade-Filho & Honer) a partir de espécimes capturados na Fazenda Nhumirim, Pantanal Sul-Matogrossense. Essa fêmea, diferente das demais do subgênero Aldamyia Galati, 1995, apresenta o duto comum e base dos dutos individuais das espermatecas muito transparentes e de difícil observação. Chave de identificação para as fêmeas desse subgênero é apresentada.
The female of Evandromyia (Aldamyia) aldafalcaoae (Santos, Andrade-Filho & Honer) is described for the first time on the basis of specimens captured on the Nhumirim Farm, in the Pantanal region of the Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The female of this species, differently from others of the Aldamyia Galati, 1995, presents a highly transparent common sperm duct and basal part of the individual sperm ducts, which are thus difficult to observe. An identification key for the females of this subgenus is presented.

Evaluation of DDT insecticide used to sand flies control in domiciles and domestic animal shelters in an endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Collections of sand flies were made with Falcão traps in houses, in one pigsty and in one tree in Jussara Farm, municipality of Jussara, State of Paraná, Brazil, between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. during 7 days from March 24 to April 1, 1992. In May, 1992 DDT insecticide (Dicloro Difenil Tricloro Etano) (1 g/square meter of area) was applied internally and externally on houses and in pigsty. After this, new collections of sand flies were made from July 1992 to February 1993, once a month, with Falcão traps installed in the same hour and conditions mentioned above. Before DDT insecticide application 12,960 sand flies were collected (Hourly Average=463) and it was observed the prevalence (61,8%). of Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho, 1939) After the DDT application only 589 sand flies were collected (Hourly Average=18,4) and also L. whitmani predominated again (90,8%). The decrease of sand flies number after the DDT insecticide application in domiciles and in pigsty prove that this measure can help cutaneous leishmaniasis control in Northern Paraná.

Human bartonellosis is found predominantly in Perú2, 6, 8, 12, 15, as well as in Ecuador3, 7, 10 and Colombia13, 15. In Peru, the disease is restricted to the valleys of the western-side and a few inter-andean and eastern-slopes of the andean valleys6, 15, 18 at altitudes between 1000 and 3200 masl. Most human cases are reported from the regions of Chavin, Nor Oriental del Marañon and Lima16. Lutzomyia verrucarum is presumed to be the only vector of human bartonellosis in the valleys of Peru1, 2, 8, 11, 17, 19/ Our research objetive was to detect the presence of Lu. verrucarum in various localities known to be endemic for human bartonellosis in three provinces of Region Nor Oriental del Marañon. Sandfly collections were made between 1987 and 1992 during four visits to bartonellosis-endemic provinces: San Ignacio (districts of San José de Lourdes: 1020-1260 m and La Coipa: 1200-1560 m), Jaén (districts of Santa Rosa: 1300-1680 m and Jaén: 1220-1680 m) and Utcubamba (districts of Lonya Grande: 1200 m and El Milagro: 1200-1540 m)
