Resumen Chiton articulatus es un molusco endémico del Pacífico mexicano, es una especie de la cual no se conocen muchas asociaciones ecológicas con las algas que los colonizan. Este trabajo describe los epibiontes que se observaron sobre las valvas de esta especie. Los quitones fueron recolectados en el intermareal rocoso de 2 localidades en Guerrero, México. Se recolectaron 62 quitones que tuvieron 50 especies de algas. La familia mejor representada fue Cladophoraceae con 10 especies. Del total de ejemplares, 26 tuvieron epibiontes cuya distribución sobre la concha fue distinta: 11 especies en valvas, 17 en la sutura, 1 en el cinturón y 22 especies compartidas en las 2 primeras zonas. Se reconocieron 5 grupos morfofuncionales de algas: microscópicas, filamentos, costrosas, foliosas y filamentos corticados, con una predominancia de los filamentos. Se encontró relación entre la talla de los quitones y el porcentaje de cobertura de las algas. Estudios como el presente son importantes debido a la interacción entre ambos organismos, ya que los quitones ofrecen superficies de fácil colonización para las algas; es en éstos sustratos donde se pueden encontrar registros de especies que no es común que aparezcan en los inventarios florísticos.

Abstract Chiton articulatus, a mollusk endemic to the Mexican Pacific, is a species whose ecological associations with the algae that colonize it are not well known. This work describes the epibionts observed on the shells of this species. We collected chitons in the rocky intertidal of 2 localities in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. Sixty-two chitons were collected that had 50 species of algae. The best represented family was Cladophoraceae with 10 species. Of the total number of specimens, 26 had epibionts whose distribution on the shell was different: 11 species on the valves, 17 on the suture, 1 on the belt, and 22 species shared in the first 2 zones. Five morphofunctional groups of algae were recognized: microscopic, filamentous, crustose, foliose and corticated filaments, with a predominance of filaments. A relationship was found between the size of the chitons and the percentage of algal cover. Studies like the present one are important due to the interaction between both organisms, since chitons offer surfaces of easy colonization for algae. Furthermore, records of species that do not commonly appear in floristic inventories can be found on these.

Background: Compared to standard coagulation essays (SCE), such as international normalized ratio (INR), prothrombin activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), or platelet count, thromboelastograhy (TEG) offers precise and real-time information about hemostasis. TEG tests both platelet function and coagulation by assaying several parameters of clot formation dynamically in whole blood. Aim: To evaluate hemostasis in cirrhotic patients undergoing liver transplantation and determine the positive and negative predictive values of SCE for alterations of TEG. Material and Methods: Preoperative SCE and TEG were prospectively analyzed in 25 patients. Results were categorized as normal, laboratory alteration or clinical alteration. SCE results were compared with TEG parameters to determine positive (PPV) and negative predictive values (NPV). Results: Hemostasis was abnormal and laboratory abnormalities were observed in all patients. One patient had clinical signs of excessive bleeding. SCE were abnormal in all patients and TEG was normal in nine patients. The most common alteration in TEG was hypocoagulability, in some cases associated with hypercoagulability and hyperfibrinolysis. Two patients had solely hypercoagulability. PPV of INR, aPTT, platelet count and fibrinogenemia were 0, 0, 0.5 and 0.17 respectively. NPV of the same tests were 1, 1, 0.34 and 1 respectively. Conclusions: Hypocoagulability was the most common laboratory alteration, however, clinical signs of coagulopathy were rarely present. SCE had a poor predictive value to diagnose o discard hemostatic abnormalities.

This article addresses the management of knowledge as a development factor of a society or region. Knowledge management involves generating conditions for the creation and exchange of knowledge, to support these processes is necessary to articulate organizational systems that promote the activation of endogenous and intangible capitals, such as knowledge. Under this theoretical conception, a Local System of Innovation (L.S.I) is built for Agrópolis del Norte, for the purpose of stimulate integrating and mobilizing dynamics for social actors of nine municipalities in north Valle del Cauca (Colombia), which constitute the Agrópolis del Norte, towards development of financial and non-financial capital through knowledge management.

Este artículo inicialmente aborda a la gestión del conocimiento como factor de desarrollo de una sociedad o de una región. Gestionar conocimiento implica generar condiciones para la creación e intercambio de conocimiento, para apoyar estos procesos es necesario articular sistemas organizativos que promuevan la activación de capitales intangibles y endógenos, como el conocimiento. Bajo esta concepción teórica se construye un Sistema Local de Innovación (S.L.I) para la Agrópolis del Norte, con el propósito de estimular dinámicas que integren y movilicen los actores sociales de los nueve municipios del Norte del Valle del Cauca (Colombia), que constituyen la Agrópolis del Norte, hacia un desarrollo basado en capitales financieros y no financieros (o intangibles), a través de la gestión del conocimiento.

With the aim to observe any color effect on the shell or nacre of juvenile red abalone (Haliotis rufescens), three diets were formulated adding carotene pigments (astaxanthin, cantaxanthin and β-carotene) and one control diet without pigments. Juvenile abalone (n = 504) with a shell length and weight of 5.46 ± 0.87 mm and 0.03 ± 0.16 g, respectively, were utilized. The abalones were randomly distributed in twelve buckets (20 L) connected to a recirculation system under controlled temperature and constant water flow. Each treatment was done in triplicate. After 90 days of experimentation, the organisms fed on diets with inclusion of pigments showed a length growth rate of 53.06 ± 6.91 μm/day and weight of 1.34 ± 0.24 mg, whereas the juveniles fed with the control diet showed a growth rate of 74.93 ± 14.63 μm/day and weighed 2.13 ± 0.40 mg. The formation of shell and color recorded resulted in a minor color change compared to the control diet. However, in spite of these changes the supplementation of pigment at this point is not recommended. Nevertheless, more efforts should be made to research the shell color manipulation.

Con el propósito de observar cambios en la coloración de la concha y nácar de juveniles de abulón rojo (Haliotis rufescens), se formularon tres dietas a las que se les agregaron pigmentos carotenoides (astaxantina, cantaxantina y β-caroteno) y una dieta testigo sin pigmentos. Se obtuvieron juveniles de abulón (n = 504) de 5.46 ± 0.87 mm y 0.03 ± 0.16 g de longitud promedio de la concha y peso, respectivamente. Los abulones se distribuyeron aleatoriamente en 12 cubetas de 20 L, conectadas a un sistema cerrado de recirculación, con temperatura y flujo constante. Cada tratamiento se realizó por triplicado. Después de 90 días de experimentación, los organismos alimentados con dietas con inclusión de pigmentos presentaron una tasa de crecimiento en longitud de 53.06 ± 6.91 μm/dia y peso 1.34 ± 0.24 mg, mientras que los abulones de la dieta testigo crecieron a razón de 74.93 ±14.63 μm/dia y pesaron 2.13 ± 0.40 mg, sin que se observaran diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos (α = 0.05) experimentales. La formación de la concha y la coloración se registraron mediante imágenes fotográficas y con ayuda de una paleta de colores se observó un ligero cambio en la coloración de la parte exterior de la concha hacia tonalidades amarillas de los abulones alimentados con dietas que incluían pigmentos, siendo más intensa para aquellos que contenían β-caroteno. Sin embargo, a pesar de estos cambios no se recomienda la incorporación de pigmentos para abulón en ese momento, pero será necesario investigar más sobre la manipulación del color de sus conchas.
