Resumen La producción de cultivo de algodón en el Valle de Mexicali se ve afectada principalmente por enfermedades que marchitan y pudren la raíz, y son asociadas al hongo Fusarium spp. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de la inoculación de Fusarium solani en cuatro cepas y conocer el porcentaje de la severidad del daño en plántulas de algodón transgénico. Los resultados indicaron que las cepas T-ICA03 y T-ICA01 presentaron un 90% de daños, así como un mayor número de puntos de infección en el sistema radicular en comparación con las otras cepas evaluadas. En plantas de 20 días de edad se determinó la eficiencia fotosintética y clorofílica observando cambios significativos entre las cepas inoculadas y el control durante el experimento. Ambos parámetros fisiológicos explican los posibles efectos de la infección a nivel del transporte de nutrientes y agua que impacta negativamente al sistema fotosintético de la planta. No obstante, debido a su especificidad, se recomienda principalmente el uso de la eficacia fotosintética como un parámetro no destructivo para evaluar el daño a nivel del fotosistema causado por la infección de F. solani en las plantas de algodón transgénico.

Abstract Cotton crop production in the Mexicali Valley mainly affected by diseases that cause wilt and root rot, which are associated with Fusarium spp. The aim of this work is was evaluate the effect of inoculation with 4 strains of Fusarium solani on the percentage of severity in transgenic cotton seedlings. The results indicated that the T-ICA03 and T-ICA01 strain generated a 90% severity percentage, as well as a greater number of infection points in the root system compared to the other strains evaluated. In 20-day-old plants, the photosynthetic efficiency and chlorophyll was evaluate, observing significant changes between the inoculated strains and the control during the experiment. Both physiological parameters explain the possible effects of the infection at the level of nutrient and water transport that negatively impacts the photosynthetic system of the plant. However, due to its specificity, the use of photosynthetic efficiency is mainly recommended as a non-destructive parameter to assess photosystem damage caused by F. solani infection in transgenic cotton plants.

Abstract Fusarium wilt in tomato seedlings is of great economic importance throughout the world due to the significant losses it causes in the crop. Advances in nanotechnology provide alternatives that can be applied for pathogens control. Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) stabilized with chitosan (Cs) are currently in widespread use for the control of plant pathogens. The objective of the present investigation was to determine the effect of the application of Ag-Cs NPs on the tolerance of tomato seedlings to, and control of the vascular wilt caused by, Fusarium oxysporum. The results showed that the application of the NPs did not show negative effects in the normal vegetative development of the tomato seedlings (up to 2000 ppm). Nanostructures were significantly effective to inhibit mycelial growth by up to more than 70% and, in addition, the treatment was effective to reduce the severity of the disease in Fusarium oxysporum inoculated seedlings after 14 days post-inoculation.

Resumen El daño por Fusarium oxysporum en las plantas de tomate es de gran importancia económica en todo el mundo debido a las importantes pérdidas que genera en el cultivo. Los avances en nanotecnología proporcionan alternativas que pueden aplicarse en el control de patógenos. Las nanopartículas de plata (AgNP) estabilizadas con quitosano (Cs) tienen actualmente un uso generalizado para el control de patógenos de plantas. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue determinar el efecto de la aplicación de AgNP-Cs sobre la tolerancia de plántulas de tomate y control de la marchitez vascular, provocada por el fitopatógeno. Los resultados mostraron que la aplicación de las NPs no mostró efectos negativos en el desarrollo vegetativo normal de las plántulas de tomate (hasta 2000 ppm). Las nanoestructuras fueron significativamente efectivas para inhibir el crecimiento del micelio hasta en más del 70%, además el tratamiento fue eficaz para reducir la gravedad de la enfermedad en plántulas inoculadas con Fusarium oxysporum después de 14 días post-inoculación.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present work is to evaluate the changes on the phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity, phenolic compounds accumulation and photochemical efficiency in leaves of P. glandulosa treated with Cd2+ (0.001 M) and Cu2+ (0.52 M) concentrations for 96 h under hydroponic conditions. The results showed that only leaves treated with copper had a decrease in photochemical efficiency and leaf epidermal polyphenols in P. glandulosa leaves after 96 h of exposure. On the other hand the reverse-phase HPLC analysis revealed higher levels of phenolic compound (gallic, vanillic and caffeic acids) and flavonoids (rutin and kaempferol-3-O-glucosides) in plant leaves from Cu and Cd-treatments with respect to control plants. Finally, highest increments in PAL activity was observed in extracts of leaves treated with Cu and Cd (about 205 and 284%), respectively, with respect to control plants after 96 h treatment. These suggest that activation of phenylpropanoid pathway represent a source of nonenzymatic antioxidants that protect at P. glandulosa against oxidative stress when exposed to cadmium and copper. Hence future studies are necessary to elucidate the participation of phenylpropanoid pathway in the reduction of metal toxicity in Prosopis species.
