Resumo Eschweilera tetrapetala é uma árvore endêmica das Florestas Sazonais Submontanas (SSF) da Chapada Diamantina, remanescentes de floresta Atlântica, Brasil. Os efeitos das mudanças climáticas no padrão de distribuição espacial dessa espécie foram investigados para identificar áreas prioritárias de conservação. Os padrões de distribuição e as densidades populacionais foram obtidos por amostragem de indivíduos em dez transectos de 200 x 10 m e trinta parcelas adicionais de 10 x 10 m situadas em borda e interior de uma área da SSF. Esses dados de ocorrência foram submetidos à Modelagem de Nicho Ecológico usando os algoritmos Bioclim, Maxent e Support Vector Machine. O modelo previsto para sua distribuição atual, usando os algoritmos Bioclim, Maxent e Support Vector Machine (SVM), evidenciou áreas de forte adequabilidade ambiental a leste da Serra do Sincorá. Os modelos determinaram expansão da área de adequabilidade ambiental durante o Holoceno Médio, retração no presente e maiores reduções previstas em cenários futuros. O número de indivíduos nas parcelas variou de zero a 14, indicando distribuição agregada. O índice de Morisita indicou distribuição aleatória ao longo da borda da floresta, mas agregada no interior da floresta. Eschweilera tetrapetala é sensível às mudanças climáticas e pressão antropogênica, em escalas regional e local.

Abstract Eschweilera tetrapetala is a tree endemic to Submontane Seasonal Forests in inland Atlantic forest areas of the Chapada Diamantina Mountains, Northeastern Brazil. The effects of climate change on the spatial distribution pattern of that species were investigated to identify priority areas for its conservation. Distribution patterns and population densities were obtained by sampling individuals in ten 200 x 10 m transects, and in thirty additional 10 x 10 m border and interior forest plots. The occurrence data were subjected to Ecological Niche Modelling using Bioclim, Maxent, and Support Vector Machine algorithms. The predicted model for the current distribution of E. tetrapetala, using the Bioclim, Maxent, and Support Vector Machine algorithms, evidenced stable areas of strong environmental suitability in the east of the Chapada Diamantina. The models also show an expansion of areas with environmental suitability during the Mid-Holocene, with retraction in the present and greater reductions predicted in future global warming scenarios. The number of individuals in the plots varied from zero to 14, indicating an aggregated distribution. Morisita’s index indicated a random distribution along a forest edge but aggregated in the forest interior. Eschweilera tetrapetala is sensitive to climatic change and anthropogenic pressure, at both regional and local scales.

Resumo Capitinga é uma vegetação pouco estudada que cresce em pequenas ilhas de areia branca e fina e cercadas por florestas de latossolo no lado leste das Montanhas da Chapada Diamantina, no nordeste do Brasil. Nosso estudo caracterizou a vegetação da capitinga, suas características ambientais e comparou sua flora com as faixas de mosaico da vegetação do Espinhaço e da Chapada Diamantina. Os dados florísticos foram coletados de 1999-2006 e os levantamentos fitossociológicos foram realizados em 2004-2005 e 2016-2017 em quinze parcelas de 50 x 2 m (100 m2 cada, totalizando 1500 m2). O agrupamento multivariado e a análise de ordenação foram utilizados para examinar a similaridade florística da vegetação da capitinga. No total foram registradas sessenta espécies distribuídas em 36 famílias, enquanto nas parcelas foi registrado um total de 4945 indivíduos distribuídos em 25 famílias e 33 espécies. As famílias mais ricas foram Fabaceae (7) e Apocynaceae (5), enquanto as mais abundantes foram Arecaceae (61.5% de todos os indivíduos) e Velloziaceae (18.4%), representadas por Syagrus harleyi e Vellozia dasypus respectivamente. Capitinga representa um hábitat distinto condicionado por características edáficas e sua flora é diferente de outras vegetações nas áreas do Espinhaço e da Chapada Diamantina, com várias espécies endêmicas.

Abstract Capitinga is poorly studied vegetation growing on small, scattered islands of fine, white sand surrounded by the latosol forests on the eastern flank of the Chapada Diamantina Mountains in northeastern Brazil. Our study characterized capitinga vegetation, its environmental features, and compared its flora with the vegetation mosaic within the Espinhaço and Chapada Diamantina ranges. Floristic data was collected from 1999-2006, and phytosociological surveys were undertaken in 2004-2005 and 2016-2017 within fifteen 50 x 2 m plots (100 m2 each, 1500 m2 in total). Multivariate grouping and ordination analysis were used to examine the floristic affinities of capitinga vegetation. Sixty different species from 36 families were recorded overall, while a total of 4945 individuals distributed among 25 families and 33 species were recorded in the plots. The richest families were Fabaceae (7) and Apocynaceae (5), while the most abundant families were Arecaceae (61.5% of all individuals) and Velloziaceae (18.4%), represented by Syagrus harleyi and Vellozia dasypus respectively. Capitinga represents a distinct habitat conditioned by edaphic features, and its flora is unlike other vegetations in the Espinhaço or Chapada Diamantina ranges, with several locally endemic species.

This was a pollen survey, in which we analyzed the sediments and moss polsters of murundus (termite mounds) in the Chapada Diamantina region of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Palynological treatment revealed the presence of 53 pollen types in murundus sediments, of which 23 were related to plants in the semi-arid zone and 30 remained unidentified. In moss polster samples, the pollen assemblage comprised 42 pollen types for which taxonomic affinities were identified and 54 for which they were not. In our comparison of the two pollen assemblages, we found that moss polsters and murundu sediments shared 15 pollen types. For some of the pollen grains in the murundus sediments, it was not possible to make reliable interpretations because of small number of grains and the poor state of conservation. In contrast, the pollen analyses of the moss polster samples showed that they could represent a useful tool for studies of pollen rain. To our knowledge, this is the first study of murundus as natural pollen collectors. Our findings suggest new possibilities for the use of the pollen records preserved in termite mounds.

O Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina foi criado numa região densamente ocupada e grandes áreas dentro desta reserva ainda estão em vias de recuperação natural em decorrência da mineração de diamantes que começou em 1844. Um mapa atualizado da vegetação regional elaborado de maneira que facilite sua interpretação é imprescindível para orientar administradores e outros grupos interessados na preservação e desenvolvimento da região. Um mapa da vegetação do Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina e as áreas no seu entorno foi preparado: 1) delimitando e descrevendo os vários tipos de vegetação regional; 2) fornecendo indicações do grau de conservação da vegetação; 3) apresentando estas informações num formato que facilite sua revisão e atualização; e 4) apresentando estas informações de maneira fácil de interpretar, podendo ser usadas para fins de planejamento, manejo e conservação. O mapa demonstrou perturbações de origem antrópica nas áreas de floresta, cerrado e caatinga adjacentes ao Parque Nacional. As terras dentro da reserva são, em geral, bem preservadas, demonstrando reduzidas alterações antrópicas diretas, embora freqüentes incêndios tenham transformado extensivas áreas de floresta em campos abertos. Apesar das modificações da vegetação regional, existem duas áreas relativamente bem preservadas fora dos limites do Parque Nacional que possuem alta prioridade para ações conservacionistas. O mapa da vegetação apresentado pode auxiliar na elaboração do Plano de Manejo da reserva e na reformulação futura dos seus limites.

The Chapada Diamantina National Park (CDNP) was created in the midst of a densely populated area, and significant sections of the reserve are still undergoing processes of natural regeneration after intensive diamond mining activities were initiated in the mid-1800's. An up-to-date vegetation map was needed in order to indicate the types and distribution of regional vegetation assemblages in an easily interpretable manner and at an appropriate planning scale that could be easily consulted by decision makers and other interested groups at all levels of conservation (and development) planning. A vegetation map of the Chapada Diamantina National Park, and the areas immediately surrounding it, was prepared that: 1) delimits, describes, and maps the regional vegetation assemblages; 2) provides an indication of the degree of conservation of the mapped vegetation; 3) develops this information in a format that facilitates continued updating and revision as more information becomes available, enabling the monitoring of the evolution of the Park lands, and; 4) presents this information in a manner that can be easily interpreted and used for planning, management and conservation purposes. The resulting vegetation map revealed intensive anthropogenic disturbances in forested, savanna, and semi-arid areas subjected to intensive agricultural use outside of the Park boundaries. The National Park lands are generally well preserved but burning has replaced formerly extensive forest areas with open sedge meadows. In spite of intensive modification of the regional vegetation, two well preserved areas with high priority for conservation efforts beyond the National Park limits were identified and characterized. The vegetation mapping of the park itself can aid in the preparation of its management plan and in the reformulation of the existing boundaries of that reserve.
