RESUMO: Um cão macho, da raça Terrier Brasileiro de seis meses de idade, com dispnéia e tosse persistente foi diagnosticado com colapso traqueal intratorácico e pneumonia após estudo radiográfico de tórax. Foi instituído tratamento médico e realizada toracotomia para a implantação de prótese traqueal extraluminal de nitinol. O animal não manifestou dispneia ou pneumonia durante os quatro anos posteriores ao procedimento. A implantação da prótese extraluminal através da toracotomia foi eficaz para o tratamento do colapso traqueal intratorácico, sem provocar danos estruturais na região torácica. Desta forma, este é primeiro relato da utilização bem-sucedida deste tipo de prótese, a partir da abordagem intercostal, no tratamento de cães com colapso traqueal intratorácico.

ABSTRACT: A six-month-old male Brazilian Terrier with persistent cough and dyspnea was diagnosed with intrathoracic tracheal collapse and pneumonia after chest radiographics. The medical treatment was performed, and an extraluminal nitinol prosthesis was placed through thoracic access. The dog did not presented recurrence of dyspnea or pneumonia for four years after the surgical procedure. Placement of the extraluminal prosthesis with the thoracic approach effectively stabilized intrathoracic tracheal collapse without causing any structural damage in the thoracic region. Therefore, this is the first report of a successful use of this prosthesis with an intercostal approach in dogs for intrathoracic trachea collapse.

RESUMO: A hipertensão intra-abdominal (HIA) é o aumento persistente da pressão intra-abdominal (PIA), podendo ser causada por diversas afecções e caraterizada por promover disfunções orgânicas, aumentando a taxa de mortalidade no homem. Em cães e gatos, ainda há poucos relatos da monitoração dessa pressão e do seu tratamento na rotina dos animais admitidos e internados, e sua relação com a mortalidade dos pacientes. Assim, objetivou-se relatar um caso de HIA secundária à ruptura diafragmática crônica em cão, a qual foi tratada com o fechamento abdominal temporário (FAT). Uma cadela foi admitida no hospital veterinário para realização de uma cirurgia de ovário-histerectomia eletiva, quando foi diagnosticada com ruptura diafragmática com fígado e alças intestinais deslocadas para o interior do tórax. Após reposicionamento dessas estruturas na cavidade abdominal, observou-se tensão no abdômen. Realizou-se então o fechamento abdominal temporário com bolsa de Bogotá. Imediatamente após o término da cirurgia, a PIA foi aferida e seu valor era de 15 mmHg, indicando aumento da mesma. O animal foi mantido internado e sua PIA monitorada. Após 24 horas seu valor era de 5,8 mmHg, quando a bolsa de Bogotá foi removida e realizada a celiorrafia definitiva. O paciente teve evolução clínica satisfatória e 72h após a cirurgia recebeu alta hospitalar. O tratamento utilizado para a HIA se mostrou eficaz, contribuindo para a rápida e satisfatória recuperação da paciente.

ABSTRACT: Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) is the persistent increase of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) that could be caused by several pathologies. It is capable of promoting organ dysfunction, thereby increasing the mortality rate of human patients. As for cats and dogs, there are still few reports on how this pressure can be monitored and treated as a routine for admitted and hospitalized animals and on its relationship with the mortality of the patients. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to report a case of IAH secondary to chronic diaphragmatic rupture in a dog, which was treated with a temporary abdominal closure (TAC). A bitch was admitted to the veterinary hospital to undergo an elective ovariohysterectomy when it was diagnosed with a diaphragmatic rupture and displacement of the liver and intestinal loops in the chest. After repositioning these structures in the abdominal cavity, tension was observed in the abdomen. A temporary abdominal closure was then performed with a Bogota bag. Immediately after the surgery, the IAP was measured, presenting a value of 15 mmHg, indicating that there was an increase in intra-abdominal pressure. The animal was hospitalized, and IAP was monitored. After 24 hours, IAP was 5.8 mmHg when the Bogota bag was removed, and definitive celiorraphy was performed. The patient showed satisfactory clinical progress and was discharged 72 hours after the surgical procedure. The treatment used for IAH proved to be effective and contributed to the quick and satisfactory recovery of the patient.

RESUMO: A avulsão traqueal é uma condição identificada em pequenos animais e ocorre como resultado de um incidente traumático na região cervical ou torácica. O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em relatar um caso de avulsão traqueal em um felino doméstico submetido a exames de imagem para investigação diagnóstica. Um felino, macho, sem raça definida, de oito meses de idade, foi diagnosticado com avulsão traqueal por meio de exames complementares de imagem e com confirmação diagnóstica por exames post mortem. O paciente foi submetido a exames radiográficos do tórax e traqueoscopia. Os achados dos exames de imagem revelaram completa descontinuidade da circunferência traqueal, presença de dilatação focal e circunscrita do lúmen traqueal e estenose. O paciente morreu e não houve tempo hábil para intervenção cirúrgica. Na análise macroscópica identificou-se um divertículo traqueal, confirmando assim, os achados dos exames de imagem. A utilização dos exames radiográficos em conjunto com a traqueoscopia foi efetiva no diagnóstico dessa condição.

ABSTRACT: Tracheal avulsion is a condition seen in small animals and occurs as a result of a traumatic incident to the cervical and/or thoracic regions. The aim of this study is to report a case of tracheal avulsion in a cat using imaging examinations for diagnostic investigation. In this report, we examined an eight-month-old male, cat of undefined breed, diagnosed with tracheal avulsion using complementary imaging tests. This diagnosis was confirmed with post-mortem examination. Radiographic examination of the patient’s thorax and a tracheoscopy were performed. These examinations revealed complete discontinuity of the tracheal circumference, the presence of focal and circumscribed dilation of the tracheal lumen and stenosis. The patient quickly died without clinical and surgical intervention. Macroscopic analysis revealed a tracheal diverticulum confirming the findings of the imaging tests. The use of radiographic examinations in conjunction with tracheoscopy was effective at diagnosing this condition.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a resistência mecânica de placas ósseas produzidas a partir de osso cortical bovino, conservadas em diferentes meios, e a eficiência desses meios em inibir o crescimento de microrganismos. Foram utilizadas 168 placas confeccionadas a partir de tíbia bovina e conservadas em glicerina a 98%, solução salina a 150%, solução de açúcar a 300%, líquido de Dakin, congeladas em N2L a -196°C, ou esterilizadas em óxido de etileno. Após reidratação em solução de cloreto de sódio a 0,9% por seis horas, elas foram submetidas a ensaios mecânicos de tração, compressão, flexão e torção. Foi realizada avaliação microbiológica das placas anterior e imediatamente após a reidratação, com ou sem adição de enrofloxacina a 0,5%. Não se observou diferença significativa (P<0,01%) da resistência ao ponto de ruptura entre as placas conservadas nos diferentes meios, congeladas-descongeladas ou esterilizadas. Micro-organismos foram isolados das placas conservadas em solução saturada de sal, açúcar, Dakin ou congeladas em N2L, anterior e após a reidratação. Entretanto, após o uso da solução de cloreto de sódio 0,9%, acrescida de enrofloxacina a 0,5%, não foram isolados microrganismos. Portanto, placas de osso bovino, conservadas em solução saturada de açúcar ou sal, glicerina a 98%, solução de Dakin, congeladas em N2L ou esterilizadas em óxido de etileno assemelham-se em relação à biomecânica e a reidratação com solução de cloreto de sódio a 0,9%, acrescida de enrofloxacina a 0,5%, é eficaz no controle do crescimento microbiano.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical strength of bone plates yielded from bovine cortical bone, conserved in different solutions, and the efficiency of these solutions in the inhibition of microorganism's growth. A hundred and sixty eight plates yielded from bovine tibiae were conserved in 98% glycerin, 150% saline solution, 300% sugar solution, Dakin solution, frozen in N2L at - 196°C, or sterilized in ethylene oxide gas. After rehydration in NaCl 0.9% solution for six hours, plates were subjected to tensile, compression, bending and twisting testing. The microbiological evaluation of bone plates was s carried out before and immediately after rehydration, with or without enrofloxacin 0.5% addition. There was no significant difference (P<0.01%) on resistance to the rupture point in plates conserved in different solutions, frozen-thawed or sterilized. Microorganisms were isolated from plates conserved in satured salt solution, sugar satured solution, Dakin solution or frozen in N2L, before and after rehydraion However, after the use of NaCl 0.9% solution added of enrofloxacin 0.5%, microorganisms were not isolated. Therefore, bovine bone plates conserved in sugar or salt satured solution, 98% glycerin, Dakin solution, frozen in N2L or sterilized in ethylene oxide gas present similar biomechanical tests results, and rehydrated with a solution of NaCl 0.9% plus enrofloxacin 0.5% is effective on microorganism growth control.

A dor é uma resposta protetora do organismo a estímulos nocivos, que resulta em efeitos indesejáveis quando não controlada. A analgesia pode ser promovida mediante a utilização de vários tipos de fármacos. No entanto, estes podem causar efeitos adversos de acordo com a espécie e condição física do paciente. A acupuntura tem se mostrado eficaz como coanalgésico pela capacidade de diminuir a quantidade de fármacos utilizados para o controle da dor e raramente ser contraindicada. Objetivou-se com este trabalho fazer uma breve revisão sobre as aplicações clínicas e os efeitos fisiológicos da acupuntura nos mecanismos da dor, bem como demonstrar os principais pontos de acupuntura utilizados para analgesia em animais. A pesquisa foi realizada em bases de dados eletrônicas por palavra-chave, durante o período de março a dezembro de 2008.

Pain is a protective response of the body to harmful stimulus, which results in undesirable effects if not controlled. Analgesia can be achieved with the use of different types of drugs. However, these drugs can cause adverse effects according to species and patient physical condition. Acupuncture has been proved to be an effective analgesic adjuvant, by the capacity to decrease the amount of drug used for pain control, rarely contra-indicated. The aim of this paper was to review the physiological effects of acupuncture on pain mechanisms, and demonstrate the main acupoints used for animal analgesia. The search was done in electronic search database using key words, in 2008.

Para avaliar o uso da eletroacupuntura (EA) sobre os aspectos clínicos e deambulatórios, 36 coelhos tiveram o tendão calcanear comum seccionado e, após 30 dias, receberam enxerto de peritônio bovino conservado em solução supersaturada de sal. Em seguida, os animais foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em três grupos de igual número: no primeiro grupo, os coelhos foram estimulados pela EA do segundo ao 11° dia de pós-operatório (PO) (E10); no segundo grupo do 11o ao 31o dia de PO (E20) e, no terceiro grupo, os animais não foram estimulados (C). Verificou-se, nos animais do E10, durante o PO, ausência de edema e hiperemia no membro tratado pela EA. Não se observou diferença significativa (P>0,05) entre os grupos quanto ao grau de deambulação dos animais. Todos os coelhos tiveram completa recuperação da deambulação até os 51 dias de PO. A utilização da eletroacupuntura na fase precoce da cicatrização do tendão calcanear comum de coelhos impediu a formação de edema e hiperemia. O tratamento com eletroacupuntura no PO não melhorou o desempenho da deambulação.

In order to evaluate the use of eletroacupuncture (EA) on clinical and functional aspects, the Acchiles tendon of thirty-two rabbits was sectioned and after 30 days was grafted using salt supersatured - stored bovine peritoneum graft. Then, animals were distributed into three equally groups. They were stimulated by EA from the second to 11th post - operative day (S10 group), from 11th to 31th pos-operative day (S20 group), or were not stimulated (C group). Neither edema nor hyperemia were detected on S10 animals. There were no significant (P>0.05) differences between groups related to functional aspects. All rabbits were recovered until the 51th day of the post-operative period. The use of eletroacupuncture on acute Acchiles tendon healing avoided edema and hyperemia, but did not improve functional aspects.

Objetivou-se, com este experimento, avaliar a ação da ropivacaína a 0,5% no bloqueio do nervo alveolar mandibular de gatos. Vinte gatos adultos, sem raça definida, machos ou fêmeas, receberam clorpromazina (1,0mg kg-1, VO) e propofol (3,0mg kg-1, IV). Ropivacaína a 0,5% foi administrada com uma agulha 13x3,8 em forma de "L", inserida no ângulo da mandíbula direita, aproximadamente 1,0cm rostral ao processo angular e 0,5cm dorsal à superfície medial do ramo da mandíbula, a fim de depositá-la próximo ao nervo alveolar mandibular, no forame mandibular. As freqüências cardíaca e respiratória foram mensuradas antes da administração da clorpromazina, 20 minutos após administração desta (T0), 20 minutos após o bloqueio do nervo alveolar mandibular com ropivacaína (T20) e, em intervalos de 20 minutos, até a volta da sensibilidade na região anestesiada. Observou-se o período de latência e a duração da anestesia por meio do pinçamento da pele e gengiva da região lateral direita da mandíbula. Encontrou-se início da anestesia após 22 minutos, com duração de 164,25 minutos. Os parâmetros de freqüência cardíaca e freqüência respiratória tiveram alterações, porém sem significado clínico para a espécie. A ropivacaína a 0,5% anestesia a região dos dentes pré-molares, molares, caninos, incisivos, pele e mucosa oral e lábio inferior, sem causar efeitos colaterais.

This study intended to evaluate the 0.5% ropivacaine action on the alveolar mandibular nerve block in cats. Twenty adult cats, non-defined breed, male or female, received chlorpromazine (1.0 mg kg-1 VO) and propofol (3,0 mg/kg IV). Ropivacaine at 0.5% was administrated with an "L" 13x3,8 needle, inserted in the angle of the right mandible, close to 1.0cm rostral to the angular process and 0.5cm dorsal to the medial surface of the mandible branch, intending to deposit close to the alveolar mandibular nerve, at the mandibular forame. The heart and respiratory rates were measured before the chlorpromazine administration, 20 minutes after its administration (T0), 20 minutes after the alveolar mandibular nerve block with ropivacaine (T20) and in 20 minutes intervals till the sensitivity recovery at the anesthetized region. The latency period and the anesthesia duration were observed through the skin and gingival cross-clamping of the mandible right-lateral region. The anesthesia beginning was found 22 minutes after, with 164.25 minutes duration. The heart rate parameters and respiratory rate had alteration, but without clinical significance to the specie. The 0.5% ropivacaine anesthesia at the region of the premolars, molars, canines, incisors, skin and oral mucosae and bottom lip, without causing collateral effects.

Objetivou-se avaliar, por meio de estudos macroscópicos e histológicos, a reparação cicatricial da córnea de coelhos perfuradas, ocluidas com o adesivo N-butil cianoacrilato, comparado à sutura com fio poliglactina 910 nº 7-0. As córneas de 18 coelhos adultos foram perfuradas e em seguidas submetidas a ráfia, sendo a ferida da córnea do globo ocular direito com o adesivo sintético N-butil cianoacrilato e a do globo ocular esquerdo com pontos simples separados com fio poliglactina 910. Os animais foram separados em três grupos de igual número e decorridos 7, 15 e 30 dias de pós operatório notou-se que tanto o adesivo sintético como a sutura foram eficientes na síntese das feridas, estabilizando o conteúdo intra-ocular. O adesivo N-butil cianoacrilato mostrou-se superior ao fio de sutura poliglactina 910 quanto à evolução e organização do processo cicatricial.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cicatricial repair of perforated cornea in rabbits, by using the N-butyl cyanoacrylate adhesive compared to the 910-polyglactine nº 7-0 thread suture through macroscopic and histological assays. Corneas from 18 adult rabbits were perforated and soon after submitted the synthesis with N-butyl cyanoacrylate synthetic adhesive right ocular globe or by simple interrupted sutures using the 910-polyglactine thread left ocular globe. The animals were separate in three groups of the same number. Examination after 7, 15, and 30 days post-operative showed that both the synthetic adhesive and the suture were efficient in the synthesis of the surgical wounds, thus stabilizing the intra-ocular contents. The N-butyl cyanoacrylate adhesive was showed to be superior to the 910-polyglactine suture thread with regards to the evolution and the organization of the healing process.

Doze cães foram separados em dois grupos de igual número e submetidos à remoção de um retalho de 3,0 x 3,5cm do esôfago cervical. A abertura foi ocluída com enxerto de segmento intestinal livre autólogo desprovido de epitélio e lâmina própria da túnica mucosa, com pontos simples separados por fio poliglactina 910. Os animais do grupo 1 foram observados durante 15 dias de pós-operatório, e os do grupo 2, durante 30 dias. Observou-se epitelização e discreta estenose no local do enxerto com invasão de tecido conjuntivo denso rico em fibras colágenas. O enxerto de segmento intestinal livre autólogo foi eficiente no reparo de rupturas do esôfago cervical de cães.

Twelve dogs were allocated in two groups with same number of animals and submitted to removal of a 3.0 x 3.5cm piece of the cervical esophagus. The incision was occluded with a autograft of free intestinal segment without epithelium and lamina propria of the mucosa, with separate simples points using poliglactina 910 line. Animals of the group 1 were observed for 15 days post-surgery, and the animals from group 2, for 30 days. Epithelization and discreet stenosis in the place of the graft with invasion of dense conjunctive tissue, rich in collagen fibers was noticed. The autograft free intestinal segment was efficient in the repair of ruptures in the cervical segment of the canine esophagous.

Foram avaliados 25 amostras da camada muscular do intestino delgado de cães, conservados em solução supersaturada de açúcar a 300%, glicerina a 98%, polivinil-pirrolidona a 5% e tintura de tiomersal 1:1000. As amostras foram mantidas conservadas por 45 dias e submetidas a análise ultra-estrutural por microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. Os meios não preservaram totalmente a integridade celular, sendo as soluções de açúcar a 300% e glicerina 98% as que melhor mantiveram as ultra-estruturas celulares.

The present study evaluated twenty-five sarnples of the muscular layer of the small gut in dogs, which were preserved in a 300% sugar supersaturated. solution, 98% glycerin, 5% polyvinil-pirrolidona and tiomersal tincture at 1: 1000. The samples were maintained under conservation for 45 days and further submitted to ultrastructural assay by transmission electron microscopy. The cellular integrity was not entirely preserved when using the media, while the 300% sugar solution and 98% glycerin were the preservation conditions that better maintained the cellular ultrastructure.

Para o presente trabalho utilizamos 30 (trinta) cadelas adultas, provenientes dos canis do Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, em Uberlândia, Minas Gerais - Brasil. Os animais, tiveram a cavidade torácica aberta e localizada a artéria aorta (porção torácica), que foi canulada e injetada com Neoprene Latex "450"(4) em sentido caudal. As peças foram, posteriormente, fixadas em solução aquosa de formol a 10%. Verificamos que as artérias ovárica, uterina e vaginal suprem o útero da seguinte forma - A artéria ovárica em todos dos casos origina-se da artéria aorta, cranialmente a artéria mesentérica caudal (98,33%) ou ao mesmo nível desta (1,67%). Em 83,33% das observações ela emite 1 ramo para os cornos uterinos, que distribui-se ora na face dorsal (8,00%), ora na face ventral (12,00%) e ora em ambas as faces (80,00%) ou ainda 2 ramos uterinos em 10,00% dos casos, distribuídos ora na face ventral (66,67%) e ora na face dorsal (33,33%). - A artéria uterina origina-se em todos os casos da artéria vaginal. Em todas as peças observamos que ela irriga os cornos uterinos, sendo que em média a face ventral recebe maior número de ramos que a dorsal. Com relação ao corpo do útero a média do número de ramos da artéria uterina mostrou-se maior na face dorsal. Em 70,00% dos casos a cervix uterina recebeu ramos diretos da artéria uterina, sendo que na face ventral encontrou-se maior número desses vasos arteriais.

The present study involved thirty femeale adult dogs coming from the kennel of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The thoracic cavity of the animal was opened and the aorta astery (thoracic part) was locared and canulated. A 450 Neoprene latex solution was used to injet the aorta astery in caudal direction. The specimens were then fixed in a 10 % formol aqueous solution. The results showed that the ovaric, uterine and vaginal arteries supply the uterus as follows : (1) the ovaric artery, in all the cases, arose from the aorta artery, either cranially to the caudal mesenteric artery (98,33%) or at same level of this artery (1,67%). In 83,33% of the cases, it gave off a branch to the uterine corns, which was distributed on the dorsal (8,00%), on the ventral (12,00%) and ond the both (80,00%) surfaces. In addition, two uterine branches distributed on the ventral (66,67%) and the dorsal (33,33%) surfaces were found in 10,00% of the cases; (2) the uterine artery, in all the cases, arose from the vaginal artery. In all the specimens the artery uterine supplied the uterine corns, with the ventral surfaces receiving greater mean number of branches than the dorsal surface. Concerning the uterine body the mean number of branches from the uterine artery showed to be greater on the dorsal surface. In 70, 00% of the cases, the uterine cervix received branches from directly from the uterine artery, with greater number of these arterial vessels being found on the ventral surface.
