RESUMO A produção de amendoim tem crescido anualmente no Brasil. Com as secas que ocorrem frequentemente em todas as regiões brasileiras, é necessário identificar germoplasma precoce para ser utilizado em trabalhos de melhoramento visando à adaptação ambiental. Aqui, uma mini coleção de amendoim foi estudada com o objetivo de selecionar germoplasma para uso posterior em procedimentos de melhoramento, com foco em ambiente com restrição hídrica. Doze características agronômicas foram adotadas e posteriormente utilizadas em métodos multivariados, baseados em modelos hierárquicos (UPGMA) e dispersão gráfica (variáveis canônicas), visando identificar agrupamentos de acessos precoces. Diferenças estatísticas significativas foram encontradas para a maioria das variáveis, indicando variabilidade genética nos acessos estudados. Com base nas análises multivariadas, verificou-se coerência na formação de três agrupamentos, um deles (G3: PI-268-689 e AHK-85-3) aglomerou os acessos mais promissores para produção de vagens e eficiência reprodutiva, previamente identificados na análise de variância. Portanto, ambos germoplasma são recomendados para uso em trabalhos de melhoramento voltados para o ambiente com restrição hídrica.

ABSTRACT Peanut production is growing annually in Brazil, but with frequent droughts throughout the country, it is necessary to identify an earliness germplasm for the improved environmental adaptation of peanuts. Here, a mini-core collection of peanuts was studied to select germplasms for further use in breeding, with a focus on dry environments. Twelve agronomic traits were adopted and later used in multivariate methods based on hierarchical models (UPGMA) and graphical dispersion (canonical variables), which aimed to identify earliness accession clusters. Statistically significant differences were found for most traits, indicating that there was genetic variability among accessions. Multivariate analyses subsequently revealed coherence in the formation of three clusters, one of which (G3: PI-268-689 and AHK-85-3) combined the most promising accessions for pod production and reproductive efficiency, previously identified through analysis of variance. Therefore, both germplasms are recommended here for use in future breeding studies focused on water-restricted environments.

RESUMO A salinidade da água de irrigação pode causar sérios problemas na produção agrícola, enquanto as fontes de fertilizantes orgânicos potencialmente mitigam o estresse salino. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a produtividade da cultura do milho sob irrigação com água salina e adubação orgânica. O estudo foi conduzido em campo de agosto a novembro de 2020 na fazenda experimental da Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira (UNILAB), Redenção-CE. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados, em parcelas subdivididas, em que as parcelas consistiram em dois níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,8 e 3,0 dS m-1). Nas subparcelas foram aplicadas quatro combinações de fontes de adubo orgânico, compostas por 10 plantas cada, com quatro repetições: C1, esterco bovino + biofertilizante de aves + biofertilizante de cabra; C2, esterco bovino + biofertilizante caprino; C3, esterco bovino + biofertilizante de aves; e C4, tratamento controle. A combinação de fontes de fertilizantes orgânicos não influenciou o acúmulo de assimilados e a produtividade das lavouras de milho sob a salinidade da água de irrigação de 3,0 dS m-1, exceto C3, que atenuou o efeito salino.

ABSTRACT Irrigation water salinity can cause serious problems in crop production, while organic fertilizer sources potentially mitigate saline stress. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the productivity of maize crops under irrigation with saline water and organic fertilization. The study was conducted in the field from August to November 2020 at the experimental farm of the Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira (UNILAB), Redenção-CE. A randomized block design was used, in subdivided plots, in which the plots consisted of two levels of irrigation water salinity (0.8 and 3.0 dS m-1). Four combinations of organic fertilizer sources were applied in the subplots, composed of 10 plants each, with four replications: C1, cattle manure + poultry biofertilizer + goat biofertilizer; C2, cattle manure + goat biofertilizer; C3, cattle manure + poultry biofertilizer; and C4, control treatment. The combination of organic fertilizer sources did not influence the accumulation of assimilates and productivity of maize crops under the irrigation water salinity of 3.0 dS m-1, except for C3, which attenuated the saline effect.

RESUMO A interleucina-4 (IL-4) tem grande importância nos processos inflamatórios em casos de acidente vascular cerebral (AVC), uma vez que ela é capaz de polarizar micróglias para o fenótipo anti-inflamatório chamado M2. Este estudo analisou se a variação entre o genótipo TT e os demais genótipos (CT e CC), no polimorfismo -589 (rs2243250) do gene IL4, possui associação com o prognóstico de AVC hemorrágico e com aspectos clínicos que são fatores de risco para doenças cerebrovasculares. O resultado deste estudo mostra que não há associação estatística do polimorfismo do IL4 nem com prognóstico nem com os aspectos clínicos dos pacientes com AVC hemorrágico.

ABSTRACT Interleukin-4 (IL-4) has great significance in inflammatory processes in cases of stroke, since it is able to polarize microglia to the antiinflammatory phenotype called M2. This study analyzed if the variation between TT genotype and the other genotypes (CT and CC), in -589 (rs2243250) polymorphism of IL4 gene, has association with the prognosis of hemorrhagic stroke (HS) and with clinical aspects which are risk factors for cerebrovascular diseases. The result of this study shows that there is no statistical association of the IL4 polymorphism with either prognosis or clinical aspects in HS patients.

RESUMEN La interleucina-4 (IL-4) tiene gran importancia en los procesos inflamatorios en casos de accidente cerebrovascular (ACV), puesto que hace que las microglías sean polarizadas hacia el fenotipo antiinflamatorio M2. Este estudio analizó si la variación entre el genotipo TT y los demás genotipos (CT y CC), en el polimorfismo -589 (rs2243250) del gen IL4, posee asociación con el pronóstico de ACV hemorrágico y con aspectos clínicos que son factores de riesgo para enfermedades cerebrovasculares. El resultado de este estudio enseña que no hay asociación estadística del polimorfismo del IL4 ni con el pronóstico ni con los aspectos clínicos de pacientes con ACV hemorrágico.

ABSTRACT Cacao is a species of great economic and social importance. Expanding the area grown with this crop has been limited by its climatic requirements. Agroclimatic zoning for agricultural sector and creation of land suitability maps by fuzzy logic contribute to such production expansion. In this sense, this study aimed to develop rainfall zoning for cacao in Bahia state using the fuzzy logic method. The used data came from rainfall historical series of 519 meteorological stations distributed throughout the state. Geostatistical analyses were used to quantify the spatial dependence degree of studied variable and kriging was used to develop maps representing mean monthly rainfall. These maps were submitted to continuous classification by fuzzy mapping for identification of high-risk areas for cocoa growing based on rainfall. Based on the fuzzy method, the southern mesoregion of Bahia state presented the highest rainfall uniformity, suggesting that this area is more suitable for cocoa growing.

Abstract: Lutjanids are marine fish and commonly inhabit coral reefs, which have migratory habits and feed in a general way, due to these characteristics, are susceptible to infections by parasites, such as cuculanid nematodes. This work aimed to report for the first time, the occurrence of Dichelyne (Dichelyne) bonacii in Brazil, in two new hosts, Lutjanus analis and Rhomboplites aurorubens, acquired from local artisanal fishermen at the Aracaju city public fishing terminal (10 ° 54’17 “S37 ° 2’56” W), northeast coast of Brazil. Adult nematodes were collected from the intestinal tract of the hosts, clarified in Aman’s Lactophenol and were briefly described here. Three adult males and five gravid females were found, indicating that the two species of fish acted as definitive hosts. Currently, this species of parasite has been reported only from fish collected in the coast of Mexico, which makes this work the first record of this parasite in Brazilian coastal waters. The results show that probably the range of hosts and the distribution of D. (Dichelyne) bonacii is not as restricted as data pointed in the literature, being a little wider, extending also to waters that bathe the Brazilian coast.

ABSTRACT The combination of 0.5% weight per volume (w/v) crude enzyme consortia produced by solid state fermentation with Penicillium brevicompactum and 27 milligrams per liter (mg/L) of rhamnolipid biosurfactant produced by submerged fermentation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa was employed to pretreat wastewater from a poultry slaughterhouse in bench upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) bioreactors. One bioreactor was fed with untreated wastewater (Control) and another with pretreated wastewater (Test). Under an organic loading rate of 11 kg COD/m3.d, the Test bioreactor showed higher specific methane production (67.8 mL CH4 (STP)/g COD removed), higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) (91.2%), and oil and grease (O&G) (95.8%) removal than the Control bioreactor, which produced 36.1 - 16.9 mL CH4 (STP)/g COD removed with 72.5% COD removal and 48% O&G removal. The Control bioreactor experienced five clogging episodes due to the accumulation of fat on the surface, while the Test bioreactor operated without operational problems. The scum of the Control bioreactor contained more than 10 times higher quantities of fat than the Test bioreactor. The economic analysis indicated that such alternative technology has lower costs than conventional technology.

Resumo A detecção de microrganismos patogênicos em ambientes aquáticos é extremamente importante em termos de saúde pública. Como estas metodologias laboratoriais são geralmente difíceis de realizar, dispendiosas e demoradas, são frequentemente substituídas pela avaliação de bactérias indicadoras de contaminação fecal, tais como Escherichia coli. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a presença de E. coli em amostras fecais de lontras Neotropicais, para avaliar o seu potencial como indicador fecal e poder ser aplicado para a determinação da qualidade microbiológica da água em áreas onde as populações de lontras são numerosas. Vinte e seis amostras de fezes de lontra, coletadas na bacia do Alto Paranapanema, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, foram analisadas quanto à presença de E. coli, utilizando métodos bacteriológicos convencionais. Apenas oito amostras de fezes (30%) se revelaram positivas para E. coli, indicando que este microrganismo não é um indicador fecal adequado para avaliar a contaminação fecal da água por lontras Neotropicais, e não deve ser usada para inferir a presença de agentes patogênicos relacionados com lontra em águas.

Abstract The detection of pathogenic microorganisms in aquatic environments is extremely relevant in terms of public health. As these laboratorial methodologies are usually difficult, expensive and time-consuming, they are frequently replaced by the assessment of fecal indicator bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. This study aimed to assess the presence of E. coli in fecal samples from Neotropical otters, to evaluate its potential as fecal indicator to be applied to the determination of water microbiological quality in areas where otters’ populations are high. Twenty-six otter fecal samples, collected in Alto Paranapanema river basin, São Paulo State, Brazil, were analyzed for the presence of E. coli, using conventional bacteriological methods. Only 8 scat samples (30%) were E. coli positive, indicating that this microorganism is not a suitable fecal indicator to assess water fecal contamination by Neotropical otters, and should not be used to infer the presence of otter related pathogens in waters.

Resumo Aqui, nós fornecemos novos registros de ocorrência de Scinax nasicus (Cope, 1862) para o estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Sul do Brasil. Todos os novos registros aqui fornecidos estão localizados na metade sul do estado. Além disso, nós fornecemos o primeiro registro para a espécie na zona costeira brasileira. Esses registros melhoram consideravelmente o nosso conhecimento sobre a distribuição da espécie no Sul do Brasil.

Abstract Herein, we provide new occurrence records of Scinax nasicus (Cope, 1862) for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. All new records here provide are located on Southern half of the state. Besides this, we provide the first record for species in Brazilian coastal zone. Those records improve considerably our knowledge regarding species distribution in Southern Brazil.

ABSTRACT Twenty four species of Gamochaeta (Gnaphalieae, Asteraceae), G. aliena, G. alpina, G. americana, G. andina, G. axillaris, G. chamissonis, G. depilata, G. deserticola, G. falcata, G. filaginea, G. humilis, G. longipedicellata, G. neuquensis, G. nivalis, G. oligantha, G. procumbens, G. ramosa, G. serpyllifolia, G. simplicicaulis, G. spiciformis, G. stachydifolia, G. subfalcata, G. valparadisea, and G. villarroelii, are formally monographed with morphological descriptions, illustrations, geographic distribution and habitat, distribution maps, phenology, lists of representative specimens examined, and a comprehensive identification key for every species. A new name Gamochaeta ramosa S.E. Freire, N. Bayón & C.M. Baeza for Gnaphalium ramosum Phil. (1864) non Lam. (1779) nec Sch. Bip. (1845), is proposed. The following taxa are newly synonymized: Gamochaeta foliosa with G. spiciformis; G. monticola with G. oligantha; Gnaphalium petraeum with Gamochaeta andina; G. suffruticosa with G. chamissonis; Gnaphalium bellidifolium, Gamochaeta berteroana with G. filaginea; and Gnaphalium agreste with Gamochaeta stachydifolia. The genus Pseudognaphalium is one of the largest genera of the tribe Gnaphalieae (Asteraceae) with about 90 species with worldwide distribution. The vast majority of species are found in South, Central and North America, but some species also occur in Asia and Africa. This work includes the revision of 12 species of Pseudognaphalium from Chile, P. aldunateoides, P. cabrerae, P. cheiranthifolium, P. cymatoides, P. gayanum, P. lacteum, P. landbeckii, P. munoziae, P. psilophyllum, P. remyanum, P. tarapacanum, and P. viravira. A key is provided for their identification, as well as morphological description, illustration, geographic distribution and habitat, distribution maps, phenology, additional material examined, distinguishing characters and taxonomic affinities for each taxon. The new combination Pseudognaphalium cabrerae (S.E. Freire) S.E. Freire, N. Bayón, C. Baeza, Giuliano & C. Monti, is proposed. The following taxa are newly synonymized: Gnaphalium diminutivum, Pseudognaphalium perpusillum, with P. aldunateoides; G. canum, G. ulophyllum, P. moelleri with P. cymatoides; P. heterophyllum, P. heterotrichum, G. pseudohelichrysum, P. robustum with P. gayanum; P. glandulosum with P. psilophyllum; G. longifolium, G. subnudum, P. andicola, P. coquimbense, P. illapelinum, P. montevidense, P. pratense, with P. viravira. RESUMO Nesse trabalho foi estudado o limite da concentração eletrolítica (TEC) em dois solos distintos do estado de Pernambuco. O experimento foi conduzido no Laboratório de Química e Salinidade do Solo da UFRPE. Cada tipo de solo foi acondicionado em cinco funis de Buchner, os quais foram submetidos aos tratamentos compostos por cinco soluções com CE de 0,5; 1,0; 2,0; 4,0 e 8,0 dS m-1. Em cada funil foram adicionadas soluções com relação crescente de NaCl/CaCl2 para obter 10 valores crescentes de relação de adsorção de sódio (RAS), de 0 a 100. As soluções foram aplicadas por meio de sistema tipo “frasco de Mariotte”, mantendo-se carga constante de ~2 cm (potencial de pressão). Após percolado um litro de solução, iniciou-se a coleta do volume drenado num intervalo de tempo conhecido, até o fluxo constante. Os dados foram usados na equação de Darcy, calculando-se a condutividade hidráulica saturada dos solos (Ksat) e, com modelo matemático, calculou-se a TEC, com uma redução de 20% da Ksat. Com o aumento da RAS, observou-se comportamento similar nos dois tipos de solo, no que se refere à redução da Ksat, embora o decréscimo relativo desta tenha sido maior no solo com elevado teor de argila, quando a RAS foi igual a 100.

ABSTRACT This research studied threshold electrolyte concentration (TEC) of irrigation water and its effect on the infiltration rate of two contrasting soils from Pernambuco state, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in the Soil Chemistry and Salinity Laboratory of Federal Rural University of Pernambuco. Each soil was packed in five Buchner funnels, where one funnel from each soil was submitted to treatment with solution of electrical conductivity (EC) of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 or 8.0 dS m-1. For each funnel containing soil, an increasing ratio of NaCl to CaCl2 was applied in a treatment solution to achieve 10 increasing values of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) from 0 to 100. These solutions were applied through a Mariotte bottle, with a constant hydraulic head of ~2 cm (pressure potential). After a liter of solution had drained, in the flux was collected for a known time interval, until steady state was reached. Darcy’s equation was used to calculate saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) and a mathematical model used to calculate the TEC as a 20% reduction in Ksat. By increasing SAR similar behavior was noted between the two soils, whereby Ksat decreased, although the relativedecrease in Ksat was greater for SAR of 100 in the soil with higher clay content.

A cutia é uma das espécies mais intensamente caçados em toda a Amazônia e as regiões semi-áridas do nordeste do Brasil. Considerando-se a tendência atual no manejo de animais silvestres em cativeiro, o objetivo deste estudo foi determinar os valores de referência para o coração cutia criadas em cativeiro, com base em avaliações do eletrocardiograma (ECG). Foram selecionadas cutias adultas e sem sinais clínicos de doença cardíaca (n=30). Os animais foram contidos fisicamente e, em seguida, o ECG foi realizado. Medições padronizadas foram tomadas para estabelecer a análise estatística dos dados. Análise do complexo QRS apresentou valores compatíveis com os relatórios pregressos em animais animais de companhia, assim como para os poucos dados disponíveis para outras espécies selvagens e exóticas, com exceção da onda T, que mostrou amplitude semelhante à onda R em todos os animais estudados. Os dados obtidos permitiram a aquisição dos primeiros valores de referência para os traçados de ECG em cutias, contribuindo para uma melhor compreensão eletrofisiologia cardíaca, na identificação de miocardiopatia nesses animais.

The agouti is one of the most intensely hunted species throughout the Amazon and the semiarid regions of north-eastern Brazil. Considering the current tendency of wild animal management in captivity, the objective of this study was to determine heart reference values for agouti raised in captivity, based on electrocardiographic assessments (ECG). Adult agouti were selected without clinical signs of heart disease (n=30). The animals were restrained physically and then the ECG was performed. Standardized measurements were taken to establish the statistical analysis of the data. Analysis of the QRS complex showed values compatible with previous reports in peer animals and the limited data available for other wild and exotic species, except for the T wave that showed similar amplitude to the R wave in all the animals studied. The data obtained provided the first reference values for ECG tracings in agouti, contributing to a better understanding of heart electrophysiology in identifying myocardial pathology in these animals.

We studied the feeding ecology of a population of Coleodactylus natalensis Freire, 1999, an endemic gecko of Atlantic Forest fragments in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern Brazil. Lizards (N = 49) were collected manually through active search in the four habitats of Parque Estadual Dunas de Natal, type locality of the species. In the laboratory, we measured the lizards and registered the number of consumed prey items identified to Order, its dimensions and frequencies. We also collected samples of leaf litter in each habitat to determine prey availability. Females were significantly larger than males, but head size did not differ between the sexes. The most important prey categories in the diet of C. natalensis based on number, volume and frequency were Isopoda and Araneae. Prey categories with highest importance indices in the diet were Isopoda, Araneae, Homoptera and Gryllidae. The diets of adult males and females were similar with respect to prey size, but differed qualitatively, mainly due to the larger trophic spectrum of females. We found some variations on trophic niche breadths and food preferences of lizards between habitats, but in general niche breadths were intermediate, and the most elected prey categories were Isopoda, Araneae, Homoptera and Thysanoptera. High electivities for Isoptera and Gryllidae occurred only in the open habitats (restinga and dunes), and for Mantodea in the forested habitats (high and low forest). Collembola was consumed in the same proportion of the environment, and Acarina and Formicidae had negative values of electivity, indicating rejection. We conclude that the population studied seems to have a selective diet, preferring relatively large prey items that are less abundant in the leaf litter, and possibly avoiding potentially toxic prey.

OBJETIVOS: Determinar os fatores sociodemograficos, clinicos, funcionais e psicologicos associados a restricao de atividades por medo de cair em idosos comunitarios e identificar quais variaveis melhor discriminam os grupos em relacao a restricao de atividades por medo de cair. MÉTODOS: Cento e treze idosos comunitarios (74,5�±7 anos) participaram do estudo. Foram avaliados: restricao de atividades por medo de cair, historia de quedas, autoeficacia relacionada as quedas, fenotipo de fragilidade, aspectos sociodemograficos e clinicos, capacidade funcional, depressao e autopercepcao de saude. Estatisticas descritivas, teste qui-quadrado, ANOVA e o teste Kruskal-Wallis foram utilizados para analisar as relacoes entre a restricao de atividades por medo de cair e as outras variaveis. O metodo Chi-Square Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) foi utilizado para verificar quais variaveis melhor discriminavam os grupos em relacao a restricao de atividades (α=0,05). RESULTADOS: Idosos que relataram restricao de atividades por medo de cair apresentaram maior autorrelato de depressao (p=0,038), menor autoeficacia em relacao as quedas (p<0,001), menor velocidade de marcha (p=0,043) e nivel de independencia para realizacao de atividades instrumentais de vida diaria (p=0,017), maior numero de doencas (p=0,048), pior autopercepcao de saude (p=0,040) e maior presenca de sintomatologia depressiva (p=0,023). As variaveis que melhor discriminaram os grupos foram depressao (p=0,004), exaustao (fenotipo de fragilidade) (p=0,010) e participacao em atividades sociais (p=0,016). CONCLUSÃO: A restricao de atividades por medo de cair pode ter efeitos negativos na capacidade funcional e nos aspectos psicologicos de idosos comunitarios. Fatores psicossociais parecem discriminar melhor os idosos que apresentam restricao de atividades por medo de cair.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the social-demographic, clinical, functional and psychological factors associated to activity restriction due to fear of falling in community-dwelling elderly and identify which variables best discriminate groups of elderly with different levels of activity restriction and fear of falling. METHODS: One hundred and thirteen community-dwelling elderly (74.5±7 years old) participated in the study. Activity restriction induced by fear of falling, previous falls, fall related self-efficacy, frailty phenotype, functional capacity, depressive symptoms, health self-perception, socio-demographic and clinical factors were assessed. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests were used to analyze the associations between activity restriction due to fear of falling and all other variables. Path analysis (CHAID) method was used to verify which variables better discriminated groups in relation to activity restriction (α=0.05). RESULTS: The participants who reported fear of falling and activity restriction demonstrated higher depression (p=0.038), lower fall related self-efficacy (p<0.001), lower gait velocity (p=0.043) and independence level for instrumental daily living activities (p=0.017), higher number of diseases (p=0.048), worse health self-perception (p=0.040) and more depressive symptom (p=0.023). The best variables to discriminate groups were depression (p=0.004), exhaustion (frailty phenotype) (p=0.010) and social participation activities (p=0.016). CONCLUSION: Activity restriction due to fear of falling may have negative effects on functional capacity and psychological aspects in community-dwelling elderly. Psychosocial factors seem to better discriminate the elderly who avoid activities due to fear of falling.

O pinhão-manso (Jatropha curcas L.) é uma planta oleaginosa, adaptada às condições do semiárido brasileiro, com potencialidades para a produção de biodiesel. Com o objetivo de se avaliar parâmetros de crescimento e produção de pinhão-manso, em lisímetros de drenagem, conduziu-se um experimento em lisímetros de drenagem, em ambiente aberto, entre janeiro/2009 e janeiro/2010, na área experimental da Unidade Acadêmica de Engenharia Agrícola/CTRN/UFCG. Foram estudados os efeitos da salinidade da água de irrigação sobre variáveis de crescimento e de produção do pinhão-manso. Os tratamentos consistiram de cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (CEa: 0,6; 1,8; 3,0; 4,2 e 5,4 dS m-1), distribuídos no delineamento experimental em blocos inteiramente casualizados, com quatro repetições, sendo a parcela constituída de uma planta por lisímetro. A coleta de dados se estendeu no período de 210 aos 360 dias após o transplante; ao final do período de estudos, não se verificaram efeitos significativos dos tratamentos sobre altura de plantas e diâmetro caulinar. A produção de sementes foi afetada, significativamente, com coleta de maior quantidade nas plantas irrigadas com água de 2,28 dS m-1 de condutividade elétrica.

The jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) is an oleaginous plant, adapted to the brazilian semiarid conditions, with potentialities to produce biodiesel. Aiming to evaluate its growth and production parameters, an experiment was carried out in drainage lysimeters, between January/2009 and January/2010, in the experimental area of the Academic Unit of Agricultural Engineering of CTRN/UFCG. The effects of the saline irrigation water were studied on the growth and seed yield of jatropha. The treatments consisted of five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw: 0.6; 1.8; 3.0; 4.2 and 5.4 dS m-1), distributed in a completely randomized block design with four replications, being the plot constituted by one plant grown in each lysimeter. The study started on the 210 day up to 360 days after transplanting; at the end of the period, plant height and stem diameter were not significantly affected by salinity of irrigation treatments. On the other hand, the seed production was significantly affected, with the largest quantity produced by plants that received irrigation water with the electrical conductivity of 2.28 dS m-1.
