Abstract The spatial variability of physical properties, such as bulk density, penetration resistance and gravimetric moisture, obtained by applying geostatistics in precision agriculture, can effectively indicate the physical behavior of agricultural soils in longitudinal profiles. In this way, the spatial dependence of physical properties in streets of coffee plantations with different lengths was evaluated in the southern Minas Gerais, Brazil. For this purpose, five longitudinal profiles were measured in streets, each one with depths ranging from 0 to 0.60 m, in six layers of 0.10 m, being the database composed of 432 property, 144 by property, submitted to the ordinary kriging geostatistical method in order to obtain spatial variability maps using the R software. They were evaluated by the lower mean cross-validation error of theoretical models fitted by ordinary least squares (OLS), being detected in higher superficial layers, from 0 to 0.30 m, lower bulk density and lower penetration resistance, with variable gravimetric moisture in the length direction of some streets of coffee plantations, being that these properties presented different structures of spatial dependence for each street.

Oral tolerance blocks the development of specific immune responses to proteins ingested by the oral route. One of the first registries of oral tolerance showed that guinea pigs fed corn became refractory to hypersensitivity to corn proteins. Mice fed with chow containing corn are tolerant to zein, and parenteral injection of zein plus adjuvant blocks immunization to unrelated proteins injected concomitantly and reduces unspecific inflammation. Extensive and prolonged inflammatory infiltrate in the wound bed is one of the causes of pathological wound healing. Previous research shows that intraperitoneal injection of zein concomitant with skin injuries reduces the inflammatory infiltrate in the wound bed and improves wound healing. Herein, we tested if one subcutaneous injection of zein before skin injury improves wound healing. We also investigated how long the effects triggered by zein could improve skin wound healing. Mice fed zein received two excisional wounds on the interscapular skin under anesthesia. Zein plus Al(OH)3 was injected at the tail base at 10 min, or 3, 5, or 7 days before skin injuries. Wound healing was analyzed at days 7 and 40 after injury. Our results showed that a zein injection up to 5 days before skin injury reduced the inflammatory infiltrate, increased the number of T-cells in the wound bed, and improved the pattern of collagen deposition in the neodermis. These findings could promote the development of new strategies for the treatment and prevention of pathological healing using proteins normally found in the common diet.

RESUMO O resultado da artroplastia total do quadril (ATQ) em cães está diretamente relacionado ao planejamento cirúrgico. O templating radiográfico pré-operatório da ATQ deve ajudar o cirurgião a prever o tamanho da prótese e o formato do fêmur, o que permitirá um preenchimento ideal da metáfise proximal pelo implante, garantindo, assim, fixação primária estável. O índice de alargamento do canal (Canal Flare Index - CFI) obtido em radiografias tem sido utilizado como fator de risco de complicações para a técnica em humanos e cães. No entanto, as radiografias podem fornecer apenas dados limitados para a seleção de próteses não cimentadas e a avaliação do seu encaixe no canal femoral, devido a fatores como ampliação radiográfica e rotação femoral. Portanto, a avaliação tridimensional baseada na tomografia computadorizada (TC) pode ser uma ferramenta vantajosa para a mensuração do CFI. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a medida anatômica com os valores de CFI obtidos na radiografia craniocaudal e na TC. Radiografias craniocaudais utilizando feixe radiográfico horizontal (CR), tomografia computadorizada e medidas macroscópicas anatômicas (A) foram obtidas de 45 fêmures de 23 cadáveres caninos. As diferenças entre os valores de CFI obtidos na radiografia (CFI-R), na tomografia computadorizada no eixo transversal (CFI-TT) e no eixo longitudinal (CFI-TL), em comparação com os valores de CFI obtidos nas medições macroscópicas - padrão-ouro - (CFI-A) e os limites de concordância de 95% (LOA) entre os valores, foram avaliadas pelo método de Bland-Altman. As dimensões obtidas pelas técnicas de TC apresentaram maior diferença média dos valores anatômicos, e as do CFI também foram diferentes (P=0,032). Nas condições experimentais, a radiografia craniocaudal forneceu a medida mais precisa do CFI (diferença média: 0,087 ± 0,42) para representar o padrão-ouro deste estudo.

ABSTRACT The outcome of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in dogs is directly related to surgical planning. Templating of radiographs prior to THA should help the surgeon anticipate prosthesis size and femoral shape allowing canal fill of the proximal metaphysis by the implant ensuring primary stable fixation. The canal flare index (CFI) obtained from radiograph has been used as a measure of risk of complications for the technique in human beings and dogs. However, standard radiographs only provide limited data for the selection of cementless prostheses and the assessment of their fit within the femoral canal, due to factors like radiographic magnification and femoral rotation. Therefore, three-dimensional evaluation based on computed tomography (CT) may be a better tool for CFI measurement. The aim of this study was to compare anatomical measurement with CFI values obtained from craniocaudal radiography and CT. Craniocaudal radiographs using a horizontal radiographic beam (CR), CT, and anatomical macroscopic measurements (A) were obtained from 45 femurs from 23 canine cadavers. The differences between the values of CFI obtained from radiograph (CFI-R), computed tomography on transverse (CFI- TT) and longitudinal axis (CFI-TL) compared to the CFI obtained from macroscopic measurements - gold standard - (CFI-A), and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) between the values, were evaluated by the Bland-Altman method. Dimensions obtained from CT techniques had a greatest mean difference from anatomical and CFI values were also different (P=0.032). Under the experimental conditions, the craniocaudal radiograph, provided the most accurate measurement of the CFI (mean difference: 0.087 ± 0.42).

RESUMO O mamoeiro Carica papaya (L.) é acometido por diversos problemas fitossanitários, sendo o ácaro Tetranychus urticae (Koch, 1836) (Acari: Tetranychidae) uma das pragas-chave. A utilização de fungos entomopatogênicos é uma alternativa ao controle por agrotóxicos, reduzindo os riscos de resistência e também a carga de substâncias tóxicas ao ambiente. Este trabalho foi realizado para verificar se as diferentes cultivares de mamoeiro interferem na patogenicidade de Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae e Lecanicillium longisporum. No bioensaio foram utilizadas fêmeas adultas de T. urticae mantidas por pelo menos uma geração sobre folhas de quatro cultivares de mamão, Calimosa, Golden, Sunrise e Tainung 01, e também de uma testemunha de feijão-de-porco. Foram então transferidas dez fêmeas para placas de Petri com discos de folhas das respectivas cultivares de origem e de feijão-de-porco. Em seguida, os ácaros foram pulverizados com suspensões 5 x 107 conídios.mL-1 em Torre de Potter. As suspensões de conídios foram preparadas a partir das formulações comerciais: Boveril® B. bassiana; Metarril® M. anisopliae; Vertirril® L. longisporum. Foi avaliada a mortalidade corrigida e confirmada. Foram observadas diferenças (Tukey, P < 0,05) entre as cultivares na resposta patogênica de T. urticae. Para o 3° DAP, uma melhor eficiência em porcentagem de mortalidade foi observada para o formulado Vertirril® aplicado nas cultivares Calimosa, Golden e Sunrise, e para Metarril® na cultivar Tainung 01. Para o 5° DAP, as eficiências entre as cultivares foram muito próximas.

ABSTRACT Papaya Carica papaya (L.) is affected by various phytosanitary problems, and the mite Tetranychus urticae (Koch, 1836) (Acari: Tetranychidae) is a key pest. The use of entomopathogenic fungi is an alternative to the use of pesticides, lowering the risk of resistance while reducing the the load of toxic substances in the environment. This study was conducted to determine whether the different cultivars of papaya interfere with the pathogenicity of Beauveria bassiana. Metarhizium anisopliae and Lecanicillium longisporum. The bioas say was carried out using adult T. urticae females maintained for at least one generation on leaves of four papaya cultivars (Calimosa, Golden, Sunrise, Tainung 01) or on jack bean leaves (control). Ten females were transferred to Petri dishes with leaf disks of the origin cultivars and jack beans. The mites were then sprayed with a 5 x 107 conidia.mL-1 suspension in a Potter Tower. Conidial suspensions were prepared from the commercial formulations Boveril® B. bassiana, Metarril® M. anisopliae, and Vertirril® L. longisporum. The corrected and confirmed mortalities were evaluated. Differences were observed (Tukey, P < 0.05) among the papaya cultivars in terms of the T. urticae pathogenic response. On the 3rd day after spraying (DAS), a better efficiency in mortality percentage was observed for the Vertirril® formulation applied to the Calimosa, Golden and Sunrise cultivars, and for Metarril® applied to the Tainung 01cultivar. On the 5th DAS, the efficiencies among the cultivars were very close.

RESUMO Diaphania hyalinata (L., 1758) é uma das principais pragas de Cucurbitacea e ênfase tem sido dada ao controle biológico desta praga em substituição ao controle químico. A compatibilidade de agentes de controle biológico foi avaliada pelo desempenho de fêmeas de Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner, 1983 e Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, 1879 em ovos de D. hyalinata pulverizados com os fungos entomopatogênicos Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsh.) Sorok, 1883 e Beauveria bassiana (Balls.) Vuill. Vinte ovos de D. hyalinata foram imersos em suspensão de Metarril®, Boveril® e água destilada (testemunha) e oferecidos diariamente para o parasitismo por 24h até a morte dos parasitoides. Foram avaliados o parasitismo diário, acumulado e total, número de ovos parasitados, viabilidade, razão sexual e longevidade. Os fungos entomopatogênicos M. anisopliae e B. bassiana não afetaram as características reprodutivas e de sobrevivência das duas espécies do gênero Trichogramma, sendo que T. pretiosum apresentou maior parasitismo que T. atopovirilia em ovos de D. hyalinata. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho mostram que é possível a integração de T. atopovirilia e os fungos entomopatogênicos M. anisopliae e B. bassiana em programas de manejo integrado de pragas de cucurbitáceas.

ABSTRACT Diaphania hyalinata (L., 1758) is one of the most important pests of the Cucurbitacae, and biological control is an alternative method to replace chemicals. Compatibility between biological control agents was evaluated measuring the performance of females of Trichogramma atopovirilia and Trichogramma pretiosum in eggs of Diaphania hyalinata treated with the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizim anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana. Twenty eggs of D. hyalinata were immersed in a suspension of Metarri®, Boveril® and distilled water (control) and offered daily for the parasitism for 24 hours until the death of the parasitoids. Evaluation was made of the daily, accumulated and total parasitism, number of parasitized eggs, viability, sex ratio and longevity. The formulations of M. anisopliae and B. bassiana did not affect the reproductive characteristics and survival of the two species of Trichogramma, and T. pretiosumshowed higher parasitism thanT. atopovirilia in eggs of D. hyalinata. The results obtained in this work showed that it is possible to integrate the use ofT. atopoviriliaand theentomopathogenic fungi M. anisopliae and B. bassiana in cucurbit IPM systems.

Chronic allograft nephropathy is among the major causes of graft loss even in low-risk kidney transplant recipients and correlates with acute nephrotoxic events during the first year post-transplant. Therefore, calcineurin inhibitor-free regimens may improve patient and graft survival among recipients of living-related kidney transplants. To confirm this hypothesis, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of two calcineurin inhibitor-free regimens in 92 low-risk recipients of one-haplotype living-related kidney transplants. Immunosuppression consisted of tacrolimus, azathioprine and prednisone (group I, GI, N = 38), 2 doses of daclizumab, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), and prednisone (GII, N = 33) and 2 doses of daclizumab, MMF, sirolimus and prednisone (GIII, N = 21). At 12 months, treatment failure (biopsy-confirmed acute rejection, graft loss or death) was higher in GII compared to GIII and GI (54.5 vs 24.0 vs 13.1%, P < 0.01, respectively). In patients of black ethnicity the incidence of acute rejection was 25 vs 83.3 vs 20% (P = 0.055), respectively. Patient and graft survival was comparable. There were no differences in mean creatinine or calculated creatinine clearance at 12 months. Overall incidence of post-transplant diabetes mellitus (3.3%) and cytomegalovirus disease (4.3%) was similar in all groups. Further development of effective calcineurin inhibitor-free regimens should exclude patients of black ethnicity and may need full-induction therapy, perhaps with depleting agents, and concentration-controlled use of sirolimus and MMF.

We conducted a retrospective analysis of the influence of full doses of calcineurin inhibitors [8-10 mg kg-1 day-1 cyclosporine (N = 80), or 0.2-0.3 mg kg-1 day-1 tacrolimus (N = 68)] administered from day 1 after transplantation on the transplant outcomes of a high-risk population. Induction therapy was used in 13% of the patients. Patients also received azathioprine (2 mg kg-1 day-1, N = 58) or mycophenolate mofetil (2 g/day, N = 90), and prednisone (0.5 mg kg-1 day-1, N = 148). Mean time on dialysis was 79 ± 41 months, 12% of the cases were re-transplants, and 21% had panel reactive antibodies >10%. In 43% of donors the cause of death was cerebrovascular disease and 27% showed creatinine above 1.5 mg/dL. The incidence of slow graft function (SGF) and delayed graft function (DGF) was 15 and 60%, respectively. Mean time to last dialysis and to nadir creatinine were 18 ± 15 and 34 ± 20 days, respectively. Mean creatinine at 1 year after transplantation was 1.48 ± 0.50 mg/dL (DGF 1.68 ± 0.65 vs SGF 1.67 ± 0.66 vs immediate graft function (IGF) 1.41 ± 0.40 mg/dL, P = 0.089). The incidence of biopsy-confirmed acute rejection was 22% (DGF 31%, SGF 10%, IGF 8%). One-year patient and graft survival was 92.6 and 78.4%, respectively. The incidence of cytomegalovirus disease, post-transplant diabetes mellitus and malignancies was 28, 8.1, and 0%, respectively. Compared to previous studies, the use of initial full doses of calcineurin inhibitors without antibody induction in patients with SGF or DGF had no negative impact on patient and graft survival.

A doença de Aujeszky ou pseudoraiva (DA), causada pelo vírus da pseudoraiva (PRV) é a maior preocupação na produção de suínos. No estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, a DA foi somente detectada em 1954, em bovino. Em 2003, ocorreram dois surtos de encefalite em granjas na região norte do estado, fronteira com o estado de Santa Catarina. O vírus da doença de Aujeszky (VDA) foi isolado a partir de animais coletados em oito granjas distintas da região e submetido a análises antigênicas e moleculares. As amostras de VDA isoladas foram comparadas com as amostras padrão NIA-3 e NP. A caracterização antigênica dos mesmos foi realizada com testes de imunoperoxidase frente a um painel de anticorpos mono-clonais (Mabs) preparado contra epitopos de glicoproteinas virais (gB, gC, gD e gE). A caracterização genômica foi realizada através da análise restrição enzimática (REA) sobre o genoma total das amostras, com a enzima de restrição (REA) Bam HI. O perfil antigênico das oito amostras isoladas no Rio Grande do Sul, bem como os apresentados pelas amostras padrão NIA-3 e NP, foram similares. A REA revelou que todos as oito amostras do Rio Grande do Sul apresentaram um arranjo genômico do tipo II, genótipo frequentemente encontrado em surtos prévios de DA em outros estados do Brasil. Os resultados aqui obtidos indicam que as oito amostras isoladas no Rio Grande do Sul são similares.

Pseudorabies or Aujeszky's disease (AD), caused by pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a major concern in swine production. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, AD was only detected in 1954, in cattle. In 2003 two outbreaks of encephalitis occurred on the northern region of the state, close to the border with the state of Santa Catarina. Pseudorabies virus (PRV) was isolated from distinct farms within the region and subjected to antigenic and genomic analyses. These isolates were compared with prototype strains NIA-3 and NP. Antigenic characterization with a panel of monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) directed to viral glycoproteins (gB, gC, gD and gE,) was performed by an imunoperoxidase monolayer assay (IPMA) on infected cell monolayers. Genomic characterization was carried out by restriction enzyme analysis (REA) of the whole DNA viral genome with Bam HI. The antigenic profile of the eight isolates from Rio Grande do Sul as well as strains NIA-3 and NP were similar. REA analysis revealed that all isolates from Rio Grande do Sul displayed a genomic type II arrangement, a genotype often found in other outbreaks of AD previously reported in other Brazilian states. The results obtained suggest that the eight isolates examined here were similar.

The use of sirolimus (SRL) in combination with full doses of cyclosporin A (CsA) results in reduced one-year kidney allograft function, which is associated with shorter long-term allograft survival. We determined the effect of reduced CsA exposure on graft function in patients receiving SRL and prednisone. Ninety recipients of living kidney transplants receiving SRL (2 mg/day, po) were compared to 35 recipients receiving azathioprine (AZA, 2 mg kg-1 day-1, po). All patients also received CsA (8-10 mg kg-1 day-1, po) and prednisone (0.5 mg kg-1 day-1). Efficacy end-point was a composite of biopsy-confirmed acute rejection, graft loss, or death at one year. Graft function was measured by creatinine, creatinine clearance, and graft function deterioration between 3 and 12 months (delta1/Cr). CsA concentrations in patients receiving SRL were 26% lower. No differences in one-year composite efficacy end-point were observed comparing SRL and AZA groups (18 vs 20%) or in the incidence of biopsy-proven acute rejection (14.4 and 14.3%). There were no differences in mean ± SD creatinine (1.65 ± 0.46 vs 1.60 ± 0.43 mg/dl, P = 0.48) or calculated creatinine clearances (61 ± 15 vs 62 ± 13 ml/min, P = 0.58) at one year. Mean ± SD delta1/Cr (-11 ± 17 vs -14 ± 15%, P = 0.7) or the percentage of patients with >20% (26 vs 31%, P = 0.6) or >30% delta1/Cr (19 vs 17%, P = 1) did not differ between the two groups. The use of 2-mg fixed oral doses of SRL and reduced CsA exposure was effective in preventing acute rejection and preserving allograft function.
