RESUMO: Os constituintes do extrato hidroetanólico da raiz deA. indicaforam investigados por cromatografia líquida de ultra-alta performance acoplada à espectrometria de massas do tipo quadrupolo-tempo de voo (UPLC-QTOOF-MSE). A toxicidade aguda foi avaliada em modelo animal. Investigamos as atividades antibacterianas contra Salmonella typhimuriumeStaphylococcus aureuse as atividades antifúngicas contra cepas deTrichophyton rubrum, Candida albicanseCandida tropicalis. Identificamos nove metabólitos secundários no extrato etanólico por UPLC-QTOOF-MSE. O extrato foi altamente eficaz na inibição do crescimento de cepas de T. rubrum, podendo ser eficaz no combate ao dermatofito avaliado, mas não apresentou potencial de inibição em nenhuma cepa bacteriana ou espécies deCandidaavaliadas. Também foi possível inferir que o extrato não apresentou toxicidade aguda em relação ao modelo animalDanio rerio. Portanto, como o Neem tem alto potencial bioativo e se adapta bem ao clima das regiões semiáridas, o cultivo dessa espécie pode se tornar uma fonte de renda para os agricultores a partir da utilização da planta para produção de fungicida e/ou fármaco naturais como alternativa aos produtos convencionais, que podem causar resistência microbiológica e/ou são tóxicas ao meio ambiente, além de serem caros.

ABSTRACT: The constituents of the hydroethanolic extract ofAzadiractaindicaroot were investigated using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOOF-MSE). Acute toxicity was evaluated in an experimental animal model. We investigated the antibacterial activities ofA. indicaroots againstSalmonella typhimuriumandStaphylococcus aureusand the antifungal activities against strains ofTrichophyton rubrum, Candida albicansandCandida tropicalis. We identified nine secondary metabolites in the hydroethanolic extract by UPLC-QTOOF-MSE. The extract was highly effective in inhibiting the growth of T. rubrum strains, so it can be effective in combating the dermatophyte tested,but it had no inhibition potential on any bacterial strains orCandidaspecies evaluated. It was possible to infer that the extract had no acute toxicity in relation to the animal model Danio rerio. Therefore, since neem has a high bioactive potential and adapts well to the climate of semiarid regions, growing this species could become a source of income for farmers by its use to produce naturals fungicide and drug, as alternatives to conventional products, which can cause microbiological resistance and/or are toxic to the environment, besides being expensive.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical profile, total phenol content and the antioxidant, antiacetylcholinesterase and antifungal activities of ethanol extracts from leaves (EEF) and stem (EEC) of five species of Senna, as well as to evaluate the correlation between the content of total phenols with the DPPH free radical scavenging activity and with the inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase AChEI enzyme. The phytochemical test showed the presence of secondary metabolites in all extracts. The EEF and EEC of Senna trachypus, stood out for presenting the highest values of total phenols. S. trachypus EEF and EEC showed the best action on the acetylcholinesterase enzyme. All species showed antioxidant activity, especially the EEF from S. trachypus. A strong correlation was observed for the variables total phenols and antioxidant activity (r = -0.71), very strong for total phenols and anti-acetylcholinesterase (r = -0.84) and moderate activity for antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase activity (r = 0.43). Only S. trachypus extracts showed activity against all dermatophytes, when compared to the other species. The species S. trachypus was considered the most promising plant for further studies, in order to find compounds with pharmacological actions.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o perfil químico, teor de fenóis totais e as atividades antioxidante, antiacetilcolinesterásica e antifúngica dos extratos etanólicos das folhas (EEF) e do caule (EEC) de cinco espécies de Senna, bem como avaliar a correlação entre o conteúdo de fenóis totais com a atividade sequestradora do radical livre DPPH e com a inibição da enzima acetilcolinesterase AChEI. No teste fitoquímico, evidenciou-se a presença de metabólitos secundários em todos os extratos. Os EEF e EEC de Senna trachypus, destacaram-se por apresentar os maiores valores de fenóis totais. Os EEF e EEC de S. trachypus mostraram a melhor ação sobre a enzima acetilcolinesterase. Todas as espécies apresentaram atividade antioxidante, em especial o EEF de S. trachypus. Foi observado correlação forte para as variáveis fenóis totais e atividade antioxidante (rnbsp;=nbsp;-0,71), muito forte para fenóis totais e antiacetilcolinesterase (rnbsp;=nbsp;-0,84) e atividade moderada para atividade antioxidante e antiacetilcolinesterase (0,43). Apenas os extratos de S. trachypus apresentaram atividade contra todos os dermatófitos, quando comparado às demais espécies. A espécie S. trachypus foi considerada a planta mais promissora para estudos subsequentes, a fim de encontrar compostos com ações farmacológicas.

RESUMO Dermatófitos são fungos hialinos que parasitam o tecido queratinizado de humanos e animais causando infecções fúngicas. Os produtos naturais são moléculas promissoras para o desenvolvimento de novos fármacos antifúngicos, devido ao fenômeno de resistência e a toxicidade. Este estudo relata o isolamento e a identificação do éster lacnofilum e avalia sua atividade antioxidante, antifúngica e modulatória contra fungos dermatófitos. O éster lacnofilum foi obtido por cromatografia em coluna de sílica gel do óleo essencial das partes aéreas da Baccharis trinervis e analisado por cromatografia gasosa/espectrometria de massa. A atividade antimicrobiana foi determinada pelo método de microdiluição em caldo. Os ensaios de atividade modulatória foram realizados pela técnica de checkerboard, utilizando éster lacnofilum e cetoconazol como padrão. O éster lacnofilum exibiu boa atividade antioxidante, medida pelo sistema β-caroteno/ácido linoléico, com taxa de inibição de 71,43% ± 0,01%. Além disso, mostrou atividade antifúngica contra as cepas de Trichophyton rubrum e Microsporum canis. No ensaio modulatório, a interação entre éster lacnofilum e cetoconazol foi sinérgica, reduzindo os valores concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) do antifúngico e modulando sua ação antifúngica contra cepas de dermatófitos. Em conclusão, o éster lacnofilum demonstrou atuar como um composto antioxidante natural, bem como uma alternativa antimicrobiana contra fungos dermatófitos do gênero Trichophyton e Microsporum.

ABSTRACT Dermatophytes are hyaline fungi that parasitize the keratinized tissue of humans and animals causing mycotic infections. Natural products are promising molecules for the development of new antifungal drugs, due to the phenomenon of resistance and toxicity. This study reports the isolation and identification of lachnophyllum ester and evaluates its antioxidant, antifungal and modulatory activities against dermatophytes fungi. Lachnophyllum ester was obtained using a silica gel column chromatography of the essential oil from the aerial parts of Baccharis trinervis and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial activity was determined by the broth microdilution method. The modulatory activity assays were performed by the checkerboard technique using lachnophyllum ester and ketoconazole as standard. The lachnophyllum ester exhibited good antioxidant activity as measured by a β-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching system, with 71.43% ± 0.01% inhibition rate. In addition, it showed antifungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum canis strains. In the modulatory assay, interaction between lachnophyllum ester and ketoconazole was synergistic, reducing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the antifungal drug and modulating its antifungal action against dermatophyte strains. In conclusion, lachnophyllum ester has been shown to act as a natural antioxidant compound, as well as an antimicrobial alternative against dermatophyte fungi of the genus Trichophyton and Microsporum.

RESUMO Este artigo de revisão reporta ao estudo químico e farmacológico de metabolitos secundários isolados de 20 espécies do gênero Zanthoxylum Linnaeus. Os constituintes químicos voláteis e fixos das espécies desse gênero foram isolados e caracterizados por métodos analíticos. Esta revisão foi realizada através da busca organizada de Dissertações de Mestrado, Teses de Doutorado e principalmente artigos científicos publicados sobre estudos fotoquímicos e atividades antimicrobianas das espécies do gênero Zanthoxylum disponíveis nos Periódicos CAPES, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Scielo e Google Acadêmico entre 1985 e 2019. As espécies apresentaram composição química diversificada onde predominam alcaloides, terpenos e cumarinas com diferentes tipos de atividades antimicrobianas, tais como: antifúngica, antibiótica, antiprotozoário e antiviral.

ABSTRACT This review covers the documentation of the isolated and biologically active chemical constituents of 20 species of the genus Zanthoxylum Linnaeus distributed all over the world. The species extracts and oils chemical constituents were isolated and characterized by different analytical methods. This review was carried out through the survey of the Master’s Dissertations, Doctoral Theses and mainly published scientific articles about the biological activity and phytochemical characterization of Zanthoxylum species, available at in the CAPES, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Scielo and Google Scholar databases from 1985 to 2019. The species presented a diverse chemical composition in which alkaloids, terpenes and coumarins predominate. In addition, those chemical compounds perform different types of biological activity for the plant, such as larvicidal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antinociceptive, antioxidant, antibiotic, hepatoprotective, antiplasmodial, cytotoxic, antiproliferative, anthelmintic, antiviral and antifungal.

Abstract: This article describes the chemical composition of Vernonia chalybaea essential oil, and investigates its antimicrobial, antioxidant and hemolytic activities. The evaluation of the antifungal activity was performed by the broth microdilution method using strains of yeasts and dermatophytic fungi. The checkerboard technique to find antimicrobial modulatory effects was performed using ketoconazole as standard drug. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH scavenging assay and β-carotene/linoleic-acid system. The toxicity was characterized by the brine shrimp lethality test and hemolysis bioassays. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-MS method, showing to be rich in the sesquiterpenes β-caryophyllene (39.06%) and bicyclogermacrene (19.69%), and also demonstrated a relevant antifungal activity against strains of Trichophyton rubrum. In the modulatory activity assay, the essential oil of V. chalybaea and β-caryophyllene demonstrated a synergistic interaction with ketoconazole, with increasing of its antifungal action. The antioxidant activity was evidenced mainly by β-carotene/linoleic acid system, with IC50 value of 35.87 ± 0.32 µg/mL. The results suggest that V. chalybaea essential oil and β-caryophyllene are valuable natural medicinal agents with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

RESUMO Compostos químicos com atividades biológicas isolados de espécies vegetais e usados pela população por meio de extratos e óleo essencial são promissoras fontes de prospecção de novos fármacos. O gênero Myroxylon L. f. apresenta elevado potencial farmacológico, sendo usado na medicina popular para o tratamento de diversas enfermidades, tais como feridas, catarros, úlceras, dores de cabeça e de ouvido. Este artigo de revisão apresenta as principais características fitoquímicas e farmacológicas das espécies do gênero Myroxylon (M. peruiferum L.f., M. balsamum (L.) Harms e M. pereirae (Royle) Klotzsch), cujos estudos de atividades biológicas são promissores.

ABSTRACT Chemical compounds with biological activities isolated from plant and used by the population through extracts and essential oils are promising sources of prospection for new drugs. The genus Myroxylon L. f. showed high pharmacological potential being used in popular medicine for the treatment of various diseases such as wounds, colds, ulcers, headache, and ear infections. This review article presents the main phytochemical and pharmacological characteristics of the species of Myroxylon (M. peruiferum L.f., M. balsamum (L.) Harms and M. pereirae (Royle) Klotzsch), whose studies of biological activities are promising.

RESUMO A resistência ao uso de drogas antifúngicas é uma grande preocupação para os cientistas, que buscam descobrir novos produtos para tratar infecções fúngicas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as atividades antioxidantes e antifúngicas de óleos essenciais e extratos de Plectranthus grandis e Plectranthus ornatus contra Trichophyton rubrum e Microsporum canis, fungos dermatófitos. Extratos foram obtidos a partir de folhas por maceração em etanol (96%) durante 7 dias. Os óleos essenciais foram obtidos por hidrodestilação e analisados por cromatografia gasosa/espectrometria de massa. Um total de 25 componentes foram identificados, como constituintes principais, os sesquiterpenos β-cariofileno, a-copaene, germacrene, β-cariofileno e óxido de cariofileno. As atividades antioxidantes foram avaliadas usando o teste de eliminação de DPPH e a ação antifúngica foi determinada pelo método de microdiluição de caldo. Os decoctos obtidos a partir da extração de óleo essencial apresentaram uma maior ação antioxidante quando comparados com os óleos essenciais, com valores de IC50 de 12,35 μg/mL e 15,69 μg/mL para P. ornatus e P. grandis, respectivamente. Os produtos naturais apresentaram atividade antifúngica significativa, com valores de MIC variando de 0,078 mg/mL a 0,31 mg/mL para todas as cepas. A atividade de sinergismo entre extratos de Plectranthus spp. e cetoconazol demonstrou uma ação de inibição do crescimento fúngico, quando da combinação com um fármaco antifúngico padrão, indicando seu potencial de uso em medicina veterinária preventiva para tratar dermatofitoses.

SUMMARY Resistance to use antifungal drugs is a great concern seeking for scientists to discover new products to treat fungal infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antifungal activities of essential oils and extracts of Plectranthus grandis and Plectranthus ornatus against Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum canis dermatophytes strains. Extracts were obtained from leaves by maceration in ethanol (96%) during 7 days. The oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A total of 25 components were identified, as major constituents the sesquiterpenes β-caryophyllene, α-copaene, germacrene, β-caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide. Antioxidant activities were evaluated using DPPH scavenging assay and antifungal action was determined by the broth microdilution method. The decocts obtained from the extraction of essential oil presented a greater antioxidant action when compared with the essential oils, with IC50 values of 12.35 μg/mL and 15.69 μg/mL to P. ornatus and P. grandis, respectively. Natural products presented significant antifungal activity, with MIC values ranging from 0.078 mg/mL to 0.31 mg/mL for all strains. The synergistic activity between Plectranthus spp. extracts and ketoconazole demonstrated a fungal growth inhibitory action when combined with a standard antifungal drug, indicating its potential for use in preventive veterinary medicine to treat dermatophytoses.

RESUMO Este trabalho descreve a composição química e a atividade anti-Candida spp. de óleos essenciais de folhas de diversos cultivares de Mangifera indica. Os óleos essenciais foram obtidos por meio de hidrodestilação e analisados por cromatografia de gás acoplada à espectrometria de massa. A atividade anti-Candida spp. foi avaliada contra cepas isoladas de cães pelo método de difusão em ágar e a concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) pelo método de microdiluição em caldo. O cultivar Tommy Atkins apresentou β-selineno (29.49%), óxido de cariofileno (12.40%) e humuleno II epoxido (8.66%) como seus constituintes principais, enquanto que os principais componentes das variedades Rosa, Moscatel e Jasmim foram óxido de cariofileno (23,62, 48,42 e 30,77%, respectivamente) e humuleno II epoxido (11,56, 23,45 e 16,27%, respectivamente). As médias de zona de inibição foram 11 ± 0,71, 13,5 ± 3,54, 10,5 ± 0,71 e 13,5 ± 0,71mm respectivamente para os cultivares Tommy Atkins, Rosa, Moscatel e Jasmim. Para a variedade Tommy Atkins, a CIM variou de 0,62 a 1,25 mg/mL; para Rosa, 0.31 a 1.25 mg/mL; para Jasmim os valores variaram de 0,31 a 0,62 mg/mL; ao passo que para a variedade Moscatel o valor de CIM foi 1,25 mg/mL para todas as cepas de Candida spp. Os óleos essenciais das quatro variedades de M. indica foram ativos in vitro contra Candida spp., demonstrando boa atividade antifúngica, podendo ser uma fonte útil de compostos antifúngicos para uso na medicina veterinária.

SUMMARY This work reports the chemical study, and anti-Candida spp. activity of leaf essential oil from Mangifera indica cultivars. The essential oils were obtained by hydro-distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. The anti-Candida spp. activity was evaluated against strains isolated from dogs by the agar-well diffusion method and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by the broth microdilution method. Tommy Atkins cultivar presented β–selinene (29.49%), caryophyllene oxide (12.40%) and humulene II epoxide (8.66%) as main constituents, while the main constituents of Rosa, Moscatel and Jasmim varieties were caryophyllene oxide (23.62, 48.42 and 30.77%, respectively) and humulene epoxide II (11.56, 23.45, and16.27%, respectively). The means of inhibition zones were 11 ± 0.71, 13.5 ± 3.54, 10.5 ± 0.71 and 13.5 ± 0.71mm to Tommy Atkins, Rosa, Moscatel and Jasmim varieties, respectively. For Tommy Atkins, the MIC ranged from 0.62 to 1.25 mg/mL; for Rosa, ranged from 0.31 to 1.25 mg/mL; for Jasmim ranged from 0.31 to 0.62 mg/mL; while for the Moscatel variety the MIC value was 1.25 mg/mL for all Candida strains. Essential oils of four M. indica cultivars were active in vitro against Candida spp., demonstrating good antifungal activity and can be a useful source of antifungal compounds for veterinary medicine.

RESUMO O crescente número de doenças infecciosas somado ao aumento contínuo da resistência antimicrobiana de determinados micro-organismos justificam a busca constante por novos fármacos. Diante dessa situação, os vegetais representam uma fonte rica de recursos bioativos de interesse farmacológico, dentre os quais a família Verbenaceae, que possui representantes com potencial já confirmados contra diversos agentes patogênicos, especialmente o gênero Lippia L., cujas espécies são muito utilizadas na medicina popular por possuírem propriedades anti-inflamatória, antifúngica, antisséptica, anti-hipertensiva, ansiolítica, anti-leishmania, antiviral, digestivas, entre outras aplicações. A presente revisão reúne informações acerca do potencial antimicrobiano das principais espécies do gênero Lippia, relacionando ao tipo de extrato, seus constituintes e a importância desse gênero dentro da prospecção de produtos naturais, bem como suas características fitoquímicas e biológicas.

ABSTRACT The growing number of infectious diseases combined with the continuous increase of antimicrobial resistance of certain microorganisms justify the constant search for new drugs. Given this situation, plants are a rich source of bioactive resources of pharmacological interest. The Verbenaceae family, especially the genus Lippia L., has representatives with potential already confirmed against various pathogens; the species of Lippia are widely used in folk medicine for their anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiseptic, anti-hypertensive, anxiolytic, anti-leishmania, antiviral, and digestive properties, among other applications. This review gathers information about the antimicrobial potential of the main species of the genus Lippia, relating to the type of extract, its constituents, and the importance of this genus in the investigation of natural products and their phytochemical and biological characteristics.

RESUMO O extrato bruto e frações proteicas de sementes de Hymenaea courbaril foram investigados para a presença de inibidores de tripsina e papaína e atividade antimicrobiana contra Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus e Escherichia coli. As frações foram obtidas após precipitação do extrato bruto com sulfato de amônio em três faixas de saturação (0-30%, 30-60% e 60-90%) e denominadas Hc030, Hc3060 e Hc6090, respectivamente. O extrato bruto e as frações apresentaram diferente especificidade em inibir a atividade da tripsina e papaína. A atividade antimicrobiana foi observada nas frações Hc030 e Hc3060 e somente contra V. parahaemolyticus. O inibidor isolado a partir de Hc3060 foi mais eficiente na inibição da tripsina (100% de inibição) do que da papaína (54% de inibição), e mostrou uma massa molecular aparente de 20 kDa. Este estudo mostra que as sementes de H. courbaril possuem inibidores de proteases e proteínas com atividade antibacteriana, indicando que a espécie é uma fonte de compostos bioativos.

ABSTRACT The crude extract and protein fractions of Hymenaea courbaril L. seeds were investigated for the presence of trypsin and papain inhibitors and antimicrobial activity against Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Protein fractions were obtained from the crude extract after precipitation with ammonium sulfate into three saturation ranges (0-30%, 30-60%, and 60-90%), called Hc030, Hc3060, and Hc6090, respectively. The crude extract and protein fractions inhibited trypsin and papain activity, but to different degrees. Antimicrobial activity was observed in Hc030 and Hc3060 fractions, but only against V. parahaemolyticus.The inhibitor isolated from the Hc3060 fraction was more effective in inhibiting trypsin (100% inhibition) than papain (54% inhibition), and showed an apparent molecular mass of 20 kDa. This study shows that H. courbaril seeds contain proteins with protease-inhibiting and antibacterial activity, indicating that this species is a source of bioactive compounds.

O gênero Candida é composto por leveduras que vivem como comensais na microbiota de homens e animais. Em geral, não causam nenhum dano aos seus hospedeiros, entretanto, em virtude de desequilíbrios nas defesas química, física e imunológica, esses microrganismos podem se tornar patogênicos. Infecções por Candida spp. são pouco frequentes na Medicina Veterinária no entanto, nos últimos anos, tem sido observado aumento considerável de relatos de enfermidades causadas por essas leveduras, acometendo diferentes animais. Várias espécies do gênero são implicadas em quadros infecciosos, sendo a C. albicans a principal delas, seguida por C. tropicalis e C. parapsilosis. Considerando-se o potencial patogênico do gênero Candida, aliado ao surgimento de cepas resistentes a derivados azólicos, in vitro, o presente trabalho se propôs a realizar detalhada revisão de literatura, abordando os aspectos clínico-laboratoriais, etiológicos e terapêuticos da candidose na Medicina Veterinária.

The Candida genus is composed by yeasts that live as commmensal on human and animals' microbiota. In general, they do not cause any damage to their hosts. However, due instability on chemical, physical and immunological defenses, these microorganisms can become pathogens. Candida spp. infections are rare on Veterinary Medicine. However, on the last years, a considerable raise of illness caused by these yeasts has been related on varied animal species. Several species of this genus has been mentioned as responsible for infectious diseases in animals, being C. albicans the main of them, followed by C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis. Considering the pathogenic role of the genus Candida, allied to the emerging of resistant strains to the azole derivatives, in vitro, the present research proposed to perform a detailed review, approaching clinic-laboratorial, etiologic and therapeutic aspects of the candidosis on Veterinary medicine.
