Abstract: Sugarcane is an important Brazilian commodity, being usually cultivated in soils with low natural fertility. This study aimed to isolate diazotrophic endophytes from sugarcane tissues and evaluate the morphological and physiological characteristics of their colonies as well as their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits in select diazotrophic endophytic bacteria. Fifty-six bacterial isolates were identified in the sugarcane tissues, and these isolates presented distinct morphological and physiological traits. A total of thirty-five bacterial isolates were biochemically evaluated. Overall, Bacillus was the dominant genus. Isolates of Methylobacterium spp. and Brevibacillus agri were present only in leaves, while Herbaspirillum seropedicae occurred only in stems. Except to IPA-CF45A, all isolates were nitrogenase positive. All endophytes exhibit production of indol 3-acetic acid. Over 50% of endophytes solubilize phosphate, release N-acyl homoserine lactones, and present the activity of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase, catalase, lipase and protease. The network analysis showed that isolates belonged to Burkholderia, Herbaspirillum, and Methylobacterium interact with Bacillus. Bacterial endophytes exhibited distinct morphological, physiological, and PGP traits that are useful for sustainable agriculture, highlighting the isolates IPA-CC33, IPA-CF65, IPA-CC9 and IPA-CF27. Further studies on the effects of these diazotrophic endophytes and their potential for providing microbial inoculants for improving sugarcane fields will provide valuable information to maintain the sustainability and environment quality.

RESUMO: Este estudo avaliou a atividade de isolados de rizóbios inoculados em sementes pequenas (11 mm) e grandes (18 mm) sobre o crescimento, nodulação e fixação de N de feijão-fava. Isolados selecionados de rizóbios foram comparados com uma estirpe de referência CIAT899 e dois controles sem inoculação. Sementes grandes contribuíram para maior crescimento de plantas, nodulação e fixação de N do que sementes pequenas. Os isolados UFPI-59, UFPI-18 e UFPI-38 promoveram os maiores valores de massa seca de parte aérea e raízes. Os isolados UFPI-32 e UFPI-59 promoveram os maiores valores de número e massa de nódulos, respectivamente. Os isolados UFPI-38 e UFPI-59 promoveram maior acúmulo de N. Este estudo mostrou que o tamanho de sementes influencia o crescimento, nodulação e fixação de N em feijão-fava. Considerando os isolados de rizóbios, UFPI-59, UFPI-38 e UFPI-18 contribuíram para o crescimento de plantas, promoveram melhor nodulação e eficiência na fixação de N.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the activity of rhizobia isolates inoculated in large (18 mm) and small (11 mm) seeds on lima bean growth, nodulation and N fixation. Selected rhizobia isolates were compared with a reference strain CIAT899 and two controls without inoculation. Large seeds contributed for highest plant growth, nodulation and N fixation than small seeds. The isolates UFPI-59, UFPI-18 and UFPI-38 promoted the highest values of shoot and root dry weight, respectively. The isolates UFPI-32 promoted the highest values of nodule number, while UFPI-59 promoted the highest values of nodule dry weight. The isolates UFPI-38 and UFPI-59 promoted the highest accumulation of N. This study showed that seed size really influences lima bean growth, nodulation and BNF. Considering rhizobia isolates, UFPI-59, UFPI-38, and UFPI-18 contributed for plant growth, promoted better nodulation and effectiveness on biological N fixation.

Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) is an important species of the genus Phaseolus for human consumption in tropical regions. The seeds are important source of protein for people from South America, Africa and Mexico. In addition, as a legume plant, lima bean presents the ability to perform the biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) through the symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The studies about diversity and efficiency of lima bean-rhizobia symbiosis have increased worldwide, mainly in Latin America. These studies have shown Bradyrhizobium and Rhizobium as the main symbionts, although Sinorhizobium, Mesorhizobium and Allorhizobium have been found associated with lima bean. Also, there is a large variation in the efficiency of N fixation by the current isolates of rhizobia and some rhizobia have presented high capability for fixing N. This review aims to explore the studies about diversity and efficiency of rhizobia in symbiosis with lima bean.

El frijol de lima (Phaseolus lunatus) es una especie importante del género Phaseolus para consumo humano en regiones tropicales. Las semillas son una fuente importante de proteínas para las personas de América del Sur, África y México. Además, como leguminosas, el frijol de lima presenta la capacidad de realizar la fijación biológica de nitrógeno (BNF) a través de la simbiosis con bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno. Los estudios sobre la diversidad y la eficiencia de la simbiosis de frijol de lima-rizobio han aumentado en todo el mundo, principalmente en América Latina. Estos estudios han demostrado que Bradyrhizobium y Rhizobium son los principales simbiontes, aunque Sinorhizobium, Mesorhizobium y Allorhizobium se han asociado al frijol de lima. Además, existe una gran variación en la eficacia de la fijación de N por los aislamientos actuales de rizobios y algunos rizobios han presentado una alta capacidad para reparar N. Esta revisión tiene como objetivo explorar los estudios sobre la diversidad y la eficacia de rizobios en simbiosis con frijol lima.

RESUMO Os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) e com as bactérias promotoras de crescimento (BPCPs) beneficiam a sobrevivência e o desenvolvimento de plântulas; tais benefícios são atribuídos ao aumento da absorção de nutrientes, aumento da taxa fotossintética, e aumento da tolerância a estresse abiótico. O objetivo deste estudo foi o de avaliar se a co-inoculação de BPCPs e do FMA, Glomus clarum, melhora o crescimento de Manihot esculenta Crantz micropropagada. As BPCPs utilizadas foram Azospirillum amazonense (BR 11140), Herbaspirillum seropedicae (BR 11175), Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus (BR 11284) e Streptomyces sp. (S 30), isoladas e em mistura com dupla inoculação (Streptomyces sp. + A. amazonense), (Streptomyces sp. + H. seropedicae), (Streptomyces sp. + G. diazotrophicus), (A. amazonense + H. seropedicae), (A. amazonense + G. diazotrophicus), (H. seropedicae + G. diazotrophicus). As estirpes de BPCPs inoculadas na mandioca cv. "BRA Pretinha III" influenciaram a colonização micorrízica e o número de glomerosporos. Nessas condições ocorreram efeitos sinérgicos de Glomus clarum com essas BPCPs. O teor de proteína bruta revelou a contribuição de BPCPs na nutrição nitrogenada de mandioca em que as plantas inoculadas assimilaram N em proporção igual àquelas que receberam nitrogênio mineral. A inoculação combinada de BPCPs na presença de Glomus clarum foi significativa na mandioca e melhorou o crescimento da planta ao longo do tempo, como em todas as variáveis estudadas. A co-inoculação de BPCPs e FMA pode atender a necessidade de N para mandioca, implicando redução no uso de fertilizante nitrogenado.

ABSTRACT Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and growth promoting bacteria in plants (PGPBs) benefit the survival and development of plantlets; such benefits are attributed to the increased absorption of nutrients, increased photosynthetic rate and tolerance to abiotic stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the co-inoculation PGPBs and the AMF, Glomus clarum, improves the growth of micropropagated Manihot esculenta Crantz. The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse. The PGPBs used were Azospirillum amazonense (BR 11140), Herbaspirillum seropedicae (BR 11175), Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus (BR 11284) and Streptomyces sp. (S 30) and mixtures with double inoculation (Streptomyces sp + A. amazonense, Streptomyces sp + H. seropedicae, Streptomyces sp + G. diazotrophicus, A. amazonense + H. seropedicae, A. amazonense + G. diazotrophicus, and H. seropedicae + G. diazotrophicus). Strains of PGPBs inoculated in cassava cv. "BRA Pretinha III" influenced mycorrhizal colonization and the number of glomerospores, and synergistic effects occurred between Glomus clarum and PGPBs. The crude protein content revealed the contribution of PGPBs to nitrogen nutrition in cassava where the inoculated plants assimilated N in equal proportion with those that received mineral nitrogen. The combined inoculation of PGPBs in the presence of Glomus clarum was significant in cassava and fostered better performance in plant growth over time, similar to all the variables studied. Co-inoculation of PGPBs and AMF can meet the N need of cassava, with implications for the reduced use of N fertilizer.

RESUMO: Este estudo avaliou a resposta do feijão-fava (Phaseolus lunatus L.) a aplicação de lodo de curtume compostado na nodulação, absorção de N e crescimento. Durante oito anos, o composto foi aplicado em doses de: 0, 2.5, 5, 10, e 20 Mg ha-1 (base seca). As plantas de feijão-fava mostraram maior nodulação nos tratamentos com o composto. Entretanto, os nódulos encontrados nestes tratamentos apresentaram menor biomassa, tamanho e diversidade do que os observados no tratamento sem composto. A acumulação de N aumentou com a aplicação da maior dose do composto (20 Mg ha-1), enquanto que houve um aumento nos teores de crômio na parte aérea com o aumento das doses do composto. Desta forma, o uso do lodo de curtume compostado, em longo prazo, aumenta a acumulação de crômio, aumentando a nodulação, enquanto diminui a diversidade de rizóbios nos nódulos.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the responses of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) to application of composted tannery sludge on nodulation, N uptake and plant growth. For eight years, the compost was applied at rates of: 0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 Mg ha-1 (dry basis). Plants of lima bean showed higher nodulation in treatments with compost; however, nodules reported in these treatments presented lower biomass, size and diversity than those reported in treatment without compost. Accumulation of N increased with the application of the highest rate (20 Mg ha-1), while there was an increase in chromium content in shoot with the increase in compost rates. Thus, the use of composted tannery sludge, in long-term, increases the accumulation of chromium in plants, increasing nodulation, while decrease rhizobia diversity in nodules.

RESUMO Bactérias promotoras de crescimento em plantas (BPCP) são encontradas em tecidos vegetais e promovem o crescimento vegetal por meio da secreção de hormônios e enzimas, ou auxiliando a absorção de nutrientes. Avaliaram-se quarenta isolados de BPCP para determinar seus efeitos sobre o crescimento de milho e sorgo. Estes isolados foram também comparados com plantas não inoculadas, como controles negativos (-N; sem fertilização nitrogenada) e positivos (+N; com fertilização nitrogenada). A altura, diâmetro de caule, massas secas da parte aérea e raízes, acúmulo de N e conteúdo de clorofila foram avaliados. Em ambos o milho e o sorgo, a altura, diâmetro do caule e a massa seca da parte aérea em plantas inoculadas com BPCP foram similares aos das plantas não inoculadas e fertilizadas com N, e as respostas da massa das raízes foram maiores que das plantas fertilizadas com N. Entretanto, os isolados de BPCP não promoveram acúmulo de N e conteúdo de clorofila semelhantes aos das plantas não inoculadas e fertilizadas com N. IPACC26 e IPACC30, ambos identificados como Bacillus subtilis, apresentaram melhores respostas para o crescimento das plantas e acúmulo de N do que os outros isolados.

ABSTRACT Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are found in plant tissues and promote plant growth by secretion of hormones and enzymes, or by facilitating the nutrient uptake. This study assessed forty PGPB isolates to determine their effects on maize and sorghum growth. These isolates were also compared with uninoculated plants, as negative (-N; without N fertilization) and positive (+N; with N fertilization) controls. Plant height, stem diameter, shoot and root dry mass, leaf N accumulation and chlorophyll content were evaluated. For both the maize and sorghum, the height, stem diameter and shoot dry mass in plants inoculated with PGPB were similar to those of uninoculated plants supplied with N, and the responses for root mass were higher than in plants supplied with N. However, the PGPB isolates did not promote N accumulation and chlorophyll content similar to those of uninoculated plants supplied with N. The IPACC26 and IPACC30 isolates, both identified as Bacillus subtilis, resulted in better responses for plant growth and N accumulation than the other isolates.

ABSTRACT To mitigate the deleterious effects of abiotic stress, the use of plant growth-promoting bacteria along with diazotrophic bacteria has been increasing. The objectives of this study were to investigate the key enzymes related to nitrogen and carbon metabolism in the biological nitrogen fixation process and to elucidate the activities of these enzymes by the synergistic interaction between Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria in the absence and presence of salt stress. Cowpea plants were cultivated under axenic conditions, inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium sp. and Actinomadura sp., Bradyrhizobium sp. and Bacillus sp., Bradyrhizobium sp. and Paenibacillus graminis, and Bradyrhizobium sp. and Streptomycessp.; the plants were also maintained in the absence (control) and presence of salt stress (50 mmolL-1 NaCl). Salinity reduced the amino acids, free ammonia, ureides, proteins and total nitrogen content in nodules and increased the levels of sucrose and soluble sugars. The co-inoculations responded differently to the activity of glutamine synthetase enzymes under salt stress, as well as glutamate synthase, glutamate dehydrogenase aminating, and acid invertase in the control and salt stress. Considering the development conditions of this experiment, co-inoculation with Bradyrhizobium sp. and Bacillus sp. in cowpea provided better symbiotic performance, mitigating the deleterious effects of salt stress.

Abstract Soil salinity is an important abiotic stress worldwide, and salt-induced oxidative stress can have detrimental effects on the biological nitrogen fixation. We hypothesized that co-inoculation of cowpea plants with Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria would minimize the deleterious effects of salt stress via the induction of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidative protection. To test our hypothesis, cowpea seeds were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium or co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria and then submitted to salt stress. Afterward, the cowpea nodules were collected, and the levels of hydrogen peroxide; lipid peroxidation; total, reduced and oxidized forms of ascorbate and glutathione; and superoxide dismutase, catalase and phenol peroxidase activities were evaluated. The sodium and potassium ion concentrations were measured in shoot samples. Cowpea plants did not present significant differences in sodium and potassium levels when grown under non-saline conditions, but sodium content was strongly increased under salt stress conditions. Under non-saline and salt stress conditions, plants co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and Actinomadura or co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and Paenibacillus graminis showed lower hydrogen peroxide content in their nodules, whereas lipid peroxidation was increased by 31% in plants that were subjected to salt stress. Furthermore, cowpea nodules co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria and exposed to salt stress displayed significant alterations in the total, reduced and oxidized forms of ascorbate and glutathione. Inoculation with Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria induced increased superoxide dismutase, catalase and phenol peroxidase activities in the nodules of cowpea plants exposed to salt stress. The catalase activity in plants co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and Streptomyces was 55% greater than in plants inoculated with Bradyrhizobium alone, and this value was remarkably greater than that in the other treatments. These results reinforce the beneficial effects of plant growth-promoting bacteria on the antioxidant system that detoxifies reactive oxygen species. We concluded that the combination of Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria induces positive responses for coping with salt-induced oxidative stress in cowpea nodules, mainly in plants co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and P. graminis or co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and Bacillus.

Abstract We used 16S rRNA sequencing to assess the archaeal communities across a gradient of Cerrado. The archaeal communities differed across the gradient. Crenarcheota was the most abundant phyla, with Nitrosphaerales and NRPJ as the predominant classes. Euryachaeota was also found across the Cerrado gradient, including the classes Metanocellales and Methanomassiliicoccaceae.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da inoculação com Azospirillum brasilense e adubação nitrogenada sobre a produtividade do milho verde. O estudo foi conduzido no município de Teresina, PI, em 2011 e 2012, e os tratamentos foram dispostos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso sob arranjo fatorial de 5x2, sendo cinco doses de nitrogênio (N) (0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 kg N ha-1) com e sem inoculação. No tratamento com inoculação, foi utilizado um produto formulado contendo A. brasilense, estirpes Abv5 e Abv6. Houve aumento significativo no número e na massa das espigas comerciais com a inoculação de A. brasilense em relação ao tratamento sem inoculação. A combinação de inoculação com A. brasilence e nitrogênio aumenta em mais de 30% a produção de espigas de milho verde.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of A. brasilense inoculation and nitrogen fertilization on green corn yield. The study was conducted out in Teresina, PI, in 2011 and 2012, and treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with five N rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha-1) with and without inoculation. In the inoculated treatment it was used a product with A. brasilense, strains Abv5 and Abv6. There was a significant increase in both number and mass of commercial corn cobs with A. brasilense inoculation as compared with treatment without inoculation. The association of inoculation with A. brasilence and nitrogen increase more than 30% the corn cobs production.

Foi determinada a ocorrência de espécies de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) em áreas nativa (AN) e impactada (AI) pela mineração de gesso em Araripina, PE, Brasil, utilizando como culturas-armadilha: sorgo e amendoim. Os esporos de FMA foram caracterizados morfologicamente para identificação ao nível de espécie. DNA foi extraído de esporos para caracterização molecular a partir de sequencias da região ITS. No estudo molecular foram identificados três gêneros e quatro espécies (Funneliformis mosseae, Glomus sp., Glomus hoi, Claroideoglomus claroideum), que mostram capacidade para tolerar as condições de estresse da área minerada. Trabalhos em campo devem ser realizados para compreender melhor a dinâmica e funcionalidade dessas espécies de FMA que poderiam ser selecionadas para uso em programas de manejo, na recuperação de áreas similares.

The occurrence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in native (AN) and gypsum mining impacted (AI) areas in Araripina, Pernambuco State, Brazil, was determined using as trap cultures sorghum and peanut. The spores were morphologically characterized for identification at species level. DNA was extracted from spores and sequences of the ITS region used for molecular characterization. The molecular study confirmed the identification of three genera and four species (Funneliformis mosseae, Glomus sp., Glomus hoi, Claroideoglomus claroideum) that show ability to support stress conditions. Field work should be carried out to better understand the dynamics and functionality of these AMF species which could be selected for management programs in similar degraded areas.

Neste trabalho foi avaliado o possível uso de métodos de preservação líquida para conservação de rizóbio ao longo do tempo, sob condições de temperatura ambiente. Solução salina (água destilada esterilizada + NaCl), glicerol e carboximetilcelulose (CMC) foram avaliados visando à preservação de culturas de Rhizobium tropici e Bradyrhizobium japonicum por 180 dias e em relação a sua capacidade para promover a nodulação do feijão comum (Phaseolus vulgaris [L.]) e da soja (Glycine max [L.]). A população total foi determinada após 0; 1; 7; 15; 21; 30; 60; 90; 120; 150 e 180 dias de conservação e, as bactérias conservadas foram avaliadas quanto as suas características simbióticas após 15, 60 e 120 dias de conservação. Embora tenham ocorrido interações significativas entre os métodos de conservação x espécies, a solução salina e o CMC podem ser usados por períodos curtos de armazenamento, permitindo a produção de inoculante para experimentos de campo e teste de pureza e concentração antes do seu estabelecimento em campo. As técnicas utilizadas têm custo baixo e uso mais prático do que as tradicionais formulações em base turfosa, e se determinada a viabilidade por meio de novas pesquisas, poderia ser uma adição de baixo custo para a padronização de técnicas microbiológicas, particularmente como meio de trabalho para preservação de culturas.

This paper evaluates the possible use of liquid preservation methods for rhizobia long term conservation under ambient temperature conditions. Saline solution (sterile distilled water + NaCl), glycerol and carboxymethycellulose (CMC) were evaluated for preservation of Rhizobium tropici and Bradyrhizobium japonicum cultures up to 180 days and regarding their capacity to promote common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris [L.]) and soybean (Glycine max [L.]) nodulation. The total population was determined after 0; 1; 7; 15; 21; 30; 60; 90; 120; 150 and 180 days of conservation and conserved bacteria were evaluated for symbiotic characteristics after 15, 60 and 120 days of conservation. Although there were significant species x conservation method interactions, both saline solution and CMC may be used for short storage terms, allowing the production of inoculant for field experiments, and its test for purity and concentration before field establishment. The utilized techniques have low cost and easier usage as inoculants, compared to the traditional turf-based products, and if determined feasible by further research it could be a low cost addition to the standard microbiological techniques, particularly as working culture preservation media.

A fixação biológica do nitrogênio pela simbiose leguminosa-rizóbio é uma das mais importantes fontes de N para as plantas e depende fortemente da eficiência simbiótica da estirpe rizobiana. Este trabalho avaliou a capacidade simbiótica de isolados rizobianos de calopogônio (Calopogonium mucunoides) provenientes de um Argissolo sob pastagens de Brachiaria decumbens, bosques de sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia), e áreas de Mata Atlântica da Zona da Mata seca de Pernambuco. Foram obtidos 1.575 isolados distribuídos em 398 grupos. Realizou-se a autenticação para apenas um isolado aleatório de cada grupo, em blocos casualizados com duas repetições. A inoculação foi feita com 1 mL por planta de caldo bacteriano com população estimada de 10(8) células rizobianas mL-1. Aos 45 dias após a inoculação, as plantas foram colhidas, separadas em parte aérea, raízes e nódulos, secas em estufa até massa constante e pesadas. A fase seguinte, teste de capacidade simbiótica, foi montada em blocos casualizados, com duas repetições, em sacos de polietileno contendo 1,5 kg da mistura areia:vermiculita autoclavada (1:1). Foram isolados e selecionados 122 tratamentos, após a autenticação, com base na matéria seca da parte aérea, bem como cinco tratamentos-controle não inoculados, recebendo o equivalente a 0; 50; 100; 150; e 200 kg ha-1 de N, e um tratamento inoculado com a estirpe SEMIA 6152 (=BR1602) de Bradyrhizobium japonicum. O experimento foi conduzido da mesma forma que a fase anterior. A matéria seca da parte aérea das plantas inoculadas com os isolados mais efetivos não diferenciou significativamente do tratamento adubado com 150 kg ha-1 de N. A matéria seca da parte aérea correlacionou-se positivamente com todas as variáveis analisadas. A maior proporção de isolados eficientes foi obtida com os isolados de bosques de sabiá. Houve grande variação nos valores de matéria seca de nódulos, bem como na concentração e no acúmulo de N nas plantas.

Biological nitrogen fixation by rhizobium-legume symbiosis represents one of the most important nitrogen sources for plants and depends strongly on the symbiotic efficiency of the rhizobium strain. This study evaluated the symbiotic capacity of rhizobial isolates from calopo (CALOPOGONIUM MUCUNOIDES) taken from an agrisoil under BRACHIARIA DECUMBENS pasture, sabiá (MIMOSA CAESALPINIIFOLIA) plantations and Atlantic Forest areas of the Dry Forest Zone of Pernambuco. A total of 1,575 isolates were obtained from 398 groups. A single random isolate of each group was authenticated, in randomized blocks with two replications. Each plant was inoculated with 1 mL of a bacterial broth, containing an estimated population of 10(8) rhizobial cells mL-1. Forty-five days after inoculation, the plants were harvested, separated into shoots, roots and nodules, oven-dried to constant mass, and weighed. Next, the symbiotic capability was tested with 1.5 kg of an autoclaved sand:vermiculite (1:1) mixture in polyethylene bags. The treatments consisted of 122 authenticated isolates, selected based on the shoot dry matter, five uninoculated controls (treated with 0, 50, 100, 150, or 200 kg ha-1 N) and a control inoculated with SEMIA 6152 (=BR1602), a strain of BRADYRHIZOBIUM JAPONICUM The test was performed as described above. The shoot dry matter of the plants inoculated with the most effective isolates did not differ from that of plants treated with 150 kg ha-1 N. Shoot dry matter was positively correlated with all other variables. The proportion of effective isolates was highest among isolates from SABIÁ forests. There was great variation in nodule dry weight, as well as in N contents and total N.

RESUMO A Sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth.) possui a característica ecológica de se associar simbioticamente a bactérias fixadoras de Nitrogênio e fungos micorrízicos arbusculares. Tais associações são utilizadas como ferramentas biológicas capazes de minimizar o uso de fertilizantes químicos e beneficiar o desenvolvimento da planta em ambientes com déficit nutricional. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o crescimento da Sabiá em resposta à inoculação com rizóbio e fungos micorrízicos arbusculares, estabelecer curvas de crescimento em altura e diâmetro do colo, determinar os conteúdos de N e P na parte aérea das plantas e avaliar a sobrevivência das plantas em campo. A estirpe de rizóbio utilizada foi a BR3405, os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares utilizados foram Glomus clarum e Gigaspora margarita. A inoculação conjunta de Glomus clarum + Gigaspora margarita + BR3405 e a inoculação com o isoladoGigaspora margarita promoveram os melhores valores para as variáveis estudadas (altura, diâmetro do colo, conteúdo de N e P), sendo este último o tratamento mais indicado para o cultivo da Sabiá nas condições em estudo. As plantas apresentaram 100 % de sobrevivência, independente do tratamento utilizado. Não foi constatada diferença estatística para os conteúdos de N e P na parte aérea da Sabiá, porém, foi observado maior crescimento das plantas com o uso dos simbiontes.

ABSTRACT Sabia (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth.) has ecological characteristics and symbiotic associations with nitrogen fixing bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. These associations are used as biological tool that could be used as an able alternative to minimize chemical fertilizer use and benefit plant development at environments under nutritional deficit. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth of Leguminosae Sabia (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth.) like response to rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation, to establish growth curves to height and stem based diameter, to determine the N and F contents in plants aerial parts and to evaluate plants survival at field. The strain used was BR3405, The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi used was Glomus clarum and Gigaspora margarita. The Glomus clarum + Gigaspora margarita + BR3405 and Gigaspora margarita inoculation provided better values for the studied variables (height, diameter, N and P), and this last one was the best choice to Sabia plantation. The plants showed 100 % survival, regardless the treatment ued. There was not significant statistical difference for N and F content in Sabia aerial part., Nevertheless, it was noticed a faster growth in plants with symbiont.

As pastagens formam a base da pecuária brasileira; essas sofrem degradação em larga escala por deficiência de nitrogênio (N). O consórcio com leguminosas, além de fixar N, pode apresentar outros efeitos na fertilidade do solo como acidificação ou retirada de nutrientes de camadas mais profundas para as mais superficiais. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o estoque de serapilheira e a fertilidade do solo em pastagens degradadas de braquiária (Brachiaria decumbens), após implantar leguminosas arbustivas e arbóreas forrageiras. Para isso, uma amostragem foi realizada em março de 2010 em um experimento no campo, introduzindo pastagem degradada de Brachiaria decumbens, em julho de 2008, com sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia), leucena (Leucaena leucocephala), mororó (Bauhinia cheilantha) e gliricídia (Gliricidia sepium), além de braquiária adubada e não adubada com N. As amostras de solo e serapilheira foram coletadas aos 0-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm de profundidade, em três transectos, alternando pontos cobertos por gramíneas e leguminosas, totalizando sete amostras compostas por parcela para determinar pH, P, K, Ca, Mg e Al no solo, enquanto SB, t e m foram calculados. A serapilheira foi separada visualmente em leguminosas, gramíneas e materiais não identificados, em que foram utilizados para quantificação de matéria seca, matéria orgânica, N, P, C, fibra detergente ácido e lignina. A introdução das leguminosas aumentou os teores de N total na serapilheira e reduziu as relações C:N, com destaque para gliricídia e sabiá; entretanto, essa última apresentou elevados teores de lignina. Houve efeito significativo da cobertura por leguminosas, sem diferenças entre essas, para pH e K, na profundidade de 0-10 cm, e para Al e m, aos 10-20 cm de profundidade.

Pastures are the fodder supply of Brazilian livestock, and are exhaustively degraded by nitrogen (N) deficiency. Intercropping with legumes, aside from nitrogen fixation, may have secondary effects on soil fertility, such as acidification or nutrient movement from deeper to the surface soil layers. This study evaluated the soil litter stock and fertility of degraded Brachiaria decumbens pastures after planting leguminous shrubs and forage trees. For this purpose, we sampled (March 2010) degraded Brachiaria decumbens pasture planted in July 2008 in an intercropping experiment with sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia), leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala), mororó (Bauhinia cheilantha) and gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium), as well as N-fertilized and unfertilized brachiaria. Soil and litter was sampled (layers 0-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm) in three transects, at alternating points covered by grasses and by legumes, totaling seven composite samples per plot to determine soil pH, P, K , Ca, Mg, and Al and calculate sum of bases, effective cation exchange capacity and aluminum saturation. Litter was visually separated in legumes, grasses and unidentified material to quantify dry matter, organic matter, N, P, C, acid-detergent fiber, and lignin. The use of legumes increased the levels of total N in litter and reduced the C: N ratios, especially of gliricidia and sabiá, although the lignin levels in the latter were high. There was a significant effect of legume soil cover, with no differences between them, on pH and K (layer 0-10 cm) and on pH, K and Al (layer 10-20 cm).
