Resumo: A bacia do rio Tocantins-Araguaia é a maior bacia localizada completamente no território brasileiro. O elevado nível de endemismo de sua ictiofauna foi atestado em vários estudos, com o alto rio Tocantins possuindo o maior número absoluto de táxons endêmicos da bacia Amazônica. Aqui, fornecemos uma acurada revisão sobre o conhecimento da ictiofauna da bacia do rio Tocantins-Araguaia entre 2000-2020; uma extensa lista das espécies válidas de peixes ocorrentes na bacia, assim como uma discussão sobre as maiores ameaças para sua ictiofauna. Dados sobre a diversidade da ictiofauna foram refinados por meio de buscas na internet. O mapeamento das Áreas Protegidas e das hidrelétricas foi realizado utilizando os arquivos de área ou coordenadas fornecidas pelas agências governamentais responsáveis. 751 espécies de peixes são atualmente conhecidas para a bacia do rio Tocantins-Araguaia. Um aumento considerável no conhecimento sobre a diversidade de peixes ocorreu nos últimos 20 anos em paralelo com significativas alterações antrópicas na bacia e seu entorno. As represas ao longo da bacia são consideradas a maior ameaça à ictiofauna. Embora a região hidrográfica abrigue diversas unidades de conservação e terras indígenas, estas não têm sido suficientes para garantir a preservação das espécies de peixes. Nossa compilação enfatiza que o alto rio Tocantins precisa ser considerado como área prioritária para a conservação das espécies de peixes. Algumas ações mitigatórias, que podem atingir resultados satisfatórios em relação à conservação da ictiofauna, são também propostas.

Abstract: The Tocantins-Araguaia River basin is the largest basin located entirely in the Brazilian territory. The high degree of endemism of its ichthyofauna has been revealed in several studies, with the upper Tocantins River having the largest absolute number of endemic taxa within the Amazon basin. Here we provide an accurate review of the ichthyofauna of the Tocantins-Araguaia River basin, based on collections made between 2000-2020, including an extensive list of valid fish species occurring in the basin and a discussion of the major threats to its ichthyofauna. Ichthyofauna diversity was further refined based on web searches. Protected Areas and hydropower plants were mapped using shape files or coordinates from the responsible government agencies. 751 species of fishes are currently known from the Tocantins-Araguaia River basin. A considerable increase in fish diversity knowledge occurred in the last 20 years, in parallel with significant anthropic alterations in the basin and its surroundings. Dams constructed along the basin are ranked as the major threats to ichthyofauna. Although the drainage-basin holds several conservation units and indigenous lands, they have not been sufficient to guarantee the preservation of fish species. Our compilation emphasizes that the upper Tocantins River must be considered as a priority area to preserve fish species. Some mitigation actions that may achieve satisfactory results concerning ichthyofauna conservation are proposed.

Uma espécie nova de Harttia, tribo Harttiini, é descrita dos tributários da porção superior da drenagem do rio Paraná. A espécie nova, a menor espécie conhecida do gênero, alcançando até 74,0 mm de comprimento padrão, pode ser diferenciada de suas congêneres pela combinação dos seguintes caracteres: abdômen completamente coberto por placas ósseas, uma única placa preanal, placas da região gular em contato amplo com a placa portadora de canal. Harttia absaberi é a segunda espécie do gênero conhecida da porção superior da drenagem do rio Paraná.

A new species of Harttia, tribe Harttiini, is described from tributaries of upper portions of rio Paraná drainage. The new species, the smallest known species of the genus, attaining up to 74.0 mm of standard length, can be distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: abdomen completely covered by plates, a single preanal plate, plates of the gular area in broad contact with the canal plate. Harttia absaberi is the second species of the genus known from the upper portion of rio Paraná drainage.

Rineloricaria daraha, espécie nova, é descrita do rio Daraá, um afluente do rio Negro, noroeste do Estado do Amazonas, Brasil. A nova espécie pode ser diagnosticada por apresentar sete raios ramificados na nadadeira peitoral, lábios inferiores com papilas digitiformes, uma grande placa pré-anal multi-angular e, pelo menos, quatro placas de diferentes tamanhos circundando a placa pré-anal. A nova espécie é conhecida apenas do rio Daraá e suas cachoeiras.

Rineloricaria daraha, new species, is described from the rio Daraá, tributary of rio Negro, northwestern Amazonas State, Brazil. The new species is diagnosed by having seven branched pectoral-fin rays, finger-like papillae on the lower lip, a large multi-angular preanal plate, and at least four quadrangular plates of variable size surrounding the preanal plate. The new species is known only from rio Daraá and its waterfalls.

Uma nova espécie de Rineloricaria Bleeker, proveniente do rio Vermelho, bacia do Araguaia, Goiás, Brasil, é descrita. Rineloricaria osvaldoi, espécie nova, distingue-se de suas congêneres pelos seguintes caracteres: superfície da região torácica trapezoidal com maior largura entre as nadadeiras peitorais, máximo de 13 dentes pré-maxilares, maior largura do corpo na seção da placa protadora de canal, perfil anterior da cabeça semicircular, em vista dorsal, em machos sexualmente maduros. A despeito de serem conhecidos oito gêneros de Loricariinae para a bacia do rio Araguaia, somente uma espécie de Rineloricaria era formalmente registradas para esta bacia, R. lanceolata. Deste modo, a descoberta de R. osvaldoi enriquece o cenário da diversidade de Loricariinae para esta bacia de drenagem.

A new species of Rineloricaria Bleeker from the rio Vermelho, Araguaia basin, Goiás, Brazil is described. Rineloricaria osvaldoi, new species, can be distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: surface of thoracic area trapezoidal with greatest width between pectoral fins, up to 13 premaxillary teeth, largest body width at the section of the canal plate, anterior profile of the head of mature males semicircular in dorsal view. Although eight genera of Loricariinae are known from the rio Araguaia basin, R. lanceolata was only species of Rineloricaria previously reported from that basin. Therefore, the discovery of the R. osvaldoi increases the scenery of diversity of Loricariinae within this drainage basin.

The Paraíba do Sul is a major running water system in southeastern Brazil (22º24' -22º26'S; 43º43' -44º16' W), draining one of the most important industrial regions in the country. Because of its location, it has suffered a large amount of alteration due to discharges of urban and industrial effluents with direct influence in the ichthyofauna. The aim of this study is to up-to-date information on fish assemblage structure and its variation in the vicinity of a major industrial effluent outfall at Volta Redonda industrial complex. A standardized fishing sampling program, using seines, casting nets, gill nets and net trays, was carried out from October 1997 to September 1999, at six sites in three zones of the river (upstream, nearby and downstream the industrial complex), aiming to compare variation in fish assemblage due to anthropogenic alteration. Fifty-two species in 13 families were identified in the total of 7286 fish specimens. Characidae was the most diverse family contributing with 28,85% to total number of species, followed by Cichlidae (17,31 %). Overall 15,38% of the species were introduced from other watershed systems, four exotic cichlids (genera Oreochromis Günther, 1862 and Tilapia A. Smith, 1840) and three aloctone (Cichla ocellaris Bloch & Schneider, 1801, Hyphessobricon callistus (Boulenger, 1900) e Metynnis maculatus (Kner, 1860)). Lebistes reticulatus (Peters, 1859) was the most abundant fish species contributing to 39,7% of the total number of fish, followed by Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) amounting to 27,4%. Fish abundance was higher in the industrial zone, but only a few very dominant species were captured, while the upstream zone showed the most even community. Species replacement tolerance along the alterations gradient in the three zone seems to be a strategy to use the limited resources in the area.
