ABSTRACT The interest in the use of wastewater has grown, due to the limitation of good quality water, especially in the semi-arid region. The objective was to analyze the chemical alterations of soil irrigated with wastewater and phosphate fertilization, in the production of seedlings of Moringa oleifera Lam. The experiment was installed in a greenhouse, in the forest nursery of the Experimental Station Prof. Ignácio Salcedo from the National Institute of the Semi-Arid Region – INSA, Campina Grande – Paraíba. A randomized block design was adopted, factorial arrangement 5 x 2, with four replications, with five percentages of treated domestic wastewater, diluted in supply water (25%; 50%; 75%; 100% and treated supply water), associated with two nutritional factors (PA – phosphorus fertilization and SA – without fertilization). At 110 days after conducting the treatments, the following soil characteristics were evaluated: hydrogen potential, electrical conductivity, calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, potassium, sum of bases, aluminum, hydrogen, sulfate, cation exchange capacity and organic matter. The use of phosphate fertilizer contributed positively to the phosphorus, carbon, organic matter and cation exchange capacity of the soil. The increasing percentiles of wastewater leveraged the sum of bases and the cation exchange capacity, simultaneously promoted the increase in Na+, Al, H+Al contents and in the electrical conductivity of the soil saturation extract.

RESUMO O interesse na utilização de águas residuárias tem crescido, devido a limitação de água de boa qualidade, em destaque para o semiárido. Este trabalho teve por objetivo analisar as alterações químicas do solo irrigado com águas residuárias e da adubação fosfatada, na produção de muda de Moringa oleifera Lam. O experimento foi instalado em estufa, do viveiro florestal da Estação Experimental Prof. Ignácio Salcedo do Instituto Nacional do Semiárido – INSA, Campina Grande – Paraíba. Adotou-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, arranjo fatorial 5 x 2, com quatro repetições, com cinco percentuais de água residual doméstica tratada, diluída em água de abastecimento (25%; 50%; 75%; 100% e água de abastecimento tratada), associados a dois fatores nutricionais (AF – adubação fosfatada e SA – sem adubação). Aos 110 dias após condução dos tratamentos, avaliaram-se as seguintes características do solo: potencial hidrogeniônico, condutividade elétrica, cálcio, magnésio, sódio, fósforo, potássio, soma de bases, alumínio, hidrogênio, sulfato, capacidade de troca catiônica e matéria orgânica. O uso da adubação fosfatada contribuiu de maneira positiva nos teores de fósforo, carbono, matéria orgânica e capacidade de troca catiônica do solo. Os percentis crescente de água residuária alavancaram a soma de bases e a capacidade de troca catiônica, simultaneamente promoveu o aumento nos teores de Na+, Al, H+Al e na condutividade elétrica do extrato de saturação do solo.

Abstract Projects on river basin integration are keen social-economical drivers in dry regions like the Brazilian semiarid, however, there are concerning ecological impacts implied in those projects. In a long-term analysis, ichthyofauna colonization and spread through the East Axis of the São Francisco River Integration Project (SFIP) was monitored to assess possible impacts on the receiving Paraíba River basin. The fish were collected semiannually (2012 to 2021) from 19 sites in the São Francisco (SF) and Paraíba (PB) basins. A total of 69 fish species were recorded, with distinct fish assemblages between SF (n = 50), PB (n = 35), and the SFIP artificial reservoirs (n = 25). The SFIP reservoirs were colonized by species from the donor basin (SF). In a pioneer finding, Anchoviella vaillanti was recorded for the first time in the receiving basin and it is in the process of establishment. The two SF species that reached PB through the SFIP canals (A. vaillanti and Moenkhausia costae) may be using their year-round reproduction and wide diet to successful spread and colonize the new environment. Since we detected species with potential to reach the receiving basin and became invasives, the implementation of barriers to contain their spread are recommended.

Resumo Projetos de integração de bacias hidrográficas são socialmente importantes em regiões como o semiárido brasileiro, porém há impactos ecológicos preocupantes implícitos nesses grandes projetos de infraestrutura. A colonização e dispersão da ictiofauna pelo Eixo Leste do Projeto de Integração do Rio São Francisco (PISF) foi monitorada para avaliar possíveis impactos na bacia receptora do rio Paraíba do Norte. Os peixes foram coletados semestralmente (2012 a 2021) em 19 locais das bacias do São Francisco (SF) e Paraíba (PB). Foram registradas 69 espécies de peixes, sendo 50 nos pontos do SF, 25 nos reservatórios artificiais ao longo do PISF e 35 nos pontos do PB. As assembleias de peixes das bacias do SF, PB e dos reservatórios do PISF foram significativamente distintas. Os reservatórios do PISF foram colonizados por espécies provenientes da bacia doadora (SF). Anchoviella vaillanti foi registrada pela primeira vez na bacia receptora do PB e está em processo de estabelecimento. As duas espécies do SF que chegaram ao PB pelos canais do PISF (A. vaillanti e Moenkhausia costae) apresentaram dieta e estratégias reprodutivas que permitem o sucesso na disseminação e colonização. Uma vez que foram detectadas espécies com potencial de atingir a bacia receptora, recomenda-se o monitoramento e manejo contínuos.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to correlate depressive symptoms, attitude, and self-care of elderly people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: study developed with 144 elderly people with diabetes; carried out in Family Health Units. A semi-structured instrument was used to obtain data on the sociodemographic profile; the Geriatric Depression Scale (15 items), the Questionário de Atitudes Psicológicas do Diabetes [Psychological Attitudes of Diabetes Questionnaire], and the Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire (DSCA) were also used. Results: it was identified that 24.3% of the participants presented depressive symptoms, and 93.8% presented negative attitudes of coping. A greater adherence to self-care activities related to the practice of medication was observed. In the correlation between the scales, a negative and inversely proportional correspondence was noted between depressive symptomatology and physical activity (p=0.010) and foot care (p=0.006), likewise between attitude and foot care (p=0.009). Conclusions: self-care in elderly people with diabetes mellitus is influenced by depressive symptoms and negative coping attitudes.

RESUMEN Objetivos: correlacionar síntomas depresivos, actitud y autocuidado de personas ancianas con diabetes tipo 2. Métodos: estudio desarrollado con 144 ancianos con diabetes; realizado en Unidades de Salud de la Familia. Utilizados instrumento semiestructurado para obtener los datos referentes al perfil sociodemográfico, Escala de Depresión Geriátrica (15 ítems), Encuesta de Actitudes Psicológicas del Diabetes y de Actividades de Autocuidado con el Diabetes. Resultados: identificado que 24,3% de los participantes presentaron sintomatología depresiva; y 93,8%, actitudes negativas de enfrentamiento. Observado una mayor adhesión a las actividades de autocuidado relacionadas a la práctica medicamentosa. En la correlación entre las escalas, fue percibida una correspondencia negativa e inversamente proporcional entre sintomatología depresiva y actividad física (p=0,010) y cuidado con los pies (p=0,006), igualmente entre actitud y cuidado con los pies (p=0,009). Conclusiones: el autocuidado en personas ancianas con diabetes mellitus sufre influencia de los síntomas depresivos y de la actitud negativa en el enfrentamiento.

Resultados: identificou-se que 24,3% dos participantes apresentaram sintomatologia depressiva; e 93,8%, atitudes negativas de enfrentamento. Observou-se uma maior adesão às atividades de autocuidado relacionadas à prática medicamentosa. Na correlação entre as escalas, foi percebida uma correspondência negativa e inversamente proporcional entre sintomatologia depressiva e atividade física (p=0,010) e cuidado com os pés (p=0,006), do mesmo modo entre atitude e cuidado com os pés (p=0,009). Conclusões: o autocuidado em pessoas idosas com diabetes mellitus sofre influência dos sintomas depressivos e da atitude negativa no enfrentamento.

Um estudo transversal realizado com adolescentes de 10 a 13 anos de Belo Horizonte, Brasil. Foi realizada uma amostragem aleatória estratificada considerando distrito administrativo e ano escolar. Os adolescentes preencheram um formulário com o AUDIT C, perguntas sobre religiosidade e perguntas sobre binge drinking pelos pais e melhor amigo. Um formulário sobre questões socioeconômicas foi respondido pelos responsáveis. Foi realizada análise descritiva, regressão logística univariada e multivariada. Participaram do estudo 650 adolescentes. A frequência de binge drinking foi de 13,7%. No modelo ajustado, a religiosidade não esteve associada ao binge drinking. As covariáveis associadas foram idade de 12-13 anos (OR: 1,94 IC95%: 1,06-3,56; p=0,030), binge drinking pela mãe (OR: 3,12; IC95%: 1,76-5,52; p<0,001) binge drinking pelo melhor amigo (OR: 6,01; IC95%: 3,40-10,62; p<0,001) e família não nuclear (OR: 1,80; IC95%: 1,01-3,23; p=0,045). Os achados revelaram que apesar dos adolescentes afirmarem serem religiosos, para o binge drinking, os principais fatores que influenciaram essa decisão foi o binge drinking pelo melhor amigo, mãe e família não nuclear.

The findings revealed that, for binge drinking, the main factors that influenced this decision were the best friend and maternal binge drinking and family structure, although the adolescents claimed to be religious.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the inter-reliability of the Braden scale and its subscales for different patients assisted in the intensive care unit. We hypothesized that the Braden scale has low reliability in different populations. METHODS: This reliability study involved the Braden scale in intensive care unit of a hospital. A total of 200 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit in four different groups: neurological patients, sepsis, elderly, and adults affected by trauma. The Braden scale is a tool composed of six subscales for patient assessment: sensory perception, humidity, activity, mobility, nutrition, and friction. The total score was also calculated. The Braden scale was applied by two different nurses with an interval of 20–30 min between applications. RESULTS: For all populations, kappa values considered unsuitable were observed for most categories of the Braden scale, ranging from 0.06–0.25. Only for the total Braden scale score was moderate reliability identified in all groups evaluated, with intraclass correlation coefficient values ranging from 0.48–0.75. CONCLUSIONS: Braden scale is not a reliable tool to be used in the intensive care unit, and we do not recommend the use of this scale to assess the risk of developing pressure injury.

Abstract Introduction The evolving COVID-19 pandemic became a hallmark in human history, not only by changing lifestyles, but also by enriching scientific knowledge on viral infection and its consequences. Objective Although the management of cardiorespiratory changes is pivotal to a favorable prognosis during severe clinical findings, dysregulation of other systems caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection may imbalance erythrocyte dynamics, such as a bidirectional positive feedback loop pathophysiology. Method and Results Recent evidence shows that SARS-CoV-2 is capable of affecting the genetics and dynamics of erythrocytes and this coexists with a non-homeostatic function of cardiovascular, respiratory and renal systems during COVID-19. In hypothesis, SARS-CoV-2-induced systematical alterations of erythrocytes dynamics would constitute a setpoint for COVID-19-related multiple organ failure syndrome and death. Conclusion The present review covers the most frequent erythrocyte-related non-homeostatic findings during COVID-19 capable of providing mechanistic clues of SARS-CoV-2-induced infection and inspiring therapeutic-oriented scientific evidence.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a associação entre anemia e aspectos nutricionais em atletas adolescentes de um clube desportivo de grande porte. Métodos: Trata-se de estudo de corte transversal que envolveu 298 atletas com idades entre 10 e 17 anos, submetidos à aferição de dobras cutâneas, peso e altura, além de coleta de sangue capilar em duplicata para a determinação dos valores de hemoglobina. Foi realizado em amostra aleatória composta de atletas oriundos de oito modalidades esportivas. Resultados: Em relação ao estado nutricional, 10,1% dos atletas apresentaram excesso de peso com base no índice de massa corpórea e 70 (23,5%) atletas estavam com porcentagem de gordura corporal classificada como alta ou muito alta. A prevalência de anemia foi de 16,4%, mais prevalente nos atletas do judô (37,1%), basquete (34%) e futsal (20,5%). Níveis baixos de hemoglobina foram associados à menor estatura (p=0,006). Conclusões: Observou-se associação significativa entre anemia e baixa estatura, o que sugere que o desenvolvimento pôndero-estatural do atleta pode ser afetado em condições subótimas de distribuição de oxigênio.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the association between anemia and nutritional aspects in adolescent athletes from a large sport club. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, involving 298 athletes aged between 10 and 17 years, submitted to measurement of skin folds, weight and height, and collection of capillary blood in duplicate to determine hemoglobin values. It was carried out in a random sample composed of athletes from eight sport modalities. Results: Regarding nutritional status, 10.1% of athletes were overweight based on body mass index and 70 (23.5%) athletes had a percentage of body fat classified as high or very high. The prevalence of anemia was 16.4%, being more prevalent in judo (37.1%), basketball (34%) and futsal (20.5%) athletes. Low hemoglobin levels were significantly associated with shorter stature (p=0.006). Conclusions: There was a significant association between anemia and short stature, suggesting that the athlete's height-weight development may be affected in suboptimal conditions of oxygen distribution.

Little is known about the evolution of head circumference (HC) in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). This study aims to evaluate HC growth in children with CZS in the first three years of life and identify associated factors. HC data obtained at birth and in neuropediatric consultations from 74 children with CZS were collected from the Child’s Health Handbook, parents’ reports, and medical records. Predictors of HC z-score were investigated using different mixed-effects models; Akaike’s information criterion was used for model selection. The HC z-score decreased from -2.7 ± 1.6 at birth to -5.5 ± 2.2 at 3 months of age, remaining relatively stable thereafter. In the selected adjusted model, the presence of severe brain parenchymal atrophy and maternal symptoms of infection in the first trimester of pregnancy were associated with a more pronounced reduction in the HC z-score in the first three years of life. The decrease of HC z-score in CZS children over the first three months demonstrated a reduced potential for growth and development of the central nervous system of these children. The prognosis of head growth in the first 3 years of life is worse when maternal infection occurs in the first gestational trimester and in children who have severe brain parenchymal atrophy.

Pouco se sabe sobre a evolução do perímetro cefálico (PC) em crianças com síndrome congênita associada à infecção pelo vírus Zika (SCZ) em acompanhamentos contínuos. Este estudo buscou avaliar o crescimento do PC em crianças com SCZ nos primeiros três anos de suas vidas e identificar os fatores associados a ele. Os dados do PC ao nascimento e obtidos em consultas neuropediátricas de 74 crianças com SCZ foram coletados no Cartão da Criança, nos laudos paternos e em seus prontuários. Os preditores de escore-z para PC foram investigados utilizando-se diferentes modelos de efeitos mistos. O critério de informação de Akaike foi utilizado para selecionar os modelos usados. O escore-z de PC diminuiu de -2,7 ± 1,6 ao nascimento para -5,5 ± 2,2 aos 3 meses de idade, mas permaneceu relativamente estável desde então. No modelo ajustado selecionado, a presença de atrofia parênquimal cerebral grave e sintomas maternos de infecção no primeiro trimestre de sua gravidez estiveram associados a uma redução mais acentuada no escore-z de PC nos primeiros três anos de vida dos participantes. A diminuição do escore-z de PC em crianças com SCZ nos primeiros 3 meses de sua vida monstra o potencial reduzido de crescimento e desenvolvimento do sistema nervoso central dessas crianças. O prognóstico de crescimento do perímetro cefálico nos primeiros 3 anos de vida é pior quando a infecção materna ocorreu no primeiro trimestre gestacional e em crianças que tiveram atrofia parênquimal grave.

El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el crecimiento del PC en niños con SZC en los primeros 3 años de vida e identificar los factores asociados. Se recogieron datos del PC al nacimiento y obtenidos en las consultas de neuropediatría de 74 niños con SZC a partir de la Tarjeta del Niño, los informes de los padres y los registros médicos. Se investigaron los predictores de la puntuación Z del PC mediante diferentes modelos de efectos mixtos; se utilizó el criterio de información de Akaike para la selección del modelo. La puntuación Z del PC disminuyó de -2,7 ± 1,6 al nacer a -5,5 ± 2,2 a los 3 meses de edad, pero a partir de entonces se mantuvo relativamente estable. En el modelo ajustado seleccionado, la presencia de atrofia grave del parénquima cerebral y los síntomas maternos de infección en el primer trimestre del embarazo se asociaron con una reducción más pronunciada de la puntuación Z del PC en los primeros 3 años de vida. La disminución de la puntuación Z del PC en los niños con SZC durante los primeros 3 meses demuestra el menor potencial de crecimiento y desarrollo del sistema nervioso central de estos niños. El pronóstico del crecimiento de la cabeza en los primeros 3 años de vida es peor cuando la infección materna se produjo en el primer trimestre gestacional y en los niños que tenían una atrofia grave del parénquima cerebral.

Os dados do PC ao nascimento e obtidos em consultas neuropediátricas de 74 crianças com SCZ foram coletados no Cartão da Criança, nos laudos paternos e em seus prontuários. Os preditores de escore-z para PC foram investigados utilizando-se diferentes modelos de efeitos mistos. O critério de informação de Akaike foi utilizado para selecionar os modelos usados. O escore-z de PC diminuiu de -2,7 ± 1,6 ao nascimento para -5,5 ± 2,2 aos 3 meses de idade, mas permaneceu relativamente estável desde então. No modelo ajustado selecionado, a presença de atrofia parênquimal cerebral grave e sintomas maternos de infecção no primeiro trimestre de sua gravidez estiveram associados a uma redução mais acentuada no escore-z de PC nos primeiros três anos de vida dos participantes. A diminuição do escore-z de PC em crianças com SCZ nos primeiros 3 meses de sua vida monstra o potencial reduzido de crescimento e desenvolvimento do sistema nervoso central dessas crianças. Se recogieron datos del PC al nacimiento y obtenidos en las consultas de neuropediatría de 74 niños con SZC a partir de la Tarjeta del Niño, los informes de los padres y los registros médicos. Se investigaron los predictores de la puntuación Z del PC mediante diferentes modelos de efectos mixtos; se utilizó el criterio de información de Akaike para la selección del modelo. La puntuación Z del PC disminuyó de -2,7 ± 1,6 al nacer a -5,5 ± 2,2 a los 3 meses de edad, pero a partir de entonces se mantuvo relativamente estable. En el modelo ajustado seleccionado, la presencia de atrofia grave del parénquima cerebral y los síntomas maternos de infección en el primer trimestre del embarazo se asociaron con una reducción más pronunciada de la puntuación Z del PC en los primeros 3 años de vida. El pronóstico del crecimiento de la cabeza en los primeros 3 años de vida es peor cuando la infección materna se produjo en el primer trimestre gestacional y en los niños que tenían una atrofia grave del parénquima cerebral.

RESUMO Objetivo: A silicose é uma pneumoconiose caracterizada por fibrose do parênquima pulmonar causada por inalação de partículas de sílica. Fatores genéticos podem desempenhar um papel na gravidade da silicose. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar a influência de polimorfismos dos genes ACE, FAS, FASLG, NOS2, IL1RN, FAM13A, TGFB1 e TNF na gravidade da silicose. Métodos: Nove polimorfismos foram genotipados por meio de PCR em uma amostra composta por 143 pacientes com silicose no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Resultados: A silicose foi classificada em simples em 57 (40%) dos pacientes e em complicada, em 86 (60%). O genótipo TT do polimorfismo rs1800469 do gene TGFB1 teve efeito protetor contra a silicose complicada (OR = 0,35; IC95%: 0,14-0,92; p = 0,028) em comparação com os outros dois genótipos (CC+CT). O alelo T polimórfico do polimorfismo rs763110 do gene FASLG (OR = 0,56; IC95%: 0,31-0,99; p = 0,047) e um modelo dominante do alelo T (TT+CT: OR = 0,37; IC95%: 0,15-0,96; p = 0,037) também tiveram efeito protetor. Quando se compararam os pacientes que tinham silicose simples com um tempo maior de exposição à sílica (> 44.229 horas) àqueles que tinham silicose complicada com um tempo menor de exposição à sílica, o alelo T do polimorfismo rs763110 do gene FASLG (OR = 0,20; IC95%: 0,08-0,48; p < 0,0001) e modelos dominantes e recessivos (OR = 0,06; IC95%: 0,00-0,49; p = 0,01 e OR = 0,22; IC95%: 0,06-0,77; p = 0,014, respectivamente) tiveram efeito protetor contra a gravidade da silicose. Conclusões: Polimorfismos rs1800469 do gene TGFB1 e polimorfismos rs763110 do gene FASLG parecem estar envolvidos na gravidade da silicose. Como há poucos estudos que tenham estabelecido relações entre polimorfismos genéticos e a gravidade da silicose, esses resultados devem ser replicados em outras populações.

ABSTRACT Objective: Silicosis is a pneumoconiosis characterized by fibrosis of the lung parenchyma caused by inhalation of silica particles. Genetic factors might play a role in the severity silicosis. We sought to evaluate the influence of polymorphisms in the ACE, FAS, FASLG, NOS2, IL1RN, FAM13A, TGFB1, and TNF genes on the severity of silicosis. Methods: Nine polymorphisms were genotyped by PCR in a sample of 143 patients with silicosis in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Results: Fifty-seven patients (40%) were classified as having simple silicosis and 86 (60%) were classified as having complicated silicosis. The TT genotype of rs1800469 in the TGFB1 gene showed a protective effect for complicated silicosis (OR = 0.35; 95% CI, 0.14-0.92; p = 0.028) when compared with the other two genotypes (CC+CT). The polymorphic T allele of rs763110 in the FASLG gene (OR = 0.56; 95% CI, 0.31-0.99; p = 0.047), as well as a dominant model for the T allele (TT+CT: OR = 0.37; 95% CI, 0.15-0.96; p = 0.037), also showed a protective effect. When patients with simple silicosis despite having been exposed to silica for a longer time (> 44,229 hours) were compared with patients with complicated silicosis despite having been exposed to silica for a shorter time, the T allele of rs763110 in the FASLG gene (OR = 0.20; 95% CI, 0.08-0.48; p < 0.0001), as well as dominant and recessive models (OR = 0.06; 95% CI, 0.00-0.49; p = 0.01 and OR = 0.22; 95% CI, 0.06-0.77; p = 0.014, respectively), showed a protective effect against the severity of silicosis. Conclusions: It appears that rs1800469 polymorphisms in the TGFB1 gene and rs763110 polymorphisms in the FASLG gene are involved in the severity of silicosis. Given the lack of studies relating genetic polymorphisms to the severity of silicosis, these results should be replicated in other populations.

BACKGROUND Angiogenesis has been implicated in tissue injury in several noninfectious diseases, but its role in Chagas disease (CD) physiopathology is unclear. OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Trypanosoma cruzi infection on cardiac angiogenesis during the acute phase of experimental CD. METHODS The signalling pathway involved in blood vessel formation and cardiac remodelling was evaluated in Swiss Webster mice infected with the Y strain of T. cruzi. The levels of molecules involved in the regulation of angiogenesis, such as vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), Flk-1, phosphorylated extracellular-signal-regulated protein kinase (pERK), hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), CD31, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and also the blood vessel growth were analysed during T. cruzi infection. Hearts were analysed using conventional histopathology, immunohistochemistry and western blotting. FINDINGS In this study, our data demonstrate that T. cruzi acute infection in mice induces exacerbated angiogenesis in the heart and parallels cardiac remodelling. In comparison with noninfected controls, the cardiac tissue of T. cruzi-infected mice presented higher levels of (i) HIF-1α, VEGF-A, Flk-1 and pERK; (ii) angiogenesis; (iii) α-SMA+ cells in the tissue; and (iv) collagen -1 deposition around blood vessels and infiltrating throughout the myocardium. MAIN CONCLUSIONS We observed cardiac angiogenesis during acute experimental T. cruzi infection parallels cardiac inflammation and remodelling.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the Canadian Diabetes Risk Questionnaire for use in Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: This is a Questionnaire validity study conducted at a private university. The Brazilian version of the Canadian Diabetes Risk Questionnaire was developed by means of the processes of translation, back-translation, committee review, and pretesting. Test-retest reliability was measured using the intraclass correlation coefficient and kappa coefficient. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha. For construct validity, the total score of the Canadian Diabetes Risk Questionnaire was correlated with the Diabetes Knowledge Scale and the Diabetes Mellitus Risk Questionnaire. Ceiling and floor effects were also evaluated in the present study. RESULTS: For construct validity and floor and ceiling effect measurements, a total sample of 100 participants was used. For reliability, a subsample of 34 participants out of the total sample was used. We identified adequate values for reliability (kappa between 0.46–1.00 and ICC 0.96) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.80). There were significant correlations between the Canadian Diabetes Risk Questionnaire and the Diabetes Mellitus Risk Questionnaire (rs=0.370, p<0.001), but not the Diabetes Knowledge Scale (rs= −0.162). No ceiling or floor effects were found. CONCLUSION: We concluded that in accordance with the best international recommendations, the Brazilian version of the Canadian Diabetes Risk Questionnaire has adequate psychometric properties.

Abstract Background: the biological activity of vitamin D depends on the activity of its receptor or VDR. On the other hand, the activity of this receptor is influenced by its state of methylation. The objective of this study was to verify if the BsmI polymorphism of the VDR gene influences its methylation profile in adolescents. Secondly, it was to verify if the status of some metabolic factors (oxidative stress, inflammation, lipid profile, and glycemia) in the serum, and gender-adjusted vitamin D levels are independent factors with an influence on the VDR methylation profile. Methods and results: the study included 198 adolescents of both sexes, aged 15-19 years, who underwent testing for VDR gene methylation polymorphisms, serum vitamin D levels, and metabolic, oxidative stress, and systemic inflammation markers. It was observed that the BB genotype was less methylated than the other groups (26.1 % versus 30.3 %, and 29.3 % for Bb and bb, respectively), although without statistical differences between them. The odds ratio indicated a protection of 13 % (partially methylated) for vitamin D status, while alpha glycols increased the risk ratio (of being partially methylated) by 3 %. MDA was protective at a 28 % chance of risk that adolescents with higher levels of lipid peroxidation would be hypomethylated. Conclusion: we conclude that the methylation profile of the VDR gene is not influenced by the different BsmI polymorphism genotypes, and that serum vitamin D and serum markers of oxidative stress and inflammation can modulate this profile.

Resumen Antecedentes: la actividad biológica de la vitamina D depende de la actividad de su receptor, el VDR. Por otro lado, la actividad de este receptor está influenciada por su estado de metilación. El objetivo de este estudio es verificar si el polimorfismo BsmI del gen VDR influye en el perfil de metilación del mismo en los adolescentes. En segundo lugar, verificar si los factores metabólicos (estrés oxidativo, inflamación, perfil lipídico y glucemia) del suero y la vitamina D ajustada por sexo actúan independientemente de los polimorfismos sobre el perfil de metilación del VDR. Métodos y resultados: el estudio incluyó a 198 adolescentes de ambos sexos, de 15 a 19 años de edad, que se sometieron a análisis de polimorfismos de metilación del gen VDR, niveles de vitamina D, marcadores metabólicos, estrés oxidativo e inflamación sistémica. Se observó que el genotipo BB estaba menos metilado que los otros grupos (26,1 % contra 30,3 % y 29,3 % para Bb y bb respectivamente), aunque sin diferencias estadísticas entre ellos. El odds ratio indicó una protección del 13 % (parcialmente metilado) para el estado de la vitamina D, mientras que los alfa glicoles aumentaron el índice de riesgo (de estar parcialmente metilado) en un 3 %. La MDA fue protectora con un 28 % de probabilidad de riesgo de que los adolescentes con niveles más altos de peroxidación lipídica fueran hipometilados. Conclusión: concluimos que el perfil de metilación del gen VDR no está influenciado por los diferentes genotipos del polimorfismo BsmI y que la vitamina D y los marcadores de estrés oxidativo e inflamación en el suero pueden modular este perfil.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to verify the association among obstructive sleep apnea, functional capacity, and metabolic control. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving individuals of both sexes with clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type 2 who were above 18 years of age. The assessment consisted of a volunteer identification form, a 2-minute step test, and the Stop-Bang questionnaire. In order to assess metabolic control, HbA1c and fasting glucose data were collected from medical records. RESULTS: A total of 100 individuals with diabetes mellitus type 2, of whom 61% were women, were included in this study. According to the Stop-Bang instrument, 26, 57, and 17% of patients had low, intermediate, and high risk of developing OSA, respectively. There was no association between the 2-minute step test and metabolic variables and diabetes mellitus type 2 chronicity with Stop-Bang. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that there is no association among obstructive sleep apnea measured by means of Stop-Bang instrument, functional capacity measured by means of 2-minute step test, and metabolic variables in individuals with diabetes mellitus type 2.
