ABSTRACT Background: The biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon tropical forests is one of the most expressive in the world, with 2500 forest species, although restricted to about 250 tree species used commercially. This species diversity indicates the challenge magnitude for research in taxonomy and timber species identification. Likewise, it implies the complexity of biodiversity conservation and restoration measures, which are directly related to the control of deforestation, cutting and transport of illegal wood. With this objective, the present study describes the macroscopic wood anatomical features in order to identify 20 tree species from Peruvian Amazon Forest, “Selva Central”, including an identification key and tree species botanical validation. Results: The wood species are included in 12 families commonly found in the tropical forests of Peru, highlighting the Fabaceae (25%), Moraceae (15%), Podocarpaceae and Lauraceae (10%) families and are sold as timber for several uses and applications in the internal market and for export. The wood species presented common anatomical features, such as diffuse porosity, visible axial parenchyma mainly distinct, and, eventually, with ray storied, e. g: A. cearensis, M. balsamum and M. peruiferum. Conclusion: The tropical tree species identification is possible by analyzing their wood macroscopic anatomical structure. The results can be also applied in the wood trade traceability by controlling deforestation and illegal wood commerce and in proposing policies for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. They constitute, likewise, a database for the recent wood identification methodologies presented in the specialized literature.

Resumo: A biodiversidade e os ecossistemas são elementos importantes para enfrentar as crises socioeconômicas e ambientais nacionais e globais, uma vez que proporcionam novas oportunidades de desenvolvimento. Incorporar a biodiversidade na vida cotidiana é uma oportunidade de ouro para promover o uso sustentável da biodiversidade e dos serviços ecossistêmicos. A conservação e a restauração da biodiversidade, dos ecossistemas e de seus serviços associados mostram potencial para um novo desenvolvimento social e econômico, como fonte de geração de emprego e renda, redução da pobreza e da desigualdade socioeconômica. A diversidade biológica brasileira também se expressa em sua imensa diversidade cultural, com uma grande variedade de detentores de conhecimento indígenas e tradicionais. Esses povos possuem vasto conhecimento sobre agrobiodiversidade, pesca, manejo do fogo, medicina natural, entre outros de valor comercial, cultural e espiritual. As principais conclusões deste Sumário para Tomadores de Decisão é que as mudanças no uso da terra e as mudanças climáticas tenham sido - e continuarão sendo ao longo deste século - os principais vetores da perda de biodiversidade e serviços ecossistêmicos no país. Intervenções políticas em diferentes níveis (do local ao nacional, do público ao privado) e a aplicação das leis existentes (mecanismos regulatórios e incentivos) são necessárias para promover a mitigação dos impactos negativos sobre a biodiversidade e a perda de serviços ecossistêmicos. O Brasil já possui uma ampla variedade de instrumentos de política e opções de governança socioambiental, bem como compromissos globais (ODS, Metas de Aichi, Acordo de Paris) relacionados à possibilidade de um futuro sustentável. Entretanto, o controle ineficiente da gestão ou a falta de incentivo para cumprir as regras traz riscos para a consolidação do caminho para esse futuro. O país tem instituições fortes e capazes, mas problemas de infraestrutura, processos lentos, medidas ineficazes e conflitos judiciais, sociais e ecológicos impedem a realização de um desempenho eficiente. Há uma falta de comunicação entre a ciência e a sociedade que precisa ser melhorada por meio do estabelecimento de um fluxo efetivo que torne a comunicação inclusiva e representativa, alcançando os tomadores de decisão públicos e privados. Esforços permanentes para integrar essas duas esferas de conhecimento na sociedade são desejáveis para criar confiança entre os formuladores de políticas e os pesquisadores.

Abstract: Biodiversity and ecosystems are important elements for addressing national and global socioeconomic and environmental crises, since they provide new development opportunities, for example, as source of job and income creation, and reduction in poverty and socioeconomic inequity. Brazilian biological diversity is also expressed in its immense cultural diversity, with a great variety of knowledge holders. These peoples possess vast knowledge on agrobiodiversity, fishing, fire management, natural medicine, among others of commercial, cultural and spiritual value. The main conclusions of this Summary for Police Makers is that land use changes and climate changes have been - and will continue to be throughout this century - the main drivers that result in the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the country. Political interventions at different levels (from local to national, from public to private) and the enforcement of existing laws (regulatory mechanisms and incentives) are required to cope with the mitigation of the negative impacts of biodiversity and ecosystem services loss. Brazil has already a wide variety of policy instruments and socioenvironmental governance options, as well as global commitments (ODS, Aich Targets, Paris Agreement) related to the objective of a sustainable future. However, inefficient management control or lack of incentive to comply with the rules pose risks to consolidating the path to this future. The country has strong and capable institutions, but infrastructural problems, slow processes, inefficient measurements and judicial, social and ecological conflicts obstruct a proficient performance. There is a lack of communication between science and society which needs to be improved by establishing an effective flow that makes communication inclusive and representative, reaching public and private decision makers. Permanent efforts to integrate Science and policy knowledges are desirable to build confidence between policy makers and researchers.

RESUMO: O controle de baratas realizado através da aplicação de inseticidas químicos exerce alta pressão seletiva sobre as populações e introduz substâncias sintéticas no ambiente, motivando a procura por outros métodos de controle, como os fungos entomopatogênicos. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram investigar a patogenicidade do isolado JAB 42 de Aspergillus westerdijkiae a fêmeas e ootecas de Periplaneta americana e demonstrar o mecanismo de ação sobre ootecas. Suspensões contendo 106 a 108 conídios/mL do isolado foram usadas para infectar fêmeas e ootecas. A ação do fungo foi analisada pela mortalidade e outras variáveis, e por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. O isolado JAB 42 de A. westerdijkiae é patogênico a ootecas de P. americana, tendo baixa capacidade de matar fêmeas. Foi observada a adesão, germinação, penetração e extrusão do fungo sobre ootecas da barata.

ABSTRACT: Cockroach control is performed by the application of chemical insecticides which exert high selective pressure on populations and introduces synthetic substances in the environment, motivating the search for other methods of control such as entomopathogenic fungi. The objectives of this study were to investigate the pathogenicity of the JAB 42 Aspergillus westerdijkiae to females and oothecae of Periplaneta americana and to demonstrate its mechanism of action on oothecae. Suspensions containing 106 to 108 conidia/ml were used to infect females and oothecae. Mortality and other variables such as scanning electron microscopy were used to demonstrate the mechanism of action of the fungus. The isolated JAB 42 A. westerdijkiae is pathogenic to oothecae of P. americana, with low capacity to kill females. Adhesion, germination, penetration and extrusion of the fungus on the cockroach oothecae were observed.

Stereotyped behaviors in captive primates are often caused by unsuitable conditions. Environmental enrichment has been used to reduce these behaviors, and also to increase the frequency of behaviors appropriate to the species. In this pilot study we evaluated whether behavioral enrichment influences food intake by the black tufted-ear marmoset, Callithrix penicillata (É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1812), by calculating energy maintenance requirements. We evaluated 16 individually housed, healthy adult black tufted-ear marmosets, randomly divided into two treatment groups, one with behavioral enrichment and one without. The enrichment techniques included structural aspects, such as placing fixed and mobile objects in the cage and supplying dry foods in an enriched form, in order to stimulate cognition. Based on the metabolic weight of the animals, we calculated the energy requirements for their maintenance. The animals that received behavioral enrichment consumed more food than those that did not. We also observed that the animals that did not receive enrichment consumed 9.85% less food than had been calculated for energy maintenance requirements, while the animals that received enrichment consumed 24.97% more food than had been calculated. Results indicate that the use of behavioral enrichment items raised the energy requirements of the black tufted-ear marmoset and, therefore, the consumption of dry food, suggesting that environmental enrichment plays a role in stimulating food consumption. This conclusion should alert scientists, technicians and primatologists to the importance of controlling body weight of marmosets when introducing environmental enrichment to avoid overfeeding and obesity. To verify this conclusion, a study is needed with a longer time frame and more parameters, such as behavior observation and body weight.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar as características das vítimas de queda da própria altura, principalmente a respeito da frequência de lesões graves, seu diagnóstico e tratamento. MÉTODOS: Estudo retrospectivo dos protocolos de trauma (coletados prospectivamente) de 10/06/2008 a 10/03/2009, incluindo as vítimas de trauma fechado com idade igual ou superior a 13 anos admitidas na sala de emergência. Consideraremos como "graves" as lesões com escore de AIS (Abbreviated Injury Scale) maior ou igual a três. As variáveis foram comparadas entre o grupo de vítimas de quedas da própria altura (Grupo I) e as demais vítimas de trauma fechado (Grupo II). Empregamos os testes T de Student, Qui quadrado e Fisher para a comparação entre os grupos, considerando o valor de p<0,05 como significante. RESULTADOS: Foram analisados 1993 casos de trauma fechado, sendo que 305 (15%) foram vítimas de quedas da própria altura (Grupo I). A média etária nas vítimas de quedas da própria altura foi 52,2 ± 20,9 anos, sendo 64,8% do sexo masculino. Noventa e oito (32,1%) tinham idade acima de 60 anos. No grupo I, as lesões em segmento cefálico foram as mais encontradas (62,2%), seguidas das lesões em extremidades (22,3%), torácicas (1,3%) e abdominais (0,7%). As lesões graves (AIS>3) foram mais frequentemente observadas em segmento cefálico (8,9%), seguidas pelas lesões em extremidades (4,9%). A craniotomia foi necessária em 2,3% das vítimas de quedas de própria altura. Observamos que, em comparação às vítimas de outros mecanismos de trauma fechado, as vítimas de quedas da própria altura apresentavam, significantemente (p<0,05), maior média etária, maior média de pressão arterial sistólica à admissão e maior média de AIS em segmento cefálico bem como menor média de ISS, de AIS em tórax, de AIS em abdome e AIS em extremidades. CONCLUSÃO: A valorização do mecanismo de trauma nas vítimas de quedas da própria altura é de extrema importância, visto a possibilidade de haver lesões graves e clinicamente ocultas, principalmente em segmento cefálico.

OBJECTIVE: Assess characteristics of trauma patients who sustained falls from their own height, more specifically focusing on presence of severe injuries, diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Retrospective study including all adult blunt trauma patients admitted in the emergency room in a period of 9 months. Lesions with AIS (Abbreviated Injury Scale)>3 were considered "severe". Variables were compared between victims of fall from their own height (group I) and other blunt trauma mechanisms (group II). Student's t, chi square and Fisher exact tests were used for statistical analysis, considering p<0.05 as significant. RESULTS: Of the 1993 trauma patients included, 305 (15%) were victims of falls from their own height. In group I, mean age was 52.2 ± 20.8 years and 64.8% were male. Injuries in the head segment were the most frequently observed (62.2%), followed by injuries in the extremities (22.3%), thorax (1.3%) and abdomen (0.7%). Severe injuries (AIS>3) were more frequent in the head (8.9%), followed by extremities (4,9%). In group I, craniotomies were needed in 2.3%. By comparing groups, we observed that victims of falls from their own height had significantly higher mean age, higher mean systolic blood pressure, and higher head AIS mean, as well as lower ISS mean, thorax AIS mean, abdomen AIS mean and extremities AIS mean. CONCLUSION: Importance of the trauma mechanism in victims of falls from own height should be emphasized due to a considerable possibility of occult severe injuries, mainly in the cephalic segment.

O abscesso hipofisário representa uma patologia rara, que, contudo, deve ser considerada na avaliação das massas selares, uma vez que o seu prognóstico depende da drenagem cirúrgica e do uso de antibióticos específicos. A principal manifestação clínica é cefaléia crônica e nem sempre está associada à identificação de um foco infeccioso, o que diminui a probabilidade da sua inclusão nas hipóteses diagnósticas. Apresenta-se o caso de um paciente com abscesso de hipófise e história pregressa de adenoma operado, cefaléia de início recente e hipopituitarismo adquirido, cujo diagnóstico inicial foi de apoplexia pituitária.

A pituitary abscess is a rare pathology, but it must be considered when evaluating sellar masses, since its prognosis depends on surgical drainage and on the use of specific antibiotics. The main clinical manifestation is chronic headache, and it is not always associated with the identification of a site of infection, which diminishes the probability of including it in diagnostic hypotheses. The case is presented of a patient with a pituitary abscess and a previous history of adenoma that had been operated on, recent onset headache and acquired hypopituitarism whose initial diagnosis was pituitary apoplexy.

A utilização de Estabilizadores de Sistemas de Potência (ESP), para amortecer oscilações eletromecânicas de pequena magnitude e baixa freqüência, é cada vez mais importante na operação dos modernos sistemas elétricos. Estabilizadores convencionais, com estrutura e parâmetros fixos, têm sido utilizados com essa finalidade há algumas décadas, porém existem regiões de operação do sistema nas quais esses estabilizadores lineares não são tão eficientes, especialmente quando comparados com estabilizadores projetados através de modernas técnicas de controle. Um ESP Neural, treinado a partir de um conjunto de controladores lineares locais, é utilizado para investigar em quais regiões de operação do sistema elétrico o desempenho do estabilizador a parâmetros fixos é deteriorada. O melhor desempenho do ESP Neural nessas regiões de operação, quando comparado com o ESP convencional, é demonstrado através de simulações digitais não-lineares de um sistema do tipo máquina síncrona conectada a um barramento infinito e de um sistema com quatro geradores.

Power System Stabilizers (PSS) have been applied as the most common solution to damp small magnitude and low frequency oscillations in modern electric power systems. Conventional Stabilizers, with fixed structure and parameters, have been used with this objective for several decades, but there are some system operation conditions where the performance of these linear stabilizers may deteriorate, especially when compared with that of stabilizers designed using modern control techniques. A Neural PSS, trained with a set of local linear controllers, is applied to establish the regions where a Conventional PSS shows low performance. Using non-linear digital simulations of a synchronous machine connected to an infinite-bus system and a multi-machine power system the Neural PSS is assessed showing superiority in those regions.

Foi desenvolvido o teste dot-ELISA para detecção de anticorpos em líquido cefalorraquiano (LCR) no diagnóstico imunológico da neurocisticercose humana, utilizando antígenos de membrana e escólex de Cysticercus cellulosae (M+E-Cc) e, alternativamente, membrana (M) e líquido vesicular (LV) de Cysticercus longicollis (Cl) covalentemente ligados a um novo suporte constituído de tecido de poliéster-resina de N-metilol-acrilamida (dot-TR). O teste foi realizado à temperatura ambiente, com tempos de incubação reduzidos e sem necessidade de cuidados na manipulação do suporte. A sensibilidade obtida foi de 95,1% para o antígeno Cc e 97,6% para o Cl. A especificidade foi de 90,6% quando o antígeno Cc foi usado, e 96,9% e 100% para M-Cl e LV-Cl, respectivamente. Não foi observada diferença significativa entre os antígenos homólogo e heterólogo. O baixo custo e a fácil execução do teste dot-TR empregando extratos antigênicos de Cysticercus longicollis indicam que pode ser empregado como alternativa no imunodiagnóstico da neurocisticercose humana.

A dot-ELISA was developed for the detection of antibodies in CSF in the immunologic diagnosis of human neurocysticercosis, using antigen extracts of the membrane and scolex of Cysticercus cellulosae (M+S-Cc) and, alternately, membrane (M) and vesicular fluid (VF) of Cysticercus longicollis (Cl) covalently bound to a new solid phase consisting of polyester fabric treated with N-methylol-acrylamide resin (dot-RT). The test was performed at room temperature, with reduced incubation times and with no need for special care in the manipulation of the support. The sensitivity rates obtained were 95.1% for antigen Cc and 97.6% for antigen Cl. Specificity was 90.6% when Cc was used, and 96.9% and 100% when M-Cl and VF-Cl were used, respectively. No significant differences in titer were observed between tests carried out with homologous and heterologous antigens. The low cost and easy execution of the dot-RT test using antigen extracts of Cysticercus longicollis indicate the test for use in the immunodiagnosis of human neurocysticercosis.

Mais de 500.000 casos novos de malária foram notificados no Brasil, em 1992. P.falciparum and P.vivax são as espécies responsáveis por 99,3% dos casos. O diagnóstico precoce é indispensável para início do tratamento adequado. Neste trabalho, apresentamos os resultados do método tradicional para detecção de plasmódios, gota espessa, e os resultados de métodos alternativos estudados: imunofluorescência indireta com anticorpo policlonal anti-P.falciparum e QBC-método, em grupos populacionais bem definidos. A análise dos resultados foi feita em relação à presença ou ausênsia de sintomas clínicos de malária. Também, diferentes classes de imunoglobulinas anti-P.falciparum foram quantificadas para auxiliar na análise global dos resultados, principalmente nos resultados discrepantes. Nós concluímos que os métodos alternativos são mais sensíveis do que a gota espessa e que a associação das informações epidemiológicas, clínicas e laboratoriais é necessária para definir a presença de malária.

In Brazil, more than 500,000 new cases of malaria were notified in 1992. Plasmodium falciparum and P.vivax are the responsible species for 99.3% of the cases. For adequate treatment, precoce diagnosis is necessary. In this work, we present the results of the traditional Plasmodia detection method, thick blood film (TBF), and the results of alternative methods: Immunofluorescence assay (IFA) with polyclonal antibody and Quantitative Buffy Coat method (QBC)® in a well defined population groups. The analysis were done in relation to the presence or absence of malaria clinical symptoms. Also different classes of immunoglobulins anti-P.falciparum were quantified for the global analysis of the results, mainly in the discrepant results. We concluded that alternative methods are more sensitive than TBF and that the association of epidemiological, clinical and laboratory findings is necessary to define the presence of malaria.

No diagnóstico sorológico da doença de Chagas podem ser encontradas acentuadas divergências mesmo entre laboratórios de grande experiência. Para a padronização de um teste imunoenzimático destinado primariamente à seleção de doadores de sangue foram cuidadosamente escolhidos painéis de soros que se buscaram como representativos das populações de chagásicos e de não chagásicos. Produzido para máxima sensibilidade e estabilidade, o novo reagente (bioELISA - cruzi<A NAME="tx01"></A><A HREF="#nt">*</A>) foi testado em 1648 soros, com diagnóstico clínico de doença de Chagas em 219 e de outras afecções em 104. O teste foi comparado com testes já bem padronizados, de imunofluorescência (IF) e de hemaglutinação (HA), em 1325 soros. O limiar de reatividade (cut off), estabelecido como ideal, foi indicado nos testes pela absorbância de um soro de reatividade mínima. A sensibilidade do teste imunoenzimático foi de 0,9954 e a especificidade, como conegatividade, de 0,9969. Não foram vistos resultados falso-positivos em casos de sífilis, toxoplasmose, mononucleose e de soros com altos títulos de anti-estreptolisina 0, mas foram encontrados em 5 de 15 casos de leishmaniose tegumentar, 10 de 24 casos de calazar, 1 de 15 casos de artrite reumatóide e 1 de 12 casos de lupus eritematoso sistêmico. Os altos índices de sensibilidade em chagásicos e de especificidade na população geral, traduzem a elevada confiabilidade do teste para triagem de doadores de sangue e para a confirmação de suspeita clínica de doença de Chagas.

In the serological diagnosis of Chagas disease large divergences may be found even between laboratories with experience, as a consequence of different criteria for the standardization of the tests. To standardize a immunoenzimatic test developed primarily for screening blood donors, serum panels were carefully chosen so as to best represent chagasic and non-chagasic populations. Produced for the highest sensibility and stability, the new reagent (bioELISA cruzi, Biolab Diagnóstica S/A, Brasil), was tested in serum from 1648 patients 219 with Chagas disease and 104 with other diseases, plus a comparison with well standardized immunofluorescence and hemagglutination tests in 1325 sera. In the immunoenzimatic assays, the cut off was indicated by the absorbance value of a chagasic serum showing a minimal reactivity. ELISA sensibility was 0,9954 and specificity 0,9969, as conegativity. False positive results were absent with sera from sifilis, toxoplasmosis, mononucleosis and high titered sera for antistreptolysin 0 antibodies. However they were seen in 5 to 15 cases of tegu-mentar leishmaniosis, 1 of 12 Kala-azar 1 of 15 reumatoid arthritis and 1 of 12 sistemic lupus erythematosus. The high sensibility in chagasics and high specificity in the general population indicate the confiability of the imunoenzimatic assay for screening blood donors and even to confirm a clinical diagnosis of Chagas' disease.
