RESUMO Nesse artigo, nos arriscamos a ler a atualidade a partir de imagens que foram publicadas nas mídias sociais durante a crise da pandemia. Por meio de questionamentos das linhas abissais (SOUSA SANTOS, 2007) imbuídas e naturalizadas pelos projetos da Modernidade e do Humanismo, o artigo discute de que maneiras a natureza invadiu, em meio à pandemia, o “lado de cá” da modernidade. A seção seguinte explora o vírus não democrático, problematizando as linhas abissais das diferenças sociais de classe para em seguida complexificar as diferenças gritantes entre a supremacia branca e o genocídio negro, demonstrando que não superamos essa crise histórica da humanidade. A seção cinco investiga as linhas abissais entre o acesso à educação e a perpetuação de um projeto de educação que firma a negação de sua existência. Nas considerações finais, explicamos as razões que nos levam a conceber essas imagens como micropolíticas processuais que têm o potencial de construir “novos modos de subjetividade” (GUATTARI; ROLNIK, 1996, p. 30) e advogamos por uma pedagogia de letramento visual, suas micropolíticas e por uma virada epistêmica nas noções de “crise”.

ABSTRACT In this article, we take the risk of reading the contemporary world based on images that have been published on social media during the pandemic crisis. By questioning the abyssal lines (SOUSA SANTOS, 2007) imbued and naturalized by the projects of Modernity and Humanism, the article discusses the ways in which nature invaded, in the middle of the pandemic, “this side” of modernity. The following section explores the undemocratic virus by problematizing the abyssal lines of social class differences. Then, in order to further complexify the stark differences between white supremacy and black genocide, the next section demonstrates that we have not overcome this historical crisis of humanity. Section five investigates the abyssal lines between access to education and the perpetuation of a project for education that secures the denial of its existence. In the conclusion, we explain the reasons that make us conceive of these images as procedural micropolitics that have the potential to construct “new modes of subjectivity” (GUATTARI; ROLNIK, 1996, p. 30) and suggest a pedagogy of visual literacy and its micropolitics and an epistemic turn in the notions of “crisis”.

RESUMO Neste artigo problematizamos as mortes física e simbólicas, de Matheusa, mulher/homem trans não binária, anunciadas em uma notícia do jornal O Estado de São Paulo, em 2018. O aparato teórico é multidisciplinar e, portanto, enseja o diálogo entre a sociologia, a análise crítica do discurso (ACD) e a linguística aplicada (LA). A metodologia é qualitativa e os métodos de investigação advêm dos procedimentos interpretativos dos estudos sociológicos interseccionais e das ferramentas da ACD. O artigo está dividido em cinco partes. Após a introdução, a segunda parte investiga a interseccionalidade nos estudos de gênero e de raça. Na terceira, problematizam-se os gêneros e as (homos)sexualidades. Raça, racismo são os temas da quarta seção. Finalmente, discurso, mídia e ideologia mostram como as demais mortes de Matheusa são explicitadas discursivamente.

ABSTRACT This article discusses the physical and symbolic deaths of Matheusa, a trans non-binary person, announced in a news article of O Estado de São Paulo in 2018. The theoretical background used is multidisciplinary, thus enabling the dialogue between sociology, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and AL. This a qualitative study, and the investigation methods come from the interpretive procedures of intersectional sociological studies and the instruments of CDA. The article is thus divided into five parts. After the introduction, the second part investigates intersectionality in gender/race studies. The third section investigates gender and homosexuality. Race and racism are the themes of the fourth section. Finally, discourse, media and ideology showcase how the other the deaths of Matheusa are presented discursively.

Resumo Baseando-se nas filosofias pós-estruturalistas foucaultiana e derridiana, nas abordagens sociológicas da linguagem de Sousa Santos e Menezes de Souza, na conceituação produtiva de cultura de Stuart Hall e nos estudos visuais de Mirzoeff, Stam e Shohat, este artigo busca relacionar cultura visual, tradução cultural e educação linguística. De natureza qualitativa e interpretativista, esta reflexão é dividida em cinco seções principais: na introdução, abordagens filosóficas e sociológicas em relação à linguagem visual e cultura são apresentadas. A seção um problematiza a cultura visual, por meio da genealogia de corpos invisíveis. A próxima seção explora a evolução do modelo de tradução gramatical para a tradução cultural na cultura visual. Em seguida, o artigo revisita e desconstrói modelos de letramento dominantes por meio da tradução cultural. Finalmente, esta perspectiva genealógica em relação ao visual mostra que as formações históricas tradicionais retornaram aos cenários políticos e educacionais em nosso país e infelizmente têm promovido uma política de manipulação e alienação.

Abstract Based upon Foucauldian and Derridean post-structuralist philosophy of language, Sousa Santos and Menezes de Souza’s sociological approaches to language, Hall’s productive conceptualization of culture and on Mirzoeff, Stam and Shohat’s visual studies, this paper seeks to engage with discussions on visual culture, cultural translation and language education. Of qualitative/interpretative nature, this reflection is divided into five main sections: in the introduction, it presents philosophical and sociological approaches to (visual) language and culture. Section one problematizes visual culture by means of the genealogy of invisible bodies. Next section evolves from the grammar-translation model to cultural translation in visual culture. Then, it revisits and deconstructs dominant literacy models through cultural translation. Finally, this genealogical perspective towards the visual shows how the traditional historical formations have taken over back again the political and educational scenarios in our country, and thus sadly promoted a politics of manipulation and alienation.

RESUMO Esta entrevista com o Prof. Dr. Brian Morgan da Universidade de York apresenta as perspectivas dos professores Morgan e Ferraz em relação à educação linguística no Canadá e no Brasil. A conversa focaliza temas essenciais para a educação linguística em ambos os contextos: políticas neoconservadoras, neoliberalismo, filosofia da linguagem (Derrida, Bakhtin Foucault, Deleuze), estudos culturais, formação de professores e práticas de ensino. Brian Morgan nos convida a repensar: 1. A agenda neoliberal nas ações e políticas educacionais; 2. As relações entre teorias (filosofias da linguagem, estudos culturais) e práticas (por exemplo, como tais teorias impactam ou não as práticas pedagógicas dos professores da escola pública); 3. O desenho de práticas pedagógicas (por exemplo, o projeto Get Involved, MONTE MÓR; MORGAN, 2014) que proveem momentos críticos para se trabalhar com e contra as agendas neoliberais.

ABSTRACT This interview with Prof. Dr. Brian Morgan from York University presents some of Dr. Morgan and Dr. Ferraz's perspectives in relation to language education in Canada and Brazil. The conversation plunges into essential topics to be problematized by language educators from both countries: neoconservative politics, neoliberalism, plurilingualism, philosophy of language (Derrida, Bakhtin, Foucault, Deleuze), cultural studies, teacher education, teaching practices. Brian Morgan invites us to go through a process of further thinking in terms of: 1. The Neoliberal agenda within educational policies and actions, 2. The relationship between theories (philosophies of language, cultural studies) and practices (how such theories impact - or not - public teachers' pedagogical practices), 3. The design of pedagogical projects (e.g., the Get Involved Project, MONTE MOR; MORGAN, 2014) that provide critical spaces for working within and against neoliberal agendas.

RESUMO Este artigo problematiza o lugar dos letramentos críticos (LCs) na educação linguística contemporânea. Para tanto, indaga: Em tempos educacionais neoconservadores, onde colocamos a crítica no currículo? O que fica para os professores em relação ao seu comprometimento em educar cidadãos críticos? Os LCs são suficientes? Para responder a essas questões, partimos de cenas do mundo contemporâneo, desvelando as angústias marcadas pela complexa política do “nós” versus “eles”. Em seguida, revisitamos os entendimentos de LCs circulantes no campo para, então, nos lançarmos à leitura de nós mesmos em relação às nossas próprias teorizações e práticas. Nas (in)conclusões, esboçamos algumas orientações que realocam os LCs para além da visão dicotômica entre o micro e o macro, como estratégia educativa no lidar com as frustrações desses tempos.

ABSTRACT This article problematizes the place of critical literacies (CLs) in contemporary language education. In doing so, we ask: Where do we place critique within the curriculum in neoconservative times? What is left to teachers in their commitment to educate critical citizens? Do critical literacies suffice? To respond to these questions, we bring a set of contemporary snapshots, unveiling all the anguish brought up by the complex politics of “us” versus “them”. Some understandings of CLs within the field are then reviewed, preparing the terrain for the reading of ourselves in relation to our theories and practices. To (in)conclude, we outline a few orientations which seek to relocate CLs beyond the dichotomic view of the micro versus macro as a formative strategy in dealing with our frustrations in such dark times.
