The aims of this study were 1) to characterize the intensity of the vibration stimulation in women diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM) compared to a control group of healthy women (HW) matched by age and anthropometric parameters, and 2) to investigate the effect of a single session of whole body vibration (WBV) on inflammatory responses. Levels of adipokines, soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFr1, sTNFr2), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Oxygen consumption (VO2) was estimated by a portable gas analysis system, heart rate (HR) was measured using a HR monitor, and perceived exertion (RPE) was evaluated using the Borg scale of perceived exertion. Acutely mild WBV increased VO2 and HR similarly in both groups. There was an interaction (disease vs vibration) in RPE (P=0.0078), showing a higher RPE in FM compared to HW at rest, which further increased in FM after acute WBV, whereas it remained unchanged in HW. In addition, there was an interaction (disease vs vibration) in plasma levels of adiponectin (P=0.0001), sTNFR1 (P=0.000001), sTNFR2 (P=0.0052), leptin (P=0.0007), resistin (P=0.0166), and BDNF (P=0.0179). In conclusion, a single acute session of mild and short WBV can improve the inflammatory status in patients with FM, reaching values close to those of matched HW at their basal status. The neuroendocrine mechanism seems to be an exercise-induced modulation towards greater adaptation to stress response in these patients.

A resposta da mandioca à aplicação de herbicidas varia desde a total seletividade até o completo comprometimento da produção devido à intoxicação provocada. Desse modo, objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a seletividade de herbicidas aplicados em pós-emergência na mandioca. Para isso, foi conduzido experimento em casa de vegetação, em blocos casualizados com 23 tratamentos (22 herbicidas + testemunha), em quatro repetições. Os herbicidas foram aplicados 60 dias após a brotação da mandioca, quando as plantas apresentavam cerca de 15 folhas completamente expandidas. Avaliou-se semanalmente a toxicidade das plantas e, aos 35 dias após a aplicação, elas foram coletadas para determinação da matéria seca. Os sintomas mais visíveis de intoxicação da mandioca ocorreram 21 dias depois da aplicação, para a maioria dos produtos testados. Ao final do período de avaliação, a mandioca apresentava sinais de recuperação dos danos visuais provocados pelos herbicidas tóxicos à cultura. Ametryn, ametryn + trifloxysulfuron-sodium, atrazine, diuron + hexazinone e sulfentrazone provocaram as maiores reduções de matéria seca e causaram os maiores danos visíveis; de modo contrário, bentazon, fluazifop-p-butil, mesotrione e tembotrione foram os menos tóxicos à cultura. Constataram-se diferentes níveis de seletividade dos herbicidas à cultura, sendo bentazon, fluazifop-p-butil, mesotrione e tembotrione os herbicidas considerados seletivos para uso em programas de manejo de plantas daninhas.

The cassava response to herbicide application varies from complete selectivity to full production loss due to the poisoning caused. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the selectivity of herbicides applied at post-emergence in cassava. An experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, under greenhouse conditions, including 23 treatments (22 herbicides + control) and four replications. The herbicides were applied 60 days after cassava shooting, when the plants displayed 15 completely-expanded leaves. Intoxication of cassava plants was evaluated weekly and 35 days after the plants were harvested for dry matter determination. The best visible symptoms of cassava intoxication occurred 21 days after planting for most tested products. At the end of the evaluation period, the cassava plants presented visual signals of recovery from the damage caused by the herbicides. Ametryn, ametryn + trifloxysulfuron-sodium, atrazine, diuron + hexazinone andsulfentrazone caused the greatest reductions of dry matter and the worst visible damage. Contrarily, bentazon,fluazifop-p-butil, mesotrione, and tembotrione were the least toxic to the culture. Cassava presents different levels of selectivity to the herbicides, and bentazon,fluazifop-p-butyl, mesotrione, and tembotrione present a potential active principle for use in weed control management programs.

Criptococose é considerada a infecção fúngica sistêmica oportunista mais comum em pacientes com AIDS. Nestes pacientes tem predominado como agente etiológico Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans, e muito raramente relata-se C. neoformans var. gattiii, mesmo nas regiões onde se verifica a sua prevalência. Foram estudados 50 pacientes com lesões de criptococose meningoencefálica associada com AIDS. Os isolados foram identificados através de características microscópicas e macroscópicas exibidas em meios de ágar Sabouraud, ágar niger e Christensen. As variedades de C. neoformans foram determinadas pela reação de coloração obtida em meio de L-canavanina glicina-azul de bromotimol (CGB). Em todos os pacientes examinados foram isolados C. neoformans, sendo identificados C. neoformans var. neoformans em 47 isolados e C. neoformans var. gattii em 3. Os resultados encontrados mostram que a criptococose em pacientes com AIDS pode também ser causada por C. neoformans var. gatti, apesar de haver predominância de C. neoformans var neoformans nesta população.

Cryptococcosis is considered the most frequent fungal systemic opportunist infection in patients with AIDS. C. neoformans var. neoformans infects the patients with AIDS more often than C. neoformans var. gattii which has been rarely isolated from patients with AIDS. Even in endemic regions of C. neoformans var. gattii, the variety of neoformans is still the most common agent diagnosed in cryptococcosis of patients with AIDS. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from fifty patients with neurocryptococcosis associated with AIDS were studied. The fungi were isolated in agar Sabouraud medium, and were identified by microscopic and macroscopic examination by agar Sabouraud, agar niger and Christensen's urea medium. The variety was determined based on a color characteristic reaction on glycine-L-canavanina-bromothymol blue agar. From all of the fifty patients' cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) we were able to recover C. neoformans. The isolates were identified as C. neoformans var. neoformans in 47 patients and as C. neoformans var. gattii. in the 3 remaining patients. These findings suggest that both varieties, gattii and neoformans, are agents of neurocryptococcosis in patients with AIDS.

Os objetivos deste artigo foram derivar a variância genética da depressão por endogamia (<img SRC="Image505.gif" WIDTH="48" HEIGHT="33">) e predizer a amplitude da depressão por endogamia (RID) dentro de populações de polinização cruzada. A variância da depressão por endogamia é função das variâncias genéticas relacionadas aos efeitos de dominância (<img SRC="Image493.gif" WIDTH="31" HEIGHT="33">, D2 e <img SRC="Image520.gif" WIDTH="21" HEIGHT="25">) e dos coeficientes de endogamia das duas gerações em que é medida a depressão por endogamia (Ft e Fg). Os resultados mostraram que quanto maior o nível de dominância de um caráter maior é a variância da depressão por endogamia, e que as magnitudes de <img SRC="Image505.gif" WIDTH="48" HEIGHT="33">devem ser menores em populações melhoradas (<img SRC="Image500.gif" WIDTH="16" HEIGHT="25"> > 0,6) e não melhoradas (<img SRC="Image500.gif" WIDTH="16" HEIGHT="25"> < 0,4) que em compostos (<img SRC="Image487.gif" WIDTH="16" HEIGHT="25"> <FONT FACE="Symbol">»</font> 0,5). Dados de uma população de milho utilizada como exemplo mostraram que a amplitude da depressão por endogamia na geração S<FONT FACE="Symbol">¥</font> de autofecundação é de 48,7% a 85,3% para produção de grãos e de 13,9% a 24,5% para altura da planta. Um delineamento apropriado para estimar a variância da depressão por endogamia, a sua amplitude e a amplitude de linhagens endogâmicas é apresentado.

The objectives of this paper were to derive the genetic variance of inbreeding depression (<img SRC="Image482.gif" WIDTH="48" HEIGHT="33"> ) and to predict the range of inbreeding depression (RID) in cross-pollinated populations. The variance of inbreeding depression is a function of the genetic variances related to dominance effects (<img SRC="Image483.gif" WIDTH="31" HEIGHT="33">, D2, and <img SRC="Image484.gif" WIDTH="21" HEIGHT="25">), and of the inbreeding coefficients of the two generations in which inbreeding depression is measured (Ft and Fg). The results showed that the higher the level of dominance of a trait, the higher the variance of inbreeding depression. The magnitudes of <img SRC="Image485.gif" WIDTH="48" HEIGHT="33">were expected to be lower in improved (mean gene frequencies = <img SRC="Image486.gif" WIDTH="16" HEIGHT="25">> 0.6) and in unimproved (<img SRC="Image487.gif" WIDTH="16" HEIGHT="25"> < 0.4) populations, than in composite populations (<img SRC="Image487.gif" WIDTH="16" HEIGHT="25"> <FONT FACE="Symbol">»</font> 0.5). Data from a maize population used to illustrate the study showed that the range of inbreeding depression in the S<FONT FACE="Symbol">¥</font> generation of selfing was from 48.7% to 85.3% for grain yield, and from 13.9% to 24.5% for plant height. A mating design outlined to estimate the genetic variance of inbreeding depression, the range of inbreeding depression, and of the range of inbred lines is presented.
