ABSTRACT The auditory systems and sound dynamics in snakes are frequent objects of debate. The known frequency of sounds produced by snakes ranges from 0.2 to 9.5 kHz. Here we report the first record of a vocalization by the South American snake Dipsas catesbyi. The call was recorded oportunistically in June 2021 upon manipulation, and had a duration of 0.06 seconds, reaching 3036 Hz in its peak frequency with a modulated note, emitted through exhalation of air through the larynx. We hypothesize that structured vocal emissions such as this are a reaction to a predation attempt and may be a feature shared by other species of Dipsadidae and other snakes.

RESUMO Os sistemas auditivos e a dinâmica do som em cobras são objetos frequentes de debate. A frequência conhecida dos sons produzidos pelas cobras varia de 0,2 a 9,5 kHz. Aqui relatamos o primeiro registro de vocalização da cobra sul-americana Dipsas catesbyi. O canto foi gravado oportunisticamente em junho de 2021 mediante manuseio, e teve duração de 0,06 segundos, atingindo 3036 Hz em sua frequência de pico com nota modulada, emitida por meio da exalação de ar pela laringe. Nossa hipótese é que emissões vocais estruturadas como esta são uma reação a uma tentativa de predação e podem ser uma característica compartilhada por outras espécies de Dipsadidae e outras serpentes.

Resumo O objetivo foi avaliar a influência da multimorbidade e seus padrões nas atividades básicas de vida diária da pessoa idosa residente na comunidade. Trata-se de estudo de coorte com dados provenientes do Estudo FIBRA, linha de base (2008-2009) e seguimento (2016-2017). As atividades básicas de vida diária (ABVD) foram avaliadas pelo questionário de Katz e as doenças crônicas foram classificadas como (1) multimorbidade e padrões de multimorbidade: (2) cardiopulmonar; (3) vascular-metabólico; e (4) mental-musculoesquelético. Para a análise de dados, utilizou-se o teste qui-quadrado e a regressão de Poisson. Foram analisados 861 indivíduos sem limitação para ABVD na linha de base. As pessoas idosas com multimorbidade (RR = 1,58; IC95%: 1,19-2,10) e classificados nos padrões cardiopulmonar (RR = 2,43; IC95%: 1,77-3,33), vascular-metabólico (RR = 1,50; IC95%: 1,19-1,89) e mental-musculoesquelético (RR = 1,30; IC95%: 1,03-1,65) tiveram maior risco de apresentar declínio funcional nas ABVD no seguimento em comparação aos que não tinham os mesmos padrões de doenças. A multimorbidade e seus padrões aumentaram o risco de incapacidade na pessoa idosa ao longo de nove anos.

Abstract The scope of this article was to evaluate the influence of multimorbidity and associated effects on the activities in the day-to-day lives of community-dwelling elderly individuals. It involved a cohort study with data from the FIBRA Study, the baseline (2008-2009) and follow-up (2016-2017). The basic activities in daily living (ADL) were evaluated using Katz’s index, and the chronic diseases were classified as: (1) multimorbidity and multimorbidity patterns; (2) cardiopulmonary; (3) vascular-metabolic; and (4) mental-musculoskeletal. The chi-square test and Poisson regression data were used for analysis. A total of 861 older adults with no functional dependency at baseline were analyzed. Elderly individuals with multimorbidity (RR = 1.58; 95%CI: 1.19-2.10) and classified according to cardiopulmonary (RR = 2.43; 95%CI: 1.77-3.33), vascular-metabolic (RR = 1.50; 95%CI: 1.19-1.89) and mental-musculoskeletal (RR = 1.30; 95%CI: 1.03-1.65) had a higher risk of presenting functional decline in ADL in the follow-up compared to those who didn’t have the same disease patterns. Multimorbidity and its patterns increased the risk of functional disability in older adults over the nine-year period.

ABSTRACT Background Pancreatic cancer mortality is greater in countries with a high Human Development Index (HDI). This study analyzed pancreatic cancer mortality rates trends, and their correlation with HDI in Brazil over 40 years. Methods: Data on pancreatic cancer mortality in Brazil between 1979 and 2019 were obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM). Age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and Annual Average Percent Change (AAPC) were calculated. Pearson’s correlation test was applied to compare mortality rates and HDI for three periods: 1986-1995 was correlated with HDI of 1991, 1996-2005 with HDI of 2000, and 2006-2015 with HDI of 2010; and to the correlation of AAPC versus the percentage change in HDI from 1991 to 2010. Results: A total of 209,425 deaths from pancreatic cancer were reported in Brazil, with an annual increase of 1.5% in men and 1.9% in women. There was an upward trend for mortality in most Brazilian states, with the highest trends observed in the North and Northeast states. A positive correlation between pancreatic mortality and HDI was observed over the three decades (r>0.80, P<0.05) and also between AAPC and HDI improvement by sex (r=0.75 for men and r=0.78 for women, P<0.05). Conclusion There was an upward trend in pancreatic cancer mortality in Brazil for both sexes, but rates among women were higher. Mortality trends were higher in states with a higher percentage improvement in HDI, such as the North and Northeast states.

RESUMO Contexto A mortalidade por câncer de pâncreas é maior em países com alto Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH). Este estudo analisou as taxas e tendências de mortalidade por câncer de pâncreas e correlacionou-as com o IDH no Brasil no período de 40 anos. Métodos: Os dados sobre mortalidade por câncer de pâncreas no Brasil, entre 1979 e 2019, foram extraídos do Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade (SIM). As taxas de mortalidade padronizadas por idade e variação percentual média anual (AAPC) foram calculadas. O teste de correlação de Pearson foi aplicado para comparar as taxas de mortalidade e IDH em três períodos: 1986-1995 foi correlacionado com o IDH de 1991, 1996-2005 com IDH 2000 e 2006-2015 com IDH 2010; e a correlação da AAPC versus o percentual de variação do IDH de 1991 a 2010. Resultados: Foram notificados 209.425 óbitos por câncer de pâncreas no Brasil no período de 1979 a 2019, com aumento de 1,5% ao ano em homens e de 1,9% em mulheres. Houve tendência de aumento da mortalidade na maioria dos estados brasileiros, com maiores tendências nos estados das regiões Norte e Nordeste. Foi observada uma correlação positiva na mortalidade por câncer de pâncreas e o IDH ao longo de três décadas (r>0,80, P<0,05); também, entre o AAPC e o incremento do IHD entre 1991 e 2010 (r=0,75 para homens e r=0,78 para mulheres, P<0,05). Conclusão: Houve tendência crescente da mortalidade por câncer de pâncreas no Brasil, em ambos os sexos, porém maior entre as mulheres. As tendências de mortalidade foram maiores nos estados com maior percentual de incremento do IDH, como estados das regiões Norte e Nordeste.

Resumo Objetivo analisar a função sexual e sua associação com a sexualidade e com a qualidade de vida de mulheres idosas. Método trata-se de um estudo transversal, do tipo web survey, desenvolvido com 166 mulheres idosas. Foram utilizados quatro instrumentos autoaplicáveis para a obtenção dos dados biosociodemográficos, da função sexual, sexualidade e qualidade de vida. A análise foi realizada com o teste de Mann-Whitney, correlação de Spearman e regressão linear, considerando um intervalo de confiança de 95%. Resultados a maior influência da função sexual foi observada na dimensão ato sexual da sexualidade (β=0,524; [IC95%=0,451-0,597]; p<0,001; R2=54,8%) e entre a faceta intimidade da qualidade de vida (β=0,501; [IC95%=0,380-0,622]; p<0,001; R2=29,0%). De modo geral, o modelo de regressão demonstrou que a função sexual permaneceu associada à sexualidade (β=0,888; [IC95%=0,749-1,028]; p<0,001; R2=49,1%) e à qualidade de vida das participantes (β=0,352; [IC95%=0,264-0,439]; p<0,001; R2=27,7%). Conclusão e implicações para a prática a função sexual está associada à sexualidade e à qualidade de vida das mulheres idosas, assumindo comportamento diretamente proporcional que, por sua vez, pode se tornar uma estratégia para agregar qualidade aos anos adicionais de vida dessa população.

In general, the regression model showed that sexual function remained associated with sexuality (β=0.888; [CI95%=0.749-1.028]; p<0.001; R2=49.1%) and the quality of life of the participants (β=0.352; [CI95%=0.264-0.439]; p<0.001; R2=27.7%). Conclusion and implications for the practice sexual function is associated with the sexuality and quality of life of older women, assuming a directly proportional behavior which, in turn, can become a strategy to add quality to the additional years of life of this population.

Ground improvement techniques applied to very soft clays: state of knowledge and recent advances

Abstract Soft ground improvement techniques have evolved substantially in Brazil in recent years. However, their application in soft and very soft clays requires a good understanding of the fundamentals of ground improvement techniques suited to the problem as well as the actual field behavior when implemented on a real scale. This paper describes some of the most widely used ground improvement techniques in the context of very soft clays in Brazil. The techniques described in the paper use prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) such as vacuum preloading; or combine PVD and rigid inclusion, such as CPR grouting; or are purely column-like elements such as piled embankments (including those executed with the deep mixing technique, DSM); or combine column-like elements with the drainage function, such as stone columns and geosynthetic encased columns; or use cementitious binders such as shallow soil mixing. The paper reference condition is a soft clay foundation in which no strengthening is implemented, such as, an embankment with basal reinforcement or soft clay with vertical prefabricated drains, or the use of vacuum preloading to speed up the consolidation rate. The applications of the ground improvement techniques are illustrated by case histories, numerical analyses, or physical models. Different types of measurements are used to evaluate the performance of each technique, including settlements, horizontal displacements, excess pore pressures, embankment applied stresses, stress concentration factors, and clay strength following the ground treatment. The settlement improvement factor β, the ratio between the settlements for untreated and treated conditions, is shown to be a suitable parameter to assess the degree of improvement imposed in the soft foundation by ranking the various methods in increased order of strengthening effect.

Resumo Objetivo analisar a associação entre as vivências em sexualidade com as variáveis biossociodemográficas e a qualidade de vida de pessoas idosas. Métodos estudo transversal, desenvolvido com 1.922 pessoas idosas brasileiras, cujos dados foram coletados por meio de web survey. Utilizaram-se três instrumentos para a obtenção dos dados biossociodemográficos, da sexualidade e da qualidade de vida. A análise foi realizada com os testes de Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, correlação de Spearman e regressão linear multivariada, com método de entrada “inserir”, adotando Intervalo de Confiança de 95%. Resultados a avaliação geral da sexualidade esteve associada fortemente com estado civil (p<0,001); religião (p=0,001); não ter filhos (p<0,001); orientação sexual (p=0,008) e recebimento de orientações sobre sexualidade pelos profissionais de saúde (p=0,002). A sexualidade correlacionou-se de forma positiva e com diferentes magnitudes com todas as facetas de qualidade de vida (p<0,001). A análise de regressão demonstrou que todas as dimensões da sexualidade permaneceram associadas, positivamente, com qualidade de vida: ato sexual [β=0,154; IC95%=0,083-0,225; p<0,001]; relações afetivas [β=0,335; IC95%=0,263-0,407; p<0,001] e adversidades física e social [β=1,388; IC95%=1,206-1,571; p<0,001]. Conclusão e implicações para a prática: a sexualidade associou-se, significativamente, com algumas variáveis biossociodemográficas e esteve correlacionada, positivamente, com a qualidade de vida das pessoas idosas investigadas.

Abstract Objective to analyze the association between experiences of sexuality with bio-socio-demographic variables and quality of life of elderly people. Methods cross-sectional study, developed with 1,922 Brazilian elderly people, whose data were collected through a web survey. Three instruments were used to obtain bio-socio-demographic data, sexuality and quality of life. The analysis was carried out with the Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman correlation and multivariate linear regression tests, with the “insert” input method, adopting a 95% confidence interval. Results the overall assessment of sexuality was strongly associated with marital status (p<0.001); religion (p=0.001); not having children (p<0.001); sexual orientation (p=0.008) and receiving guidance on sexuality from health professionals (p=0.002). Sexuality correlated positively and with different magnitudes with all facets of quality of life (p<0.001). Regression analysis demonstrated that all dimensions of sexuality remained positively associated with quality of life: sexual act [β=0.154; 95%CI=0.083-0.225; p<0.001]; affective relationships [β=0.335; 95%CI=0.263-0.407; p<0.001] and physical and social adversity [β=1.388; 95%CI=1.206-1.571; p<0.001]. Conclusion and implications for practice sexuality was significantly associated with some bio-socio-demographic variables and positively correlated with the quality of life of the elderly people investigated.

Resumen Objetivo analizar la asociación entre experiencias en sexualidad con las variables biosociodemográficas y la calidad de vida de los adultos mayores. Métodos estudio transversal desarrollado con 1.922 ancianos brasileños, cuyos datos fueron recolectados a través de una encuesta web. Se usaron tres instrumentos para obtener datos biosociodemográficos, de sexualidad y de la calidad de vida. El análisis se realizó mediante las pruebas de Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, correlación de Spearman y regresión lineal multivariada, con método de entrada “ingresar”, adoptando un Intervalo de Confianza del 95%. Resultados la evaluación general de la sexualidad se asoció fuertemente con el estado civil (p <0,001); religión (p = 0,001); no tener hijos (p <0,001); orientación sexual (p = 0,008) y recibir orientación sobre sexualidad por parte de profesionales de la salud (p = 0,002). La sexualidad se correlacionó positivamente y con diferentes magnitudes con todas las facetas de la calidad de vida (p <0,001). El análisis de regresión mostró que todas las dimensiones de la sexualidad permanecieron asociadas positivamente con la calidad de vida: relaciones sexuales [β = 0,154; IC95% = 0,083-0,225; p <0,001]; relaciones afectivas [β = 0,335; IC95% = 0,263-0,407; p <0,001] y adversidades físicas y sociales [β = 1,388; IC95% = 1,206-1,571; p <0,001]. Conclusión e implicaciones para la práctica la sexualidad se asoció significativamente con algunas variables biosociodemográficas y se correlacionó positivamente con la calidad de vida de los ancianos investigados.

ABSTRACT. The study aimed to evaluate performance and growth curves of broilers fed different nutritional relations. A total of 1,440 Cobb-500 male day-old chicks were assigned to eight treatments in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with six replicates of 30 birds each. The main factors were nutritional density (control and high), lysine source (HCl and sulfate), and calcium pidolate (presence and absence). Analyses were made for body weight gain (BWG), and feed conversion rate (FCR) at 21, and 42 days of age. The growth curves were adjusted by weighing a bird per plot every three days. Data for BWG were tested by ANOVA to evaluate the effects of treatments and their interactions at 5% significance, and the Gompertz model was adjusted by NLS. Birds fed a high nutritional density had higher BWG and lower FCR. Calcium pidolate and different sources of lysine did not influence the FCR of broilers, however a triple interaction was evidenced for BWG at 1 to 42 days of age. The day with maximum gain adjusted by Gompertz of all treatments was at the 32nd day of age and the maximum weight (A) was around 5.85 kg.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the effects of sexuality on depressive symptoms and quality of life in older adults. Methods: a cross-sectional and analytical study, developed with 596 older adults, who completed four instruments for data collection. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Structural Equation Modeling, with a 95% Confidence Interval. Results: among the sexuality dimensions, only physical and social adversities exerted statistically significant effects on depressive symptoms (SC=-0.095; p=0.003), but with low magnitude. Moreover, all sexuality dimensions had statistically significant effects on quality of life, being of low magnitude for sexual act (SC=0.171; p=0.010) and for physical and social adversities (SC=0.228; p<0.001), and moderate magnitude for affective relationships (SC=0.474; p<0.001). Conclusions: effects of different magnitudes were observed between sexuality dimensions on participants’ depressive symptoms and quality of life.

RESUMEN Objetivos: analizar los efectos de la sexualidad sobre los síntomas depresivos y la calidad de vida en ancianos. Métodos: estudio transversal y analítico, desarrollado con 596 ancianos, que cumplimentaron cuatro instrumentos para la recolección de datos. Los datos se analizaron mediante la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis y el modelado de ecuaciones estructurales, con un Intervalo de Confianza del 95%. Resultados: entre las dimensiones de la sexualidad, solo las adversidades físicas y sociales ejercieron efectos estadísticamente significativos sobre los síntomas depresivos (CE=-0,095; p=0,003), pero de baja magnitud. Además, todas las dimensiones de la sexualidad tuvieron efectos estadísticamente significativos sobre la calidad de vida, siendo de baja magnitud para el acto sexual (CE=0,171; p=0,010) y para las adversidades físicas y sociales (CE=0,228; p<0,001), y magnitud moderada para las relaciones afectivas (CE=0,474; p<0,001). Conclusiones: se observaron efectos de diferente magnitud entre las dimensiones de la sexualidad sobre los síntomas depresivos y la calidad de vida de los participantes.

Métodos: estudo transversal e analítico, desenvolvido com 596 pessoas idosas, que preencheram quatro instrumentos para a coleta dos dados. Os dados foram analisados com o Teste de Kruskal-Wallis e a Modelagem de Equações Estruturais, com Intervalo de Confiança de 95%. Resultados: dentre as dimensões da sexualidade, somente as adversidades física e social exerceram efeitos estatisticamente significantes na sintomatologia depressiva (CP=-0.095; p=0,003), porém com fraca magnitude. Além disso, todas as dimensões da sexualidade exerceram efeitos estatisticamente significantes na qualidade de vida, sendo de fraca magnitude para o ato sexual (CP=0.171; p=0,010) e para as adversidades física e social (CP=0.228; p<0,001), e moderada magnitude para as relações afetivas (CP=0.474; p<0,001). Conclusões: observaram-se efeitos de diferentes magnitudes entre as dimensões da sexualidade sob a sintomatologia depressiva e qualidade de vida dos participantes.

Abstract Floristic surveys are the main source of information about species composition of different vegetation types and a fundamental input of information for biogeographical studies. Within the Caatinga Domain, there are many vegetation types, of which the most conspicuous is the deciduous caatinga s.s. vegetation. However, along the watercourses of this region, one can find a type of riparian forest called Carnaubais, characterized by a larger presence of evergreen species with access to underground water and a conspicuous occurrence of the endemic “carnauba” palm (Copernicia prunifera). The present study aimed at making a floristic survey on a Carnaubal riverine habitat and a nearby caatinga s.s. site in Ceará, and perform a biogeographical comparison with other sites within the Caatinga Domain. In our study site, we identified 186 species, distributed in 135 genera and 52 families. Of the 186 species recorded, we found 123 species uniquely in the caatinga s.s. phytophysiognomy, 40 uniquely in Carnaubal and 23 in both phytophysiognomies. The most representative families were Fabaceae (31 spp.), Poaceae (15 spp.), and Euphorbiaceae (13 spp.). The UPGMA and NMDS analyses supported the idea that the Carnaubal is a habitat with distinct flora within the Caatinga Domain.

Resumo Os levantamentos florísticos são a principal fonte de informação sobre a composição das espécies de diferentes fitofisionomias e um fator fundamental para estudos biogeográficos. Dentro do Domínio da Caatinga, existem muitos tipos de vegetação, dos quais o mais evidente é a vegetação decídua de caatinga s.s. No entanto, ao longo dos cursos d'água dessa região, pode-se encontrar um tipo de vegetação ripária denominada Carnaubais, caracterizada pela maior presença de espécies perenes com acesso a águas subterrâneas e pela ocorrência evidente da endêmica carnaúba (Copernicia prunifera). O presente estudo teve como objetivo fazer um levantamento florístico em um habitat ribeirinho de Carnaubal e uma caatinga s.s. no Estado do Ceará, e realizar uma comparação biogeográfica com outros estudos realizados dentro do Domínio Caatinga. Em nosso local de estudo, identificamos 186 espécies, distribuídas em 135 gêneros e 52 famílias. Das 186 espécies registradas, 123 foram encontradas somente na fitofisionomia de Caatinga s.s., 40 somente em Carnaubal e 23 em ambas as fitofisionomias. As famílias mais representativas foram Fabaceae (31 spp.), Poaceae (15 spp.) e Euphorbiaceae (13 spp.). As análises do UPGMA e do NMDS corroboraram a ideia de que o Carnaubal é um habitat com flora distinta dentro do Domínio da Caatinga.

Spent Foundry Sand is one of the largest industrial solid wastes generated by foundries in the production of iron and steel components. Currently, millions of tons of molten sands are discarded worldwide. Therefore, this work aims to reuse the Spent Foundry Sand for the production of glass-ceramic materials, since this reuse minimizes the environmental impacts related to its discarding. The Spent Foundry Sand, composed of >60% SiO2, was mixed with limestone and melted at 1500 °C to produce the glass (melting and rapid cooling method). The materials were characterized by X-Ray Fluorescence, X-Ray Diffraction and thermal analysis. The X-Ray Diffraction results of the glass tablets treated at 875, 941 and 1050 °C show that the formed phases are Wollastonite-1A, β-Wollastonite and Akermanite. In summary, it is possible to produce glass-ceramic from Spent Foundry Sand with Wollastonite phase.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic variability and performance of the agronomic traits of wheat cultivars in the southern region of Minas Gerais for the purpose of choosing parents for a rainfed wheat breeding program. We evaluated 78 wheat cultivars in two locations in Minas Gerais regarding different agronomic traits. The statistical analyses were carried out using Henderson’s mixed-model approach. The genetic values of the cultivars were predicted, and the heritabilities and accuracies were estimated for selection of cultivars. The cultivar × location interaction was decomposed into its simple and complex fractions. The genetic and environmental correlations between the traits were estimated, and selection was made for multiple traits using the sum of the standardized variables (Z-index). The genetic variance was significant for all the traits, and the cultivar × location interaction was significant. By the Z-index, 15 wheat cultivars more adapted were identified.

ABSTRACT This is a case report involving a 56-year-old male patient with a history of pars plana vitrectomy due to a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the right eye that resulted in the implantation of a drainage device after the patient developed secondary glaucoma. Two years after the device’s implantation, the patient was referred to our care as his visual acuity had decreased to 20/200 (1.00 LogMAR). At the fundus evaluation, a choroidal amelanotic elevation was observed at the upper temporal equator, and a potential diagnosis was made of amelanotic choroidal melanoma. The ultrasound exam visualized the patient’s implanted superotemporal justabulbar drainage device, which revealed a transscleral communication from the plate fibrocapsular’s draining space to the suprachoroidal space (fistula). The ultrasound also revealed a focal pocket of choroidal detachment in the patient’s superotemporal region, simulating an amelanotic choroidal melanoma. A new pars plana vitrectomy was performed to remove the internal limiting membrane without repercussions at the fistula site. The patient’s recovery progressed well, and he regained a visual acuity of 20/70 (0.55 LogMAR). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of this condition.

RESUMO Relato de caso de paciente 56 anos, sexo masculino, com histórico de vitrectomia via pars plana por descolamento de retina em olho direito e posterior implante de dispositivo de drenagem por glaucoma secundário. Dois anos após o procedimento foi encaminhado ao serviço por baixa de acuidade visual (AV) de 20/200 (1.00 LogMAR). À fundoscopia, observou-se uma elevação amelanótica temporal no equador com hipótese diagnóstica de melanoma de coroide amelanótico. O exame de ultrassom mostrou implante de dispositivo de drenagem justabulbar temporal superior com comunicação transescleral para espaço subcoroidal (fístula), sugerindo bolsão focal de descolamento de coroide em equador temporal superior simulando melanoma de coroide amelanótico. O paciente foi abordado cirurgicamente devido membrana epirretiniana com nova vitrectomia via pars plana para peeling de membrana limitante interna, sem repercussões no local da fístula, evoluindo bem com acuidade visual de 20/70 (0.55 LogMAR). Ao nosso conhecimento, este é o primeiro caso relatado nessa condição.

■ ABSTRACT Introduction: The oncological reconstruction of extensive defects in the head and neck requires the plastic surgeon to make a difficult decision between the use of free flaps and pedicled flaps. The supraclavicular flap is one of the main examples of a pedicled flap, being versatile, with a thin thickness and similar color to the region to be reconstructed. Method: A retrospective study was carried out by collecting data from medical records of patients admitted to the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo between December 2010 and March 2020. Results: Among the 62 patients reconstructed with a supraclavicular flap, 37 were male and 25 female. Fifty-eight patients (93.5%) had some associated comorbidity. In total, 27 complications related to the flap (43.5%) were recorded, 5 of which were total necrosis (8%). Conclusion: The supraclavicular flap plays an important role in head and neck oncological reconstructions and should be considered as an option in patients who are poor candidates for microsurgical flaps.

■ RESUMO Introdução: A reconstrução oncológica de defeitos extensos em cabeça e pescoço impõe ao cirurgião plástico a difícil decisão entre o uso de retalhos livres e retalhos pediculados. O retalho supraclavicular é um dos principais exemplos de retalho pediculado, sendo versátil, com espessura delgada e cor semelhante à região a ser reconstruída. Método: Um estudo retrospectivo foi realizado através da coleta de dados de prontuário de pacientes internados no Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo, entre dezembro de 2010 e março de 2020. Resultados: Dentre os 62 pacientes reconstruídos com retalho supraclavicular, 37 eram do sexo masculino e 25 do sexo feminino. Cinquenta e oito pacientes (93,5%) possuíam alguma comorbidade associada. Ao todo, 27 complicações relacionadas ao retalho (43,5%) foram registradas, sendo 5 necroses totais (8%). Conclusão: O retalho supraclavicular possui importante papel nas reconstruções oncológicas de cabeça e pescoço e deve ser considerado como opção em pacientes maus candidatos a retalhos microcirúrgicos.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.
