RESUMO: Varronia curassavica é uma espécie medicinal nativa no Brasil e sua propriedade anti-inflamatória é atribuída aos compostos α-humuleno e β-cariofileno. O objetivo foi estudar a variabilidade de população de V. curassavica. Foram coletadas folhas de 40 indivíduos de população natural, sendo estas transferidas para frascos de vidro (2 mL). Os voláteis foram extraídos e analisados por headspace estático, associado à cromatografia gasosa, acoplada à espectrometria de massas (HS-CG-EM). Detectou-se 17 compostos: monoterpenos (1,6% - 68%) e sesquiterpenos (25,7% - 79,0%), incluindo o α-humuleno e o β-cariofileno. A análise multivariada foi realizada para estimar a dissimilaridade dos indivíduos, a qual separou quatro grupos. O grupo I foi caracterizado pela presença do α-pineno, os grupos II e IV do β-cariofileno e o grupo III do β-pineno. O teor do α-humuleno apresentou pequenas variações, enquanto o do β-cariofileno contribuiu mais para a variabilidade da população. É o primeiro relato de análise da composição química de compostos voláteis de V. curassavica utilizando a técnica HS-GC-MS.

ABSTRACT: Varronia curassavica is a medicinal species native to Brazil; its anti-inflammatory properties are attributed to α-humulene and β-caryophyllene. This study to investigated the population variability of V. curassavica. Leaves were collected from 40 individuals of a natural population and transferred to glass flasks (2 mL). The volatiles were extracted and analyzed using static headspace gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS). A total of 17 compounds were detected: monoterpenes (1.6% - 68%) and sesquiterpenes (25.7% - 79.0%), including α-humulene and β-caryophyllene. Multivariate analysis was performed to estimate the dissimilarity of individuals separated the compounds into four groups. Group I was characterized by the content of α-pinene, groups II and IV by β-caryophyllene, and group III by β-pinene. The abundance of α-humulene showed small variations; while β-caryophyllene showed larger variations that contributed to the population variability. This is the first report on the chemical composition analysis of volatile compounds in V. curassavica using the HS-GC-MS technique.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is among the ten most frequent and deadly cancers, without effective therapies for most patients. More recently, drugs targeting deregulated growth factor signaling receptors have been developed, such as HGF-MET targeted therapy. We assessed MET and HGF genetic alterations and gene and protein expression profiles in ESCC patients from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute and publicly available datasets, as well as the intratumor heterogeneity of the alterations found. Our analyses showed that HGF and MET genetic alterations, both copy number and mutations, are not common in ESCC, affecting 5 and 6% of the cases, respectively. HGF showed a variable mRNA expression profile between datasets, with no alterations (GSE20347), downregulation (GSE45670), and upregulation in ESCC (our dataset and GSE75241). On the other hand, MET was found consistently upregulated in ESCC compared to non-tumor surrounding tissue, with median fold-changes of 5.96 (GSE20347), 3.83 (GSE45670), 6.02 (GSE75241), and 5.0 (our dataset). Among our patients, 84% of the tumors showed at least a two-fold increase in MET expression. This observation was corroborated by protein levels, with 55% of cases exhibiting positivity in 100% of the tumor cells. Intratumor heterogeneity was evaluated in at least four tumor biopsies from five patients and two cases showed a consistent increase in MET expression (at least two-fold) in all tumor samples. Our data suggested that HGF-MET signaling pathway was likely to be overactivated in ESCC, representing a potential therapeutic target, but eligibility for this therapy should consider intratumor heterogeneity.

Carassius auratus is a teleost fish that has been largely used in behavioral studies. However, little is known about potential environmental influences on its performance of learning and memory tasks. Here, we investigated this question in C. auratus, and searched for potential correlation between exercise and visuospatial enrichment with the total number of telencephalic glia and neurons. To that end, males and females were housed for 183 days in either an enriched (EE) or impoverished environment (IE) aquarium. EE contained toys, natural plants, and a 12-hour/day water stream for voluntary exercise, whereas the IE had none of the above. A third plus-maze aquarium was used for spatial and object recognition tests. Different visual clues in 2 of its 4 arms were used to guide fish to reach the criteria to complete the task. The test consisted of 30 sessions and was concluded when each animal performed three consecutive correct choices or seven alternated, each ten trials. Learning rates revealed significant differences between EE and IE fish. The optical fractionator was used to estimate the total number of telencephalic cells that were stained with cresyl violet. On average, the total number of cells in the subjects from EE was higher than those from subjects maintained in IE (P=0.0202). We suggest that environmental enrichment significantly influenced goldfish spatial learning and memory abilities, and this may be associated with an increase in the total number of telencephalic cells.

RESUMO O presente trabalho avaliou o papel do baço no armazenamento e na reativação das linhagens de células B, representadas por células IgM positivas imunomarcadas no tecido esplênico, bem como a funcionalidade dessas células, sobre a cinética dos linfócitos e na produção sistêmica de anticorpos em tilápias-do-nilo (Oreochromis niloticus). Foram separados dois grupos: grupo memória, constituído por peixes previamente imunizados com hemácia de carneiro a 2,5%, para a geração da memória imune, e o grupo naive, que recebeu o mesmo volume de solução salina a 0,65%. Após 32 dias, os dois grupos foram submetidos a uma nova dose do antígeno na mesma concentração, volume e via de inoculação. A reativação dos clones de memória foi evidenciada pelo aumento do número de células IgM positivas no baço do grupo memória no dia zero/pré-imune. Além disso, o mesmo grupo apresentou aumento dos títulos de anticorpos séricos no 14º dia e no número absoluto de linfócitos no 21º dia em relação ao grupo naive. Esses resultados sugerem que o baço não seja apenas um local de armazenamento, mas também de reativação de células B de memória em tilápia-do-nilo.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the role of the spleen in storage and reactivation of the memory B cells, represented by IgM positive cells and the systemic production of sheep antibodies anti-red cell in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Two groups were established: the memory group, containing fish previously immunized with a 2,5% sheep anti-red cell, to generate the immune memory; and the naive group, containing fish that received a 0,65% saline solution. After 32 days, both groups were subjected to a new dose of the same antigen at the same concentration, volume, and inoculation via. The memory clones reactivation was correlated to the increase of the IgM positive cells in the spleen in the memory group at 0 day. The memory group showed an increase in the absolute number of lymphocytes at 21 days and an increase in the antibodies at 14 days after inoculation when compared to the naive group. The results suggest that the spleen may be a storage and reactivation place of memory B cells in Nile tilapia.

A bactéria Streptococcus agalactiae é um potente agente causador de surtos por doenças bacterianas em peixes. O estresse provocado pelo manejo zootécnico e pela má qualidade ambiental torna a tilápia susceptível às infecções por essa bactéria. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a resistência de tilápias-do-nilo imunizadas com soro hiperimune anti-S. agalactiae, posteriormente desafiadas com cepa homóloga da mesma bactéria. Após determinação da DL 50 de S. agalactiae, 36 tilápias foram distribuídas em quatro aquários, dois para o grupo controle e dois para inoculação celomática para produção de anticorpos anti-S. agalactiae. No 21° e 28° dias, foi coletado sangue para obtenção de soro hiperimune utilizado na transferência passiva. Em seguida, 30 tilápias foram distribuídas em três aquários e submetidas a três tratamentos: GI: controle; GII: imunizadas com o soro inativado; GIII: imunizadas com soro ativo. Após 48 horas e sete, 14, 21, 28 e 35 dias, foram realizadas coletas de sangue para titulação de anticorpos anti-S. agalactiae utilizando-se o teste de aglutinação direta. Para avaliar a taxa de sobrevivência, outras 30 tilápias foram distribuídas em três aquários e submetidas a três tratamentos (GI: controle; GII: imunizadas com soro inativado; GIII: imunizadas com soro ativo). Após 48 horas da imunização, as tilápias foram desafiadas via celomática com 100µL de S. agalactiae e avaliadas duas vezes ao dia, pelo período de 35 dias. Os resultados dos títulos séricos de anticorpos foram detectados pela aglutinação direta até o 21° dia pós-transferência passiva, e, no mesmo período, houve proteção de 80% entre os grupos imunizados com soro inativado e soro ativo contendo anticorpos anti-S. agalactiae. Ao final, os grupos soro inativado e soro ativo apresentaram 60 e 80% de proteção, respectivamente, enquanto no grupo controle 100% dos peixes adoeceram, apresentando sinais graves da infecção, e foram eutanasiados. Não houve diferença estatística significativa na taxa de proteção entre os grupos imunizados.

The Streptococcus agalactiae bacteria is a potent agent which causes outbreaks of bacterial diseases in fish. The stress caused by management and poor environmental quality makes tilapia susceptible to infections, including by bacterium. The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance of the Nile tilapia immunized with hyperimmune serum against S. agalactiae subsequently challenged with homologous strain of the same bacteria. After determining the DL 50 of S. agalactiae, 36 tilapias were distributed in 4 aquariums, 2 for the control group and 2 for the group via coelomic, inoculated with the DL 50 for anti-S. agalactiae antibodies production. On the 21st and 28th day blood was collected for the obtainment of hiperimmune serum used in passive transference. Then, 30 tilapias were distributed in 3 aquariums submitted to 3 treatments (GI: control; GII: immunized with inactivated-serum; GIII: immunized with non-inactivated serum). After 48 hours, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days blood collections were done for anti-S. agalactiae antibodies titration using the direct agglutination test. For survival evaluation 30 tilapias were distributed in 3 aquariums and submitted to 3 treatments (GI: control; GII: immunized with inactivated-serum; GIII: immunized with non-inactivated serum). After 48 hours of inoculation tilapias were challenged with 100µL of S. agalactiae and monitored twice a day for 35 days. The results showed that titers of antibodies were detected by direct agglutination until the 21st day after passive transference and during the same period the protection between the groups immunized with inactivated serum and non-inactivated serum contending anti-S. agalactiae antibodies was of 80% after challenge with S. agalactiae. In the end, the serum-inactivated serum and active groups had 60 and 80% protection, respectively, while 100% of the fish in the control group developed severe signs of infection and were euthanized. There was no statistical difference in the survival rate between the immunized groups.

RESUMOA espécie Bombax malabaricum, popularmente conhecida por paineira-vermelha, apresenta metabólitos secundários de interesse medicinal. Como outras espécies da família Malvaceae, suas sementes possuem dormência tegumentar, o que dificulta sua propagação sexuada. Assim, o presente trabalho objetivou superar a dormência de sementes de B.malabaricum por métodos físicos e químicos. Os métodos utilizados na escarificação mecânica foram: abrasão do tegumento com lixa e corte com tesoura na região oposta ao hilo. Para a escarificação química foram utilizados: ácido clorídrico (HCl), ácido nítrico (HNO3), ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4), hidróxido de sódio (NaOH) e hidróxido de potássio (KOH) por um período de 30 minutos. Também houve imersão de sementes em 40 mg L-1 de GA3 pelo mesmo período. Foram utilizadas quatro repetições por tratamento, constituídas de 25 sementes por placa e conduzidas em Câmara de Germinação. Os dados obtidos foram utilizados para o cálculo da Germinabilidade, Índice de Velocidade de Germinação, Tempo Médio de Germinação, e Porcentagem de Sementes Deterioradas. O HNO3 mostrou-se como o melhor tratamento na variável Germinabilidade (83,5%), seguido do HCl (71,5%) e das técnicas de escarificação mecânica, com lixa (71,5%) e tesoura (67,5%). O HNO3também apresentou o menor número de sementes deterioradas (3,5%); o H2SO4 foi o tratamento que mais causou danos às sementes (36,5%).

ABSTRACTThe species Bombax malabaricum, popularly known as red-cotton tree, presents secondary metabolites of medicinal interest. Like other species of the Malvaceae, their seeds have tegumentary dormancy, which hinders their sexual propagation. Thus, this study aimed to break the dormancy of B. malabaricum through physical and chemical strategies. For mechanical scarification of the seeds it were employed: abrasion of the tegument with sandpaper and cut with scissors in the region opposite to the hilum. For chemical scarification: hydrochloric acid (HCl), nitric acid (HNO3), sulphuric acid (H2SO4), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) for a period of 30 minutes. The seeds were also subjected to immersion in 40 mg L-1 of GA3 for the same period. Four replicates of 25 seeds were used for each treatment and then they were conducted for calculation in a B.O.D. germination Chamber. The results obtained were applied in order to calculate: Germination, Germination Speed Index, Average Time of Germination and Percentage of Damaged Seeds. The HNO3proved to be the best treatment in the Germination trials (83.5%), followed by the HCl (71.5%) and the mechanical scarification techniques with sandpaper (71.5%) and scissors (67.5%). The HNO3 also showed the lowest percentage of damaged seeds (3.5%); The H2SO4 was the treatment that caused more damage to the seeds (36.5%).

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is important in oncology because of its high mortality rate. Deaths may be avoided if an early diagnosis could be achieved. Several types of tumors overexpress gastrin-releasing peptide receptors (GRPr), including pancreatic cancer cells. Thus, a radiolabeled peptide derivative of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) may be useful as a specific imaging probe. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of using99mTc-HYNIC-βAla-Bombesin(7-14)as an imaging probe for Capan-1 pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Xenographic pancreatic tumor was developed in nude mice and characterized by histopathological analysis. Biodistribution studies and scintigraphic images were carried out in tumor-bearing nude mice. The two methods showed higher uptake by pancreatic tumor when compared to muscle (used as control), and the tumor-to-muscle ratio indicated that99mTc-HYNIC-βAla-Bombesin(7-14)uptake was four-fold higher in tumor cells than in other tissues. Scintigraphic images also showed a clear signal at the tumor site. The present data indicate that99mTc-HYNIC-βAla-Bombesin(7-14)may be useful for the detection of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Determinou-se a melhor relação vitamina E:vitamina C em dietas para frangos de corte, visando ao melhor desempenho produtivo e à melhor qualidade da carne das aves submetidas ao estresse pré-abate. Utilizaram-se 800 pintos de corte, machos, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2x4, com dois níveis de suplementação de vitamina E - 0 e 250mg/kg - e quatro de vitamina C - 0, 150, 300 e 450mg/kg. Aos 42 dias de idade, 12 horas ante mortem, amostras de aves de cada tratamento foram submetidas ao estresse por calor e, em seguida, pelo transporte. Foram avaliadas características de desempenho - peso vivo, consumo de ração e conversão alimentar - , bem como rendimento de carcaça e qualidade da carne de peito e coxas - perda de água, cor e pH. Os níveis de vitaminas avaliadas não influenciaram nas características de desempenho avaliadas. Houve menor rendimento de peito (34,2 vs. 34,9%) e maior pH inicial (6,3 vs. 6,1) dos cortes, para aves que sofreram estresse em relação àquelas que não foram submetidas ao estresse pré-abate.

The best relationship for vitamin E:vitamin C in diets for broilers regarding growth performance and meat quality of birds submitted to pre-slaughter stress was determined. 800 male chicks at one day of age were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2x4 factorial scheme, with two levels of vitamin E supplementation - 0 and 250mg/kg - and four of vitamin C - 0, 150, 300 and 450mg/kg. At 42 days of age, 12 hours ante-mortem, samples of birds from each treatment were submitted to heat stress and then transportation. The performance characteristics evaluated were body weight, feed intake and feed:gain ratio, carcass yield and meat quality of breast and thighs, water loss, color and pH. The levels of vitamins evaluated did not influence the performance characteristics measured. There was a lower breast yield (34.2 vs 34.9%) and higher initial pH (6.3 vs 6.1) in the cuts for birds that suffered stress than for those who did not undergo pre-slaughter stress.

Foram realizados três experimentos para determinar as exigências de lisina digestível para aves da linhagem ISA Label, de ambos os sexos, criadas em semiconfinamento durante as fases: inicial (1 a 28 dias), de crescimento (28 a 56 dias) e final (56 a 84 dias). Em cada experimento, foram utilizadas 480 aves, alojadas em 24 piquetes, cada um contendo abrigo coberto de 3,13m² e área de pastejo de 72,87m². O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 4x2 (níveis de lisina e sexo) com três repetições de 20 aves cada. Os níveis de lisina digestível avaliados foram: 0,850; 0,970; 1,090 e 1,210% na fase inicial; 0,750; 0,870; 0,990 e 1,110% na fase de crescimento e 0,640; 0,760; 0,880 e 1,000% na fase final. Foram mensuradas as variáveis de desempenho, característica de carcaça, deposição de proteína e gordura corporal, peso e teor de proteína das penas. Com base nos resultados de desempenho, recomendam-se 1, 041; 1,006 e 0,760% de lisina digestível em rações para aves ISA Label nas fases inicial, de crescimento e final, respectivamente.

Three assays were carried out to determine digestible lysine requirement for ISA Label, both genders, in free-range system on starter (1 to 28 days), growing (28 to 56 days) e finishing phases (56 to 84 days). A total of 480 birds were distributed into 24 pens, each one composed by shelter (3.13m²) and pasture (72.87m²). The experimental design was a completely randomized in factorial arrangement (four levels of lysine and two genders) with three replicates of 20 birds. The digestible lysine levels were 0.85, 0.97, 1.09, and 1.21% for starter; 0.75, 0.87, 0.99, and 1.11% for growing; and 0.64, 0.76, 0.88, and 1.00% for finishing phases. The analyzed parameters were performance, carcass yield, protein and fat deposition, weight, and protein in the feathers. Based on bird performance the estimated digestible lysine level, was 1.041, 1.006, and 0.760% for the starter, growing and finishing phases, respectively.

O agente etiológico da doença de Chagas, Trypanosoma cruzi, ocorre como cepas ou isolados que podem ser agrupados em duas grandes linhagens filogenéticas: T. cruzi I associada ao ciclo silvestre e T. cruzi II ligada à doençahumana. No hospedeiro mamífero o parasita tem que invadir células, e vários estudos relacionam as formas flageladas tripomastigotas neste processo. Diferentes componentes de superfície dos parasitas e alguns dos respectivos receptores foram identificados. Em nosso trabalho temos procurado compreender como amastigotas, que normalmente são encontrados crescendo no citoplasma, podem invadir células de mamíferos com infectividade comparável às dos tripomastigotas. Encontramos diferenças nas respostas celulares induzidas por amastigotas e tripomastigotas em relação a componentes de citoesqueleto e projeções de membrana ricas em actina. Amastigotas de cepas de T. cruzi I gerados extracelularmente, podem apresentar infectividade maior que tripomastigotas metacíclicos para linhagens celulares e células com expressão alterada em diferentes classes de componentes celulares. Células albergando a bactéria Coxiella burnetii tem nos permitido obter novos enfoques sobre as propriedades de tráfego intracelular das diferentes formas infectivas do T. cruzi, revelando requerimentos inesperados para o parasita transitar entre seu vacúolo parasitóforo até seu destino final no citoplasma da célula hospedeira.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas’ disease, occurs as different strains or isolates that may be grouped in two major phylogenetic lineages: T. cruzi I, associated with the sylvatic cycle and T. cruzi II, linked to the human disease. In the mammalian host the parasite has to invade cells and many studies implicated the flagellated trypomastigotes in this process. Several parasite surface components and some of host cell receptors with which they interact have been identified. Our work focused on how amastigotes, usually found growing in the cytoplasm, can invade mammalian cells with infectivities comparable to that of trypomastigotes. We found differences in cellular responses induced by amastigotes and trypomastigotes regarding cytoskeletal components and actin-rich projections. Extracellularly generated amastigotes of T. cruzi I strains may display greater infectivity than metacyclic trypomastigotes towards cultured cell lines as well as target cells that have modified expression of different classes of cellular components. Cultured host cells harboring the bacterium Coxiella burnetii allowed us to gain new insights into the trafficking properties of the different infective forms of T. cruzi, disclosing unexpected requirements for the parasite to transit between the parasitophorous vacuole to its final destination in the host cell cytoplasm.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of bladder carcinoma infiltrating the prostate and prostate adenocarcinoma in patients undergoing radical cystoprostatectomy due to bladder cancer, as well as to assess if the characteristics of the bladder neoplasia influence the prostatic involvement by this neoplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed 60 male patients, who underwent radical cystoprostatectomy between July 1997 and December 2003. Mean age was 66.7 years (40 and 93 years). The product of radical cystoprostatectomies was checked for involvement of urethra and prostate parenchyma by the primary neoplasia, and for the presence of associated prostate adenocarcinoma. Bladder neoplasia characteristics, such as localization, size, multifocality, association with in situ carcinoma and histological grade, were studied in order to assess the possibility of using such characteristics as predictive factors of prostate infiltration by bladder urothelial carcinoma. RESULTS: We observed the presence of 20% of patients with bladder carcinoma infiltrating the prostatic urethra, 23.3% of patients with infiltration of the prostate parenchyma and 28.3% of patients with associate prostate adenocarcinoma, resulting in a total of 55% of patients with prostatic involvement (infiltrative bladder carcinoma and/or adenocarcinoma). We also observed a statistically significant correlation between tumor location in the trigone, the presence of in situ carcinoma and the histological grade of the bladder tumor with prostatic infiltration by the vesical neoplasia. CONCLUSION: The coexistence of prostatic neoplasia in patients operated for bladder neoplasia was frequent in our sample (55%). We observed that the prostatic infiltration by bladder tumors occurs more frequently with tumors located in the trigone, with associated in situ carcinoma and with high histological grade. There was no correlation between neoplastic infiltration of prostate and multifocality or size of the bladder tumor in the studied sample.

Baccharis dracunculifolia D. C. (Asteraceae) é uma espécie arbustiva dióica que apresenta características invasoras e colonizadoras e potencial para recuperação de áreas degradadas. Estudou-se o comportamento germinativo de aquênios de Baccharis dracunculifolia recém coletados e estocados por um ano. Aquênios coletados em 1998 foram postos para germinar em quatro repetições de 25 aquênios nas temperaturas de 15º, 20º, 25º e 30ºC sob luz ou escuro contínuo, enquanto que os coletados em 1997 germinaram a 20º e a 25ºC. As médias de germinação e o índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE) foram calculados para responder às seguintes perguntas: (a) Como varia o comportamento germinativo dos aquênios de B. dracunculifolia sob diferentes condições de luz e temperatura? (b) Existe relação entre o número total de aquênios germinados e o IVE? (c) O armazenamento afeta as porcentagens de germinação? Os aquênios que germinaram a 15ºC na presença e na ausência de luz e a 20ºC na luz obtiveram porcentagens de germinação significativamente maiores que os aquênios que germinaram sob os demais tratamentos (p < 0,05). Também foi verificada a relação positiva entre o IVE e as porcentagens de germinação dos aquênios de B. dracunculifolia (y = 0,0802x - 0,0386; r² = 0,91; p < 0,05), sendo os maiores IVE's encontrados para os aquênios que germinaram a 15º e a 20ºC sob luz e a 15ºC no escuro. O armazenamento dos aquênios afetou significativamente apenas as porcentagens de germinação à temperatura de 20ºC na luz (p < 0,05).

We studied the germination of Baccharis dracunculifolia (Asteraceae), achene, a species that has colonizing traits, which makes it a potential candidate for forest rehabilitation. Achenes were collected in 1998 and were germinated at 15º, 20º, 25º and 30ºC under continuous light, and darkness conditions with four replicates with 25 achenes in each. We had also collected achenes in 1997, ând they were germinated at 20º and 25ºC, under the same conditions. The mean germination rate and emergency velocity index (EVI) were calculated to answer the following questions: (a) How does the germination behavior of B. dracunculifolia's achenes vary under different temperature and light conditions? (b) Is there any relationship between the total number of germinated achenes and the EVI? (c) How does achene storage affect the germination rate? Achenes that germinated at 15ºC both under light and dark conditions and at 20ºC under light achieved significantly higher germination rates than achenes that germinated in the other treatments (p < 0.05). Achenes of B. dracunculifolia showed a positive relationship between EVI and germination rates (y = 0.0802x - 0.0386, r² = 0.91, p < 0.05). Higher EVI's were found among achenes that germinated at 15º and 20ºC under light and 15ºC under dark treatments. Storage only affected the germination rates at 20ºC under light condition (p < 0.05).

A hipótese do vigor de plantas (HVP) prediz que plantas ou módulos de plantas mais vigorosos são preferencialmente selecionados por fêmeas de insetos galhadores como sítios de oviposição, pois aumentam a chance de sobrevivência da prole. A HVP foi testada para Neopelma baccharidis Buckhardt (Homoptera: Psyllidae) e Rhoasphondylia friburgensis Tavares (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) que causam galhas em Baccharis dracunculifolia D.C. (Asteraceae), e para duas espécies diferentes de Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) que provocam galhas em Maytenus salicifolia Reiss. (Celastraceae) e Vernonia polyanthes Less (Asteraceae). A abundância de galhas aumentou com o aumento do comprimento do ramo nas quatro espécies, como previsto pela HVP. Entretanto, ao considerarmos a taxa de ataque por unidade de ramo (cm), que inclui nas análises o efeito da disponibilidade de recursos por unidade de comprimento, o padrão de resposta dos quatro galhadores desapareceu. R. friburgensis e o cecidomiídeo que induz galhas em M. salicifolia não responderam ao vigor do ramo (P > 0,05), enquanto as outras espécies responderam diferencialmente. A abundância de galhas de N. baccharidis correlacionou-se negativamente com o aumento do comprimento do ramo (y = 0,185 - 0,007x; r² = 0,21; F = 6,013, P < 0,05), enquanto o número de galhas provocadas pelo cecidomiídeo em V. polyanthes correlacionou-se positivamente com o vigor do ramo (y = 0,09 + 0,002x; r² = 0,34; F = 6,157; P < 0,05). Portanto, apenas o padrão de ataque do cecidomíideo galhador em V. polyanthes suportou a HVP.

The plant-vigor hypothesis (PVH) predicts that females of galling insects preferentially oviposit on the most vigorous plant or plant modules, where their offspring performance is highest. We tested the PVH on Neopelma baccharidis Buckhardt (Homoptera: Psyllidae) and Rhoasphondylia friburgensis Tavares (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) which induce galls on Baccharis dracunculifolia D.C. (Asteraceae), and on two different Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) species that induce galls on Maytenus salicifolia Reiss. (Celastraceae) and Vernonia polyanthes Less (Asteraceae), respectively. The abundance of galls induced by the four galling species increased with increasing shoot length, as predicted by the PVH. However, when we considered the rate of attack per shoot unit length (cm), which includes in the analyses the effect of availability of resource per unit length, the response patterns of the four gallers disappeared. R. friburgensis and Cecidomyiidae species which cause galls on M. salicifolia did not respond to shoot vigor (P > 0.05) while the other species responded differentially. The abundance of N. baccharidis galls correlated negatively with shoot length (y = 0.185 - 0.007x, r² = 0.21, F = 6.013, P < 0.05) while the number of galls caused by Cecidomyiidae on V. polyanthes showed a positive relationship with shoot vigor (y = 0.09 + 0.002x, r² = 0.34, F = 6.157, P < 0.05). Hence, only the attack pattern of the cecidomyiid galler on V. polyanthes corroborated the PVH.
