A caracterização morfológica de genótipos de couve é necessária bem como as estimativas da divergência genética entre os mesmos. O presente trabalho teve como objetivos estudar os caracteres morfológicos dos genótipos de couve oriundos do banco de germoplasma da UFVJM, a divergência genética existente entre os genótipos e a importância destes caracteres nas estimativas da divergência. O experimento foi conduzido no Setor de Olericultura da UFVJM, Diamantina-MG, utilizando-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados com trinta genótipos e quatro repetições, constituídas por cinco plantas. Para a caracterização morfológica avaliaram-se em cada planta quarenta e quatro características. Verificou-se que há genótipos com grande divergência genética entre si, sendo os genótipos UFLA-6 e UFVJM-24 os mais divergentes em relação aos demais, contudo, a maioria dos genótipos é similar. Verificou-se também que há características importantes que podem ser usadas nas estimativas da divergência.

The morphological characterization of genotypes of kale is needed as well as the estimates of genetic divergence between them. We studied the morphological characters of kale genotypes originated from the germplasm bank of UFVJM, the genetic divergence among the genotypes and the importance of these characters in the estimates of divergence. The experiment was carried out in the Department of Horticulture of UFVJM, Diamantina, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, using the randomized complete block design with four replications and thirty genotypes, consisting of five plants. Forty-four traits were evaluated on each plant for morphological evaluations. Some genotypes showed high genetic divergence, such as the genotypes UFLA-6 and 24-UFVJM, which were the most divergent compared to the others. Most of the genotypes, however, were similar to each other. It was also observed that there are important characteristics that can be used in the estimation of divergence.

Com o objetivo de avaliar produtos químicos no controle da mancha-bacteriana em tomate para processamento industrial, foram conduzidos dois ensaios na área experimental da Unilever Bestfoods, em Goiânia-GO. No primeiro, o híbrido Heinz 9992 foi inoculado com Xanthomonas perforans em blocos casualizados, com 15 tratamentos e três repetições. O segundo ensaio foi em blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas com três repetições. A parcela principal foi "tratamento químico" (10 tratamentos) e a subparcela "híbrido" (Hypeel 108 e U2006). Inoculou-se X. perforans e X. gardneri. Em ambos os ensaios os produtos testados, em diferentes números de aplicações e regimes, foram: acibenzolar-S-metil (ASM); famoxadona + mancozebe; metiram + piraclostrobina; fosfito PK; cloretos de benzalcônio; óxido cuproso e hidróxido de cobre (SC, WP e WG). Em ambos os ensaios, foram avaliados severidade da doença nas folhas, número de frutos com sintomas e produtividade. No segundo ensaio avaliou-se também o número de frutos com escaldadura. No primeiro ensaio foram detectadas diferenças significativas (p>0,05) entre os tratamentos somente nas duas primeiras avaliações de severidade, mas nenhum dos tratamentos diferiu da testemunha. No segundo ensaio, para severidade foliar, foi detectada diferença significativa apenas para os híbridos na primeira avaliação. Para número de frutos com sintomas e escaldadura a interação entre os fatores "tratamento químico" e "híbrido" foi também significativa. Nas folhas, 'U2006' foi mais resistente do que 'Hypeel 108', que apresentou maior incidência de escaldadura, mas nos frutos ocorreu o inverso. Para produtividade, os dois fatores foram significativos. 'U2006' foi mais produtivo do que 'Hypeel 108'. Entre os 10 tratamentos químicos, apesar de nenhum ter diferido da testemunha, famoxadona + mancozebe, que resultou em maior produtividade, diferiu de hidróxido de cobre (WG), ASM - famoxadona + mancozebe e cloretos de benzalcônio. ASM e famoxadona + mancozebe foram os que promoveram uma relação benefício/custo superior a 1.

In order to evaluate chemical control of bacterial spot on tomato for industrial processing, two field trials were carried out at the Unilever Bestfoods experimental station, in Goiânia, Goias state, Brazil. The first trial was in a randomized complete block design, with 15 treatments and three replications, using the hybrid Heinz 9992 inoculated with Xanthomonas perforans. The second trial was in a split-plot randomized complete block design with chemical foliar applications (10 treatments) and hybrids (Hypeel 108 and U2006) as factors. Plants were inoculated with X. perforans and X. gardneri. In both trials the chemicals, in different number of applications and combinations, were: acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM); famoxadone + mancozeb; metiram + pyraclostrobin; phosphite PK; benzalkonium chlorides; cuprous oxide, and copper hydroxide (SC, WP and WG). For both trials, disease severity on leaves, number of fruits with symptoms and yield were evaluated. In the second one, sunscald was also evaluated. For the first trial, significant severity differences (p>0.05) among treatments were observed only in the first two evaluations, but none of them differed from the water check control. In the second trial, significant differences were detected only in foliar severity in first evaluation for hybrids. For number of fruits with symptoms and sunscald, besides hybrids, interaction among factors was also significant. 'U2006' was more resistant than 'Hypeel 108', which also had highest sunscald values, but concerning fruits with symptoms, the opposite was observed. The two factors were significant for yield data, 'U2006' yielded better than 'Hypeel 108'. Despite none of the treatments have differed in yield from the water control, famoxadone + mancozeb, which resulted in the highest yield, differed from copper hydroxide, ASM - famoxadone + mancozeb, and benzalkonium chlorides. ASM and famoxadone + mancozeb were those that promoted benefit/cost relation higher than 1.

INTRODUÇÃO: A escoliose idiopática do adolescente (EIA) é uma deformidade tridimensional, na qual sua progressão pode levar à diminuição da qualidade de vida (QDV). OBJETIVOS: Verificar o melhor questionário, SF-36 ou SRS-22, para avaliar a QDV na EIA. Secundariamente, avaliar a correlação entre o grau do ângulo de Cobb com a escala visual analógica (EVA) e verificar qual o melhor questionário, Oswestry ou Roland Morris, para avaliar a funcionalidade na EIA. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Participaram 19 indivíduos com EIA, idade entre 11 a 18 anos e ângulo de Cobb acima de 25º. Foram utilizados os questionários SF-36 e SRS-22, Oswestry e Roland Morris e a EVA. Os RESULTADOS: A população avaliada apresentou média de idade de 14,5 (3,1), peso 51 kg (7,9), altura 1,61 (0,08) e IMC 18,75 (2,7). Os coeficientes de correlação de Pearson entre o questionário Oswestry e os ângulos de Cobb torácico proximal, torácico principal e lombar foram, respectivamente: r = 0,58, r = 0,77 e r = 0,58. Ao correlacionar o questionário Roland Morris com os ângulos de Cobb torácico proximal e lombar, os coeficientes foram, respectivamente: r = 0,72 e r = 0,52. Ao correlacionar o Cobb lombar com o EVA, foi encontrado r = 0,55. Conclusão: Foi constatada forte correlação entre o questionário Oswestry com o ângulo de Cobb torácico principal e entre o questionário Roland Morris com o ângulo de Cobb torácico principal.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) presents a three-dimensional deformity in which progression can lead to decreased quality of life (QOL). OBJECTIVES:Determine the best questionnaire, SF-36 or SRS-22 to evaluate QOL in EIA. Secondarily, investigate the correlation between the degree of Cobb angle with visual analogue scale (VAS), and determine the best questionnaire, Oswestry or Roland Morris to evaluate the function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 19 subjects with EIA, aged 11 to 18, both gender, and Cobb angle above 25 Cobb degrees. We used the SF-36 and SRS-22 questionnaires to evaluate QOL, Oswestry and Roland Morris to evaluate the function and correlate Cobb degree and VAS. The questionnaires and scale were correlated with proximal thoracic, main thoracic and lumbar Cobb angles. RESULTS:The population studied had a mean age of 14.5 (3.1), weight 51 kg (7.9), height 1.61 m (0.08), BMI 18.75 (2.7). The Pearson correlation coefficients between the Oswestry questionnaire and the Cobb angles proximal thoracic, main thoracic and lumbar spine were, respectively: r = 0.58, r = 0.77 and r = 0.58. By correlating the Roland Morris questionnaire with Cobb angles of proximal thoracic and lumbar spine were, respectively: r = 0.72 and r = 0.52. By correlating with lumbar Cobb EVA was found r = 0.55. CONCLUSION:We found a strong correlation between the Oswestry questionnaire with the main thoracic Cobb angle and between the Roland Morris questionnaire with the main thoracic Cobb angle.

The present research aimed at evaluating the influence of the water quality in the life cycle and attraction of Aedes aegypti (L.) females to oviposit using different sources of water (raw sewage, effluent of UASB reactor, effluent of polishing lagoon, effluent of anaerobic filter, rain water and de-chlorinated water). The immature development time and survivorship were evaluated on a daily basis in two distinct feeding systems (with and without food). The quality of the water was shown to affect the egg and larval stages, but not the pupal or the adult. In the absence of food, no development was observed in rain water and de-chlorinated water. Immature development was faster in water sources from raw sewage, although with the lowest survivorship (37.3%). Free-choice tests indicated that females preferred to lay most of their eggs on water collected from the effluent of a UASB reactor, achieving the highest oviposition activity index (OAI) of 0.57. In non-choice tests, females laid larger batches of eggs in water collected from anaerobic filters (204.8 eggs), with the lowest number of eggs being laid on de-chlorinated water (37.3 eggs). It can be concluded that A. aegypti does not demonstrate any particular preference to lay eggs on clean water. This has serious implications for developing strategies to manage populations of this important vector in urban areas as it was shown to lay eggs and successfully develop on several different sources of water.

A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo avaliar a influência da densidade larval sobre o ciclo de vida, tamanho e fecundidade de Aedes aegypti (L.). Os bioensaios foram conduzidos a 26 ± 2ºC e 12h de luz. Foram utilizadas cinco densidades larvais (200, 500, 750, 1000 e 1250 larvas/l) e dois sistemas de alimentação (um com alimentação fixa de 100 mg de ração e outro com quantidade de alimento proporcional ao número de larvas/bandeja). Avaliou-se diariamente, o tempo de desenvolvimento e sobrevivência de ovo e larva, a razão sexual, a longevidade, a fecundidade e o tamanho dos adultos. O ciclo de vida de A. aegypti foi significativamente afetado pela densidade quando ofertados 100 mg de ração por bandeja. O período de desenvolvimento larval aumentou de 8,3 para 37,9 dias, a fecundidade diminuiu de 105,7 para 41,8 ovos/fêmea assim como o comprimento alar de 4,6 mm para 3,6 mm, quando comparadas às densidades de 200 para 1250 larvas/l, respectivamente. Não foram detectadas diferenças significativas dessas variáveis quando foram ofertados 1,9 mg de ração por larva, exceto para o tamanho dos adultos. Fêmeas criadas a 1250 larvas/l foram maiores, com comprimento alar médio de 5,2 mm.

We focused on the evaluation of the influence that the larval density have on the life cycle, size and fecundity of Aedes aegypti (L.). The bioassays were conducted at 26 ± 2ºC and at 12h light. Five larval densities (200, 500, 750, 1000 and 1250 larvae/l) and two feeding systems (one with a fixed amount of 100 mg of food, and other with an amount of food proportional to the number of larvae/tray) were tested. Egg and larval development time and survivorship, sex ratio, longevity, fecundity and the size of adults were evaluated on a daily basis. The life cycle of A. aegypti was significantly affected by the density when offered 100 mg of food per tray. The period of larval development increased from 8.3 to 37.9 days whereas female fecundity and wing length decreased from 105.7 to 41.8 eggs/female and from 4.6 mm to 3.6 mm, respectively, by changing from a density of 200 to 1250 larvae/l. Significant differences of these variables were not detected when offering 1.9 mg of food per larvae, except for the size of the adults. Females emerged from rearing densities of 1250 larvae/l grew larger, with an average wing length of 5.2 mm.

Foram estudados 9162 pacientes atendidos no INCOR, com o diagnóstico de IAM, de janeiro de 1983 a dezembro de 1993. Destes, 1,05% apresentaram rotura cardíaca de origem isquêmica como complicação do infarto miocárdico. A faixa etária média foi de 69,5 anos, predominando os pacientes de raça branca (93,75%) e do sexo feminino (55,3%). Os dados estudados incluíram história clínica, exames laboratoriais subsidiários, drogas utilizadas e achados cirúrgicos ou de necropsia. As roturas cardíacas foram classificadas, de acordo com a literatura, em agudas e sub-agudas. Observamos 72 casos de rotura miocárdica aguda com taxa de mortalidade de 98,6% e 24 casos de rotura sub-aguda com 41,6% de óbitos. Foram operados 4 pacientes na forma aguda e 15 na forma sub-aguda, resultando em 78,9% de sobrevida pósoperatória. Dos pacientes que receberam terapia trombolítica com sucesso 76,4% faleceram, enquanto que, dos pacientes tratados convencionalmente, esse número chegou a 86,1 %. Quando a terapia trombolítica foi administrada até 1 hora após o IAM, a mortalidade foi de 33,3%, dentre 3 e 6 horas foi de 60% e após 6 horas foi de 100%. A rotura ocorreu após 5 dias do IAM somente em 5,9% dos pacientes que receberam trombolíticos, enquanto que nos pacientes submetidos à terapêutica convencional esse índice elevou-se para 40,5%. Concluímos pela gravidade e necessidade de atuação imediata nos pacientes com rotura cardíaca, mesmo nos casos sub-agudos, quando 30% dos pacientes com suspeita ecocardiográfica de expansão em área isquêmica transmural falecem. Nas roturas agudas, a situação é dramática e a sobrevida está associada a fatores logísticos. Em condições sub-agudas, entretanto, pode-se dispor de técnicas que dispensam suturas e circulação extracorpórea, constituindo um importante recurso para o tratamento dessa grave complicação do IAM.

PURPOSE: Analise the incidence of cardiac rupture within the patients received in our hospital with the diagnosis of AMI in a period of 10 years and try to identify cases when the cardiac rupture can be submitted to a successful approach. METHODS: 9162 patients were received by INCOR with the diagnosis of AMI in the period from January 1983 to december 1993. From these patients 1.05% had cardiac rupture as an ischaemic complication of the myocardium infarction. The average of age was 69.5 years and showing a predominance of white people (93.75%) and female sex (55.3%). Data from patients include clinical history, complementary investigations, drugs used in the treatment and surgical or anatomopathological findings. The cardiac ruptures were classified as acute and sub-acute, according to literature. RESULTS: We found 72 cases of acute myocardial rupture with a mortality rate of 98.6% and 24 cases of sub-acute myocardial rupture with 41.6% of deaths. Four patients were operated on acute rupture and 15 patients were operated on subacute rupture. The post surgery survival was 78.9%. The patients who had a successful thrombolitic therapy, 76.4% died while the others who received routine therapy, 86.1 % passed away. Once the thrombolitic therapy was given until an hour the mortality was 33.3%; from 3 to 6 hours it was 60% and after 6 hours it was 100%. When it turns to the lenght of time of the onset of the cardiac rupture after I AM treatment, it happend after 5 days just in 5.9% of the patients who received trombolitic agents but in 40.5% of the patients with the routine therapy. CONCLUSIONS: We recognized the importance and the necessity of a immediate action for the patient with cardiac rupture even in sub-acute cases when 30% of the patients with an echographic probability of having a progression of the transmural ischaemic area die. In acute ruptures the situation is dramatic and survical depends on logistic factors. In sub-acute conditions however, new sutureless techniques without using extra-corporeal circulation are now available and they will have a huge importance in the treatment of this extremely serious complication of AMI.

É descrito método para correção cirúrgica da estenose aórtica adquirida, conseqüente a calcificação da valva aórtica e da aorta ascendente. Foi empregado tubo de Dacron preparado especialmente para o caso, valvulado com prótese biológica número 21, interposto entre o ápice do ventrículo esquerdo e a aorta torácica descendente. Esse conduto permitiu ao fluxo sangüíneo proveniente do ventrículo esquerdo (VE) ultrapassar a obstrução de sua via de saída, sendo ajetado diretamente na aorta descendente. O gradiente pressórico através da valva aórtica reduziu-se de 75 mmHg para 35 mm Hg e o gradiente registrado entre o VE e o conduto valvulado foi de 13 mmHg. A paciente teve boa evolução hospitalar, permanecendo assintomática decorridos quatro meses da operação.

A method of surgical correction for patients with acquired aortic stenosis involving calcification of the aortic valve and the ascending aorta has been described. A prosthesis to a 21 mm biological valved conduit, interposed between the left ventricular apex and descending thoracic aorta, permits the left ventricle to bypass the obstruction and eject directly into the aorta. The pressure gradient across the aortic valve was decreased from 75 to 31 mmHg, with a 13 mmHg gradient between the left ventricle and the valved conduit. The patients remains assymptomatic four mounths after the operation, without fatigue or shortness of breath.

Estudo experimental em 20 cães permitiu avaliar hemodinamicamente o grau de proteção miocárdica à anóxia, através do emprego de solução cardioplégica sangüínea e acelular. A Isquemia miocárdica foi obtida pelo pinçamento da aorta ascendente por 60 minutos, após instalação de circulação extracorpórea, seguida de reperfusão por 120 minutos. Os animais foram divididos em quatro grupos, sendo os dois primeiros controles, mantidos em normotermia e hipotermia moderada (28ºC). No terceiro e quarto grupo, além de hipotermia, foram realizadas infusões coronárias das duas soluções cardioplégicas. Todos os aniamis apresentaram queda do débito cardíaco (DC) aos 30 minutos de reperfusão miocárdica. Entretanto, decorridos 120 minutos, pode-se evidenciar, nos cães que receberam cardioplegia, a significativa recuperação da pressão sistólica (PS) do VE e a não elevação da pressão diastólica final (PDF) do VE, além da normalização do DC, o que não ocorreu nos grupos controle, especialmente em normotermia. No período de anóxia estudado, não foi possível demonstrar, com o método, diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre as soluções cardioplégicas.

This investigation was performed in order to evaluate the degree of myocardial protection in a group of 20 dogs. They were submitted to myocardial anoxia by cross-clamping of the ascending aorta for sixty minutes under extracorporeal circulation, followed by reperfusion for 120 minutes. Hemodynamic changes of the myocardium were studied, and the protection to anoxia offered by cardioplegic solutions and hypothermia was evaluated. The animals were divided in four groups with five dogs in each. In the first and second group, called control-group, myocardial anoxia was induced in normothermia and hypothermia (28ºC). In the third and fourth groups, besides the 28ºC systemic hypothermia, coronary infusions of cardioplegic solutions with and without blood were performed. In each group of dogs a significant lowering of cardiac output was observed at 30 minutes of myocardial reperfusion. Followed 120 minutes, group III and IV dogs showed cardiac output recovevy, and the lack of elevation in left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, indicating preservation of its mechanical function. This was not observed in other animals, in which cardioplegia was not used. Both cardioplegic solutions used protect efficiently the myocardial cells against anoxia in functional aspects. It was not possible, however, to demonstrate any superiority of the blood solution over an acellular solution.
