RESUMO Este estudo retrospectivo foi baseado em dados extraídos de prontuários de 48 cavalos com obstrução intestinal causada por enterólitos e / ou corpos estranhos observados ao longo de 17 anos. A análise dos dados teve como objetivo descrever as principais características desse tipo de cólica. Obstruções provocadas por enterólitos, corpos estranhos ou ambos foram responsáveis por 40 (83,34%), seis (12,50%) e dois (4,16%) casos nesta amostra, respectivamente. Os cavalos afetados tinham entre um e 32 anos (idade média de 9,5 anos), e 14 cavalos foram alimentados com alfafa. Acredita-se que a alfafa contribua para a formação de enterólitos. Corpos estranhos e enterólitos foram encontrados no cólon transverso (12 casos, 25%), maior ou menor (10 casos, 20,83%, respectivamente). A obstrução simultânea de diferentes segmentos intestinais também foi registrada. Estes envolveram o cólon menor e o cólon maior em 10 casos (20,83%), o cólon transverso e o cólon maior em quatro casos (8,33%), o cólon menor e o transverso em um caso (2,08%) e a transição do cólon maior para o cólon transverso em um caso (2,08%). A sobrevida em curto prazo foi de 77,08%, em geral, e de 87,50% quando contabilizados apenas os pacientes submetidos ao tratamento pós-operatório. Os dados de sobrevivência são consistentes com as taxas de sobrevivência de 91% relatadas na literatura.

ABSTRACT This retrospective study was based on data extracted from medical records of 48 horses with intestinal obstruction caused by enteroliths and/or foreign bodies seen over the course of 17 years. Data analysis was aimed at describing the major features of this type of colic. Obstructions caused by enteroliths, foreign bodies or both accounted for 40 (83.34%), 6 (12.50%) and 2 (4.16%) cases in this sample respectively. Affected horses were aged 1 to 32 years (mean age 9.5 years) and 14 horses were fed alfalfa. Alfalfa is thought to contribute to enterolith formation. Foreign bodies and enteroliths were found in the transverse (12 cases, 25%), the large or the small colon (10 cases, 20.83% respectively). Concurrent obstruction of different intestinal segments was also recorded. These involved the small and the large colon in 10 cases (20.83%), the transverse and the large colon in 4 cases (8.33%), the small and the transverse colon in 1 case (2.08%) and the transition from the large to the transverse colon in one case (2.08%). Short term survival was 77.08% overall and 87.50% when only patients submitted to postoperative treatment were accounted for. Survival data are consistent with survival rates of 91% reported in literature.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of sympathectomy on the myocardium in an experimental model. METHODS: The study evaluated three groups of male Wistar rats: control (CT; n=15), left unilateral sympathectomy (UNI; n=15), and bilateral sympathectomy (BIL; n=31). Sympathectomy was performed by injection of absolute alcohol into the space of the spinous process of the C7 vertebra. After 6 weeks, we assessed the chronotropic properties at rest and stress, cardiovascular autonomic modulation, myocardial and peripheral catecholamines, and beta-adrenergic receptors in the myocardium. The treadmill test consisted of an escalated protocol with a velocity increment until the maximal velocity tolerated by the animal was reached. RESULTS: The bilateral group had higher levels of peripheral catecholamines, and consequently, a higher heart rate (HR) and blood pressure levels. This suggests that the activation of a compensatory pathway in this group may have deleterious effects. The BIL group had basal tachycardia immediately before the exercise test and increased tachycardia at peak exercise (p<0.01); the blood pressure had the same pattern (p=0.0365). The variables related to autonomic modulation were not significantly different between groups, with the exception of the high frequency (HF) variable, which showed significant differences in CT vs UNI. There was no significant difference in beta receptor expression between groups. There was a higher concentration of peripheral norepinephrine in the BIL group (p=0.0001), and no significant difference in myocardial norepinephrine (p=0.09). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that an extra cardiac compensatory pathway increases the sympathetic tonus and maintains a higher HR and higher levels of peripheral catecholamines in the procedure groups. The increase in HF activity can be interpreted as an attempt to increase the parasympathetic tonus to balance the greater sympathetic activity.

RESUMO O abortamento na espécie equina é responsável por grandes perdas econômicas e, entre as possíveis causas, está a neosporose, uma enfermidade que nem sempre é investigada como provável diagnóstico. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi relatar um caso de aborto equino aos 129 dias de gestação, resultante da infecção por Neospora spp.. Amostras sanguíneas da égua e do feto abortado foram enviadas para um laboratório especializado. À necrópsia, constatou-se edema gelatinoso e hemorrágico em subcutâneo, fígado ictérico e friável com autólise de alguns órgãos, como baço, rins e glândulas adrenais. Fragmentos dos órgãos coletados na necrópsia foram submetidos à histopatologia e à pesquisa de agentes infecciosos, em que se identificou hepatite e epicardite não purulentas e onfalite purulenta, bem como exame positivo para Neospora spp. pela técnica de reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) convencional e Nested. O soro sanguíneo obtido da égua foi submetido à pesquisa de Neospora spp. pela técnica de imunofluorescência indireta, de herpesvírus por soroneutralização em cultura de células e de Leptospira sp. por PCR, todas com resultados negativos. Dessa forma, é importante considerar a neosporose como diagnóstico diferencial em casos de abortamento e natimortalidade, uma vez que a presença de cães nas propriedades é extremamente comum, representando uma importante fonte de infecção.

ABSTRACT Abortion in the equine species is responsible for major economic losses, and among the possible causes is neosporosis, a disease that is not always investigated as a probable diagnosis. Thus, the objective of this study was to report an abortion at 129 days of gestation resulting from Neospora spp. Blood samples from the mare and the aborted fetus were sent to a specialized laboratory. Under necropsy, gelatinous and hemorrhagic edema was detected in subcutaneous tissue, friable and jaundiced liver with autolysis in spleen, kidneys and adrenal glands. Fragments of the organs collected at necropsy were submitted to histopathology and infectious agent tests, which identified non-purulent hepatitis and epicarditis and purulent omphalitis. Also, a positive result for Neospora spp. by the conventional and nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique. Blood serum obtained from the mare was subjected to analyses to Neospora spp. by indirect immunofluorescence technique, herpesvirus by serum neutralization in cell culture and Leptospira sp. by PCR, all with negative results. Thus, it is important to consider neosporosis as a differential diagnosis in cases of abortion and stillbirth, since the presence of dogs in the properties is extremely common and represent an important source of infection.

RESUMO O milho é a principal fonte de energia nas dietas animais. Em algumas regiões brasileiras, sua disponibilidade, principalmente na entressafra, é insuficiente para atender à demanda, fazendo com que seu preço se eleve. Neste estudo, objetivou-se avaliar a substituição do milho pelo sorgo sobre o desempenho zootécnico e a digestibilidade em coelhos. Foram utilizados 60 animais machos da raça Nova Zelândia Branco, divididos em três tratamentos: ração base milho (TM); ração base sorgo (TS) e ração base 50% de milho + 50% de sorgo (TMS). No ensaio de desempenho, avaliou-se ganho de peso (GP), consumo de ração (CR), conversão alimentar (CA), coeficientes de digestibilidade da matéria seca (CDMS), proteína bruta (CDPB), fibra em detergente neutro (CDFDN) e fibra em detergente ácido (CDFDA). Observou-se que o CRM, a CA e o GPM não foram afetados pela substituição do milho pelo sorgo, nos níveis de 50% e 100%. Os resultados de digestibilidade demonstraram maiores CDPB e CDFDN na ração base milho, não havendo diferenças entre os demais parâmetros estudados. O sorgo com baixo teor de tanino pode ser usado nas rações de crescimento de coelhos em níveis de substituição de 50% ou 100% da participação do milho, sem prejuízos para o desempenho zootécnico e a digestibilidade.

ABSTRACT Corn is the main source of energy in animal diets. In some Brazilian regions, its availability, especially in the off-season, may be insufficient to meet demand, which causes prices to increase. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the substitution of maize by sorghum on the performance and digestibility of rabbits. Sixty New Zealand White bucks were used, divided in three treatments, maize base ration (TM); based on grain sorghum ration (TS) and base ration 50% corn + 50% sorghum grain (TMS). In the performance test, weight gain (GP), feed intake (CR) and feed conversion ratio (CA) were evaluated. In the digestibility assay, 21 animals were used. The total dry matter (CDMS), crude protein (CDPB), gross energy (EB), neutral detergent fiber (CDFDN) and acid detergent fiber (CDFDA) coefficients were evaluated. There was no significant difference for any of the performance parameters studied (P > 0.05). The digestibility results showed higher CDPB and CDFDN in the corn diet (P <0.05), with no differences between the other parameters studied. Low tannin sorghum can be used in rabbit growth diets at substitution levels of 50% or 100% of maize participation without impairing zootechnical performance and digestibility.

RESUMO Enfermidades mamárias em éguas são raras e, normalmente, apenas um animal é afetado. Neste relato, duas éguas, de sete e nove anos, foram diagnosticadas concomitantemente com mastite crônica piogranulomatosa, associada com reação de Splendore - Hoeppli, indicativa de botriomicose, uma doença crônica supurativa rara, com formação de microabscessos caracterizados pela presença de material eosinofílico em torno dos microrganismos ou de material biologicamente inerte. Várias bactérias podem causar botriomicose em cavalos, sendo Staphylococcus sp., particularmente S. aureus, as mais frequentemente isoladas. Este relato confirma o papel do Staphylococcus sp, no entanto este é o primeiro relato em que S. hyicus e S. cohnii foram identificados em lesões relacionadas à botriomicose.

ABSTRACT Mammary disorders in mares are rare and usually only one animal per paddock is affected. In this report, two mares with 7 and 9 years old, were concomitantly diagnosis of chronic pyogranulomatous mastitis, associated with the Splendore-Hoeppli reaction, indicative of botryomycosis a rare, chronic suppurative disease with microabscess formation, characterized by in vivo formation of eosinophilic materials around microorganisms or biologically inert material. Various bacteria can cause botryomycosis in horses, and the most frequently isolated one is Staphylococcus sp., particularly S. aureus. This report confirms the role of Staphylococcus sp.; however, specifically S. hyicus and S. cohnii that prior to the current report, had not been associated with cases of botryomycosis.

RESUMO Objetivou-se estimar as exigências energéticas de borregas mestiças confinadas, alimentadas com níveis crescentes de concentrado na dieta. Foram avaliadas 36 borregas, com peso corporal inicial de 23,7±3,67kg. Seis animais foram abatidos no início do experimento para obtenção dos valores do grupo referência. Os demais (30 animais) foram distribuídos em cinco tratamentos: mantença (alimentação restrita com feno de capim Tifton) e suplementados com níveis crescentes de concentrado (20, 40, 60 e 80%) em base de matéria seca (seis animais por tratamento). As borregas foram abatidas quando atingiram 37,70±9,89kg. Os níveis de concentrado influenciaram a eficiência de utilização da energia metabolizável para mantença (km) e consequentemente as exigências diárias de energia metabolizável para mantença. A exigência de energia líquida para mantença de borregas mestiças em crescimento é 57 kcal/PCJ0,75/dia, em que PCJ é o peso corporal em jejum. As borregas com 20kg apresentaram exigência de energia líquida para 100g de ganho de peso diário de 465kcal/dia. As borregas com 40kg de peso corporal exigiram 930kcal/dia de energia líquida para o mesmo ganho. A exigência líquida para mantença de borregas pode ser estimada pela equação: ELm (Mcal/dia) = 0,057* PCJ0,75. A exigência líquida de energia para ganho de borregas mestiças (Mcal/dia) pode ser estimada a partir da equação: ELg = 0,524 x PVJ0,75 x GPCVZ1,21, em que GPCVZ é o ganho de peso do corpo vazio. As dietas influenciam as eficiências de usos da energia metabolizável para mantença (km) e ganho (kg).

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate the energy requirements of crossbreed ewe lambs in a feedlot fed with increasing levels of concentrate in the diet. 36 ewe lambs were evaluated with initial body weight of 23.7±3.67kg. Six animals were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment to obtain the reference group values. Animals (30) were distributed in five treatments: maintenance (feed restricted with Tifton grass hay) and those supplemented with increasing dietary levels of concentrate (20, 40, 60 and 80%) on a dry matter basis (six animals per treatment). The ewe lambs were slaughtered when they reached 37.70±9.89kg. The concentrate levels influenced the utilization efficiency of metabolizable energy for maintenance (km) and consequently the daily requirements of metabolizable energy for maintenance. The net energy requirements for maintenance of crossbred lambs in growth is 57kcal/FCW 0.75/day, where FCW is body weight on fasting. The ewe lambs with 20kg presented net energy requirement for 100g daily weight gain of 465kcal/day. The ewe lambs with 40kg of body weight required 930 kcal/day of net energy for the same gain. The net energy requirement for maintenance of ewe lambs can be estimated by the equation: NEm (Mcal/day) = 0.057 * FCW0.75. The net energy requirement for crossbred ewe lambs gain (Mcal/day) can be estimated from the equation: NEg (Mcal/day) = 0.524*FCW 0.75*GEBW1.21, where GEBW represented gain empty body weight. Diets affect the efficiencies of uses of metabolizable energy for maintenance (km) and gain (kg).

Condrossarcoma mesenquimal extraesquelético (CME) é um neoplasma maligno e raro em animais domésticos. Descreve-se um caso de CME em uma gata que apresentava uma massa firme, branco-amarelada, medindo 18cm de diâmetro, aderida à musculatura do membro pélvico esquerdo. O exame citológico revelou presença de células fusiformes individualizadas pleomórficas e agregados de pequenas células ovais, sem bordas definidas em meio à matriz intercelular amorfa. Devido à impossibilidade de tratamento e ao prognóstico desfavorável, foi realizada eutanásia. Microscopicamente foram observadas células fusiformes indiferenciadas e agregados de células condroides pleomórficas. O diagnóstico de CME foi confirmado pelas técnicas de azul alciano, tricrômico de Masson e pela prova imunoistoquímica, utilizando-se anticorpos antivimentina.

Extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (EMC) is a rare malignant tumor in domestic animals. We described a case of EMC in a cat with a mass measuring 18cm in diameter, yellowish-white and firm attached to the muscles in left hind limb. Cytological examination revealed the presence of individual pleomorphic spindle cells and clusters of small oval cells with no hard edges in the midst of an amorphous intercellular matrix. Due to the impossibility of treatment and poor prognosis, the cat was euthanized. Microscopically undifferentiated spindle cells and clusters of pleomorphic chondroid cells were observed. The CME diagnosis was confirmed with thealcian blue, Masson's trichrome and immunohistochemistry techniques, using antivimentin antibodies.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo relatar a ocorrência e controle de infecção parasitária por Chilodonella spp. em alevinos de peixe-rei (O. bonariensis). A Chilodonella spp. é um ciliado que parasita tegumento e brânquias de peixes, podendo ocasionar grande mortalidade. A infecção foi identificada a partir da observação comportamental de alevinos criados em caixas de polietileno com capacidade de 1000 litros, mantidas em circuito fechado com um biofiltro e alimentados com ração e zooplancton selvagem. A contaminação foi constatada devido à redução do apetite, perda do equilíbrio e alteração na coloração dos peixes, tendo como causa provável, a elevação dos níveis de amônia não ionizável, levando a uma diminuição da imunidade. Como tratamento foi utilizado uma concentração salina de 10g/L, durante 30 minutos, com êxito para o controle deste parasito.

Avaliou-se o efeito da solução concentrada de albumina eqüina diluída a 5% em solução fisiológica (SF) durante fluidoterapia em eqüinos, após indução de desidratação leve a moderada, utilizando-se cinco eqüinos adultos, sem alterações clínicas. Cada animal passou por dois protocolos de fluidoterapia: apenas com SF (metade sob pressão e metade em fluxo contínuo - grupo-controle); com solução de albumina eqüina e SF (apenas em fluxo contínuo - grupo experimental). Avaliaram-se peso, exame físico geral, hematócrito, osmolalidade plasmática, gasometria, proteína total, albumina, uréia, creatinina, Na, K, débito cardíaco e pressão arterial, e calcularam-se pressão oncótica e volume plasmático. Após a aplicação de metade da SF sob pressão nos animais do grupo-controle, as alterações no hematócrito, na proteína total, na albumina, na pressão arterial e na pressão oncótica foram semelhantes às encontradas nos do grupo experimental após aplicação apenas da solução de albumina. Conclui-se que a solução de albumina eqüina é de fácil preparação e aplicação, não demonstra efeitos deletérios na dose e velocidade utilizadas e é passível de ser utilizada como colóide na fluidoterapia na espécie eqüina.

The effect of the equine concentrated albumin solution diluted to 5% in physiologic saline solution (PSS) during fluid therapy in horses after induced slight to moderate dehydration was evaluated in five adult horses with no clinical alterations. Each animal was submitted to two fluid therapy protocols; with only PSS (half of the total volume under pressure and half in continuous flow - control-group), or with equine albumin solution and PSS (only in continuous flow - treated-group). Body weight; general physical examination, packed cell volume (PCV); plasmatic osmometry; gasometry, total protein, albumin, urea, creatinin, Na, and K, cardiac output; and arterial pressure; and calculation of the oncotic pressure and plasmatic volume were evaluated. After the administration of the first half of PSS under pressure in control group, it was observed that alterations in PCV, total protein, albumin, arterial pressure, and oncotic pressure were similar to those found in experimental group after the administration of the albumin solution. It was concluded that the equine albumin solution is easily prepared and administered, with no deleterial effects in the employed dose and speed, and it is suitable for use as a colloid in fluid therapy in equine species.

OBJETIVO: Validar a Escala de Estigma na Epilepsia (EEE). MÉTODO: A EEE foi aplicada em 40 pacientes adultos com o diagnóstico de Epilepsia do Ambulatório de Epilepsia do HC/Unicamp e em 40 pessoas da comunidade em geral. Os sujeitos foram entrevistados individualmente pelas psicólogas, que foram lendo as questões e anotando as respostas na escala. As condições de aplicação foram as mesmas e a aplicação durou cerca de 10 minutos. RESULTADOS: A EEE possui 24 itens. A consistência interna da EEE mostrou alfa de Cronbach, de 0,88 para os pacientes com epilepsia e 0,81 para a comunidade. As médias do valor geral de estigma obtido com a fórmula da EEE foram: 46 (DP=18,22) para os pacientes e 49 (DP=13,25) para a comunidade. DISCUSSÃO: A EEE possui uma satisfatória validade e alta consistência interna. Isso permite uma quantificação da percepção de estigma da epilepsia na comunidade em geral, que pode ser utilizada para estudos interventivos, como campanhas na mídia, para minimizar as facetas negativas do estigma na sociedade.

PURPOSE: To validate a Stigma Scale of Epilepsy (SSE). METHODS: The SSE was completed by 40 adult with epilepsy attending an Outpatient Epilepsy Clinic at the University Hospital of UNICAMP, and by 40 people from the community. People were interviewed on an individual basis; a psychologist read the questions to the subjects who wrote the answers in a sheet. The procedure was the same for all the subjects and completion took around ten minutes. RESULTS: The SSE has 24 items. The internal consistency of the SSE showed alpha Cronbach’s coefficient 0.88 for the patients with epilepsy and 0.81 for the community. The overall mean scores of the Stigma Scale of Epilepsy formula were: 46 (SD=18.22) for patients and 49 (SD=13.25) for the community where a score of 0 would suggest no stigma, and 100 maximum stigma. DISCUSSION: The SSE has satisfactory content validity and high internal consistency. It allows the quantification of the perception of stigma by patients and people from community; this can then be used for interventional studies, such as mass media campaign in minimizing the negative facets of stigma.

INTRODUÇÃO: O estigma tem sido projetado como um dos problemas sociais mais comuns enfrentados por pessoas com epilepsia. OBJETIVO: Este estudo representa o segundo passo no desenvolvimento da escala para mensurar estigma na epilepsia. MÉTODO: O questionário foi aplicado em 12 pacientes e 32 familiares, entrevistados no Ambulatório de Epilepsia do Hospital das Clínicas, UNICAMP. RESULTADOS: Os resultados estão agrupados nas três principais áreas: médica, social e pessoal. Médica: os sujeitos mostraram não ter informação suficiente ou adequada sobre epilepsia e crises, o que não aconteceu com relação ao tratamento. Social: o trabalho e as relações sociais apareceram como os aspectos de maior discriminação na epilepsia. Os pacientes também ressaltaram a falta de liberdade e restrição de atividades de lazer como aspectos bastante prejudicados. Área pessoal: todos os sujeitos aparentemente têm os mesmos sentimentos e pensamentos sobre epilepsia e crises epilépticas. CONCLUSÃO: Este estudo analisou os aspectos mais comuns apresentados no questionário para avaliar o estigma na epilepsia na cultura brasileira, os quais serão a base da elaboração da escala de estigma na epilepsia.

RATIONALE: The issue of stigmatization is one of the most common psychosocial problems faced by people with epilepsy. PURPOSE: A second step towards the development of a scale to measure epilepsy stigma. METHOD: We applied a closed questionnaire to 12 patients and 32 relatives from the Epilepsy Outpatient Clinic at the University Hospital of Campinas. RESULTS: The results are grouped in three main domains: medical, social and personal areas. Medical: the subjects did not know exactly what epilepsy is or how it is caused; nonetheless they know how to treat it. Social: the most important areas that people with epilepsy are discriminated are at work and social relationships. Patients also complained about their lack of freedom and limits on recreation activities. Personal Area: subjects apparently have the same feelings and thoughts about epilepsy and seizures. CONCLUSION: This study analyzed the most common aspects presented in the questionnaire to assess epilepsy stigma for the Brazilian culture which are the base to the elaboration of a stigma scale of epilepsy.

Determinaram-se as características eletrocardiográficas de amplitude, duração, ritmo e eixo cardíaco no plano frontal de potros, sobreanos e éguas prenhes clinicamente normais, da raça Puro Sangue Inglês. Estudaram-se 50 potros e 50 sobreanos, machos e fêmeas, e 11 éguas prenhes. Concluiu-se que a freqüência cardíaca diminui com a idade e que nos potros e sobreanos as características apresentaram valores intermediários entre os valores padrão de neonatos e adultos. Nos sobreanos eles estão mais próximos dos de referência para adultos. Nas éguas em gestação a única diferença observada com o padrão foi o leve desvio para a direita do eixo cardíaco.

The determination of the electrocardiographic parameters of amplitude, duration, rhythm and electrical axis in the frontal plane from clinically healthy Thoroughbred foals, yearlings and pregnant mares was performed. Fifty foals and 50 yearlings, males and females, and 11 pregnant mares were used. It was concluded that the heart rate decreases with age and that foals and yearlings had intermediate values between reference values of neonates and adults. In yearlings, these values were more similar to the reference values of adults. In pregnant mares, the only difference observed when compared to reference values was the slight right displacement of the electrical axis.

Avaliaram-se pela gastroscopia 21 eqüinos adultos sem manifestações clínicas. A prevalência de úlceras gástricas foi alta, 47,6%, principalmente ao longo do margo plicatus, embora de baixa gravidade. Gastrite leve ou moderada da mucosa glandular constituiu um achado comum em eqüinos adultos assintomáticos submetidos a jejum para exame gastroscópico. A ocorrência de Habronema sp. foi alta, 28,6%, o que resultou em gastrite catarral crônica.

Twenty one adult horses without clinical signs were used for gastroscopic study. High prevalence (47.6%) of gastric ulceration was observed, especially adjacent to the margo plicatus, although with low severity. Mild or moderate gastritis of the glandular mucosa was an usual finding in these horses submited to fasting for gastroscopic examination. The occurrence of Habronema sp. was high (28.6%), and caused chronic catarrhal gastritis.
