The relationship of mandibular condyle dimensions and its association with unilateral posterior crossbite (UPXB) has been suggested in the literature. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate mandibular condyles on the left and right sides and between crossed and non-crossed sides in the sagittal and coronal planes, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Twenty CBCT images of 40 temporo mandibular joints (TMJs) in individuals in mixed dentition phase, which included 9 males (mean 7.9 years) and 11 females (mean 8.2 years), with unilateral posterior crossbite without premature contacts and functional mandibular shifts and with transverse maxillary deficiency. The criteria for sample exclusion included the presence of painful symptoms, facial trauma history, systemic diseases such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, mouth opening limitation (< 40 mm), congenital or genetic anomalies, and skeletal asymmetries that may result in TMJ disorders. Dimensional measurements of the condyles between the right and left sides and crossed and non-crossed sides in sagittal and coronal view were made. There was no significant difference between the measurements of the crossed and non-crossed sides in both sagittal and coronal view. These findings suggest that the presence of unilateral posterior crossbite in children with UPXB did not result in changes between the mandibular condyles in the right and left sides or between the crossed and non-crossed sides in the coronal or sagittal plane.

INTRODUÇÃO: a análise de Moyers é amplamente adotada para a análise da dentição mista, porém, recentemente, a acurácia das suas tabelas de probabilidade está sendo questionada. OBJETIVO: sabendo-se da importância da análise da dentição mista, na determinação mais precisa possível do espaço necessário para o alinhamento de caninos e pré-molares, o objetivo dessa pesquisa foi avaliar de forma objetiva na literatura este importante passo do diagnóstico ortodôntico. MÉTODOS: foi realizado um levantamento computadorizado de artigos publicados entre os anos de 1990 a setembro de 2011 nas bases de dados PubMed e LILACS, segundo o método descrito no manual Cochrane 5.1.0. RESULTADOS: a estratégia de busca resultou em 629 artigos. Para ser selecionado, o artigo deveria utilizar a análise de Moyers e ter uma amostra superior ou igual a 40 pacientes. Os critérios de exclusão foram: modelos de gesso de pacientes com algum tipo de síndrome ou fissurados, pesquisas cuja proposta era apenas uma revisão da literatura ou apenas relato de um caso clínico, e pesquisas anteriores ao ano de 1990. Para essa revisão sistemática, 19 artigos foram selecionados. CONCLUSÕES: com base na literatura disponível, pode-se concluir que a utilização da análise de Moyers na análise da dentição mista deve ser utilizada de maneira cautelosa, pois, na maioria dos artigos avaliados, 75% não apresentou a acurácia desejada, necessitando de adaptações nos níveis de probabilidade, dependendo da população em estudo.

INTRODUCTION: Moyers analysis is widely used for analyzing mixed dentition, however, the accuracy of its theoretical probability tables has been recently questioned. Taking into consideration the fact the mixed dentition analysis is of paramount importance to precisely determine the space needed for alignment of canines and premolars, this research aimed at objectively assessing in the literature such an important step for orthodontic diagnosis. METHODS: A computerized search involving articles published on PubMed and Lilacs between 1990 and September, 2011 was conducted in accordance with the method described in the Cochrane 5.1.0 handbook. RESULTS: The research resulted in a sample composed of 629 articles. The inclusion criteria were: Articles using the Moyers analysis with a sample greater or equal to 40 patients. Conversely, the exclusion criteria were: Dental casts of patients with syndromes or oral cleft, researches conducted with a literature review, only, or clinical case reports and researches conducted before 1990. For this systematic review, 19 articles were selected. CONCLUSION: Based on the literature available, we can conclude that the Moyers mixed dentition analysis must be carefully used, since the majority of the articles analyzed showed that the probability of 75% was not as accurate as expected, leading to the need of adapting the probability levels depending on the study population.

O presente estudo avaliou a correlação entre expansão transversal e aumento no perímetro do arco dentário superior, após disjunção maxilar, em dezoito pares de modelos de gesso, obtidos antes e depois de aproximadamente cinco meses da disjunção maxilar. Os modelos foram fotocopiados e as variáveis largura intermolares, largura intercaninos, comprimento e perímetro do arco dentário superior foram mensuradas por meio de paquímetro digital. Depois de verificado o erro do método, um modelo de regressão múltipla foi desenvolvido em seqüência à identificação do melhor conjunto de variáveis. A equação resultante permitiu concluir que o aumento no perímetro do arco é dado pela adição de 0,54 vezes a alteração intercaninos e de 0,87 vezes a alteração no comprimento do arco.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the correlation between transverse expansion and the increase in upper arch perimeter, after maxillary expansion. Dental casts of eighteen patients were obtained before treatment and again five months after maxillary expansion. Measurements of intermolar width, intercanine width, arch length and arch perimeter were made with a digital caliper on photocopies taken from the dental casts. After assessment of the method error, a multiple regression model was developed following the identification of the best subset of variables. The resulting equation led to the conclusion that the increase in arch perimeter is approximately given by the addition of 0.54 times the intercanine expansion, and 0.87 times the arch length alteration.

O presente estudo avaliou os deslocamentos condilares entre a máxima intercuspidação habitual (MIH) inicial e a relação central (RC), registrada após o uso de placa oclusal desprogramadora por período médio de 7,8 ± 2,1 meses antes do tratamento ortodôntico. A amostra consistiu de 22 indivíduos, 11 do gênero masculino e 11 do feminino, com média de idade de 14,2 ± 1,4 anos, com maloclusão de Classe II², sem sinais e sintomas aparentes de disfunção temporomandibular (DTM). Os deslocamentos condilares foram medidos com aproximação de décimos de milímetro, por meio do indicador de posição axial Panadent. As médias originais dos deslocamentos verticais dos lados direito e esquerdo e correspondentes desvios padrões mediram 4,24 ± 2,53 e 3,86 ± 2,72 mm, respectivamente. Devido à correlação negativa significante observada entre esses deslocamentos e os fatores relativos à idade da amostra, os mesmos foram corrigidos estatisticamente para 2,74 ± 2,00 e 2,44 ± 1,93 mm. No plano horizontal, os deslocamentos médios foram de -0,72 ± 1,53 mm no lado direito e -0,51 ± 1,98 no esquerdo. A média no plano transversal foi de 0,03 ± 0,87 mm. A comparação destes valores com aqueles observados em grupos não desprogramados e publicados na literatura indica que o uso das referidas placas resulta em deslocamentos condilares médios maiores, especialmente no sentido vertical, entre as posições de RC e de MIH, o que contribuiu para um diagnóstico ortodôntico mais preciso.

The present study assessed condylar displacement between initial maximal habitual intercuspation (MHI) and centric relation (CR), recorded after using a deprogramming occlusal splint for an average period of 7.8 ± 2.1 months prior to any orthodontic treatment. The sample consisted of 22 subjects, 11 male and 11 female, with an average age of 14.2 ± 1.4 years, with Class II malocclusion² and with no apparent signs or symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Condylar displacement was measured using a Panadent axis position indicator in decimal fractions of a millimeter. The original mean vertical displacements and the corresponding standard deviations were 4.24 ± 2.53 mm and 3.86 ± 2.72 mm, respectively, for the right and left sides. Because a significant negative correlation was observed between original condylar displacements and age factors, the displacement values were statistically adjusted to 2.74 ± 2.00 mm and 2.44 ± 1.93 mm. On the horizontal plane, the mean displacements measured were -0.72 ± 1.53 mm on the right side and -0.51 ± 1.98 mm on the left. The mean displacement on the transversal plane was 0.03 ± 0.87 mm. A comparison between these values and those observed in non-deprogrammed groups, as well as those published in the related literature, indicates that use of occlusal splints results in greater mean condylar displacement values, especially vertically, between CR and MHI positions, which contributed to a more accurate orthodontic diagnosis.
