Abstract In this study, green high-density polyethylene (GHDPE) composites with 5, 10 and 15% natural powdered cork (CP) with and without 5% maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA) were developed in order to evaluate the potential of these materials for civil construction applications. The composites were produced in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder and injection molded. An impedance tube was used to determine the acoustic behavior of the composites, which were then used as ceiling tiles in prototypes of provisional constructions in order to study ascertain their performance with respect to thermal comfort in the City of Teresina, PI - Brazil. Our data indicates that composites sound absorption coefficient values are good between 500 and 1200 Hz, especially for those with a higher percentage of cork, with the lowest absorption rate observed for composites containing PE-g-MA. The composites used in the prototypes provided a decrease in the internal temperature of the built structure.

Resumen: Objetivo: Evaluar las características de las hospitalizaciones de recién nacidos en una unidad de cuidados intensivos neonatales en el extremo sur de Brasil durante un corto período de tiempo. Método: Estudio observacional, con 85 neonatos, con base en datos secundarios de pacientes hospitalizados en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatales, de mayo de 2020 a octubre de 2020. Resultados: La prevalencia de hospitalizaciones fue del sexo masculino, con diagnóstico de prematuridad, que pesaron entre 1500 g y 2499 g, no recibió leche materna en la primera hora de vida, recibió visitas de los padres, regazo y leche materna durante la hospitalización. Las madres tuvieron más de 6 consultas prenatales y los bebés nacieron por cesárea. Conclusión: La atención brindada de forma holística, basada en la ciencia y de forma humanizada a los recién nacidos y a los padres, puede reducir la mortalidad infantil, brindar mayor seguridad a los padres y confianza en el equipo de atención, además de prevenir futuras complicaciones en el desarrollo del niño.

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of hospitalizations of newborns in a neonatal intensive care unit in the extreme south of Brazil during a short period of time. Method: Observational study, with 85 neonates, based on secondary data from patients hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, from May 2020 to October 2020. Results: The prevalence of hospitalizations was male, with a diagnosis of prematurity, who weighed between 1500g and 2499 g, did not receive breast milk in the first hour of life, received visits from parents, lap and breast milk during hospitalization. The mothers had more than 6 prenatal consultations and the babies were born by cesarean section. Conclusion: The care provided in a holistic way, based on science and in a humanized way to newborns and parents, can reduce infant mortality, bring greater security to parents and confidence in the care team, in addition to preventing future complications in child development.

Resumo: Objetivo: Avaliar as características das internações de recém-nascidos em uma unidade de terapia intensiva neonatal do extremo sul do Brasil durante um curto período de tempo. Método: Estudo observacional, com 85 neonatos, por dados secundários de pacientes internados na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal, nos meses de maio de 2020 a outubro de 2020. Resultados: A prevalência das internações foi do sexo masculino, com diagnóstico de prematuridade, que pesavam entre 1500g e 2499g, não receberam leite materno na primeira hora de vida, receberam visitas dos pais, colo e leite materno durante a internação. As mães tinham mais de 6 consultas de pré-natal e os bebês nasceram de cesárea. Conclusão: O atendimento prestado de forma holística, baseado na ciência e maneira humanizada aos recém-nascidos e aos pais, pode reduzir a mortalidade infantil, trazer maior segurança aos pais e confiança na equipe assistencial, além de evitar complicações futuras no desenvolvimento infantil.

Abstract Aim: The aims of the present study were to verify the self-perception level of the chronotype of amateur street runners and to test the association between the chronotype, gender, age, and preferred training time. Methods: A total of 166 amateur street runners were included (♀ = 89, age 38.9 ± 11.2 years; ♂ = 77, age 38.0 ± 9.7 years). The Brazilian version of the Horne & östberg questionnaire was used to assess chronotypes and the preferred training time was determined through a multiple choice question. Based on chronotype definitions that suggest that when free to choose, morning-types (MT) would prefer training in the morning, evening-types (ET) in the evening and neither-types (NT) would not have a predilection for any specific time. The corroboration of this hypothesis was assumed as self-perception level of the chronotypes. Results: Women showed higher self-perception levels of their chronotype compared to men (58.4% vs. 41.6%; χ2 = 4.699; p = 0.030). By chronotypes, MT, NT, and ET self-perception levels were 73.9%, 15.9%, 88.9%, respectively (χ2 = 57.489; p < 0.001). The most observed women circadian typology was MT, while in men it was NT (χ2 = 8.951; p = 0.011). However, there was no significant association between gender and preferred training time (χ2 = 2.654; p = 0.265). Age, female gender and preference to exercise during the day are associated with MT. Conclusion: Women runners showed a greater perception of their circadian traits than men, despite there was no association between gender and preferred training time.

RESUMO: Frutas nativas são economicamente importantes para pequenos produtores, e são uma parte importante da dieta de várias comunidades. Portanto, estudos pós-colheita desses frutos são essenciais. Além disso, pesquisas envolvendo sua composição química podem identificar substâncias que agregam valor potencial às frutas, principalmente do ponto de vista nutricional e medicinal. Este estudo caracterizou os frutos do arbusto muricizeiro (Byrsonima crassifolia, Malpighiaceae), que foram colhidos de plantas nativas em propriedades particulares e armazenados por 16 dias em temperatura média de 12 °C. Os frutos foram avaliados durante o armazenamento em vista da: atividade de eliminação de radicais 2,2-difenil-1-picril-hidrazil (DPPH), conteúdo de ácido ascórbico, fenólicos e carotenoides totais, perfil de carotenoides, conteúdo de glicose, frutose e sacarose. No geral, a temperatura em que os frutos foram armazenados foi eficaz para manter a qualidade do fruto. No entanto, o teor de ácido ascórbico dos frutos diminuiu durante o período de armazenamento. Os resultados mostraram que os frutos apresentaram alta capacidade antioxidante, possivelmente pela presença de compostos fenólicos e carotenoides. Também é importante destacar que esta fruta é fonte de vitamina A, devido à alta concentração de β-caroteno.

ABSTRACT: Native fruits are economically important to small producers, and they are a important part of the diet of several communities. Therefore, postharvest studies of these fruits are essential. In addition, research involving their chemical composition can identify substances that add potential value to the fruits, especially from a nutritional and medicinal standpoint. This study characterized the fruits of the muricizeiro shrub (Byrsonima crassifolia, Malpighiaceae), which were harvested from native plants on private properties and stored for 16 days at a mean temperature of 12 °C. The fruits were evaluated during storage for: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, ascorbic acid content, phenolics and carotenoids total, carotenoids profile, glucose, fructose and sucrose contents. Overall, the temperature that the fruits were storage at was effective at maintaining the quality of the fruit. However, the ascorbic acid content of the fruits did decrease during the storage period. Results showed that the fruits had a high antioxidant capacity, possibly because of the presence of phenolic compounds and carotenoids. It is also important to highlight that this fruit is source of vitamin A, owing to the high concentration of β-carotene.

RESUMO O objetivo do estudo foi classificar as revistas A1, área 21, de acordo com as taxas envolvidas no processo de publicação. Os periódicos foram selecionados a partir da área Educação Física, quadriênio 2013-2016. A busca foi realizada em Abril de 2019. As informações referentes ao custeio incluíram taxas de submissão, processamento e/ou tramitação, publicação e cobranças adicionais. As despesas com o acesso aberto também foram atribuídas aos autores. Os periódicos foram classificados dos mais baratos para os mais caros. Em caso de igualdade nos valores cobrados, utilizou-se o fator de impacto como critério de desempate, seguindo a ordem decrescente para esse índice. Dos 235 periódicos, somente 8 apresentaram gratuidade no processo. Considerando o cenário de financiamentos limitados para pesquisa tais achados poderiam impactar na produtividade científica nacional.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to classify the A1 journals of area 21 according to the rates involved in the publication process. The journals were selected from the Physical Education evaluation area, quadrennium 2013-2016. The search was conducted in April 2019. Costing information included submission, processing, publication and additional fees. Open access expenditure has also been allocated. The journals have been ranked from the cheapest to the most expensive. Only 8 of 235 journals presented gratuity in the process. Considering the scenario of limited research funding, such findings could impact on national scientific productivity.

RESUMEN El objetivo del estudio fue clasificar las revistas A1, área 21, de acuerdo con las tasas involucradas en el proceso de publicación. Las revistas fueron seleccionadas del área de Educación Física, cuatrienio 2013-2016. La búsqueda se realizó en abril de 2019. La información de costos incluyó el envío, el procesamiento y / o las tarifas de procesamiento, la publicación y los cargos adicionales. Los gastos con acceso abierto también se atribuyeron al autor. Las revistas se clasificaron del más barato al más caro. En caso de igualdad en las cantidades cobradas, el factor de impacto se consideró el desempate, siguiendo el orden descendente de este índice. De las 235 revistas, solo 8 se presentaron de forma gratuita en el proceso. Considerando el escenario de financiamiento limitado para la investigación, tales hallazgos podrían afectar la productividad científica nacional.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho é analisar as contribuições de Celso Furtado quanto ao papel da política cambial e sua relação com o conflito de classes no desenvolvimento de economias periféricas. Resgatam-se as interpretações do autor em suas análises sobre o caso venezuelano e em Formação Econômica do Brasil. Nessas obras destacam-se duas principais conclusões: i) a valorização cambial, em consequência da maldição dos recursos naturais, prejudica o crescimento econômico; ii) a condução da política cambial é um fenômeno associado à economia política, em que o conflito de classes torna-se eminente. A conclusão ressalta a atualidade do pensamento do autor.

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to analyze the contributions of Celso Furtado regarding the role of exchange rate policy and its relation to social conflict in the economic growth of peripheral economies. For that, we revisit Furtado’s analyses about the Venezuelan case and in The Economic Formation of Brazil. We highlight two main conclusions from such works: i) exchange rate appreciation due to a natural resources curse harms economic growth; ii) exchange rate policy is mainly a phenomenon associated with political economy, in which social conflict emerges. Hence, we claim that Furtado’s analyses are still significant today.

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal cancer is one of the most frequent types of malignant neoplasms. Age is a risk factor for this disease, with 75% of cases diagnosed in patients older than 65 years. Complications such as obstruction, hemorrhage, and perforation are present in more than one-third of cases and require emergency treatment. We aim to analyze the profile of elderly patients undergoing surgery for complicated colorectal cancer, and to evaluate factors related to worse short-term prognosis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent emergency surgical treatment for complicated colorectal cancer was performed. Demographics, clinical, radiological and histological data were collected. RESULTS: Sixty-seven patients were analyzed. The median age was 72 years, and almost half (46%) of the patients were female. Obstruction was the most prevalent complication at initial presentation (72%). The most common sites of neoplasia were the left and sigmoid colon in 22 patients (32.8%), and the right colon in 17 patients (25.4%). Resection was performed in 88% of cases, followed by primary anastomosis in almost half. The most frequent clinical stages were II (48%) and III (22%). Forty-three patients (65.7%) had some form of postoperative complication. Clavien-Dindo grades 1, 2, and 4, were the most frequent. Complete oncologic resection was observed in 80% of the cases. The thirty-day mortality rate was 10.4%. Advanced age was associated with worse morbidity and mortality. CONCLUSION: Elderly patients with complicated colorectal cancer undergoing emergency surgery have high morbidity and mortality rates. Advanced age is significantly associated with worse outcomes.

RESUMO Os avanços significativos ocorridos desde o III Consenso Brasileiro sobre H. pylori realizado em 2012, em Bento Gonçalves, justificam este quarto consenso. O evento foi organizado pelo Núcleo Brasileiro para Estudo do Helicobacter e Microbiota, associação vinculada à Federação Brasileira de Gastroenterologia, tendo sido realizado novamente em Bento Gonçalves, RS, nos dias 25 a 27 de agosto de 2017. Participaram 26 delegados provenientes das cinco regiões brasileiras incluindo gastroenterologistas, endoscopistas e patologistas, além de um convidado internacional (EUA). Os participantes foram convidados pelo conhecimento e contribuição ao estudo da infecção por H. pylori. O encontro buscou rever diferentes aspectos relacionados ao tratamento da infecção, suas inter-relações com a dispepsia, microbiota e outras afecções, com ênfase especial ao câncer gástrico, além de promover uma reavaliação dos aspectos epidemiológicos e diagnósticos desta infecção. Os participantes foram alocados em quatro grupos, a saber: 1) Epidemiologia e diagnóstico, 2) Dispepsia, microbiota e outras afecções, 3) Neoplasias gástricas, e 4) Tratamento. Previamente à reunião do Consenso, os participantes receberam um tema a ser discutido e elaboraram texto com uma revisão recente da literatura, contendo uma assertiva de sua revisão. Todas as assertivas foram avaliadas em dois turnos de votação. Inicialmente, cada participante apresentava sua compilação e assertiva ao seu grupo, para eventuais modificações e votação. Posteriormente, em uma segunda votação, agora em sessão plenária, as assertivas eram novamente votadas e eventualmente modificadas. As votações obedeceram a cinco alternativas: 1) concorda fortemente; 2) concorda com reservas; 3) indeciso; 4) discorda e; 5) discorda fortemente. O índice de consenso adotado para cada afirmativa foi de 80% dos votantes respondendo que concorda fortemente ou concorda com reservas. As recomendações aqui apresentadas foram baseadas nas evidências científicas mais relevantes para o manuseio da infecção por H. pylori na população adulta no Brasil.

ABSTRACT Significant progress has been obtained since the III Brazilian Consensus Conference on H. pylori infection held in 2012, in Bento Gonçalves, Brazil, and justify a fourth meeting to establish updated guidelines on the current management of H. pylori infection. Therefore, the Núcleo Brasileiro para Estudo do Helicobacter pylori e Microbiota (NBEHPM), association linked to Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology (FBG) held its fourth meeting again in Bento Gonçalves, RS, Brazil, on August 25-27, 2017. Twenty-six delegates, including gastroenterologists, endoscopists, and pathologists from the five regions of Brazil as well as one international guest from the United States, participated in the meeting. The participants were invited based on their knowledge and contribution to the study of H. pylori infection. The meeting sought to review different aspects of treatment for infection; establish a correlation between infection, dyspepsia, intestinal microbiota changes, and other disorders with a special emphasis on gastric cancer; and reassess the epidemiological and diagnostic aspects of H. pylori infection. Participants were allocated into four groups as follows: 1) Epidemiology and Diagnosis, 2) Dyspepsia, intestinal microbiota and other afections, 3) Gastric Cancer, and, 4) Treatment. Before the consensus meeting, participants received a topic to be discussed and prepared a document containing a recent literature review and statements that should be discussed and eventually modified during the face-to-face meeting. All statements were evaluated in two rounds of voting. Initially, each participant discussed the document and statements with his group for possible modifications and voting. Subsequently, during a second voting in a plenary session in the presence of all participants, the statements were voted upon and eventually modified. The participants could vote using five alternatives: 1) strongly agree; 2) partially agree; 3) undecided; 4) disagree; and 5) strongly disagree. The adopted consensus index was that 80% of the participants responded that they strongly or partially agreed with each statement. The recommendations reported are intended to provide the most current and relevant evidences to management of H. pylori infection in adult population in Brazil.

Resumo O processo revolucionário na Rússia foi acompanhado de intensa fermentação artística. Entre os diversos movimentos surgidos, os mais importantes foram: produtivismo, futurismo e proletkult. Todos eles disputavam a bênção do jovem Estado soviético. Este, contudo, em seus primeiros anos de vida, não concedeu a nenhum deles o monopólio de representação no campo das artes. Tal atitude explica-se, em grande parte, pela visão de seus principais dirigentes, Lenin e Trótski. Com a ascensão do stalinismo, foi imposta uma política cultural monolítica que consagrou como a estética oficial do regime o realismo socialista.

Abstract The revolutionary process in Russia was accompanied by intense artistic ferment. Among the several movements that emerged, the most important were Productivism, Futurism and Proletkult. They all sought blessing of the young Soviet State, which, however, in its first years, did not grant to any of them the monopoly of representation in the arts. This attitude is largely explained by the vision of its main leaders, Lenin and Trotsky. With the rise of Stalinism, a monolithic cultural policy was imposed, which established Socialist Realism as the official aesthetics of the regime.

RESUMO: Leishmaniose visceral (LV) é causada pelo protozoário Leishmania infantum . A transmissão deste parasito para hospedeiros é principalmente vetorial. No entanto, rotas alternativas de infecção têm sido investigadas, especialmente em áreas onde o vetor biológico está ausente. O período exato de infecção e se a transmissão in utero ocorre ainda não está totalmente elucidada. Este estudo demonstra uma evidência molecular da transmissão vertical de L. infantum de uma cadela prenhe para o embrião. As amostras (vulva, vagina, cérvix, corpo do útero, corno do útero e ovários) de uma fêmea naturalmente infectada por L. infantum e de seu embrião foram analisados molecularmente por meio de qPCR e cPCR, seguido de sequenciamento de DNA. A estimativa da idade gestacional foi de 23±1 dia. Na qPCR, a presença de DNA de L. infantum foi detectado em todas as amostras (n=7) analisadas, incluindo o embrião. No entanto, na PCR convencional, apenas quatro amostras (vagina, cérvix, corpo do útero e embrião) foram positivas. Este estudo demonstrou que a transmissão de L. infantum de uma cadela prenhe para o embrião pode ocorrer nos primeiros dias de prenhez. Em conclusão, de acordo com o conhecimento dos autores, este é o primeiro relatório evidenciando infecção de embrião canino por L. infantum.

ABSTRACT: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by the protozoon Leishmania infantum . Transmission of this parasite to hosts occurs mainly through the bite of infected sand flies. However, alternative infection routes have been hypothesized, especially in areas where the biological vector is absent. The exact time of infection and whether in utero transmission occurs have still not been fully elucidated. This report demonstrates molecular evidence of vertical transmission of L. infantum from a pregnant dog to the embryo. Samples (e.g. vulva, vagina, cervix, uterine body, uterine horn and ovaries) from a female naturally infected by L. infantum and from her embryo were molecularly analyzed by means of qPCR and cPCR followed by DNA sequencing. The gestational age was estimated to be 23±1 day. Through qPCR, the presence of L. infantum DNA was detected in all the samples analyzed (n=7), including the embryo, conversely through cPCR, only four samples (vagina, cervix, uterine body and embryo) were positive. This study demonstrated that transmission of L. infantum from a pregnant dog to the embryo might occur in the early days of pregnancy. In conclusion, this is the first report showing L. infantum infecting a canine embryo.

RESUMO: Considerando a falta de estudos sobre lesões nos órgãos genitais de cadelas naturalmente infectadas por Leishmania infantum , o objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a correlação entre reação inflamatória crônica, imunomarcação e carga parasitária, no sistema genital. Dez animais foram fornecidos pelo Departamento de Controle de Vetores e Vigilância Animal do município de Caruaru, Estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. Fragmentos de vulva, vagina, cérvix, corpo do útero, corno do útero e ovários foram avaliados por descrição histopatológica, imuno-histoquímica (IHQ) e detecção de DNA de formas amastigotas por qPCR. A relação entre IHQ e infiltrado inflamatório crônico relacionado com L. infantum foi observada apenas na vulva e vagina, enquanto as mesmas reações sem imunomarcação foram observadas em todos os órgãos, exceto nos ovários. DNA de L. infantum foi detectado em todos os órgãos do sistema genital, porém, sem diferença de carga parasitária entre eles. Não houve correlação entre a carga parasitária e lesões inflamatórias nos órgãos avaliados, com exceção do corpo do útero, em que foi encontrada uma correlação inversa. Em conclusão, a vulva e a vagina foram os principais locais de lesões e imunomarcação para formas amastigotas L. infantum no sistema genital de cadelas. A carga parasitária não influenciou a intensidade das lesões nos órgãos avaliados.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlations among chronic inflammatory reaction, immunostaining and parasite load in the genital system of female dogs naturally infected with Leishmania infantum . Animals (n = 10) used in this study were from the Department of Vector Control and Animal Surveillance of the municipality of Caruaru, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Fragments of the vulva, vagina, cervix, uterine body, uterine horns and ovaries were submitted to histopathological analysis, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and DNA detection of amastigotes by qPCR. Correlations were found between the IHC findings and chronic inflammatory infiltrate related to L. Infantum only in the vulva and vagina; whereas, the same inflammatory reactions without immunostaining were observed in all organs, except the ovaries. L. Infantum DNA was detected in all organs of genital system, with no difference in parasite load observed among the different organs. No correlation was reported between parasite load and inflammatory lesions in the organs evaluated, except for the uterine body, in which an inverse correlation was detected. In conclusion, the vulva and vagina were the major sites of lesions and immunostaining for L. Infantum amastigotes in the genital system of female dogs. Moreover, parasite load exerted no influence on the intensity of the lesions in the organs evaluated.

resumo Após a Revolução Francesa de 1789 o Estado democrático estabeleceu os direitos universais do cidadão. Os movimentos sociais, inicialmente, encamparam esse ideal universalista e lutaram pelo reconhecimento de seus direitos: as mulheres obtiveram o direito de voto e os negros as leis antirracistas. Num segundo momento, o reconhecimento da igualdade cedeu lugar à luta pelo reconhecimento das diferenças. O texto procura enfocar as "ações afirmativas" implementadas pelo Estado e seus problemáticos resultados.

abstract After the French Revolution of 1789, the democratic State established the universal rights of the citizen. Social movements initially embraced this universalist ideal and fought for the recognition of their rights: women gained the right to vote and blacks obtained anti-racist laws. Later, the recognition of equality gave way to the struggle for the recognition of differences. This text seeks to focus on "affirmative actions" implemented by the State and its problematic outcomes.

RESUMO: A Leishmaniose Visceral Canina é uma importante enfermidade causada pelo protozoário Leishmania infantum que afeta diversos órgãos e sistemas, incluindo o trato genital. No entanto, o tropismo da L. infantum pelo sistema genital masculino e a correlação entre carga parasitária, detecção imunohistoquímica e alterações estruturais nesses órgãos ainda é uma questão controversa. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar essa correlação em órgãos genitais de cães naturalmente infectados por L. infantum. Para tal, amostras de testículos, epidídimos, próstata, glande, prepúcio e escroto foram coletadas de 19 cães adultos positivos. Lesões microscópicas associadas com imunomarcação de formas amastigotas do parasito foram observadas nos testículos (5,2%), epidídimos (2,6%), prepúcio (5,2%) e escroto (5,2%). Por outro lado, alterações estruturais sem imunomarcação foram observadas em todos os órgãos. Além disso, o DNA de L. infantum foi encontrado em todos os órgãos com maior carga parasitária nos testículos, epidídimos e próstata. Curiosamente, os testículos apresentaram a maior carga parasitária, porém apresentaram o menor grau de lesões inflamatórias. Essas lesões inflamatórias foram observadas em todos os órgãos do sistema reprodutor de cães com L. infantum. Entretanto, não houve correlação entre carga parasitária e lesões inflamatórias nestes órgãos.

ABSTRACT: Canine visceral leishmaniasisis an important disease caused by the protozoon Leishmania infantum which affects several organs and systems, including the genital tract. The L. infantum tropism to the male genital system and correlation among parasite load, immunohistochemistry detection and structural changes in these organs is controversy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate this correlation in the genital organs of the male dogs naturally infected with L. infantum. Samples from testicles, epididymis, prostate, glans penis, prepuce and scrotum were collected from 19 positive adult dogs. Structural changes were observed in the testicles (5.2%), epididymis (2.6%), prepuce (5.2%) and scrotum (5.2%) of the samples positive at immunohistochemistry examination. Conversely, similar structural changes were observed in all tissues negative at immunohistochemistry analysis. Moreover, L. infantum DNA was detected in all organs with the highest parasite load found in testicles, epididymis, and prostate gland. , Testicles had the highest parasite load but the lowest number of inflammatory lesions. These inflammatory lesions were observed in all organs of reproductive system of dogs; however, no correlation was observed between the parasite load and inflammatory lesions of dogs naturally infected with L. infantum.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a capacidade de portadores de DPOC em realizar atividades de vida diária (AVD), identificar barreiras que impedem a sua realização, e correlacionar essas barreiras com gravidade da dispneia, teste de caminhada de seis minutos (TC6) e um escore de limitação de AVD. MÉTODOS: Nos pacientes com DPOC e controles saudáveis pareados por idade, o número de passos, a distância percorrida e o tempo de caminhada foram registrados por um acelerômetro tridimensional durante sete dias consecutivos. Um questionário de barreiras percebidas e a escala London Chest Activity of Daily Living (LCADL) foram utilizados para identificar os fatores que impedem a realização de AVD. A dispneia foi medida por duas escalas distintas, e a capacidade física submáxima foi determinada com base no TC6. RESULTADOS: Foram avaliados 40 sujeitos com DPOC e 40 controles. Os pacientes com DPOC, comparados aos controles, realizaram menor tempo de caminhada (68,5 ± 25,8 min/dia vs. 105,2 ± 49,4 min/dia; p < 0,001), menor distância caminhada (3,9 ± 1,9 km/dia vs. 6,4 ± 3,2 km/dia; p < 0,001) e menor número de passos/dia. As principais barreiras referidas para realização de AVD foram falta de estrutura, influência social e falta de vontade. A distância caminhada no TC6 correlacionou-se com os resultados do acelerômetro, mas não os resultados da LCADL. CONCLUSÕES: Portadores de DPOC são menos ativos quando comparados a adultos saudáveis com idade comparável. O sedentarismo e as barreiras para a realização de AVD têm implicações imediatas na prática clínica, exigindo medidas precoces de intervenção.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of COPD patients to perform activities of daily living (ADL); to identify barriers that prevent these individuals from performing ADL; and to correlate those barriers with dyspnea severity, six-minute walk test (6MWT), and an ADL limitation score. METHODS: In COPD patients and healthy, age-matched controls, the number of steps, the distance walked, and walking time were recorded with a triaxial accelerometer, for seven consecutive days. A questionnaire regarding perceived barriers and the London Chest Activity of Daily Living (LCADL) scale were used in order to identify the factors that prevent the performance of ADL. The severity of dyspnea was assessed with two scales, whereas submaximal exercise capacity was determined on the basis of the 6MWT. RESULTS: We evaluated 40 COPD patients and 40 controls. In comparison with the control values, the mean walk time was significantly shorter for COPD patients (68.5 ± 25.8 min/day vs. 105.2 ± 49.4 min/day; p < 0.001), as was the distance walked (3.9 ± 1.9 km/day vs. 6.4 ± 3.2 km/day; p < 0.001). The COPD patients also walked fewer steps/day. The most common self-reported barriers to performing ADL were lack of infrastructure, social influences, and lack of willpower. The 6MWT distance correlated with the results obtained with the accelerometer but not with the LCADL scale results. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with COPD are less active than are healthy adults of a comparable age. Physical inactivity and the barriers to performing ADL have immediate implications for clinical practice, calling for early intervention measures.
