Abstract Environmental factors act at multiple spatial scales in a hierarchical manner to shape the organization of biota. However, the relative influence of different scale-related factors is poorly known, especially in Atlantic Forest Blackwater streams. Therefore, we herein aimed to evaluate local, landscape and spatial factors that shape fish assemblages in 14 blackwater restinga coastal Atlantic Forest streams under natural conditions and verify species occurrence patterns among four sub-basins during the low-precipitation season. When we combined local, landscape and spatial factors, variance partitioning explained a high proportion of variation in species matrix. Local variables pH and Total Dissolved Solids explained most of the variability, and these were the most important factors in determining fish community structure. Significant differences in fish assemblage structure among the four sub-basins were observed, and Mimagoniates microlepis, Phalloceros harpagos, and Hollandichthys multifasciatus were the species that most contributed to this dissimilarity. The important contribution of local predictors, the high number of endemic species herein recorded, the presence of an endangered species (Spintherobolus broccae), and near pristine conditions, may be used as baseline conditions for the assessment of similar environments.

Resumo Fatores ambientais atuam em múltiplas escalas espaciais de forma hierárquica, moldando a organização da biota. Todavia, as influências relativas de fatores relacionados a diferentes escalas são ainda pouco conhecidas, especialmente em riachos de águas pretas da Mata Atlântica. Investigamos como os fatores locais, da paisagem e espaciais, moldam as assembleias de peixes em 14 riachos costeiros de restinga de águas pretas da Mata Atlântica sob condições naturais, verificando os padrões de ocorrência de espécies em quatro sub-bacias durante a estação de baixa precipitação. A partição de variância explicou uma alta proporção de variação na matriz de espécies ao combinar fatores locais, de paisagem e espaciais. As variáveis locais pH e Sólidos Totais Dissolvidos explicaram a maior parte da variabilidade e foram os fatores mais importantes na estruturação da comunidade de peixes. Foram observadas diferenças significativas na estrutura da assembleia de peixes entre as quatro sub-bacias, sendo que Mimagoniates microlepis, Phalloceros harpagos e Hollandichthys multifasciatus foram as espécies que mais contribuíram para essa dissimilaridade. A importante contribuição dos preditores locais, o alto número de espécies endêmicas e a presença de uma espécie ameaçada (Spintherobolus broccae) indicam condições próximas das pristinas dos riachos, podendo estes ser usados como referência para a avaliação de ambientes semelhantes.

Abstract Tropical streams are among the most threatened ecosystems in the world. As such, studies carried out and compiled over spatial and temporal scales can provide useful information to examine patterns of species diversity and threats to their survival. Here we conducted a systematic review of published research on biological and ecological aspects of stream fish fauna found in the Piracicaba-Capivari-Jundiaí Basin, an industrial watershed of São Paulo State. We aimed to detect main patterns, trends and gaps in studies related to species composition, distribution, spatial and temporal scales, as well as in the covered topics. Results were related to main land uses, biomes and Conservation Units. A constant increase in published articles occurred from 2003 until 2016 with an average of 1.8 articles/year. Twenty-six publications were considered for the present study, reporting on fish samples obtained in 67 sites and resulting in 89 species. A high proportion of studies were concentrated in the Corumbataí sub-basin, and rarefaction curves indicated that stream fish richness in the PCJ Basin may be considerably higher than that shown by the actual numbers. Basin studies were unevenly distributed and did do not include such highly preserved areas as the Camanducaia, Jaguari and Jundiaí sub-basins. We emphasize the importance of further surveys in these regions, as well as in high priority conservation areas, which may lead to new insights for developing appropriate conservation strategies for this basin.

Resumo Riachos tropicais estão entre os ecossistemas mais ameaçados do mundo e a compilação de estudos temporais e espaciais pode fornecer informações úteis para examinar padrões de diversidade de espécies e ameaças nesses sistemas. Realizamos uma revisão sistemática das pesquisas publicadas sobre aspectos biológicos e ecológicos da ictiofauna de riachos da bacia do Piracicaba-Capivari-Jundiaí, uma bacia industrial do Estado de São Paulo. O objetivo foi detectar os principais padrões, tendências e lacunas em estudos relacionados à composição, distribuição de espécies, escalas espaciais, temporais e temas abordados. Os resultados foram relacionados aos principais usos do solo, biomas e Unidades de Conservação. Foi verificado um aumento constante de artigos entre 2003 e 2016, com média de 1,8 artigos/ano. Vinte e seis publicações foram consideradas para o estudo, que indicaram 67 locais amostrados, e o registro de 89 espécies. Uma alta proporção deles concentrou-se na sub-bacia de Corumbataí e curvas de rarefação indicaram que a riqueza de peixes de riacho na bacia do PCJ deve ser consideravelmente maior do que os números atuais. A distribuição desigual de estudos na bacia, que não inclui áreas altamente preservadas como as sub-bacias de Camanducaia, Jaguari e Jundiaí, enfatiza a necessidade de se obter mais informações nessas regiões, bem como em áreas de conservação de alta prioridade. Novas abordagens relacionadas a conceitos e teorias ecológicas em estudos futuros poderão fornecer informações que ajudem a desenvolver estratégias de conservação adequadas para esta bacia.

Abstract Ecological and life history traits have been used to understand the basic ecology of fishes. This study aimed to examine the existence of plasticity in life history traits of populations of Hollandichthys multifasciatus in ten blackwater streams. This is an inseminating Characidae, endemic to the Atlantic coastal drainages of Brazil. Different aspects of the life-history of the species, such as mean length, sex ratio, absolute and relative fecundity, gonadosomatic index, condition factor, length-weight relationship and the growth parameter (b) of 185 specimens were studied during the period of low precipitation (June-September). Fish samples were obtained along a 100 m stretch of each stream, and some habitat variables recorded. ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated a similarity in most of the analyzed traits, with exception of the mean length of immatures, Gonadosomatic Index of mature males and condition factor of immatures and mature adults. Also, slope tests of the length-weight relationship were significantly different for immatures. The observed differences were attributed to heterogeneity in food availability and/or other site-specific factors, which may influence growth and/or breeding aspects among the studied localities. The approach used herein may improve understanding of trait plasticity under natural conditions, helping to understand fish-community responses to anthropogenic changes.

RESUMO O objetivo do estudo foi testar se espécies de peixes ocupam diferentes mesohabitats definidos por critérios específicos de tipos de substrato em riachos de águas pretas de Mata Atlântica. Durante a estação de baixa vazão (junho-setembro/2016), foram amostrados quatorze riachos costeiros de águas pretas no litoral de São Paulo, Brasil. Para cada riacho, selecionamos três tipos de mesohabitats (areia, folhiço e troncos) em um trecho de rio de 100 m. Amostramos 41 mesohabitats, dos quais 31 com peixes, resultando em 15 espécies. A análise de variância multivariada (MANOVA) aplicada às variáveis abióticas dos mesohabitats, não indicou diferenças significativas entre estes. A ANOSIM para densidade de espécies e biomassa e as Análises de Redundância (RDAs) para densidade de espécies, biomassa e índices da comunidade indicaram padrões semelhantes da estrutura da comunidade entre mesohabitats. No entanto, a biomassa, a diversidade e a riqueza de peixes estiveram associadas a características ambientais específicas tais como habitats rasos e sombreados. Os resultados sugerem que estas comunidades estejam sujeitas a certo nível de perturbação, o que afeta o valor dos mesohabitats como refúgios. Assim, a utilização dos diferentes mesohabitats entre as espécies pode representar uma estratégia oportunista para maximizar o uso de recursos por essas populações de baixa densidade que vivem nestes ambientes peculiares.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine whether fish species occupy different mesohabitats, as defined by specific criteria of substrate types in Atlantic Forest blackwater streams. We sampled fourteen coastal blackwater rivers along the coast of São Paulo State, Brazil, during the low-flow season (June-September/2016). For each stream, we selected three mesohabitat types (sand, leaf-litter and trunks) in a 100 m river stretch. We sampled 41 mesohabitats, 31 of which contained fish, resulting in 15 species. When multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was applied to the mesohabitat abiotic variables, no significant differences were indicated between them. ANOSIM for species density and biomass and Redundancy Analyses (RDAs) for species density, biomass and fish community indexes showed similar patterns of community structure among mesohabitats. Nevertheless, fish biomass, diversity and richness were associated with such unique environmental features as low shading and shallow habitats. The observed dispersion among mesohabitats suggests that these communities are subject to some level of disturbance, which may affect the value of patches as refugia. Thus, the sharing of these mesohabitat patches among species may represent an opportunistic strategy to maximize the use of available resources for these low density populations living in these unique environments.

ResumoObjetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a variação espacial e temporal da qualidade da água e as características físicas dos habitats ao longo do trecho médio e alto do Rio Paraitinga, um tributário do Rio Tietê, considerando a possível influência de diferentes condições ripárias ao longo do trecho estudado.MétodosForam amostrados dezesseis locais sob diferentes condições ripárias, incluindo floresta nativa, floresta secundária, pasto e eucalipto, durante a estação seca e chuvosa de 2004/2005, previamente ao represamento do reservatório de Paraitinga. Vários parâmetros físicos e químicos da água e do habitat foram registrados e os dados analisados em relação à distribuição espacial e potencial influência das diferentes condições ripárias.ResultadosOs parâmetros de qualidade da água estiveram, em geral, dentro dos limites estabelecidos pelo CONAMA para águas de Classe 2, com exceção de turbidez e fósforo total. Diferenças sazonais e espaciais foram observadas nos parâmetros limnológicos ao longo do trecho estudado, que foram relacionadas à influências pontuais associadas ao uso do solo e à cobertura vegetal. Características do habitat diferiram entre os trechos médio e superior do rio, especialmente em relação à profundidade, largura, substrato e cobertura do dossel.ConclusõesApesar de uma influência direta sobre as variáveis analisadas não poder ser atribuída exclusivamente à vegetação ripária, diversas características abióticas do rio parecem estar relacionadas à cobertura vegetal. Locais de pasto e eucalipto diferiram quanto às características morfológicas, apresentando também valores mais elevados de fósforo, turbidez e temperatura, o que sugere influências pontuais, indicando que o uso do solo em escala de sub-bacia foi um fator importante que afetou as condições do rio.

Aim: This study aimed to assess the spatial and seasonal variation of the water quality and physical habitat characteristics along the upper-middle stretch of the Paraitinga River, a tributary of Tietê River, considering the potential influence of different riparian conditions along the stretch studied.MethodsSixteen sites with different riparian vegetation, including native forest, secondary forest, pasture, and eucalyptus were sampled during the dry and rainy seasons of 2004/2005, before the damming of the Paraitinga Reservoir. Several physicochemical and habitat parameters were determined and data analyzed in relation to spatial distribution and potential influence of riparian conditions.ResultsWater quality parameters were in general within the limits established by CONAMA for Class 2 waters, except for turbidity and total phosphorus. There were seasonal and spatial differences in the limnological parameters along the stretch studied and apparently they were related to point specific influences associated with land use and canopy cover. Habitat characteristics were markedly different between the upper and middle river stretches, especially in relation to depth, width, substrate and canopy cover.ConclusionsAlthough a direct influence on the observed variables could not be attributed solely to the riparian vegetation, vegetation cover seemed to affect particular stream characteristics. Open pasture and eucalyptus sites were subject to point specific effects that caused phosphorus inputs and higher turbidity and temperature, and showed different morphological features, suggesting that land use at the sub-watershed scale was an important factor affecting stream conditions.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo caracterizar a estrutura trófica da comunidade de peixes de riachos da Serra do Japi, uma área de transição entre a Mata Atlântica e o interior paulista, no sudeste brasileiro. Os peixes foram coletados com equipamento de pesca elétrica em 15 pontos localizados em regiões com diferentes tipos de substrato e vegetação ripária, distribuídos pelas microbacias do Ribeirão Caguaçú, Caxambú, Piraí e Rio Guapeva, durante as estações chuvosa (janeiro/fevereiro) e seca (junho) de 2007. Os 589 indivíduos analisados, pertencentes a 22 espécies, foram classificados em diferentes grupos tróficos, discriminados através de uma matriz de similaridade baseada no Índice Alimentar (IAi). Os resultados mostraram a formação de sete grupos com predomínio de espécies insetívoras e onívoras, seguidas pelas detritívoras, piscívoras, onívoro-carnívoras e herbívoras, que consumiram principalmente itens de origem autóctone com predomínio de algas e formas imaturas de insetos aquáticos. A Análise de Correspondência Canônica, ao correlacionar a biomassa dos grupos tróficos às variáveis ambientais, mostrou que as espécies onívoras, insetívoras e onívoro-carnívoras apresentaram ampla distribuição, enquanto que as detritívoras, herbívoras e piscívoras estiveram restritas a determinados locais, relacionados a diferentes variáveis físicas e químicas tais como nitrogênio total, condutividade e temperatura. Embora o aumento da biomassa de alguns grupos tróficos tenha sido verificado nos locais com maior influência antrópica, os resultados indicaram que os diferentes riachos mantêm uma fauna diversificada, sugerindo que estes se encontram em condições relativamente preservadas.

This study aimed to characterize the trophic structure of the fish assemblage in streams of the Serra Japi, an ecotonal area between the Atlantic Forest and inland forests of São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil. Fish were collected with electrofishing equipment in 15 sites covering different regions, substrate types and riparian vegetation, distributed throughout the Caguaçú River, Caxambú, Piraí and Guapeva River micro-basins, during the rainy (January/February) and dry season (June) of 2007. The 589 specimens analyzed from 22 species, were assigned to different trophic groups, discriminated through a matrix of similarity, based on the food index (IAi). The results show the formation of seven groups with a predominance of insectivorous and omnivorous species, followed by detritivores, piscivores, omnivore-carnivores and herbivores, which consumed mostly items of autochthonous origin, where algae and young insects were dominant. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), correlating the biomass of trophic groups to environmental variables, showed that omnivores, insectivores and omnivore-carnivores displayed a wide distribution, while detritivores, herbivores and piscivores were restricted to specific locations, related to different physical and chemical variables as total nitrogen, conductivity and temperature. Despite the increase in total biomass at the most urbanized sites, the results indicate that the streams maintain a diverse community, suggesting that most of them are in preserved conditions.
