Abstract: Various social and institutional actors participate in the construction of a region, which through historical processes has been individually and collectively shaped and reshaped. In the area known as theTsotsil-Tseltal Highlands, a health system-related region has been fashioned, constituted by relational processes between those who provide health care and those who undertake the search of health. This paper, deals with the historical processes that have configured the offer of different health care options and the articulation that the population makes of them, through their health seeking trajectories, which confers to this zone its own socio-cultural dynamic by forming a relatively distinctive health system region.

Resumen: En la construcción de una región participan diversos actores sociales e institucionales, que en el devenir histórico construyen y reconstruyen procesos de forma individual y colectiva. En la zona denominada Altos Tsotsil-Tseltal se ha configurado una región sanitaria, constituida por procesos salubristas relacionales entre quienes brindan atención a la salud y quienes emprenden la búsqueda de la misma. En este artículo se analizan los procesos históricos que han conformado la oferta de opciones de atención a la salud y las formas en que la población las articula, mediante sus trayectorias de atención, lo que confiere a esta zona una dinámica sociocultural propia al configurar una región sanitaria relativamente distintiva.

Abstract Even though some aspects of the collective imaginary regarding hiv and aids have changed over time, others have become established, contributing to the stigmatization of those who are socially more vulnerable to contracting the syndrome, such as people representing sexual diversity. In many cases, stigmatization is more devastating than the syndrome itself. Using a qualitative analysis, it was observed that new collective imaginaries are evolving around the chronicity of hiv infection. However, these meanings were not shared by all the research participants, since the intersectionality of their social, material, and symbolic conditions makes it possible for them to undergo a diversity of experiences, acquire knowledge, and experience desires.

Resumen Aunque ciertos imaginarios en torno al vih y al sida cambiaron con el transcurso del tiempo, otros han quedado instituidos, lo que ha favorecido la estigmatización de quienes socialmente son más susceptibles de contraer la infección, como es el caso de quienes representan a la diversidad sexual. En muchos casos esta estigmatización es más devastadora que el propio síndrome. A partir de un análisis cualitativo se observa que se están conformando nuevos imaginarios en torno a la cronicidad del vih, sin embargo, estos significados no son compartidos por todos(as) los(as) participantes en esta investigación, pues la interseccionalidad de sus condiciones sociales, materiales y simbólicas les posibilita vivir diversas experiencias, adquirir conocimientos y sentir ciertos deseos.

Resumen Objetivo: analizar la continuidad y los cambios en las prácticas de alimentación y su relación con la salud entre jornaleros agrícolas migrantes que van del sur de México a Sonora. Métodos: estudio cualitativo a través de entrevistas a profundidad a 21 migrantes hombres y mujeres (10 asentados y 11 pendulares) sobre los cambios en las prácticas de alimentación al migrar de zonas rurales del sureste mexicano al Miguel Alemán, Sonora. Resultados: se registró una disminución en las prácticas de autoconsumo y un aumento en el consumo de alimentos industrializados, lo que se relaciona con las condiciones materiales de vida como dificultades económicas y medioambientales para acceder a alimentos de preferencia cultural, así como las largas jornadas laborales que trastocan los momentos y espacios para comer. El cambio en las prácticas alimentarias se relaciona entre migrantes pendulares con la pérdida de peso y problemas gastrointestinales, mientras que los migrantes asentados reportan problemas como diabetes, obesidad, enfermedades cardiacas y menor calidad de vida percibida. Conclusiones: existe una contradicción entre los ideales de la alimentación y las prácticas alimentarias, ya que se identifica la relación entre alimentos industrializados y ciertas enfermedades, pero las condiciones de vida materiales posibilitan nuevos patrones de consumo, a pesar de conocer el efecto en la salud.

Abstract: Objective: to analyze the continuity or change in feeding practices and their relationship with health among migrant farm workers who go from southern Mexico to Sonora. Methods: qualitative study through in-depth interviews with 21 male and female migrants (10 seated and 11 pendulous) about changes in feeding practices when migrating from rural areas of the Mexican southeast to the Miguel Alemán, Sonora. Results: There was a decrease in self-consumption practices and the increase in the consumption of industrialized foods was reinforced, which is related to the material conditions of life such as the economic and environmental difficulties to access food of cultural preference, as well as the long working hours that change the moments and spaces to eat. The change in eating practices is related between pendulous migrants with weight loss and gastrointestinal problems, while settled migrants report problems such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and lower perceived quality of life. Conclusions: there is a contradiction between the ideals of food and feeding practices, since the relationship between industrialized foods and certain diseases is identified, but the material life conditions allow new patterns of consumption, despite knowing the effect on health.

Abstract The objective of this qualitative research is to analyze the rationales operating in the food field among migrant agricultural workers in Miguel Alemán, Sonora, Mexico. Observations, interviews and documentary and journalistic analyses were made. The results highlight self-consumption practices as strategies against the market, while people consume food according to the rationale of what is possible. Free food programs reflect food poverty, which, in addition to social violence, conditions food practice. This research’s limitation was not having information on migrants living in agricultural fields. Its originality lies in the fact that Bourdieu’s theoretical approach was used to analyze the feeding of an affected population. It is concluded that examining the food field allows to understand the logical meaning of the practice, by denaturing food decisions as an individual issue, and to identify the capitals that structure food practice and the situations that affect it, among migrant agricultural workers.

Resumen El objetivo de esta investigación cualitativa es analizar las lógicas que operan en el campo alimentario entre trabajadores agrícolas migrantes en Miguel Alemán, Sonora, México. Se realizaron observaciones, entrevistas y análisis documental y periodístico. Los resultados visibilizan las prácticas de autoconsumo como estrategias frente al mercado, mientras que las personas consumen alimentos en la lógica de lo posible. Los programas de alimentación gratuita reflejan pobreza alimentaria que, sumada a la violencia social, condiciona la práctica alimentaria. La limitante fue no contar con información de migrantes que viven en los campos agrícolas. La originalidad radica en que se utilizó el enfoque teórico de Bourdieu, para analizar la alimentación en población vulnerada. Se concluye que examinar el campo alimentario permite comprender el sentido lógico de la práctica, al desnaturalizar las decisiones alimentarias como asunto individual, e identificar los capitales que estructuran la práctica alimentaria y las situaciones que la vulneran, entre trabajadores agrícolas migrantes.

ABSTRACT The objective is to analyze the food habitus and the changes in eating practices of pendulum and settled migrant agricultural workers in the city of Miguel Aleman in the state of Sonora. Based on an ethnographic approach, 21 in-depth interviews were conducted with both types of migrants from January 2016 to January 2018. We found that in these migrants, the consumption of industrialized products such as flours and sugars has increased, leading to malnutrition mainly in pendulum migrants and chronic diseases such as diabetes in settled migrants. We conclude that the food habitus is adjusted to the physical and economic availability of food and the logic of agricultural work, with eating structured as a practice of necessity. This reality materially and symbolically reproduces the subordinate position of agricultural workers in the face of the globalized economic and food production models, in which eating practices are debilitated by the difficulties of access to food.

RESUMEN El objetivo es analizar el habitus alimentario y los cambios en las prácticas de alimentación, comparando trabajadores agrícolas migrantes pendulares y asentados en la ciudad de Miguel Alemán, del estado de Sonora. A partir de un enfoque etnográfico, se realizaron 21 entrevistas en profundidad entre ambos tipos de migrantes desde enero de 2016 hasta enero de 2018. Encontramos que, en ambos tipos de migrantes, aumenta el consumo de productos industrializados, como harinas y azúcares, cuyos efectos en la salud provocan malnutrición, principalmente en migrantes pendulares, y enfermedades crónicas como diabetes, en migrantes asentados. Concluimos que el habitus alimentario se ajusta a la disponibilidad física y económica de los alimentos y la lógica del trabajo agrícola, así la alimentación se estructura como una práctica por necesidad. Esto reproduce material y simbólicamente la posición subordinada de los trabajadores agrícolas frente al modelo alimentario y económico globalizado, cuyas prácticas de alimentación se recrudecen por las dificultades de acceso a los alimentos.

This article is based on ethnographic research, using such techniques as participant observation, informal discussions, in-depth interviews, and participatory workshops, conducted from 2008 to 2009 in the Zoque community of Guayabal in the municipality of Rayón in the northern region of the state of Chiapas. The aim was to recover the visions of Zoque sociocultural identity revolving around tradition and modernity and to examine some recent historical processes that have at least partially reshaped the sense of their cultural notions and identity practices. Particular attention is paid to aspects that are constituent elements core to its group identity and to significant issues where inter-generational coincidences or discrepancies arise.

Este artículo se basa en una investigación de corte etnográfico, privilegiando técnicas como la observación participante, conversaciones informales, entrevistas a profundidad y talleres participativos, realizada entre 2008-2009. Se analizan los procesos socioculturales e identitarios entre los zoques de Guayabal, municipio de Rayón, en la zona norte del estado de Chiapas, con el objetivo de recuperar las visiones de los zoques en torno a la tradición y a la modernidad, al mismo tiempo que considera algunos procesos históricos recientes que han reconfigurado, al menos parcialmente, el sentido de sus nociones y las prácticas identitarias. Se presta especial atención a los aspectos que para los jóvenes y ancianos son constituyentes centrales de su identidad grupal y se muestran los factores significativos en torno a los cuales existen coincidencias y discrepancias intergeneracionales.

Abstract Through an analysis of the narrative constructs around the experiences of suffering among Chamula indigenous people, the author explores the meanings of the constitutive elements of the corresponding interpretive framework. What is outstanding, first of all, is what the author refers to as dialogue with the body, describing a combination of diverse options for health care, based on the treatment of symptoms and reactions to treatment, frequently linked to the cold-warm duality, but especially to the body’s capacity for maintaining itself active. Also worth noting are the impacts from emotions, whether as triggers for one’s suffering, or as obstacles to recuperating one’s health. And in this regard, the relevance of current social processes is also described. Lastly, the author describes and analyzes the articulation of ideas related to divine punishment, witchcraft and spiritual conceptions—which together describe a vision that is uncertain as well as conflictive and inconsistent with social life, and that shapes the local visions related to sickness and misfortune.

Resumen A través del análisis de constructos narrativos en torno a experiencias del padecimiento entre los chamulas, se exploran los significados de los elementos constitutivos del marco interpretativo de las comentadas. Destaca en primer término lo que llamo «el diálogo con el cuerpo», que da cuenta de la combinación de diversas opciones de atención a la salud basadas en el tratamiento de síntomas y de reacciones derivadas del mismo, a menudo vinculadas con la dualidad frío/calor, pero sobre todo a la capacidad corporal para mantenerse activo. Destaca, asimismo, el impacto que las emociones tienen, ya sea como detonantes de padecimientos o como obstáculos para recuperar la salud; se describe al respecto la relevancia de los procesos sociales vigentes. Por último, se analiza la articulación de ideas relativas al castigo divino, la brujería y las concepciones espirituales, que en su conjunto da cuenta de una visión incierta y a la vez conflictiva e inconsistente de la vida social, que modula las visiones locales en torno a la enfermedad y el infortunio.

Abstract This paper examines exhaustively the literature on the human body as a relatively recent field of studies in social and human sciences. It frames this cognitive field, applying a trans- as well as inter-disciplinary approach. It proposes a number of theoretical and methodological pathways to investigate body as an essential and constituent dimension of cultural and social practices.

Resumen El escrito revisa con alguna exhaustividad la literatura sobre el cuerpo como campo de estudio relativamente reciente en las ciencias sociales y humanas. Enmarca este ámbito cognitivo a partir de una visión epistémica inter y transdisciplinaria. Propone una serie de rutas para indagar teórica y metodológicamente acerca del cuerpo como dimensión primordial y constitutiva de las culturas y las prácticas sociales.

Testimonies about convulsive crises suffered by the Tzotziles and Tzeltales of Chiapas allow us to appreciate how these experiences permit, through time, different interpretations of the symptoms according to their disappearance, their continuation and/or their aggravation. According to these possibilities, the explanations range from positive connotations associated with the presence of the gift of healing, to stigmatizing ideas associated with notions of witchcraft. However, the social processes that surround these experiences are also relevant to the different interpretations of these crises.

Testimonios narrativos sobre crisis convulsivas entre los tzotziles y los tzeltales de Chiapas permiten apreciar cómo a través del tiempo estas experiencias dan cabida a distintas interpretaciones de los síntomas, de acuerdo con su desaparición, su permanencia y/o su complicación. Según estas posibilidades, las explicaciones van desde connotaciones positivas relativas a la presencia del don de curar, hasta ideas estigmatizantes asociadas con nociones de brujería. No obstante, procesos sociales que rodean a estas experiencias son también relevantes en las distintas lecturas de las crisis.
