Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produtividade, a área foliar, a condutância estomática, a fotossíntese, a transpiração e a fração de água transpirável no solo crítica (FATSc) de genótipos de milho híbrido e crioulo, em função do deficit hídrico caracterizado pela FATS. Foram realizados dois experimentos, nos anos agrícolas de 2015/2016 e 2016/2017: um a campo e outro em casa de vegetação. Os seguintes genótipos foram avaliados em sistema irrigado e não irrigado: os crioulos Cinquentinha e Bico de Ouro e a cultivar melhorada AS 1573PRO. A produtividade a campo é maior para 'AS 1573PRO', seguida por Bico de Ouro e Cinquentinha, em ambos os anos de avalição. O deficit hídrico reduz a abertura estomática, a fotossíntese e a taxa de transpiração, o que resulta no fechamento total dos estômatos de 'AS 1573PRO' e Bico de Ouro, e no fechamento parcial dos de Cinquentinha. Houve redução da área foliar de 'AS 1573PRO', Bico de Ouro e Cinquentinha sob deficit hídrico durante o período reprodutivo. No primeiro ano agrícola sob condições de deficit hídrico, 'AS 1573PRO' e Cinquentinha mostram alta tolerância ao deficit hídrico com FTSWc de 0,71, e 'AS 1573PRO' também mostra a maior tolerância no segundo ano agrícola com FTSWc de 0,73. Além disso, Bico de Ouro apresenta sensibilidade ao deficit hídrico nos dois anos agrícolas.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the yield, leaf area, stomatal conductance, photosynthesis, transpiration, and critical fraction of transpirable soil water (FTSWc) of hybrid and landrace corn (Zea mays) genotypes, as affected by the water deficit characterized by the FTSW. Two experiments were carried out in the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 crop years: one in the field and the other in a greenhouse. The following genotypes were evaluated in irrigated and nonirrigated systems: the Cinquentinha and Bico de Ouro landraces and the AS 1573PRO improved cultivar. Yield in the field was higher for 'AS 1573PRO', followed by Bico de Ouro and Cinquentinha in both evaluation years. Water deficit reduces stomatal opening, photosynthesis, and transpiration rate, resulting in the total closure of the stomata of 'AS 1573PRO' and Bico de Ouro, and in the partial closure of those of Cinquentinha. There was a reduction in the leaf area of 'AS 1573PRO', Bico de Ouro, and Cinquentinha under water deficit during the reproductive period. In the first crop year under water deficit conditions, 'AS 1573PRO' and Cinquentinha show a high tolerance to water deficit with a FTSWc of 0.71, and 'AS 1573PRO' also shows the highest tolerance in the second crop year with a FTSWc of 0.73. Moreover, Bico de Ouro is sensitive to water deficit in the two crop years.

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 is a public health emergency of international concern whose detection in recovered asymptomatic patients is dependent on accurate diagnosis as it enables the estimation of the susceptibility of the population to the infection. This demand has resulted in the development of several commercial assays employing recombinant proteins, but the results of these assays are not reliable as they do not involve comparison with natural viral antigens. We independently used the SARS-CoV-2 whole viral antigen (WVA) and recombinant nucleocapsid protein (rNP) to develop in-house ELISAs for IgG detection; the results of these ELISAs were then compared to obtain reliable results. METHODS: WVA and rNP ELISAs were performed on COVID-19 negative sera from patients before the pandemic in Brazil, and on RT-qPCR-positive or SARS-CoV-2-IgG against rNP and IgG against WVA-positive samples from recently infected patients in Sao Paulo, Brazil. RESULTS: Both ELISAs detected a large fraction of infected patients but exhibited certain drawbacks. Higher signals and lower numbers of false-negatives were observed in rNP ELISA; however, a higher fraction of false-positives was observed in control groups. A high number of false-negatives was observed with WVA ELISA. Correlating the results of rNP and WVA ELISAs resulted in improved performance for COVID-19 diagnosis. CONCLUSION: The choice of antigen is an important aspect in optimizing the laboratory diagnosis of COVID-19. The use of rNP ELISA for the detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies seems promising, but comparison of the results with those of WVA ELISA is crucial for accurate test development prior to commercialization. IgG serology using several assays, and with the spectral patterns of SARS-CoV-2, resulted in confusing information that must be clarified before the establishment of diagnostic serology criteria.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a simulação da emissão de folhas de cultivares crioulas e melhoradas de milho realizada pelos modelos CSM-CERES-Maize (linear) e Wang e Engel (não linear). Para tanto, foram realizados dois experimentos nas safras agrícolas de 2013/2014 e 2014/2015 com delineamento de blocos ao acaso. Os coeficientes dos modelos foram calibrados a partir de um conjunto de dados de número de folhas totais de plantas, coletados na semeadura de 04/11/2013 para as cultivares crioulas ‘Cinquentinha’ e ‘Bico de Ouro’ e o híbrido simples ‘AS 1573PRO’. Para a variedade de polinização aberta melhorada ‘BRS Planalto’, os coeficientes foram estimados com dados da semeadura de 13/12/2014. A avaliação dos modelos foi realizada com dados independentes de semeaduras dos anos agrícolas 2013/2014 (Experimento 1) e 2014/2015 (Experimento 2) em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil. A melhor estimativa do número total de folhas, tanto para cultivares crioulas como melhoradas, foi obtida com o modelo Wang e Engel. A raiz do quadrado médio do erro do Wang e Engel foi de 1,0 folha, em comparação com o linear CSM-CERES-Maize, em que a raiz do quadrado médio do erro foi de 1,5 folha.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to compare the simulations of leaf appearance of landrace and improved maize cultivars using the CSM-CERES-Maize (linear) and the Wang and Engel models (nonlinear). The coefficients of the models were calibrated using a data set of total leaf number collected in the 11/04/2013 sowing date for the landrace varieties ‘Cinquentinha’ and ‘Bico de Ouro’ and the simple hybrid ‘AS 1573PRO’. For the ‘BRS Planalto’ variety, model coefficients were estimated with data from 12/13/2014 sowing date. Evaluation of the models was with independent data sets collected during the growing seasons of 2013/2014 (Experiment 1) and 2014/2015 (Experiment 2) in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Total number of leaves for both landrace and improved maize varieties was better estimated with the Wang and Engel model, with a root mean square error of 1.0 leaf, while estimations with the CSM-CERES-Maize model had a root mean square error of 1.5 leaf.

Resumo Objetivo: Uma série de represas ao longo do curso de um rio formam o complexo sistema em cascata de reservatórios. A interconectividade dessas represas são percebidas com a redução da turbidez e fósforo e aumento da riqueza de espécie ao longo do sistema. Além disso, cada reservatório possui suas características, bióticas e abióticas, que devem ser avaliadas e utilizadas como instrumento na elaboração de propostas de manejo contínuo das bacias hidrográficas. O rio Jacuí, com cinco represas inseridas ao longo do seu curso superior, é um importante recurso hídrico do estado do RS, explorado para geração de energia e agricultura, no entanto seus efeitos na comunidade fitoplanctônica das represas construídas em cascata ainda é desconhecido. Dessa forma o presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar padrões espaciais e temporais do fitoplâncton associadas às características climatológicas e limnológicas dos reservatórios de água Ernestina e Itaúba, localizados no curso superior do rio Jacuí, RS, Brasil. Métodos Campanhas amostrais foram realizadas sazonalmente de janeiro de 2012 a fevereiro de 2013, com quatro estações amostrais dentro de cada represa e em três diferentes profundidades. As unidades amostrais foram determinadas de acordo com as três zonas do reservatório: zonas de rio, transição e lago. Resultados Foram identificadas 91 espécies fitoplanctônicas em Ernestina e 130 em Itaúba. Não houve diferença significativa entre padrões verticais e horizontais, pois a comunidade respondeu a mudanças sazonais e as características especificas de cada represa. Conclusões A riqueza de espécies e a transparência da água aumentou a jusante do sistema e alterações no tempo de retenção da água foram importantes para densidade e composição de células.

Abstract Aim: A series of dams along the course of a river forms a complex cascading reservoir system. The interconnectivity of the dams is perceived with the reduction of turbidity and phosphorus and the increase of specific richness throughout the system. Designing a management system that promotes the integration of biotic and abiotic data is essential to these resources of recognized importance for the population, the country's power generation and watersheds management. The Jacuí River is an important water resource in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, along its upper course, five water reservoirs comprise a cascade system tapped for energy generation and agriculture, but the effects on the phytoplankton community of cascading dams are still unknown. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of phytoplankton associated with climatological and limnological characteristics of the Ernestina and Itaúba water reservoirs, located in the upper Jacuí River, RS, Brazil. Methods Sampling campaigns were carried out seasonally from January 2012 to February 2013, with four sampling stations within each dam and at three different depths. The sampling units were determined according to the three zones of the reservoir: river areas, transition and lake. Results: A total of 91 phytoplankton species were identified in Ernestina and 130 in Itaúba. There was no significant difference between vertical and horizontal patterns, since the community responded to seasonal changes and the specific characteristics of each dam. Conclusions The specific richness and water transparency increased downstream of the system and changes in water retention time were important for cell density and composition.

RESUMO: O objetivo neste trabalho foi obter as taxas máximas de desenvolvimento para as fases de emergência, vegetativa e reprodutiva, e testar o desempenho do modelo de Wang e Engel (WE) para estimar o desenvolvimento de cultivares crioulas e melhoradas de milho em diferentes datas de semeadura. A calibração foi realizada com dados de um experimento de campo semeado em 13/12/2014, e a validação com dados independentes de experimentos semeados em 20/08/2013, 04/11/2013, 03/02/2014, 15/08/2014 e 07/01/2015 em Santa Maria, RS. O delineamento foi blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Foram registradas as datas de emergência (EM), espigamento (R1) e maturidade fisiológica (R6) de duas cultivares crioulas ('Cinquentinha' e 'Bico de ouro') e duas melhoradas ('BRS Planalto' e 'AS 1573PRO'). As taxas máximas de desenvolvimento diário diferiram entre as cultivares variando de 0,2400 a 0,3411 dia-1 para a fase de emergência, de 0,0213 a 0,0234 dia-1 para a fase vegetativa e de 0,0254 a 0,0298 dia-1 para a fase reprodutiva. O modelo WE estimou adequadamente os estágios de desenvolvimento de cultivares crioulas e melhoradas de milho, com um erro médio de 3,7 dias. As temperaturas cardinais utilizadas no modelo WE são apropriadas para estimar os estágios de desenvolvimento de cultivares crioulas e melhoradas de milho.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the maximum development rates for the phases of emergence, vegetative and reproductive, and to test the performance of the Wang and Engel (WE) model for simulating the development of landrace and improved maize cultivars sown on different dates. Model calibration was with data collected from a field experiment with a sowing date on December 13, 2014, and the model was tested with independent data from experiments with five sowing dates (August 20 and November 4, 2013, February 3 and August 15, 2014, and January 7, 2015) in Santa Maria, RS. The experiment was a complete randomized block design with four replicates. The dates of emergence (EM), silking (R1), and physiological maturity (R6) of two landraces ('Cinquentinha' and 'Bico de ouro') and two improved maize cultivars ('BRS Planalto' and 'AS 1573PRO') were recorded. Maximum daily developmental rates varied among cultivars from 0.2400 to 0.3411 d-1 for the emergence phase, from 0.0213 to 0.0234 d-1 for the vegetative phase, and from 0.0254 to 0.0298 d-1 for the reproductive phase. The WE model adequately estimated the developmental stages of landraces and improved maize cultivars with a mean error of 3.7 days. The cardinal temperatures used in the WE model were appropriate to estimate the developmental stages of landraces and improved maize cultivars.

Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is an important respiratory pathogens among children between zero-five years old. Host immunity and viral genetic variability are important factors that can make vaccine production difficult. In this work, differences between biological clones of HRSV were detected in clinical samples in the absence and presence of serum collected from children in the convalescent phase of the illness and from their biological mothers. Viral clones were selected by plaque assay in the absence and presence of serum and nucleotide sequences of the G2 and F2 genes of HRSV biological clones were compared. One non-synonymous mutation was found in the F gene (Ile5Asn) in one clone of an HRSV-B sample and one non-synonymous mutation was found in the G gene (Ser291Pro) in four clones of the same HRSV-B sample. Only one of these clones was obtained after treatment with the child's serum. In addition, some synonymous mutations were determined in two clones of the HRSV-A samples. In conclusion, it is possible that minor sequences could be selected by host antibodies contributing to the HRSV evolutionary process, hampering the development of an effective vaccine, since we verify the same codon alteration in absence and presence of human sera in individual clones of BR-85 sample.

Introduction This study assessed the viability of the rabies virus in the argasid tick Carios fonsecai following experimental infection. Methods The mouse inoculation test (MIT), fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used. The rabies virus was administered to ticks via the intra-coelomic route, and the ticks were sacrificed at different time points. Results The inoculated ticks were negative for rabies according to the MIT. Ticks macerated with rabies virus were positive according to the MIT and FAT. All of the tick lots tested by PCR were positive. Conclusions The rabies virus became unviable shortly after its inoculation into tick bodies. Ticks are not likely to play an important role in the epidemiology of rabies.

A variável duração do período de molhamento foliar desempenha papel importante em sistemas de alerta fitossanitários e em estudos de trocas gasosas das plantas. Objetivou-se, neste estudo, estimar essa variável por modelos em um dossel de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) sob irrigação plena e deficitária e comparar tais estimativas com medidas feitas no dossel. Foram utilizados quatro modelos: (1) o do número de horas com umidade relativa superior a um limiar; (2) o da depressão do ponto de orvalho; (3) o da árvore de classificação e regressão e (4) o modelo físico de Penman-Monteith. Os dois primeiros modelos apresentaram os menores erros quando os limiares empíricos foram iguais a 83-84% e 2,6-2,7 ºC; os erros para o terceiro modelo foram da mesma ordem de grandeza dos obtidos pelos demais modelos uma vez que o mesmo utiliza limiares empíricos de três variáveis. Os erros para o modelo de Penman-Monteith foram reduzidos quando as entradas foram a temperatura e a umidade relativa do ar medidas no tratamento sob irrigação deficitária. Para as simulações com os dados do tratamento com irrigação plena os erros deste modelo se mantiveram próximos aos obtidos para as simulações feitas com os dados medidos da estação meteorológica.

Leaf wetness duration variable plays an important role in crop protection warning systems and in studies of gas exchange in plants. The main objective of this study was to estimate the leaf wetness duration in a bean crop (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) by modeling under full and deficit irrigation and to compare it with field measurements. Four models were tested: (1) the model of the number of hours with relative humidity above a threshold; (2) the model of dew point depression; (3) the model of classification and regression tree, and (4) the model of Penman-Monteith. The first two models presented the lowest statistical errors when the empirical thresholds were equal to 83-84% and 2.6-2.7 ºC. The statistical errors of the third model were nearly the same as those obtained for the other models since it uses three empirical thresholds. The errors for the Penman-Monteith model were reduced when the air temperature and humidity input data were measured in the deficit irrigation treatment. For the Penman-Monteith model simulations with the fully irrigated treatment data, the errors remained close to those observed for the simulations with the weather station data.

A difusividade térmica do solo sob condições de campo pode ser estimada a partir de dados da sua temperatura, mas pode também ser estimada por meio das propriedades individuais dos seus componentes junto com a sua organização espacial. A difusividade térmica foi determinada com base em dados de temperatura do solo registrados de meia em meia hora num Nitossolo Vermelho, empregando-se três procedimentos de cálculo (o da razão das amplitudes, da defasagem e do proposto por Seemann), bem como a partir das propriedades individuais dos seus componentes, fazendo-se comparação entre procedimentos e métodos. Para a determinação da difusividade para períodos de onda curtos (um dia), o procedimento da defasagem apresentou-se mais confiável do que o da razão de amplitudes ou o do Seemann, especialmente para a determinação em camadas mais profundas, onde as variações térmicas são pequenas, pois apresentou valores coerentes para a difusividade térmica. O método que utiliza propriedades individuais dos componentes do solo, com os valores da condutividade térmica para arenito e caulinita, resultou em estimativas da difusividade térmica da mesma ordem de grandeza. Ao longo da faixa de teores de água observada, de 0,26-0,34 m³ m-3, o valor médio da difusividade térmica foi de 0,034 m² d-1 na camada superficial (0,05-0,15 m) e de 0,027 m² d-1, na camada subsuperficial (0,15-0,30 m).

Under field conditions, thermal diffusivity can be estimated from soil temperature data but also from the properties of soil components together with their spatial organization. We aimed to determine soil thermal diffusivity from half-hourly temperature measurements in a Rhodic Kanhapludalf, using three calculation procedures (the amplitude ratio, phase lag and Seemann procedures), as well as from soil component properties, for a comparison of procedures and methods. To determine thermal conductivity for short wave periods (one day), the phase lag method was more reliable than the amplitude ratio or the Seemann method, especially in deeper layers, where temperature variations are small. The phase lag method resulted in coherent values of thermal diffusivity. The method using properties of single soil components with the values of thermal conductivity for sandstone and kaolinite resulted in thermal diffusivity values of the same order. In the observed water content range (0.26-0.34 m³ m-3), the average thermal diffusivity was 0.034 m² d-1 in the top layer (0.05-0.15 m) and 0.027 m² d-1 in the subsurface layer (0.15-0.30 m).

INTRODUÇÃO: A raiva é uma importante zoonose responsável por milhares de mortes anualmente em todo o mundo. Embora o ciclo silvestre, onde os cães são os principais transmissores esteja controlado no Brasil, o ciclo aéreo, onde o morcego hematófago Desmodus rotundus é o principal transmissor e diversas espécies de morcegos não hematófagos podem se infectar e transmitir o vírus, permanence como um importante problema econômico e de saúde pública. MÉTODOS: O objetivo deste trabalho foi a caracterização antigênica por meio da utilização de anticorpos monoclonais e a caracterização genética por meio da reação em cadeia pela polimerase pela transcriptase reversa seguida de análise filogenética em morcegos não hematófagos e animais domésticos herbívoros provenientes da região oeste do Estado de São Paulo. RESULTADOS: A análise antigênica de 27 amostras determinou três variantes distintas: Agv-3, AgV-4 e AgV-6; a análise genética de 29 amostras identificou 5 diferentes grupos, todos pertencentes a espécie Rabies virus. CONCLUSÕES: Ainda que apenas amostras de morcegos não hematófagos tenham sido analisadas, a maioria das variantes antigênicas e genéticas identificadas na região estava relacionada com a variante mantida pelos morcegos hematófagos Desmodus rotundus. Amostras de uma mesma variante antigênica segregaram em mais de um clado genético. Este estudo demonstrou a diversidade de linhagens genéticas do vírus da raiva presentes e circulantes em morcegos não hematófagos na região estudada.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is an important zoonosis that causes thousands of deaths worldwide each year. Although the terrestrial cycle, mainly transmitted by dogs, is controlled in Brazil, the aerial cycle remains a serious public health issue, besides the economic problem. In the aerial cycle, the haematophagous bat Desmodus rotundus is the main source of infection, where several different species of non-haematophagous bats can be infected and can transmit the virus. METHODS: The aim of this work was to study the epidemiological pattern of rabies using antigenic characterization with monoclonal antibodies and genetic characterization by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction followed by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of non-haematophagous bats' and herbivorous animals' central nervous system samples from the western region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. RESULTS: From 27 samples, 3 antigenic variants were identified: AgV-3, AgV-4, and AgV-6; and from 29 samples, 5 different clusters were identified, all belonging to the rabies virus species. CONCLUSIONS: Although only non-haematophagous bats were evaluated in the studied region, the majority of samples were from antigenic and genetic variants related to haematophagous bats Desmodus rotundus. Samples from the same antigenic variant were segregated in more than one genetic cluster. This study demonstrated the diversity of rabies virus genetic lineages presented and circulating in non-haematophagous bats in the studied region.

O tensiômetro de polímeros é um equipamento recentemente desenvolvido que permite medir o potencial matricial da água no solo desde a saturação até condições mais secas do que o ponto de murcha permanente. Nesta nota descreve-se a utilização de tensiômetros de polímeros em experimentos de evaporação de cilindros com solo deformado, para determinar as propriedades hidráulicas do material. Nos experimentos foi utilizada terra da camada superficial de um Nitossolo Vermelho. O uso de tensiômetros de polímeros em experimentos de evaporação com colunas de solo permitiu a determinação das relações entre condutividade hidráulica, teor de água e potencial matricial na faixa de potenciais matriciais entre -1 e -150 m.

The polymer tensiometer is a newly developed instrument to measure soil water pressure heads from saturation conditions to drier than the permanent wilting point. In this note we describe how the hydraulic properties of disturbed soil samples were determined in laboratory evaporation experiments with these polymer tensiometers. Soil material from the surface layer of an Ultisol was used. The relation among hydraulic conductivity, water content and pressure heads in the range from -1 to -150 m could be determined using polymer tensiometers in evaporation experiments.

INTRODUÇÃO: Esse trabalho apresenta o primeiro registro de raiva em três espécies de morcegos: Molossus molossus, Molossops neglectus e Myotis riparius na Cidade de São Paulo, Brasil. MÉTODOS: Os morcegos foram diagnosticados como positivos para raiva usando as técnicas padrão de imunofluorescência direta e o teste de inoculação em camundongo. Os isolados foram caracterizados antigenicamente usando um painel de oito anticorpos monoclonais (CDC/Atlanta/USA). As amostras também foram analisadas geneticamente por sequenciamento parcial do gene da nucleoproteína entre as posições 1157 e 1445nt. RESULTADOS: O resultado das análises mostrou que as amostras isoladas da espécie M. molossus apresentou variante antigênica 6, enquanto as outras duas amostras mostraram um perfil diferente daquele estabelecido no painel e ainda não registrado em literatura. Os resultados da analise genética revelaram que a amostra de M. molossus segrega com isolados de Lasiurus sp., M. neglectus segrega com o isolado do subgrupo de Eptesicus furinalis e uma amostra de M. riparius segrega com isolados de Myotis sp. CONCLUSÕES: Os casos relatados neste estudo enfatizam a necessidade do esclarecimento da ocorrência de casos de raiva em morcegos, principalmente em áreas urbanas.

INTRODUCTION: This paper presents the first report of rabies in three bat species, Molossus molossus, Molossops neglectus and Myotis riparius in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Bats were diagnosed as positive for rabies using the fluorescent antibody test and mouse inoculation test. The isolates were characterized antigenically using a panel of eight monoclonal antibodies. The samples were also genetically analyzed by partial sequencing of the portion of nucleoprotein gene between positions 1157 and 1445nt. RESULTS: Analysis of the results verified that the sample isolated from the species M. molossus presented antigenic variant 6, while the other two samples showed a different profile from that established in the panel, one not previously reported in the literature. The results of genetic analysis revealed that the M. molossus sample segregated with Lasiurus sp. isolates, M. neglectus segregated with a subgroup of Eptesicus furinalis isolates and the Myotis riparius sample segregated with Myotis sp. isolates. CONCLUSIONS: The cases reported in this paper emphasize the need for clarification of the circumstances in which cases of rabies in wildlife occur, principally in urban areas.

Algumas espécies de morcegos têm se adaptado ao uso de abrigos em construções urbanas, aumentando a possibilidade de contato desses morcegos com pessoas e animais domésticos e conseqüentemente, o potencial risco de transmissão de raiva. Três morcegos foram encontrados no jardim de uma casa na área urbana da cidade de Jundiaí, Estado de São Paulo, Sudeste do Brasil, dois deles foram positivos para raiva pelas técnicas de imunofluorescência e inoculação em camundongos. Uma grande colônia de E. furinalis foi identificada, vivendo no sótão da casa e 119 morcegos foram encaminhados para diagnóstico de raiva, com mais quatro morcegos positivos. O objetivo desse estudo é apresentar a caracterização genética e antigênica do vírus da raiva isolado desses morcegos e o estudo epidemiológico da colônia.

Some bat species have adapted to the expanding human population by acquiring the ability to roost in urban buildings, increasing the exposure risk for people and domestic animals, and consequently, the likelihood of transmitting rabies. Three dead bats were found in the yard of a house in an urban area of Jundiaí city in the state of São Paulo in southeast Brazil. Two of the three bats tested positive for rabies, using Fluorescent Antibody and Mouse Inoculation techniques. A large colony of Eptesicus furinalis was found in the house's attic, and of the 119 bats captured, four more tested positive for rabies. The objectives of this study were to report the rabies diagnosis, characterize the isolated virus antigenically and genetically, and study the epidemiology of the colony.

O vírus respiratório sincicial humano (HRSV), isolado em 1955, é a principal causa da hospitalização de bebês e crianças pequenas com sintomas de doença respiratória. No mundo inteiro, vários estudos para o desenvolvimento de uma vacina segura e eficiente contra o HRSV têm tido alta prioridade. A região G2 da glicoproteína G é usada como padrão para genotipagem do HRSV. Neste estudo, foi realizada a análise filogenética da glicoproteína G e o estudo comparativo entre a região G2 e o ectodomínio dessa glicoproteína. Cinquenta e três amostras de swab nasal de crianças com menos de cinco anos de idade, apresentando doença respiratória aguda, atendidas no Hospital Universitário (HU) da Universidade de São Paulo durante o ano de 2004, foram submetidas a sequenciamento por PCR e comparadas com seqüências do GenBank. A região G2 mostrou ser adequada para a genotipagem do HRSV.

The Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HRSV), isolated in 1955, is the main cause of hospitalization of babies and infants with respiratory illness. Several studies have been conducted worldwide aiming the development of a safe and effective vaccine against HRSV. The G2 region of glycoprotein G is used as genotyping default. In the present study, we performed a phylogenetic analysis of G protein and a comparative study between G2 region and ectodomain of attachment glycoprotein. Fifty-three nasal swab samples from children less than 5 years old and presenting symptoms of acute respiratory illness, assisted at the University Hospital (UH) of University of Sao Paulo (USP) in 2004, were submitted to sequencing by PCR and compared with GenBank sequences. We concluded that the G2 region is adequate for HRSV genotyping.
