An important and indispensable part of the activity of the scientists and teachers of universities and investigation institutes it is the popularization of their results through the publication in specialized magazines and on the base of these rests their evaluation. In Cuba the mensuration of the scientific results is carried out by the simple count of the articles that professionals publish: A scientist has a bigger merit if he publishes more articles, a teacher one to pass from a category to another superior has to have in his reference a certain number of publishing; that is to say, this is the quantitative stage to which still traffic many countries. Then the methods arose to combine the quantity with the quality and then to pass to a superior scale that happens when the published works are read and quoted in other articles, this is already a metric that measures quality because it means that the science has been "consumed."

Una parte importante e imprescindible de la actividad de los científicos y docentes de universidades e institutos de investigación es la divulgación de sus resultados a través de la publicación en revistas especializadas y sobre la base de estas descansa su evaluación. En Cuba la medición de los resultados científicos se realiza por el conteo simple de los artículos que publican los profesionales: Un científico tiene un mayor mérito si publica más artículos, un docente para pasar de una categoría a otra superior tiene que tener en su aval un número determinado de publicaciones; o sea, esta es la etapa cuantitativa por la que aun transitan muchos países. Luego surgieron los métodos para combinar la cantidad con la calidad y entonces se pasa una escala superior que ocurre cuando los trabajos publicados son leídos y son citados en otros artículos, esto ya es una métrica que mide calidad porque significa que la ciencia se ha “consumido.”

Background: The dynamics of brain derived proteins in cerebrospinal fluid is different from the dynamics of blood-derived proteins. Aim: To describe the empirical data for mannan binding lectin and gives a theoretical interpretation of the dynamics of this protein in cerebrospinal fluid through a new reibergram. Methods: Serum and cerebrospinal fluid mannan binding lectin were measured in 40 normal adults by immunofluorometric assays. The diagnostic criteria were based in; normal control samples defined clinically and diseases with blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier dysfunction. Results: Correlation coefficient between cerebrospinal fluid MBL and serum MBL was very low. Mannan binding lectin reibergram was designed according with previous procedures. Conclusion: Under all conditions of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, the reibergram can identify the occurrence of intrathecal mannan binding lectin synthesis.

Introducción: la dinámica particular de las proteínas derivadas del cerebro en el líquido cefalorraquídeo es diferente a la dinámica de las proteínas derivadas de la sangre. Objetivo: describir los datos empíricos de la lectina de unión a manosa y brindar una interpretación teórica de la dinámica de esta proteína a través de la confección un nuevo reibergrama. Métodos: la lectina de unión a manosa en suero y líquido cfalorraquídeo, fue medida en 40 adultos normales a través de un ensayo inmunofluorométrico. El criterio diagnóstico estuvo basado en; muestras controles (pacientes normales) y muestras de pacientes con enfermedades que cursaron con disfunción de barrera sangre-líquido cefalorraquídeo. Resultados: el coeficiente de correlación entre la lectina de unión a manosa en el líquido cefalorraquídeo y en el suero, fue muy bajo. El reibergrama de la lectina de unión a manosa se diseñó de acuerdo con procedimientos previos. Conclusiones: bajo cualquier condición de barrera sangre-líquido cefalorraquídeo, el reibergrama puede identificar la ocurrencia de síntesis intratecal de lectina de unión a manosa.

Meningococcal meningoencephalitis was a serious pediatric health problem in Cuba before the successful introduction of a Cuban vaccine against Neisseria meningitidis. The present paper assesses the role of the complement system in this disease in unvaccinated sick children, using a novel methodology developed by the authors. Seven children were used, of an average of 5.8 years of age with N. meningitidis meningoencephalitis diagnosed by traditional microbiological methods. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples were obtained at the same time point, and used to quantify major immunoglobulins, IgG subclasses, C3c, C4 and albumin by radial immunodiffusion with commercially available plates. No C3c was found in one of the two deceased patients. Measurable intrathecal synthesis of C3c was observed in the remaining patients, however, intrathecal synthesis of C4 was found in all patients, as demonstrated with the corresponding reibergrams. The measurement of the intrathecal synthesis of these components of the complement system is useful for discriminating immunodeficiencies and to better understand the behavior of the disease.

La meningoencefalitis por Neisseria meningitidis afectó sensiblemente a la población infantil cubana antes de la exitosa campaña con la vacuna producida en Cuba contra esta bacteria. El objetivo del presente trabajo es evaluar, por medio de métodos novedosos desarrollados por los autores, el papel del sistema de complemento en el desarrollo de la enfermedad en niños con la enfermedad que no fueron vacunados. Siete niños con edad promedio de 5.8 años con meningoencefalitis por N. meningitidis, diagnosticados por los métodos microbiológicos tradicionales. Las muestras de suero y líquido cefalorraquídeo se obtuvieron simultáneamente y se cuantificaron las inmunoglobulinas mayores, las subclases de IgG, C3c, C4 y la albúmina por inmunodifusión radial en placas comerciales. Uno de los dos pacientes que fallecieron no poseía C3c en tales líquidos biológico s. Se observó síntesis intratecal de C3c en los otros pacientes y síntesis intratecal de C4 en todos los pacientes estudiados, lo cual se demostró a partir de los correspondientes reibergramas diseñados en Cuba para estos componentes del sistema de complemento. La determinación de la síntesis intratecal de estos componentes del sistema de complemento es útil para discriminar inmunodeficiencias y entender el comportamiento de la enfermedad.

Morbimortality due to meningococcal disease in Cuba have been diminished by a massive meningococcal (VA-MENGOC-BC®) vaccination campaign. However, some years later, meningococcal disease in vaccinated children is reported. This study aims at describing the neuroinmmunological and clinical behavior of the illness in 12 vaccinated children, who were admitted at the Pediatric Hospital from San Miguel del Padrón municipality suffering from meningoencephalitis due to Neisseria meningitidis. Simultaneous blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples were obtained. Major immunoglobulin and albumin were quantified in both fluids by radial immunodiffusion, these results were compared to those of eight non-immunized patients who were sick before this vaccine was included in the National Vaccination Schedule. Neuroimmunological response and the clinical characteristics of vaccinated patients were different from what was previously observed in non-vaccinated patients. The disease was less serious in the vaccinated group. The pattern of intrathecal synthesis of immunoglobulins was also different in both groups. The mean value of intrathecal synthesis of IgG, IgM, IgA was statistically significant higher in non-vaccinated patients. This study leads to the conclusion that in the studied sample the vaccine modifies the immunological response and the clinical frame of the disease.

La morbimortalidad por la enfermedad meningocócica en Cuba disminuyó notablemente después de la introducción de la vacuna VA-MENGOC-BC®. Sin embargo, años después de ser vacunados se han reportado algunos niños que enfermaron. En este trabajo nos propusimos describir el comportamiento neuroinmunológico y clínico de esta enfermedad en 12 pacientes vacunados que fueron ingresados en el Hospital Pediátrico de San Miguel del Padrón con el diagnóstico de meningoencefalitis producida por Neisseria meningitidis. Se tomaron muestras de forma simultánea de sangre y líquido cefalorraquídeo para la cuantificación de albúmina e inmunoglobulinas mayores por inmunodifusión radial; para el análisis de los resultados se tomó como referencia el registro histórico de los resultados de ocho pacientes no inmunizados que enfermaron antes de incluir esta vacuna en el Esquema Nacional de Vacunación. La respuesta neuroinmunológica y las características clínicas de los pacientes vacunados resultaron diferentes a lo observado previamente en pacientes no vacunados. El grupo vacunado mostró un cuadro menos grave de la enfermedad. El patrón de síntesis intratecal de inmunoglobulinas fue diferente entre los dos grupos. La media de la síntesis intratecal de IgG, IgM e IgA fue significativamente superior en el grupo de los pacientes no vacunados. Este estudio nos permitió concluir que en la muestra estudiada la vacuna modificó la respuesta neuroinmunológica y el cuadro clínico de la enfermedad.

Aimed at studying the visibility of the Cuban scientific production, the publications of both, merit and number academic members of the Biomedical Section and of the Natural and Exact Sciences Section of the Cuban Academy of Science, processed in the Scopus database, were identified. Two women, doctors Rosa María Más Ferreiro and María Guadalupe Guzmán, were not only the most productive ones, but also their works had the best impact. These findings corroborated the role played by women in the Cuban science.

Con el objetivo de estudiar la visibilidad de la producción científica de Cuba, se identificaron las publicaciones de académicos cubanos, tanto los de mérito como los de la Sección de ciencias biomédicas y de la Sección de ciencias exactas y naturales de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba, procesada en la base de datos Scopus. Dos mujeres: las doctoras Rosa María Más Ferreiro y María Guadalupe Guzmán, no sólo fueron las más productivas sino que además, sus obras presentaron el mejor impacto. El hallazgo corrobora el papel de la mujer en la ciencia cubana.

The first report in the Western Hemisphere of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which causes eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, was made in Cuba, in 1981. For 25 years, several Cuban researchers have studied the parasite and the disease it produces in human beings. In order to analyse the scientific impact of these contributions, Medline (PubMed), ScieELO, Revistas Médicas Cubanas, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar y WOSCU databases, were reviewed. The 37 papers found are a proof of the contributions or our researchers to the universal knowledge of this emerging parasitosis in our hemisphere.

El primer informe en el hemisferio occidental sobre el Angiostrongylus cantonensis, causante de la meningoencefalitis eosinofílica, se realizó en Cuba en 1981. A lo largo de 25 años, muchos investigadores cubanos han estudiado, tanto al parásito, como la enfermedad que produce en el hombre. Con el objetivo de analizar el impacto científico de estos aportes, se revisaron las bases de datos Medline (PubMed), ScieELO, Revistas Médicas Cubanas, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar y WOSCU. Los 37 artículos identificados constituyen una prueba del aporte de nuestros investigadores al conocimiento universal de esta parasitosis emergente en nuestro hemisferio.

A descriptive, linear and prospective study was made in 40 patients presented with symptoms related to andropause, and came to Flower Therapy Consultation to assess usefulnes of this type of therapy in treatment of symptoms. In all patientes we carried out a survey and treatment was prescribed, when this latter was concluded they were assessed allowing analysis of symptoms evolution. In study sample we found that the more frequent psychological symptoms are anxiety, depression and irritability. These symptoms were those with a more favourable evolution when second treatment was concluded. By other hand, physical symptoms also had a improvement percentage in this stage.

The National Health Award has become a relevant scientific event of the Cuban medical sciences. The visibility and impact of the annual health awards granted in 2006 in the modality of scientific articles are analyzed. To this end, PubMed and Web of Science databases, as well as Scopus and Google Scholar databases, were reviewed to evaluate the visibility and impact. 75 % of the awarded publications were processed by PubMed and Web of Science. As regards the impact factor of the journals, 2 had a very high impact factor, 4 a high impact factor, 1 a moderate impact factor and 2 did not have a recognized impact factor. Three articles were had 8 or more citations in Scopus and Google Scholar. This paper may contribute to open the study of this kind of analysis of the national scientific production.

El Premio Anual de la Salud se ha convertido en un acontecimiento científico relevante de las ciencias médicas cubanas. Se analiza la visibilidad e impacto de los premios anuales de la salud en la modalidad de artículo científico del año 2006. Para ello, se revisaron las bases PubMed y Web of Science para evaluar la visibilidad e impacto, se revisaron las bases Scopus y Google Académico. El 75% de las publicaciones premiadas fueron procesadas por PubMed y el Web of Science. Con respecto al factor de impacto de las revistas, dos presentan un muy alto factor de impacto, 4 un factor de impacto alto, 1 un factor de impacto moderado y 2 no tienen un factor de impacto reconocido. Tres artículos recibieron 8 o más citas en Scopus y Google Académico. Sirva la presente contribución para abrir el estudio en esta modalidad de análisis de la producción científica nacional.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory and progressive disease of the central nervous system in which local inflammatory injuries of the brain white matter appears, being the most outstanding feature the myeline loss (demyelination). OBJECTIVE: To determine if the complement system might be involved in the MS immunopathogeny favouring the mechanism intervening in the myelin destruction. METHOD: Samples of sera and CSF from twelve patients with a diagnosis of MS obtained at the moment of the admission to the hospital at the beginning of the break out, were collected. Levels of C3c and albumin in sera and in CSF were quantified using radial immunodiffusion plates. RESULTS: High values over 80% of intrathecal synthesis were obtained except in one of the patients. CONCLUSION: Intrathecal synthesis of C3c and its liberation to the CSF means that the activation of the complement system in any of the two ways has taken place, and that once performed its biological functions, has suffered a degradation process.

INTRODUCCIÓN: La esclerosis múltiple (EM) es una enfermedad crónica, inflamatoria y progresiva del sistema nervioso central que cursa con la aparición de lesiones inflamatorias focales en la sustancia blanca cerebral, en las que lo más llamativo es la pérdida de mielina (desmielinización). OBJETIVO: Conocer si el sistema de complemento puede estar involucrado en la inmunopatogenia de la EM favoreciendo los mecanismos que median la destrucción de la mielina. MÉTODO: Se colectaron muestras de suero y LCR de doce pacientes con diagnóstico de EM obtenidas en el momento del ingreso al inicio del brote. Se cuantificaron los niveles de C3c y albúmina en suero y en LCR en placas de inmunodifusión radial. RESULTADOS: Se obtuvieron altos valores que superan el 80% de síntesis intratecal, menos en uno de los pacientes. CONCLUSION: La síntesis intratecal de C3c y su liberación al LCR significa que ha sucedido la activación del sistema de complemento en alguna de las dos vías y que una vez cumplidas sus funciones biológicas, ha sufrido un proceso de degradación y liberación al LCR en forma de C3c.

It is known that human infection caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) has an increasing significance in modern medicine due to the great number of diseases it produces, depending on the immunological status of the subject. In patients presenting with imunocompetence, the meningoencephalitis caused by CMV is exceptional. A general review of this topic was made, including the report of a young adult with no history of immunosuppressive pathologies with meningoencephalitis caused by CMV that was subjected to a neuroimmunological study. A marked dysfunction of blood-CSF barrier, and intrathecal synthesis of classes IgA and IgM were observed. The IgG-ratio (CSF/serum) was below IgA ratio, and the levels of lactic acid were high. The detection of CMV antigens by PCR confirmed the diagnosis. It was concluded that the neuroimmunological study showed atypical features according to the reported in literature, and that it may help in the diagnosis of other cases with a similar presentation

Se sabe que la infección humana por citomegalovirus (CMV) ha ganado en importancia en la medicina moderna, por el gran número de enfermedades que produce, en dependencia del estado inmunológico del individuo. En pacientes inmunocompetentes, la meningoencefalitis por CMV es excepcional. Se hizo una revisión general del tema que incluyó el reporte de un adulto joven sin antecedentes de patologías inmunosupresoras con meningoencefalitis a CMV al que se le realizó estudio neuroinmunológico. Se observó marcada disfunción de la barrera sangre-LCR y síntesis intratecal de las clases IgA e IgM. La razón (LCR/suero) IgG se encontró por debajo de la razón IgA y los niveles de ácido láctico fueron elevados. La detección de antígenos de CMV por técnicas de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa confirmó el diagnóstico. Se concluyó que el estudio neuroinmunológico mostró características atípicas de acuerdo con lo reportado en la literatura por lo que puede ayudar al diagnóstico de otros casos con igual presentación
