Abstract The charcoal production when performed in woods with high moisture content negatively impacts the pyrolysis and causes an increase of greenhouse emissions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of moisture on the production and quality of charcoal for the pig iron industry. The slow pyrolysis of Eucalyptus sp. was carried out in four different wood moistures, 0, 20, 40 and 60% (dry base). The charcoal and gas yield decreased according to the increase of wood moisture. On the other hand, the bio-oil yield and charcoal friability increased along with the moisture content. The proximate analysis, bulk density and higher heating value of the charcoal were not influenced by the moisture content. The use of wood with moisture content below 20% in the production of charcoal is an alternative to improve productivity, contributing for the economic sustanainability of this sector.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo comparar duas metodologias de amostragem, a amostragem casual simples (ACS) e a amostragem casual estratificada (ACE), com o propósito de determinar o número ótimo de amostras de madeira em tora para obter o teor de umidade da população. Foram consideradas diferentes porcentagens de erro admissível (5, 10, 15 e 20%) para cada metodologia de amostragem. Na condução do trabalho foram amostradas aleatoriamente, de um lote de 250 st de madeira, 144 toras e distribuídas em quatro classes de diâmetro. Em seguida, determinou-se o teor de umidade dessas amostras, e a partir desses valores foram calculadas as estimativas populacionais (média, desvio-padrão, variância, coeficiente de variação e erro-padrão) pela ACS e pela ACE, determinando assim o número ótimo de toras (n) a serem amostradas nas diferentes porcentagens do erro admissível adotadas neste estudo, a 95% de probabilidade. De acordo com os resultados, o número de toras a serem amostradas pela ACS para cada erro admissível 5, 10, 15 e 20% foi, respectivamente, 214, 55, 25 e 14 toras; para a ACE (proporcional) foi 141, 35, 16 e 9; e para ACE (ótima) foi 136, 34, 15 e 8. Concluiu-se que o método de amostragem mais indicado para este estudo, considerando um mesmo erro admissível, foi a ACE.

ABSTRACT This study had the objective of comparing two methodologies of sampling, Simple Random Sampling (ACS) and Stratified Random Sampling (ACE) to determine the optimum number of roundwood samples to obtain the moisture content of the population. In order to achieve this goal, different percentages of allowable error (5,10,15 and 20%) were considered for each sampling methodology. In the conduction of this study, the samples were randomly taken from a lot of 250 steres of wood, 144 roundwood of three meters of length and distributed in four classes of diameter. Later, the moisture content of these samples was determined. And, from these values, the population estimates (average, standard deviation, variance, coefficient of variation, and standard error) by ACS and ACE methods, helped to determine the optimum number of roundwood (n) to be sampled from different percentages of allowable error adopted in this study at 95% probability. According to the results, the amount of roundwood to be sampled from ACS for each allowable error 5, 10, 15 and 20% was respectively 214, 55, 25 and 14. For the ACE (proportional allocation) the amount of roundwood was 141, 35, 16 and 9 for ACE (optimal allocation) this number was 136, 34, 15 and 8. It was concluded that the most indicated sampling method for this study, considering the allowable error, was the ACE method.

RESUMO O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho e a eficiência de um sistema de transporte de gases da carbonização até um queimador. O sistema de transporte de gases da carbonização consiste na retirada destes da chaminé dos fornos, os quais passam por tubulações até atingirem o queimador. Para evitar a condensação dos gases e geração de efluentes líquidos, construiu-se um sistema que circunda e aquece a tubulação que conduz os gases da carbonização. Estes foram denominados gases de traço e são conduzidos no sentido oposto aos gases da carbonização. Foi feito um monitoramento da temperatura da rede de transporte dos gases em diferentes pontos de coleta utilizando termopares. Foram determinadas as correlações existentes entre os diferentes pontos de coletas de temperaturas por meio do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson a 95% de probabilidade e determinado uma regressão entre essas variáveis que apresentaram correlações significativas. A temperatura média dos gases da carbonização na saída da chaminé foi de 116ºC e o mesmo entrou no queimador com a temperatura média de 166,7ºC, proporcionando um acréscimo de temperatura de 50,7ºC. A temperatura média na saída da chaminé do queimador para o gás de traço foi de 218,35ºC e o mesmo foi lançado para atmosfera a 125,2ºC, tendo portando uma perda térmica de 93,15ºC. Conclui-se que o sistema de transporte de gases utilizando gás de traço foi eficiente no que concerne a não condensação dos gases da carbonização, permitindo um melhor aproveitamento energético dos mesmos e evitando a geração de efluentes líquidos indesejáveis.

ABSTRACT The goal of this study was to evaluate the performance and efficiency of a transmission system of carbonization gas to the combustion chamber of a burner. The gas transportation network (GTN) consists of removing the gases from the chimney of the furnaces, which pass through pipes until they reach the burner. A heating system was built surrounding the pipe that leads the carbonization gases to avoid the condensation of gases and the generation of wastewater in the pipes. These gases were named trace gases and guided in the opposite direction to the carbonization gases. This study monitored of the temperature of the GTN by analyzing different points of the process with thermocouples attached on the pipes. The correlation between the various temperatures in the sampling points determined the Pearson’s correlation coefficient to 95% of probability and a regression between the variables that had a significant association. The average temperature of carbonization gases in the chimney outlet was 116ºC, and it entered the burner with an average temperature of 166.7ºC, providing an increase of 50.7ºC on the temperature. The average temperature in the burner chimney outlet for trace gas was 218.35ºC, and it was released to the atmosphere with a temperature of 125.2ºC. The thermal loss was 93.15ºC. The GTN that uses trace gas is presented as an alternative to the flow of gas carbonization. This system is effective regarding non-condensing gases through the pipes, allowing a better use of energy and avoiding the generation of undesirable effluents.

RESUMO O uso da biomassa para fins energéticos tem sido destaque como forma de reduzir a dependência energética de fontes não renováveis. A macaúba, espécie Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. ex Martius, é uma palmeira arborescente. Possui um grande potencial energético a partir do processamento de seus frutos. O objetivo desse trabalho foi caracterizar os resíduos da macaúba após o processamento dos frutos, a fim de avaliar a sua utilização in natura e como carvão vegetal. O endocarpo apresentou teor de carbono fixo, poder calorífico e densidade a granel superiores, quando comparado aos demais resíduos e menores teores de cinza. O poder calorífico do carvão do endocarpo foi superior, enquanto que os teores de materiais voláteis do carvão do epicarpo apresentaram os maiores resultados. Todos os resíduos avaliados do processamento do fruto da macaúba têm potencial na geração de energia, especialmente o endocarpo e o epicarpo. O carvão do endocarpo possui características adequadas para sua utilização como fonte de energia e como redutor.

ABSTRACT The use of biomass for energy purposes has been highlighted in as a way to reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources. Macaw palm, Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. ex Martius, is an arborescent palm and has a high energy potential from the fruit processing. The aim of this study was to characterize the macaw palm residues after the fruit processing to evaluate its use "in natura" and as charcoal. The endocarp showed higher fixed carbon content, heating value and bulk density compared with other residues and lower ashes content. The heating value of endocarp charcoal was the highest, whereas the volatile matter levels of epicarp charcoal showed higher results. All evaluated residues from the macaw palm fruit processing have potential in power generation, especially the endocarp and the epicarp. The endocarp charcoal has suitable characteristics as source of energy and as a reductant.

RESUMO Utilizando dados da série temporal mensal de preços de carvão vegetal em Minas Gerais no período de janeiro de 2000 à setembro de 2014, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o uso do sistema neuro-fuzzy para modelagem e previsão de preços. Foram utilizados quatro estruturas de modelagem considerando diferentes defasagens da variável preço (1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 defasagens). A estrutura mais adequada para o sistema neuro-fuzzy foi escolhido com base nos valores de raiz quadrada do erro médio quadrático, erro médio absoluto, erro médio quadrático, erro médio percentual absoluto e máximo erro percentual absoluto para o período de previsão. Com os resultados encontrados, é possível concluir que um sistema neuro-fuzzy pode ser usado para prever corretamente os preços do carvão vegetal.

ABSTRACT Using a monthly time series of charcoal prices in Minas Gerais from January 2000 to September 2014, this study aimed to evaluate the use of neuro-fuzzy system to model the series and forecasting prices. We used four modeling structures for different prices lags (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 lags). The structure most appropriate for neuro-fuzzy system was chosen based on the root mean square error, mean absolute error, mean squared error, mean absolute percentage error and maximum absolute percentage error for the forecasted period. With the results found, it is possible to conclude that a neuro-fuzzy system can be used properly to predict the charcoal prices.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to quantify the damage caused by Caryedes sp. in seeds of E. contortisiliquum; to test different methods to overcome dormancy; and to determine the influence of this damage on the germination and vigor of the seeds. Healthy seeds were submitted to five treatments in order to overcome dormancy. Five-hundred fruits with a total 5,245 seeds, with a mean of 10.47 ± 2.99 per fruit, were evaluated. As a result, 9.00 ± 3.32 were considered healthy and 0.26 ± 0.63 were damaged by the bruchid. The scarification toward the heel promoted higher germination and it was used for comparison to the attacked seeds. The bruchid attack can significantly reduce the germination of tamboril seeds.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar o dano de Caryedes sp. em sementes de Enterolobium contortisiliquum; testar diferentes metodologias de superação da dormência; e determinar a influência destes danos na germinação e vigor. As sementes sadias foram submetidas a cinco tratamentos para superação de dormência. Foram avaliados 500 frutos totalizando 5245 sementes, com média de 10,47 ± 2,99 por fruto. Destas, 9,00 ± 3,32 estavam sadias e 0,26 ± 0,63 danificadas pelo bruquídeo. A escarificação mecânica no sentido do hilo promoveu maior germinação e foi utilizada para comparar com as sementes atacadas. O ataque do bruquídeo pode diminuir significativamente a germinação das sementes de tamboril.
