Abstract Residual stresses (RS) in pipes welded by a fully automated friction welding process, called FRIEX, are investigated using the contour method (CM) and the X-ray diffraction method (XRD). Samples were produced using a self-developed equipment, which is based on the interaction between a consumable intermediate rotary ring and two stationary pipe sections, by varying the loading rate applied during the welding of API 5L B pipes with an API X65 ring. Mechanical and metallurgical properties were locally analyzed through metallography and microflat tensile tests. RS measured by XRD and CM showed comparable values; tensile zones were found in the pipe HAZ and compressive stresses were found in its adjacent areas. Tensile RS of approximately half the local yield strength of the components were also found, mostly on the internal surface, and their values decrease with increasing welding loads. Microflat tensile tests showed an increase in yield strength of pipe TMAZ and HAZ, with a clear influence of loading rates.

RESUMO: O objetivo do estudo foi caracterizar os focos de EIA identificados, entre 2009 e 2015, na região oeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Inicialmente foram identificados 26 equinos positivos em 24 propriedades, sendo que cada propriedade foi considerada um foco. Os diagnósticos foram realizados por imunodifusão em gel de ágar (AGID) na ocasião do transporte ou como medidas sanitárias, em casos de vínculo com animais infectados ou para fim de certificação do status sanitário. Um foco foi identificado em animais transportados ilegalmente da Argentina para o Brasil. Os estabelecimentos positivos eram fazendas ou estábulos e os animais infectados utilizados para trabalho, esporte ou reprodução. Quinze focos ocorreram em propriedades não cadastradas no SVO. Onze focos localizaram-se na zona urbana e 13 em propriedades rurais. Somente no ano de 2015 foram diagnosticados 12 dos 24 focos, sendo que no munícipio de São Borja ocorreram nove surtos neste período. Em duas propriedades o resultado inicial não foi confirmado no reteste, fazendo com que estes focos fossem encerrados imediatamente. Em três propriedades, durante o saneamento, identificou-se outros 12 animais positivos em três propriedades, de uma população de 1.108 susceptíveis. Assim sendo, pode-se concluir que a infecção que está presente na região, ocorre de maneira subclínica, associada a propriedades não cadastradas no SVO e animais transportados de forma ilegal, inclusive transporte internacional ilegal.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to characterize the outbreaks of equine infectious anemia (EIA) identified, between the years 2009 and 2015, in the western region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We identified 26 positive horses on 24 properties. Each positive property was considered an outbreak of the disease. The diagnoses were made using the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test as a part of the sanitary checks conducted during animal transportation or certification of the horse´s sanitary status. The positive properties included farms or horse barns, and the infected animals were used for ranch work, sports, or reproduction. One outbreak was identified in animals that were being illegally transported from Argentina to Brazil. Fifteen outbreaks occurred on properties that were not registered with the Official Veterinary Service (OVS). Eleven outbreaks were identified in urban areas and 13 in rural areas. Twelve of the 24 outbreaks were diagnosed in 2015 alone, nine of which occurred in São Borja county. On two properties, a diagnosis could not be confirmed with a retest; therefore, these outbreaks were discharged. During sanitation checks on three properties, 12 additional positive animals were identified among a population of 1,108 susceptible animals. Based on these findings, we concluded that a subclinical form of the infection is present in that area, which is linked to properties that are not registered with the OVS, and that animals which are transported illegally across international borders represent a potential risk.

RESUMO: O vírus da estomatite vesicular (vesicular stomatitis virus, VSV) é o agente de doença vesicular que afeta várias espécies e que, em suínos e ruminantes, é clinicamente confundível com a febre aftosa. Os equinos são particularmente susceptíveis ao VSV, servindo de sentinelas para a circulação viral. O presente trabalho investigou a presença de anticorpos neutralizantes contra o VSV Indiana III (VSIV-3) em amostras de soro de 3626 equinos de seis estados das regiões Sul (RS, n=1011), Centro-oeste (GO e DF, n=1767) e Nordeste (PE, PB, RN e CE, n=848), coletadas entre 2013 e 2014. Anticorpos neutralizantes contra o VSIV-3 em títulos iguais ou superiores a 40 foram detectados em 641 amostras (17,7%; IC95%: 16,5-19,0%), sendo 317 do CE (positividade de 87,3%; IC95%: 83,4-90,5%); 109 do RN (65,7%; IC95%: 57,8-72,7%); 124 da PB (45,4%; IC95%: 39,4-51,5%); 78 de GO/DF (4,4%; IC95%: 3,5-5,5%) e em nove amostras do RS (0,9%; IC95%: 0,4-1,7%). Uma parcela das amostras dos estados do Nordeste e Centro-oeste apresentou altos títulos neutralizantes, indicando exposição recente ao vírus. Já as amostras do RS apresentaram títulos baixos de anticorpos, indicando provável exposição temporalmente remota. Quando testadas contra outros sorotipos do VSV (Indiana I e New Jersey), várias amostras apresentaram atividade neutralizante, porém em títulos muito inferiores, indicando a especificidade dos anticorpos para o VSIV-3. Esses resultados demonstram circulação relativamente recente do VSIV-3 em várias regiões do Brasil, sobretudo em estados do Nordeste, confirmando relatos clínicos e demonstrando a importância sanitária dessa infecção.

ABSTRACT: Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is the agent of a vesicular disease that affects many animal species and may be clinically confounded with foot-and-mouth disease in ruminant and swine. Horses are especially susceptible to VSV and may serve as sentinels for virus circulation. The present study investigated the presence of neutralizing antibodies against VSV Indiana III (VSIV-3) in serum samples of 3,626 horses from six states in three Brazilian regions: Southern (RS, n = 1,011), Midwest (GO/DF, n = 1,767) and Northeast (PB, PE, RN and CE, n = 848) collected between 2013 and 2014. Neutralizing antibodies against VSIV-3 (titers ≥40) were detected in 641 samples (positivity of 17.7%; CI95%:16.5-19.0%), being 317 samples from CE (87.3%; CI95%: 83.4-90.5 %); 109 from RN (65.7%; CI95%: 57.8 -72.7%); 124 from PB (45.4%; CI95%: 39.4-51.5%); 78 from GO/DF (4.4%; CI95%: 3.5-5.5%) and nine samples of RS (0.9%; CI95%: 0.4-1.7%). Several samples from the Northeast and Midwest harbored high neutralizing titers, indicating a recent exposure to the virus. In contrast, samples from RS had low titers, possibly due to a past remote exposure. Several positive samples presented neutralizing activity against other VSV serotypes (Indiana I and New Jersey), yet in lower titers, indicating the specificity of the response to VSIV-3. These results demonstrated a relatively recent circulation of VSIV-3 in northeastern Brazilian States, confirming clinical findings and demonstrating the sanitary importance of this infection.

PURPOSE: To describe a novel approach for implanting intramuscular electrodes in the diaphragm through videolaparoscopy. METHODS: We used twelve pigs for this videolaparoscopic technique, which permits at the same time to explore the diaphragm, to locate its motor points and to fix the electrodes in the diaphragm bilaterally. In this technique we used three trocars: one portal for a 10-mm 0° viewing angle laparoscope, one portal for the manipulation of structures and another for electrode implantation. RESULTS: All animals survived the procedure without pneumothorax/capnothorax or other complication. Implanted electrodes provided an appropriate interface between the muscle and the electrical current generator, and electroventilation was satisfactorily generated in all animals. CONCLUSION: This videolaparoscopic technique with three trocars enables the exploration and identification of motor points and an efficient fixation of one or two electrodes in each hemidiaphragm.

RESUMO: Um levantamento soroepidemiológico foi realizado através do teste de ELISA indireto para determinar a soroprevalência da infecção por Pythium insidiosum em equinos no estado do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), classificadas de acordo com o Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). As amostras utilizadas eram provenientes do cadastro das propriedades do Serviço Veterinário Oficial (SVO), da Secretaria da Agricultura, Pecuária e Agronegócio do RS (SEAPA-RS), coletadas para o inquérito da anemia infecciosa equina de 2014. As coletas foram realizadas durante os meses de setembro e outubro de 2013, abrangendo as sete mesorregiões geográficas do RS, e totalizaram 1.002 amostras de soro. Do total das amostras testadas, 11.1% (CI95% 9.23 to 13.22) foram soropositivas para P. insidiosum. Constatou-se o risco relativo (RR) da presença de anticorpos anti-P. insidiosum nas regiões Sudeste 11,17(IC95%, 4,65-26,8), Porto Alegre 4,62 (IC95%, 1,70-12,55), Sudoeste 11,17 (IC95%, 4,65-26,8) e Noroeste 3,72 (IC95%, 1,52-9,09). Observou-se a maior soroprevalência (69,1%) em fêmeas com RR de 1,59 (IC95%, 1,11-2,27). Quanto à presença de açudes, evidenciou-se soropositividade em 74,4% das propriedades, apresentando associação de 2,13 (IC95%,1,16-3,91) em comparação com propriedades sem açude. Em propriedades com assistência veterinária, foi verificada a frequência de 72,7% e RR de 3,04 (IC95%,1,85-4,98). Diante da relevância da pitiose em rebanhos equinos, destaca-se a presença de anticorpos anti-P. insidiosum em equinos no estado do RS.

ABSTRACT: An epidemiological survey was carried out by performing an Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) test to determine the seroprevalence of Pythium insidiosum infection in equine in Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Brazil. The serological study covered seven geographical regions of RS, classified according to the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). The samples were obtained from official veterinary service (Serviço Veterinário Oficial, SVO) linked to the Secretaria da Agricultura, Pecuária e Agronegócio of RS (SEAPA-RS) to proceed the investigation of equine infectious anemia in 2014. Samples were collected during the months of September and October of 2013, covering the seven geographical regions of RS, and totalized 1,002 serum samples. The seroprevalence for P. insidiosum in RS was 11.1% (CI95% 9.23 to 13.22). The relative risk (RR) of the presence of antibodies anti-P. insidiosum was in the regions Southeast 11.17 (CI95%, 4.65 to 26.8), Porto Alegre 4.62 (CI95%, 1.70 to 12.55), Southwest 11.17 (CI95%, 4.65 to 26.8) and Northwestern 3.72 (CI95%, 1.52 to 9.09). The highest prevalence (69.1%) was observed in females with RR of 1.59 (CI95%, 1.11 to 2.27). When the presence of dams was evaluated, the seropositivity was evident in 74.4%, presenting an association of 2.13 (CI95%, 1.16 to 3.91) compared to farms without dams. In properties with veterinary assistance, the frequency of 72.7% and RR of 3.04 (CI95%,, 1,85 to 4,98) of seropositivity were observed. Due to the importance of pythiosis in horse herds, this study highlights the presence of anti-P. insidiosum antibodies in horses in RS, Brazil.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho reprodutivo de 423 fêmeas suínas de ordem de parto 1 a 9 submetidas à inseminação intra-uterina (IAU), com um novo modelo de pipeta (T1) cuja extremidade não é fixada na cérvix ou uma pipeta de IAU modelo Verona® e que permite a fixação da sua extremidade em espiral na cérvix (T2). Para comparar as duas pipetas, foi considerado o grau de dificuldade para realização das inseminações, o tempo necessário para realizá-las, a presença de sangramento após a inseminação, a presença de refluxo no momento da inseminação, as taxas de retorno ao estro (TR), de prenhez (TPR) e de parto ajustada (TPA), além do número de leitões nascidos (NT). As fêmeas de ambos os grupos foram inseminadas com doses de 1 bilhão de espermatozóides, em intervalos de 24 horas. A passagem do cateter de IAU através da cérvix foi possível em 95,9% das fêmeas, sem diferença entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Em pelo menos uma das inseminações, foi observado sangue no cateter, após a realização da IAU, em 20,6% das fêmeas do T1 e 15,2% das fêmeas do T2 (P=0,14). O tempo médio necessário para realizar a inseminação foi de 2,1 minutos para o T1 e 2,3 minutos para o T2 (P=0,26). O percentual de fêmeas com refluxo de sêmen no momento da inseminação foi maior (P=0,01) no T1 (8,4%) em comparação ao T2 (2,9%). Não houve diferença (P>0,05) nas variáveis TR (8,0 e 4,8%), TPR (93,4 e 96,2%) e NT (12,4 e 12,7 leitões) entre T1 e T2, respectivamente. A TPA do T1 (90,6%) apresentou tendência (P=0,07) de ser inferior à do T2 (95,1%). No T1, as fêmeas primíparas apresentaram maior TR e menor TPA em comparação às pluríparas (P<0,05). Os resultados mostram que a nova pipeta pode ser utilizada sem prejuízos ao desempenho reprodutivo, em fêmeas pluríparas, mas sugerem cautela para sua utilização em fêmeas primíparas.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the reproductive performance of 423 sows of 1 to 9 farrowings inseminated with two different intrauterine artificial insemination (IAU) pipettes. The first group (T1) was formed by sows inseminated with a new pipette whose extremity was not fixed in the cervix. The second group (T2) was formed by sows inseminated with a Verona® pipette model, with its extremity fixed in the cervix. The degree of difficulty to perform the insemination, the time spent during the insemination, the presence of blood after insemination and of semen backflow during insemination were considered for the comparison of these pipettes. Return to oestrus rate (RO), pregnancy rate (PR), adjusted farrowing rate (AFR) and total litter size (TLS) were also evaluated. All females were inseminated with 1 billion spermatozoa per dose applied at intervals of 24 hours. The catheter of IAU was successfully inserted in 95.9% of females without difference between treatments (P>0.05). The presence of blood, in at least one insemination, was observed in 20.6% of T1 and 15.2% of T2 females (P=0.14). The average time to perform the insemination was 2.1 minutes for T1 and 2.3 minutes for T2 females (P=0.26). The percentage of females with semen backflow was significantly higher (P=0.01) in T1 (8.4%) compared to T2 (2.9%) group. There were no differences (P>0.05) in RO (8.0% and 4.8%), PR (93.4% and 96.2%) and TLS (12.4 and 12.7 piglets) between T1 and T2 groups, respectively. AFR of T1 (90.6%) tended (P=0.07) to be lower than that of T2 (95.1%). Primiparous females of T1 showed higher RO and lower AFR in comparison to pluriparous (P<0.05). The results indicate that the new pipette can be used in pluriparous females without compromising their reproductive performance. However, caution is necessary for the utilization of this new pipette in primiparous females.
